The dS/CFT correspondence postulates the existence of a Euclidean CFT dual to a suitable gravity theory with Dirichlet boundary conditions asymptotic to de Sitter spacetime. A semi-classical model of such a correspondence consists of Einstein gravity with positive cosmological constant and without matter which is dual to Euclidean Liouville theory defined at the future conformal boundary. Here we show that Euclidean Liouville theory is also dual to Einstein gravity with Dirichlet boundary conditions on a fixed timelike slice in the static patch. Intriguingly, the spacetime interpretation of Euclidean Liouville time is the physical time of the static observer. As a prerequisite of this correspondence, we show that the asymptotic symmetry algebra which consists of two copies of the Virasoro algebra extends everywhere into the bulk.
There has been a proposal that infrared quantum effects of massless interacting field theories in de-Sitter space may provide time-dependent screening of the cosmological constant. As a concrete model of the proposal, we study the three loop corrections to the energy-momentum tensor of massless $λϕ^4$ theory in the background of classical Liouville gravity in $D=2$ dimensional de-Sitter space. We find that the cosmological constant is screened in sharp contrast to the massless $λϕ^4$ theory in $D=4$ dimensions due to the sign difference between the cosmological constant of the Liouville gravit…
We demonstrate that the near-horizon physics, the Hawking radiation and the reflection off the radial potential barrier, can be understood entirely within a conformal field theory picture in terms of one- and two-point functions in the boundary Liouville theory. An important element in this demonstration is the notion of {\it horizon state}, the Hawking radiation being interpreted as a result of the transition of horizon state to the ordinary states propagating outside black hole horizon.
Motivated by the works on Equivalence Principle in the context of linear Generalized Uncertainty Principle and, independently, in the context of quadratic Generalized Uncertainty Principle, we expand these endeavors in the context of Generalized Uncertainty Principle when both linear and quadratic terms in momentum are include. We demonstrate how the definitions of equations of motion change upon that expansion. We also show how to obtain an analogue of Liouville theorem in the presence of linear and quadratic Generalized Uncertainty Principle. We employ the corresponding modified invariant un…
Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity with non-vanishing cosmological constant coupled to Liouville theory is considered as a non-critical string on $d$ dimensional flat spacetime. It is discussed how the presence of cosmological constant yields additional constraints on the parameter space of the theory, even when the conformal anomaly is independent of the cosmological constant. Such constraints agree with the necessary conditions for the tachyon field to be a primary --prelogarithmic-- operator of the worldsheet conformal field theory. Thus, the linearized tachyon field equation allows to impose the di…
We show that any nonextremal black hole can be described by a Liouville theory that lives on its very near horizon region. In classical Liouville theory, the black hole corresponds to a field configuration that reproduces the Rindler metric. In quantum Liouville theory, the black hole state in the CFT is created by the puncture operator that gives rise to a conical singularity with a deficit angle of $2 π$. This state is "heavy" with a nonnormalizable wave function in the minisuperspace approximation. Black hole entropy counts the number of ways the "heavy" black hole state can be obtained by …
The interplay between the diffeomorphism and conformal symmetries (a feature common in quantum field theories) is shown to be exhibited for the case of black holes in two dimensional classical Liouville theory. We show that although the theory is conformally invariant in the near horizon limit, there is a breaking of the diffeomorphism symmetry at the classical level. On the other hand, in the region away from the horizon, the conformal symmetry of the theory gets broken with the diffeomorphism symmetry remaining intact.
We discuss the case of massive gravitons and their relation with the cosmological constant, considered as an eigenvalue of a Sturm-Liouville problem. A variational approach with Gaussian trial wave functionals is used as a method to study such a problem. We approximate the equation to one loop in a Schwarzschild background and a zeta function regularization is involved to handle with divergences. The regularization is closely related to the subtraction procedure appearing in the computation of Casimir energy in a curved background. A renormalization procedure is introduced to remove the infini…
We consider solutions of the cosmological equations pertaining to a dissipative, dilaton-driven off-equilibrium Liouville Cosmological model, which may describe the effective field theoretic limit of a non-critical string model of the Universe. The non-criticality may be the result of an early-era catastrophic cosmic event, such as a big-bang, brane-world collision etc. The evolution of the various cosmological parameters of the model are obtained, and the effects of the dilaton and off-shell Liouville terms, including briefly those on relic densities, which distinguish the model from conventi…
In this article we investigate the properties of the FLRW flat cosmological models in which the cosmic expansion of the Universe is affected by a dilaton dark energy (Liouville scenario). In particular, we perform a detailed study of these models in the light of the latest cosmological data, which serves to illustrate the phenomenological viability of the new dark energy paradigm as a serious alternative to the traditional scalar field approaches. By performing a joint likelihood analysis of the recent supernovae type Ia data (SNIa), the differential ages of passively evolving galaxies, and th…
We show that the spectrum of conical defects in three-dimensional de Sitter space is in one-to-one correspondence with the spectrum of vertex operators in Liouville conformal field theory. The classical conformal dimensions of vertex operators are equal to the masses of the classical point particles in dS_3 that cause the conical defect. The quantum dimensions instead are shown to coincide with the mass of the Kerr-dS_3 solution computed with the Brown-York stress tensor. Therefore classical de Sitter gravity encodes the quantum properties of Liouville theory. The equality of the gravitational…
A proper definition of the path integral of quantum gravity has been a long-standing puzzle because the Weyl factor of the Euclidean metric has a wrong-sign kinetic term. We propose a definition of two-dimensional Liouville quantum gravity with cosmological constant using conformal bootstrap for the timelike Liouville theory coupled to supercritical matter. We prove a no-ghost theorem for the states in the BRST cohomology. We show that the four-point function constructed by gluing the timelike Liouville three-point functions is well defined and crossing symmetric (numerically) for external Lio…
We investigate a solution of the exactly renormalized Liouville action to foresee the fate of the two-dimensional de Sitter space. We work in the semiclassical region with a large matter central charge $c$. Instead of de Sitter expansion, it performs a slow-roll inflation with the parameters $ε=(1/2)η=6/c$. An inflaton field is induced in the effective theory to describe quantum effects of the Liouville theory. The geometric entropy increases logarithmically with the Hubble radius. We propose that de Sitter entropy is carried by superhorizon modes of the metric. It can be directly estimated fr…
The angular ADM reduction of the BTZ spacetime yields a Liouville-type theory. The analysis of the resulting Liouville theory naturally leads to identification of the stretched horizon. The dynamics associated with the stretched horizon has a feature that seems consistent with the unsmooth horizon; the quantum gravity effects are essential for the unsmoothness. We show that the "anomaly" term in the stress-energy tensor is responsible for the Planck scale energy experienced by an infalling observer.
This paper elaborates on the bulk/boundary relation between negative cosmological constant 3D gravity and Liouville field theory (LFT). We develop an interpretation of LFT non-normalizable states in terms of particles moving in the bulk. This interpretation is suggested by the fact that ``heavy'' vertex operators of LFT create conical singularities and thus should correspond to point particles moving inside AdS. We confirm this expectation by comparing the (semi-classical approximation to the) LFT two-point function with the (appropriately regularized) gravity action evaluated on the correspon…
In this paper we describe a Liouville gravity which is induced by a set of quantum fields (constituents) and represents a two-dimensional analog of Sakharov's induced gravity. The important feature of the considered theory is the presence of massless constituents which are responsible for the appearance of the induced Liouville field. The role of the massive constituents is only to induce the cosmological constant. We consider the instanton solutions of the Euclidean Liouville gravity with negative and zero cosmological constants, some instantons being interpreted as two-dimensional anti-de Si…
Liouville conformal field theory is considered with conformal boundary. There is a family of conformal boundary conditions parameterized by the boundary cosmological constant, so that observables depend on the dimensional ratios of boundary and bulk cosmological constants. The disk geometry is considered. We present an explicit expression for the expectation value of a bulk operator inside the disk and for the two-point function of boundary operators. We comment also on the properties of the degenrate boundary operators. Possible applications and further developments are discussed. In particul…
Black hole event horizons and cosmological event horizons share many properties, making it natural to ask whether our recent advances in understanding black holes generalize to cosmology. To this end, we discuss a paradox that occurs if observers can access what lies beyond their cosmological horizon in the same way that they can access what lies beyond a black hole horizon. In particular, distinct observers with distinct horizons may encode the same portion of spacetime, violating the no-cloning theorem of quantum mechanics. This paradox is due precisely to the observer-dependence of the cosm…
We study the evolution of cosmological event horizons in anisotropic Kasner universes in the presence of a positive cosmological constant by analyzing null geodesics. At later times, the asymptotic form of cosmological horizons is the same spherical surface as the de Sitter horizon. At the early times, however, it has non-spherical shape with its eccentricity decreases with time. The horizon area increases with time respecting the second law of thermodynamics. The initial shape of the cosmological horizon takes the form of a needle or pancake surface depending on the nature of the background s…
A detailed reexamination is made of the exact operator formalism of two-dimensional Liouville quantum gravity in Minkowski spacetime with the cosmological term fully taken into account. Making use of the canonical mapping from the interacting Liouville field into a free field, we focus on the problem of how the Liouville exponential operator should be properly defined. In particular, the condition of mutual locality among the exponential operators is carefully analyzed, and a new solution, which is neither smoothly connected nor relatively local to the existing solution, is found. Our analysis…
It is known that certain types of particle motion near black hole horizons are chaotic while it has been proposed the existence of a universal bound for their Lyapunov exponent. We discuss the relation between chaos and inaffinity in presence of black hole and cosmological horizons. We argue that although a relation between the Lyapunov exponent and the generalized surface gravity appears naturally, in general there is no reason for the Lyapunov exponent of classical trajectories to be bounded in generic spacetimes with horizon. Moreover, we show that the de Sitter spacetime and cosmological h…
We argue that classical $(α')$ effects qualitatively modify the structure of Euclidean black hole horizons in string theory. While low energy modes experience the geometry familiar from general relativity, high energy ones see a rather different geometry, in which the Euclidean horizon can be penetrated by an amount that grows with the radial momentum of the probe. We discuss this in the exactly solvable SL(2,R)/U(1) black hole, where it is a manifestation of the black hole/Sine-Liouville duality.
In this paper we aim to provide new examples of the application and the generality of the membrane paradigm. The membrane paradigm is a formalism for studying the event horizon of black holes. After analyzing it with some technical details and realizing it in the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole, we apply the paradigm to cosmological horizons, firstly to the pure de Sitter horizon, and then to the trapping horizon of the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker universe. In the latter case, the cosmological stretched horizon is oblique, thus the running of renormalization parameter is nonzero in the t…
We establish solutions corresponding to AdS4 static charged black holes with inhomogeneous two-dimensional horizon surfaces of constant curvature. Depending on the choice of the 2D constant curvature space, the metric potential of the internal geometry of the horizon satisfies the elliptic wave/elliptic Liouville equations. We calculate the charge diffusion and transport coefficients in the hydrodynamic limit of gauge/gravity duality and observe the exponential suppression in the diffusion coefficient and in the shear viscosity-per-entropy density ratio in the presence of an inhomogeneity on b…
We consider massless fields of arbitrary spin in de Sitter space. We introduce a spinor-helicity formalism, which encodes the field data on a cosmological horizon. These variables reduce the free S-matrix in an observer's causal patch, i.e. the evolution of free fields from one horizon to another, to a simple Fourier transform. We show how this result arises via twistor theory, by decomposing the horizon<->horizon problem into a pair of (more symmetric) horizon<->twistor problems.
A quantization of (2+1)-dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant is presented and quantum aspects of the (2+1)-dimensional black holes are studied thereby. The quantization consists of two procedures. One is related with quantization of the asymptotic Virasoro symmetry. A notion of the Virasoro deformation of 3-geometry is introduced. For a given black hole, the deformation of the exterior of the outer horizon is identified with a product of appropriate coadjoint orbits of the Virasoro groups $\hat{diff S^1}_{\pm}$. Its quantization provides unitary irreducible representations o…
We derive one-point functions of the N=2 super-Liouville theory on a half line using the modular transformations of the characters in terms of the bulk and boundary cosmological constants. We also show that these results are consistent with conformal bootstrap equations which are based on the bulk and boundary actions. We provide various independent checks for our results.
We have investigated the emerging conformal field theory behavior on the interior interface of the region near the cosmological event horizon on an example of massless Dirac fermions. Indeed, we have constructed and verified the emerging de Sitter/CFT correspondence for the near cosmological event horizon region. It is in this near horizon region where the infinitely thin shell of matter with the stiffest equation of state (Zeldovich's matter) is placed in the model for a thermodynamically stable `would be black hole' which is sometimes called a gravastar or a dark energy star. We put forward …
Based on the entropy relations, we derive thermodynamic bound for entropy and area of horizons of Schwarzschild-dS black hole, including the event horizon, Cauchy horizon and negative horizon (i.e. the horizon with negative value), which are all geometrical bound and made up of the cosmological radius. Consider the first derivative of entropy relations together, we get the first law of thermodynamics for all horizons. We also obtain the Smarr relation of horizons by using the scaling discussion. For thermodynamics of all horizons, the cosmological constant is treated as a thermodynamical varia…
We find exact formulas for the Extended Uncertainty Principle (EUP) for the Rindler and Friedmann horizons and show that they can be expanded to obtain asymptotic forms known from the previous literature. We calculate the corrections to Hawking temperature and Bekenstein entropy of a black hole in the universe due to Rindler and Friedmann horizons. The effect of the EUP is similar to the canonical corrections of thermal fluctuations and so it rises the entropy signalling further loss of information.
This paper considers the nature of apparent horizons for astrophysical black hole situated in a realistic cosmological context. Using semi-tetrad covariant methods we study the local evolutions of the boundaries of the trapped region in the spacetime. For a collapsing massive star immersed in a cosmology with Cosmic Background Radiation (CBR), we show that the initial 2 dimensional marginally trapped surface bifurcates into inner and outer horizons. The inner horizon is timelike while the continuous CBR influx into the black hole makes the outer horizon spacelike. We discuss the possible conse…

We propose a holographic map between Einstein gravity coupled to matter in a de Sitter background and large N quantum mechanics of a system of spins. Holography maps a spin model with a finite dimensional Hilbert space defined on a version of the stretched horizon into bulk gravitational dynamics. The full Hamiltonian of the spin model contains a non-local piece which generates chaotic dynamics, widely conjectured to be a necessary part of quantum gravity, and a local piece which recovers the perturbative spectrum in the bulk.
The entropy of a de Sitter horizon was derived long ago by Gibbons and Hawking via a gravitational partition function. Since there is no boundary at which to define the temperature or energy of the ensemble, the statistical foundation of their approach has remained obscure. To place the statistical ensemble on a firm footing we introduce an artificial "York boundary", with either canonical or microcanonical boundary conditions, as has been done previously for black hole ensembles. The partition function and the density of states are expressed as integrals over paths in the constrained, spheric…
We show that the asymptotic dynamics of three-dimensional gravity with positive cosmological constant is described by Euclidean Liouville theory. This provides an explicit example of a correspondence between de Sitter gravity and conformal field theories. In the case at hand, this correspondence is established by formulating Einstein gravity with positive cosmological constant in three dimensions as an SL(2,C) Chern-Simons theory. The de Sitter boundary conditions on the connection are divided into two parts. The first part reduces the CS action to a nonchiral SL(2,C) WZNW model, whereas the s…
An extension of Penrose's singularity theorem is proved for spacetimes where black holes are allowed to form from non-singular initial data. With standard assumptions about the spacetime, and assuming the existence of a trapped surface which lies outside of black hole horizons and is not completely surrounded by horizons, we show that the spacetime region outside (or on) the horizons must contain singularities. If the trapped surface is surrounded by horizons, we show that the horizons divide spacetime into causally disconnected pieces. Unlike the original Penrose's theorem, our theorems provi…
The Hadamard renormalization prescription is used to derive a two dimensional analog of the renormalized stress tensor for a minimally coupled scalar field in Schwarzschild-de Sitter space time. In the two dimensional analog the minimal coupling reduces to the conformal coupling and the stress tensor is found to be determined by the (nonlocal) contribution of the anomalous trace and some additional parameters in close relation to the work [1]. To properly relate the stress tensor to the state of outwards signals coming from the direction of the black hole at late times we propose a cut-off hyp…
We give a calculation scheme for the cosmological constant computation with the help of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. This last one is regarded as a Sturm-Liouville problem with the cosmological constant considered as the associated eigenvalue. By fixing the ideas on a Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker line element in ordinary gravity, we apply this calculation scheme on distorted gravity. By distorted gravity, we mean all the deviations from General Relativity. We restrict our proposal on Gravity's Rainbow and Noncommutative geometry. A brief comment on Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) theory is discu…
We discuss the field quantisation of a free massive Dirac fermion in the two causally disconnected static patches of the de Sitter spacetime, by using mode functions that are normalisable on the cosmological event horizon. Using this, we compute the entanglement entropy of the vacuum state corresponding to these two regions, for a given fermionic mode. Further extensions of this result to more general static spherically symmetric and stationary axisymmetric spacetimes are discussed. For the stationary axisymmetric Kerr-de Sitter spacetime in particular, the variations of the entanglement entro…
We consider a gravitational perturbation of the Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity with an arbitrary dilaton potential and study the condition under which the quadratic action can be seen as a $T\bar{T}$-deformation of the matter action. As a special case, the flat-space JT gravity discussed by Dubovsky et al[arXiv:1706.06604 ] is included. Another interesting example is a hyperbolic dilaton potential. This case is equivalent to a classical Liouville gravity with a negative cosmological constant and then a finite $T\bar{T}$-deformation of the matter action is realized as a gravitational perturbati…
Boundary conditions and the corresponding states of a quantum field theory depend on how the horizons are taken into account. There is ambiguity as to which method is appropriate because different ways of incorporating the horizons lead to different results. We propose that a natural way of including the horizons is to first consider the Kruskal extension and then define the quantum field theory on the Euclidean section. Boundary conditions emerge naturally as consistency conditions of the Kruskal extension. We carry out the proposal for the explicit case of the Schwarzschild-de Sitter manifol…
The quantum fluctuations of horizons in Robertson-Walker universes and in the Schwarzschild spacetime are discussed. The source of the metric fluctuations is taken to be quantum linear perturbations of the gravitational field. Lightcone fluctuations arise when the retarded Green's function for a massless field is averaged over these metric fluctuations. This averaging replaces the delta-function on the classical lightcone with a Gaussian function, the width of which is a measure of the scale of the lightcone fluctuations. Horizon fluctuations are taken to be measured in the frame of a geodesic…
In this thesis, we aim to understand the microscopic details and origin of the Cosmological Horizon, produced by a static observer in four-dimensional de Sitter (dS$_4$) spacetime. We consider a deformed extension of dS spacetime by means of a single $\mathbb Z_q$ quotient, which resembles an Orbifold geometry. The Orbifold parameter induces a pair of codimension two minimal surfaces given by 2-spheres in the Euclidean geometry. Using dimensional reduction on the two-dimensional plane where the minimal surfaces have support, we use the Liouville field theory and the Kerr/CFT mechanism in order…
Large classes of AdS$_p$ supergravity backgrounds describing the IR dynamics of $p$-branes wrapped on a Riemann surface are determined by a solution to the Liouville equation. The regular solutions of this equation lead to the well-known wrapped brane supergravity solutions associated with the constant curvature metric on a compact Riemann surface. We show that some singular solutions of the Liouville equation have a physical interpretation as explicit point-like brane sources on the Riemann surface. We uncover the details of this picture by focusing on $\mathcal{N}=1$ theories of class $\math…
It has recently been shown that black holes can act as particle accelerators and two particles can collide with arbitrarily high center-of-mass (CM) energy under certain critical conditions. In this paper, we investigate particle collisions outside a Reissner-Nordström de Sitter (RN-dS) black hole. We find that infinite CM energy can be produced near the cosmological horizon for generic spacetime configurations. Remarkably, such infinite CM energy does not require the black hole to be extremal, in contrast to spacetimes in the absence of cosmological constants. However, since the charge of an …
We define a three-dimensional quantum theory of gravity as the holographic dual of the Liouville conformal field theory. The theory is consistent and unitary by definition. The corresponding theory of gravity with negative cosmological constant has peculiar properties. The quantum theory has no normalisable AdS3 vacuum. The model contains primary black holes with zero spin. All states can be interpreted as black holes dressed with boundary gravitons. There is a unique universal interaction between these states consistent with unitarity and the conformal symmetry of the model. This theory of gr…
It has recently been shown that, in the vicinity of their event horizons, black holes exhibit an infinite-dimensional symmetry. This symmetry captures relevant physical information about the black hole, and in particular about its thermodynamics. Here, we show that the same holds in a cosmological setup. More precisely, we show that around the de Sitter cosmological horizon, an infinite set of diffeomorphisms preserving a sensible set of boundary conditions emerges. These boundary conditions are similar to those considered by Price and Thorne in the context of the membrane paradigm, and permit…
We construct the boundary ground ring in c < 1 open string theories with non-zero boundary cosmological constant (FZZT brane), using the Coulomb gas representation. The ring relations yield an over-determined set of functional recurrence equations for the boundary correlation functions, which involve shifts of the target space momenta of the boundary fields as well as the boundary parameters on the different segments of the boundary.
We study global defects coupled to higher-dimensional gravity with a negative cosmological constant. This paper is mainly devoted to studying global black brane solutions which are extended global defects surrounded by horizons. We find series solutions in a few separated regions and confirm numerically that they can be mutually connected. When the world volume of the brane is Ricci-flat, the brane is surrounded by a degenerated horizon, while it is surrounded by two horizons when the world volume has a positive constant curvature. Each solution corresponds to an extremal and a non-extremal st…
We here propose a covariant entropy conjecture on cosmological dynamical horizon. After the formulation of our conjecture, we test its validity in adiabatically expanding universes with open, flat and closed spatial geometry, where our conjecture can also be viewed as a cosmological version of the generalized second law of thermodynamics in some sense.
We consider a cosmological horizon, named thermo-horizon, to which are associated a temperature and an entropy of Bekenstein-Hawking and which obeys the first law for an energy flow calculated through the corresponding limit surface. We point out a contradiction between the first law and the definition of the total energy contained inside the horizon. This contradiction is removed when the first law is replaced by a Gibbs' equation for a vacuum-like component associated to the event horizon.
Einstein's theory of general relativity, which contains a universal value of the Planck mass, has been so far successfully invoked to explain gravitational dynamics from sub-millimeter scales to the scale of the cosmological horizon. However, one may envisage that in alternative theories of gravity, the effective value of the Planck mass (or Newton's constant), which quantifies the coupling of matter to metric perturbations, can run on the cosmological horizon scale. In this letter, we study the consequences of a glitch in the Planck mass from sub-horizon to super-horizon scales. We first give…
We exhibit bound states in the spectrum of non-compact D-branes in N=2 Liouville conformal field theory. We interpret these states in the study of D-branes in the near-horizon limit of Neveu-Schwarz five-branes spread on a topologically trivial circle. We match semi-classical di-electric and repulsion effects with exact conformal field theory results and describe the fate of D-branes hitting NS5-branes. We also show that the bound states can give rise to massless vector and hyper multiplets in a low-energy gauge theory on D-branes deep inside the throat.
It is well known that there is a Hawking radiation from the cosmological horizon of the de-sitter spacetime, and the de-sitter spacetime can be a special case of a FRW universe. Therefore, there may be a corresponding Hawking radiation in a FRW universe. Indeed, there have been several clues showing that there is a Hawking radiation from the apparent horizon of a FRW universe. In our paper, however, we find that the Hawking radiation may come from the cosmological horizon. Moreover, we also find that the Hawking radiation from the apparent horizon of a FRW universe in some previous works can b…
