We describe the large $N$ saddle point, and the structure of fluctuations about the saddle point, of a theory containing a sharp, critical Fermi surface in two spatial dimensions. The theory describes the onset of Ising order in a Fermi liquid, and closely related theories apply to other cases with critical Fermi surfaces. We employ random couplings in flavor space between the fermions and the bosonic order parameter, but there is no spatial randomness: consequently, the $G$-$Σ$ path integral of the theory is expressed in terms of fields bilocal in spacetime. The critical exponents of the large $N$ saddle-point are the same as in the well-studied non-random RPA theory; in particular, the entropy density vanishes in the limit of zero temperature. We present a full numerical solution of the large $N$ saddle-point equations, and the results agree with the critical behavior obtained analytically. Following analyses of Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models, we describe scaling operators which descend from fermion bilinears around the Fermi surface. This leads to a systematic consideration of the role of time reparameterization symmetry, and the scaling of the Cooper pairing and $2k_F$ operators which can determine associated instabilities of the critical Fermi surface. We find no violations of scaling from time reparameterizations. We also consider the same model but with spatially random couplings: this provides a systematic large $N$ theory of a marginal Fermi liquid with Planckian transport.
In this paper, we study the fermionic excitations near the quantum criticality using gauge/gravity duality. This is motivated by exploring the Fermi surface evolution near the quantum criticality. We construct the gravity dual of "paramagnetic-nematic" phase transition in a continuum limit and study the Fermi surface evolution across this quantum phase transition. We find that there exists non-Fermi liquid with the Fermi surface in the "paramagnetic" phase and the Fermi surface disappears in the "nematic" phase.
At the low energy regime, the decay rate of two-dimensional massless Dirac fermions due to interactions can be written as $\mathrm{Im}Σ(ω) \propto |ω|^{x}$ at zero temperature. We find that the fermion system has: I) no sharp Fermi surface and no well-defined quasiparticle peak for $0<x<1/2$; II) a sharp Fermi surface but no well-defined quasiparticle peak for $1/2\leq x\leq 1$; III) both sharp Fermi surface and well-defined quasiparticle peak for $x>1$. In the presence of long-range gauge/Coulomb interaction or certain massless boson mode, the system exhibits unusual behavior belonging to cla…
We study the fermionic spectral density in a strongly correlated quantum system described by a gravity dual. In the presence of periodically modulated chemical potential, which models the effect of the ionic lattice, we explore the shapes of the corresponding Fermi surfaces, defined by the location of peaks in the spectral density at the Fermi level. We find that at strong lattice potentials sectors of the Fermi surface are unexpectedly destroyed and the Fermi surface becomes an arc-like disconnected manifold. We explain this phenomenon in terms of a collision of the Fermi surface pole with ze…
Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we calculate a fermionic spectral function in a 2+1 dimensional non-relativistic quantum field theory which is dual to a gravitational theory in the $AdS_4$ background with a charged black hole. The spectral function shows no quasiparticle peak but the Fermi surface is still well defined. Interestingly, all momentum points inside the Fermi surface are critical and the gapless modes are defined in a {\it critical Fermi ball} in the momentum space.
We study low-energy effective field theories for non-Fermi liquids with Fermi surfaces of general dimensions and co-dimensions. When the dimension of Fermi surface is greater than one, low-energy particle-hole excitations remain strongly coupled with each other across the entire Fermi surface. In this case, even the observables that are local in the momentum space (such as the Green's functions) become dependent on the size of the Fermi surface in singular ways, resulting in an ultraviolet/infrared (UV/IR) mixing. By tuning the dimension and co-dimension of the Fermi surface independently, we …
We give a unified overview of the zero temperature phases of compressible quantum matter: i.e. phases in which the expectation value of a globally conserved U(1) density, Q, varies smoothly as a function of parameters. Provided the global U(1) and translational symmetries are unbroken, such phases are expected to have Fermi surfaces, and the Luttinger theorem relates the volumes enclosed by these Fermi surfaces to <Q>. We survey models of interacting bosons and/or fermions and/or gauge fields which realize such phases. Some phases have Fermi surfaces with the singularities of Landau's Fermi li…
We develop a new method for bosonizing the Fermi surface based on the formalism of the coadjoint orbits. This allows one to parametrize the Fermi surface by a bosonic field that depends on the spacetime coordinates and on the position on the Fermi surface. The Wess-Zumino-Witten term in the effective action, governing the adiabatic phase acquired when the Fermi surface changes its shape, is completely fixed. As an effective field theory the action also involves a Hamiltonian which contains, beside the kinetic energy and the Landau interaction, terms with arbitrary number of derivatives and fie…
We use holography to study the ground state of a system with interacting bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom at finite density. The gravitational model consists of Einstein-Maxwell gravity coupled to a perfect fluid of charged fermions and to a charged scalar field which interact through a current-current interaction. When the scalar field is non-trivial, in addition to compact electron stars, the screening of the fermion electric charge by the scalar condensate allows the formation of solutions where the fermion fluid is made of antiparticles, as well as solutions with coexisting, separa…
We study the physics of 3d supersymmetric abelian gauge theories (with small supersymmetry breaking perturbations) at finite density. Using mirror symmetry, which provides a natural generalization of the duality between the XY model and the abelian Higgs model but now including fermionic fields, we see many dynamical phenomena conjectured to be of relevance in condensed matter systems. In particular, we find examples of the emergence of a Fermi surface at low energies from hybridization of fermions localized at magnetic defects at high energies, as well as fractionalization of charged fermions…
We devise a dimensional regularization scheme for quantum field theories with Fermi surface to study scaling behaviour of non-Fermi liquid states in a controlled approximation. Starting from a Fermi surface in two space dimensions, the co-dimension of Fermi surface is extended to a general value while the dimension of Fermi surface is fixed. When Fermi surface is coupled with a critical boson centered at zero momentum, the interaction becomes marginal at a critical space dimension d_c=5/2. A deviation from the critical dimension is used as a small parameter for a systematic expansion. We apply…
The Fermi liquid has an emergent low-energy symmetry that corresponds to charge conservation at each momentum on the Ferm surface. Recently Else, Thorngren and Senthil (ETS) argued that the emergent symmetry had a specific t'Hooft anomaly. We give a simple derivation of the ETS anomaly using the chiral anomaly of Weyl fermions.
The Fermi surface may be usefully viewed as a collection of 1+1 dimensional chiral conformal field theories. This approach permits straightforward calculation of many anomalous ground state properties of the Fermi gas including entanglement entropy and number fluctuations. The 1+1 dimensional picture also generalizes to finite temperature and the presence of interactions. Finally, I argue that the low energy entanglement structure of Fermi liquid theory is universal, depending only on the geometry of the interacting Fermi surface.
Electron-electron interactions can induce Fermi surface deformations which break the point-group symmetry of the lattice structure of the system. In the vicinity of such a "Pomeranchuk instability" the Fermi surface is easily deformed by anisotropic perturbations, and exhibits enhanced collective fluctuations. We show that critical Fermi surface fluctuations near a d-wave Pomeranchuk instability in two dimensions lead to large anisotropic decay rates for single-particle excitations, which destroy Fermi liquid behavior over the whole surface except at the Brillouin zone diagonal.
The role of "Fermi arc" surface-quasiparticle states in "topological metals" (where some Fermi surface sheets have non-zero Chern number) is examined. They act as "Fermi-level plumbing" conduits that transfer quasiparticles among groups of apparently-disconnected Fermi sheets with non-zero Chern numbers to maintain equality of their chemical potentials, which is required by gauge invariance. Fermi arcs have a chiral tangential attachment to the surface projections of sheets of the bulk Fermi Surface: the total Chern number of each projection equals the net chirality of arc-attachments to it. I…
A topological crossover, associated with the collapse of the Fermi surface in strongly correlated Fermi systems, is examined. It is demonstrated that in these systems, the temperature domain where standard Fermi liquid results hold dramatically narrows, because the Landau regime is replaced by a classical one. The impact of the collapse of the Fermi surface on pairing correlations is analyzed. In the domain of the Lifshitz phase diagram where the Fermi surface collapses, splitting of the BCS superconducting phase transition into two different ones of the same symmetry is shown to occur.
We investigate the probe holographic fermions by using an anisotropic charged black brane solution. We derive the equation of motion of probe bulk fermions with one Fermi momentum along the anisotropic and one along the isotropic directions. We then numerically solve the equation and analyze the properties of Green function with these two momentums. We find in this case the shape of Fermi surface is anisotropic. However, for both Fermi momentums perpendicular to the anisotropic direction, the Fermi surface is isotropic. We verify that our system obeys the recently conjectured bound for thermoe…
We calculate the interaction-induced deformation of the Fermi surface in the two-dimensional Hubbard model within second order perturbation theory. Close to half-filling, interactions enhance anisotropies of the Fermi surface, but they never modify the topology of the Fermi surface in the weak coupling regime.
We present quantum oscillation measurements of YbRh2Si2 at magnetic fields above the Kondo-suppression scale H0 ~ 10 T. Comparison with electronic structure calculations is complicated because the "small" Fermi surface, where the Yb 4f-quasi-hole is not contributing to the Fermi volume, and "large" Fermi surface, where the Yb 4f-quasi-hole is contributing to the Fermi volume, are related by a rigid Fermi energy shift. This means that spin-split branches of the large Fermi surface can look like unsplit branches of the small surface, and vice-versa. Thus, although the high-field angle dependence…
We present a functional renormalization group analysis of a quantum critical point in two-dimensional metals involving Fermi surface reconstruction due to the onset of spin-density wave order. Its critical theory is controlled by a fixed point in which the order parameter and fermionic quasiparticles are strongly coupled and acquire spectral functions with a common dynamic critical exponent. We obtain results for critical exponents and for the variation in the quasiparticle spectral weight around the Fermi surface. Our analysis is implemented on a two-band variant of the spin-fermion model whi…
Nonrelativistic Fermi liquids in d+1 dimensions exhibit generalized Fermi surfaces: (d-p)-dimensional submanifolds in the momentum-frequency space supporting gapless excitations. We show that the universality classes of stable Fermi surfaces are classified by K-theory, with the pattern of stability determined by Bott periodicity. The Atiyah-Bott-Shapiro construction implies that the low-energy modes near a Fermi surface exhibit relativistic invariance in the transverse p+1 dimensions. This suggests an intriguing parallel between norelativistic Fermi liquids and D-branes of string theory.
We compute parameters characterizing many-body quantum chaos for a critical Fermi surface without quasiparticle excitations. We examine a theory of $N$ species of fermions at non-zero density coupled to a $U(1)$ gauge field in two spatial dimensions, and determine the Lyapunov rate and the butterfly velocity in an extended random-phase approximation. The thermal diffusivity is found to be universally related to these chaos parameters i.e. the relationship is independent of $N$, the gauge coupling constant, the Fermi velocity, the Fermi surface curvature, and high energy details.
Ce 3d-4f resonant angle-resolved photoemission measurements on CeCoGe$_{1.2}$Si$_{0.8}$ and CeCoSi$_{2}$ have been performed to understand the Fermi surface topology as a function of hybridization strength between Ce 4$f$- and conduction electrons in heavy-fermion systems. We directly observe that the hole-like Ce 4$f$-Fermi surfaces of CeCoSi$_{2}$ is smaller than that of CeCoGe$_{1.2}$Si$_{0.8}$, indicating the evolution of the Ce 4$f$-Fermi surface with the increase of the hybridization strength. In comparision with LDA calculation, the Fermi surface variation cannot be understood even thou…
At certain quantum critical points in metals an entire Fermi surface may disappear. A crucial question is the nature of the electronic excitations at the critical point. Here we provide arguments showing that at such quantum critical points the Fermi surface remains sharply defined even though the Landau quasiparticle is absent. The presence of such a critical Fermi surface has a number of consequences for the universal phenomena near the quantum critical point which are discussed. In particular the structure of scaling of the universal critical singularities can be significantly modified from…
The Fermi surface of the Bi2212 system is systematically studied using a variety of photon energies. In addition to reconciling the conflicting reports on the Fermi surface of this important material, we identify almost perfectly nested Fermi surface segments parallel to the $(1,0)$ or $(0,1)$ direction. This general yet long overlooked feature of the Fermi surface is intriguingly similar to the Fermi surface of the $La_{1.48}Nd_{0.4}Sr_{0.12}CuO_4$ system.
Free fermions with a finite Fermi surface are known to exhibit an anomalously large entanglement entropy. The leading contribution to the entanglement entropy of a region of linear size $L$ in $d$ spatial dimensions is $S\sim L^{d-1} \log{L}$, a result that should be contrasted with the usual boundary law $S \sim L^{d-1}$. This term depends only on the geometry of the Fermi surface and on the boundary of the region in question. I give an intuitive account of this anomalous scaling based on a low energy description of the Fermi surface as a collection of one dimensional gapless modes. Using thi…
A purely Fermi-surface formula is proposed for the Ohmic "minimum metallic conductivity" tensor of clean metals with "Planckian limit" inelastic dissipation. This revises a recent proposal by Legros et al.
We argue that Landau-Fermi liquids do not have any gravity duals in the purely classical limit. We employ the logarithmic behavior of entanglement entropy to characterize the existence of Fermi surfaces. By imposing the null energy condition, we show that the specific heat always behaves anomalously. We also present a classical gravity dual which has the expected behavior of the entanglement entropy and specific heat for non-Fermi liquids.
One of the fundamental questions about the high temperature cuprate superconductors is the size of the Fermi surface (FS) underlying the superconducting state. By analyzing the single particle spectral function for the Fermi Hubbard model as a function of repulsion $U$ and chemical potential $μ$, we find that the Fermi surface in the normal state reconstructs from a large Fermi surface matching the Luttinger volume as expected in a Fermi liquid, to a Fermi surface that encloses fewer electrons that we dub the "Luttinger Breaking" (LB) phase, as the Mott insulator is approached. This transition…
Regularity of the deformation of the Fermi surface under short-range interactions is established for all contributions to the RPA self-energy (it is proven in an accompanying paper that the RPA graphs are the least regular contributions to the self-energy). Roughly speaking, the graphs contributing to the RPA self-energy are those constructed by contracting two external legs of a four-legged graph that consists of a string of bubbles. This regularity is a necessary ingredient in the proof that renormalization does not change the model. It turns out that the self--energy is more regular when de…
Fermions in the Fermi gas obey the Pauli exclusion principle restricting any two fermions from filling the same quantum state. Strong interaction between fermions can completely change the properties of the Fermi gas. In our theoretical study we find a new exotic quantum phase in strongly interacting Fermi gases constrained to a certain condition imposed on the Fermi surfaces which we call the Fermi surface resonance. The new phase is quantum critical which can be identified by the power-law frequency tail of the spectral density and divergent static susceptibilities. An especially striking fe…
An emergent Fermi surface in a Mott insulator, an exotic quantum spin liquid state, was suggested by Anderson in 1987. After a quick support for its existence in spin-half Heisenberg model in a square lattice in a RVB mean field theory, pseudo Fermi surface was found only recently in an exactly solvable spin-3/2 model by Yao, Zhang and Kivelson. We show that a minimal spin-half Kitaev model on a decorated square lattice exhibits a Fermi surface. Volume and shape of the Fermi surface change with exchange couplings or on addition of a 3 spin interaction terms.
We bring resolution to the longstanding problem relating Fermi surface reconstruction to the number of holes contained within the Fermi surface volume in underdoped high Tc superconductors. On considering uniaxial and biaxial charge-density wave order, we show that there exists a relationship between the ordering wave vector, the hole doping and the cross-sectional area of the reconstructed Fermi surface whose precise form depends on the volume of the starting Fermi surface. We consider a `large' starting Fermi surface comprising 1+p hole carriers, as predicted by band structure calculations, …
We report magnetic quantum oscillations measured using torque magnetisation in the Kondo insulator YbB$_{12}$ and discuss the potential origin of the underlying Fermi surface. Observed quantum oscillations as well as complementary quantities such as a finite linear specific heat capacity in YbB$_{12}$ exhibit similarities with the Kondo insulator SmB$_6$, yet also crucial differences. Small heavy Fermi sections are observed in YbB$_{12}$ with similarities to the neighbouring heavy fermion semimetallic Fermi surface, in contrast to large light Fermi surface sections in SmB$_6$ which are more si…
The notion of the electron Fermi surface is one of the characteristic concepts in the field of condensed matter physics, and it plays a crucial role in the understanding of the physical properties of doped Mott insulators. Based on the t-J model, we study the nature of the electron Fermi surface in the cobaltates, and qualitatively reproduce the essential feature of the evolution of the electron Fermi surface with doping. It is shown that the underlying hexagonal electron Fermi surface obeys Luttinger's theorem. The theory also predicts a Fermi-arc phenomenon at the low-doped regime, where the…
We study ground state properties of periodic Anderson model in a two-dimensional square lattice with variational Monte Carlo method. It is shown that there are two different types of quantum phase transition: a conventional antiferromagnetic transition and a Fermi-surface reconstruction which accompanies a change of topology of the Fermi surface. The former is induced by a simple back-folding of the Fermi surface while the latter is induced by localization of $f$ electrons. The mechanism of these transitions and the relation to the recent experiments on Fermi surface are discussed in detail.
We show that introduction of vertex corrections in the fully self-consistent ladder approximation does not modify dynamics of spinons and gauge fluctuations in the U(1) gauge theory with Fermi surface.
We study ferromagnetism in the periodic Anderson model with and without a magnetic field by the Gutzwiller theory. We find three ferromagnetic phases: a weak ferromagnetic phase (FM0), a half-metallic phase without Fermi surface for the majority spin (FM1), and a ferromagnetic phase with almost completely polarized f-electrons (FM2). The Fermi surface changes from the large Fermi-surface in the paramagnetic state to the small Fermi-surface in FM2. We also find that the transitions between the ferromagnetic phases can be second-order phase transitions in spite of the absence of symmetry breakin…
We discuss the effect of Fermi surface curvature on long-distance/time asymptotic behaviors of two-dimensional fermions interacting via a gapless mode described by an effective gauge field-like propagator. By comparing the predictions based on the idea of multi-dimensional bosonization with those of the strong- coupling Eliashberg approach, we demonstrate that an agreement between the two requires a further extension of the former technique.
The electron-electron interactions affect the low-energy excitations of an electronic system and induce deformations of the Fermi surface. These effects are especially important in anisotropic materials with strong correlations, such as copper oxides superconductors or ruthenates. Here we analyze the deformations produced by electronic correlations in the Fermi surface of anisotropic two-dimensional systems, treating the regular and singular regions of the Fermi surface on the same footing. Simple analytical expressions are obtained for the corrections, based on local features of the Fermi sur…
We consider the Fermi surface inside the antiferromagnetic ordered region of a Kondo lattice system in an arbitrary dimension higher than one. We establish the existence of ${\rm AF_S}$, an antiferromagnetic phase whose Fermi surface is ``small,'' in the sense that the local moments do not participate in the Fermi-surface formation. This is in contrast to the ``large'' Fermi surface that is typically assumed for heavy fermion metals. We extend our earlier work to the case that the Fermi surface of the conduction electrons intersects the antiferromagnetic Brillouin zone boundary. Our results pr…
We present a sign-problem free quantum Monte Carlo study of a model that exhibits quantum phase transitions without symmetry breaking and associated changes in the size of the Fermi surface. The model is an Ising gauge theory on the square lattice coupled to an Ising matter field and spinful `orthogonal' fermions at half-filling, both carrying Ising gauge charges. In contrast to previous studies, our model hosts an electron-like, gauge-neutral fermion excitation providing access to Fermi liquid phases. One of the phases of the model is a previously studied orthogonal semi-metal, which has $\ma…
A phenomenological theory is presented for two-dimensional quantum liquids in terms of the Fermi surface geometry. It is shown that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the properties of an interacting electron system and its corresponding Fermi surface. By doing this, the concept of Fermi surface is generalized to include different topologies. It is shown that for a Fermi liquid the corresponding Fermi surface is rough. In the presence of a condensate, the Fermi surface is faceted, while for a ferromagnetc instability, the Fermi surface becomes a frozen solid. I also determine the sur…
We propose an experiment to identify the potential existence of a spinon Fermi surface by looking for oscillatory coupling between two ferromagnets via a spin liquid spacer. Three candidate spin liquids are investigated, and it is found that in all cases, long period oscillations should be present, the period of which would identify the Fermi wavevector of the spinon surface.
We argue that topological Kondo insulators can also have 'intrinsic' topological order associated with fractionalized excitations on their surfaces. The hydridization between the local moments and conduction electrons can weaken near the surface, and this enables the local moments to form spin liquids. This co-exists with the conduction electron surface states, realizing a surface fractionalized Fermi liquid. We present mean-field solutions of a Kondo-Heisenberg model which display such surfaces.
We study the Fermi surface topological transition of the pocket-opening type in a two dimensional Fermi liquid with spin-orbit coupling of Rashba type. We find that the interactions, far from instabilities, drive the transition first order at zero temperature surprisingly in a more pronounced way than in the case of interacting Fermi liquid without spin-orbit coupling. We first gain insight from second order perturbation theory in the self-energy. We then extend the results to stronger interaction, using the self-consistent fluctuation approximation. We discuss existing experimental work on th…
U(1) gauge theory of non-relativistic fermions interacting via compact U(1) gauge fields in the presence of a Fermi surface appears as an effective field theory in low dimensional quantum antiferromagnetism and heavy fermion liquids. We investigate deconfinement of fermions near the Fermi surface in the effective U(1) gauge theory. Our present analysis benchmarks the recent investigation of quantum electrodynamics in two space and one time dimensions ($QED_3$) by Hermele et al. [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 70}, 214437 (2004)]. Utilizing a renormalization group analysis, we show that the effective U(1) g…
We study an exactly solvable quantum spin model of Kitaev type on the kagome lattice. We find a rich phase diagram which includes a topological (gapped) chiral spin liquid with gapless chiral edge states, and a gapless chiral spin liquid phase with a spin Fermi surface. The ground state of the current model contains an odd number of electrons per unit cell which qualitatively distinguishes it from previously studied exactly solvable models with a spin Fermi surface. Moreover, we show that the spin Fermi surface is stable against weak perturbations.
A quantum phase transition in strongly correlated Fermi systems beyond the topological quantum critical point is studied within the Fermi liquid approach. The transition occurs between two topologically equivalent states, each with three sheets of the Fermi surface. One of these states possesses a quasiparticle halo in the quasiparticle momentum distribution $n(p)$, while the other, the hole pocket. The transition is found to be of the first order with respect to both the coupling constant $g$ and the temperature $T$. The phase diagram of the system in the vicinity of this transition is constr…
We have measured details of the quasi one-dimensional Fermi-surface sections in the organic superconductor kappa-(BEDT-TTF)_2 Cu(NCS)_2 and its deuterated analogue using angle-dependent millimetre-wave techniques. There are significant differences in the corrugations of the Fermi surfaces in the deuterated and undeuterated salts. We suggest that this is important in understanding the inverse isotope effect, where the superconducting transition temperature rises on deuteration. The data support models for superconductivity which invoke electron-electron interactions depending on the topological…
This paper is concerned with the weak-moment magnetism in heavy-fermion materials and its relation to the non-Fermi liquid physics observed near the transition to the Fermi liquid. We explore the hypothesis that the primary fluctuations responsible for the non-Fermi liquid physics are those associated with the destruction of the large Fermi surface of the Fermi liquid. Magnetism is suggested to be a low-energy instability of the resulting small Fermi surface state. A concrete realization of this picture is provided by a fractionalized Fermi liquid state which has a small Fermi surface of condu…
We propose a general theoretical framework, using two layers of ancilla qubits, for deconfined criticality between a Fermi liquid with a large Fermi surface, and a pseudogap metal with a small Fermi surface of electron-like quasiparticles. The pseudogap metal can be a magnetically ordered metal, or a fractionalized Fermi liquid (FL*) without magnetic order. A critical 'ghost' Fermi surface emerges (alongside the large electron Fermi surface) at the transition, with the ghost fermions carrying neither spin nor charge, but minimally coupled to $(U(1) \times U(1))/Z_2$ or $(SU(2) \times U(1))/Z_2…
Wilson-loop has been widely used to characterize the topological property of topological insulators, high order topological insulators and topological semimetals. Both bulk topological invariants and nontrivial boundary properties can be deduced from the topology of Wilson-loop spectrum. However, no attempt has been made to observe it. In this letter we demonstrate the topology of Wilson-loop spectrum can be observed by using the existing technology for observing surface-state Fermi arc. We predict that the surface-state Fermi arc sweeps the whole surface Brillouin zone in a continuous periodi…
We discuss how stripes in cuprates can be compatible with a Fermi-liquid-like Fermi surface and, at the same time, they give rise to a one-dimensional-like pseudo Fermi surface in the momentum distribution function.
Formal similarity between k- area for the contribution from ZR-states and the remnant Fermi surface has been found. Presence of the contribution from 3B_{1g}- states at other k- area means the two-channel processes of scattering. As consequence, the method of integration with a constant energy interval reproduces not only remnant Fermi surface at least, but one of the contributions of above states to the total spectral intensity
We consider a system of 2D interacting fermions with a flat Fermi surface. The apparent conflict between Luttinger and non Luttinger liquid behavior found through different approximations is resolved by showing the existence of a line of non trivial fixed points, for the RG flow, corresponding to Luttinger liquid behavior; the presence of marginally relevant operators can cause flow away from the fixed point. The analysis is non-perturbative and based on the implementation, at each RG iteration, of Ward Identities obtained from local phase transformations depending on the Fermi surface side, i…
The search for a Fermi surface in the absence of a conventional Fermi liquid has thus far yielded very few potential candidates. Among promising materials are spin-frustrated Mott insulators near the insulator-metal transition, where theory predicts a Fermi surface associated with neutral low energy excitations. Here we reveal another route to experimentally realise a Fermi surface in the absence of a Fermi liquid by the experimental study of a Kondo insulator SmB$_6$ positioned close to the insulator-metal transition. We present experimental signatures down to low temperatures ($\ll 1$ K) ass…
We calculate the Fermi surface and the anisotropic heavy masses of UPd2Al3 by keeping two of the 5f electrons as localized. Good agreement with experiments is found. The theory contains essentially no adjustable parameter except for a small shift of the position of the Fermi energy of the order of a few meV. A discussion is given why localization of two f electrons is justified.
