This article is motivated by the authors interest in the geometry of the Mori dream space $\mathbb{P}^4$ blown up in $8$ general points. In this article we develop the necessary technique for determining Weyl orbits of linear cycles for the four-dimensional case, by explicit computations in the Chow ring of the resolution of the standard Cremona transformation. In particular, we close this paper with applications to the question of the dimension of the space global sections of effective divisors having at most $8$ base points.
A famous result of B. Crauder and S. Katz (1989) concerns the classification of special Cremona transformations whose base locus has dimension at most two. Furthermore, they also proved that a special Cremona transformation with base locus of dimension three has to be one of the following: 1) a quinto-quintic transformation of $\mathbb{P}^5$; 2) a cubo-quintic transformation of $\mathbb{P}^6$; or 3) a quadro-quintic transformation of $\mathbb{P}^8$. Special Cremona transformations as in case 1) have been classified by L. Ein and N. Shepherd-Barron (1989), while in our previous work (2013), we …
A Cremona transformation is a birational self-map of the projective space $ \mathbb{P}^{n} $. Cremona transformations of $ \mathbb{P}^{n} $ form a group and this group has a rational action on subvarieties of $ \mathbb{P}^{n} $ and hence on its Hilbert scheme. We study this action on the family of rational curves of $ \mathbb{P}^{3} $ and we prove the rectifiability of any one dimensional family. This shows that any uniruled surface is Cremona equivalent to a scroll and it answers a question of Bogomolov-Böhning related to the study of uniformly rational varieties. We provide examples of infin…
We prove more precisely the following main result of \cite{Isk1}. There is two non-conjugate embeddings of $S_3\times \ZZ_2$ into the Cremona group that is given by the linear action of this group on the plane and the action on the two-dimensional torus.
Two divisors in $\mathbb P^n$ are said to be Cremona equivalent if there is a Cremona modification sending one to the other. In this paper I study irreducible cones in $\mathbb P^n$ and prove that two cones are Cremona equivalent if their general hyperplane sections are birational. In particular I produce examples of cones in $\mathbb P^3$ Cremona equivalent to a plane whose plane section is not Cremona equivalent to a line in $\mathbb P^2$.
The Cremona group $\mathrm{Bir}(\mathbb{P}^2_\mathbb{C})$ is the group of birational self-maps of $\mathbb{P}^2_\mathbb{C}$. Using the action of $\mathrm{Bir}(\mathbb{P}^2_\mathbb{C})$ on the Picard-Manin space of $\mathbb{P}^2_\mathbb{C}$ we characterize its solvable subgroups. If $\mathrm{G}\subset\mathrm{Bir}(\mathbb{P}^2_\mathbb{C})$ is solvable, non abelian, and infinite, then up to finite index: either any element of $\mathrm{G}$ is of finite order or conjugate to an automorphism of $\mathbb{P}^2_\mathbb{C}$, or $\mathrm{G}$ preserves a unique fibration that is rational or elliptic, or $…
We deal with the following question of Dolgachev : is the Cremona group generated by involutions ? Answer is yes in dimension $2$ (Cerveau-Deserti). We give an upper bound of the minimal number $\mathfrak{n}_φ$ of involutions we need to write a birational self map $φ$ of $\mathbb{P}^2_\mathbb{C}$. We prove that de Jonquières maps of $\mathbb{P}^3_\mathbb{C}$ and maps of small bidegree of $\mathbb{P}^3_\mathbb{C}$ can be written as a composition of involutions of $\mathbb{P}^3_\mathbb{C}$ and give an upper bound of $\mathfrak{n}_φ$ for such maps $φ$. We get similar results in particular for aut…
We consider countably many three dimensional $\mathtt{PSL}_2(\mathbb{F}_7)$-del Pezzo surface fibrations over $\mathbb{P}^1$. Conjecturally they are all irrational except two families, one of which is the product of a del Pezzo surface with $\mathbb{P}^1$. We show that the other model is $\mathtt{PSL}_2(\mathbb{F}_7)$-equivariantly birational to $\mathbb{P}^2\times\mathbb{P}^1$. Based on a result of Prokhorov, we show that they are non-conjugate as subgroups of the Cremona group $\mathtt{Cr}_3(\mathbb{C})$.
We prove that a finite $3$-group in the Cremona group $\mathrm{Cr}_3(\mathbb{C})$ can be generated by at most $4$ elements. This provides the last missing piece in bounding the ranks of finite $p$-subgroups in the space Cremona group.
We identify Feigin-Odesskii brackets $q_{n,1}(C)$, associated with a normal elliptic curve of degree $n$, $C\subset {\mathbb P}^{n-1}$, with the skew-symmetric $n\times n$ matrix of quadratic forms introduced by Fisher in arXiv:1510.04327 in connection with some minimal free resolutions related to the secant varieties of $C$. On the other hand, we show that for odd $n$, the generators of the ideal of the secant variety of $C$ of codimension $3$ give a Cremona transformation of ${\mathbb P}^{n-1}$, generalizing the quadro-cubic Cremona transformation of ${\mathbb P}^4$. We identify this transfo…
This paper is concerned with suitable generalizations of a plane de Jonquières map to higher dimensional space $\mathbb{P}^n$ with $n\geq 3$. For each given point of $\mathbb{P}^n$ there is a subgroup of the entire Cremona group of dimension $n$ consisting of such maps. One studies both geometric and group-theoretical properties of this notion. In the case where $n=3$ one describes an explicit set of generators of the group and gives a homological characterization of a basic subgroup thereof.
We show that every automorphism of the group $\mathcal{G}_n:= \textrm{Aut}(\mathbb{A}^n)$ of polynomial automorphisms of complex affine $n$-space $\mathbb{A}^n=\mathbb{C}^n$ is inner up to field automorphisms when restricted to the subgroup $T \mathcal{G}_n$ of tame automorphisms. This generalizes a result of \textsc{Julie Deserti} who proved this in dimension $n=2$ where all automorphisms are tame: $T \mathcal{G}_2 = \mathcal{G}_2$.
For the subgroups of the Cremona group $\mathrm{Cr}_3(\mathbb C)$ having the form $(\boldsymbolμ_p)^s$, where $p$ is prime, we obtain an upper bound for $s$. Our bound is sharp if $p\ge 17$.
It is well known that all Borel subgroups of a linear algebraic group are conjugate. This result also holds for the automorphism group ${\mathrm{Aut}} (\mathbb A^2)$ of the affine plane \cite{BerestEshmatovEshmatov2016} (see also \cite{FurterPoloni2018}). In this paper, we describe all Borel subgroups of the complex Cremona group ${{\rm Bir}({\mathbb P}^2)}$ up to conjugation, proving in particular that they are not necessarily conjugate. More precisely, we prove that ${{\rm Bir}({\mathbb P}^2)}$ admits Borel subgroups of any rank $r \in \{ 0,1,2 \}$ and that all Borel subgroups of rank $r \in…
Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $K$ and let $N = N_G(T)$ be the normalizer of a fixed maximal torus $T\leq G$. Further, let $U$ be the unipotent radical of a fixed Borel subgroup $B$ that contains $T$ and let $U^-$ be the unipotent radical of the opposite Borel subgroup $B^-$. The Bruhat decomposition implies the decomposition $G = NU^-UN$. The Zariski closed subset $U^-U\subset G$ is isomorphic to the affine space $A_K^m$ where $m = \dim G -\dim T$ is the number of roots in the corresponding root system. Here we construct a subgroup $\mathcal{N}\leq \ope…
In the first part of this article, we answer a question of I. Dolgachev, which is related to the following problem: given a birational map $f\in\mathrm{Bir}(\mathbb{P}^m_\mathbf{k})$ and a linear projective map $A\in\mathrm{PGL}_{m+1}(\mathbf{k})$, when is $A\circ f$ regularizable? Dolgachev's initial question is whether this may happen for all $A$ in $\mathrm{PGL}_{m+1}(\mathbf{k})$, and the answer is negative. We then look at the sequence $n\mapsto\mathrm{deg}\, f^n$, $f\in\mathrm{Bir}(\mathbb{P}^2_\mathbf{k})$. We show that there is no constraint on the sequence $n\mapsto\mathrm{deg}\, f^n-…
For any $n\geq 3$, we prove that there exist equivalences between these apparently unrelated objects: irreducible $n$-dimensional non degenerate projective varieties $X\subset \mathbb P^{2n+1}$ different from rational normal scrolls and 3-covered by twisted cubic curves, up to projective equivalence; quadro-quadric Cremona transformations of $ \mathbb P^{n-1}$, up to linear equivalence; $n$-dimensional complex Jordan algebras of rank three, up to isotopy. We also provide some applications to the classification of particular classes of varieties in the class defined above and of quadro-quadric …
We study the degrees of generators of the ideal of a projected Veronese variety $v_2(\mathbb{P}^3)\subset \mathbb{P}^9$ to $\mathbb{P}^6$ depending on the center of projection. This is related to the geometry of zero dimensional schemes of length $8$ in $\mathbb{A}^4$, Cremona transforms of $\mathbb{P}^6$, and the geometry of Tonoli Calabi-Yau threefolds of degree $17$ in $\mathbb{P}^6$.
Let $X/\mathbb{P}^1$ be a Mori fibre space with general fibre of Picard rank at least two. We prove that there is a proper closed subset $S\subsetneq X$, invariant by the connected component of the identity ${\rm Aut}^{\circ}(X)$ of the automorphism group of $X$, which is moreover the orbit of a section $s$ and whose intersection with a fibre is an orbit of the subgroup of ${\rm Aut}^{\circ}(X)$ acting trivially on $\mathbb{P}^1$. Such result is a tool to describe equivariant birational maps from $X/\mathbb{P}^1$ to other Mori fibre spaces and therefore finds its applications in the study of c…
Veneroni maps are a class of birational transformations of projective spaces. This class contains the classical Cremona transformation of the plane, the cubo-cubic transformation of the space and the quatro-quartic transformation of $\mathbb{P}^4$. Their common feature is that they are determined by linear systems of forms of degree $n$ vanishing along $n+1$ general flats of codimension $2$ in $\mathbb{P}^n$. They have appeared recently in a work devoted to the so called unexpected hypersurfaces. The purpose of this work is to refresh the collective memory of the mathematical community about t…
Quadratic entry locus manifold of type $δ$ $X\subset\mathbb P^N$ of dimension $n\geq 1$ are smooth projective varieties such that the locus described on $X$ by the points spanning secant lines passing through a general point of the secant variety $SX\subseteq\mathbb P^N$ is a smooth quadric hypersurface of dimension $δ=2n+1-\dim(SX)$ equal to the secant defect of $X$. These manifolds appear widely and naturally among projective varieties having special geometric properties and/or extremal tangential behaviour. We prove that, letting $δ=2r_X +1\geq 3$ or $δ=2r_X+2$, then $2^{r_X}$ divides $n-δ$…
One of our results of this article is that every (projective) crepant resolution of a Slodowy slice in a nilpotent orbit closure in $\mathfrak{sl}_N(\mathbb{C})$ can be obtained as the restriction of some crepant resolution of the nilpotent orbit closure. We also show that there is a decomposition of the Slodowy slice into other Slodowy slices with good properties. From this decomposition, one can count the number of crepant resolutions.
The main result asserts: Let $G$ be a reductive, affine algebraic group and let $(ρ,V)$ be a regular representation of $G$. Let $X$ be an irreducible $\mathbb{C}^{ \times } G$ invariant Zariski closed subset such that $G$ has a closed orbit that has maximal dimension among all orbits (this is equivalent to: generic orbits are closed). Then there exists an open subset, $W$,of $X$ in the metric topology which is dense with complement of measure $0$ such that if $x ,y \in W$ then $\left (\mathbb{C}^{ \times } G\right )_{x}$ is conjugate to $\left (\mathbb{C}^{ \times } G\right )_{y}$. Furthermore…
We compute the $GL_{r+1}$-equivariant Chow class of the $GL_{r+1}$-orbit closure of any point $(x_1, \ldots, x_n) \in (\mathbb{P}^r)^n$ in terms of the rank polytope of the matroid represented by $x_1, \ldots, x_n \in \mathbb{P}^r$. Using these classes and generalizations involving point configurations in higher dimensional projective spaces, we define for each $d\times n$ matrix $M$ an $n$-ary operation $[M]_\hbar$ on the small equivariant quantum cohomology ring of $\mathbb{P}^r$, which is the $n$-ary quantum product when $M$ is an invertible matrix. We prove that $M \mapsto [M]_\hbar$ is a …
This paper contains the classification of the orbits of elements of the tensor product spaces ${\mathbb{F}}^2\otimes {\mathbb{F}}^3 \otimes{\mathbb{F}}^r$, $r\geq 1$, under the action of two natural groups, for all finite; real; and algebraically closed fields. For each of the orbits we determine: a canonical form; the tensor rank; the rank distribution of the contraction spaces; and a geometric description. The proof is based on the study of the contraction spaces in ${\mathrm{PG}}({\mathbb{F}}^2\otimes{\mathbb{F}}^3)$ and is geometric in nature. Although the main focus is on finite fields, t…
We identify the $G(\mathbb R)$-orbits of the real locus $X(\mathbb R)$ of any spherical complex variety $X$ defined over $\mathbb R$ and homogeneous under a split connected reductive group $G$ defined also over $\mathbb R$. This is done by introducing some reflection operators on the set of real Borel orbits of $X(\mathbb R)$. We thus investigate the existence problem for an action of the Weyl group of $G$ on the set of real Borel orbits of $X(\mathbb R)$. In particular, we determine the varieties $X$ for which these operators define an action of the very little Weyl group of $X$ on the set of…
We consider the complex ind-group $G=\mathrm{SL}(\infty,\mathbb{C})$ and its real forms $G^0=\mathrm{SU}(\infty,\infty)$, $\mathrm{SU}(p,\infty)$, $\mathrm{SL}(\infty,\mathbb{R})$, $\mathrm{SL}(\infty,\mathbb{H})$. Our main objects of study are the $G^0$-orbits on an ind-variety $G/P$ for an arbitrary splitting parabolic ind-subgroup $P\subset G$. We prove that the intersection of any $G^0$-orbit on $G/P$ with a finite-dimensional flag variety $G_n/P_n$ from a given exhaustion of $G/P$ via $G_n/P_n$ for $n\to\infty$, is a single $(G^0\cap G_n)$-orbit. We also characterize all ind-varieties $G/…
In this paper we prove the following theorem. Let $f:\mathbb{A}^2\rightarrow \mathbb{A}^2$ be a dominate polynomial endomorphisms defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $0$. If there are no nonconstant rational function $g:\mathbb{A}^2-rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1$ satisfying $g\circ f=g$, then there exists a point $p\in \mathbb{A}^2(k)$ whose orbit under $f$ is Zariski dense in $\mathbb{A}^2$. This result gives us a positive answer to a conjecture of Amerik, Bogomolov and Rovinsky ( and Zhang) for polynomial endomorphisms on the affine plane.
Using recent results of the second author which explicitly identify the "$(1,2,1,2)$-avoiding" $GL(p,\mathbb{C}) \times GL(q,\mathbb{C})$-orbit closures on the flag manifold $GL(p+q,\mathbb{C})/B$ as certain Richardson varieties, we give combinatorial criteria for determining smoothness, lci-ness, and Gorensteinness of such orbit closures. (In the case of smoothness, this gives a new proof of a theorem of W.M. McGovern.) Going a step further, we also describe a straightforward way to compute the singular locus, the non-lci locus, and the non-Gorenstein locus of any such orbit closure. We then …
Let $\mathbb{F}$ be a finite field, an algebraically closed field, or the field of real numbers. Consider the vector space $V=\mathbb{F}^3 \otimes \mathbb{F}^3$ of $3 \times 3$ matrices over $\mathbb{F}$, and let $G \leq \text{PGL}(V)$ be the setwise stabiliser of the corresponding Segre variety $S_{3,3}(\mathbb{F})$ in the projective space $\text{PG}(V)$. The $G$-orbits of lines in $\text{PG}(V)$ were determined by the first author and Sheekey as part of their classification of tensors in $\mathbb{F}^2 \otimes V$ in the article "Canonical forms of $2 \times 3 \times 3$ tensors over the real f…
This article gives a description of the diagonal $GL_3$-orbits on the quadruple projective variety $(\mathbb P^2)^4$. We give explicit representatives of orbits, and describe the closure relations of orbits. A distinguished feature of our setting is that it is the simplest case where $\mathrm{diag}(GL_n)$ has infinitely many orbits but has an open orbit in the multiple projective space $(\mathbb P^{n-1})^m$.
For $G$ a connected, reductive group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of large characteristic, we use the canonical Springer isomorphism between the nilpotent variety of $\mathfrak{g}:=\mathrm{Lie}(G)$ and the unipotent variety of $G$ to study the projective variety of elementary subalgebras of rank $r$, denoted $\mathbb{E}(r,\mathfrak{g})$. In the case that $G$ is defined over $\mathbb{F}_p$, we define the category of $\mathbb{F}_p$-expressible subalgebras of $\mathfrak{g}$, and prove that this category is isomorphic to Quillen's category of elementary abelian subgroups of the finite Ch…
Let $\mathcal{W}\subset\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$ be a surface given by the vanishing of a $(2,2,2)$-form. These surfaces admit three involutions coming from the three projections $\mathcal{W}\to\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$, so we call them $\textit{tri-involutive K3 (TIK3) surfaces}$. By analogy with the classical Markoff equation, we say that $\mathcal{W}$ is of $\textit{Markoff type (MK3)}$ if it is symmetric in its three coordinates and invariant under double sign changes. An MK3 surface admits a group of automorphisms $\mathcal{G}$ generated by the three involuti…
