An exact transformation, which we call the \emph{master identity}, is obtained for the first time for the series $\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}σ_{a}(n)e^{-ny}$ for $a\in\mathbb{C}$ and Re$(y)>0$. New modular-type transformations when $a$ is a non-zero even integer are obtained as its special cases. The precise obstruction to modularity is explicitly seen in these transformations. These include a novel companion to Ramanujan's famous formula for $ζ(2m+1)$. The Wigert-Bellman identity arising from the $a=0$ case of the master identity is derived too. When $a$ is an odd integer, the well-known modular transformations of the Eisenstein series on $\textup{SL}_{2}\left(\mathbb{Z}\right)$, that of the Dedekind eta function as well as Ramanujan's formula for $ζ(2m+1)$ are derived from the master identity. The latter identity itself is derived using Guinand's version of the Vorono\"{\dotlessi} summation formula and an integral evaluation of N.~S.~Koshliakov involving a generalization of the modified Bessel function $K_ν(z)$. Koshliakov's integral evaluation is proved for the first time. It is then generalized using a well-known kernel of Watson to obtain an interesting two-variable generalization of the modified Bessel function. This generalization allows us to obtain a new modular-type transformation involving the sums-of-squares function $r_k(n)$. Some results on functions self-reciprocal in the Watson kernel are also obtained.
Applying the theory of modular forms and Lambert series manipulations we establish an Eisenstein series identity. From this formula we confirm a Lambert series identity conjectured by Gosper. Another Lambert series identity of Gosper is also confirmed by using Lambert series manipulations.
In the work we shall present formulas to sum Lambert series using Euler's q-exponential functions, and several Lambert series associated with well-known arithmetic functions are given as examples. These functions are: the Möbius $μ(n)$, the Euler's totient $φ(n)$, Jordan's totient $J_{k}(n)$, von Mangoldt $Λ(n)$, divisor function $σ_{s}(n)$, the Ramanujan's sum $c_{q}(n)$ , and sum of square functions $r_{2}(n),r_{4}(n),r_{8}(n)$.
We show how one can obtain rational approximants for $q$-extensions of the harmonic series and the logarithm (and many other similar quantities) by Padé approximation using little $q$-Legendre polynomials and we show that properties of these orthogonal polynomials indeed prove the irrationality, with an upper bound of the measure of irrationality which is as sharp as the upper bound given by Bundschuh and Väänänen for the harmonic series and a better upper bound than the one given by Matala-aho and Väänänen for the logarithm.
We show that the Lambert series $f(x)=\sum d(n) x^n$ is irrational at $x=1/b$ for negative integers $b < -1$ using an elementary proof that finishes an incomplete proof of Erdos.
We show how Rank-Crank type PDEs for higher order Appell functions due to Zwegers may be obtained from a generalized Lambert series identity due to the first author. Special cases are the Rank-Crank PDE due to Atkin and the third author and a PDE for a level 5 Appell function also found by the third author. These two special PDEs are related to generalized Lambert series identities due to Watson, and Jackson respectively. The first author's Lambert series identities are common generalizations. We also show how Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer's proof using elliptic functions can be extended to prove …
We first summarize joint work on several preliminary canonical Lambert series factorization theorems. Within this article we establish new analogs to these original factorization theorems which characterize two specific primary cases of the expansions of Lambert series generating functions: factorizations for Hadamard products of Lambert series and for higher-order derivatives of Lambert series. The series coefficients corresponding to these two generating function cases are important enough to require the special due attention we give to their expansions within the article, and moreover, are …
We summarize the known useful and interesting results and formulas we have discovered so far in this collaborative article summarizing results from two related articles by Merca and Schmidt arriving at related so-termed Lambert series factorization theorems. We unify the matrix representations that underlie two of our separate papers, and which commonly arise in identities involving partition functions and other functions generated by Lambert series. We provide a number of properties and conjectures related to the inverse matrix entries defined in Schmidt's article and the Euler partition func…
We apply the Pade technique to find rational approximations to % \[h^{\pm}(q_1,q_2)=\sum_{k=1}^\infty\frac{\q_1^k}{1\pm \q_2^k}, 0<q_1,q_2<1, q_1\in\mathbb{Q}, q_2=1/p_2, p_2\in\mathbb{N}\setminus\{1\}.\] % A separate section is dedicated to the special case $q_i=q^{r_i}, r_i\in\mathbb{N}, q=1/p, p\in\mathbb{N}\setminus\{1\}$. In this construction we make use of little $q$-Jacobi polynomials. Our rational approximations are good enough to prove the irrationality of $h^{\pm}(q_1,q_2)$ and give an upper bound for the irrationality measure.
We prove new variants of the Lambert series factorization theorems studied by Merca and Schmidt (2017) which correspond to a more general class of Lambert series expansions of the form $L_a(α, β, q) := \sum_{n \geq 1} a_n q^{αn-β} / (1-q^{αn-β})$ for integers $α, β$ defined such that $α\geq 1$ and $0 \leq β< α$. Applications of the new results in the article are given to restricted divisor sums over several classical special arithmetic functions which define the cases of well-known, so-termed "ordinary" Lambert series expansions cited in the introduction. We prove several new forms of factoriz…
Recently, Juyal, Maji, and Sathyanarayana have studied a Lambert series associated with a cusp form over the full modular group and the Möbius function. In this paper, we investigate the Lambert series $\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}[a_f(n)ψ(n)*μ(n)ψ'(n)]\exp(-ny),$ where $a_f(n)$ is the $n$th Fourier coefficient of a cusp form $f$ over any congruence subgroup, and $ψ$ and $ ψ'$ are primitive Dirichlet characters. This extends the earlier work to the case of higher level subgroups and also gives a character analogue.
We study the Lambert series $\mathscr{L}_q(s,x) = \sum_{k=1}^\infty k^s q^{k x}/(1-q^k)$, for all $s \in \mathbb{C}$. We obtain the complete asymptotic expansion of $\mathscr{L}_q(s,x)$ near $q=1$. Our analysis of the Lambert series yields the asymptotic forms for several related q-functions: the q-gamma and q-polygamma functions, the q-Pochhammer symbol, and, in closed form, the Jacobi theta functions. Some typical results include $Γ_2(\frac{1}{4}) Γ_2(\frac{3}{4}) \simeq \frac{2^{13/32} π}{\log 2}$ and $\vartheta_4 (0,e^{-1/π}) \simeq 2 πe^{-π^3\!/4}$, with relative errors of order $10^{-25}…
We consider special Lambert series as generating functions of divisor sums and determine their complete transseries expansion near rational roots of unity. Our methods also yield new insights into the Laurent expansions and modularity properties of iterated Eisenstein integrals that have recently attracted attention in the context of certain period integrals and string theory scattering amplitudes.
An explicit transformation for the series $\sum\limits_{n=1}^{\infty}\displaystyle\frac{\log(n)}{e^{ny}-1},$ Re$(y)>0$, which takes $y$ to $1/y$, is obtained for the first time. This series transforms into a series containing $ψ_1(z)$, the derivative of Deninger's function $R(z)$. In the course of obtaining the transformation, new important properties of $ψ_1(z)$ are derived, as is a new representation for the second derivative of the two-variable Mittag-Leffler function $E_{2, b}(z)$ evaluated at $b=1$. Our transformation readily gives the complete asymptotic expansion of $\sum\limits_{n=1}^{…
It is pointed out that the generalized Lambert series $\displaystyle\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\frac{n^{N-2h}}{e^{n^{N}x}-1}$ studied by Kanemitsu, Tanigawa and Yoshimoto can be found on page $332$ of Ramanujan's Lost Notebook in a slightly more general form. We extend an important transformation of this series obtained by Kanemitsu, Tanigawa and Yoshimoto by removing restrictions on the parameters $N$ and $h$ that they impose. From our extension we deduce a beautiful new generalization of Ramanujan's famous formula for odd zeta values which, for $N$ odd and $m>0$, gives a relation between $ζ(2m+1)$ a…
Based on the values of the Weierstrass elliptic function $\wp(z|τ)$ at $z=πτ/2$, $(π+πτ)/{2}, (π+πτ)/{4},(π+2πτ)/{4}$ and the theory of modular forms on the arithmetic group $Γ_0(2)$, we decompose $θ_2^{2n}(τ)$ as sum of Eisenstein series and a cusp forms. Using the recurrence relation of $\wp^{(2n)}(z|τ)$, we provide an algorithm to determine the exact form of these cusp forms.
Hafner and Stopple proved a conjecture of Zagier, that the inverse Mellin transform of the symmetric square $L$-function associated to the Ramanujan tau function has an asymptotic expansion in terms of the non-trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function $ζ(s)$. Later, Chakraborty, Kanemitsu and the second author extended this phenomenon for any Hecke eigenform over the full modular group. In this paper, we study an asymptotic expansion of the Lambert series \begin{equation*} y^k \sum_{n=1}^\infty λ_{f}( n^2 ) \exp (- ny), \quad \textrm{as}\,\, y \rightarrow 0^{+}, \end{equation*} where $λ_f(n)$…
A comprehensive study of the generalized Lambert series $\displaystyle\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\frac{n^{N-2h}\exp{(-an^{N}x)}}{1-\exp{(-n^{N}x)}}, 0<a\leq 1,\ x>0$, $N\in\mathbb{N}$ and $h\in\mathbb{Z}$, is undertaken. Two of the general transformations of this series that we obtain here lead to two-parameter generalizations of Ramanujan's famous formula for $ζ(2m+1)$, $m>0$ and the transformation formula for $\logη(z)$. Numerous important special cases of our transformations are derived. An identity relating $ζ(2N+1), ζ(4N+1),\cdots, ζ(2Nm+1)$ is obtained for $N$ odd and $m\in\mathbb{N}$. Certain t…
We consider relations between the pairs of sequences, $(f, g_f)$, generated by the Lambert series expansions, $L_f(q) = \sum_{n \geq 1} f(n) q^n / (1-q^n)$, in $q$. In particular, we prove new forms of recurrence relations and matrix equations defining these sequences for all $n \in \mathbb{Z}^{+}$. The key ingredient to the proof of these results is given by the statement of Euler's pentagonal number theorem expanding the series for the infinite $q$-Pochhammer product, $(q; q)_{\infty}$, and for the first $n$ terms of the partial products, $(q; q)_n$, forming the denominators of the rational …
We prove some Lambert series which were stated by Gosper without proof or reference. As an application, we shall evaluate integrals involving Ramanujan theta function $ψ(q)$. Furthermore, motivated by Ramanujan's identities for $qψ^4(q^2)$ and $\fr{ψ^3(q)}{ψ(q^3)}$, we shall evaluate the squares of $qψ^4(q^2)$ and $\fr{ψ^3(q)}{ψ(q^3)}$ in terms of Lambert series.
We study the function series $\sum_{n=1}^\infty ϕ^{2m+2} \text{cosch}^{2m+2}(nϕ/2)$, and similar series, for integers $m$ and complex $ϕ$. This hyperbolic series is linearly related to the Lambert series. The Lambert series is known to satisfy a functional equation which defines the Ramanujan polynomials. By using residue theorem (summation theorem) we find the functional equation satisfied by this hyperbolic series. The functional equation identifies a class of polynomials which can be seen as a generalization of the Ramanujan polynomials. These polynomials coincide with the asymptotic expans…
Andrews and Bressoud, Alladi and Gordon, and others, have proven, in a number of papers, that the coefficients in various arithmetic progressions in the series expansions of certain infinite $q$-products vanish. In the present paper it is shown that these results follow automatically (simply by specializing parameters) in an identity derived from a special case of Ramanujan's $_1ψ_1$ identity. Likewise, a number of authors have proven results about the $m$-dissections of certain infinite $q$-products using various methods. It is shown that many of these $m$-dissections also follow automaticall…
We state and prove an identity which connects theta series associated with binary quadratic forms of idoneal discriminants $Δ$ and $Δp^2$, for $p$ a prime. Employing this identity, we extend the results of Toh by writing the theta series of forms of discriminant $Δp^2$ as a linear combination of Lambert series. We then use these Lambert series decompositions to give explicit representation formulas for the forms of discriminant $Δp^2$. Lastly, we give a generalization of our main identity, which employs a map of Buell to connect forms of discriminant $Δ$ to $Δp^2$. Our generalized identity lin…
We prove new exact formulas for the generalized sum-of-divisors functions, $σ_α(x) := \sum_{d|x} d^α$. The formulas for $σ_α(x)$ when $α\in \mathbb{C}$ is fixed and $x \geq 1$ involves a finite sum over all of the prime factors $n \leq x$ and terms involving the $r$-order harmonic number sequences and the Ramanujan sums $c_d(x)$. The generalized harmonic number sequences correspond to the partial sums of the Riemann zeta function when $r > 1$ and are related to the generalized Bernoulli numbers when $r \leq 0$ is integer-valued. A key part of our new expansions of the Lambert series generating…
We introduce two new integer partition functions, both of which are the number of partition quadruples of $n$ with certain size restrictions. We prove both functions satisfy Ramanujan-type congruences modulo $3$, $5$, $7$, and $13$ by use of generalized Lambert series identities and $q$-series techniques.
In 1975, Don Zagier obtained a new version of the Kronecker limit formula for a real quadratic field which involved an interesting function $F(x)$ which is now known as the \emph{Herglotz function}. As demonstrated by Zagier, and very recently by Radchenko and Zagier, $F(x)$ satisfies beautiful properties which are of interest in both algebraic number theory as well as in analytic number theory. In this paper, we study $\mathscr{F}_{k,N}(x)$, an extension of the Herglotz function which also subsumes \emph{higher Herglotz function} of Vlasenko and Zagier. We call it the \emph{extended higher He…
We connect a primitive operation from arithmetic -- summing the digits of a base-$B$ integer -- to $q$-series and product generating functions analogous to those in partition theory. We find digit sum generating functions to be intertwined with distinctive classes of "$B$-ary" Lambert series, which themselves enjoy nice transformations. We also consider digit sum Dirichlet series.
In this paper we derive many infinite families of explicit exact formulas involving either squares or triangular numbers, two of which generalize Jacobi's 4 and 8 squares identities to 4n^2 or 4n(n+1) squares, respectively, without using cusp forms. In fact, we similarly generalize to infinite families all of Jacobi's explicitly stated degree 2, 4, 6, 8 Lambert series expansions of classical theta functions. In addition, we extend Jacobi's special analysis of 2 squares, 2 triangles, 6 squares, 6 triangles to 12 squares, 12 triangles, 20 squares, 20 triangles, respectively. These results, depen…
The aim of this paper is to define some new number-theoretic functions including necklaces polynomials and the numbers of special words such as Lyndon words. By using Dirichlet convolution formula with well-known number-theoretic functions, we derive some new identities and relations associated with Dirichlet series, Lambert series, and also the family of zeta functions including the Riemann zeta functions and polylogarithm functions. By using analytic (meromorphic) continuation of zeta functions, we also derive identities and formulas including Bernoulli numbers and Apostol-Bernoulli numbers.…
We revisit old conjectures of Fermat and Euler regarding representation of integers by binary quadratic form x^2+5y^2. Making use of Ramanujan's_1ψ_1 summation formula we establish a new Lambert series identity for \sum_{n,m=-\infty}^{\infty} q^{n^2+5m^2}. Conjectures of Fermat and Euler are shown to follow easily from this new formula. But we don't stop there. Employing various formulas found in Ramanujan's notebooks and using a bit of ingenuity we obtaina collection of new Lambert series for certain infinite products associated with quadratic forms such as x^2+6y^2, 2x^2+3y^2, x^2+15y^2, 3x^…
We use a generalized Lambert series identity due to the first author to present q-series proofs of recent results of Imamoglu, Raum and Richter concerning recursive formulas for the coefficients of two 3rd order mock theta functions. Additionally, we discuss an application of this identity to other mock theta functions.
We prove formulas for the generating functions for M_2-rank differences for partitions without repeated odd parts. These formulas are in terms of modular forms and generalized Lambert series.
We introduce an "$L$-function" $\mathcal{L}$ built up from the integral representation of the Barnes' multiple zeta function $ζ$. Unlike the latter, $\mathcal{L}$ is defined on a domain equipped with a non-trivial action of a group $G$. Although these two functions differ from each other, we can use $\mathcal{L}$ to study $ζ$. In fact, the transformation formula for $\mathcal{L}$ under $G$-transformations provides us with a new perspective on the special values of both $ζ$ and its $s$-derivative. In particular, we obtain Kronecker limit formulas for $ζ$ when restricted to points fixed by eleme…
The main goal of this paper is to give a modular type representation for the infinite product $(1-x)(1-xq)(1-xq^2)(1-xq^3)...$. It is shown that this representation essentially contains the well-known modular formulae either for Dedekind's eta function, Jacobi theta function or for certain Lambert series. Thus a new and unified approach is outlined for the study of elliptic and modular functions and related series.
Let $(α_n(a,k),β_n(a,k))$ be a WP-Bailey pair. Assuming the limits exist, let \[ (α_n^*(a),β_n^*(a))_{n\geq 1} = \lim_{k \to 1}\left(α_n(a,k),\frac{β_n(a,k)}{1-k}\right)_{n\geq 1} \] be the \emph{derived} WP-Bailey pair. By considering a particular limiting case of a transformation due to George Andrews, we derive new basic hypergeometric summation and transformation formulae involving derived WP-Bailey pairs. We then use these formulae to derive new identities for various theta series/products which are expressible in terms of certain types of Lambert series.
In this paper we construct trigonometric functions of the sum T_{p}(h,k), which is called Dedekind type DC-(Dahee and Changhee) sums. We establish analytic properties of this sum. We find trigonometric representations of this sum. We prove reciprocity theorem of this sums. Furthermore, we obtain relations between the Clausen functions, Polylogarithm function, Hurwitz zeta function, generalized Lambert series (G-series), Hardy-Berndt sums and the sum T_{p}(h,k). We also give some applications related to these sums and functions.
B.C. Berndt evaluated special values of the cotangent Dirichlet series. T. Arakawa studied a generalization of the series, or generalized cotangent Dirichlet series, and gave its transformation formulae. In this paper, we establish an elliptic analogue of the generalized cotangent Dirichlet series and give its transformation formulae at some integer arguments. As a corollary, we obtain the transformation formulae of the generalized cotangent Dirichlet series at some integer arguments which are the part of Arakawa's transformation formulae. Those transformation formulae give the special values …
In this paper, a transformation formula under modular substitutions is derived for a large class of generalized Eisenstein series. Appearing in the transformation formulae are generalizations of Dedekind sums involving the periodic Bernoulli function. Reciprocity theorems are proved for these Dedekind sums. Furthermore, as an application of the transformation formulae, relations between various infinite series and evaluations of several infinite series are deduced. Finally, we consider these sums for some special cases.
We prove a new Bailey-type transformation relating WP-Bailey pairs. We then use this transformation to derive a number of new 3- and 4-term transformation formulae between basic hypergeometric series.
