The $\mathbb{Z}$-genus of a link $L$ in $S^3$ is the minimal genus of a locally flat, embedded, connected surface in $D^4$ whose boundary is $L$ and with the fundamental group of the complement infinite cyclic. We characterise the $\mathbb{Z}$-genus of boundary links in terms of their single variable Blanchfield forms, and we present some applications. In particular, we show that a variant of the shake genus of a knot, the $\mathbb{Z}$-shake genus, equals the $\mathbb{Z}$-genus of the knot.
The Turaev genus of a link can be thought of as a way of measuring how non-alternating a link is. A link is Turaev genus zero if and only if it is alternating, and in this viewpoint, links with large Turaev genus are very non-alternating. In this paper, we study Turaev genus one links, a class of links which includes almost alternating links. We prove that the Khovanov homology of a Turaev genus one link is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}$ in at least one of its extremal quantum gradings. As an application, we compute or nearly compute the maximal Thurston Bennequin number of a Turaev genus one link…
We define Casson-Gordon sigma-invariants for links and give a lower bound of the slice genus of a link in terms of these invariants. We study as an example a family of two component links of genus h and show that their slice genus is h, whereas the Murasugi-Tristram inequality does not obstruct this link from bounding an annulus in the 4-ball.
In this paper, we enumerate the number of oriented rational knots and the number of oriented rational links with any given crossing number and minimum genus. This allows us to obtain a precise formula for the average minimal genus of oriented rational knots and links with any given crossing number.
In this paper we write explicitly the open book decompositions of links of quotient surface singularities supporting the corresponding unique Milnor fillable contact structure. The page-genus of these Milnor open books are minimal among all Milnor open books supporting the same contact structure. We also investigate whether the Milnor genus is equal to the support genus for links of quotient surface singularities. We show that for many types of the quotient surface singularities the Milnor genus is equal to the support genus. In the remaining cases we are able to find a small upper bound for t…
The splitting number of a link is the minimum number of crossing changes between distinct components that is required to convert the link into a split link. We provide a bound on the splitting number in terms of the four-genus of related knots.
We classify link diagrams with Turaev genus one and two in terms of an alternating tangle structure of the link diagram. The proof involves surgery along simple closed curves on the Turaev surface, called cutting loops, which have corresponding cutting arcs that are visible on the planar link diagram. These also provide new obstructions for a link diagram on a surface to come from the Turaev surface algorithm.
For each three-bridge link of a certain form, we construct a taut Seifert surface for the link and establish whether the link is fibred. Using this, we also give the genus and fibredness of satellite knots whose pattern is constructed from a two-component two-bridge link in the case not addressed by work of Hirasawa and Murasugi.
A handlebody link is a union of handlebodies of positive genus embedded in 3-space, which generalizes the notion of links in classical knot theory. In this paper, we consider handlebody links with one genus 2 handlebody and $n-1$ solid tori, $n>1$. Our main result is the complete classification of such handlebody links with six crossings or less, up to ambient isotopy.
We introduce a new class of links for which we give a lower bound for the slice genus $g_*$, using the generalized Rasmussen invariant. We show that this bound, in some cases, allows one to compute $g_*$ exactly; in particular, we compute $g_*$ for torus links. We also study another link invariant: the strong slice genus $g_*^*$. Studying the behaviour of a specific type of cobordisms in Lee homology, a lower bound for $g_*^*$ is also given.
We give a new proof that the Levine-Tristram signatures of a link give lower bounds for the minimal sum of the genera of a collection of oriented, locally flat, disjointly embedded surfaces that the link can bound in the 4-ball. We call this minimal sum the 4-genus of the link. We also extend a theorem of Cochran, Friedl and Teichner to show that the 4-genus of a link does not increase under infection by a string link, which is a generalised satellite construction, provided that certain homotopy triviality conditions hold on the axis curves, and that enough Milnor's invariants of the infection…
Let $L$ be a prime alternating link with $n$ crossings. We show that for each fixed $g$, the number of genus $g$ incompressible surfaces in the complement of $L$ is bounded by a polynomial in $n$. Previous bounds were exponential in $n$.
We show that the triple-crossing number of any knot is greater or equal to twice its (canonical) genus and we show an even stronger bound in the case of links. As an application we show that this bound is strong enough to obtain the triple-crossing numbers of all torus knots, and of many more knots and their connected sums.
We prove that the hyperelliptic mapping class group of a nonorientable surface of genus $g\geq 4$ has a faithful linear representation of dimension $g^2-1$ over $\mathbb{R}$.
We explicitly construct a genus-$3$ Lefschetz fibration over $\mathbb{S}^{2}$ whose total space is $\mathbb{T}^{2}\times \mathbb{S}^{2}\# 6\overline{\mathbb{C} P^{2}}$ using the monodromy of Matsumoto's genus-$2$ Lefschetz fibration. We then construct more genus-$3$ Lefschetz fibrations whose total spaces are exotic minimal symplectic $4$-manifolds $3 \mathbb{C} P^{2} \# q\overline{\mathbb{C} P^{2}}$ for $q=13,\ldots,19$. We also generalize our construction to get genus-$3k$ Lefschetz fibration structure on the $4$-manifold $Σ_{k}\times \mathbb{S}^{2}\# 6\overline{\mathbb{C} P^{2}}$ using the …
We construct an infinite family of topologically slice 2--component boundary links $\ell_i$, none of which is smoothly concordant to a split link, such that $g_4(\ell_i)=i$.
We discuss links in thickened surfaces. We define the Khovanov-Lipshitz-Sarkar stable homotopy type and the Steenrod square for the homotopical Khovanov homology of links in thickened surfaces with genus$>1$. A surface means a closed oriented surface unless otherwise stated. Of course, a surface may or may not be the sphere. A thickened surface means a product manifold of a surface and the interval. A link in a thickened surface (respectively, a 3-manifold) means a submanifold of a thickened surface (respectively, a 3-manifold) which is diffeomorphic to a disjoint collection of circles. Our Kh…
In this article, we construct a crystallization of the mapping torus of some (PL) homeomorphisms $f:M \to M$ for a certain class of PL-manifolds $M$. These yield upper bounds for gem-complexity and regular genus of a large class of PL-manifolds. The bound for the regular genus is sharp for the mapping torus of some (PL) homeomorphisms $f:M \to M$, where $M$ is $\mathbb{RP}^2$, $\mathbb{RP}^2\#\mathbb{RP}^2$, $\mathbb{S}^1\times \mathbb{S}^1$, $\mathbb{RP}^3$, $\mathbb{S}^{2} \times \mathbb{S}^1$, $\mathbb{S}^{\hspace{.2mm}2} \mbox{$\times \hspace{-2.6mm}_{-}$} \, \mathbb{S}^{\hspace{.1mm}1}$ o…
We show that the difference between the topological 4-genus of a knot and the minimal genus of a surface bounded by that knot that can be decomposed into a smooth concordance followed by an algebraically simple locally flat surface can be arbitrarily large. This extends work of Hedden-Livingston-Ruberman showing that there are topologically slice knots which are not smoothly concordant to any knot with trivial Alexander polynomial.
A virtual link may be defined as an equivalence class of diagrams, or alternatively as a stable equivalence class of links in thickened surfaces. We prove that a minimal crossing virtual link diagram has minimal genus across representatives of the stable equivalence class. This is achieved by constructing a new parity theory for virtual links. As corollaries, we prove that the crossing, bridge, and ascending numbers of a classical link do not decrease when it is regarded as a virtual link. This extends corresponding results in the case of virtual knots due to Manturov and Chernov.
The Turaev genus and dealternating number of a link are two invariants that measure how far away a link is from alternating. We determine the Turaev genus of a torus knot with five or fewer strands either exactly or up to an error of at most one. We also determine the dealternating number of a torus knot with five or fewer strand up to an error of at most two. Additional bounds are given on the Turaev genus and dealternating number of torus links with five or fewer strands and on some infinite families of torus links on six strands.
We prove that the genus of the Turaev surface of a link diagram is determined by a graph whose vertices correspond to the boundary components of the maximal alternating regions of the link diagram. Furthermore, we use these graphs to classify link diagrams whose Turaev surface has genus one or two, and we prove that similar classification theorems exist for all genera.
The open book decompositions of the 3-sphere whose pages are pairs of pants have been fully understood for some time, through the lens of contact geometry. The purpose of this note is to exhibit a purely topological derivation of the classification of such open books, in terms of the links that form their bindings and the corresponding monodromies. We construct all of the links and their pair-of-pants fiber surfaces from the simplest example, a connected sum of two Hopf links, through performing (generalized) Stallings twists. Then, by applying the now-classical theory of genus two Heegaard di…
In this paper, we characterize closed incompressible surfaces of genus two in the complements of 3-bridge knots and links. This characterization includes that of essential 2-string tangle decompositions for 3-bridge knots and links.
A derivative of an algebraically slice knot $K$ is an oriented link disjointly embedded in a Seifert surface of $K$ such that its homology class forms a basis for a metabolizer $H$ of $K$. We show that for a genus three algebraically slice knot $K$, the set $\{ \barμ_{\{γ_1,γ_2,γ_3\}}(123) - \barμ_{\{γ'_1,γ'_2,γ'_3\}}(123)| \{γ_1,γ_2,γ_3\}$ and $\{γ'_1,γ'_2,γ'_3\}$ are derivatives of $K$ associated with a metabolizer $H\}$ contains $n\cdot \mathbb{Z}$ where $n$ is determined by a Seifert form of $K$ and a metabolizer $H$. As a corollary, we show that it is possible to realize any integer as a …
A classification of spanning surfaces for alternating links is provided up to genus, orientability, and a new invariant that we call aggregate slope. That is, given an alternating link, we determine all possible combinations of genus, orientability, and aggregate slope that a surface spanning that link can have. To this end, we describe a straightforward algorithm, much like Seifert's Algorithm, through which to construct certain spanning surfaces called layered surfaces. A particularly important subset of these will be what we call basic layered surfaces. We can alter these surface by perform…
Our goal is to systematically compute the $\mathbb{C}P^2$-genus of all prime knots up to 8-crossings. We obtain upper bounds on the $\mathbb{C}P^2$-genus via coherent band surgery. We obtain lower bounds by obstructing homological degrees of potential slice discs. The obstructions are pulled from a variety of sources in low-dimensional topology and adapted to $\mathbb{C}P^2$. There are 27 prime knots and distinct mirrors up to 7-crossings. We now know the $\mathbb{C}P^2$-genus of all but 2 of these knots. There are 64 prime knots and distinct mirrors up to 8-crossings. We now know the $\mathbb…
Suppose a genus two handlebody is removed from a 3-manifold M and then a single meridian of the handlebody is restored. The result is a knot or link complement in M and it is natural to ask whether geometric properties of the link complement say something about the meridian that was restored. Here we consider what the relation must be between two not necessarily disjoint meridians so that restoring each of them gives a trivial knot or a split link.
It is known that the minimal degree of the Jones polynomial of a positive knot is equal to its genus, and the minimal coefficient is 1. We extend this result to almost positive links and partly identify the 3 following coefficients for special types of positive links. We also give counterexamples to the Jones polynomial-ribbon genus conjectures for a quasipositive knot. Then we show that the Alexander polynomial completely detects the minimal genus and fiber property of canonical Seifert surfaces associated to almost positive (and almost alternating) link diagrams.
We show that the only closed 4-manifolds admitting genus two trisections are $S^2 \times S^2$ and connected sums of $S^1 \times S^3$, $\mathbb{CP}^2$, and $\overline{\mathbb{CP}}^2$ with two summands. Moreover, each of these manifolds admits a unique genus two trisection up to diffeomorphism. The proof relies heavily on the combinatorics of genus two Heegaard diagrams of $S^3$. As a corollary, we classify two-component links contained in a genus two Heegaard surface for $S^3$ with a surface-sloped cosmetic Dehn surgery.
We prove the compactness of self-shrinkers in $\mathbb R^3$ with bounded entropy and fixed genus. As a corollary, we show that numbers of ends of such surfaces are uniformly bounded by the entropy and genus.
We refine prior bounds on how the multivariable signature and the nullity of a link change under link cobordisms. The formula generalizes a series of results about the 4-genus having their origins in the Murasugi-Tristram inequality, and at the same time extends previously known results about concordance invariance of the signature to a bigger set of allowed variables. Finally, we show that the multivariable signature and nullity are also invariant under $0.5$-solvable cobordism.
We show that nontrivial classical pretzel knots L(p,q,r) are hyperbolic with eight exceptions which are torus knots. We find Conway polynomials of n-pretzel links using a new computation tree. As applications, we compute the genera of n-pretzel links using these polynomials and find the basket number of pretzel links by showing that the genus and the canonical genus of a pretzel link are the same.
Murasugi sums can be defined as readily for Morse maps to the circle of (arbitrary) link complements in the 3-sphere as for fibrations over the circle of (fibered) link complements in the 3-sphere. As one application, I show that if a knot K has free genus m, then there is a Morse map from its complement to the circle (representing the relative homology class of a Seifert surface for K) with no more than 4m critical points.
For an oriented virtual link, L.H. Kauffman defined the f-polynomial (Jones polynomial). The supporting genus of a virtual link diagram is the minimal genus of a surface in which the diagram can be embedded. In this paper we show that the span of the f-polynomial of an alternating virtual link L is determined by the number of crossings of any alternating diagram of L and the supporting genus of the diagram. It is a generalization of Kauffman-Murasugi-Thistlethwaite's theorem. We also prove a similar result for a virtual link diagram that is obtained from an alternating virtual link diagram by …
This article deals with equivalence of links in 3-manifolds of Heegaard genus 2. Starting from a description of such a manifold introduced by Casali et al., that uses 6-tuples of integers and determines a Heegaard decomposition of the manifold, we construct an algorithm (implemented in c++) which allows to find the words in $B_{2, 2n}$, the braid group on 2n strands of a surface of genus 2, that realizes the plat-equivalence for links in that manifold. In this way we extend to the case of genus 2 the result obtained by Cattabriga et al. for genus 1 manifolds. We describe explicitly the words f…
The aim of this article is to detect new classes of quasi-alternating links. Quasi-alternating links are a natural generalization of alternating links. Their knot Floer and Khovanov homology are particularly easy to compute. Since knot Floer homology detects the genus of a knot as well as whether a knot is fibered, as provided bounds on unknotting number and slice genus, characterization of quasi-alternating links becomes an interesting open problem. We show that there exist classes of non-alternating Montesinos links, which are quasi-alternating.
Simple crystallizations are edge-coloured graphs representing PL 4-manifolds with the property that the 1-skeleton of the associated triangulation equals the 1-skeleton of a 4-simplex. In the present paper, we prove that any (simply-connected) PL $4$-manifold $M$ admitting a simple crystallization admits a special handlebody decomposition, too; equivalently, $M$ may be represented by a framed link yielding $\mathbb S^3$, with exactly $β_2(M)$ components ($β_2(M)$ being the second Betti number of $M$). As a consequence, the regular genus of $M$ is proved to be the double of $β_2(M)$. Moreover, …
In this article we construct a family of genus two Lefschetz fibrations $f_{n}: X_{θ_n} \rightarrow \mathbb{S}^{2}$ with $e(X_{θ_n})=11$, $b^{+}_{2}(X_{θ_n})=1$, and $c_1^{2}(X_{θ_n})=1$ by applying a single lantern substitution to the twisted fiber sums of Matsumoto's genus two Lefschetz fibration over $\mathbb{S}^2$. Moreover, we compute the fundamental group of $X_{θ_n}$ and show that it is isomorphic to the trivial group if $n = -3$ or $-1$, $\mathbb{Z}$ if $n =-2$, and $\mathbb{Z}_{|n+2|}$ for all integers $n\neq -3, -2, -1$. Also, we prove that our fibrations admit $-2$ section, show tha…
We prove that in the complement of a highly twisted link, all closed, essential, meridionally incompressible surfaces must have high genus. The genus bound is proportional to the number of crossings per twist region. A similar result holds for surfaces with meridional boundary: such a surface either has large negative Euler characteristic, or is an n-punctured sphere visible in the diagram.
We analyze the orbifolds that can be obtained as quotients of hyperbolic 3-manifolds admitting a Heegaard splitting of genus two by their orientation preserving isometry groups. The genus two hyperbolic 3-manifolds are exactly the hyperbolic 2-fold branched coverings of 3-bridge links. If the 3-bridge link is a knot, we prove that the underlying topological space of the quotient orbifold is either the 3-sphere or a lens space and we describe the combinatorial setting of the singular set for each possible isometry group. In the case of 3-bridge links with two or three components, the situation …
We discuss an obstruction to a knot being smoothly slice that comes from minimum-genus bounds on smoothly embedded surfaces in definite 4-manifolds. As an example, we provide an alternate proof of the fact that the (2,1)-cable of the figure eight knot is not smoothly slice, as shown by Dai--Kang--Mallick--Park--Stoffregen in 2022. The main technical input of our argument consists of gauge-theoretic obstructions to smooth small-genus surfaces representing certain homology classes in $\mathbb{CP}^2\#\mathbb{CP}^2$ proved by Bryan in the 1990s.
The Morse-Novikov number MN(L) of an oriented link L in the 3-sphere is the minimum number of critical points of a Morse map from the complement of L in the 3-sphere to the circle representing the class of a Seifert surface for L (e.g., the Morse-Novikov number of L is zero if and only if L is fibered). We develop various constructions of Morse maps (Milnor maps, Stallings twists, splicing along a link which is a closed braid with respect to a Morse map, Murasugi sums, cutting a Morse map along an arc on a page) and use them to bound Morse-Novikov numbers from above in terms of other knot and …
We construct a geometrically self-similar Cantor set $X$ of genus $2$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$. This construction is the first for which the local genus is shown to be $2$ at every point of $X$. As an application, we construct, also for the first time, a uniformly quasiregular mapping $f:\mathbb{R}^3 \to \mathbb{R}^3$ for which the Julia set $J(f)$ is a genus $2$ Cantor set.
In this paper we consider all orientation-preserving $\mathbb{Z}_{4}$-actions on $3$-dimensional handlebodies $V_g$ of genus $g>0$. We study the graph of groups $(Γ($v$),\mathbf{G(v)})$, which determines a handlebody orbifold $V(Γ($v$),{\mathbf{G(v)}})\simeq{V_g}/\mathbb{Z}_{4}$. This algebraic characterization is used to enumerate the total number of $\mathbb{Z}_{4}$ group actions on such handlebodies, up to equivalence.
In this paper, we show that any topological knot or link in $S^1 \times S^2$ sits on a planar page of an open book decomposition whose monodromy is a product of positive Dehn twists. As a consequence, any knot or link type in $S^1 \times S^2$ has a Legendrian representative having support genus zero. We also show this holds for some knots and links in the lens spaces $L(p,1)$.
In this paper, we classify relatively minimal genus-$1$ holomorphic Lefschetz pencils up to smooth isomorphism. We first show that such a pencil is isomorphic to either the pencil on $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$ of bi-degree $(2,2)$ or a blow-up of the pencil on $\mathbb{P}^2$ of degree $3$, provided that no fiber of a pencil contains an embedded sphere. (Note that one can easily classify genus-$1$ Lefschetz pencils with an embedded sphere in a fiber.) We further determine the monodromy factorizations of these pencils and show that the isomorphism class of a blow-up of the pencil on $\mat…
