The purpose of this paper is two-fold. First we review in detail the geometric aspects of the swampland program for supersymmetric 4d effective theories using a new and unifying language we dub `domestic geometry', the generalization of special Kähler geometry which does not require the underlying manifold to be Kähler or have a complex structure. All 4d SUGRAs are described by domestic geometry. As special Kähler geometries, domestic geometries carry formal brane amplitudes: when the domestic geometry describes the supersymmetric low-energy limit of a consistent quantum theory of gravity, its formal brane amplitudes have the right properties to be actual branes. The main datum of the domestic geometry of a 4d SUGRA is its gauge coupling, seen as a map from a manifold which satisfies the geometric Ooguri-Vafa conjectures to the Siegel variety; to understand the properties of the quantum-consistent gauge couplings we discuss several novel aspects of such `Ooguri-Vafa' manifolds, including their Liouville properties.
Our second goal is to present some novel speculation on the extension of the swampland program to no-supersymmetric effective theories of gravity. The idea is that the domestic geometric description of the quantum-consistent effective theories extends, possibly with some qualifications, also to the non-supersymmetric case.
The refined de Sitter (dS) conjecture provides two consistency conditions for an effective theory potential of a quantum gravity theory. Any inflationary model can be checked by these conditions and minimal gauge inflation is not an exception. We develop a generic method to analyze a monotonically growing potential with an inflection point on the way to the plateau near the top such as the potential in minimal gauge inflation model and the Higgs inflation. Taking the latest observational data into account, we find the fully consistent parameter space where the model resides in the Landscape ra…
We sharpen Swampland constraints on 8d supergravity theories by studying consistency conditions on worldvolume theory of 3-brane probes. Combined with a stronger form of the cobordism conjecture, this leads to the reconstruction of the compact internal geometry and implies strong restrictions on the gauge algebra and on some higher derivative terms (related to the level of the current algebra on the 1-brane). In particular we argue that 8d supergravity theories with $\mathfrak{g}_2$ gauge symmetry are in the Swampland. These results provide further evidence for the string lamppost principle in…
There is significant evidence suggesting that continuous global symmetries are always gauged in quantum gravity. However, very weakly gauged symmetries seem global to an effective field theory expansion in powers of Newton's constant. We show that, at least for Einsteinian quantum gravity on AdS, such extremely weak gaugings are indeed in the Swampland: Consistency with AdS black hole thermodynamics requires the bulk gauge coupling $g^2$ not to vanish faster than $\sim\exp(\ell^{d-1}/G)$, where $\ell$ is the $AdS_{d+1}$ radius and $G$ is Newton's constant as we take the $G\rightarrow0$ limit. …
We study the weak gravity conjecture, the swampland distance conjecture and the emergence proposal for $\mathcal{N}=1$ orientifold compactifications of type IIB string theory with O3-/O7-planes. We allow for orientifold projections with $h^{2,1}_+\neq 0$ which gives rise to closed-string $U(1)$ gauge fields, and our findings show that certain structures present for $\mathcal N=2$ compactifications are not present for $\mathcal N=1$. In particular, assumptions about stability have to be relaxed and we encounter an ambiguity for the emergence of gauge symmetries associated with the $h^{2,1}_+$ s…
In the context of 4d effective gravity theories with 8 supersymmetries, we propose to unify, strenghten, and refine the several swampland conjectures into a single statement: the structural criterion, modelled on the structure theorem in Hodge theory. In its most abstract form the new swampland criterion applies to all 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ effective theories (having a quantum-consistent UV completion) whether supersymmetry is \emph{local} or rigid: indeed it may be regarded as the more general version of Seiberg-Witten geometry which holds both in the rigid and local cases. As a first applicatio…
We derive bounds on the number of abelian gauge group factors in six-dimensional gravitational theories with minimal supersymmetry and in their F-theoretic realisations. These bounds follow by requiring consistency of certain BPS strings in the spectrum of the theory, as recently proposed in the literature. Under certain assumptions this approach constrains the number of abelian gauge group factors in six-dimensional supergravity theories with at least one tensor multiplet to be $N \leq 20$ (or $N \leq 22$ in absence of charged matter). For any geometric F-theory realisation with at least one …
We analyze the anomaly constraints on 6D supergravity theories with a single abelian U(1) gauge factor. For theories with charges restricted to $q = \pm1, \pm2$ and no tensor multiplets, anomaly-free models match those models that can be realized from F-theory compactifications almost perfectly. For theories with tensor multiplets or with larger charges, the F-theory constraints are less well understood. We show, however, that there is an infinite class of distinct massless charge spectra in the "swampland" of theories that satisfy all known quantum consistency conditions but do not admit a re…
Massive $U(1)$ gauge theories featuring parametrically light vectors are suspected to belong in the Swampland of consistent EFTs that cannot be embedded into a theory of quantum gravity. We study four-dimensional, chiral $U(1)$ gauge theories that appear anomalous over a range of energies up to the scale of anomaly-cancelling massive chiral fermions. We show that such theories require to be UV-completed at a finite cutoff below which a radial mode must appear, and cannot be decoupled -- a Stückelberg limit does not exist. When the infrared fermion spectrum contains a mixed $U(1)$-gravitational…
We point out that pure supergravity theories in $AdS$ with enough supersymmetry lead, upon taking the large radius limit, to flat space quantum gravities with a nonperturbatively exact global symmetry, and are therefore in the Swampland. The argument applies to any $AdS$ supergravity with gauged R-symmetry group, including truncations of most well known examples, such as $AdS_5$ without the $S^5$ or $AdS_4$ without the $S^7$. This demonstrates that extreme scale separation, at least with enough supersymmetry, is not realizable. Moreover pure $AdS$ theories are also in conflict with some other …
We argue for the quantum-gravitational inconsistency of certain 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ supergravity theories, whose anomaly-free gauge algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and hypermultiplet spectrum $M$ were observed in arxiv:2012.01437 to be realizable only as part of a larger gauge sector $(\mathfrak{g}' \supset \mathfrak{g}, M' \supset M)$ in F-theory. To detach any reference to a string theoretic method of construction, we utilize flavor symmetries to provide compelling reasons why the vast majority of such $(\mathfrak{g},M)$ theories are not compatible with quantum gravity constraints, and how the "au…

For certain terms in the action, supersymmetry can forbid an infinite number of possible contributions. We study whether such protection can occur in quantum gravity even without sufficient supersymmetry. We focus on whether the superpotential can vanish exactly in four-dimensional N=1 theories, and if the prepotential can be exactly cubic in N=2 theories. We investigate these questions in string theory and find that for almost all known string constructions the corrections allowed by supersymmetry do occur. However, we do find some special settings where all the corrections can be proven to v…
[Abridged] We realize the Agrawal-Obied-Vafa (AOV) swampland proposal of fading dark matter by the model of Salam-Sezgin and its string realization of Cvetic-Gibbons-Pope. The model describes a compactification of 6-dimensional supergravity with a monopole background on a 2-sphere. In 4 dimensions, there are 2 scalar fields, $X$ and $Y $, and the effective potential in the Einstein frame is an exponential with respect to $Y$ times a quadratic polynomial in the field $e^{-X}$. When making the volume of the 2-sphere large, namely for large values of $Y$, there appears a tower of states, which ac…
Completeness of the spectrum of charged branes in a quantum theory of gravity naturally motivates the question of whether consistency of what lives on the branes can be used to explain some of the Swampland conditions. In this paper we focus on consistency of what lives on string probes, to show some of the theories with ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetry in 10d and 6d, which are otherwise consistent looking, belong to the Swampland. Gravitational and gauge group anomaly inflow on these probes can be used to compute the gravitational central charges $(c_L,c_R)$ as well as the level of the group's …
We consider supergravity theories with 16 supercharges in Minkowski space with dimensions $d>3$. We argue that there is an upper bound on the number of massless modes in such theories depending on $d$. In particular we show that the rank of the gauge symmetry group $G$ in $d$ dimensions is bounded by $r_G\leq 26-d$. This in particular demonstrates that 4 dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ SYM theories with rank bigger than 22, despite being consistent and indeed finite before coupling to gravity, cannot be consistently coupled to ${\cal N}=4$ supergravity in Minkowski space and belong to the swampland. …
In this note, we prove that for all five-dimensional supergravities arising from M-theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold, points of vanishing gauge coupling lie at infinite distance in the moduli space. Conversely, any point at infinite distance in the vector multiplet moduli space is a point of vanishing gauge coupling. This agrees with expectations from the Tower/Sublattice Weak Gravity Conjecture, the Swampland Distance Conjecture, and the Emergence Proposal.

In the first part of this paper we will work out a close and so far not yet noticed correspondence between the swampland approach in quantum gravity and geometric flow equations in general relativity, most notably the Ricci flow. We conjecture that following the gradient flow towards a fixed point, which is at infinite distance in the space of background metrics, is accompanied by an infinite tower of states in quantum gravity. In case of the Ricci flow, this conjecture is in accordance with the generalized distance and AdS distance conjectures, which were recently discussed in the literature,…
We present a consistency condition for 8d ${\cal N} = 1$ supergravity theories with non-trivial global structure $G/Z$ for the non-Abelian gauge group, based on an anomaly involving the $Z$ 1-form center symmetry. The interplay with other Swampland criteria identifies the majority of 8d theories with gauge group $G/Z$, which have no string theory realization, as inconsistent quantum theories when coupled to gravity. While this condition is equivalent to geometric properties of elliptic K3 surfaces in F-theory compactifications, it constrains the unexplored landscape of gauge groups in other 8d…
Supergravity theories at D=4 allow to formulate the Swampland de Sitter conjectures in the complex field space of scalar components of chiral multiplets. We formulate the de Sitter and refined de Sitter conjecture by using the Kähler invariant ${\cal G}$-function and explore a class of models in the Landscape/Swampland scenario which obey and/or violate such conjectures. Furthermore we give a new construction of single exponential potentials in supergravity. These depend on a chiral superfield with a Kähler potential parametrizing an SU(1,1)/U(1) geometry. We show that the construction allows …
We show that massless fields with large abelian charges (up to at least q = 21) can be constructed in 6D F-theory models with a U(1) gauge group. To show this, we explicitly construct F-theory Weierstrass models with nonabelian gauge groups that can be broken to U(1) theories with a variety of large charges. Determining the maximum abelian charge allowed in such a theory is key to eliminating what seems currently to be an infinite swampland of apparently consistent U(1) supergravity theories with large charges.
We show that F-theory compactifications with abelian gauge factors generally exhibit a non-trivial global gauge group structure. The geometric origin of this structure lies with the Shioda map of the Mordell--Weil generators. This results in constraints on the U(1) charges of non-abelian matter consistent with observations made throughout the literature. In particular, we find that F-theory models featuring the Standard Model algebra actually realise the precise gauge group [SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1)]/Z6. Furthermore, we explore the relationship between the gauge group structure and geometric (un-)higg…
We argue a smallness of gauge couplings in abelian quiver gauge theories, taking the anomaly cancellation condition into account. In theories of our interest there exist chiral fermions leading to chiral gauge anomalies, and an anomaly-free gauge coupling tends to be small, and hence can give a non-trivial condition of the weak gravity conjecture. As concrete examples, we consider $U(1)^{k}$ gauge theories with a discrete symmetry associated with cyclic permutations between the gauge groups, and identify anomaly-free $U(1)$ gauge symmetries and the corresponding gauge couplings. Owing to this …
We investigate string-phenomenological questions of Hull's exotic superstring theories with Euclidean strings/branes and multiple times. These are known to be plagued by pathologies like the occurrence of ghosts. On the other hand, these theories exhibit de Sitter solutions. Our special focus lies on the question of the coexistence of such de Sitter solutions and ghost-free brane worlds. To this end, the world-sheet CFT description of Euclidean fundamental strings is generalized to include also the open string/D-brane sector. Demanding that in the "observable" gauge theory sector the gauge fie…
We investigate a relation of the contravariant geometry to the emergent gravity from noncommutative gauge theories. We give a refined formulation of the contravariant gravity and provide solutions to the contravariant Einstein equation. We linearize the equation around background solutions, including curved ones. A noncommutative gauge theory on the Moyal plane can be rewritten as an ordinary gauge theory on a curved background via the Seiberg-Witten map, which is known as the emergent gravity. We show that this phenomenon also occurs for a gauge theory on a noncommutative homogeneous Kähler b…
We classify the allowed structures of the discrete 1-form gauge sector in six-dimensional supergravity theories realized as F-theory compactifications. This provides upper bounds on the 1-form gauge factors $\mathbb{Z}_m$ and in particular demands each cyclic factor to obey $m\leq 6$. Our bounds correspond to the universal geometric constraints on the torsion subgroup of the Mordell-Weil group of elliptic Calabi-Yau three-folds. For any F-theory vacua with at least one tensor multiplet, we derive the constraints from the $\mathbb{P}^1$ fibration structure of the base two-fold and identify thei…
We study some graded geometric constructions appearing naturally in the context of gauge theories. Inspired by a known relation of gauging with equivariant cohomology we generalize the latter notion to the case of arbitrary Q-manifolds introducing thus the concept of equivariant Q-cohomology. Using this concept we describe a procedure for analysis of gauge symmetries of given functionals as well as for constructing functionals (sigma models) invariant under an action of some gauge group. As the main example of application of these constructions we consider the twisted Poisson sigma model. We o…
We study the stability and spectrum of BPS states in ${\cal N}=2$ supergravity. We find evidence, and prove for a large class of cases, that BPS stability exhibits a certain filtration which is partially independent of the value of the gauge couplings. Specifically, for any perturbative value of any gauge coupling $g \ll 1$, a BPS state can only decay to some constituents if those constituents do not become infinitely heavier than it in the vanishing coupling limit $g \rightarrow 0$. This stability filtration can be mathematically formulated in terms of the monodromy weight filtration of the l…
It is widely believed that consistent theories of quantum gravity satisfy two basic kinematic constraints: they are free from any global symmetry, and they contain a complete spectrum of gauge charges. For compact, abelian gauge groups, completeness follows from the absence of a 1-form global symmetry. However, this correspondence breaks down for more general gauge groups, where the breaking of the 1-form symmetry is insufficient to guarantee a complete spectrum. We show that the correspondence may be restored by broadening our notion of symmetry to include non-invertible topological operators…
