Let G be the pro-algebraic group attached to the tannakian category of polarizable rational Hodge structures. We show that the quotient of G by its derived group is the Serre group, the derived group of G is the simply connected covering of the adjoint group of G, and that the adjoint group G is a product of specific simple algebraic groups. As the Mumford--Tate groups are exactly the algebraic quotients of G, this also describes them.
The algebraic Sato-Tate conjecture was initially introduced by Serre and then discussed by Banaszak and Kedlaya. This note shows that the Mumford-Tate conjecture for an abelian variety A implies the algebraic Sato-Tate conjecture for A. The relevance of this result lies mainly in the fact that the list of known cases of the Mumford-Tate conjecture was up to now a lot longer than the list of known cases of the algebraic Sato-Tate conjecture.
We prove the Tate conjecture for divisor classes and the Mumford-Tate conjecture for the cohomology in degree 2 for varieties with $h^{2,0}=1$ over a finitely generated field of characteristic 0, under a mild assumption on their moduli. As an application of this general result, we prove the Tate and Mumford-Tate conjectures for some classes of algebraic surfaces with $p_g=1$.
We classify the possible Mumford-Tate groups of polarizable rational Hodge structures. Along the way we deduce a polarized Hodge-theoretic analogue of a conjectural property of motivic Galois groups suggested by Serre.
In this article we study the (cohomological) Hodge conjecture for singular varieties. We prove the conjecture for simple normal crossing varieties that can be embedded in a family where the Mumford-Tate group remains constant. We show how to produce such families. Furthermore, we show for varieties with worse singularities the conjecture can be expressed solely in terms of the algebraic classes.
We use perfectoid spaces associated to abelian varieties and Siegel moduli spaces to study torsion points and ordinary CM points. We reprove the Manin-Mumford conjecture i.e. Raynaud's theorem. We also prove the Tate-Voloch conjecture for a product of Siegel moduli spaces namely ordinary CM points outside a closed subvariety can not be p-adically too close to it.
We study the Mumford--Tate conjecture for hyperkähler varieties. We show that the full conjecture holds for all varieties deformation equivalent to either an Hilbert scheme of points on a K3 surface or to O'Grady's ten dimensional example, and all of their self-products. For an arbitrary hyperkähler variety whose second Betti number is not 3, we prove the Mumford--Tate conjecture in every codimension under the assumption that the Künneth components in even degree of its André motive are abelian. Our results extend a theorem of André.
Let X be a Mumford-Tate variety, i.e., a quotient of a Mumford-Tate domain D by a discrete subgroup. Mumford-Tate varieties are generalizations of Shimura varieties. We define the notion of a special subvariety Y in X (of Shimura type), and formulate necessary criteria for Y to be special. Our method consists in looking at finitely many compactified special curves C_i in Y, and testing whether the inclusion of the union of all C_i in Y satisfies certain properties. One of them is the so-called relative proportionality condition. In this paper, we give a new formulation of this numerical criter…
In this paper we prove the Mumford-Tate conjecture in degree 2 for the product of an abelian surface $A$ and a K3 surface $X$ over a finitely generated field $K \subset \mathbb{C}$. The Mumford-Tate conjecture is a precise way of saying that the Hodge structure on singular cohomology conveys the same information as the Galois representation on $\ell$-adic étale cohomology. To make this precise, let $G_{\mathrm{B}}$ be the Mumford-Tate group of the Hodge structure $H^{2}_{\text{sing}}(A(\mathbb{C}) \times X(\mathbb{C}), \mathbb{Q})$. Let $G_{\ell}^{\circ}$ be the connected component of the iden…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over a finitely generated field $K$ of characteristic~$0$ and fix an embedding $K \subset \mathbb{C}$. The Mumford--Tate conjecture is a precise way of saying that certain extra structure on the $\ell$-adic étale cohomology groups of~$X$ (namely, a Galois representation) and certain extra structure on the singular cohomology groups of~$X$ (namely, a Hodge structure) convey the same information. The main result of this paper says that if $A_1$ and~$A_2$ are abelian varieties (or abelian motives) over~$K$, and the Mumford--Tate conjecture holds for both~$A_…
The family of all mixed Hodge structures on a given rational vector space $M_\mathbb{Q}$ with a fixed weight filtration $W_\cdot$ and a fixed associated graded Hodge structure $Gr^WM$ is naturally in a one to one correspondence with a complex affine space. We study the unipotent radical of the very general Mumford-Tate group of the family. We do this by using general Tannakian results which relate the unipotent radical of the fundamental group of an object in a filtered Tannakian category to the extension classes of the object coming from the filtration. Our main result shows that if $Gr^WM$ i…
Let A be a complex abelian variety and G its Mumford--Tate group. Supposing that the simple abelian subvarieties of A are pairwise non-isogenous, we find a lower bound for the rank of G, which is a little less than log_2 dim A. If we suppose that End A is commutative, then we show that rk G >= log_2 dim A + 2, and this latter bound is sharp. We also obtain the same results for the rank of the l-adic monodromy group of an abelian variety defined over a number field. ----- Soit A une variété abélienne complexe et G son groupe de Mumford--Tate. En supposant que les sous variétés abéliennes simple…
We prove the Mumford-Tate conjecture for those abelian varieties over number fields, whose simple factors of their adjoint Mumford-Tate groups have over $\dbR$ certain (products of) non-compact factors. In particular, we prove this conjecture for the orthogonal case ($B_n$ and $D_n^{\dbR}$ Shimura types). We construct embeddings of Shimura varieties of (whose adjoints are of prescribed abelian type) into unitary Shimura varieties. We also prove two general theorems involving Frobenius tori of abelian varieties over number fields.
We investigate to what extent an abelian variety over a finite field can be lifted to one in characteristic zero with small Mumford-Tate group. We prove that supersingular abelian surfaces, respectively threefolds, can be lifted to ones isogenous to a square, respectively product, of elliptic curves. On the other hand, we show that supersingular abelian threefolds cannot be lifted to one isogenous to the cube of an elliptic curve over the Witt vectors.
Let K be a number field and A an abelian variety over K. We are interested in the following conjecture of Morita: if the Mumford-Tate group of A does not contain unipotent Q-rational points then A has potentially good reduction at any discrete place of K. The Mumford-Tate group is an object of analytical nature whereas having good reduction is an arithmetical notion, linked to the ramification of Galois representations. This conjecture has been proved by Morita for particular abelian varieties with many endomorphisms (called of PEL type). Noot obtained results for abelian varieties without non…
We study certain spaces of nilpotent orbits in Hodge domains, and treat a number of examples. More precisely, we compute the Mumford-Tate group of the limit mixed Hodge structure of a generic such orbit. The result is used to present these spaces as iteratively fibered algebraic-group orbits in a minimal way. We conclude with two applications to variations of Hodge structure.
We show that the statement analogous to the Mumford-Tate conjecture for abelian varieties holds for 1-motives on unipotent parts. This is done by comparing the unipotent part of the associated Hodge group and the unipotent part of the image of the absolute Galois group with the unipotent part of the motivic fundamental group. Contains an appendix by P. Deligne. In this version: Minor corrections here and there. The Main result about the image of the Galois representations is now enriched by an adelic statement.
We introduce $\ell$-Galois special subvarieties as an $\ell$-adic analog of the Hodge-theoretic notion of a special subvariety. The Mumford-Tate conjecture predicts that both notions are equivalent. We study some properties of these subvarieties and prove this equivalence for subvarieties satisfying a simple monodromy condition. As applications, we show that the $\ell$-Galois exceptional locus is a countable union of algebraic subvarieties and, if the derived group of the generic Mumford-Tate group of a family is simple, its part of positive period dimension coincides with the Hodge locus of p…
We study the image of $\ell$-adic representations attached to subvarieties of Shimura varieties $Sh_K(G,X)$ that are not contained in a smaller Shimura subvariety and have no isotrivial components. We show that, for $\ell$ large enough (depending on the Shimura datum $(G,X)$ and the subvariety), such image contains the $\mathbb{Z}_\ell$-points coming from the simply connected cover of the derived subgroup of $G$. This can be regarded as a geometric version of the integral $\ell$-adic Mumford-Tate conjecture.
Let $Y$ be an abelian variety over a subfield $k \subset \mathbb{C}$ that is of finite type over $\mathbb{Q}$. We prove that if the Mumford-Tate conjecture for $Y$ is true, then also some refined integral and adelic conjectures due to Serre are true for $Y$. In particular, if a certain Hodge-maximality condition is satisfied, we obtain an adelic open image theorem for the Galois representation on the (full) Tate module of $Y$. Our second main result is an (unconditional) adelic open image theorem for K3 surfaces. The proofs of these results rely on the study of a natural representation of the …
We prove the Mumford--Tate conjecture for those abelian varieties over number fields whose extensions to C have attached adjoint Shimura varieties that are products of simple, adjoint Shimura varieties of certain Shimura types. In particular, we prove the conjecture for the orthogonal case (i.e., for the $B_n$ and $D_n^R$ Shimura types). As a main tool, we construct embeddings of Shimura varieties (whose adjoints are) of prescribed abelian type into unitary Shimura varieties of PEL type. These constructions implicitly classify the adjoints of Shimura varieties of PEL type.
Let $G$ be a reductive algebraic group over a $p$-adic field or number field $K$, and let $V$ be a $K$-linear faithful representation of $G$. A lattice $Λ$ in the vector space $V$ defines a model $\hat{G}_Λ$ of $G$ over $\mathscr{O}_K$. One may wonder to what extent $Λ$ is determined by the group scheme $\hat{G}_Λ$. In this paper we prove that up to a natural equivalence relation on the set of lattices there are only finitely many $Λ$ corresponding to one model $\hat{G}_Λ$. Furthermore, we relate this fact to moduli spaces of abelian varieties as follows: let $\mathscr{A}_{g,n}$ be the moduli …
We make explicit a construction of Serre giving a definition of an algebraic Sato-Tate group associated to an abelian variety over a number field, which is conjecturally linked to the distribution of normalized L-factors as in the usual Sato-Tate conjecture for elliptic curves. The connected part of the algebraic Sato-Tate group is closely related to the Mumford-Tate group, but the group of components carries additional arithmetic information. We then check that in many cases where the Mumford-Tate group is completely determined by the endomorphisms of the abelian variety, the algebraic Sato-T…
A generalized Tate curve is a universal family of curves with fixed genus and degeneration data which becomes Schottky uniformized Riemann surfaces and Mumford curves by specializing moduli and deformation parameters. By considering each generalized Tate curve as a family of degenerating Riemann surfaces, we give explicit formulas of the period isomorphism between its de Rham and Betti cohomology groups, and of the associated objects: Gauss-Manin connection, variation of Hodge structure and monodromy weight filtration. A remarkable fact is that similar formulas hold also for families of Mumfor…
We study certain real Lie-group orbits in the compact duals of Mumford-Tate domains, verifying a prediction made in [Green, Griffiths, Kerr; Mumford-Tate domains: their geometry and arithmetic] and determining which orbits contain a limit point of some period map. A variety of examples are worked out for the groups SU(2,1), Sp_4, and G_2.
Mumford constructed a family of abelian fourfolds with special stucture not characterized by endomorphism ring. Galluzzi showed that the weight 2 Hodge structure of such a variety decomposes into Hodge substructures via the action of Mumford-Tate group, one of which is of K3 type with Hodge number (1,7,1). We will compute the intersection form of such a Hodge structure and provide a canonical integral Hodge structure on this subspace. Furthermore, we shall show two applications of this invariant. Firstly, using the above formula we shall show that every K3 surface obtained in this way will adm…
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $K$, the number of torsion points rational over a finite extension $L$ is bounded polynomially in terms of the degree $[L:K]$. When $A$ is isogenous to a product of simple abelian varieties of $\GSp$ type, i.e. whose Mumford-Tate group is "generic" (isomorphic to the group of symplectic similitudes) and which satisfy the Mumford-Tate conjecture, we compute the optimal exponent for this bound in terms of the dimensions of the abelian subvarieties of $A$. The result is unconditional for a product of simple abelian varieties with endomorph…
We classify the irreducible Hermitian real variations of Hodge structure admitting an infinitesimal normal function, and draw conclusions for cycle-class maps on families of abelian varieties with a given Mumford-Tate group.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $K$. The number of torsion points that are rational over a finite extension $L$ is bounded polynomially in terms of the degree $[L:K]$ of $L$ over $K$. Under the following three conditions, we compute the optimal exponent for this bound, in terms of the dimension of abelian subvarieties and their endomorphism rings. The three hypothesis are the following: $(1)$ $A$ is geometrically isogenous to a product of simple abelian varieties of type I, II or III, according to the Albert classification; $(2)$ $A$ is of "Lefschetz type", that is, t…
Given a variation of Hodge structures on a quasi-projective base $S$, whose generic Mumford-Tate group is non-product, we prove that the (countable) union of positive components of the Hodge locus is either an algebraic subvariety of $S$, or is Zariski-dense in $S$.
For a linear algebraic group $G$ over $\mathbf Q$, we consider the period domains $D$ classifying $G$-mixed Hodge structures, and construct the extended period domains $D_Σ$. In particular, we give toroidal partial compactifications of mixed Mumford--Tate domains, mixed Shimura varieties over $\mathbf C$, and higher Albanese manifolds.
For a linear algebraic group $G$ over $\bf Q$, we consider the period domains $D$ classifying $G$-mixed Hodge structures, and construct the extended period domains $D_{\mathrm{BS}}$, $D_{\mathrm{SL}(2)}$, and $Γ\backslash D_Σ$. In particular, we give toroidal partial compactifications of mixed Mumford--Tate domains.
We collect evidence in support of a conjecture of Griffiths, Green and Kerr on the arithmetic of extension classes of limiting mixed Hodge structures arising from semistable degenerations over a number field. After briefly summarizing how a result of Iritani implies this conjecture for a collection of hypergeometric Calabi-Yau threefold examples studied by Doran and Morgan, the authors investigate a sequence of (non-hypergeometric) examples in dimensions 1 through 6 arising from Katz's theory of the middle convolution. A crucial role is played by the Mumford-Tate group (of type G2) of the fami…
Our results concern analytic functions on the open unit $p$-adic poly-disc in $\mathbb{C}^n_p$ centered at the multiplicative unit and we prove that such functions only vanish at finitely many $n$-tuples of roots of unity $(ζ_1-1,\ldots,ζ_n-1)$ unless they vanish along a translate of the formal multiplicative group. For polynomial functions, this follows from the multiplicative Manin-Mumford conjecture. However we allow for a much wider class of analytic functions; in particular we establish a rigidity result for formal tori. Moreover, our methods apply to Lubin-Tate formal groups beyond just …
Let $(G,X)$ be a Shimura pair of Hodge type such that $G$ is the Mumford--Tate group of some elements of $X$. We assume that for each simple factor $G_0$ of $G^{\ad}$ there exists a simple factor of $G_{0\dbR}$ which is compact. Let $N\Ge 3$. We show that for many compact open subgroups $K$ of $G(\dbA_f)$, the Shimura variety $\Sh(G,X)/K$ has a projective integral model $\scrN$ over $\dbZ[{1\over N}]$ which is a finite scheme over a certain Mumford moduli scheme $\scrA_{g,1,N}$. Equivalently, we show that if $A$ is an abelian variety over a number field and if the Mumford--Tate group of $A_{\d…
Hodge representations were introduced by Green-Griffiths-Kerr to classify the Hodge groups of polarized Hodge structures, and the corresponding Mumford-Tate subdomains of a period domain. The purpose of this article is to provide an exposition of how, given a fixed period domain $\mathcal{D}$, to enumerate the Hodge representations corresponding to Mumford-Tate subdomains $D \subset \mathcal{D}$. After reviewing the well-known classical cases that $\mathcal{D}$ is Hermitian symmetric (weight $n=1$, and weight $n=2$ with $p_g = h^{2,0}=1$), we illustrate this in the case that $\mathcal{D}$ is t…
We show that every algebraic group scheme over a field with at least 8 elements can be realized as the group of automorphisms of a nonassociative algebra. This is only a modest improvement of the theorem of Gordeev and Popov (2003), but it allows us to give a new characterization of algebraic Lie algebras and to simplify the standard descriptions of Mumford--Tate domains and Shimura varieties as moduli spaces. Once the original argument of Gordeev and Popov has been rewritten in the language of schemes, we find that it also applies to algebraic groups over discrete valuation rings.
Beilinson conjectured that all rational cycles of type (q,q) on the qth cohomology of a smooth complex algebraic variety should come from motivic cohomology. The purpose of this note is to prove this when the variety is a semiabelian variety or a product of curves. The proof is based on the study of invariants under the Mumford-Tate group.
Let A be an abelian variety of dimension g defined over a number field K. We study the size of the torsion group A(F)_{tors} where F/K is a finite extension and more precisely we study the possible exponent γin the inequality Card(A(F)_{tors})<< [F:K]^γ when F is any extension of K. In the C.M. case we give an exact formula for the best possible exponent in terms of the characters of the Mumford-Tate group--a torus in this case--and discuss briefly the general case. Finally we give applications of this result in direction of a conjecture of Rémond generalising the Manin-Mumford conjecture.
We work out the notion of mirror symmetry for abelian varieties and study its properties. Our construction are based on the correspondence between two $Q$--algebraic groups. One is the Hodge (or special Mumford--Tate) group. The second group $\bar{Spin(A)}$ is defined as follows: the group of autoequivalences of the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves acts on the total cohomology $H(A,Q)$ of an abelian variety $A$ via algebraic correspondences. The group $\bar{Spin(A)}$ is now the Zariski closure of its image in $GL(H(A,Q))$. Our constructions are compatible with the picture of mirror…
Let X be a hyperkahler manifold deformation equivalent to a Hilbert scheme of n points on a K3 surface. We compute the graded character formula of the generic Mumford-Tate group representation on the cohomology ring of X, and derive a generating series for deducing the number of canonical Hodge classes on X. The formula indicates the number of Hodge classes on X that remain Hodge under any deformation.
Period domains, the classifying spaces for (pure, polarized) Hodge structures, and more generally Mumford-Tate domains, arise as open $G_{\mathbb{R}}$--orbits in flag varieties $G/P$. We investigate Hodge--theoretic aspects of the geometry and representation theory associated with these flag varieties. In particular, we relate the Griffiths--Yukawa coupling to the variety of lines on $G/P$ (under a minimal homogeneous embedding), construct a large class of polarized $G_{\mathbb{R}}$--orbits in $G/P$, and compute the associated Hodge--theoretic boundary components. An emphasis is placed through…
Let $E$ be a number field and $X$ a smooth geometrically connected variety defined over a characteristic $p$ finite field. Given an $n$-dimensional pure $E$-compatible system of semisimple $λ$-adic representations of the étale fundamental group of $X$ with connected algebraic monodromy groups $G_λ$, we construct a common $E$-form $G$ of all the groups $G_λ$ and in the absolutely irreducible case, a common $E$-form $G\hookrightarrow\text{GL}_{n,E}$ of all the tautological representations $G_λ\hookrightarrow\text{GL}_{n,E_λ}$ (Theorem 1.1). Analogous rationality results in characteristic $p$ ass…
