The standard design principle for quadrature formulas is that they should be exact for integrands of a given class, such as polynomials of a fixed degree. We show how this principle fails to predict the actual behavior in four cases: Newton-Cotes, Clenshaw-Curtis, Gauss-Legendre, and Gauss-Hermite quadrature. Three further examples are mentioned more briefly.
This paper investigates the role of quadrature exactness in the approximation scheme of hyperinterpolation. Constructing a hyperinterpolant of degree $n$ requires a positive-weight quadrature rule with exactness degree $2n$. We examine the behavior of such approximation when the required exactness degree $2n$ is relaxed to $n+k$ with $0<k\leq n$. Aided by the Marcinkiewicz--Zygmund inequality, we affirm that the $L^2$ norm of the exactness-relaxing hyperinterpolation operator is bounded by a constant independent of $n$, and this approximation scheme is convergent as $n\rightarrow\infty$ if $k$…
This paper focuses on the approximation of continuous functions on the unit sphere by spherical polynomials of degree $n$ via hyperinterpolation. Hyperinterpolation of degree $n$ is a discrete approximation of the $L^2$-orthogonal projection of degree $n$ with its Fourier coefficients evaluated by a positive-weight quadrature rule that exactly integrates all spherical polynomials of degree at most $2n$. This paper aims to bypass this quadrature exactness assumption by replacing it with the Marcinkiewicz--Zygmund property proposed in a previous paper. Consequently, hyperinterpolation can be con…
In a recent work, we developed three new compact numerical quadrature formulas for finite-range periodic supersingular integrals $I[f]=\intBar^b_a f(x)\,dx$, where $f(x)=g(x)/(x-t)^3,$ assuming that $g\in C^\infty[a,b]$ and $f(x)$ is $T$-periodic, $T=b-a$. With $h=T/n$, these numerical quadrature formulas read \begin{align*} \widehat{T}{}^{(0)}_n[f]&=h\sum^{n-1}_{j=1}f(t+jh) -\frac{π^2}{3}\,g'(t)\,h^{-1}+\frac{1}{6}\,g'''(t)\,h, \widehat{T}{}^{(1)}_n[f]&=h\sum^n_{j=1}f(t+jh-h/2) -π^2\,g'(t)\,h^{-1}, \widehat{T}{}^{(2)}_n[f]&=2h\sum^n_{j=1}f(t+jh-h/2)- \frac{h}{2}\sum^{2n}_{j=1}f(t+jh/2-h/4). \…
Methods for the computation of classical Gaussian quadrature rules are described which are effective both for small and large degree. These methods are reliable because the iterative computation of the nodes has guaranteed convergence, and they are fast due to their fourth-order convergence and its asymptotic exactness for an appropriate selection of the variables. For Gauss--Hermite and Gauss--Laguerre quadratures, local Taylor series can be used for computing efficiently the orthogonal polynomials involved, with exact initial values for the Hermite case and first values computed with a conti…
The present work is devoted to extension of the trapezoidal rule in the space $W_2^{(2,1)}$. The optimal quadrature formula is obtained by minimizing the error of the formula by coefficients at values of the first derivative of a integrand. Using the discrete analog of the operator $\frac{d^2}{dx^{2}}-1$ the explicit formulas for the coefficients of the optimal quadrature formula are obtained. Furthermore, it is proved that the obtained quadrature formula is exact for any function of the set $\mathbf{F}=\mathrm{span}\{1,x,e^{x},e^{-x}\}$. Finally, in the space $W_2^{(2,1)}$ the square of the n…
The present paper is devoted to construction of an optimal quadrature formula for approximation of Fourier integrals in the Hilbert space $W_2^{(1,0)}[a,b]$ of non-periodic, complex valued functions. Here the quadrature sum consists of linear combination of the given function values on uniform grid. The difference between integral and quadrature sum is estimated by the norm of the error functional. The optimal quadrature formula is obtained by minimizing the norm of the error functional with respect to coefficients. In addition, analytic formulas for optimal coefficients are obtained using the…
This paper deals with the construction of an optimal quadrature formula for the approximation of Fourier integrals in the Sobolev space $L_2^{(1)}[a,b]$ of non-periodic, complex valued functions which are square integrable with first order derivative. Here the quadrature sum consists of linear combination of the given function values in a uniform grid. The difference between the integral and the quadrature sum is estimated by the norm of the error functional. The optimal quadrature formula is obtained by minimizing the norm of the error functional with respect to coefficients. Analytic formula…
The numerical integration of an analytical function $f(x)$ using a finite set of equidistant points can be performed by quadrature formulas like the Newton-Cotes. Unlike Gaussian quadrature formulas however, higher-order Newton-Cotes formulas are not stable, limiting the usable order of such formulas. Existing work showed that by the use of orthogonal polynomials, stable high-order quadrature formulas with equidistant points can be developed. We improve upon such work by making use of (orthogonal) Gram polynomials and deriving an iterative algorithm, together allowing us to reduce the space-co…
We revisit the problem of extending quadrature formulas for general weight functions, and provide a generalization of Patterson's method for the constant weight function. The method can be used to compute a nested sequence of quadrature formulas for integration with respect to any continuous probability measure on the real line with finite moments. The advantages of the method include that it works directly with the moments of the underlying distribution, and that for distributions with rational moments the existence of the formulas can be verified by exact rational arithmetic.
The paper studies Sard's problem on construction of optimal quadrature formulas in the space $W_2^{(m,0)}$ by Sobolev's method. This problem consists of two parts: first calculating the norm of the error functional and then finding the minimum of this norm by coefficients of quadrature formulas. Here the norm of the error functional is calculated with the help of the extremal function. Then using the method of Lagrange multipliers the system of linear equations for coefficients of the optimal quadrature formulas in the space $W_2^{(m,0)}$ is obtained, moreover the existence and uniqueness of t…
We prove lower bounds for the worst case error of quadrature formulas that use given sample points $\X_n = \{ x_1, \dots , x_n \}$. We are mainly interested in optimal point sets $\X_n$, but also prove lower bounds that hold with high probability for sets of independently and uniformly distributed points. As a tool, we use a recent result (and extensions thereof) of Vybíral on the positive semi-definiteness of certain matrices related to the product theorem of Schur. The new technique also works for spaces of analytic functions where known methods based on decomposable kernels cannot be applie…
In the present paper, optimal quadrature formulas in the sense of Sard are constructed for numerical integration of the integral $\int_a^be^{2πiωx}φ(x)d x$ with $ω\in \mathbb{R}$ in the Sobolev space $L_2^{(m)}[a,b]$ of complex-valued functions which are square integrable with $m$-th order derivative. Here, using the discrete analogue of the differential operator $\frac{d^{2m}}{d x^{2m}}$, the explicit formulas for optimal coefficients are obtained. The order of convergence of the obtained optimal quadrature formula is $O(h^m)$. As an application, we implement the filtered back-projection (FBP…

In this paper we illustrate that paraorthogonality on the unit circle $\mathbb{T}$ is the counterpart to orthogonality on $\mathbb{R}$ when we are interested in the spectral properties. We characterize quasi-paraorthogonal polynomials on the unit circle as the analogues of the quasi-orthogonal polynomials on $\mathbb{R}$. We analyze the possibilities of preselecting some of its zeros, in order to build positive quadrature formulas with prefixed nodes and maximal domain of validity. These quadrature formulas on the unit circle are illustrated numerically.
In this work, we study a global quadrature scheme for analytic functions on compact intervals based on function values on quasi-uniform grids of quadrature nodes. In practice it is not always possible to sample functions at optimal nodes that give well-conditioned and quickly converging interpolatory quadrature rules at the same time. Therefore, we go beyond classical interpolatory quadrature by lowering the degree of the polynomial approximant and by applying auxiliary mapping functions that map the original quadrature nodes to more suitable fake nodes. More precisely, we investigate the comb…
We consider the computation of the matrix logarithm by using numerical quadrature. The efficiency of numerical quadrature depends on the integrand and the choice of quadrature formula. The Gauss--Legendre quadrature has been conventionally employed; however, the convergence could be slow for ill-conditioned matrices. This effect may stem from the rapid change of the integrand values. To avoid such situations, we focus on the double exponential formula, which has been developed to address integrands with endpoint singularity. In order to utilize the double exponential formula, we must determine…
The implementation of the finite element method for linear elliptic equations requires to assemble the stiffness matrix and the load vector. In general, the entries of this matrix-vector system are not known explicitly but need to be approximated by quadrature rules. If the coefficient functions of the differential operator or the forcing term are irregular, then standard quadrature formulas, such as the barycentric quadrature rule, may not be reliable. In this paper we investigate the application of two randomized quadrature formulas to the finite element method for such elliptic boundary val…
In the present paper the optimal quadrature formulas in the sense of Sard are constructed for numerical integration of the integral $\int_a^b e^{2πiωx}φ(x)d x$ with $ω\in \mathbb{R}$ in the Hilbert space $W_2^{(2,1)}[a,b]$ of complex-valued functions. Furthermore, the explicit expressions for coefficients of the constructed optimal quadrature formulas are obtained. At the end of the paper some numerical results are presented.
An error estimate for the Gauss-Lobatto quadrature formula for integration over the interval $[-1, 1]$, relative to the Jacobi weight function $w^{α,β}(t)=(1-t)^α(1+t)^β$, $α,β>-1$, is obtained. This estimate holds true for functions belonging to some Sobolev-type subspaces of the weighted space $L_{w^{α,β}}^1([-1,1])$.
Quadrature formulas (QFs) based on radial basis functions (RBFs) have become an essential tool for multivariate numerical integration of scattered data. Although numerous works have been published on RBF-QFs, their stability theory can still be considered as underdeveloped. Here, we strive to pave the way towards a more mature stability theory for global and function-independent RBF-QFs. In particular, we prove stability of these for compactly supported RBFs under certain conditions on the shape parameter and the data points. As an alternative to changing the shape parameter, we demonstrate ho…
We consider the numerical computation of finite-range singular integrals $$I[f]=\intBar^b_a f(x)\,dx,\quad f(x)=\frac{g(x)}{(x-t)^m},\quad m=1,2,\ldots,\quad a<t<b,$$ that are defined in the sense of Hadamard Finite Part, assuming that $g\in C^\infty[a,b]$ and $f(x)\in C^\infty(\mathbb{R}_t)$ is $T$-periodic with $\mathbb{R}_t=\mathbb{R}\setminus\{t+ kT\}^\infty_{k=-\infty}$, $T=b-a$. This paper is concerned with the introduction of Tikhonov regularization into least squares approximation scheme on $[-1,1]$ by orthonormal polynomials, in order to handle noisy data. This scheme includes interpolation and hyperinterpolation as special cases. With Gauss quadrature points employed as nodes, coefficients of the approximation polynomial with respect to given basis are derived in an entry-wise closed form. Under interpolatory conditions, the solution to the regularized approximation problem is rewritten in forms of two kinds of barycentric interpolation formulae, by introducing on…
