Much progress has been made on decoding algorithms for error-correcting codes in the last decade. In this article, we give an introduction to some fundamental results on iterative, message-passing algorithms for low-density parity check codes. For certain important stochastic channels, this line of work has enabled getting very close to Shannon capacity with algorithms that are extremely efficient (both in theory and practice).
We introduce successive cancellation (SC) decoding of product codes (PCs) with single parity-check (SPC) component codes. Recursive formulas are derived, which resemble the SC decoding algorithm of polar codes. We analyze the error probability of SPC-PCs over the binary erasure channel under SC decoding. A bridge with the analysis of PCs introduced by Elias in 1954 is also established. Furthermore, bounds on the block error probability under SC decoding are provided, and compared to the bounds under the original decoding algorithm proposed by Elias. A decoding algorithm for $q$-ary low-density parity-check codes over the $q$-ary symmetric channel is introduced. The exchanged messages are lists of symbols from $\Fq$. A density evolution analysis for maximum list sizes $1$ and $2$ is developed. Thresholds for selected regular low-density parity-check code ensembles are computed showing gains with respect to a similar algorithm in the literature. Finite-length simulation results confirm the asymptotic analysis.
An efficient decoding algorithm for horizontally u-interleaved LRPC codes is proposed and analyzed. Upper bounds on the decoding failure rate and the computational complexity of the algorithm are derived. It is shown that interleaving reduces the decoding failure rate exponentially in the interleaving order u whereas the computational complexity grows linearly.
We address the problem,`Is a local tree structure sufficient for the local optimality of message passing algorithm in low density parity check codes?'.It is shown that the answer is negative. Using this observation, we pinpoint a flaw in the proof of Theorem 1 in the paper `The Capacity of Low-Density Parity-Check Codes Under Message-Passing Decoding' by Thomas J. Richardson and Rüdiger L.Urbanke\cite{RUCapacity}. We further provide a new proof of that theorem based on a different argument.

A new method for identifying the automorphism groups of RS binary images is first developed. The concept of parity check matrices of linear binary codes has been extended by Heden [9] to parity check systems of nonlinear binary codes. In the present paper we extend this concept to parity check systems of nonlinear codes over finite commutative Frobenius rings. Using parity check systems, results on how to get some fundamental properties of the codes are given. Moreover, parity check systems and its connection to characters is investigated and a MacWilliams type theorem on the distance distribution is given.

Saturation is commonly done in practice and is known to have a significant effect on error floor performance. Our focus is on threshold analysis and stability of density evolution. In this paper we present an extended variant of low rank parity check matrix (LRPC) codes that have received significant interests in recent years. Block codes are typically not used for fading channels as soft decision decoding is computationally intensive and hard decision decoding results in performance loss. In this paper we propose a diversity preserving hard decision decoding scheme for parity check codes (PCC) over Rayleigh fading channels.
