Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we calculate a fermionic spectral function in a 2+1 dimensional non-relativistic quantum field theory which is dual to a gravitational theory in the $AdS_4$ background with a charged black hole. The spectral function shows no quasiparticle peak but the Fermi surface is still well defined. Interestingly, all momentum points inside the Fermi surface are critical and the gapless modes are defined in a {\it critical Fermi ball} in the momentum space.
A radiation-ball solution which is identified as a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole is found out. The radiation-ball, which is derived by analyzing the backreaction of the Hawking radiation into space-time, consists of radiation trapped in a ball by a deep gravitational potential and of a singularity. The Hawking radiation is regarded as a leak-out of the radiation from the ball. The gravitational potential becomes deep as the charge becomes large, however, the basic structure of the ball is independent of the charge. The extremal-charged black hole corresponds with the fully frozen ball by the i…
We construct electrically charged Q-balls and boson stars in a model with a scalar self-interaction potential resulting from gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking. We discuss the properties of these solutions in detail and emphasize the differences to the uncharged case. We observe that Q-balls can only be constructed up to a maximal value of the charge of the scalar field, while for boson stars the interplay between the attractive gravitational force and the repulsive electromagnetic force determines their behaviour. We find that the vacuum is stable with respect to pair production in the pre…
The stability of a Fermi ball (F-ball), which is a kind of non-topological soliton accompanying the breakdown of the approximate $Z_2$ symmetry, is investigated in three situations: the case it is electrically neutral, the case it is electrically charged and unscreened, and the case it is electrically charged and screened. We argue only the third case is physically meaningful since the neutral F-ball is unstable and the case of the unscreened charged one is observationally excluded when it has a sizable contribution to CDM. We found that the energy scale of the breakdown of the approximate $Z_…
Fermi Ball is a kind of nontopological soliton with fermions trapped in its domain wall, and is suggested to arises from the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the approximate $Z_2$ symmetry in the early universe. We find that the neutral thin-wall Fermi Ball is stable in the limited region of the scalar self-coupling constant $λ$ and the Yukawa coupling constant $G$. We find that the Fermi Ball is stabilized due to the curvature effect of the domain wall caused by the fermion sector. We also discuss whether such stable Fermi Balls may contribute to the cold dark matter.
A simple model is presented where the disappearance of domain walls and the associated production of ``Fermi balls'', which have been proposed as candidates for cold dark matter, are features which arise rather naturally in response to softly broken supersymmetry.
In this note, we study the dipole coupling effect of holographic fermion in a charged dilatonic black hole proposed by Gubser and Rocha (arXiv:0911.2898). It is found that the property of Fermi liquid is rigid under perturbation of dipole coupling, and the Fermi momentum is linearly shifted. A gap is dynamically generated as the coupling becomes large enough and the Fermi surface ceases to exist as the bulk dipole coupling further increases.
Thermal radiation of electrically charged fermions from rotating black hole with electric and magnetic charges in de Sitter space is considered. The tunnelling probabilities for outgoing and incoming particles are obtained and the Hawking temperature is calculated. The relation for the classical action for the particles in the black hole's background is also found.
A Fermi ball is a kind of non-topological soliton, which is thought to arise from the spontaneous breaking of an approximate $Z_2$ symmetry and to contribute to cold dark matter. We consider a simple model in which fermion fields with multi-flavors are coupled to a scalar field through Yukawa coupling, and examine how the number of the fermion flavors affects the stability of the Fermi ball against the fragmentation. (1)We find that the Fermi ball is stable against the fragmentation in most cases even in the lowest order thin-wall approximation. (2)We then find that in the other specific cases…
We present cross-sections for the black hole and string ball production in proton-proton collisions in a TeV-scale gravity model with split fermions in two dimensions. The cross-section for black hole and string ball production in the split-fermion model is smaller than in the non-split-fermion model. The drop of the cross-section for the string ball production can be one to two orders of magnitude with the increase of the width of the brane from $L=0$ to 15 $\text{TeV}^{-1}$. The cross-section for string ball production in two-dimensional split fermion model reduces more in comparison to blac…
We propose a model of an electrically charged fermion as a regular localized solution of electromagnetic and spinor fields interacting with a physical vacuum, which is phenomenologically described as a logarithmic superfluid. We analytically study the asymptotic behavior of the solution, while obtaining its form by numerical methods. The solution has physically plausible properties, such as finite size, self-energy, total charge and mass. In the case of spherical symmetry, its electric field obeys the Coulomb asymptotics at large distances from its core. It is shown that the observable rest ma…
In this paper, we study gauged solutions associated to a massive vector field representing a spin-one condensate, namely the Proca field. We focus on regular spherically-symmetric solutions which we construct either using a self-interaction potential or general relativity in order to glue the solutions together. We start generating non-gravitating solutions, so-called, Proca Q-balls and charged Proca Q-balls. Then, we turn-on backreaction on the metric, allowing gravity to hold together the Proca condensate, to study the so-called Proca stars, charged Proca stars, Proca Q-stars and charged Pro…
Kerner and Mann's recent work shows that, for an uncharged and non-rotating black hole, its Hawking temperature can be exactly derived by fermions tunnelling from its horizons. In this paper, our main work is to improve the analysis to deal with charged fermion tunnelling from the general dilatonic black holes, specifically including the charged, spherically symmetric dilatonic black hole, the rotating Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion (EMDA) black hole and the rotating Kaluza-Klein (KK) black hole. As a result, the correct Hawking temperatures are well recovered by charged fermions tunnelling fr…
We consider the tunnelling of charged spin-(1/2) fermions from a Kerr-Newman black hole and demonstrate that the expected Hawking temperature is recovered. We discuss certain technical subtleties related to the obtention of this result.
We study massive charged fermionic perturbations in the background of a charged two-dimensional dilatonic black hole, and we solve the Dirac equation analytically. Then, we compute the reflection and transmission coefficients and the absorption cross section for massive charged fermionic fields, and we show that the absorption cross section vanishes at the low and high frequency limits. However, there is a range of frequencies where the absorption cross section is not null. Furthermore, we study the effect of the mass and electric charge of the fermionic field over the absorption cross section…
Driven by the landscape of garden-variety condensed matter systems, we have investigated how the dual spectral function behaves at the non-relativistic as well as relativistic fermionic fixed point by considering the probe Dirac fermion in an extremal charged dilatonic black hole with zero entropy. Although the pattern for both of the appearance of flat band and emergence of Fermi surface is qualitatively similar to that given by the probe fermion in the extremal Reissner-Nordstrom AdS black hole, we find a distinctly different low energy behavior around the Fermi surface, which can be traced …
We argue that, classically, $s$-wave electrons incident on a magnetically charged black hole are swallowed with probability one: the reflection coefficient vanishes. However, quantum effects can lead to both electromagnetic and gravitational backscattering. We show that, for the case of extremal, magnetically charged, dilatonic black holes and a single flavor of low-energy charged particles, this backscattering is described by a perturbatively computable and unitary $S$-matrix, and that the Hawking radiation in these modes is suppressed near extremality. The interesting and much more difficult…
The Dirac equation for charged and neutral fermions with anomalous magnetic moments is solved in a uniform magnetic field. We find the relativistic wave functions and energy spectra. In the non-relativistic limit the wave functions and energy spectra of charged fermions agree with the known solutions of the Schroedinger equation.
We analytically obtain a new charged Lifshtitz solution by adding a non-relativistic Maxwell field in Horava-Lifshitz gravity. The black hole exhibits an anisotropic scaling between space and time (Lifshitz scaling) in the UV limit, while in the IR limit, the Lorentz invariance is recovered. We introduce the probed Lorentz-violation fermions into the background and holographically investigate the spectral properties of the dual fermionic operator. The Lorentz-violation of fermions will enhance the peak and corresponds larger fermi momentum, which compensates the non-relativistic bulk effect of…
This work deals with charged nontopological solutions that appear in relativistic models described by a single complex scalar field in two-dimensional spacetime. We study a model which supports novel analytical configurations of the Q-ball type, that engender double exponential tails, in this sense being different from both the standard and compact Q-balls. The analytical solutions are also stable, both classically and quantum-mechanically, and the stability follows as in the case of the compact configurations.
We study charged massless fermionic perturbations in the background of $4$-dimensional linear dilaton black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with double Liouville-type potentials. We present the analytical fermionic quasinormal modes, whose Dirac equations are solved in terms of hypergeometric functions. We also discuss the stability of these black holes under the charged fermionic perturbations.
We investigate the holographic fermions in the charged Gauss-Bonnet $AdS_{d}$ black hole background with the dipole coupling between fermion and gauge field in the bulk. We show that in addition to the strength of the dipole coupling, the spacetime dimension and the higher curvature correction in the gravity background also influence the onset of the Fermi gap and the gap distance. We find that the higher curvature effect modifies the fermion spectral density and influences the value of the Fermi momentum for the appearance of the Fermi surface. There are richer physics in the boundary fermion…
By imposing the relativistic boundary term and Lorentz violating that in the dilatonic black brane with a Lifshitz like IR geometry and $AdS_4$ boundary, we study the properties of the spectral functions of the fermions. We find that in the two fixed points, there are emergent Fermi-surface structures and many properties seem to be in agreement with that of Fermi liquid. Especially, the low energy behavior exhibits a linear dispersion relation. In addition, we also find that a holographic flat band also emerges in this background of the dilatonic black brane.
We report a dynamical formation of a (Mott) gap from holographic fermions. By coupling a fermion field with dipole action to the charged dilaton black branes with a Lifshitz like IR geometry and $AdS_{4}$ boundary, we find that when the dipole interaction is large enough, spectral weight is transferred between bands, and beyond a critical dipole interaction, a gap emerges in the fermion density of states. The value of the gap becomes larger as the strength of the interaction keeps increasing.
We study Hawking radiation of charged fermions from accelerating and rotation black holes with electric and magnetic charges. We calculate the tunneling probabilities of incoming and outgoing fermionic particles and find the Hawking temperature of these black holes. We also provide an explicit expression of the classical action for the massive and massless particles in the background of these black holes.
Behaviour of Dirac fermions in the background of a charged black string penetrated by an Abelian Higgs vortex is elaborated. One finds the evidence that the system under consideration can support fermion fields acting like a superconducting cosmic string in the sence that a nontrivial Dirac fermion field can be carried by the system in question. The case of nonextremal and extremal black string vortex systems were considered. The influence of electric and Higgs charge, the winding number and the fermion mass on the fermion localization near the black string event horizon was studied. It turned…
We study the properties of the Green's functions of the fermions in the extremal charged dilatonic black hole proposed by Gubser and Rocha [Phys. Rev. D \textbf{81}, 046001 (2010)]. We find that many properties seem to be in agreement with that of Fermi liquid. Especially, the dispersion relation is linear. It is very different from that found in the extremal Reissner-Nordstr$\ddot{o}$m (RN) black hole for massless fermion, which is obviously non-Fermi liquid due to a nonlinear dispersion relation. However, for another scaling behavior of the height of $ImG_{11}$ at the maximum, the scaling ex…
We show that a quartic contact interaction between charged fermions can lead to Cooper pairing and a superconducting instability in the background of a charged asymptotically Anti-de Sitter black hole. For a massless fermion we obtain the zero mode analytically and compute the dependence of the critical temperature T_c on the charge of the fermion. The instability we find occurs at charges above a critical value, where the fermion dispersion relation near the Fermi surface is linear. The critical temperature goes to zero as the marginal Fermi liquid is approached, together with the density of …
It was recently shown that the Strong Cosmic Censorship conjecture might be violated for near-extremally-charged black holes in de Sitter space. Here, we extend our study to charged fermionic fields in the exterior of Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter black holes. We identify three families of modes; one related to the photon sphere, a second related to the de Sitter horizon and a third which dominates near extremality. We show that for near-extremally-charged black holes there is a critical fermionic charge below which Strong Cosmic Censorship may potentially be violated. Surprisingly enough, as o…
We study the properties of the Green's functions of the fermions in charged Gauss-Bonnet black hole. What we want to do is to investigate how the presence of Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α$ affects the dispersion relation, which is a characteristic of Fermi or non-Fermi liquid, as well as what properties such a system has, for instance, the Particle-hole (a)symmetry. One important result of this research is that we find for $q=1$, the behavior of this system is different from that of the Landau Fermi liquid and so the system can be candidates for holographic dual of generalized non-Fermi li…
In string theory, black holes have a minimum mass below which they transition into highly excited long and jagged strings --- ``string balls''. These are the stringy progenitors of black holes; because they are lighter, in theories of TeV-gravity, they may be more accessible to the LHC or the VLHC. They share some of the characteristics of black holes, such as large production cross sections. Furthermore, they evaporate thermally at the Hagedorn temperature and give rise to high-multiplicity events containing hard primary photons and charged leptons, which have negligible standard-model backgr…
We study the quasinormal modes of massless charged fermions in a Reissner-Nordstrom-anti-de Sitter black hole spacetime. In the probe limit, we find that the imaginary part of quasinormal frequency will become positive when the temperature of the black hole is below a critical value. This indicates an instability of the black hole occurs and a phase transition happens. In the AdS/CFT correspondence, this transition can be viewed as a superconducting phase transition and the bulk fermion is regarded as the order parameter. When the coupling of the fermions and the background electric field beco…
A detailed numerical analysis is performed to obtain the Hawking spectrum for charged, massive brane scalars and fermions on the approximate background of a brane charged rotating higher-dimensional black hole constructed in arXiv:0907.5107. We formulate the problem in terms of a "spinor-like" first order system of differential wave equations not only for fermions, but for scalars as well and integrate it numerically. Flux spectra are presented for non-zero mass, charge and rotation, confirming and extending previous results based on analytic approximations. In particular we describe an invert…
We study the holographic non-relativistic fermions in the presence of bulk dipole coupling in charged dilatonic black hole background. We explore the nontrivial effects of the bulk dipole coupling, the fermion charge as well as the dilaton field on the flat band, the Fermi surface and the emergence of the gap by investigating the spectral function of the non-relativistic fermion system. In particular, we find that the presence of the flat band in the non-relativistic case will suppress the Fermi momentum. Besides, we observe that the effect of the dipole coupling in the dilaton gravity is more…
Using the idea of the quantum inverse scattering method, we introduce the operators $\mathbf{B}(x), \mathbf{C}(x)$ and $\mathbf{\tilde{B}}(x), \mathbf{\tilde{C}}(x)$ corresponding to the off-diagonal entries of the monodromy matrix $T$ for the phase model and $i$-boson model in terms of bc fermions and neutral fermions respectively, thus giving alternative treatment of the KP and BKP hierarchies. We also introduce analogous operators $\mathbf{B}^{*}(x)$ and $\mathbf{C}^{*}(x)$ for the charged free boson system and show that they are in complete analogy to those of $bc$ fermionic fields. It is …
