While the Euclidean two-dimensional gravitational path integral is in general highly fluctuating, it admits a semiclassical two-sphere saddle if coupled to a matter CFT with large and positive central charge. In Weyl gauge this gravity theory is known as timelike Liouville theory, and is conjectured to be a non-unitary two-dimensional CFT. We explore the semiclassical limit of timelike Liouville theory by calculating the two-sphere partition function from the perspective of the path integral to three-loop order, extending the work in 2106.01665. We also compare our result to the conjectured all-loop sphere partition function obtained from the DOZZ formula. Since the two-sphere is the geometry of Euclidean two-dimensional de Sitter space our discussion is tied to the conjecture of Gibbons-Hawking, according to which the dS entropy is encoded in the Euclidean gravitational path integral over compact manifolds.
We consider timelike Liouville theory with FZZT-like boundary conditions. The bulk one-point and boundary two-point structure constants on a disk are derived using bootstrap. We find that these structure constants are not the analytic continuations of their spacelike counterparts.
In a recent paper, D. Harlow, J. Maltz, and E. Witten showed that a particular proposal for the timelike Liouville three-point function, originally due to Al. Zamolodchikov and to I. Kostov and V. Petkova, can actually be computed by the original Liouville path integral evaluated on a new integration cycle. Here, we discuss a Coulomb gas computation of the timelike three-point function and show that an analytic extension of the Selberg type integral formulas involved reproduces the same expression, including the adequate normalization. A notable difference with the spacelike calculation is poi…
Liouville theory with a negative norm boson and no screening charge corresponds to an exact classical solution of closed bosonic string theory describing time-dependent bulk tachyon condensation. A simple expression for the two point function is proposed based on renormalization/analytic continuation of the known results for the ordinary (positive-norm) Liouville theory. The expression agrees exactly with the minisuperspace result for the closed string pair-production rate (which diverges at finite time). Puzzles concerning the three-point function are presented and discussed.
A proper definition of the path integral of quantum gravity has been a long-standing puzzle because the Weyl factor of the Euclidean metric has a wrong-sign kinetic term. We propose a definition of two-dimensional Liouville quantum gravity with cosmological constant using conformal bootstrap for the timelike Liouville theory coupled to supercritical matter. We prove a no-ghost theorem for the states in the BRST cohomology. We show that the four-point function constructed by gluing the timelike Liouville three-point functions is well defined and crossing symmetric (numerically) for external Lio…
We compute the Hermitian sector of the relative BRST cohomology of the spacelike and timelike Liouville theories with generic real central charge $c_L$ in each case, coupled to a spacelike Coulomb gas and a generic transverse CFT. This paper is a companion of arXiv:1905.12689, and its main goal is to completely characterize the cohomology of the timelike theory with $c_L \le 1$ which was defined there. We also apply our formulas to revisit the BRST cohomology of the spacelike Liouville theory with $c_L > 1$, which includes generalized minimal gravity. We prove a no-ghost theorem for the Hermit…
We show how by assuming at least 8 real timelike supersymmetries in the maximally supersymmetric three-dimensional ungauged supergravity and a further simplifying Ansatz, we are naturally led to a pair of Liouville field equations. We also show that there are no solutions that preserve only 6 real timelike supersymmetries. The solution relies on the classification of complex spinors of Spin(8) to which the problem quickly reduces.
Timelike Liouville theory admits the sphere $\mathbb{S}^{2}$ as a real saddle point, about which quantum fluctuations can occur. An issue occurs when computing the expectation values of specific types of quantities, like the distance between points. The problem being that the gauge redundancy of the path integral over metrics is not completely fixed even after fixing to conformal gauge by imposing $g_{μν} = e^{2\bϕ}\tilde{g}_{μν}$, where $ϕ$ is the Liouville field and $\tilde{g}_{μν}$ is a reference metric. The physical metric $g_{μν}$, and therefore the path integral over metrics still posses…
The timelike boundary Liouville (TBL) conformal field theory consisting of a negative norm boson with an exponential boundary interaction is considered. TBL and its close cousin, a positive norm boson with a non-hermitian boundary interaction, arise in the description of the $c=1$ accumulation point of $c<1$ minimal models, as the worldsheet description of open string tachyon condensation in string theory and in scaling limits of superconductors with line defects. Bulk correlators are shown to be exactly soluble. In contrast, due to OPE singularities near the boundary interaction, the computat…

We compute the sphere and disk partition functions in semiclassical Liouville and analogous quantities in double-scaled matrix integrals. The quantity sphere/disk^2 is unambiguous and we find a precise numerical match between the Liouville answer and the matrix integral answer. An application is to show that the sphere partition function in JT gravity is infinite.
Motivated by recent works on the connection between 2D quantum gravity and timelike Liouville theory, we revisit the latter and clarify some aspects of the computation of its partition function: We present a detailed computation of the Liouville partition function on the fluctuating sphere at finite values of the central charge. The results for both the spacelike theory and the timelike theory are given, and their properties analyzed. We discuss the derivation of the partition function from the DOZZ formula, its derivation using the Coulomb gas approach, a semiclassical computation of it using…
We argue that the closed string energy in the bulk bouncing tachyon background is to be quantised in a simple manner as if strings were trapped in a finite time interval. We discuss it from three different viewpoints; (1) the timelike continuation of the sinh-Gordon model, (2) the dual matrix model description of the (1+1)-dimensional string theory with the bulk bouncing tachyon condensate, (3) the c_L=1 limit of the timelike Liouville theory with the dual Liouville potential turned on. There appears to be a parallel between the bulk bouncing tachyon and the full S-brane of D-brane decay. We f…
We study irregular states of rank-two and three in Liouville theory, based on an ansatz proposed by D. Gaiotto and J. Teschner. Using these irregular states, we evaluate asymptotic expansions of irregular conformal blocks corresponding to the partition functions of $(A_1,A_3)$ and $(A_1,D_4)$ Argyres-Douglas theories for general $Ω$-background parameters. In the limit of vanishing Liouville charge, our result reproduces strong coupling expansions of the partition functions recently obtained via the Painlevé/gauge correspondence. This suggests that the irregular conformal block for one irregula…
Liouville field theory on hyperelliptic surface is considered. The partition function of the Liouville field theory on the hyperelliptic surface are expressed as a correlation function of the Liouville vertex operators on a sphere and the twist fields.
Correlation functions in Liouville theory are meromorphic functions of the Liouville momenta, as is shown explicitly by the DOZZ formula for the three-point function on the sphere. In a certain physical region, where a real classical solution exists, the semiclassical limit of the DOZZ formula is known to agree with what one would expect from the action of the classical solution. In this paper, we ask what happens outside of this physical region. Perhaps surprisingly we find that, while in some range of the Liouville momenta the semiclassical limit is associated to complex saddle points, in ge…
We study instanton contribution to the partition function of the one matrix model in the k-th multicritical region, which corresponds to the (2,2k-1) minimal model coupled to Liouville theory. The instantons in the one matrix model are given by local extrema of the effective potential for a matrix eigenvalue and identified with the ZZ branes in Liouville theory. We show that the 2-instanton contribution in the partition function is universal as well as the 1-instanton contribution and that the connected part of the 2-instanton contribution reproduces the annulus amplitudes between the ZZ brane…
We construct Euclidean Liouville conformal field theories in odd number of dimensions. The theories are nonlocal and non-unitary with a log-correlated Liouville field, a ${\cal Q}$-curvature background, and an exponential Liouville-type potential. We study the classical and quantum properties of these theories including the finite entanglement entropy part of the sphere partition function $F$, the boundary conformal anomaly and vertex operators' correlation functions. We derive the analogue of the even-dimensional DOZZ formula and its semi-classical approximation.
The dS/CFT correspondence postulates the existence of a Euclidean CFT dual to a suitable gravity theory with Dirichlet boundary conditions asymptotic to de Sitter spacetime. A semi-classical model of such a correspondence consists of Einstein gravity with positive cosmological constant and without matter which is dual to Euclidean Liouville theory defined at the future conformal boundary. Here we show that Euclidean Liouville theory is also dual to Einstein gravity with Dirichlet boundary conditions on a fixed timelike slice in the static patch. Intriguingly, the spacetime interpretation of Eu…
The Liouville field theory on Z_N-Riemann surfaces is studied and it is shown that it decomposes into a Liouville field theory on the sphere and N-1 free boson theories. Also, the partition function of the Liouville field theory on the Z_N-Riemann surfaces is expressed as a product of the correlation function for the Liouville vertex operators on the sphere and a number of twisted fields.
We conjecture an expression for the Liouville theory conformal blocks and correlation functions on a Riemann surface of genus g and n punctures as the Nekrasov partition function of a certain class of N=2 SCFTs recently defined by one of the authors. We conduct extensive tests of the conjecture at genus 0,1.
We determine the spectrum and correlation functions of Liouville theory with a central charge less than (or equal) one. This completes the definition of Liouville theory for all complex values of the central charge. The spectrum is always spacelike, and there is no consistent timelike Liouville theory. We also study the non-analytic conformal field theories that exist at rational values of the central charge. Our claims are supported by numerical checks of crossing symmetry. We provide Python code for computing Virasoro conformal blocks, and correlation functions in Liouville theory and (gener…
We study the dual descriptions recently discovered for the Seiberg-Witten theory in the presence of surface operators. The Nekrasov partition function for a four-dimensional N=2 gauge theory with a surface operator is believed equal to the wave-function of the corresponding integrable system, or the Hitchin system, and is identified with the conformal block with a degenerate field via the AGT relation. We verify the conjecture by showing that the null state condition leads to the Schrodinger equations of the integrable systems. Furthermore, we show that the deformed prepotential emerging from …
In this note, we explore the relation between crossing symmetry and modular invariance in conformal field theory and S-duality in gauge theory. It is shown that partition functions of different S dual theories of N=2 SU(2) gauge theory with four fundamentals can be derived from the crossing symmetry of the Liouville four point function. We also show that the partition function of N=4 SU(2) gauge theory can be derived from the Liouville partition function on torus.
The partition function of a two dimensional Abelian gauge model reproducing magnetic vortices is discussed in the harmonic approximation. Classical solutions exhibit conformal invariance, that is broken by statistical fluctuations, apart from an exceptional case. The corresponding ``anomaly'' has been evaluated. Zero modes of the thermal fluctuation operator have been carefully discussed.
We first classify all supersymmetric solutions of the 3-dimensional half-maximal ungauged supergravity that possess a timelike Killing vector coming from the Killing spinor bilinear by considering their identification under the complexification of the local symmetry of the theory. It is found that only solutions that preserve $16/2^n, 1 \leq n \leq 3$ real supersymmetries are allowed. We then classify supersymmetric solutions under the real local symmetry of the theory and we are able to solve the equations of motion for all of them. It is shown that all such solutions can be expressed as a di…
In this paper we study the correspondence between the $\hat{\textrm{su}}(n)_{k}\oplus \hat{\textrm{su}}(n)_{p}/\hat{\textrm{su}}(n)_{k+p}$ coset conformal field theories and $\mathcal{N}=2$ SU(n) gauge theories on $\mathbb{R}^{4}/\mathbb{Z}_{p}$. Namely we check the correspondence between the SU(2) Nekrasov partition function on $\mathbb{R}^{4}/\mathbb{Z}_{4}$ and the conformal blocks of the $S_{3}$ parafermion algebra (in $S$ and $D$ modules). We find that they are equal up to the U(1)-factor as it was in all cases of AGT-like relations. Studying the structure of the instanton partition funct…
We study the nonabelian vortex counting problem on $\mathbb{C}/\mathbb{Z}_p$. At first we calculate vortex partition functions on the orbifold space using localization techniques, then we find how to extract orbifold vortex partitions function from orbifold linear quiver instanton partition functions. Finally, we study the AGT like relation between orbifold SU(2) vortices and $\mathcal{N} = 1$ super Liouville theory in the mixed R/NS sector by fixing the dictionary among parameters in the common hypergeometric functions system.
We propose an SL(2,R) Chern-Simons description of Liouville field theory (LFT), whose correlation function duals to partition function of N=2 SU(2) gauge theories. We give the dual expressions for conformal blocks, fusion rules, and Wilson loop operators in Chern-Simons theory. By realizing Wilson loop operator in Liouville as a Hopf link in S^3 on which lives an SL(2,R) Chern-Simons theory, we obtain an alternative description of monodromy of this loop operator in Liouville field theory as the ratio of link invariants. We show how to calculate t'Hooft loops in the simplest example -- the N=4 …
The conjecture about the correspondence between instanton partition functions in the N=2 SUSY Yang-Mills theory and conformal blocks of two-dimensional conformal field theories is extended to the case of the N=1 supersymmetric conformal blocks. We find that the necessary modification of the moduli space of instantons requires additional restriction of Z(2)-symmetry. This leads to an explicit form of the N=1 superconformal blocks in terms of Young diagrams with two sorts of cells.
We present a relation between N=2 quiver gauge theories on the ALE space O_{P^1}(-2) and correlators of N=1 super Liouville conformal field theory, providing checks in the case of punctured spheres and tori. We derive a blow-up formula for the full Nekrasov partition function and show that, up to a U(1) factor, the N=2^* instanton partition function is given by the product of the character of \hat{SU}(2)_2 times the super Virasoro conformal block on the torus with one puncture. Moreover, we match the perturbative gauge theory contribution with super Liouville three-point functions.
In this paper we study a connection between Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity on two-dimensional anti de-Sitter spaces and a semiclassical limit of $c<1$ two-dimensional string theory. The world-sheet theory of the latter consists of a space-like Liouville CFT coupled to a non-rational CFT defined by a time-like Liouville CFT. We show that their actions, disk partition functions and annulus amplitudes perfectly agree with each other, where the presence of boundary terms plays a crucial role. We also reproduce the boundary Schwarzian theory from the Liouville theory description. Then, we identify …
Analytic expressions for the two dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ SLFT blocks in the light semi-classical limit are found for both Neveu-Schwarz and Ramond sectors. The calculations are done by using the duality between $SU(2)$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ super-symmetric gauge theories living on $R^4/Z_2$ space and two dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ super Liouville field theory. It is shown that in the light asymptotic limit only a restricted set of Young diagrams contribute to the partition function. This enables us to sum up the instanton series explicitly and find closed expressions for the corresponding $\mat…
We consider Alday-Gaiotto-Tachikawa (AGT) realization of the Nekrasov partition function of N=2 SCFT. We focus our attention on the SU(2) theory with N_f=4 flavor symmetry, whose partition function, according to AGT, is given by the Liouville four-point function on the sphere. The gauge theory with N_f=4 is known to exhibit SO(8) symmetry. We explain how the Weyl symmetry transformations of SO(8) flavor symmetry are realized in the Liouville theory picture. This is associated to functional properties of the Liouville four-point function that are a priori unexpected. In turn, this can be though…
We express all correlation functions in timelike boundary Liouville theory as unitary matrix integrals and develop efficient techniques to evaluate these integrals. We compute large classes of correlation functions explicitly, including an infinite number of terms in the boundary state of the rolling tachyon. The matrix integrals arising here also determine the correlation functions of gauge invariant operators in two dimensional Yang-Mills theory, suggesting an equivalence between the rolling tachyon and QCD_2.
Entanglement entropy (EE) is a quantitative measure of the effective degrees of freedom and the correlation between the sub-systems of a physical system. Using the replica trick, we can obtain the EE by evaluating the entanglement Renyi entropy (ERE). The ERE is a $q$-analogue of the EE and expressed by the $q$ replicated partition function. In the semi-classical approximation, it is apparently easy to calculate the EE because the classical action represents the partition function by the saddle point approximation and we do not need to perform the path integral for the evaluation of the partit…
The role played by the Euler anomaly in the dictionary relating sphere partition functions of four dimensional theories of class $\mathcal{S}$ and two dimensional nonrational CFTs is clarified. On the two dimensional side, this involves a careful treatment of scale factors in Liouville/Toda correlators. Using ideas from tinkertoy constructions for Gaiotto duality, a framework is proposed for evaluating these scale factors. The representation theory of Weyl groups plays a critical role in this framework.
We study N=1 super Liouville theory on worldsheets with and without boundary. Some basic correlation functions on a sphere or a disc are obtained using the properties of degenerate representations of superconformal algebra. Boundary states are classified by using the modular transformation property of annulus partition functions, but there are some of those whose wave functions cannot be obtained from the analysis of modular property. There are two ways of putting boundary condition on supercurrent, and it turns out that the two choices lead to different boundary states in quality. Some proper…
Classical relativistic system of point particles coupled with an electromagnetic field is considered in the three-dimensional representation. The gauge freedom connected with the chronometrical invariance of the four-dimensional description is reduced by use of the geometrical concept of the forms of relativistic dynamics. The remainder gauge degrees of freedom of the electromagnetic potential are analysed within the framework of Dirac's constrained Hamiltonian mechanics in the front form of dynamics. The results are implemented to the problems of relativistic statistical mechanics. Based on t…
We derive an RG flow equation that is satisfied by the regularized partition function for noncritical strings in background fields. The flow refers to change in the position of a ``boundary'' in the liouville direction. The boundary is required to regularize the ultraviolet divergences in the partition function coming from integration over world-sheets of arbitrarily small area. From the point of view of the target space effective gravitational action that the partition function evaluates on-shell, the boundary regularizes {\it infrared} divergences coming from the infinite volume of the liouv…
We propose an equivalence of the partition functions of two different 3d gauge theories. On one side of the correspondence we consider the partition function of 3d SL(2,R) Chern-Simons theory on a 3-manifold, obtained as a punctured Riemann surface times an interval. On the other side we have a partition function of a 3d N=2 superconformal field theory on S^3, which is realized as a duality domain wall in a 4d gauge theory on S^4. We sketch the proof of this conjecture using connections with quantum Liouville theory and quantum Teichmuller theory, and study in detail the example of the once-pu…
Lorentzian continuation of the Sine-Liouville model describes non-homogeneous rolling closed string tachyon. Via T-duality, this relates to the gauged $H_+^3$ Wess-Zumino-Witten model at subcritical level. This model is exactly solvable. We give a closed formula for the 3-point correlation functions for the model at level k within the range 0<k<2, which relates to the analogous quantity for k>2 in a similar way as how the Harlow-Maltz-Witten 3-point function of timelike Liouville field theory relates to the analytic continuation of the Dorn-Otto-Zamolodchikov-Zamolodchikov structure constants:…
We discuss some aspects of Liouville field theory, starting from operator equation of motion in presence of two screening charges and re-derive the dual zero mode Schwinger Dyson equations for the two screening charges from the path integral. Using functional methods we show the familiar pole structure of Liouville correlation function using the partition function. Next we discuss a generalized structure of the correlation functions obtained from the zero mode functional equations. From this structure we infer the use of the Barnes double Gamma functions to construct a part of the denominator …
Motivated by problems arising in the study of N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories we introduce and study irregular singularities in two-dimensional conformal field theory, here Liouville theory. Irregular singularities are associated to representations of the Virasoro algebra in which a subset of the annihilation part of the algebra act diagonally. In this paper we define natural bases for the space of conformal blocks in the presence of irregular singularities, describe how to calculate their series expansions, and how such conformal blocks can be constructed by some delicate limiting procedure…
In this work we explore the complexity path integral optimization process for the case of warped $\text{AdS}_3$/warped $\text{CFT}_2$ correspondence. We first present the specific renormalization flow equations and analyze the differences with the case of CFT. We discuss how the "chiral Liouville action" could replace the Liouville action as the suitable cost function for this case. Starting from the other side of the story, we also show how the deformed Liouville actions could be derived from the spacelike, timelike and null warped metrics and how the behaviors of boundary topological terms c…
We propose a correspondence between loop operators in a family of four dimensional N=2 gauge theories on S^4 -- including Wilson, 't Hooft and dyonic operators -- and Liouville theory loop operators on a Riemann surface. This extends the beautiful relation between the partition function of these N=2 gauge theories and Liouville correlators found by Alday, Gaiotto and Tachikawa. We show that the computation of these Liouville correlators with the insertion of a Liouville loop operator reproduces Pestun's formula capturing the expectation value of a Wilson loop operator in the corresponding gaug…
General properties of perturbed conformal field theory interacting with quantized Liouville gravity are considered in the simplest case of spherical topology. We discuss both short distance and large distance asymptotic of the partition function. The crossover region is studied numerically for a simple example of the perturbed Yang-Lee model, complemented in general with arbitrary conformal ``spectator'' matter. The latter is not perturbed and remains conformal along the flow, thus giving a control over the Liouville central charge. The partition function is evaluated numerically from combined…
Following hep-th/0305177, we write the boundary state of half S-brane in bosonic string theory as a grand canonical partition function of a unitary matrix model. From this representation, it follows that the annulus amplitude can be written as a grand canonical partition function of a unitary two-matrix model. We also show that the contribution of the exponentially growing couplings to the timelike oscillators can be resummed in a certain annulus amplitude.
