Topological semimetals provide new opportunities for exploring new thermoelectric phenomena, because of their exotic and nontrivial electronic structure topology around the Fermi surface. In this study, we report on the discovery of giant transverse and longitudinal magneto-thermoelectric (MTE) effects in Mg3Bi2, which is predicted to be a type-II nodal-line semimetal in the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The maximum transverse power factor is 2182 μWm^{-1}K^{-2} at 13.5 K and 6 Tesla. The longitudinal power factor reaches up to 3043μWm^{-1}K^{-2} at 15 K and 13 Tesla, which is 20 times higher than in a zero-strength magnetic field and is also comparable to state-of-the-art MTE materials. By compensating Mg loss in the Mg-rich conditions for turning carrier concentration, the sample obtained in this work shows a large linear non-saturating magnetoresistance of 940% under a field of 14 Tesla. This is a two-orders-of-magnitude increase with respect to the normal Mg-deficiency Mg3Bi2 sample. Using density functional calculations, we attribute the underlying mechanism to the parent nodal-line electronic structure without SOC and the anisotropic Fermi surface shape with SOC, highlighting the essential role of high carrier mobility and open electron orbits in moment space. Our work offers a new avenue toward highly efficient thermoelectric materials through the design of Fermi surfaces with special topological electronic structures in novel quantum materials.
To achieve thermoelectric energy conversion, a large transverse thermoelectric effect in topological materials is crucial. However, the general relationship between topological electronic structures and transverse thermoelectric effect remains unclear, restricting the rational design of novel transverse thermoelectric materials. Herein, we demonstrate a topological transition-induced giant transverse thermoelectric effect in polycrystalline Mn-doped Mg3+δBi2 material, which has a competitively large transverse thermopower (617 uV/K), power factor (20393 uWm-1K-2), magnetoresistance (16600%), a…
To assess the potential of polycrystalline MnBi as a transverse thermoelectric material, we have experimentally investigated its anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) by means of the heat flux method. We prepared MnBi samples by powder metallurgy; this technique allows the preparation of samples in arbitrary shapes with the possibility to tailor their magnetic properties. In the material exhibiting the highest remanent magnetization, we found a value of the ANE thermopower of -1.1 $μ$V/K at 1 T, after the compensation of the ordinary Nernst effect from pure bismuth present inside the polycrystalline s…
Transition metal oxide thin films show versatile electrical, magnetic, and thermal properties which can be tailored by deliberately introducing macroscopic grain boundaries via polycrystalline solids. In this study, we focus on the modification of the magnetic and thermal transport properties by fabricating single- and polycrystalline epitaxial SrRuO3 thin films using pulsed laser epitaxy. Using epitaxial stabilization technique with atomically flat polycrystalline SrTiO3 substrate, epitaxial polycrystalline SrRuO3 thin film with crystalline quality of each grain comparable to that of single-c…
Topological Kondo insulator SmB6 has attracted quite a lot of attentions from condensed matter physics community. A number of unique electronic properties, including low- temperature resistivity anomaly, 1D electronic transport and 2D Fermi surfaces have been observed in SmB6. Here, we report on thermoelectric transport properties of polycrystalline SmB6 over a broad temperature from 300 K to 2 K. An anomalous transition in the temperature-dependent Seebeck coefficient S from S(T) ~ T-1 to S(T) ~ T was observed around 12 K. Such a transition demonstrates a transition of conductivity from 3D me…
Weyl semimetals combine topological and semimetallic effects, making them candidates for interesting and effective thermoelectric transport properties. Here, we present experimental results on polycrystalline NbP, demonstrating the simultaneous existence of a large Nernst effect and a large magneto-Seebeck effect, which is typically not observed in a single material at the same temperature. We compare transport results from two polycrystalline samples of NbP with previously published work, observing a shift in the temperature at which the maximum Nernst and magneto-Seebeck thermopowers occur, …
A suite measurements of the electrical, thermal, and vibrational properties are conducted on palladium sulfide (PdS) in order to investigate its thermoelectric performance. The tetragonal structure with the space group $P$42/$m$ for PdS is determined from X-ray diffraction measurement. The unique temperature dependence of mobility suggests that acoustic phonons and ion impurity scattering are two dominant scattering mechanisms within the compound. The obtained power factor of $27$ $μ$Wcm$^{-1}$K$^{-2}$ at 800 K is the largest value in the remaining transition-metal sulfides studied so far. The…
We report a strategy based on introduction of point defects for improving the thermoelectric properties of FeSb2, a promising candidate for low temperature applications. Introduction of Sb deficiency to the tune of 20% leads to enhancement in the values of electrical conductivity (σ) and Seebeck coefficient (S) accompanied with a concomitant suppression in lattice thermal conductivity (\k{appa}lat) values in samples prepared using conventional solid state reaction route. These observations in polycrystalline FeSb2-x provides ample motivation for a dedicated exploration of thermoelectric behavi…
The discovery of topological materials has provided new opportunities to exploit advanced materials for heat-to-electricity energy conversion as they share many common characteristics with thermoelectric materials. In this work, we report the magneto-thermoelectric properties and Nernst effect of the topological Weyl semimetal NbP. We find that polycrystalline, bulk NbP shows a significantly larger Nernst thermopower than its conventional thermopower under magnetic field. As a result, a maximum Nernst power factor of ~ 35*10-4 Wm-1K-2 is achieved at 9 T and 136 K, which is 4 times higher than …
Grain boundaries are commonly observed in carbon nanostructures, but their influence on thermal and electric properties are still not completely understood. Using a combined approach of density functional tight-binding theory and non-equilibrium Green functions we investigate electron and phonon transport in carbon based systems. In this work, quantum transport and thermoelectric properties are summarized for graphene sheets, graphene nanoribbons and carbon nanotubes with a variety of grain boundary types in a wide temperature range. Motivated by previous findings that disorder scatters phonon…
Transverse thermoelectric devices consist of only one thermoelectric material, unlike conventional longitudinal thermoelectric devices that require two types of thermoelectric materials with p- and n-type polarities. However, scalable synthesis of materials that demonstrate axis-dependent carrier polarity, which is a prospective component to demonstrate the transverse thermoelectric device, is challenging. This paper reports that polycrystalline NaSn$_2$As$_2$, which was prepared by using uniaxial hot pressing, displayed axis-dependent carrier polarity. The preferred orientation of the sample …
The Hall and Seebeck coefficients, electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity of polycrystalline NiSi3P4 were characterized from 2 to 775K. Undoped NiSi3P4 behaves like a narrow gap semiconductor, with activated electrical resistivity ρbelow room temperature and a large Seebeck coefficient of ~400uV/K at 300K. Attempts to substitute boron for silicon resulted in the production of extrinsic holes, yielding moderately-doped semiconductor behavior with ρincreasing with increasing temperature above ~150\,K. Hall carrier densities are limited to approximately 5x10^{19}/cm^3 at 200K, which woul…
The power factor of pure p-type ZnSb has been calculated via ab initio simulations assuming that the carrier concentrations are due to the doping effect of intrinsic zinc vacancies. With a vacancy concentration close to the experimental solubility limit we were able to perfectly reproduce the Power Factor measured in polycrystalline ZnSb samples. The methodology has then been successfully extended for predicting the effect of extrinsic doping elements on the thermoelectric properties of ZnSb. Germanium and tin seem to be promising p-type doping elements. In addition, we give, for the first tim…
Engineering materials to include nanoscale porosity or other nanoscale structures has become a well-established strategy for enhancing the thermoelectric performance of dielectrics. However, the approach is only considered beneficial for materials where the intrinsic phonon mean-free path is much longer than that of the charge carriers. As such, the approach would not be expected to provide significant performance gains in polycrystalline semiconducting alloys, such as SixGe1-x, where mass disorder and grains provide strong phonon scattering. In this manuscript, we demonstrate that the additio…
Large-volume deployment of Si-based Seebeck generators can be foreseen only if polycrystalline rather than single crystalline materials can be actually used. The aim of this study was therefore to verify whether polycrystalline Si films deposited on top of a SiO$_2$ insulating layer can develop interesting thermoelectric power factors. We prepared 450-nm thick heavily boron doped polysilicon layers, setting the initial boron content in the film to be in excess of the boron solubility in polycrystalline silicon at 1000 °C. Isochronal thermal annealings were then used to modify the B$_{Si}$ cont…
We find that Ag-interstitial ($Ag_I$) acts as an electron donor and plays an important role in Ag-excess doped polycrystalline PbTe thermoelectric materials. When Ag is heavily doped in PbTe, the neutral (Ag-Ag) dimer defect is formed at the Pb-site and the environment becomes Pb-rich/Te-poor condition. Then the positively ionized Ag interstitial ($Ag_I^+$) defect becomes the major defect under Pb-rich condition. Due to the small formation energy and small diffusion barrier of $Ag_I^+$, Ag can be easily dissolved into the PbTe matrix. The temperature behavior of the Ag defect formation energy …
Motivated by the recent discovery of a large anomalous Nernst effect in Co$_2$MnGa, Fe$_3X$ ($X$=Al, Ga) and Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$, we performed a first-principles study to clarify the origin of the enhancement of the transverse thermoelectric conductivity ($α_{ij}$) in these ferromagnets. The intrinsic contribution to $α_{ij}$ can be understood in terms of the Berry curvature ($Ω$) around the Fermi level, and $Ω$ is singularly large along nodal lines (which are gapless in the absence of the spin-orbit coupling) in the Brillouin zone. We find that not only the Weyl points but also stationary point…
The effects of the unique density of states (DOS) of a topological type-II nodal-line semimetal (NLS) on its thermoelectric (TE) transport properties are investigated through a combination of semi-analytical and first-principles methods with "spinless Mg$_3$Bi$_2$" as artificial material. The DOS in such a type-II NLS possesses two van Hove singularities near the energy of the nodal line that leads to a large $S$ value compared to the normal metals. Combined with the linear band at the nodal line that gives high electrical conductivity $σ$, the type-II NLS can exhibit a relatively high TE powe…
We used density functional and many-body perturbation theory to calculate the quasiparticle band structures and electronic transport parameters of p-type SnSe both for the low-temperature Pnma and high-temperature Cmcm phases. The Pnma phase has an indirect band gap of 0.829 eV while the Cmcm has a direct band gap of 0.464 eV. Both phases exhibit multiple local band extrema within an energy range comparable to the thermal energy of carriers from the global extrema. We calculated the electronic transport coefficients for single-crystal and polycrystalline materials to understand previous experi…
Thermoelectric properties of polycrystalline p-type ZrTe5 are reported in temperature (T) range 2 - 340 K. Thermoelectric power (S) is positive and reaches up to 458 uV/K at 340 K on increasing T. The value of Fermi energy 16 meV, suggests low carrier density of ~ 9.5 X 10^18 cm-3. A sharp anomaly in S data is observed at 38 K, which seems intrinsic to p-type ZrTe5. The thermal conductivity value is low (2 W/m-K at T = 300 K) with major contribution from lattice part. Electrical resistivity data shows metal to semiconductor transition at T ~ 150 K and non-Arrhenius behavior in the semiconducti…
Polycrystalline Sb 2 Te 3-x Se x (0.0 < x < 1.0) samples were synthesized by the solid state reaction method. The structural analysis showed that up to the maximal concentration of Se, the samples possess the Rhombohedral crystal symmetry (space group R 3 m ). Increase of Se content increases the resistivity of the samples. Variation of phonon frequencies, observed from Raman spectroscopic study, depict anomalous behaviour around x = 0.2. The sample Sb 2 Te 2.8 Se 0.2 also shows maximum Seebeck coefficient, carrier concentration and thermoelectric power factor. Nature of scattering mechanism c…
The preparation and properties of polycrystalline Bi$_2$O$_2$Se -- pitfalls and difficulties with reproducibility and charge transport limiting parameters
An unconventional approach to enhance the transverse thermopower by combining magnetic and thermoelectric materials, namely the Seebeck-driven transverse thermoelectric generation (STTG), has been proposed and demonstrated recently. Here, we improve on the previously used sample structure and achieve large transverse thermopower over 40 $μ$V K$^{-1}$ due to STTG in on-chip devices. We deposited polycrystalline Fe-Ga alloy films directly on n-type Si substrates, where Fe-Ga and Si serve as the magnetic and thermoelectric materials, respectively. Using microfabrication, contact holes were create…
The lattice thermal conductivity of the candidate thermoelectric material Mg$_3$Sb$_2$ is studied from first principles, with the inclusion of anharmonic, isotope, and boundary scattering processes, and via an accurate solution of the Boltzmann equation. We find that the anomalously low observed conductivity is due to grain-boundary scattering of phonons, whereas the purely anharmonic conductivity is an order of magnitude larger. Mass disorder due to alloying and off-stoichiometry is also found to contribute significantly to its decrease. Combining ab initio values vs sample size with measured…
We report the thermoelectric properties of polycrystalline samples of Ca3Pb1-xBixO (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2) and Ca3SnO, both crystallizing in a cubic antiperovskite-type structure. The Ca3SnO sample shows metallic resistivity and its thermoelectric power approaches 100 uV K-1 at room temperature, resulting in the thermoelectric power factor of Ca3SnO being larger than that of Ca3Pb1-xBixO. On the basis of Hall and Sommerfeld coefficients, the Ca3SnO sample is found to be a p-type metal with a carrier density of ~1019 cm-3, a mobility of ~80 cm2 V-1 s-1, both comparable to those in degenerated semicon…
We report the results of our experimental studies on the magnetic, transport and thermoelectric properties of the ferromagnetic metal CoMnSb. Sizable anomalous Hall conductivity $σ_{yx}$ and transverse thermoelectric conductivity $α_{yx}$ are found experimentally and comparable in size to the values estimated from density-functional theory. Our experiment further reveals that CoMnSb exhibits $-T\ln T$ critical behavior in $α_{yx}(T)$, deviating from Fermi liquid behavior $α_{yx}\sim T$ over a decade of temperature between 10 K to 400 K, similar to ferromagnetic Weyl and nodal-line semimetals. …
Polycrystalline samples of Er$_{1-x}$Ho$_x$NiSb ($x$ = 0, 0.2, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.8, 1) were characterized by means of x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and optical metallography. The results proved the formation of half-Heusler alloys in the entire composition range. Their electrical transport properties (resistivity, thermoelectric power) were studied in the temperature interval 350-1000 K. The measured electrical resistivity spanned between 5 and 25 $μΩ$m. The maximum thermopower of 50-65 $μ$V/K was observed at temperatures 500-650 K. Replacing Ho for Er resu…
Polycrystalline sample of the new layered superconductor Bi4O4S3 is successfully synthesized by solid-state reaction method by using Bi, S and Bi2O3 powders with one step reaction. The superconducting transition temperature (Tconset=4.5 K), the zero resistance transition temperature (Tc0=4.07 K) and the diamagnetic transition temperature (4.02 K at H=10 Oe) were confirmed by electrical transport and magnetic measurements. Also, our results indicate a typical type II-superconductor behavior. In addition, a large thermoelectric effect was observed with a dimensionless thermoelectric figure of me…

We prepared polycrystalline samples of NaCo2-xMxO4 substituted for the Co site by other 3d or 4d elements (M=Mn,Cu, Zn, Ru, Rh, and Pd). While some of the elements (M=Mn,Ru and Rh) act as a strong scatterer to give rise to a rapid increase in resistivity, the others (M=Cu, Zn and Pd) do not deteriorate the electric conduction of the host. Most unusually, the Cu substitution significantly enhances the thermopower, which increases the figure of merit by several times at 100 K.
Science-driven design of future thermoelectric materials requires a deep understanding of the fundamental relationships between microstructure and transport properties. Grain boundaries in polycrystalline materials influence the thermoelectric performance through the scattering of phonons or the trapping of electrons due to space-charge effects. Yet, the current lack of careful investigations on grain boundary-associated features hinders further optimization of properties. Here, we study n-type NbCo1-xPtxSn half-Heusler alloys, which were synthesized by ball milling and spark plasma sintering …
In this study, the synergistic effect of the particle size of the dispersed phase and the interface thermal resistance (R$_{int}$) between the phases on the phonon thermal conductivity ($κ_{ph}$) of the (1-x)La$_{0.95}$Sr$_{0.05}$Co$_{0.95}$Mn$_{0.05}$O$_3$/(x)WC thermoelectric composite, is demonstrated. Further, the correlation between the R$_{int}$ and the Kapitza radius is discussed using the Bruggeman's asymmetrical model. In particular, the polycrystalline La$_{0.95}$Sr$_{0.05}$Co$_{0.95}$Mn$_{0.05}$O$_3$ sample is synthesized using a standard-solid state route. The presence of WC nanopa…
Thermoelectric (TE) materials research plays a vital role in heat-to-electrical energy conversion and refrigeration applications. Bismuth-antimony (Bi-Sb) alloy is a promising material for thermoelectric cooling. Herein, a high figure of merit, ZT, near 0.6 at cryogenic temperatures (100-150K) has been achieved in melt-spun n-type Bi85Sb15 bulk samples consisting of micron-size grains. The achieved ZT is nearly 50 percents higher than polycrystalline averaged single crystal ZT of ~0.4, and it is also significantly higher than ZT of less than ~0.3 measured below 150K in Bi-Te alloys commonly us…
Chemical doping is one of the most important strategies for tuning electrical properties of semiconductors, particularly thermoelectric materials. Generally, the main role of chemical doping lies in optimizing the carrier concentration, but there can potentially be other important effects. Here, we show that chemical doping plays multiple roles for both electron and phonon transport properties in half-Heusler thermoelectric materials. With ZrNiSn-based half-Heusler materials as an example, we use high-quality single and polycrystalline crystals, various probes, including electrical transport m…
We report the first principles study of structural, elastic, electronic, optical and thermoelectric properties of newly synthesized K2Cu2GeS4. The structural parameters are found to be in good agreement with experimental results. The single crystal elastic constants (Cij) are calculated and K2Cu2GeS4 is found to be mechanical stable. The analysis of polycrystalline elastic constants reveals that the compound is expected to be soft in nature. The values of Pugh and Poisson ratios suggested that the compound lies in the border line of ductile/brittle behavior. The chemical bonding is primarily i…
Simultaneous achievement of large anomalous Nernst effect and reduced thermal conductivity in sintered polycrystalline topological Heusler ferromagnets
The electronic Seebeck response in a conductor involves the energy-dependent mean free path of the charge carriers and is affected by crystal structure, scattering from boundaries and defects, and strain. Previous photothermoelectric (PTE) studies have suggested that the thermoelectric properties of polycrystalline metal nanowires are related to grain structure, though direct evidence linking crystal microstructure to the PTE response is difficult to elucidate. Here, we show that room temperature scanning PTE measurements are sensitive probes that can detect subtle changes in the local Seebeck…
Thermoelectrics (TE) materials manifest themselves in direct conversion of temperature differences to electric power and vice versa. Despite remarkable advances have been achieved in the past decades for various TE systems, the energy conversion efficiencies of TE devices, which is characterized by a dimensionless figure-of-merit (ZT ), remain a generally poor factor that severely limits their competitiveness and range of employment. The bottleneck for substantially boosting ZT coefficient lies in the strong interdependence of the physical parameters involved in electronic and phononic transpo…
PbTe is a leading thermoelectric material at intermediate temperatures, largely thanks to its low lattice thermal conductivity. However, its efficiency is too low to compete with other forms of power generation. This efficiency can be effectively enhanced by designing nanostructures capable of scattering phonons over a wide range of length scales to reduce the lattice thermal conductivity. The presence of grain boundaries can reduce the thermal conductivity to $\sim 0.5$ Wm$^{-1}$K$^{-1}$ for small vacancy concentrations and grain sizes. However, grains anneal at finite temperature, and equili…
For longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (LSSE) devices, a multilayer structure comprising ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic layers is expected to improve their thermoelectric power. In this study, we developed the fabrication method for alternately stacked yttrium-iron-garnet (YIG)/Pt multilayer films on a gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) (110) substrate, GGG/[YIG(49 nm)/Pt(4 nm)]$_n$ ($n =$ 1 - 5) based on room-temperature sputtering and $ex$-$situ$ post-annealing method and we evaluated their structural and LSSE properties. The fabricated [YIG/Pt]$_n$ samples show flat YIG/Pt interfaces and almost i…

The electrical, thermal conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of the quenched, annealed and slowly cooled phases of the layer compound CuCrS2 have been reported between 15K to 300K. We also confirm the antiferromagnetic transition at 40K in them by our magnetic measurements between 2K and 300K. The crystal flakes show a minimum around 100K in their in-plane resistance behavior. For the polycrystalline pellets the resistivity depends on their flaky texture and it attains at most 10 to 20 times of the room temperature value at the lowest temperature of measurement. The temperature dependence is c…
A simple apparatus for the measurement of Seebeck coefficient ($α$) in the temperature range 300-620 K has been fabricated. Our design is appropriate for the characterization of samples with different geometries like disk and rod shaped. The sample holder assembly of the apparatus has been designed in such a way that, single heater used for sample heating purpose is enough to provide a self maintain temperature gradient (1-10 K) across the sample. The value of $α$ is obtained without explicit measurement of temperature gradient. The whole apparatus is fabricated from the materials, which are c…
Single crystals of CaZn2Sb2, EuZn2Sb2, and YbZn2Sb2 were grown from melts of nominal composition AZn5Sb5 (A=Ca,Eu,Yb) with the excess melt being removed at 1073\,K. The electrical transport properties are consistent with those previously reported for polycrystalline samples. This confirms that the $p$-type carrier concentrations ranging from 2x10^{19}cm^{-3} to ~1x10^{20}cm^{-3} are intrinsic to these materials. Also consistent with transport in polycrystalline materials, the carrier mobility is found to be lowest in CaZn2Sb2, suggesting the trends in mobility and thermoelectric efficiency wit…
The following report considers textured materials of the DyBa2Cu3O7 type seeded with a Nd123 seed as initiator. They are grown with an excess 20% Dy211 phase on a Dy2O3 substrate. We report chemical characterizations, electrical resistivity, thermoelectric power and thermal conductivity over a broad temperature range as a function of an applied magnetic field up to 6 T. We show that specific features appear on the magneto thermal transport properties different in these materials from those found in single crystals and polycrystalline samples. We propose that two vortex regimes can be distingui…
The thermoelectric properties of single- and polycrystalline FeGa3 are systematically investigated over a wide temperature range. At low temperatures, below 20 K, previously not known pronounced peaks in the thermal conductivity (400-800 W K^-1m-1) with corresponding maxima in the thermopower (in the order of -16000 microV/K) were found in single crystalline samples. Measurements in single crystals along [100] and [001] directions indicate only a slight anisotropy in both the electrical and thermal transport. From susceptibility and heat capacity measurements, a structural or magnetic phase tr…
Analogous to the Hall effect, the Nernst effect is the generation of a transverse voltage due to a temperature gradient in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The Nernst effect has promise for thermoelectric applications and as a probe of electronic structure. In magnetic materials, a so-called anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) is possible in zero magnetic field. Here we report a colossal ANE reaching 23 $μ$V/K in the ferromagnetic metal UCo$_{0.8}$Ru$_{0.2}$Al. Uranium's $5f$ electrons provide strong electronic correlations that lead to narrow bands, which are a known route to produci…
Since spin currents can be generated, detected, and manipulated via the spin Hall effect (SHE), the design of strong SHE materials has become a focus in the field of spintronics. Because of the recent experimental progress also the spin Nernst effect (SNE), the thermoelectrical counterpart of the SHE, has attracted much interest. Empirically strong SHEs and SNEs are associated with $d$-band compounds, such as transition metals and their alloys -- the largest spin Hall conductivity (SHC) in a $p$-band material is $\sim 450$ $\left(\hbar/e\right)\left(Ω\cdot cm\right)^{-1}$ for a Bi-Sb alloy, wh…
Resolving the structure of energy bands in transport experiments is a major challenge in condensed matter physics and material science. Sometimes, however, traditional electrical conductance or resistance measurements only provide very small signals, and thus limit the ability to obtain direct band structure information. In this case, it has been proven beneficial to employ thermoelectric measurements which are sensitive to the first derivative of the density of states with respect to energy, rather than to its value itself. Due to the large interest in topological effects these days, it is im…
