The transverse thermoelectric effect refers to the conversion of a temperature gradient into a transverse charge current, or vice versa, which appears in a conductor under a magnetic field or in a magnetic material with spontaneous magnetization. Among such phenomena, the anomalous Nernst effect in magnetic materials has been receiving increased attention from the viewpoints of fundamental physics and thermoelectric applications owing to the rapid development of spin caloritronics and topological materials science. In this research trend, a conceptually different transverse thermoelectric conversion phenomenon appearing in thermoelectric/magnetic hybrid materials has been demonstrated, enabling the generation of a large transverse thermopower. Here, we review the recent progress in fundamental and applied studies on the transverse thermoelectric generation using magnetic materials. We anticipate that this perspective will further stimulate research activities on the transverse thermoelectric generation and lead to the development of next-generation thermal energy harvesting and heat-flux sensing technologies.
Transverse thermoelectric generation using magnetic materials is essential to develop active thermal engineering technologies, for which the improvements of not only the thermoelectric output but also applicability and versatility are required. In this study, using combinatorial material science and lock-in thermography technique, we have systematically investigated the transverse thermoelectric performance of Sm-Co-based alloy films. The high-throughput material investigation revealed the best Sm-Co-based alloys with the large anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) as well as the anomalous Ettingshaus…
To achieve thermoelectric energy conversion, a large transverse thermoelectric effect in topological materials is crucial. However, the general relationship between topological electronic structures and transverse thermoelectric effect remains unclear, restricting the rational design of novel transverse thermoelectric materials. Herein, we demonstrate a topological transition-induced giant transverse thermoelectric effect in polycrystalline Mn-doped Mg3+δBi2 material, which has a competitively large transverse thermopower (617 uV/K), power factor (20393 uWm-1K-2), magnetoresistance (16600%), a…
We phenomenologically calculate the performance of the recently-observed Seebeck-driven transverse thermoelectric generation (STTG) for various systems in terms of the thermopower, power factor, and figure of merit to demonstrate the usefulness of STTG. The STTG system consists of a closed circuit comprising thermoelectric and magnetic materials which exhibit the Seebeck and anomalous Hall effects, respectively. When a temperature gradient is applied to the hybrid system, the Seebeck effect in the thermoelectric material layer generates a longitudinal charge current in the closed circuit and t…
Whereas thermoelectric performance is normally limited by the figure of merit ZT, transverse thermoelectrics can achieve arbitrarily large temperature differences in a single leg even with inferior ZT by being geometrically tapered. We introduce a band-engineered transverse thermoelectric with p-type Seebeck in one direction and n-type orthogonal, resulting in off-diagonal terms that drive heat flow transverse to electrical current. Such materials are advantageous for microscale devices and cryogenic temperatures -- exactly the regimes where standard longitudinal thermoelectrics fail. InAs/GaS…
In this article, we show fundamentals and recent advances on the transverse thermoelectric generation, in which a thermopower is generated in the direction perpendicular to an applied temperature gradient. Transverse thermoelectric generation is one of the central topics in condensed matter physics, and can be a breakthrough approach to solve long-standing technological problems with contact resistances in thermoelectric generators. We review here the six currently known driving mechanisms: the ordinary Nernst effect, the anomalous Nernst effect, goniopolar materials, the spin Seebeck effect, …
The tremendous amount of wasted heat from solar radiation and industry dissipation has motivated the development of thermoelectric concepts that directly convert heat into electricity. The main challenge in practical applications for thermoelectrics is the high cost from both materials and manufacturing. Recently, breakthrough progresses in ionic thermoelectrics open up new possibilities to charge energy storage devices when submitted to a temperature gradient. The charging voltage is internally from the ionic Seebeck effect of the electrolyte between two electrodes. Hence electrolytes with hi…
The Seebeck-driven transverse thermoelectric generation in magnetic/thermoelectric hybrid materials (STTG) has been investigated in all-bulk hybrid materials. The transverse thermopower in a ferromagnetic Co$_2$MnGa/thermoelectric $n$-type Si hybrid bulk material with the adjusted dimensions reaches 16.0 $μ$V/K at room temperature with the aid of the STTG contribution, which is much larger than the anomalous Nernst coefficient of the Co$_2$MnGa slab (6.8 $μ$V/K). Although this transverse thermopower is smaller than the value for previously reported thin-film-based hybrid materials, the hybrid …
Transverse thermoelectric devices consist of only one thermoelectric material, unlike conventional longitudinal thermoelectric devices that require two types of thermoelectric materials with p- and n-type polarities. However, scalable synthesis of materials that demonstrate axis-dependent carrier polarity, which is a prospective component to demonstrate the transverse thermoelectric device, is challenging. This paper reports that polycrystalline NaSn$_2$As$_2$, which was prepared by using uniaxial hot pressing, displayed axis-dependent carrier polarity. The preferred orientation of the sample …
Kagome metal TbMn6Sn6 was recently discovered to be a ferrimagnetic topological Dirac material by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy measurements. Here, we report the observation of large anomalous Nernst effect and anomalous thermal Hall effect in this compound. The anomalous transverse transport is consistent with the Berry curvature contribution from the massive Dirac gaps in the 3D momentum space as demonstrated by our first-principles calculations. Furthermore, the transverse thermoelectric transport exhibits asymmetry with respect to the applied magnetic field, i.e., an exchange-…
An unconventional approach to enhance the transverse thermopower by combining magnetic and thermoelectric materials, namely the Seebeck-driven transverse thermoelectric generation (STTG), has been proposed and demonstrated recently. Here, we improve on the previously used sample structure and achieve large transverse thermopower over 40 $μ$V K$^{-1}$ due to STTG in on-chip devices. We deposited polycrystalline Fe-Ga alloy films directly on n-type Si substrates, where Fe-Ga and Si serve as the magnetic and thermoelectric materials, respectively. Using microfabrication, contact holes were create…

Transverse thermoelectric effects in response to an out-of-plane heat current have been studied in an external magnetic field for ferromagnetic superlattices consisting of La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 and SrRuO3 layers. The superlattices were fabricated on SrTiO3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition. We found that the sign of the transverse thermoelectric voltage for the superlattices is opposite to that for La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 and SrRuO3 single layers at 200 K, implying an important role of spin Seebeck effects inside the superlattices. At 10 K, the magnetothermoelectric curves shift from the zero field du…
We report the results of our experimental studies on the magnetic, transport and thermoelectric properties of the ferromagnetic metal CoMnSb. Sizable anomalous Hall conductivity $σ_{yx}$ and transverse thermoelectric conductivity $α_{yx}$ are found experimentally and comparable in size to the values estimated from density-functional theory. Our experiment further reveals that CoMnSb exhibits $-T\ln T$ critical behavior in $α_{yx}(T)$, deviating from Fermi liquid behavior $α_{yx}\sim T$ over a decade of temperature between 10 K to 400 K, similar to ferromagnetic Weyl and nodal-line semimetals. …
To assess the potential of polycrystalline MnBi as a transverse thermoelectric material, we have experimentally investigated its anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) by means of the heat flux method. We prepared MnBi samples by powder metallurgy; this technique allows the preparation of samples in arbitrary shapes with the possibility to tailor their magnetic properties. In the material exhibiting the highest remanent magnetization, we found a value of the ANE thermopower of -1.1 $μ$V/K at 1 T, after the compensation of the ordinary Nernst effect from pure bismuth present inside the polycrystalline s…
This study focuses on the potential of permanent magnets as thermoelectric converters. It is found that a SmCo$_5$-type magnet exhibits the large anomalous Ettingshausen effect (AEE) at room temperature and that its charge-to-heat current conversion coefficient is more than one order of magnitude greater than that of typical ferromagnetic metals. The large AEE is an exclusive feature of the SmCo$_5$-type magnet among various permanent magnets in practical use, which is independent of the conventional performance of magnets based on static magnetic properties. The experimental results show that…
A numerical study of thermoelectric nanocomposites is presented. Thermoelectric properties as a function of average grain size or nanoparticle density are examined by simulating the measurements as they would be done experimentally. In accordance with previous theory and experimental results, we find that the Seebeck coefficient, power factor and figure of merit, zT, can be increased by nanostructuring when energy barriers exist around the grain boundaries or embedded nanoparticles. When we simulate the performance of a thermoelectric cooler with the same material, however, we find that the ma…

As the energy problem becomes more prominent, researches on thermoelectric (TE) materials have deepened over the past few decades. Low thermal conductivity enables thermoelectric materials better thermal conversion performance. In this study, based on the first principles and phonon Boltzmann transport equation, we studied the thermal conductivities of single-layer WSe2 under several defect conditions using density functional theory (DFT) as implemented in the Vienna Ab-initio Simulation Package (VASP). The lattice thermal conductivities of WSe2 under six kinds of defect states, i.e., PS, SS-c…
The conventional thermoelectric figure of merit and the power factor are not sufficient as a measure of thin film quality of thermoelectric materials, where the power conversion efficiency depends on the film dimensions. By considering the film size, the effective thermoelectric figure of merit and effective Seebeck coefficient are introduced to guarantee that the maximum energy conversion efficiency increases as the effective thermoelectric figure of merit increases. Similarly, the effective power factor is defined. By introducing typical material properties for Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and PEDOT, we stu…
Chemical doping is one of the most important strategies for tuning electrical properties of semiconductors, particularly thermoelectric materials. Generally, the main role of chemical doping lies in optimizing the carrier concentration, but there can potentially be other important effects. Here, we show that chemical doping plays multiple roles for both electron and phonon transport properties in half-Heusler thermoelectric materials. With ZrNiSn-based half-Heusler materials as an example, we use high-quality single and polycrystalline crystals, various probes, including electrical transport m…
The thermoelectric figure of merit ZT, which is defined using electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, thermal conductivity, and absolute temperature T, has been widely used as a simple estimator of the conversion efficiency of a thermoelectric heat engine. When material properties are constant or slowly varying with T, a higher ZT ensures a higher maximum conversion efficiency of thermoelectric materials. However, as material properties can vary strongly with T, efficiency predictions based on ZT can be inaccurate, especially for wide-temperature applications. Moreover, although ZT value…
Topological semimetals provide new opportunities for exploring new thermoelectric phenomena, because of their exotic and nontrivial electronic structure topology around the Fermi surface. In this study, we report on the discovery of giant transverse and longitudinal magneto-thermoelectric (MTE) effects in Mg3Bi2, which is predicted to be a type-II nodal-line semimetal in the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The maximum transverse power factor is 2182 μWm^{-1}K^{-2} at 13.5 K and 6 Tesla. The longitudinal power factor reaches up to 3043μWm^{-1}K^{-2} at 15 K and 13 Tesla, which is 20 times…

The paper deals with thermoelectric figure of merit of the superlattice materials. It is shown, that two-dimensional character of band spectrum of thermoelectric material may increase the power factor, but not the thermoelectric figure of merit.
Topological insulators (TIs) are a new quantum state of matter which have gapless surface states inside the bulk energy gap. Starting with the discovery of two dimensional TIs, the HgTe-based quantum wells, many new topological materials have been theoretically predicted and experimentally observed. Currently known TI materials can possibly be classified into two families, the HgTe family and the Bi2Se family. The signatures found in the electronic structure of a TI also cause these materials to be excellent thermoelectric materials. On the other hand, excellent thermoelectric materials can be…
We report on the elaboration of germanium manganese nanostructured thin films and the measurement of their thermoelectric properties. We investigate the growth of Ge:Mn layers along with a thorough structural characterization of this materials at the nanoscale. The room temperature thermoelectric properties of these layers containing spherical inclusions are discussed regarding their potential as a model of "electron crystal phonon glass material". We show that the thermal conductivity can be decreased by a factor of 30, even if the electronic properties can be conserved as in the bulk. The th…

Here we show how the natural electronic anisotropy of layered conducting transition metal oxides enables the generation of intense terahertz radiation via the transverse thermoelectric effect. In thin films grown on offcut substrates, femtosecond l…

Here we present a general first-principles approach to predict, in multicomponent systems, efficient thermoelectric compounds. The method combines a robust evolutionary algorithm, a Pareto multiobjective optimization, density functional theory and a Boltzmann semi-classical calculation of thermoelectric efficiency. To test the performance and reliability of our overall framework, we use the well-known system Bi$_2$Te$_3$-Sb$_2…

Efficient thermoelectric energy conversion critically depends on the performance of thermoelectric materials and devices. In this review, we …
Thermoelectric (TE) conversion in conducting materials is of eminent importance for providing renewable energy and solid-state cooling. Although traditionally, the Seebeck effect plays a key role for the TE figure of merit zST, it encounters fundamental constraints hindering its conversion efficiency. Most notably, there are the charge compensation of electrons and holes that diminishes this effect, and the intertwinement of the corresponding electrical and thermal conductivities through the Wiedemann-Franz (WF) law which makes their independent optimization in zST impossible. Here, we demonst…
Hierarchically nanostructured materials, where disorder is introduced in various length scales (at the atomic scale, the nanoscale, and the mesoscale) is one of the most promising directions to achieve extremely low thermal conductivities and improve thermoelectric performance. Here we theoretically investigate one such system, a nanocrystalline material with nanopores that are introduced between the crystalline regions. We use the Nonequilibrium Greens Function method for electronic transport and Molecular Dynamics for phonon transport.
The high-throughput (HT) computational method is a useful tool to screen high performance functional materials. In this work, using the deformation potential method under the single band model, we evaluate the carrier relaxation time and establish an electrical descriptor (\c{hi}) characterized by the carrier effective masses based on the simple rigid band approximation. The descriptor (\c{hi}) can be used to reasonably represent the maximum power factor without solving the electron Boltzmann transport equation. Additionally, the Grüneisen parameter (γ), a descriptor of the lattice anharmonici…
p x n-type materials refer to materials with a p-type Seebeck coefficient in one direction and a n-type coefficient in the orthogonal direction. This type of materials allows for a transverse thermoelectric response, which is highly desirable for energy applications. Here, we report the observation of p x n-type behavior in TaIrTe4, a type-II Weyl semimetal, with an in-plane thermopower anisotropy S$_{xx}$-S$_{yy}$ reaches a maximum value 40$μ$V/K at 200K. Intriguingly. we found that such a p x n-type behavior is absent in the similar compound NbIrTe4. The presence and absence of p x n-type be…
A potential thermoelectric material CuAlO$_2$ is theoretically studied. We first construct a model Hamiltonian of CuAlO$_2$ based on the first principles band calculation, and calculate the Seebeck coefficient. Then, we compare the model with that of a well-known thermoelectric material Na$_x$CoO$_2$, and discuss the similarities and the differences. It is found that the two materials are similar from an electronic structure viewpoint in that they have a peculiar pudding-mold type band shape, which is advantageous as thermoelectric materials. There are however some differences, and we analyze …
To realize a thermoelectric power generator, typically a junction between two materials with different Seebeck coefficient needs to be fabricated. Such difference in Seebeck coefficients can be induced by doping, which renders difficult when working with two-dimensional (2d) materials. Here, we employ substrate effects to form a thermoelectric junction in ultra-thin few-layer MoS2 films. We investigated the junctions with a combination of scanning photocurrent microscopy and scanning thermal microscopy. This allows us to reveal that thermoelectric junctions form across the substrate-engineered…

All the studied compounds appear to be direct band gap semiconductors evaluated based on the Tran-Blaha modified Becke-Johnson potential. The heavy and light band combination found near the valence band maximum (VBM) drive these materials to possess good thermoelectric properties. Among the studied compounds, CuAlTe$_2$ is found to be more promising, in comparison with CuGaTe$_2$, which is reported to be an efficient thermoelectr…
We report novel design for thermoelectric device which can control thermoelectric properties of p-type and n-type materials simultaneously by electric double-layer gating. Here, p-type Cu2O and n-type ZnO were used as positive and negative electrodes of the electric double-layer capacitor structure. When the gate voltage was applied between two electrodes, the holes and electrons were accumulated on the surface of Cu2O and ZnO, respectively. The thermopower was measured by applying thermal gradient along the accumulated layer on the electrodes. We demonstrate here that the accumulated layers a…
A finite electronic band gap is a standard filter in high-throughput screening of materials using density functional theory (DFT). However, because of the systematic underestimation of band gaps in standard DFT approximations, a number of compounds may incorrectly be predicted metallic. In a more accurate treatment, such materials may instead appear as low band gap materials and could e.g. have good thermoelectric properties if suitable doping is feasible. To explore this possibility, we performed hybrid functional calculations on 1093 cubic materials listed in the MaterialsProjects database w…
