We perform a systematic study of the applicability of swampland constraints to theories of localized gravity. We find that these gravity theories can violate swampland constraints, but can be reconciled with them when coupled to a higher-dimensional gravity theory. They realize what we call $\textit{relative quantum gravity}$: to become consistent at the quantum level, these gravity theories must be defined as $\textit{relative}$ to a host higher-dimensional gravity theory.
We show that these theories can admit global symmetries, even anomalous ones; they can violate the cobordism, completeness, weak gravity, and distance conjectures; they may admit stable non-supersymmetric AdS vacua, or dS vacua. All swampland constraints are however satisfied when these gravity theories are regarded as relative and completed by coupling them to a higher-dimensional one.
We discuss these properties in $d$-dimensional gravity theories localized on Karch-Randall End of the World (ETW) boundaries of AdS$_{d+1}$ spacetime. For AdS$_d$ ETW branes we use the formalism of double holography to describe the appearance of the species scale and the emergence of gauge dynamics from the quantum backreaction of CFT$_d$ modes. We also study microscopically the swampland constraints in localized gravity in explicit string theory models. Concretely, we exploit the 10d supergravity solutions describing AdS$_4$ ETW branes for AdS$_5\times\mathbf{S}^5$, holographically dual to semi-infinite D3-branes ending on NS5- and D5-brane configurations, realizing 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ $SU(N)$ on half-space coupled to a 3d Gaiotto-Witten superconformal boundary CFT$_3$.
We survey recent studies of Gauss-Bonnet gravity and its dual conformal field theories, including their relation to the violation of the Kovtun-Starinets-Son viscosity bound. Via holography, we can also study properties such as microcausality and unitarity of boundary field theory duals. Such studies in turn supply constraints on bulk gravitational theories, consigning some of them to the swampland.
We view and provide further evidence for a number of Swampland criteria, including the Weak Gravity Conjecture, Distance Conjecture and bounds on the finiteness of the quantum gravity vacua from the prism of the finiteness of black hole entropy. Furthermore we propose that at least all of these Swampland statements may be more fundamentally a consequence of the finiteness of quantum gravity amplitudes.
We analyze AdS and dS swampland conjectures in a three-dimensional higher spin theory with self-interacting matter, which contains conformal gravity and is almost topological. A theory of a similar type was proposed as the effective theory in the high energy phase of non-critical M-theory in 3D. With some details differing from the usual string theory story, it is found that the resulting effective theory, namely topologically massive gravity, fits well into the web of the proposed swampland conjectures. Supporting a recent proposal, in particular we find that this 3D theory gives rise to a qu…
An alternative refined de Sitter conjecture giving rise to a natural combination of the first and second derivatives of the scalar potential was proposed recently by David Andriot and Christoph Roupec (Fortsch. Phys. 67 (2019) no.1-2, 1800105). In this work, we study the inflation models in a general scalar-tensor theory with exponential and hyperbolic tangent forms of potential as well as model with quantum corrected potential and examine whether these three models of inflation can satisfy this further refining de Sitter swampland conjecture or not. Regarding our analysis with proper choices …
On the basis of the idea that gravity defines a universal UV-completion and using a form of UV/IR correspondence we revisit some Swampland conjectures, in particular de Sitter and infinite distance conjectures, from the point of view of renormalization group energy flow. The rol and limitations of non perturbative instanton effects to define a metastable cosmological constant are briefly discussed in this context.
We argue that any proposed quantum theory of gravity with non-trivial cobordism classes in the space of configurations belongs to the Swampland. The argument is based on the assumption that there are no global symmetries in a consistent theory of quantum gravity. The triviality of the cobordism classes requires the existence of certain stringy defects that trivialize the potential cobordism classes. We provide evidence for this conjecture by identifying those defects demanded by this argument that could preserve supersymmetry, and predict the existence of new non-supersymmetric defects in stri…
We give a brief overview of the string landscape and techniques used to construct string compactifications. We then explain how this motivates the notion of the swampland and review a number of conjectures that attempt to characterize theories in the swampland. We also compare holography in the context of superstrings with the similar, but much simpler case of topological string theory. For topological strings, there is a direct definition of topological gravity based on a sum over a "quantum gravitational foam." In this context, holography is the statement of an identification between a gravi…
In this paper, we study various cosmological parameters and quantities in scalar-tensor gravity from inflation and swampland conjecture. Therefore, by selecting different models such as power-law, exponential, and logarithmic in the framework of scalar-tensor theory, we obtain potential, tensor-to-scalar ratio, and the scalar spectral index. Next, we examine new constraints and compare the corresponding results with the latest observable data. Here, we take advantage of the obtained results and determine the compatibility or incompatibility of the corresponding model with the swampland conject…
The swampland is the set of seemingly consistent low-energy effective field theories that cannot be consistently coupled to quantum gravity. In this review we cover some of the conjectural properties that effective theories should possess in order not to fall in the swampland, and we give an overview of their main applications to particle physics. The latter include predictions on neutrino masses, bounds on the cosmological constant, the electroweak and QCD scales, the photon mass, the Higgs potential and some insights about supersymmetry.

Swampland conjectures are a set of proposed necessary conditions for a low-energy effective field theory to have a UV completion inside a theory of quantum gravity. Swampland conjectures have interesting phenomenological consequences, and conversely phenomenological considerations are useful guidelines in sharping our understanding of quantum gravity.
We revisit the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory in view of the GW170817 event, which compels that the gravitational wave speed is equal to $c_T^2=1$ in natural units. We use an alternative approach compared to one previous work of ours, which enables us to express all the slow-roll indices and the observational indices as functions of the scalar field. Using our formalism we investigate if the Swampland criteria are satisfied for the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory and as we demonstrate, the Swampland criteria are satisfied for quite general forms of the potential and the Gauss-Bonnet coupling functi…
In this paper, we study a theory of gravity called mimetic $f(R, T)$ in the presence of swampland dS conjecture. For this purpose, we introduce several inflation solutions of the Hubble parameter H(N) from $f(R, T)= R+δT$ gravity model, in which R is Ricci scalar, and T denotes the trace of the energy-momentum tensor. Also, $δ$ and $N$ are the free parameter and a number of e-fold, respectively. Then we calculate quantities such as potential, Lagrange multiplier, slow-roll, and some cosmological parameters such as $n_{s}$ and $r$. Then we challenge the mentioned inflationary model from the swa…
On the basis of a number of Swampland conditions, we argue that the Hilbert space of baby universe states must be one-dimensional in a consistent theory of quantum gravity. This scenario may be interpreted as a type of "Gauss's law for entropy" in quantum gravity, and provides a clean synthesis of the tension between Euclidean wormholes and a standard interpretation of the holographic dictionary, with no need for an ensemble. Our perspective relies crucially on the recently-proposed potential for quantum-mechanical gauge redundancies between states of the universe with different topologies. By…
The Swampland program aims to determine the constraints that an effective field theory must satisfy to be consistent with a UV embedding in a quantum gravity theory. Different proposals have been formulated in the form of Swampland conjectures. In these lecture notes, we provide a pedagogical introduction to the most important Swampland conjectures, their connections and their realization in string theory compactifications. The notes are based on the series of lectures given by Irene Valenzuela at the online QFT and Geometry summer school in July 2020.
For any quasi de Sitter background, we show that a recently proposed scalar weak gravity conjecture (sWGC) follows from the swampland distance conjecture, together with the covariant entropy bound. While pointing out the limitations of our argument, we suggest how further generalizations of our result might indicate that the shape of the potential of a scalar field in a low-energy effective field theory gets highly constrained due to the distance conjecture alone, going beyond the refined de Sitter conjecture. We also correct some previous comments regarding cosmological implications of the sW…
Swampland conjecture has been recently proposed to connect early time cosmological models with the string landscape, and then to understand if related scalar fields and potentials can come from some fundamental theory in the high energy regime. In this paper, we discuss swampland criteria for $f(R)$ gravity considering models where duality symmetry is present. In this perspective, specific $f(R)$ models can naturally belong to the string landscape. In particular, it is possible to show that duality is a Noether symmetry emerging from dynamics. The selected $f(R)$ models, satisfying the swampla…
We observe that racetrack models for moduli stabilization are in tension with strong forms of the Weak Gravity Conjecture (WGC). Moreover, recently, it was noted that controlled KKLT-type de Sitter vacua seem to require a racetrack fine-tuning of the type introduced by Kallosh and Linde. We combine these observations and conclude that the quests for realizing parametrically large axion decay constants and controlled de Sitter vacua are intimately related. Finally, we discuss possible approaches to curing the conflict between the racetrack scheme and the WGC.
The Ooguri-Vafa Swampland Conjectures claim that in any consistent theory of quantum gravity, when venturing to large distances in scalar field space, a tower of particles will become light at a rate that is exponential in the field space distance. We provide a novel viewpoint on this claim: if we assume that a tower of states becomes light near a particular point in field space, and we further demand that loop corrections drive both gravity and the scalar to strong coupling at a common energy scale, then the requirement that the particles become light exponentially fast in the field-space dis…
In order to validate or invalidate a large class of low energy effective theories, the Swampland conjecture has attracted significant attention, recently. It can be stated as inequalities on the potential of a scalar field which is conjectured to satisfy certain constraints. In this work, we discuss the theoretical viability of deformed Starobinky gravity in light of the refined Swampland conjectures. We consider the deformation of the form $f(R)\sim R^{2(1-α)}$ with $α$ being a constant. We then constrain $α$ using the spectral index of curvature perturbation $n_s$ and the tensor-to-scalar ra…
Mimetic gravity analysis has been studied as a theory in various types of general relativity extensions, such as mimetic f(R) gravity, mimetic f(R, T) gravity, mimetic f(R, G) gravity, etc., in the literature. This paper presents a set of equations arising from mimetic conditions and studies cosmic inflation with a combination of mimetic f(G) gravity and swampland dS conjectures. We analyze and evaluate these results. Therefore, we first thoroughly introduce the mimetic f(G) gravity and calculate some cosmological parameters such as the scalar spectral index, the tensor-to-scalar ratio, and th…
We point out that pure supergravity theories in $AdS$ with enough supersymmetry lead, upon taking the large radius limit, to flat space quantum gravities with a nonperturbatively exact global symmetry, and are therefore in the Swampland. The argument applies to any $AdS$ supergravity with gauged R-symmetry group, including truncations of most well known examples, such as $AdS_5$ without the $S^5$ or $AdS_4$ without the $S^7$. This demonstrates that extreme scale separation, at least with enough supersymmetry, is not realizable. Moreover pure $AdS$ theories are also in conflict with some other …
There is significant evidence suggesting that continuous global symmetries are always gauged in quantum gravity. However, very weakly gauged symmetries seem global to an effective field theory expansion in powers of Newton's constant. We show that, at least for Einsteinian quantum gravity on AdS, such extremely weak gaugings are indeed in the Swampland: Consistency with AdS black hole thermodynamics requires the bulk gauge coupling $g^2$ not to vanish faster than $\sim\exp(\ell^{d-1}/G)$, where $\ell$ is the $AdS_{d+1}$ radius and $G$ is Newton's constant as we take the $G\rightarrow0$ limit. …
In this work we shall study a class of $f(R,ϕ)$ gravity models which during the inflationary era, which is the large curvature regime, result to an effective inflationary Lagrangian that contains a rescaled Einstein-Hilbert term $αR$ in the presence of a canonical minimally coupled scalar field. The dimensionless parameter $α$ is chosen to take values in the range $0<α<1$ and the main motivation for studying these rescaled Einstein-Hilbert $f(R,ϕ)$ gravities, is the fact that the rescaled action may render an otherwise incompatible canonical scalar field theory with the Swampland criteria, to …
The quantum gravity conjectures that aim to separate the landscape from the swampland among the low energy theories were originally formulated in the context of scalar field spaces spanned by moduli. Because these conjectures have implications for cosmology they have recently been considered in a more general context for scalar field theories with potentials, in particular inflation. From an effective field theory perspective the presence of a potential induces a natural metric that makes the distance measure $D_V$ along scalar field trajectories dependent on the potential. The present paper p…
The swampland program of delineating the space of effective field theories consistent with quantum gravity appears similar to the bootstrap program of delineating the space of quantum field theories consistent with conformal symmetry. With this in mind we rewrite the effective field theory of the Large Volume Scenario in AdS space solely in terms of $R_{AdS}$, in a form suitable for holographic analysis. This rewritten EFT takes a remarkably universal (and previously unnoticed) form, which is uniquely determined in the large-volume limit up to terms suppressed by $\mathcal{O} \left( 1/\ln R_{A…
The KKLT scenario in a warped throat, if consistent, provides a concrete counterexample to both the AdS scale separation and the dS swampland conjectures. First, we define and analyze the relevant effective field theory for the conifold modulus and the overall Kaehler modulus that both have exponentially small masses. The scalar potential still admits KKLT-like AdS and dS minima. Second, we critically analyze the reliability of the employed Wilsonian effective action by evaluating the masses of light modes localized in the warped throat. The resulting mass spectrum is discussed with respect to…
Recently, various swampland conjectures have been proposed that every UV complete effective field theory should satisfy. In particular, these deal with the properties of AdS and dS solutions arising in theories of quantum gravity. Mainly summarizing the results of our two previous articles arXiv:1902.07724 and arXiv:1910.10185, we confront the string theory based KKLT scenario with these conjectures and argue that if quantum vacua as in the KKLT construction indeed exist, some of the conjectures receive some log-corrections. Furthermore we point out some new aspects not contained in the aforem…
We conjecture and present evidence that any effective field theory coupled to gravity in flat space admits at most a finite number of fine tunings, depending on the amount of supersymmetry and spacetime dimension. In particular, this means that there are infinitely many non-trivial correlations between the allowed deformations of a given effective field theory in the gravitational context. Fine tuning of parameters allows us to obtain some consistent CFTs in the IR limit of gravitational theories. Related to finiteness of fine tunings, we conjecture that except for a finite number of CFTs, the…
We consider a class of exponential models of $f(R)$ gravity, in the presence of a canonical scalar field, for which at early times the effective Lagrangian of the theory becomes that of a rescaled canonical scalar field with the Einstein-Hilbert term becoming $\sim αR$, with $α$ a dimensionless constant. This rescaled Einstein-Hilbert scalar field theory at early times alters the inflationary phenomenology of well-known scalar field models of inflation, but more importantly, in the context of this rescaled theory, the Swampland criteria are easily satisfied, assuming that the scalar field is s…
Massive $U(1)$ gauge theories featuring parametrically light vectors are suspected to belong in the Swampland of consistent EFTs that cannot be embedded into a theory of quantum gravity. We study four-dimensional, chiral $U(1)$ gauge theories that appear anomalous over a range of energies up to the scale of anomaly-cancelling massive chiral fermions. We show that such theories require to be UV-completed at a finite cutoff below which a radial mode must appear, and cannot be decoupled -- a Stückelberg limit does not exist. When the infrared fermion spectrum contains a mixed $U(1)$-gravitational…
We consider the implications of the swampland conjectures on scalar-tensor theories defined in the Einstein frame in which the scalar interaction is screened. We show that chameleon models are not in the swampland provided the coupling to matter is larger than unity and the mass of the scalar field is much larger than the Hubble rate. We apply these conditions to the inverse power law chameleon and the symmetron. We then focus on the dilaton of string theory in the strong coupling limit, as defined in the string frame. We show that solar system tests of gravity imply that viable dilaton models…
The Swampland program aims to distinguish effective theories which can be completed into quantum gravity in the ultraviolet from those which cannot. This article forms an introduction to the field, assuming only a knowledge of quantum field theory and general relativity. It also forms a comprehensive review, covering the range of ideas that are part of the field, from the Weak Gravity Conjecture, through compactifications of String Theory, to the de Sitter conjecture.
We investigate the implications of string Swampland criteria for alternative theories of gravity. Even though this has not rigorously been proven, there is some evidence that exact de-Sitter solutions with a positive cosmological constant cannot be successfully embedded into string theory, and that the low energy effective field theories containing a scalar field $π$ with a potential $V$ in the habitable landscape should satisfy the Swampland criteria $|V'|/V\ge c\sim\mathcal{O}(1)$. As a paradigmatic class of modified gravity theories for inflation and dark energy, we consider the extensively…

We point out that the swampland conjectures, forbidding the presence of global symmetries and (meta-)stable de Sitter vacua within quantum gravity, pick up a dynamical axion for the electroweak SU(2) gauge theory as a natural candidate for the quintessence field. The potential energy of the electroweak axion provides an attractive candidate for the dark energy. We discuss constraints from the weak gravity conjecture, from the conjecture of no global symmetry, and from observations, which can be satisfied elegantly in a supersymmetric extension of the standard model.
It is widely believed and in part established that exact global symmetries are inconsistent with quantum gravity. One then expects that approximate global symmetries can be quantitatively constrained by quantum gravity or swampland arguments. We provide such a bound for an important class of global symmetries: Those arising from a gauged $U(1)$ with the vector made massive via Higgsing with an axion. The latter necessarily couples to instantons, and their action can be constrained, using both the electric and magnetic version of the axionic weak gravity conjecture, in terms of the cutoff of th…
For certain terms in the action, supersymmetry can forbid an infinite number of possible contributions. We study whether such protection can occur in quantum gravity even without sufficient supersymmetry. We focus on whether the superpotential can vanish exactly in four-dimensional N=1 theories, and if the prepotential can be exactly cubic in N=2 theories. We investigate these questions in string theory and find that for almost all known string constructions the corrections allowed by supersymmetry do occur. However, we do find some special settings where all the corrections can be proven to v…
We reconsider the problem of bounding higher derivative couplings in consistent weakly coupled gravitational theories, starting from general assumptions about analyticity and Regge growth of the S-matrix. Higher derivative couplings are expected to be of order one in the units of the UV cutoff. Our approach justifies this expectation and allows to prove precise bounds on the order one coefficients. Our main tool are dispersive sum rules for the S-matrix. We overcome the difficulties presented by the graviton pole by measuring couplings at small impact parameter, rather than in the forward limi…
In this note we show that models of natural inflation based on closed string axions are incompatible with the weak gravity conjecture (WGC). Specifically, we use T-duality in order to map the bounds on the charge-to-mass ratio of particles imposed by the WGC, to constraints on the ratio between instanton actions and axion decay constants. We use this connection to prove that if the WGC holds, even when multiple axions are present and mix with each other, one cannot have large axion decay constants while remaining in a regime of perturbative control. We also discuss the extension of the WGC to …
We consider effective theories with massive fields that have spins larger than or equal to two. We conjecture a universal cutoff scale on any such theory that depends on the lightest mass of such fields. This cutoff corresponds to the mass scale of an infinite tower of states, signalling the breakdown of the effective theory. The cutoff can be understood as the Weak Gravity Conjecture applied to the Stückelberg gauge field in the mass term of the high spin fields. A strong version of our conjecture applies even if the graviton itself is massive, so to massive gravity. We provide further eviden…
We explore the idea that large $N$, non-supersymmetric conformal field theories with a parametrically large gap to higher spin single-trace operators may be obtained as infrared fixed points of relevant double-trace deformations of superconformal field theories. After recalling the AdS interpretation and some potential pathologies of such flows, we introduce a concrete example that appears to avoid them: the ABJM theory at finite $k$, deformed by $\int\!{\cal O}^2$, where ${\cal O}$ is the superconformal primary in the stress-tensor multiplet. We address its relation to recent conjectures base…
We propose to sharpen the weak gravity conjecture by the statement that, except for BPS states in a supersymmetric theory, the gravitational force is strictly weaker than any electric force and provide a number of evidences for this statement. Our conjecture implies that any non-supersymmetric anti-de Sitter vacuum supported by fluxes must be unstable, as is the case for all known attempts at such holographic constructions.
We generalize the swampland criterion forbidding stable non-supersymmetric AdS vacua and propose a new swampland conjecture forbidding stable non-supersymmetric "locally AdS" warped throats. The conjecture is motivated by the properties of systems of fractional D3-branes at singularities, and can be used to rule out large classes of warped throats with supersymmetry breaking ingredients, and their possible application to de Sitter uplift. In particular, this allows to reinterpret the runaway instabilities of the gravity dual of fractional branes in the dP$_1$ theory, and to rule out warped thr…
We consider supergravity theories with 16 supercharges in Minkowski space with dimensions $d>3$. We argue that there is an upper bound on the number of massless modes in such theories depending on $d$. In particular we show that the rank of the gauge symmetry group $G$ in $d$ dimensions is bounded by $r_G\leq 26-d$. This in particular demonstrates that 4 dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ SYM theories with rank bigger than 22, despite being consistent and indeed finite before coupling to gravity, cannot be consistently coupled to ${\cal N}=4$ supergravity in Minkowski space and belong to the swampland. …
In this article, we want to check four inflation models, such as composite NJL inflation (NJLI), Glueball inflation(GI), super Yang-Mills inflation (SYMI), and Orientifold inflation (OI), with two conjectures of the swampland program: scalar weak gravity conjecture (SWGC) and strong scalar weak gravity conjecture (SSWGC) since all these models violate the dS swampland conjecture(DSC) but are compatible with further refining de Sitter swampland conjecture (FRDSSC) through manual adjustment of free parameters of the mentioned conjecture. We want to study the simultaneous compatibility of each mo…
