At the low energy regime, the decay rate of two-dimensional massless Dirac fermions due to interactions can be written as $\mathrm{Im}Σ(ω) \propto |ω|^{x}$ at zero temperature. We find that the fermion system has: I) no sharp Fermi surface and no well-defined quasiparticle peak for $0<x<1/2$; II) a sharp Fermi surface but no well-defined quasiparticle peak for $1/2\leq x\leq 1$; III) both sharp Fermi surface and well-defined quasiparticle peak for $x>1$. In the presence of long-range gauge/Coulomb interaction or certain massless boson mode, the system exhibits unusual behavior belonging to class II.
We study the unconventional behavior of massless Dirac fermions due to interaction with a U(1) gauge field in two spatial dimensions. At zero chemical potential, the longitudinal and transverse components of gauge interaction are both long-ranged. There is no fermion velocity renormalization since the system respects Lorentz invariance. At finite chemical potential, the Lorentz invariance is explicitly broken by the finite Fermi surface. The longitudinal gauge interaction is statically screened and becomes unimportant, whereas the transverse gauge interaction remains long-ranged and leads to s…
The topological properties of fermions arise from their low-energy Dirac-like band dispersion and associated chiralities. Initially confined to points, extensions of the Dirac dispersion to lines and even loops have now been uncovered and semimetals hosting such features have been identified. However, experimental evidence for the enhanced correlation effects predicted to occur in these topological semimetals has been lacking. Here, we report a quantum oscillation study of the nodal loop semimetal ZrSiS in high magnetic fields that reveals significant enhancement in the effective mass of the q…
Ubiquity of unconventional phenomena observed in a series of heavy fermion metals is discussed on the basis of an idea of critical valence fluctuations. After surveying experimental aspects of these unconventional behaviors in prototypical compounds, CeCu_2(Si,Ge)_2, under pressure, we propose that sharp valence crossover phenomena are realized in CeCu_6, CeRhIn_5, and Ce(Ir,Rh)Si_3 by tuning the pressure and the magnetic field simultaneously, on the basis of previous results for an extended Anderson lattice model with the Coulomb repulsion U_fc between localized f-electron and itinerant condu…
We respond to the comment arXiv:1809.03931 put forward by Li-Han Chen, Zhen Liu, and Jian-Tin Zheng on our work Kiesel, Platt, and Thomale, Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 126405 (2013). All misunderstandings and misconceptions communicated in the comment are addressed in light of the status quo of functional renormalization group.
A general and beautiful picture for the realization of topological insulators is that the mass term of the Dirac model has a nodal surface wrapping one Dirac point. We show that this geometric picture based on Dirac points can be generalized to extended band degeneracies with nontrivial topological charges. As the nontrivial topological charges force the extended band degeneracies to be created or annihilated in pairs, when the nodal surface of mass wraps one such extended band degeneracy, the resulting gapped phase must be topologically nontrivial since it cannot adiabatically be deformed int…
We study the competition between unconventional superconducting pairing and charge density wave (CDW) formation for the two-dimensional Edwards Hamiltonian at half filling, a very general two-dimensional transport model in which fermionic charge carriers couple to a correlated background medium. Using the projective renormalization method we find that a strong renormalization of the original fermionic band causes a new hole-like Fermi surface to emerge near the center of the Brillouin zone, before it eventually gives rise to the formation of a charge density wave. On the new, disconnected part…
It is shown that certain fractionally-charged quasiparticles can be modeled on \(D-\)dimensional lattices in terms of unconventional yet simple Fock algebras of creation and annihilation operators. These unconventional Fock algebras are derived from the usual fermionic algebra by taking roots (the square root, cubic root, etc.) of the usual fermionic creation and annihilation operators. If the fermions carry non-Abelian charges, then this approach fractionalizes the Abelian charges only. In particular, the \(m\)th-root of a spinful fermion carries charge \(e/m\) and spin \(1/2\). Just like tak…
We study the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity of interacting two-dimensional metallic systems. We perform a numerical simulation of the nonequilibrium state based on semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory. Through our simulation, we demonstrate that deviations from the predictions of standard Fermi-liquid theory can arise due to the special scattering geometry of umklapp processes, in special cases even in the ultra-low-temperature limit. Umklapp scattering is required to relax the total momentum of the quasiparticle distribution function. We investigate the transport pro…
We investigate the competing Fermi surface instabilities in the Kagome tight-binding model. Specifically, we consider onsite and short-range Hubbard interactions in the vicinity of van Hove filling of the dispersive Kagome bands where the Fermiology promotes the joint effect of enlarged density of states and nesting. The sublattice interference mechanism [Kiesel and Thomale, Phys. Rev. B Rapid Comm., in press.] allows us to explain the intricate interplay between ferromagnetic fluctuations and other ordering tendencies. On the basis of functional renormalization group used to obtain an adequat…
In the recent letter [1] by H. Ikeda and Y. Ohashi, a new, very attractive idea is proposed for the explanation of the micromagnetism in U-based heavy fermion compounds. For this sake a nontrivial spin density wave (d-SDW) is introduced. Our goal is to claim, that in the model considered, the mean-field analysis is incomplete: the ferromagnetic state missed by [1] overcomes d-SDW in a large region of the phase diagram (Fig.1 in [1]).
In quantum field theory, we learn that fermions come in three varieties: Majorana, Weyl, and Dirac. Here we show that in solid state systems this classification is incomplete and find several additional types of crystal symmetry-protected free fermionic excitations . We exhaustively classify linear and quadratic 3-, 6- and 8- band crossings stabilized by space group symmetries in solid state systems with spin-orbit coupling and time-reversal symmetry. Several distinct types of fermions arise, differentiated by their degeneracies at and along high symmetry points, lines, and surfaces. Some nota…
We provide a theory for the tunneling conductance $G(V)$ of Dirac Fermions on the surface of a topological insulator as measured by a spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscope tip for low bias voltages $V$. We show that $G(V)$ exhibits an unconventional dependence on the direction of magnetization of the tip and can be used to measure the magnitude of the local out-of-plane spin orientation of the Dirac Fermions on the surface. We also demonstrate that if the in-plane rotational symmetry on the surface of the topological insulator is broken by an external field, then $G(V)$ acquires a depen…
Artificial lattices have served as a platform to study the physics of unconventional superconductivity. We study semiconductor artificial graphene -- a honeycomb superlattice imposed on a semiconductor heterostructure -- which hosts the Dirac physics of graphene but with a tunable periodic potential strength and lattice spacing, allowing control of the strength of the electron-electron interactions. We demonstrate a new mechanism for superconductivity due to repulsive interactions which requires a strong lattice potential and a minimum doping away from the Dirac points. The mechanism relies on…
We propose a novel spin density wave (SDW) state as a possible mechanism of the anomalous antiferromagnetism, so-called the micromagnetism, in URu_2Si_2 below 17.5[K]. In this new SDW, the electron-hole pair amplitude changes its sign in the momentum space as in the case of the unconventional superconductivity. It is shown that this state can be realized in an extended Hubbard model within the mean field theory. We also examine some characteristic properties of this SDW to compare with the experimental results. All these properties well explain the unsolved problem of the micromagnetism.
I study an Extended Periodic Anderson Model (EPAM) with non-local hybridisation, $V_{fc}$, and a coulomb interaction, $U_{fc}$, between localised $f$ electrons and wide band conduction ($c$) electrons. Within DMFT, a quantum phase transition (QPT) driven by soft $f$-valence fluctuations, accompanied by a discontinuous jump in the Fermi volume, is found as $V_{fc}$ is tuned across a critical value. Near the associated QCP, an unconventional superconductive instability, driven by these extended, singular valence fluctuations, naturally emerges. {\it All} these phenomena are representative of obs…
A theory for treating the unconventional non-Fermi liquid temperature dependence of physical quantities, such as the resistivity, in the Pr-based two-channel Anderson impurities system is developed. It is shown that their temperature dependences are essentially the same as those in the pure lattice system except for the case of extremely low concentration of Pr ions that is difficult to realize by a controlled experiments. This result is consistent with recent observations in diluted Pr-1-2-20 system Y$_{1-x}$Pr$_x$Ir$_2$Zn$_{20}$ ($x=0.024,\,0.044,\,0.085,$ and $0.44$) reported in Yamane $et\…
The classic composite fermion field theory (Ref. 1) builds up an excellent framework to uniformly study important physical objects and globally explain anomalous experimental phenomena in fractional quantum Hall physics while there are also inherent weaknesses. We present a nonperturbative emergent Dirac fermion theory from this strongly correlated composite fermion field theory, which overcomes these serious long-standing shortcomings. The particle-hole symmetry of Dirac equation resolves this particle-hole symmetry enigma in the composite fermion field theory. With the help of presented nume…
In quantum materials, electrons that have strong correlations tend to localize, leading to quantum spins as the building blocks for low-energy physics. When strongly correlated electrons coexist with more weakly-correlated conduction electrons, multiple channels of effective interactions develop and compete with each other. The competition creates quantum fluctuations having a large spectral weight, with the associated entropies reaching significant fractions of $R\ln 2$ per electron. Advancing a framework to understand how the fluctuating local moments influence unconventional superconductivi…
Insulators occur in more than one guise, a recent finding was a class of topological insulators, which host a conducting surface juxtaposed with an insulating bulk. Here we report the observation of an unusual insulating state with an electrically insulating bulk that simultaneously yields bulk quantum oscillations with characteristics of an unconventional Fermi liquid. We present quantum oscillation measurements of magnetic torque in high purity single crystals of the Kondo insulator SmB6, which reveal quantum oscillation frequencies characteristic of a large three-dimensional conduction elec…
Unconventional fermions with high degeneracies in three dimensions beyond Weyl and Dirac fermions have sparked tremendous interest in condensed matter physics. Here, we study quantum Hall effects (QHEs) in a two-dimensional (2D) unconventional fermion system with a pair of gapped spin-1 fermions. We find that the original unlimited number of zero energy Landau levels (LLs) in the gapless case develop into a series of bands, leading to a novel QHE phenomenon that the Hall conductance first decreases (or increases) to zero and then revives as an infinite ladder of fine staircase when the Fermi s…
Microscopic models for heavy-fermion materials often assume a local, i.e., momentum-independent, hybridization between the conduction band and the local-moment f electrons. Motivated by recent experiments, we consider situations where this neglect of momentum dependence is inappropriate, namely when the hybridization function has nodes in momentum space. We explore the thermodynamic and optical properties of the highly anisotropic heavy Fermi liquid, resulting from Kondo screening in a higher angular-momentum channel. The dichotomy in momentum space has interesting consequences: While e.g. the…
We review magnetic, superconducting and non-Fermi-liquid properties of the structurally layered heavy-fermion compounds Ce$_n$M$_m$In$_{3n+2m}$ (M=Co, Rh, Ir). These properties suggest d-wave superconductivity and proximity to an antiferromagetic quantum-critical point.
This is a comment on Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 110}, 126405 (2013), showing it biases the ferromagnetic order more than mean field theories would do. With over-biases like this, the theoretical method applied in the given context is called into question.
A phase transition into the condensed state of fermions hybridized with immobile bosons is examined beyond the ordinary mean-field approximation (MFA) in two and three dimensions. The hybridization interaction does not provide the Cooper pairing of fermions and the Bose-condensation in two-dimensions. In the three-dimensional (3D) boson-fermion model (BFM) an expansion in the strength of the order parameter near the transition yields no linear homogeneous term in the Ginzburg-Landau-Gor'kov equation. This indicates that previous mean-field discussions of the model are flawed in any dimensions.…
We review the studies on the emergent phases of superconductvity and magnetism in the $f$-electron derived heavy-fermion (HF) systems by means of the nuclear-quadrupole-resonance (NQR) under pressure. These studies have unraveled a rich variety of the phenomena in the ground state of HF systems. In this article, we highlight the novel phase diagrams of magnetism and unconventional superconductivity (SC) in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$, HF antiferromagnets CeRhIn$_5$, and CeIn$_3$. A new light is shed on the difference and common features on the interplay between magnetism and SC on the magnetic criticality.
Flat electronic bands can accommodate a plethora of interaction driven quantum phases, since kinetic energy is quenched therein and electronic interactions therefore prevail. Twisted bilayer graphene, near so-called the "magic angles", features \emph{slow} Dirac fermions close to the charge-neutrality point that persist up to high-energies. Starting from a continuum model of slow, but strongly interacting Dirac fermions, we show that with increasing chemical doping away from the charge-neutrality point, a time-reversal symmetry breaking, valley pseudo-spin-triplet, topological $p+ip$ supercond…
At the nematic quantum critical point that exists in the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconducting dome of cuprates, the massless nodal fermions interact strongly with the quantum critical fluctuation of nematic order. We study this problem by means of renormalization group approach and show that, the fermion damping rate $\left|\mathrm{Im}Σ^R(ω)\right|$ vanishes more rapidly than the energy $ω$ and the quasiparticle residue $Z_f\rightarrow 0$ in the limit $ω\rightarrow 0$. The nodal fermions thus constitute an unconventional non-Fermi liquid that represents an even weaker violation of Fermi liquid t…
It is generally believed that the inter-edge coupling destroys the quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect along with the gap opening at the Dirac points. Using first-principles calculations, we find that the quantized edge transport persists in the presence of inter-edge coupling in Ta intercalated epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001), being a QSH insulator with the non-trivial gap of 81 meV. In this case, the band is characterized by two perfect Dirac cones with different Fermi velocities, yet only one maintains the edge state feature. We attribute such an anomalous behavior to the orbital-dependent decay…
Motivated by a scarcity of simple and analytically tractable models of superconductivity from strong repulsive interactions, we introduce a simple tight-binding lattice model of fermions with repulsive interactions that exhibits unconventional superconductivity (beyond BCS theory). The model resembles an idealized conductor-dielectric-conductor trilayer. The Cooper pair consists of electrons on opposite sides of the dielectric, which mediates the attraction. In the strong coupling limit, we use degenerate perturbation theory to show that the model reduces to a superconducting hard-core Bose-Hu…
Fermi-liquid versus non-Fermi-liquid/'strange-metal' fits to the electrical resistivity in the quantum critical magnetic regime of an unconventional superconductor
Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University(东北大学材料研究所);Institute for Quantum Materials and Technologies, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology(卡尔斯鲁厄理工学院量子材料与技术研究所);Univ. Grenoble Alpes, CEA, Grenoble INP, IRIG, PHELIQS(格勒诺布尔阿尔卑斯大学,法国原子能和替代能源委员会,格勒诺布尔国立理工学院,IRIG,PHELIQS)
We present evidence for unconventional superconducting fluctuations in a heavy-fermion compound CeNi$_2$Ge$_2$. The temperature dependence of the $^{73}$Ge nuclear-spin-lattice-relaxation rate $1/T_1$ indicates the development of magnetic correlations and the formation of a Fermi-liquid state at temperatures lower than $T_{\rm FL}=0.4$ K, where $1/T_1T$ is constant. The resistance and $1/T_1T$ measured on an as-grown sample decrease below $T_{\rm c}^{\rm onset} = 0.2$ K and $T_{\rm c}^{\rm NQR} = 0.1$ K, respectively; these are indicative of the onset of superconductivity. However, after annea…
Field-angle dependent specific heat measurement has been done on the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 down to ~ 0.29 K, in a magnetic field rotating in the tetragonal c-plane. A clear fourfold angular oscillation is observed in the specific heat with the minima (maxima) occurring along the [100] ([110]) directions. Oscillation persists down to low fields H << Hc2, thus directly proving the existence of gap nodes. The results indicate that the superconducting gap symmetry is most probably of dxy type.
For a newly discovered iron-based high $T_c$ superconductor LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$, we have constructed a minimal model, where inclusion of all the five Fe $d$ bands is found to be necessary. Random-phase approximation is applied to the model to investigate the origin of superconductivity. We conclude that the multiple spin fluctuation modes arising from the nesting across the disconnected Fermi surfaces realize an extended s-wave pairing, while d-wave pairing can also be another candidate.
We consider fermions on a 2D square lattice with a finite-range pairing interaction, and obtain signatures for unconventional pair-symmetry states, $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and extended-s ($s^*$), in the BCS-BEC crossover region. We find that the fermion momentum distribution function, $v_k^2$, the ratio of the Bogoliubov coefficients, $v_k/u_k$, and the Fourier transform of $v_k^2$ are strikingly different for $d$- and $s^*$ symmetries in the crossover region. The chemical potential and the gaps functions for both pairing symmetries show several interesting features as a function of interaction. Fermion…
We study the phase diagram in a two-dimensional Fermi gas with the synthetic spin-orbit coupling that has recently been realized experimentally. In particular, we characterize in detail the properties and the stability region of the unconventional Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states in such a system, which are induced by spin-orbit coupling and Fermi surface asymmetry. We identify several distinct nodal FFLO states by studying the topology of their respective gapless contours in momentum space. We then examine the phase structure and the number density distributions in a typical har…
For nearly a century, the Stoner model has dominated research in itinerant ferromagnetism, yet recent work on ultracold, optically trapped Fermi gases suggests that phase separation of spins occurs independent of long-range magnetic order. In this paper, we consider the breakdown of the Stoner criterion in a Landau-Fermi liquid with weak non-zero gauge field. Due to a process analogous to Kohn's theory of a metal-insulator transition, we find the stability of a Fermi liquid phase in the absence of non-quasiparticle contributions to the response is strongly dependent on Landau parameters of mix…
Inspired by the recent experimental evidence of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity coexistence in heavy fermion CeRhIn$_5$, we propose a fully microscopic approach based on the idea of real space pairing within the Anderson-Kondo lattice model. We present an overall phase diagram incorporating the emergence of a quantum critical point, where Kondo insulating (KI), antiferromagnetic (AF) and superconducting (SC) phases meet. We also obtain the Kondo insulating state with totally compensated magnetic moments as the parental state for the emerging SC phases. Furthermore, the coexistent (AF+…
Non-fermi liquid and unconventional quantum critical points (QCP) with strong fractionalization are two exceptional phenomena beyond the classic condensed matter doctrines, both of which could occur in strongly interacting quantum many-body systems. This work demonstrates that using a controlled method one can construct a non-Fermi liquid within a considerable energy window based on the unique physics of unconventional QCPs. We will focus on the "nearly-marginal non-Fermi liquid", defined as a state whose fermion self-energy scales as $Σ_f(i ω) \sim i \mathrm{sgn}(ω)|ω|^α$ with $α$ close to $1…
Based on an unconventional Fermi liquid model, we present several results on the optimally doped and overdoped cuprate superconductors. For the normal state, we provide an analytic demonstration, backed by self-consistent Baym-Kadanoff (BK) numerical calculations, of the linear in $T$ resistivity and linear in 1/$ε$ optical conductivity, provided the interacting Fermi liquid has strong peaks in its density of states (van-Hove singularities in 2 dimensions) near the chemical potential $μ$. Moreover, we find that the interactions tend to pin these strong density of states peaks close to $μ$. We …
We show that in a two-dimensional electron gas with an annular Fermi surface, long-range Coulomb interactions can lead to unconventional superconductivity by the Kohn-Luttinger mechanism. Superconductivity is strongly enhanced when the inner and outer Fermi surfaces are close to each other. The most prevalent state has chiral $p$-wave symmetry, but $d$-wave and extended $s$-wave pairing are also possible. We discuss these results in the context of rhombohedral trilayer graphene, where superconductivity was recently discovered in regimes where the normal state has an annular Fermi surface. Usin…
We analyze and overview several different unconventional quantum criticalities. One origin of the unconventionality is the proximity to first-order transitions. The border between the first-order and continuous transitions is described by a quantum tricritical point (QTCP) for symmetry-breaking transitions. One of the characteristic features is the concomitant divergence of order-parameter and uniform fluctuations in contrast to the conventional quantum critical point (QCP). Several puzzling non-Fermi-liquid properties are referred to be accounted for as in the cases of YbRh2Si2, CeRu2Si2 and …
We consider the possibility of formation of an unconventional spin density wave (USDW) in quasi-one dimensional electronic systems. In analogy with unconventional superconductivity, we develop a mean field theory of SDW allowing for the momentum dependent gap $Δ({\bf k})$ on the Fermi surface. Conditions for the appearence of such a low temperature phase are investigated. The excitation spectrum and basic thermodynamic properties of the model are found to be very similar to those of d-wave superconductors in spite of the different topology of their Fermi surfaces. Several correlation functions…
Rashba spin-orbit coupling emerges in materials lacking of structural inversion symmetry, such as heterostructures, quantum wells, surface alloys and polar materials, just to mention few examples. It yields a coupling between the spin and momentum of electrons formally identical to that arising from the weakly-relativistic limit of the Dirac equation. The purpose of the present work is to give an overview of the unconventional dc transport properties of two-dimensional metals with strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling, discussing in addition the effects of thermal broadening.
The rapid experimental progress of ultra-cold dipolar fermions opens up a whole new opportunity to investigate novel many-body physics of fermions. In this article, we review theoretical studies of the Fermi liquid theory and Cooper pairing instabilities of both electric and magnetic dipolar fermionic systems from the perspective of unconventional symmetries. When the electric dipole moments are aligned by the external electric field, their interactions exhibit the explicit $d_{r^2-3z^2}$ anisotropy. The Fermi liquid properties, including the single-particle spectra, thermodynamic susceptibili…
We discover three-dimensional intertwined Weyl phases, by developing a theory to create topological phases. The theory is based on intertwining existing topological gapped and gapless phases protected by the same crystalline symmetry. The intertwined Weyl phases feature both unconventional Weyl semimetallic (monopole charge>1) and higher-order topological phases, and more importantly, their exotic intertwining. While the two phases are independently stabilized by the same symmetry, their intertwining results in the specific distribution of them in the bulk. The construction mechanism allows us…
The explanation of heavy-fermion superconductivity is a long-standing challenge to theory. It is commonly thought to be connected to non-local fluctuations of either spin or charge degrees of freedom and therefore of unconventional type. Here we present results for the Kondo-lattice model, a paradigmatic model to describe heavy-fermion compounds, obtained from dynamical mean-field theory which captures local correlation effects only. Unexpectedly, we find robust s-wave superconductivity in the heavy-fermion state. We argue that this novel type of pairing is tightly connected to the formation o…
We report measurements of the ^{115}In nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T_1) between T=0.09 K and 100 K in the new heavy fermion (HF) compound CeIrIn_5. At 0.4 K < T < 100 K, 1/T_1 is strongly T-dependent, which indicates that CeIrIn_5 is much more itinerant than known Ce-based HFs. We find that 1/T_1T, subtracting that for LaIrIn_5, follows a 1/(T+θ)^{3/4} variation with θ=8 K. We argue that this novel feature points to anisotropic, due to a layered crystal structure, spin fluctuations near a magnetic ordering. The bulk superconductivity sets in at 0.40 K below which the coherence peak…
The newly discovered topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) harbor a complex band structure involving multiple Dirac cones. These materials are potentially highly tunable by external electric field, temperature or strain and could find future applications in field-effect transistors, photodetectors, and nano-mechanical systems. Theoretically, it has been predicted that different Dirac cones, offset in energy and momentum-space, might harbor vastly different orbital character, a unique property which if experimentally realized, would present an ideal platform for accomplishing new spintronic…
Tracking unconventional superconductivity in the presence of strongly correlated Fermi arcs
Beijing National Laboratory for Condensed Matter Physics and Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences(中国科学院物理研究所);Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Materials Research Institute, The Pennsylvania State University(宾夕法尼亚州立大学材料科学与工程系及材料研究所)
We present an explanation of the unusual peak/dip/hump features observed in photoemission experiments on Bi2212 at $T \ll T_c$. We argue that these features arise from the interaction of the fermionic quasi-particles with overdamped spin fluctuations. We show that the strong spin-fermion interaction combined with the feedback effect on the spin damping due to superconductivity yields a Fermi-liquid form of the fermionic spectral function for $ω< 2 Δ$ where $Δ$ is the maximum value of the superconducting gap, and a non-Fermi-liquid form for $ω> 2 Δ$. In the Fermi-liquid regime, the spectral fun…
The extended dynamical mean field theory has played an important role in the study of quantum phase transitions in heavy fermion systems. In order to incorporate the physics of unconventional superconductivity, we develop a cluster version of the extended dynamical mean field theory. In this approach, we show how magnetic order and superconductivity develop as a result of inter-site spin exchange interactions, and analyze in some detail the form of correlation functions. We also discuss the methods that can be used to solve the dynamical equations associated with this approach. Finally, we con…
We report measurements of in-plane electrical and thermal transport properties in the limit $T \rightarrow 0$ near the unconventional quantum critical point in the heavy-fermion metal $β$-YbAlB$_4$. The high Kondo temperature $T_K$ $\simeq$ 200 K in this material allows us to probe transport extremely close to the critical point, at unusually small values of $T/T_K < 5 \times 10^{-4}$. Here we find that the Wiedemann-Franz law is obeyed at the lowest temperatures, implying that the Landau quasiparticles remain intact in the critical region. At finite temperatures we observe a non-Fermi liquid …
