The electrical, thermal conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of the quenched, annealed and slowly cooled phases of the layer compound CuCrS2 have been reported between 15K to 300K. We also confirm the antiferromagnetic transition at 40K in them by our magnetic measurements between 2K and 300K. The crystal flakes show a minimum around 100K in their in-plane resistance behavior. For the polycrystalline pellets the resistivity depends on their flaky texture and it attains at most 10 to 20 times of the room temperature value at the lowest temperature of measurement. The temperature dependence is complex and no definite activation energy of electronic conduction can be discerned. We find that the Seebeck coefficient is between 200-450 microV/K and is unusually large for the observed resistivity values of between 5-100 mOhm-cm at room temperature. The figure of merit ZT for the thermoelectric application is 2.3 for our quenched phases, which is much larger than 1 for useful materials. The thermal conductivity K is mostly due to lattice conduction and is reduced by the disorder in Cu- occupancy in our quenched phase. A dramatic reduction of electrical and thermal conductivity is found as the antiferromagnetic transition is approached from the paramagnetic region, and K subsequently rises in the ordered phase. We discuss the transport properties as being similar to a doped Kondo-insulator.
The discovery of an intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator (AFM-TI) in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ has attracted intense attention, most of which lies on its electrical properties. In this paper, we report electronic, thermal, and thermoelectric transport studies of this newly found AFM-TI. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of its resistivity, thermal conductivity, and Seebeck coefficient indicate strong coupling between charge, lattice, and spin degrees of freedom in this system. Furthermore, MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ exhibits a large anomalous Nernst signal, which is associated with non-zero …
We report on the thermoelectric power $S(T)$, electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity measurements on the antiferromagnetic CeCoAl$_4$ compound. The Néel temperature of CeCoAl$_4$ is $T_N$=13.5K and a metamagnetic-like transition occurs in the magnetic field of about 7.5T. We show that the magnetic contribution to the thermoelectric power, $S_f(T)$, exhibits a large peak due to the crystal electric field (CEF) at about 240K and a small anomaly around the ordering temperature. Surprisingly, the CEF related $S_f(T)$ peak is close to the upper CEF excitation energy $Δ_2$=202K, in contrast…
The effect of correlated hopping on the charge and heat transport is investigated for the Falicov-Kimball model. Exact solutions for the electrical and thermal conductivities and thermoelectric power are obtained within the dynamical mean field theory. The temperature dependences of the transport coefficients are analysed for particular values of correlated hopping which correspond to the significant reconstruction of the density of states and transport function. The cases with strong enhancement of thermoelectric properties are elucidated.
The search for semiconductors with high thermoelectric figure of merit has been greatly aided by theoretical modeling of electron and phonon transport, both in bulk materials and in nanocomposites. Recent experiments have studied thermoelectric transport in ``strongly correlated'' materials derived by doping Mott insulators, whose insulating behavior without doping results from electron-electron repulsion, rather than from band structure as in semiconductors. Here a unified theory of electrical and thermal transport in the atomic and ``Heikes'' limit is applied to understand recent transport e…
We study longitudinal electric and thermoelectric transport coefficients of Dirac fermions on a simple lattice model where tuning of a single parameter enables us to change the type of Dirac cones from type-I to type-II. We pay particular attention to the behavior of the critical situation, i.e., the type-III Dirac cone. We find that the transport coefficients of the type-III Dirac fermions behave as the limiting case of neither the type-I nor type-II. On the one hand, the qualitative behaviors of the type-III case are similar to those of the type-I case. On the other hand, the transport coeff…
Physical properties of the thermoelectric oxide NaCo_2O_4 are briefly reviewed. The high thermoelectric properties of this material are attributed to the substantially enhanced effective mass, which comes from the large entropy of Co$^{4+}$ in the low spin state. The large entropy confined in the CoO_2 block causes a spin-density-wave transition at 22 K upon Cu substitution for Co, which can be regarded as ``order from disorder''.
A macroscopic description of thermoelectric phenomena involves several tensorial transport coefficients. Textbook microscopic Kubo formulas for them are plagued with ambiguities in the definitions of the current operators and the magnetization. We derive a version of these formulas for lattice systems which is free from ambiguities but contains additional terms compared to the textbook results. For symmetric components of thermoelectric tensors, we identify a large class of lattice systems for which the additional terms vanish with a natural choice of the energy current. To eliminate ambiguiti…
Universality and the thermoelectric transport properties of a double quantum dot system: Seeking for conditions that improve the thermoelectric efficiency
We study the thermoelectric properties of a double-Weyl fermion system, possibly realized in $\mathrm{HgCr_2Se_4}$ and $\mathrm{SrSi_2}$, by a semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory. We investigate different relaxation processes including short-range disorder and electron-electron interaction on the thermoelectric transport coefficients. It is found that the anisotropy of the band dispersion for in-plane and out-of-plane momentum directions affects the relaxation time for transport in different directions. The transport also exhibits an interesting directional dependence on the chemical pot…
We investigate the low-temperature electrical and thermal transport properties in atomically precise metallic heterostructures involving strongly-correlated electron systems. The model of the Mott-insulator/ band-insulator superlattice was discussed in the framework of the slave-boson mean-field approximation and transport quantities were derived by use of the Boltzmann transport equation in the relaxation-time approximation. The results for the optical conductivity are in good agreement with recently published experimental data on (LaTiO$_3)_N$/(SrTiO$_3)_M$ superlattices and allow us to esti…
We present a microscopic theory for quantum thermoelectric and heat transport in the Schwarzian regime of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. As a charged fermion realization of the SYK model in nanostructures we assume a setup based on a quantum dot connected to the charge reservoirs through weak tunnel barriers. We analyze particle-hole symmetry breaking effects crucial for both Seebeck and Peltier coefficients. We show that the quantum charge and heat transport at low temperatures are defined by the interplay between elastic and inelastic processes such that the inelastic processes provide a…
We study electric, thermal, and thermoelectric conductivities in the vicinity of a z=2 superconductor-diffusive metal transition in two dimensions, both in the high and low frequency limits. We find violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law and a dc thermoelectric conductivity $α$ that does not vanish at low temperatures, in contrast to Fermi liquids. We introduce a Langevin equation formalism to study critical dynamics over a broad region surrounding the quantum critical point.
We investigate the effect of vibrational degrees of freedom on the linear thermoelectric transport through a single-level quantum dot described by the spinless Anderson-Holstein impurity model. To study the effects of strong electron-phonon coupling, we use the nonperturbative numerical renormalization group approach. We also compare our results, at weak to intermediate coupling, with those obtained by employing the functional renormalization group method, finding good agreement in this parameter regime. When applying a gate voltage at finite temperatures, the inelastic scattering processes, i…
We have measured the thermopower across the metamagnetic transition of the heavy fermion compound CeRu2Si2 at temperatures down to 0.1K and magnetic fields up to 11.5T. We find a large negative enhancement of the thermopower on crossing the metamagnetic field, as well as a sudden change in slope. We argue that this is consistent with the Zeeman-driven deformation of the Fermi surface through a topological transition. The field dependence of the thermopower highlights the discrepancy between thermodynamic and transport properties across the metamagnetic transition.
On the basis of the linear response transport theory, the general expressions for the thermoelectric transport coefficients, such as thermoelectric power (S), Nernst coefficient (ν), and thermal conductivity (κ), are derived by using the Fermi liquid theory. The obtained expression is exact as for the most singular term in terms of 1/γ_k^* (γ_k^* being the quasiparticle damping rate). We utilize the Ward identities for the heat current which is derived by the local energy conservation law. Based on the derived expressions, we can calculate various thermoelectric transport coefficients within t…
Thermoelectric power measurements on the heavy fermion antiferromagnet Ce(Ru0.92Rh0.08)2Si2 under magnetic field (H) show clearly that the antiferromagnetic state below the critical field Hc ~ 2.8T can be fully decoupled from the pseudo-metamagnetic crossover at Hm ~ 5.8T which occurs when the magnetization reaches a critical value. By contrast to the weak field variation of the Sommerfeld coefficient of the specific heat in the field window from Hc to Hm, two electronic singularities with opposite signs are detected in the thermoelectric power. The interplay between the magnetic instability a…
We calculate the thermal and thermoelectric transport coefficients for a two-dimensional spin-density-wave metal in the presence of weak disorder and under an external magnetic field using the Mori-Zwanzig memory matrix formalism. As a consequence, we obtain that although the Seebeck coefficient $S$ displays a relatively conventional linear dependence on the temperature of the system, the Nernst coefficient $ν$ exhibits a clear signature of bad-metallicity within the so-called strange metal regime described by the model. This result agrees qualitatively with experimental transport data obtaine…
Motivated by the high sensitivity to Fermi surface topology and scattering mechanisms in magneto-thermoelectric transport, we have measured the thermopower and Nernst effect on the (011)-plane of the proposed topological Kondo insulator SmB$_6$. These experiments, together with electrical resistivity and Hall effect measurements, demonstrate that the (011)-plane also harbors a metallic surface with the effective mass in the order of 10-10$^2$ $m_0$. The surface and bulk conductances are well distinguished in these measurements and are categorized into metallic and non-degenerate semiconducting…
Within the framework of nonequilibrium Green's functions, we investigate the thermoelectric transport in a single molecular junction with electron-phonon and electron-electron interactions. By transforming into a displaced phonon basis, we are able to deal with these interactions non-perturbatively. Then, by invoking the weak tunneling limit, we are able to calculate the thermoelectricity. Results show that at low temperatures, resonances of the thermoelectric figure of merit ZT occur around the sides of resonances of electronic conductance but drops dramatically to zero at exactly these reson…
We investigate theoretically the thermoelectric transport through a circuit implementation of the three-channel "charge" Kondo model quantum simulator [Z. Iftikhar et al., Science 360, 1315 (2018)]. The universal temperature scaling law of the Seebeck coefficient is computed perturbatively approaching the non-Fermi liquid strong coupling fixed point using abelian bosonization technique. The predicted $T^{1/3}\log T$ scaling behavior of the thermoelectric power sheds a light on the properties of $Z_3$ emerging parafermions and gives an access to exploring pre-fractionalized zero modes in the qu…
We employ the functional renormalization group to study the effects of phonon-assisted tunneling on the nonequilibrium steady-state transport through a single level molecular quantum dot coupled to electronic leads. Within the framework of the spinless Anderson-Holstein model, we focus on small to intermediate electron-phonon couplings, and we explore the evolution from the adiabatic to the antiadiabatic limit and also from the low-temperature non-perturbative regime to the high temperature perturbative one. We identify the phononic signatures in the bias-voltage dependence of the electrical c…
We study the thermoelectric transport under shear strain in two spatial dimensional quantum matter using the holographic duality. General analytic formulae for the DC thermoelectric conductivities subjected to finite shear strain are obtained in terms of the black hole horizon data. Off-diagonal terms in the conductivity matrix appear also at zero magnetic field, resembling an emergent electronic nematicity which cannot nevertheless be identified with the presence of an anomalous Hall effect. For an explicit model study, we numerically construct a family of strained black holes and obtain the …
The electrical transport and thermoelectric properties of K_xSr_{1-x}Fe_2As_2 are investigated for 0<x<1. The resistivity rho(T) shows a crossover from Fermi liquid-like temperature dependence at small x to linear rho~T dependence at x_c=0.4. With further increasing x, rho(T) becomes non-linear again. The thermoelectric power S(T) exhibits a similar crossover with increasing x with a logarithmic T-dependence, S/T~ln(T), near the critical doping x_c. These results provide evidence for a quantum critical behavior due to the coupling of low-energy conduction electrons to two-dimensional spin fluc…
We develop a conformal-field theory approach for investigation of the quantum charge-, heat- and thermoelectric- transport through a quantum impurity fine tuned to a non-Fermi liquid regime. The non-Fermi-liquid operational mode is associated with the overscreened spin Kondo effect and controlled by the number of orbital channels. The universal low-temperature scaling and critical exponents for Seebeck and Peltier coefficients are investigated for the multichannel geometry. We derive and analyze the universal dependence of the thermoelectric coefficients on the number of orbital channels. We d…
Coexisting fluctuations towards various ordered states are ubiquitous in strongly correlated electronic systems. In particular, measurements of underdoped cuprate high-temperature superconductors reveal evidence for short range charge order in parallel to large superconducting fluctuations. Here we use a non-linear sigma model to describe a system with N competing orders, and calculate its transverse thermoelectric transport coefficient in the analytically tractable limit of large N . Our results, which determine the contribution of order parameter fluctuations to the Nernst signal, are approp…
In the present work we study charged black hole solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell action that have Thurston geometries on its near horizon region. In particular we find solutions with charged Solv and Nil geometry horizons. We also find Nil black holes with hyperscaling violation. For all our solutions we compute the thermoelectric DC transport coefficients of the corresponding dual field theory. We find that the Solv and Nil black holes without hyperscaling violation are dual to metals while those with hyperscaling violation are dual to insulators.
We investigate the conductance and thermopower of massless Dirac fermions through a quantum dot using a pseudogap Anderson model in the non-crossing approximation. When the Fermi level is at the Dirac point, the conductance has a cusp where the thermopower changes its sign. When the Fermi level is away from the Dirac point, the Kondo temperature illustrates a quantum impurity transition between an asymmetric strong coupling Kondo state and a localized moment state. The conductance shows a peak near this transition and reaches the unitary limit at low temperatures. The magnitude of the thermopo…
In this paper, we examine the conditions under which the nonlinear transport theory is inescapable, when a correlated quantum dot is symmetrically coupled to two leads submitted to temperature and voltage biases. By detailed numerical comparisons between nonlinear and linear currents, we show that the claimed nonlinear behavior in a temperature gradient for the electric current is not so genuine, and the linear theory made at the operating temperature $\bar{T}= (T_H+T_C)/2$ is unexpectedly robust. This is demonstrated for the single impurity Anderson model, in different regimes: resonant tunne…
We present a theory of thermoelectric transport in weakly disordered Weyl semimetals where the electron-electron scattering time is faster than the electron-impurity scattering time. Our hydrodynamic theory consists of relativistic fluids at each Weyl node, coupled together by perturbatively small inter-valley scattering, and long-range Coulomb interactions. The conductivity matrix of our theory is Onsager reciprocal and positive-semidefinite. In addition to the usual axial anomaly, we account for the effects of a distinct, axial-gravitational anomaly expected to be present in Weyl semimetals.…
We investigate nonlinear thermoelectric transport through quantum impurity systems with strong on-site interactions. We show that the steady-state transport through interacting quantum impurities in contact with electron reservoirs at significantly different temperatures can be captured by an effective-equilibrium density matrix, expressed compactly in terms of the Lippmann-Schwinger operators of the system. In addition, the reservoirs can be maintained at arbitrary chemical potentials. The interplay between the temperature gradient and bias voltage gives rise to a non-trivial breaking of part…
