Let $\mathcal{W}\subset\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$ be a surface given by the vanishing of a $(2,2,2)$-form. These surfaces admit three involutions coming from the three projections $\mathcal{W}\to\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$, so we call them $\textit{tri-involutive K3 (TIK3) surfaces}$. By analogy with the classical Markoff equation, we say that $\mathcal{W}$ is of $\textit{Markoff type (MK3)}$ if it is symmetric in its three coordinates and invariant under double sign changes. An MK3 surface admits a group of automorphisms $\mathcal{G}$ generated by the three involutions, coordinate permutations, and sign changes. In this paper we study the $\mathcal{G}$-orbit structure of points on TIK3 and MK3 surfaces. Over finite fields, we study fibral connectivity and the existence of large orbits, analogous to work of Bourgain, Gamburd, Sarnak and others for the classical Markoff equation. For a particular $1$-parameter family of MK3 surfaces $\mathcal{W}_k$, we compute the full $\mathcal{G}$-orbit structure of $\mathcal{W}_k(\mathbb{F}_p)$ for all primes $p\le113$, and we use this data as a guide to find many finite $\mathcal{G}$-orbits in $\mathcal{W}_k(\mathbb{C})$, including a family of orbits of size $288$ parameterized by a curve of genus $9$.
A case study of arithmetic dynamics over the rationals on the Markoff surface is presented, in particular the local-global dynamical property of strong residual periodicity. The dynamical system induced by the composition of any two of the reflections from the three special points at infinity on the Markoff surface is shown to be strongly residually periodic. This residual periodicity is explained by the existence of periodic conic sections of the Markoff surface with no rational points. It is also proven that cutting these conic sections from the surface eliminates strong residual periodicity…
We study the integral Hasse principle for affine varieties of the form ax^2+y^2+z^2-xyz=m ,using Brauer-Manin obstruction, and we produce examples whose Brauer groups include 4-torsion elements .We will construct their explicit representatives and compute local invariants in special places.
We study the surface $\mathcal{W}_k : x^2 + y^2 + z^2 + x^2 y^2 z^2 = k x y z$ in $(\mathbb{P}^1)^3$, a tri-involutive K3 (TIK3) surface. We explain a phenomenon noticed by Fuchs, Litman, Silverman, and Tran: over a finite field of order $\equiv 1$ mod $8$, the points of $\mathcal{W}_4$ do not form a single large orbit under the group $Γ$ generated by the three involutions fixing two variables and a few other obvious symmetries, but rather admit a partition into two $Γ$-invariant subsets of roughly equal size. The phenomenon is traced to an explicit double cover of the surface.
Ghosh and Sarnak have studied integral points on surfaces defined by an equation x^2+y^2+z^2-xyz= m over the integers. For these affine surfaces, we systematically study the Brauer group and the Brauer-Manin obstruction to the integral Hasse principle. We prove that strong approximation for integral points on any such surface, away from any finite set of places, fails, and that, for m\neq 0, 4, the Brauer group does not control strong approximation.
We begin an investigation of the action of pseudo-Anosov elements of $\mathrm{Out}(\mathbf{F}_{2})$ on the Markoff-type varieties \[ \mathbb{X}_κ:\:x^{2}+y^{2}+z^{2}=xyz+2+κ\] over finite fields $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ with $p$ prime. We first make a precise conjecture about the permutation group generated by $\mathrm{Out}(\mathbf{F}_{2})$ on $\mathbb{X}_{-2}(\mathbb{F}_{p})$ that shows there is no obstruction at the level of the permutation group to a pseudo-Anosov acting `generically'. We prove that this conjecture is sharp. We show that for a fixed pseudo-Anosov $g\in\mathrm{Out}(\mathbf{F}_{2})$,…
We study finite orbits for non-elementary groups of automorphisms of compact projective surfaces. In particular we prove that if the surface and the group are defined over a number field k and the group contains parabolic elements, then the set of finite orbits is not Zariski dense, except in certain very rigid situations, known as Kummer examples. Related results are also established when k=C. An application is given to the description of "canonical vector heights" associated to such automorphism groups.
Let $f \colon X \to X$ be a surjective endomorphism of a normal projective surface. When $\operatorname{deg} f \geq 2$, applying an (iteration of) $f$-equivariant minimal model program (EMMP), we determine the geometric structure of $X$. Using this, we extend the second author's result to singular surfaces to the extent that either $X$ has an $f$-invariant non-constant rational function, or $f$ has infinitely many Zariski-dense forward orbits; this result is also extended to Adelic topology (which is finer than Zariski topology).
We realize the Apollonian group associated to an integral Apollonian circle packings, and some of its generalizations, as a group of automorphisms of an algebraic surface. Borrowing some results in the theory of orbit counting, we study the asymptotic of the growth of degrees of elements in the orbit of a curve on an algebraic surface with respect to a geometrically finite group of its automorphisms.
The aim of this paper is to construct many examples of rational surface automorphisms with positive entropy by means of the concept of orbit data. We show that if an orbit data satisfies some mild conditions, then there exists an automorphism realizing the orbit data. Applying this result, we describe the set of entropy values of the rational surface automorphisms in terms of Weyl groups.
We study moduli spaces of lattice-polarized K3 surfaces in terms of orbits of representations of algebraic groups. In particular, over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, we show that in many cases, the nondegenerate orbits of a representation are in bijection with K3 surfaces (up to suitable equivalence) whose Néron-Severi lattice contains a given lattice. An immediate consequence is that the corresponding moduli spaces of these lattice-polarized K3 surfaces are all unirational. Our constructions also produce many fixed-point-free automorphisms of positive entropy on K3 surface…
Translation surfaces can be defined in an elementary way via polygons, and arise naturally in in the study of various basic dynamical systems. They can also be defined as Abelian differentials on Riemann surfaces, and have moduli spaces called strata that are related to the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. There is a GL(2,R) action on each stratum, and to solve most problems about a translation surface one must first know the closure of its orbit under this action. Furthermore, these orbit closures are of fundamental interest in their own right, and are now known to be algebraic varieties tha…
Given two elements of a vector space acted on by a reductive group, we ask whether they lie in the same orbit, and if not, whether one lies in the orbit closure of the other. We develop techniques to optimize the orbit and orbit closure algorithms and apply these to give a partial classification of orbit closure containments in the case of cubic surfaces with infinitely many singular points, which are known to fall into 13 normal forms. We also discuss the computational obstructions to completing this classification, and discuss tools for future work in this direction.
The projective linear group \(\pgl(\comp,4)\) acts on cubic surfaces, considered as points of $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}}^{19}$. We compute the degree of the $15$-dimensional projective variety given by the Zariski closure of the orbit of a general cubic surface. The result, 96120, is obtained using methods from numerical algebraic geometry.
Let $Σ_{g,n}$ be the orientable genus $g$ surface with $n$ punctures, where $2-2g-n<0$. Let $$ρ: π_1(Σ_{g,n})\to GL_m(\mathbb{C})$$ be a representation. Suppose that for each finite covering map $f: Σ_{g', n'}\to Σ_{g, n}$, the orbit of (the isomorphism class of) $f^*(ρ)$ under the mapping class group $MCG(Σ_{g',n'})$ of $Σ_{g',n'}$ is finite. Then we show that $ρ$ has finite image. The result is motivated by the Grothendieck-Katz $p$-curvature conjecture, and gives a reformulation of the $p$-curvature conjecture in terms of isomonodromy.
We construct orbits of the absolute Galois group, of explicit unbounded size, consisting of surfaces with mutually non-isomorphic fundamental groups. These are Beauville surfaces with Beauville group PGL_2(p).
We classify the orbits of solids in the projective space $\text{PG}(5,q)$, $q$ even, under the setwise stabiliser $K \cong \text{PGL}(3,q)$ of the Veronese surface. For each orbit, we provide an explicit representative $S$ and determine two combinatorial invariants: the point-orbit distribution and the hyperplane-orbit distribution. These invariants characterise the orbits except in two specific cases (in which the orbits are distinguished by their line-orbit distributions). In addition, we determine the stabiliser of $S$ in $K$, thereby obtaining the size of each orbit. As a consequence, we o…
