We discuss links in thickened surfaces. We define the Khovanov-Lipshitz-Sarkar stable homotopy type and the Steenrod square for the homotopical Khovanov homology of links in thickened surfaces with genus$>1$.
A surface means a closed oriented surface unless otherwise stated. Of course, a surface may or may not be the sphere. A thickened surface means a product manifold of a surface and the interval. A link in a thickened surface (respectively, a 3-manifold) means a submanifold of a thickened surface (respectively, a 3-manifold) which is diffeomorphic to a disjoint collection of circles.
Our Khovanov-Lipshitz-Sarkar stable homotopy type and our Steenrod square of links in thickened surfaces with genus$>1$ are stronger than the homotopical Khovanov homology of links in thickened surfaces with genus$>1$.
It is the first meaningful Khovanov-Lipshitz-Sarkar stable homotopy type of links in 3-manifolds other than the 3-sphere.
We point out that our theory has a different feature in the torus case.
We define a second Steenrod square for virtual links, which is stronger than Khovanov homology for virtual links, toward constructing Khovanov-Lipshitz-Sarkar stable homotopy type for virtual links. This induces the first meaningful nontrivial example of the second Steenrod square operator on the Khovanov homology for links in a 3-manifold other than the 3-sphere.
Lipshitz and Sarkar recently introduced a space-level refinement of Khovanov homology. This refinement induces a Steenrod square operation $\Sq^2$ on Khovanov homology which they describe explicitly. This paper presents some computations of $\Sq^2$. In particular, we give examples of links with identical integral Khovanov homology but with distinct Khovanov homotopy types.
Inspired by work of Lipshitz-Sarkar, we show that the module structure on link Floer homology detects split links. Using results of Ni, Alishahi-Lipshitz, and Lipshitz-Sarkar, we establish an analogous detection result for sutured Floer homology.
We show that there are prime knots so that the Steenrod operations of Lipshitz and Sarkar arXiv:1204.5776 are non trivial on their Khovanov homology. This answers a question posed by Lipshitz and Sarkar in their paper arXiv:1709.03602. We then go on to show that there are hyperbolic and satellite knots so that the Steenrod operations are non trivial on their Khovanov homology.
The Lipshitz-Sarkar Steenrod operations on (even) Khovanov homology are incompatible with Szabó's geometric spectral sequence. Obstructions to integral lifting and spectrification are observed.
For a link in a thickened annulus $A \times I$, we define a $\mathbb{Z} \oplus \mathbb{Z} \oplus \mathbb{Z}$ filtration on Sarkar-Seed-Szabó's perturbation of the geometric spectral sequence. The filtered chain homotopy type is an invariant of the isotopy class of the annular link. From this, we define a two-dimensional family of annular link invariants and study their behavior under cobordisms. In the case of annular links obtained from braid closures, we obtain a necessary condition for braid quasipositivity and a sufficient condition for right-veeringness, as well as Bennequin-type inequali…
In this article we introduce a family of transverse invariants arising from the deformations of Khovanov homology. This family includes the invariants introduced by Plamenevskaya and by Lipshitz, Ng, and Sarkar. Then, we investigate the invariants arising from Bar-Natan's deformation. These invariants, called $β$-invariants, are essentially equivalent to Lipshitz, Ng, and Sarkar's invariants $ψ^\pm$. From the $β$-invariants we extract two non-negative integers which are transverse invariants (the $c$-invariants). Finally, we give several conditions which imply the non-effectiveness of the $c$-…
There exists a simplified Bar-Natan Khovanov complex for open 2-braids. The Khovanov cohomology of a knot diagram made by gluing tangles of this type is therefore often amenable to calculation. We lift this idea to the level of the Lipshitz-Sarkar stable homotopy type and use it to make new computations. Similarly, there exists a simplified Khovanov-Rozansky sl_n complex for open 2-braids with oppositely oriented strands and an even number of crossings. Diagrams made by gluing tangles of this type are called matched diagrams, and knots admitting matched diagrams are called bipartite knots. To …
The Lipshitz-Sarkar stable homotopy link invariant defines Steenrod squares on the Khovanov cohomology of a link. Lipshitz-Sarkar constructed an algorithm for computing the first two Steenrod squares. We develop a new algorithm which implements the flow category simplification techniques previously defined by the authors and Dan Jones. We give a purely combinatorial approach to calculating the second Steenrod square and Bockstein homomorphisms in Khovanov cohomology, and flow categories in general. The new method has been implemented in a computer program by the third author and applied to lar…
The structure of the Khovanov homology of $(n,m)$ torus links has been extensively studied. In particular, Marko Stosic proved that the homology groups stabilize as $m\rightarrow\infty$. We show that the Khovanov homotopy types of $(n,m)$ torus links, as constructed by Robert Lipshitz and Sucharit Sarkar, also become stably homotopy equivalent as $m\rightarrow\infty$. We provide an explicit bound on values of $m$ beyond which the stabilization begins. As an application, we give new examples of torus links with non-trivial $Sq^2$ action.
We describe stable cup-i products on the cochain complex with $F^2$ coefficients of any augmented semi-simplicial object in the Burnside category. An example of such an object is the Khovanov functor of Lawson, Lipshitz and Sarkar. Thus we obtain explicit formulas for cohomology operations on the Khovanov homology of any link.
We show that the spectrum constructed by Everitt and Turner as a possible Khovanov homotopy type is a product of Eilenberg-MacLane spaces and is thus determined by Khovanov homology. By using the Dold-Thom functor it can therefore be obtained from the Khovanov homotopy type constructed by Lipshitz and Sarkar.
Given an $m$-periodic link $L\subset S^3$, we show that the Khovanov spectrum $\mathcal{X}_L$ constructed by Lipshitz and Sarkar admits a homology group action. We relate the Borel cohomology of $\mathcal{X}_L$ to the equivariant Khovanov homology of $L$ constructed by the second author. The action of Steenrod algebra on the cohomology of $\mathcal{X}_L$ gives an extra structure of the periodic link. Another consequence of our construction is an alternative proof of the localization formula for Khovanov homology, obtained first by Stoffregen and Zhang. By applying Dwyer-Wilkerson theorem we ex…
In this paper, we discuss two topics: first, we show how to convert 1+1-topological quantum field theories valued in symmetric bimonoidal categories into stable homotopical data, using a machinery by Elmendorf and Mandell. Then, we discuss, in this framework, two recent results (independent of each other) on refinements of Khovanov homology: our refinement into a module over the connective k-theory spectrum and a stronger result by Lipshitz and Sarkar refining Khovanov homology into a stable homotopy type.
We construct a stable homotopy refinement of quantum annular homology, a link homology theory introduced by Beliakova, Putyra and Wehrli. For each $r\geq 2$ we associate to an annular link $L$ a naive $\mathbb{Z}/r\mathbb{Z}$-equivariant spectrum whose cohomology is isomorphic to the quantum annular homology of $L$ as modules over $\mathbb{Z}[\mathbb{Z}/r\mathbb{Z}]$. The construction relies on an equivariant version of the Burnside category approach of Lawson, Lipshitz and Sarkar. The quotient under the cyclic group action is shown to recover the stable homotopy refinement of annular Khovanov…
We extend Lipshitz-Sarkar's definition of a stable homotopy type associated to a link L whose cohomology recovers the Khovanov cohomology of L. Given an assignment c (called a coloring) of positive integer to each component of a link L, we define a stable homotopy type X_col(L_c) whose cohomology recovers the c-colored Khovanov cohomology of L. This goes via Rozansky's definition of a categorified Jones-Wenzl projector P_n as an infinite torus braid on n strands. We then observe that Cooper-Krushkal's explicit definition of P_2 also gives rise to stable homotopy types of colored links (using t…
We pursue the analogy of a framed flow category with the flow data of a Morse function. In classical Morse theory, Morse functions can sometimes be locally altered and simplified by the Morse moves. These moves include the Whitney trick which removes two oppositely framed flowlines between critical points of adjacent index and handle cancellation which removes two critical points connected by a single flowline. A framed flow category is a way of encoding flow data such as that which may arise from the flowlines of a Morse function or of a Floer functional. The Cohen-Jones-Segal construction as…
Framed flow categories were introduced by Cohen-Jones-Segal as a way of encoding the flow data associated to a Floer functional. A framed flow category gives rise to a CW-complex with one cell for each object of the category. The idea is that the Floer invariant should take the form of the stable homotopy type of the resulting complex, recovering the Floer cohomology as its singular cohomology. Such a framed flow category was produced, for example, by Lipshitz-Sarkar from the input of a knot diagram, resulting in a stable homotopy type generalizing Khovanov cohomology. In this paper we give mo…
