We explore the possibility to perform an in-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) thermoelectric characterization of materials. A differential heating element on a custom in-situ TEM microchip allows to generate a temperature gradient across the studied materials, which are simultaneously measured electrically. A thermovoltage was induced in all studied devices, whose sign corresponds to the sign of the Seebeck coefficient of the tested materials. The results indicate that in-situ thermoelectric TEM studies can help to profoundly understand fundamental aspects of thermoelectricity, which is exemplary demonstrated by tracking the thermovoltage during in-situ crystallization of an amorphous Ge thin film. We propose an improved in-situ TEM microchip design, which should facilitate a full quantitative measurement of the induced temperature gradient, the electrical and thermal conductivities, as well as the Seebeck coefficient. The benefit of the in-situ approach is the possibility to directly correlate the thermoelectric properties with the structure and chemical composition of the entire studied device down to the atomic level, including grain boundaries, dopants or crystal defects, and to trace its dynamic evolution upon heating or during the application of electrical currents
A numerical study of thermoelectric nanocomposites is presented. Thermoelectric properties as a function of average grain size or nanoparticle density are examined by simulating the measurements as they would be done experimentally. In accordance with previous theory and experimental results, we find that the Seebeck coefficient, power factor and figure of merit, zT, can be increased by nanostructuring when energy barriers exist around the grain boundaries or embedded nanoparticles. When we simulate the performance of a thermoelectric cooler with the same material, however, we find that the ma…
There is currently substantial effort being invested into creating efficient thermoelectric nanowires based on topological insulator chalcogenide-type materials. A key premise of these efforts is the assumption that the generally good thermoelectric properties that these materials exhibit in bulk form will translate into similarly good or even better thermoelectric performance of the same materials in nanowire form. Here, we calculate thermoelectric performance of topological insulator nanowires based on Bi2Te3, Sb2Te3 and Bi2Se3 as a function of diameter and Fermi level. We show that the ther…
In recent years, nanoporous thin films have been widely studied for thermoelectric applications. High thermoelectric performance is reported for nanoporous Si films, which is attributed to the dramatically reduced lattice thermal conductivity and bulk-like electrical properties. Porous materials can also be used in gas sensing applications by engineering the surface-trapped charges on pore edges. In this work, an analytical model is developed to explore the relationship between the thermoelectric properties and pore-edge charges in a periodic two-dimensional nanoporous material. The presented …
Hierarchically nanostructured materials, where disorder is introduced in various length scales (at the atomic scale, the nanoscale, and the mesoscale) is one of the most promising directions to achieve extremely low thermal conductivities and improve thermoelectric performance. Here we theoretically investigate one such system, a nanocrystalline material with nanopores that are introduced between the crystalline regions. We use the Nonequilibrium Greens Function method for electronic transport and Molecular Dynamics for phonon transport.
Silicon carbide nanoparticles with diameters around 8 nm and with narrow size distribution have been finely mixed with doped silicon nanopowders and sintered into bulk samples to investigate the influence of nanoinclusions on electrical and thermal transport properties. We have compared the thermoelectric properties of samples ranging from 0-5% volume fraction of silicon carbide. The silicon carbide nanoinclusions lead to a significant improvement in the thermoelectric figure of merit, ZT, largely due to an enhancement of the Seebeck coefficient. A semiclassical Boltzmann transport equation is…
We present the full thermoelectric characterization of nanostructured bulk PbTe and PbTe-PbSe samples fabricated from colloidal core-shell nanoparticles followed by spark plasma sintering. An unusually large thermopower is found in both materials, and the possibility of energy filtering as opposed to grain boundary scattering as an explanation is discussed. A decreased Debye temperature and an increased molar specific heat are in accordance with recent predictions for nanostructured materials. On the basis of these results we propose suitable core-shell material combinations for future thermoe…
Critical thermoelectric parameters including Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and figure of merit ZT of one-dimensional coaxial Bi2Te3/Sb2Te3 nanocomposite were modeled by following the single carrier pocket and sharp interface assumptions. A calculation scheme based on Landauer approach, instead of commonly used Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) with relaxation time approximation, was adopted to numerically obtain the transmission functions which can be used to evaluate thermoelectric properties. Considerable enhancement of ZT was obtained through our modeli…
We investigate electron and phonon transport through edge disordered zigzag graphene nanoribbons based on the same methodological tool of nonequilibrium Green functions. We show that edge disorder dramatically reduces phonon thermal transport while being only weakly detrimental to electronic conduction. The behavior of the electronic and phononic elastic mean free paths points to the possibility of realizing an electron-crystal coexisting with a phonon-glass. The calculated thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) values qualify zigzag graphene nanoribbons as a very promising material for thermoele…
The differential effective medium method (DEM) is presented from a physical viewpoint and employed to calculate the lattice thermal conductivity of nano-bulk composites comprising core-shell particles. Extended from the average-T-matrix single-particle approximation, DEM incorporates interparticle effect essential for the study of core-shell nanocomposites (CSN). Interparticle boundary scattering in addition to intraparticle boundary scattering in CSN is found to add to the reduction of thermal conductivity of nanocomposites. Thus, CSN hold the promise of improving the thermoelectric dimension…
A composite material is considered which consists of conducting nanoparticles separated by tunneling dielectric barriers. The influence of the phonon thermal conductivity of dielectric matrix on the thermoelectric figure of merit of this composite material is theoretically in-vestigated. The range of values and barrier parameters that can lead to the thermoelectric figure of merit greater than unity is estimated. The influence of space charge and nonlinearity of current-voltage relations of tunneling barrier are also discussed.
Thermoelectric device is a promising next-generation energy solution owing to its capability to transform waste heat into useful electric energy, which can be realized in materials with high elec- tric conductivities and low thermal conductivities. A recently synthesized silicon allotrope of Si$_{24}$ features highly anisotropic crystal structure with nanometre-sized regular pores. Here, based on first-principles study without any empirical parameter, we show that the slightly doped Si$_{24}$ can pro- vide an order-of-magnitude enhanced thermoelectric figure of merit at room temperature, compa…
Grain boundaries are commonly observed in carbon nanostructures, but their influence on thermal and electric properties are still not completely understood. Using a combined approach of density functional tight-binding theory and non-equilibrium Green functions we investigate electron and phonon transport in carbon based systems. In this work, quantum transport and thermoelectric properties are summarized for graphene sheets, graphene nanoribbons and carbon nanotubes with a variety of grain boundary types in a wide temperature range. Motivated by previous findings that disorder scatters phonon…
Thermoelectric properties of graphene nanoribbons with periodic edge vacancies and antidot lattice are investigated. The electron-phonon interaction is taken into account in the framework of the Hubbard-Holstein model with the use of the Lang-Firsov unitary transformation scheme. The electron transmission function, the thermopower and the thermoelectric figure of merit are calculated. We have found that the electron-phonon interaction causes a decrease in the peak values of the thermoelectric figure of merit and the shift of the peak positions closer to the center of the bandgap. The effects a…
Solid-state precipitation can be used to tailor materials properties, ranging from ferromagnets and catalysts to mechanical strengthening and energy storage. Thermoelectric properties can be modified by precipitation to enhance phonon scattering while retaining charge-carrier transmission. Here, we uncover unconventional dual Janus-type nanoprecipitates in Mg3Sb1.5Bi0.5 formed by side-by-side Bi- and Ge-rich appendages, in contrast to separate nanoprecipitate formation. These Janus nanoprecipitates result from local co-melting of Bi and Ge during sintering, enabling an amorphous-like lattice t…
p-type Ce1.05Fe4Sb12.04 filled skutterudites with much improved thermoelectric properties have been synthesized by rapidly converting nearly amorphous ribbons into crystalline pellets under pressure. It is found that this process greatly suppresses grain growth and second phase formation/segregation, and hence results in the samples consisting of nano-sized grains with strongly-coupled grain boundaries, as observed by transmission electron microscopy. The room temperature carrier mobility in these samples is significantly higher (nearly double) than those in the samples of the same starting co…
We have theoretically investigated the thermoelectric properties of impurity-doped one-dimensional semiconductors, focusing on nitrogen-substituted (N-substituted) carbon nanotubes (CNTs), using the Kubo formula combined with a self-consistent $t$-matrix approximation. N-substituted CNTs exhibit extremely high thermoelectric power factor ($PF$) values originating from a characteristic of one-dimensional materials where decrease in the carrier density increase both the electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient in the low-N regime. The chemical potential dependence of the $PF$ values o…
A new genre of Spin-Transfer Torque (STT) MRAM is proposed, in which bi-directional writing is achieved using thermoelectrically controlled magnonic current as an alternative to conventional electric current. The device uses a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ), which is adjacent to a non-magnetic metallic and a ferrite film. This film stack is heated or cooled by a Peltier element which creates a bi-directional magnonic pulse in the ferrite film. Conversion of magnons to spin current occurs at the ferrite-metal interface, and the resulting spin-transfer torque is used to achieve sub-nanosecond pr…
Half-Heusler (HH) alloys have attracted considerable interest as promising thermoelectric (TE) materials in the temperature range around 700 K and above, which is close to the temperature range of most industrial waste heat sources. The past few years have seen nanostructuing play an important role in significantly enhancing the TE performance of several HH alloys. In this article, we briefly review the recent progress and advances in these HH nanocomposites. We begin by presenting the structure of HH alloys and the different strategies that have been utilized for improving the TE properties o…
Understanding the electronic and phononic transport properties of junctions consisting of a scattering region such as a nanoscale matters or molecules connected to two or more electrodes is the central basis for future nano and molecular scale applications. The theoretical and mathematical techniques to treat electron and phonon transport are leading to model the physical properties of nano and molecular scale junctions. My aim in this paper is to review the theoretical and mathematical techniques to treat electron and phonon transport in nano and molecular scale junctions leading to models of…
Nanostructured Zinc oxide (ZnO) was synthesized via a ball milling for 10 hours using high energy planetary ball mill. Phase purity and homogeneity of all the samples have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM). All the diffraction peaks can be indexed to the hexagonal phase ZnO with hexagonal symmetry (space group P63mc). Average crystallite size was observed to be 20 nm. There was a remarkable suppression in thermal conductivity (κ) compared to the bulk values by a factor of ~50 at room temperature. This suggests to the possibili…
Introducing hierarchical disorder from multiple defects into materials through nanostructuring is one of the most promising directions to achieve extremely low thermal conductivities and thus improve thermoelectric performance. The success of nanostructuring relies on charge carriers having shorter mean-free-paths than phonons so that the latter can be selectively scattered. Nevertheless, introducing disorder into a material often comes at the expense of scattering charge carriers as well as phonons. In order to determine the tradeoff between the degradation of the lattice thermal conductivity…
The thermoelectric properties of MoS2 armchair nanoribbons with different width are studied by using first-principles calculations and Boltzmann transport theory, where the relaxation time is predicted from deformation potential theory. Due to the dangling bonds at the armchair edge, there is obvious structure reconstruction of the nanoribbons which plays an important role in governing the electronic and transport properties. The investigated armchair nanoribbons are found to be semiconducting with indirect gaps, which exhibit interesting width-dependent oscillation behavior. The smaller gap o…
An experimental setup for determining the electrical resistivity of several types of thermoelectric materials over the temperature range 20 < T < 550 C is described in detail. One resistivity measurement during temperature cycling is also explained for Cu0.01Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 while a second measurement is made on Yb0.35Co4Sb12 as a function of time at 400 C. Both measurements confirm that the materials are thermally stable for the temperature range and time period measured. Measurements made during temperature cycling show an irreversible decrease in the electrical resistivity of Cu0.01Bi2Te2.7Se0…
The mean-free-paths (MFPs) of energy carriers are of critical importance to the nano-engineering of better thermoelectric materials. Despite significant progress in the first-principles-based understanding of the spectral distribution of phonon MFPs in recent years, the spectral distribution of electron MFPs remains unclear. In this work, we compute the energy dependent electron scatterings and MFPs in silicon from first-principles. The electrical conductivity accumulation with respect to electron MFPs is compared to that of the phonon thermal conductivity accumulation to illustrate the quanti…
In the last two decades, a nanostructuring paradigm has been successfully applied in a wide range of thermoelectric materials, resulting in significant reduction in thermal conductivity and superior thermoelectric performance. These advances, however, have been accomplished without directly investigating the local thermoelectric properties, even though local electric current can be mapped with high spatial resolution. In fact, there still lacks an effective method that links the macroscopic thermoelectric performance to the local microstructures and properties. Here, we show that local thermal…
We propose a possible route to achieve high thermoelectric efficiency in molecular junctions by combining a local chemical tuning of the molecular electronic states with the use of semiconducting electrodes. The former allows to control the position of the HOMO transmission resonance with respect to the Fermi energy while the latter fulfills a twofold purpose: the suppression of electron-like contributions to the thermopower and the cut-off of the HOMO transmission tails into the semiconductor band gap. As a result a large thermopower can be obtained. Our results strongly suggest that large fi…

Low dimensional materials provide the possibility of improved thermoelectric performance due to the additional length scale degree of freedom for engineering their electronic and thermal properties. As a result of suppressed phonon conduction, large improvements on the thermoelectric figure of merit, ZT, have been recently reported in nanostructures, compared to the raw materials' ZT values. In addition, low dimensionality can improve a device's power factor, offering an additional enhancement in ZT. In this work the atomistic sp3d5s*-spin-orbit-coupled tight-binding model is used to calculate…
