We consider a prototypical "stretching plus bending" functional of an elastic shell. The shell is modeled as a d-dimensional Riemannian manifold endowed, in addition to the metric, with a reference second fundamental form. The shell is immersed into a (d+1)-dimensional ambient space, and the elastic energy accounts for deviations of the induced metric and second fundamental forms from their reference values. Under the assumption that the ambient space is of constant sectional curvature, we prove that any sequence of immersions of asymptotically vanishing energy converges to an isometric immersion of the shell into ambient space, having the reference second fundamental form. In particular, if the ambient space is Euclidean space, then the reference metric and second fundamental form satisfy the Gauss-Codazzi-Mainardi compatibility conditions. This theorem can be viewed as a (manifold-valued) co-dimension 1 analog of Reshetnyak's asymptotic rigidity theorem. It also relates to recent results on the continuity of surfaces with respect to their fundamental forms.

Non-Euclidean, or incompatible elasticity is an elastic theory for pre-stressed materials, which is based on a modeling of the elastic body as a Riemannian manifold. In this paper we derive a dimensionally-reduced model of the so-called membrane limit of a thin incompatible body. By generalizing classical dimension reduction techniques to the Riemannian setting, we are able to prove a general theorem that applies to an elastic body of arbitrary dimension, arbitrary slender dimension, and arbitrary metric. The limiting model implies the minimization of an integral functional defined over immers…
In the present paper, we revisit the rigidity of hypersurfaces in Euclidean space. We highlight Darboux equation and give new proof of rigidity of hypersurfaces by energy method and maximal principle.
In this paper, we firstly establish a new volume growth estimate for spacelike entire graphs in the pseudo-Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{m+n}_n$. Then by using this volume growth estimate and the Co-Area formula, we prove various rigidity results for spacelike entire self-shrinking graphs.
We prove a rigidity result for non-negative scalar curvature perturbations of the Euclidean metric on $\mathbb{R^n}$ , which may be regarded as a weak version of the rigidity statement of the positive mass theorem. We prove our result by analyzing long time solutions of Ricci DeTurck flow. As a byproduct in doing so, we extend known $L^p$ bounds and decay rates for Ricci DeTurck flow and prove regularity of the flow at the initial data.
Consider an orientable compact surface in three dimensional Euclidean space with minimum total absolute curvature. If the Gaussian curvature changes sign to finite order and satisfies a nondegeneracy condition along closed asymptotic curves, we show that any other isometric surface differs by at most a Euclidean motion.
We prove that a metric measure space equipped with a Dirichlet form admitting an Euclidean heat kernel is necessarily isometric to the Euclidean space. This helps us providing an alternative proof of Colding's celebrated almost rigidity volume theorem via a quantitative version of our main result. We also discuss the case of a metric measure space equipped with a Dirichlet form admitting a spherical heat kernel.
We show that every complete entire self-shrinking solution on complex Euclidean space to the Kahler-Ricci flow must be generated from a quadratic potential.
Let M be a closed minimal hypersurface in 5-dimensional Euclidean sphere with constant nonnegative scalar curvature. We prove that, if the sum of the cubes of all principal curvatures and the number of distinct principal curvatures are constant, then M is isoparametric. Moreover, We give all possible values for squared length of the second fundamental form of M. This result provides another piece of supporting evidence to the Chern conjecture.
In this paper, we investigate the parametric version and non-parametric version of rigidity theorem of spacelike translating solitons in pseudo-Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{m+n}_{n}$. Firstly, we classify $m$-dimensional complete spacelike translating solitons in $\mathbb{R}^{m+n}_{n}$ by affine technique and classical gradient estimates, and prove the only complete spacelike translating solitons in $\mathbb{R}^{m+n}_{n}$ are the spacelike $m$-planes. This result provides another proof of a nonexistence theorem for complete spacelike translating solitons in \cite{C-Q}, and a simple proof of ri…
We consider a class of overdetermined problems in rotationally symmetric spaces, which reduce to the classical Serrin's overdetermined problem in the case of the Euclidean space. We prove some general integral identities for rotationally symmetric spaces which imply a rigidity result in the case of the round sphere.
We study the curvature condition which uniquely characterizes the hemisphere. In particular, we prove the Min-Oo conjecture for hypersurfaces in Euclidean space and hyperbolic space.
In this article, we generalize Eberlein's Rigidity Theorem to the singular case, namely, one of the spaces is only assumed to be a CAT(0) topological manifold. As a corollary, we get that any compact irreducible but locally reducible locally symmetric space of noncompact type does not admit a nonpositively curved (in the Aleksandrov sense) piecewise Euclidean structure. Any hyperbolic manifold, on the other hand, does admit such a structure.
In this paper, for an immersion $f$ of an $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$ into $(n+d)$-Euclidean space we give a sufficient condition on $f$ so that, in case $d\leq 5$, any immersion $g$ of $M$ into $(n+d+1)$-Euclidean space that induces on $M$ a metric that is conformal to the metric induced by $f$ is locally obtained, in a dense subset of $M$, by a composition of $f$ and a conformal immersion from an open subset of $(n+d)$-Euclidean space into an open subset of $(n+d+1)$-Euclidean space. Our result extends a theorem for hypersurfaces due to M. Dajczer and E. Vergasta. The restriction…
We prove that horospheres, hyperspheres and hyperplanes in a hyperbolic space H n , n $\ge$ 3, admit no perturbations with compact support which increase their mean curvature. is is an extension of the analogous result in the Euclidean spaces, due to M. Gromov, which states that a hyperplane in a Euclidean space R n admits no compactly supported perturbations having mean curvature $\ge$ 0.
In this note we prove a global rigidity result for asymptotically flat, scalar flat Euclidean hypersurfaces with a minimal horizon lying in a hyperplane, under a natural ellipticity condition. As a consequence we obtain, in the context of the Riemannian Penrose conjecture, a local rigidity result for the family of exterior Schwarzschild solutions (viewed as graphs in Euclidean space).
The deformation theory of hyperbolic and Euclidean cone-manifolds with all cone angles less then 2π plays an important role in many problems in low dimensional topology and in the geometrization of 3-manifolds. Furthermore, various old conjectures dating back to Stoker about the moduli of convex hyperbolic and Euclidean polyhedra can be reduced to the study of deformations of cone-manifolds by doubling a polyhedron across its faces. This deformation theory has been understood by Hodgson and Kerckhoff when the singular set has no vertices, and by Weiß when the cone angles are less than π. We pr…
We prove that the Euclidean plane is the only Riemannian plane with total curvature and free of conjugate points that satisfies Playfair's version of the parallel postulate.
We prove the following comparison theorem for metrics with nonnegative scalar curvature, also known as the dihedral rigidity conjecture by Gromov: for $n\le 7$, if an $n$-dimensional prism has nonnegative scalar curvature and weakly mean convex faces, then its dihedral angle cannot be everywhere not larger than its Euclidean model, unless it is isometric to an Euclidean prism. The proof relies on constructing certain free boundary minimal hypersurface in a Riemannian polyhedron, and extending a dimension descent idea of Schoen-Yau. Our result is a localization of the positive mass theorem.
In this paper we obtain an analogue of Toponogov theorem in dimension 3 for compact manifolds $M^3$ with nonnegative Ricci curvature and strictly convex boundary $\partial M$. Here we obtain a sharp upper bound for the length $L(\partialΣ)$ of the boundary $\partialΣ$ of a free boundary minimal surface $Σ^2$ in $M^3$ in terms of the genus of $Σ$ and the number of connected components of $\partialΣ$, assuming $Σ$ has index one. After, under a natural hypothesis on the geometry of $M$ along $\partial M$, we prove that if $L(\partialΣ)$ saturates the respective upper bound, then $M^3$ is isometri…
There are several well-known characterizations of the sphere as a regular surface in the Euclidean space. By means of a purely synthetic technique, we get a rigidity result for the sphere without any curvature conditions, nor completeness or compactness. As well as a dual result for the hyperbolic plane, the spacelike sphere in the Minkowski space.
We show that among the Euclidean submanifolds with codimension two the ones of rank two that are parabolic but nonruled are isometrically rigid. This generalizes the result in [10] that these submanifolds are genuinely rigid. In addition, we give a parametric classifications of all parabolic submanifolds.
This paper develops a Carleman type estimate for immersed surface in Euclidean space at infinity. With this estimate, we obtain an unique continuation property for harmonic functions on immersed surfaces vanishing at infinity, which leads to rigidity results in geometry.

We prove a topological rigidity theorem for closed hypersurfaces of the Euclidean sphere and of an elliptic space form. It asserts that, under a lower bound hypothesis on the absolute value of the principal curvatures, the hypersurface is diffeomorphic to a sphere or to a quotient of a sphere by a group action. We also prove another topological rigidity result for hypersurfaces of the sphere that involves the spherical image of its usual Gauss map.
The classical Liouville Theorem on conformal transformations determines local conformal transformations on the Euclidean space of dimension $\geq 3$. Its natural adaptation to the general framework of Riemannian structures is the 2-rigidity of conformal transformations, that is such a transformation is fully determined by its 2-jet at any point. We prove here a similar rigidity for generalized conformal structures defined by giving a one parameter family of metrics (instead of scalar multiples of a given one) on each tangent space.
We provide a somewhat geometric proof of a rigidity theorem by M. Ledoux and C. Xia concerning complete manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature supporting an Euclidean-type Sobolev inequality with (almost) best Sobolev constant. Using the same technique we also generalize Ledoux-Xia result to complete manifolds with asymptotically non-negative curvature.
By the integral method we prove that any space-like entire graphic self-shrinking solution to Lagrangian mean curvature flow in $\R^{2n}_{n}$ with the indefinite metric $\sum_i dx_idy_i$ is flat. This result improves the previous ones in \cite{HW} and \cite{CCY} by removing the additional assumption in their results. In a similar manner, we reprove its Euclidean counterpart which is established in \cite{CCY}.
Perez proved some $L^2$ inequalities for closed convex hypersurfaces immersed in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, more generally, for closed hypersurfaces with non-negative Ricci curvature, immersed in an Einstein manifold. In this paper, we discuss the rigidity of these inequalities when the ambient manifold is $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^{n+1}$, or the closed hemisphere $\mathbb{S}_+^{n+1}$. We also obtain a generalization of the Perez's theorem to the hypersurfaces without the hypothesis of non-negative Ricci curvature.
By means of a space-time Wasserstein control, we show the monotonicity of the W-entropy functional in time along heat flows on possibly singular metric measure spaces with non-negative Ricci curvature and a finite upper bound of dimension in an appropriate sense. The associated rigidity result on the rate of dissipation of the W-entropy is also proved. These extend known results even on weighted Riemannian manifolds in some respects. In addition, we reveal that some singular spaces will exhibit the rigidity models while only the Euclidean space does in the class of smooth weighted Riemannian m…
In this paper we prove that the space of flat metrics (nonpositively curved Euclidean cone metrics) on a closed, oriented surface is marked length spectrally rigid. In other words, two flat metrics assigning the same lengths to all closed curves differ by an isometry isotopic to the identity. The novel proof suggests a stronger rigidity result for flat metrics.
We use the weighted Hsiung-Minkowski integral formulas and Brendle's inequality to show new rigidity results. First, we prove Alexandrov type results for closed embedded hypersurfaces with radially symmetric higher order mean curvature in a large class of Riemannian warped product manifolds, including the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström spaces, where the Alexandrov reflection principle is not available. Second, we prove that, in Euclidean space, the only closed immersed self-expanding solitons to the weighted generalized inverse curvature flow of codimension one are round hyperspheres.
We prove that a hemisphere in the Euclidean space $R^{n+1}$, viewed as the graph of a function, admits no smooth perturbations as graphs with mean curvature $H\ge 1$ whose boundary equator is fixed up to $C^2$. This is an extension of the \emph{Mean Curvature Rigidity} phenomenon discovered by Gromov and Souam on non-compact totally umbilic hypersurfaces in space forms. The proof uses a Tangency Principle. On the other hand, we show that there exist nontrivial smooth perturbations with $H\ge 1$ on a great spherical cap whose boundary is fixed up to $C^2$. Similar results hold true for perturba…
We present a quasi-local version of the stability of the positive mass theorem. We work with the Brown--York quasi-local mass as it possesses positivity and rigidity properties, and therefore the stability of this rigidity statement can be studied. Specifically, we ask if the Brown--York mass of the boundary of some compact manifold is close to zero, must the manifold be close to a Euclidean domain in some sense? Here we consider a class of compact $n$-manifolds with boundary that can be realized as graphs in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, and establish the following. If the Brown--York mass of the bound…
We prove that if an asymptotically Schwarzschildean 3-manifold (M,g) contains a properly embedded stable minimal surface, then it is isometric to the Euclidean space. This implies, for instance, that in presence of a positive ADM mass any sequence of solutions to the Plateau problem with diverging boundaries can never have uniform height bounds, even at a single point. An analogous result holds true up to ambient dimension seven provided polynomial volume growth on the hypersurface is assumed.
This paper provides a classification result for gravitational instantons with cubic volume growth and cyclic fundamental group at infinity. It proves that a complete hyperkähler manifold asymptotic to a circle fibration over the Euclidean three-space is either the standard $\rl^3 \times \sph^1$ or a multi-Taub-NUT manifold. In particular, the underlying complex manifold is either $\cx \times \cx/\ir$ or a minimal resolution of a cyclic Kleinian singularity.
We prove rigidity results involving the Hawking mass for surfaces immersed in a $3$-dimensional, complete Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ with non-negative scalar curvature (resp. with scalar curvature bounded below by $-6$). Roughly, the main result states that if an open subset $Ω\subset M$ satisfies that every point has a neighbourhood $U\subset Ω$ such that the supremum of the Hawking mass of surfaces contained in $U$ is non-positive, then $Ω$ is locally isometric to Euclidean ${\mathbb R}^3$ (resp. locally isometric to the Hyperbolic 3-space ${\mathbb H}^3$). Under mild asymptotic conditions …
If a group $Γ$ acts geometrically on a CAT(0) space $X$ without 3-flats, then either $X$ contains a $Γ$-periodic geodesic which does not bound a flat half-plane, or else $X$ is a rank 2 Riemannian symmetric space, a 2-dimensional Euclidean building or non-trivially splits as a metric product. Consequently all such groups satisfy a strong form of the Tits Alternative.
