In this paper we present an extended variant of low rank parity check matrix (LRPC) codes that have received significant interests in recent years. It is shown that the extension indeed yields a superfamily of LRPC codes, which are termed low row rank parity check codes. The decoding method of the proposed codes is also investigated.

This paper is concerned with construction and structural analysis of both cyclic and quasi-cyclic codes, particularly LDPC codes. It consists of three parts. The first part shows that a cyclic code given by a parity-check matrix in circulant form can be decomposed into descendant cyclic and quasi-cyclic codes of various lengths and rates. Some fundamental structural properties of these descendant codes are developed, including the characterizations of the roots of the generator polynomial of a cyclic descendant code. The second part of the paper shows that cyclic and quasi-cyclic descendant LD…
The concept of parity check matrices of linear binary codes has been extended by Heden [9] to parity check systems of nonlinear binary codes. In the present paper we extend this concept to parity check systems of nonlinear codes over finite commutative Frobenius rings. Using parity check systems, results on how to get some fundamental properties of the codes are given. Moreover, parity check systems and its connection to characters is investigated and a MacWilliams type theorem on the distance distribution is given.
In this paper, an idea of the cutting plane method is employed to improve the fractional distance of a given binary parity check matrix. The fractional distance is the minimum weight (with respect to l1-distance) of vertices of the fundamental polytope. The cutting polytope is defined based on redundant rows of the parity check matrix and it plays a key role to eliminate unnecessary fractional vertices in the fundamental polytope. We propose a greedy algorithm and its efficient implementation for improving the fractional distance based on the cutting plane method.
We face the following dilemma for designing low-density parity-check codes (LDPC) for quantum error correction. 1) The row weights of parity-check should be large: The minimum distances are bounded above by the minimum row weights of parity-check matrices of constituent classical codes. Small minimum distance tends to result in poor decoding performance at the error-floor region. 2) The row weights of parity-check matrices should not be large: The sum-product decoding performance at the water-fall region is degraded as the row weight increases. Recently, Kudekar et al. showed spatially-coupled…
Based on the ideas of cyclotomic cosets, idempotents and Mattson-Solomon polynomials, we present a new method to construct GF(2^m), where m>0 cyclic low-density parity-check codes. The construction method produces the dual code idempotent which is used to define the parity-check matrix of the low-density parity-check code. An interesting feature of this construction method is the ability to increment the code dimension by adding more idempotents and so steadily decrease the sparseness of the parity-check matrix. We show that the constructed codes can achieve performance very close to the spher…
Let H(D) be the parity-check matrix of an LDPC convolutional code corresponding to the parity-check matrix H of a QC code obtained using the method of Tanner et al. We see that the entries in H(D) are all monomials and several rows (columns) have monomial factors. Let us cyclically shift the rows of H. Then the parity-check matrix H'(D) corresponding to the modified matrix H' defines another convolutional code. However, its free distance is lower-bounded by the minimum distance of the original QC code. Also, each row (column) of H'(D) has a factor different from the one in H(D). We show that t…
A decoding algorithm for $q$-ary low-density parity-check codes over the $q$-ary symmetric channel is introduced. The exchanged messages are lists of symbols from $\Fq$. A density evolution analysis for maximum list sizes $1$ and $2$ is developed. Thresholds for selected regular low-density parity-check code ensembles are computed showing gains with respect to a similar algorithm in the literature. Finite-length simulation results confirm the asymptotic analysis.
We propose a new type of short to moderate block-length, linear error-correcting codes, called moderate-density parity-check (MDPC) codes. The number of ones of the parity-check matrix of the codes presented is typically higher than the number of ones of the parity-check matrix of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. But, still lower than those of the parity-check matrix of classical block codes. The proposed MDPC codes are cyclic and are designed by constructing idempotents using cyclotomic cosets. The construction is simple and allows finding short block-length, high-rate codes with good m…
We study recovering parity check relations for an unknown code from intercepted bitstream received from Binary Symmetric Channel in this paper. An iterative column elimination algorithm is introduced which attempts to eliminate parity bits in codewords of noisy data. This algorithm is very practical due to low complexity and use of XOR operator. Since, the computational complexity is low, searching for the length of code and synchronization is possible. Furthermore, the Hamming weight of the parity check words are only used in threshold computation and unlike other algorithms, they have neglig…
In this paper, a simple, general-purpose and effective tool for the design of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes for iterative correction of bursts of erasures is presented. The design method consists in starting from the parity-check matrix of an LDPC code and developing an optimized parity-check matrix, with the same performance on the memory-less erasure channel, and suitable also for the iterative correction of single bursts of erasures. The parity-check matrix optimization is performed by an algorithm called pivot searching and swapping (PSS) algorithm, which executes permutations of c…
The performance of iterative decoding techniques for linear block codes correcting erasures depends very much on the sizes of the stopping sets associated with the underlying Tanner graph, or, equivalently, the parity-check matrix representing the code. In this paper, we introduce the notion of dead-end sets to explicitly demonstrate this dependency. The choice of the parity-check matrix entails a trade-off between performance and complexity. We give bounds on the complexity of iterative decoders achieving optimal performance in terms of the sizes of the underlying parity-check matrices. Furth…
In this paper we study reaction and timing attacks against cryptosystems based on sparse parity-check codes, which encompass low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes and moderate-density parity-check (MDPC) codes. We show that the feasibility of these attacks is not strictly associated to the quasi-cyclic (QC) structure of the code but is related to the intrinsically probabilistic decoding of any sparse parity-check code. So, these attacks not only work against QC codes, but can be generalized to broader classes of codes. We provide a novel algorithm that, in the case of a QC code, allows recover…
Stopping sets, and in particular their numbers and sizes, play an important role in determining the performance of iterative decoders of linear codes over binary erasure channels. In the 2004 Shannon Lecture, McEliece presented an expression for the number of stopping sets of size three for a full-rank parity-check matrix of the Hamming code. In this correspondence, we derive an expression for the number of stopping sets of any given size for the same parity-check matrix.
The connections between variable nodes and check nodes have a great influence on the performance of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. Inspired by the unique structure of polar code's generator matrix, we proposed a new method of constructing LDPC codes that achieves a polarization effect. The new code, named as polarized LDPC codes, is shown to achieve lower or no error floor in the binary symmetric channel (BSC)
We address the problem,`Is a local tree structure sufficient for the local optimality of message passing algorithm in low density parity check codes?'.It is shown that the answer is negative. Using this observation, we pinpoint a flaw in the proof of Theorem 1 in the paper `The Capacity of Low-Density Parity-Check Codes Under Message-Passing Decoding' by Thomas J. Richardson and Rüdiger L.Urbanke\cite{RUCapacity}. We further provide a new proof of that theorem based on a different argument.
Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with the parity-based approach for distributed joint source channel coding (DJSCC) with decoder side information is described in this paper. The parity-based approach is theoretical limit achievable. Different edge degree distributions are used for source variable nodes and parity variable nodes. Particularly, the codeword-averaged density evolution (CADE) is presented for asymmetrically correlated nonuniform sources over the asymmetric memoryless transmission channel. Extensive simulations show that the splitting of variable nodes can improve the coding e…
This paper generalizes the method proposed by Poulliat et al. for the determination of the optimal Galois Field coefficients of a Non-Binary LDPC parity check constraint based on the binary image of the code. Optimal, or almost-optimal, parity check coefficients are given for check degree varying from 4 to 20 and Galois Field varying from GF(64) up to GF(1024). For all given sets of coefficients, no codeword of Hamming weight two exists. A reduced complexity algorithm to compute the binary Hamming weight 3 of a parity check is proposed. When the number of sets of coefficients is too high for a…

We present a novel decoding algorithm for q-ary low-density parity-check codes, termed symbol message passing. The proposed algorithm can be seen as a generalization of Gallager B and the binary message passing algorithm by Lechner et al. to q-ary codes. We derive density evolution equations for the q-ary symmetric channel, compute thresholds for a number of regular low-density parity-check code ensembles, and verify those by Monte Carlo simulations of long channel codes. The proposed algorithm shows performance advantages with respect to an algorithm of comparable complexity from the literatu…
An algorithm for constructing parity-check matrices of non-binary quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (NB QC-LDPC) codes is proposed. The algorithm finds short cycles in the base matrix and tries to eliminate them by selecting the circulants and the elements of GF(q). Firstly the algorithm tries to eliminate the cycles with the smallest number edges going outside the cycle. The efficiency of the algorithm is demonstrated by means of simulations. In particular, it was shown that NB QC-LDPC codes constructed with use of our algorithm loose less that 0.1 dB in comparison to the best NB LDPC cod…

Stopping sets and stopping set distribution of an low-density parity-check code are used to determine the performance of this code under iterative decoding over a binary erasure channel (BEC). Let $C$ be a binary $[n,k]$ linear code with parity-check matrix $H$, where the rows of $H$ may be dependent. A stopping set $S$ of $C$ with parity-check matrix $H$ is a subset of column indices of $H$ such that the restriction of $H$ to $S$ does not contain a row of weight one. The stopping set distribution $\{T_i(H)\}_{i=0}^n$ enumerates the number of stopping sets with size $i$ of $C$ with parity-chec…
This paper presents a design technique for obtaining regular time-invariant low-density parity-check convolutional (RTI-LDPCC) codes with low complexity and good performance. We start from previous approaches which unwrap a low-density parity-check (LDPC) block code into an RTI-LDPCC code, and we obtain a new method to design RTI-LDPCC codes with better performance and shorter constraint length. Differently from previous techniques, we start the design from an array LDPC block code. We show that, for codes with high rate, a performance gain and a reduction in the constraint length are achieved…
A quantized message passing decoding algorithm for low-density parity-check codes is presented. The algorithm relies on the min approximation at the check nodes, and on modelling the variable node inbound messages as observations of an extrinsic discrete memoryless channel. The performance of the algorithm is analyzed and compared to quantized min-sum decoding by means of density evolution, and almost closes the gap with the performance of the sum-product algorithm. A stability analysis is derived, which highlights the role played by degree-$3$ variable nodes in the stability condition. Finite…
Polar codes has been selected as the channel coding scheme for 5G new radio (NR) control channel. Specifically, a special type of parity-check polar (PC-Polar) codes was adopted in uplink control information (UCI). In this paper, we propose a parity-check soft-cancellation (PC-SCAN) algorithm and its simplified version to decode PC-Polar codes. The potential benefits are two-fold. First, PC-SCAN can provide soft output for PC-Polar codes, which is essential for advanced turbo receivers. Second, the decoding performance is better than that of successive cancellation (SC). This is due to the fac…

We consider the effect of log-likelihood ratio saturation on belief propagation decoder low-density parity-check codes. Saturation is commonly done in practice and is known to have a significant effect on error floor performance. Our focus is on threshold analysis and stability of density evolution. We analyze the decoder for standard low-density parity-check code ensembles and show that belief propagation decoding generally degrades gracefully with saturation. Stability of density evolution is, on the other hand, rather strongly effected by saturation and the asymptotic qualitative effect of …
This paper investigates the decoding of a remarkable set of lattices: We treat in a unified framework the Leech lattice in dimension 24, the Nebe lattice in dimension 72, and the Barnes-Wall lattices. A new interesting lattice is constructed as a simple application of single parity-check principle on the Leech lattice. The common aspect of these lattices is that they can be obtained via a single parity check or via the k-ing construction. We exploit these constructions to introduce a new efficient paradigm for decoding. This leads to efficient list decoders and quasi-optimal decoders on the Ga…
In this paper, we investigate absorbing sets, responsible of error floors in Low Density Parity Check codes. We look for a concise, quantitative way to rate the absorbing sets' dangerousness. Based on a simplified model for iterative decoding evolution, we show that absorbing sets exhibit a threshold behavior. An absorbing set with at least one channel log-likelihood-ratio below the threshold can stop the convergence towards the right codeword. Otherwise convergence is guaranteed. We show that absorbing sets with negative thresholds can be deactivated simply using proper saturation levels. We …
Consider transmission over a binary additive white gaussian noise channel using a fixed low-density parity check code. We consider the posterior measure over the code bits and the corresponding correlation between two codebits, averaged over the noise realizations. We show that for low enough noise variance this average correlation decays exponentially fast with the graph distance between the code bits. One consequence of this result is that for low enough noise variance the GEXIT functions (further averaged over a standard code ensemble) of the belief propagation and optimal decoders are the …
Recently, Branco da Silva and Silva described an efficient encoding and decoding algorithm for Construction D$^\prime$ lattices. Using their algorithm, we propose a Construction D$^\prime$ lattice based on binary quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LPDC) codes and single parity-check product codes. The underlying codes designed by the balanced-distances rule contribute in a balanced manner to the squared minimum distance of the constructed lattice, which results in a high lattice coding gain. The proposed lattice based on IEEE 802.16e QC-LDPC codes is shown to provide competitive error-r…
Puncturing is a well-known coding technique widely used for constructing rate-compatible codes. In this paper, we consider the problem of puncturing low-density parity-check codes and propose a new algorithm for intentional puncturing. The algorithm is based on the puncturing of untainted symbols, i.e. nodes with no punctured symbols within their neighboring set. It is shown that the algorithm proposed here performs better than previous proposals for a range of coding rates and short proportions of punctured symbols.
Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes on symmetric memoryless channels have been analyzed using statistical physics by several authors. In this paper, statistical mechanical analysis of LDPC codes is performed for asymmetric memoryless channels and general Markov channels. It is shown that the saddle point equations of the replica symmetric solution for a Markov channel is equivalent to the density evolution of the belief propagation on the factor graph representing LDPC codes on the Markov channel. The derivation uses the method of types for Markov chain.
A joint scheme for the channel coding and spectrum spreading communication system is proposed in this paper. The Bit Error Rate (BER) performance of the joint proposed scheme is evaluated and compared with the case of channel coding scheme without spectrum spreading. We employ a single Low-Density Parity Check (LDPC) code for the both channel coding and direct sequence spectrum spreading. We show that the BER performance is significantly improved while the complexity does not increase too. The philosophy behind this achievement is that the spectrum spreading techniques provide the ability of c…

We derive bounds on the asymptotic density of parity-check matrices and the achievable rates of binary linear block codes transmitted over memoryless binary-input output-symmetric (MBIOS) channels. The lower bounds on the density of arbitrary parity-check matrices are expressed in terms of the gap between the rate of these codes for which reliable communication is achievable and the channel capacity, and the bounds are valid for every sequence of binary linear block codes. These bounds address the question, previously considered by Sason and Urbanke, of how sparse can parity-check matrices of …
We introduce successive cancellation (SC) decoding of product codes (PCs) with single parity-check (SPC) component codes. Recursive formulas are derived, which resemble the SC decoding algorithm of polar codes. We analyze the error probability of SPC-PCs over the binary erasure channel under SC decoding. A bridge with the analysis of PCs introduced by Elias in 1954 is also established. Furthermore, bounds on the block error probability under SC decoding are provided, and compared to the bounds under the original decoding algorithm proposed by Elias. It is shown that SC decoding of SPC-PCs achi…
In this paper, we analyze the error floor of quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes decoded by the sum-product algorithm (SPA) with row layered message-passing scheduling. For this, we develop a linear state-space model of trapping sets (TSs) which incorporates the layered nature of scheduling. We demonstrate that the contribution of each TS to the error floor is not only a function of the topology of the TS, but also depends on the row layers in which different check nodes of the TS are located. This information, referred to as TS layer profile (TSLP), plays an important role…
We solve the problem of designing powerful low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with iterative decoding for the block-fading channel. We first study the case of maximum-likelihood decoding, and show that the design criterion is rather straightforward. Unfortunately, optimal constructions for maximum-likelihood decoding do not perform well under iterative decoding. To overcome this limitation, we then introduce a new family of full-diversity LDPC codes that exhibit near-outage-limit performance under iterative decoding for all block-lengths. This family competes with multiplexed parallel turbo…
An iterative algorithm is presented for soft-input-soft-output (SISO) decoding of Reed-Solomon (RS) codes. The proposed iterative algorithm uses the sum product algorithm (SPA) in conjunction with a binary parity check matrix of the RS code. The novelty is in reducing a submatrix of the binary parity check matrix that corresponds to less reliable bits to a sparse nature before the SPA is applied at each iteration. The proposed algorithm can be geometrically interpreted as a two-stage gradient descent with an adaptive potential function. This adaptive procedure is crucial to the convergence beh…
Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are one of the most promising families of codes to replace the Goppa codes originally used in the McEliece cryptosystem. In fact, it has been shown that by using quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes in this system, drastic reductions in the public key size can be achieved, while maintaining fixed security levels. Recently, some proposals have appeared in the literature using codes with denser parity-check matrices, named moderate-density parity-check (MDPC) codes. However, the density of the parity-check matrices to be used in QC-LDPC code…
The average weight distribution of a regular low-density parity-check (LDPC) code ensemble over a finite field is thoroughly analyzed. In particular, a precise asymptotic approximation of the average weight distribution is derived for the small-weight case, and a series of fundamental qualitative properties of the asymptotic growth rate of the average weight distribution are proved. Based on this analysis, a general result, including all previous results as special cases, is established for the minimum distance of individual codes in a regular LDPC code ensemble.
The paper introduces new bounds on the asymptotic density of parity-check matrices and the achievable rates under ML decoding of binary linear block codes transmitted over memoryless binary-input output-symmetric channels. The lower bounds on the parity-check density are expressed in terms of the gap between the channel capacity and the rate of the codes for which reliable communication is achievable, and are valid for every sequence of binary linear block codes. The bounds address the question, previously considered by Sason and Urbanke, of how sparse can parity-check matrices of binary linea…
Efficient information reconciliation is crucial in several scenarios, being quantum key distribution a remarkable example. However, efficiency is not the only requirement for determining the quality of the information reconciliation process. In some of these scenarios we find other relevant parameters such as the interactivity or the adaptability to different channel statistics. We propose an interactive protocol for information reconciliation based on low-density parity-check codes. The coding rate is adapted in real time by using simultaneously puncturing and shortening strategies, allowing …
In this paper, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with column-weight three to correct three errors when decoded using hard-decision message-passing decoding. Additionally, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for column-weight-four codes to correct three errors in four iterations of hard-decision message-passing decoding. We then give a construction technique which results in codes satisfying these conditions. We also provide numerical assessment of code performance via simulation results.

A generic $(r,m)$-erasure correcting set is a collection of vectors in $\bF_2^r$ which can be used to generate, for each binary linear code of codimension $r$, a collection of parity check equations that enables iterative decoding of all correctable erasure patterns of size at most $m$. That is to say, the only stopping sets of size at most $m$ for the generated parity check equations are the erasure patterns for which there is more than one manner to fill in theerasures to obtain a codeword. We give an explicit construction of generic $(r,m)$-erasure correcting sets of cardinality $\sum_{i=0}…

Algebraic codes such as BCH code are receiving renewed interest as their short block lengths and low/no error floors make them attractive for ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) in 5G wireless networks. This paper aims at enhancing the traditional adaptive belief propagation (ABP) decoding, which is a soft-in-soft-out (SISO) decoding for high-density parity-check (HDPC) algebraic codes, such as Reed-Solomon (RS) codes, Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) codes, and product codes. The key idea of traditional ABP is to sparsify certain columns of the parity-check matrix corresponding …
We present a new family of low-density parity-check (LDPC) convolutional codes that can be designed using ordered sets of progressive differences. We study their properties and define a subset of codes in this class that have some desirable features, such as fixed minimum distance and Tanner graphs without short cycles. The design approach we propose ensures that these properties are guaranteed independently of the code rate. This makes these codes of interest in many practical applications, particularly when high rate codes are needed for saving bandwidth. We provide some examples of coded tr…
A class of doubly-generalized low-density parity-check (D-GLDPC) codes, where single parity-check (SPC) codes are used as variable nodes (VNs), is investigated. An expression for the growth rate of the weight distribution of any D-GLDPC ensemble with a uniform check node (CN) set is presented at first, together with an analytical technique for its efficient evaluation. These tools are then used for detailed analysis of a case study, namely, a rate-1/2 D-GLDPC ensemble where all the CNs are (7,4) Hamming codes and all the VNs are length-7 SPC codes. It is illustrated how the VN representations …

A $q$-ary $(n,k,r)$ locally repairable code (LRC) is an $[n,k,d]$ linear code over $\mathbb{F}_q$ such that every code symbol can be recovered by accessing at most $r$ other code symbols. The well-known Singleton-like bound says that $d \le n-k-\lceil k/r\rceil +2$ and an LRC is said to be optimal if it attains this bound. In this paper, we study the bounds and constructions of LRCs from the view of parity-check matrices. Firstly, a simple and unified framework based on parity-check matrix to analyze the bounds of LRCs is proposed. Several useful structural properties on $q$-ary optimal LRCs a…

Goppa codes are particularly appealing for cryptographic applications. Every improvement of our knowledge of Goppa codes is of particular interest. In this paper, we present a sufficient and necessary condition for an irreducible monic polynomial $g(x)$ of degree $r$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ satisfying $γg(x)=(x+d)^rg({A}(x))$, where $q=2^n$, $A=\left(\begin{array}{cc} a&b\\1&d\end{array}\right)\in PGL_2(\Bbb F_{q})$, $\mathrm{ord}(A)$ is a prime, $g(a)\ne 0$, and $0\ne γ\in \Bbb F_q$. And we give a complete characterization of irreducible polynomials $g(x)$ of degree $2s$ or $3s$ as above, where…
Consider communication over a binary-input memoryless output-symmetric channel with low density parity check (LDPC) codes and maximum a posteriori (MAP) decoding. The replica method of spin glass theory allows to conjecture an analytic formula for the average input-output conditional entropy per bit in the infinite block length limit. Montanari proved a lower bound for this entropy, in the case of LDPC ensembles with convex check degree polynomial, which matches the replica formula. Here we extend this lower bound to any irregular LDPC ensemble. The new feature of our work is an analysis of th…
We introduce a thermodynamic (large deviation) formalism for computing error exponents in error-correcting codes. Within this framework, we apply the heuristic cavity method from statistical mechanics to derive the average and typical error exponents of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes on the binary erasure channel (BEC) under maximum-likelihood decoding.
Much progress has been made on decoding algorithms for error-correcting codes in the last decade. In this article, we give an introduction to some fundamental results on iterative, message-passing algorithms for low-density parity check codes. For certain important stochastic channels, this line of work has enabled getting very close to Shannon capacity with algorithms that are extremely efficient (both in theory and practice).
In this paper, two-user Gaussian interference channel(GIC) is revisited with the objective of developing implementable (explicit) channel codes. Specifically, low density parity check (LDPC) codes are adopted for use over these channels, and their benefits are studied. Different scenarios on the level of interference are considered. In particular, for strong interference channel examples with binary phase shift keying (BPSK), it is demonstrated that rates better than those offered by single user codes with time sharing are achievable. Promising results are also observed with quadrature-shift-k…
