Inducing long-range magnetic order in three-dimensional topological insulators can gap the Diraclike metallic surface states, leading to exotic new phases such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect or the axion insulator state. These magnetic topological phases can host robust, dissipationless charge and spin currents or unique magnetoelectric behavior, which can be exploited in low-energy electronics and spintronics applications. Although several different strategies have been successfully implemented to realize these states, to date these phenomena have been confined to temperatures below a few Kelvin. In this review, we focus on one strategy, inducing magnetic order in topological insulators by proximity of magnetic materials, which has the capability for room temperature operation, unlocking the potential of magnetic topological phases for applications. We discuss the unique advantages of this strategy, the important physical mechanisms facilitating magnetic proximity effect, and the recent progress to achieve, understand, and harness proximity-coupled magnetic order in topological insulators. We also highlight some emerging new phenomena and applications enabled by proximity coupling of magnetism and topological materials, such as skyrmions and the topological Hall effect, and we conclude with an outlook on remaining challenges and opportunities in the field.
We experimentally demonstrate the existence of magnetic coupling between two ferromagnets separated by a thin Pt layer. The coupling remains ferromagnetic regardless of the Pt thickness, and exhibits a significant dependence on temperature. Therefore, it cannot be explained by the established mechanisms of magnetic coupling across nonmagnetic spacers. We show that the experimental results are consistent with the presence of magnetism induced in Pt in proximity to ferromagnets, in direct analogy to the well-known proximity effects in superconductivity.
Dynamic manipulation of magnetism in topological materials is demonstrated here via a Floquet engineering approach using circularly polarized light. Increasing the strength of the laser field, besides the expected topological phase transition, the magnetically doped topological insulator thin film also undergoes a magnetic phase transition from ferromagnetism to paramagnetism, whose critical behavior strongly depends on the quantum quenching. In sharp contrast to the equilibrium case, the non-equilibrium Curie temperatures vary for different time scale and experimental setup, not all relying o…
Three-dimensional topological insulators (TIs) have emerged as a unique state of quantum matter and generated enormous interests in condensed matter physics. The surfaces of a three dimensional (3D) TI are composed of a massless Dirac cone, which is characterized by the Z2 topological invariant. Introduction of magnetism on the surface of TI is essential to realize the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) and other novel magneto-electric phenomena. Here, by using a combination of first principles calculations, magneto-transport, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and time resol…
Topological insulators (TIs) are bulk insulators that possess robust helical conducting states along their interfaces with conventional insulators. A tremendous research effort has recently been devoted to TI-based heterostructures, in which conventional proximity effects give rise to a series of exotic physical phenomena. This paper reviews our recent works on the potential existence of topological proximity effects at the interface between a topological insulator and a normal insulator or other topologically trivial systems. Using first-principles approaches, we have established the tunabili…
We report on first-principles calculations of spin-dependent properties in graphene induced by its interaction with a nearby magnetic insulator (Europium oxide, EuO). The magnetic proximity effect results in spin polarization of graphene $π$ orbitals by up to 24 %, together with large exchange splitting bandgap of about 36 meV. The position of the Dirac cone is further shown to depend strongly on the graphene-EuO interlayer. These findings point towards the possible engineering of spin gating by proximity effect at relatively high temperature, which stands as a hallmark for future all-spin inf…
We report a systematic first-principles investigation of the influence of different magnetic insulators on the magnetic proximity effect induced in graphene. Four different magnetic insulators are considered: two ferromagnetic europium chalcogenides namely EuO and EuS and two ferrimagnetic insulators yttrium iron garnet (YIG) and cobalt ferrite (CFO). The obtained exchange-splitting varies from tens to hundreds of meV. We also find an electron doping induced by YIG and europium chalcogenides substrates, that shift the Fermi level up to 0.78 eV and 1.3 eV respectively, whereas hole doping up to…
Magnetic proximity effect between topological insulator (TI) and ferromagnetic insulator (FMI) is considered to have great potential in spintronics. However, a complete determination of interfacial magnetic structure has been highly challenging. We theoretically investigate the interlayer exchange coupling of two FMIs separated by a TI thin film, and show that the particular electronic states of the TI contributing to the proximity effect can be directly identified through the coupling behavior between two FMIs, together with a tunability of coupling constant. Such FMI/TI/FMI structure not onl…
The magnetic properties of the van der Waals magnetic topological insulators MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ are investigated by magneto-transport measurements. We evidence that the relative strength of the inter-layer exchange coupling J to the uniaxial anisotropy K controls a transition from an A-type antiferromagnetic order to a ferromagnetic-like metamagnetic state. A bi-layer Stoner-Wohlfarth model allows us to describe this evolution, as well as the typical angular dependence of specific signatures, such as the spin-flop transition of the uniaxial antiferromagnet and the switching fiel…
We theoretically study the magnetic proximity effect in the three dimensional (3D) topological insulator/ferromagnetic insulator (TI/FMI) structures in the context of possibility to manage the Dirac helical state in TI. Within continual approach based on the $\mathbf{kp}$ Hamiltonian we predict that, when 3D TI is brought into contact with 3D FMI, the ordinary bound state arising at the TI/FMI interface becomes spin polarized due to the orbital mixing at the boundary. Whereas the wave function of FMI decays into the TI bulk on the atomic scale, the induced exchange field, which is proportional…
We demonstrate the existence of Giant proximity magnetoresistance (PMR) effect in a graphene spin valve where spin polarization is induced by a nearby magnetic insulator. PMR calculations were performed for yttrium iron garnet (YIG), cobalt ferrite (CFO), and two europium chalcogenides EuO and EuS. We find a significant PMR (up to 100%) values defined as a relative change of graphene conductance with respect to parallel and antiparallel alignment of two proximity induced magnetic regions within graphene. Namely, for high Curie temperature (Tc) CFO and YIG insulators which are particularly impo…
The emergence of topological order in graphene is in great demand for the realization of quantum spin Hall states. Recently, it is theoretically proposed that the spin textures of surface states in topological insulator can be directly transferred to graphene by means of proximity effect. Here we report the observations of the topological proximity effect in the graphene-topological insulator Bi2Se3 heterojunctions via magnetotransport measurements. The coupling between the p_z orbitals of graphene and the p orbitals of surface states on the Bi2Se3 bottom surface can be enhanced by applying pe…
A recent report [Kiguchi {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 68}, 115402 (2003)] that the (111) surface of 5 MgO layers grown epitaxially on Ag(111) becomes metallic to reduce the electric dipole moment raises a question of what will happen when we have fewer MgO layers. Here we have revealed, first experimentally with electron energy-loss spectroscopy, that MgO(111) remains metallic even when one-layer thick, and theoretically with the density functional theory that the metallization should depend on the nature of the substrate. We further show, with a spin-density functional calculation, that a …
Crossed magnetic responses between spin and orbital angular momentum are studied in time-reversal symmetric topological insulators. Due to spin-orbit coupling in the quantum spin Hall systems and three-dimensional topological insulators, the magnetic susceptibility has crossed (intersectional) components between spin and orbital part of magnetism. In this study, the crossed susceptibility for the orbital magnetization is studied in two- and three-dimensional topological insulator models, in which an external magnetic field interacts with the electron spin by Zeeman coupling via distinct g-fact…
To date, the most widely-studied quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI) platform is achieved by dilute doping of magnetic ions into thin films of the alloyed tetradymite topological insulator (TI) (Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$)$_2$Te$_3$ (BST). In these films, long-range magnetic ordering of the transition metal substituants opens an exchange gap $Δ$ in the topological surface states, stabilizing spin-polarized, dissipationless edge channels with a nonzero Chern number $\mathcal{C}$. The long-range ordering of the spatially separated magnetic ions is itself mediated by electronic states in the host TI, l…
Compared to monolayer graphene, electrons in Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) have an additional layer degree of freedom, offering a platform for developing {\it layered spintronics} with the help of proximity-induced magnetism. Based on an effective phenomenological model, we systematically study the effect of this magnetism on the spin-dependent band structure near the Fermi energy and identify the magnetic phases induced in BLG by proximity with magnets. We show that spin polarization can develop in BLG due to this proximity effect. This spin polarization depends strongly on the layer …
In intrinsic magnetic topological insulators, Dirac surface state gaps are prerequisites for quantum anomalous Hall and axion insulating states. Unambiguous experimental identification of these gaps has proved to be a challenge, however. Here we use molecular beam epitaxy to grow intrinsic MnBi2Te4 thin films. Using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, we directly visualize the Dirac mass gap and its disappearance below and above the magnetic order temperature. We further reveal the interplay of Dirac mass gaps and local magnetic defects. We find that in high defect regions, the Dirac m…
The possible realization of dissipationless chiral edge current in a topological insulator / magnetic insulator heterostructure is based on the condition that the magnetic proximity exchange coupling at the interface is dominated by the Dirac surface states of the topological insulator. Here we report a polarized neutron reflectometry observation of Dirac electrons mediated magnetic proximity effect in a bulk-insulating topological insulator (Bi$_{0.2}$Sb$_{0.8}$)$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ / magnetic insulator EuS heterostructure. We are able to maximize the proximity induced magnetism by applying an elec…
An unusual photo-galvanic effect is predicted on the topological insulator surface when its semi-metallic electronic spectrum is modified by an adjacent ferromagnet. The effect is correlated with light absorption in a wide frequency range (from a few to hundreds of meV) and produces a pronounced response that is not only resonant to the photon energy but also tunable by an external electrical bias. The exceptionally strong peak photocurrent of the order of $μ$A/cm may be achieved at elevated temperatures with the illumination power of 1 W/cm$^2$ in the THz range on Bi$_2$Se$_3$. These advantag…
Magnetic insulators are a key resource for next-generation spintronic and topological devices. The family of layered metal halides promises ultrathin insulating multiferroics, spin liquids, and ferromagnets, but new characterization methods are required to unlock their potential. Here, we report tunneling through the layered magnetic insulator CrI3 as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field. We electrically detect the magnetic ground state and inter-layer coupling and observe a field-induced metamagnetic transition. The metamagnetic transition results in magnetoresistances of 95%,…
Magnetic exchange driven proximity effect at a magnetic insulator / topological insulator (MI/TI) interface provides a rich playground for novel phenomena as well as a way to realize low energy dissipation quantum devices. Here we report a dramatic enhancement of proximity exchange coupling in the MI / magnetic-TI EuS / Sb$_{2-x}$V$_x$Te$_3$ hybrid heterostructure, where V doping is used to drive the TI (Sb$_{2}$Te$_3$) magnetic. We observe an artificial antiferromagnetic-like structure near the MI/TI interface, which may account for the enhanced proximity coupling. The interplay between the p…
We present a comprehensive theoretical study of the static spin response in HgTe quantum wells, revealing distinctive behavior for the topologically nontrivial inverted structure. Most strikingly, the q=0 (long-wave-length) spin susceptibility of the undoped topological-insulator system is constant and equal to the value found for the gapless Dirac-like structure, whereas the same quantity shows the typical decrease with increasing band gap in the normal-insulator regime. We discuss ramifications for the ordering of localized magnetic moments present in the quantum well, both in the insulating…
When a topological insulator (TI) is in contact with a ferromagnet, both time reversal and inversion symmetries are broken at the interface. An energy gap is formed at the TI surface, and its electrons gain a net magnetic moment through short-range exchange interactions. Magnetic TIs can host various exotic quantum phenomena, such as massive Dirac fermions, Majorana fermions, the quantum anomalous Hall effect and chiral edge currents along the domain boundaries. However, selective measurement of induced magnetism at the buried interface has remained a challenge. Using magnetic second harmonic …
We identify topological aspects of the subextensive magnetic moment contributed by the surfaces of a three-dimensional crystallite -- assumed to be insulating in the bulk as well as on all surface facets, with trivial Chern invariants in the bulk. The geometric component of this subextensive moment is given by its derivative with respect to the chemical potential, at zero temperature and zero field, per unit surface area, and hence corresponds to the surface magnetic compressibility. The sum of the surface compressibilities contributed by two opposite facets of a cube-shaped crystallite is qua…
We theoretically study the magnetoresistance (MR) of two-dimensional massless Dirac electrons as found on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators (3D TIs) that is capped by a ferromagnetic insulator (FI). We calculate charge and spin transport by Kubo and Boltzmann theories, taking into account the ladder-vertex correction and the in-scattering due to normal and magnetic disorder. The induced exchange splitting is found to generate an electric conductivity that depends on the magnetization orientation, but its form is very different from both the anisotropic and spin Hall MR. T…

Inducing magnetism onto a topological crystalline insulator (TCI) has been predicted to result in several novel quantum electromagnetic effects. This is a consequence of the highly strain-sensitive band topology of such symmetry-protected systems. We thus show that placing the TCI surface of SnTe in proximity to EuS, a ferromagnetic insulator, induces magnetism at the interface between SnTe and EuS and thus breaks time-reversal-symmetry in the TCI. Magnetotransport experiments on SnTe-EuS-SnTe trilayer devices reveal a hysteretic lowering of the resistance at the TCI surface that coincides wit…
Topological insulators are bulk insulators with exotic surface states, protected under time-reversal symmetry, that hold promise in observing many exciting condensed-matter phenomena. In this report, we show that by having a topological insulator (Bi$_2$Se$_3$) in proximity to a magnetic insulator (EuS), a metal-to-insulator transition in the surface state, attributed to opening of an exchange gap, can be observed whose properties are tunable using bottom gate voltage and external magnetic field. Our study provides evidence of gate-controlled enhanced interface magnetism with the signature of …
The external controllability of the magnetic properties in topological insulators would be important both for fundamental and practical interests. Here we predict the electric-field control of ferromagnetism in a thin film of insulating magnetic topological insulators. The decrease of band inversion by the application of electric fields results in a reduction of magnetic susceptibility, and hence in the modification of magnetism. Remarkably, the electric field could even induce the magnetic quantum phase transition from ferromagnetism to paramagnetism. We further propose a topological transist…
Heterostructures of Dirac materials such as graphene and topological insulators provide interesting platforms to explore exotic quantum states of electrons in solids. Here we study the electronic structure of graphene-Sb2Te3 heterostructure using density functional theory and tight-binding methods. We show that the epitaxial graphene on Sb2Te3 turns into quantum spin-Hall phase due to its proximity to the topological insulating Sb2Te3. It is found that the epitaxial graphene develops a giant spin-orbit gap of about ~20 meV, which is about three orders of magnitude larger than that of pristine …
We study the magnetic proximity effect on a two-dimensional topological insulator in a CrI$_3$/SnI$_3$/CrI$_3$ trilayer structure. From first-principles calculations, the BiI$_3$-type SnI$_3$ monolayer without spin-orbit coupling has Dirac cones at the corners of the hexagonal Brillouin zone. With spin-orbit coupling turned on, it becomes a topological insulator, as revealed by a non-vanishing $Z_2$ invariant and an effective model from symmetry considerations. Without spin-orbit coupling, the Dirac points are protected if the CrI$_3$ layers are stacked ferromagnetically, and are gapped if the…
We propose a realization of chiral Majorana modes propagating on the hinges of a 3D antiferromagnetic topological insulator, which was recently theoretically predicted and experimentally confirmed in the tetradymite-type $\mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$-related ternary chalgogenides. These materials consist of ferromagnetically ordered 2D layers, whose magnetization direction alternates between neighboring layers, forming an antiferromagnetic order. Besides surfaces with a magnetic gap, there also exsist gapless surfaces with a single Dirac cone, which can be gapped out when proximity coupled to an $s$-w…
We report an experimental study of electron transport properties of MnSe/(Bi,Sb)2Te3 heterostructures, in which MnSe is an antiferromagnetic insulator, and (Bi,Sb)2Te3 is a three-dimensional topological insulator (TI). Strong magnetic proximity effect is manifested in the measurements of the Hall effect and longitudinal resistances. Our analysis shows that the gate voltage can substantially modify the anomalous Hall conductance, which exceeds 0.1 e2/h at temperature of 1.6 K and magnetic field of 5 T, even though only the top TI surface is in proximity to MnSe. This work suggests that heterost…
We formulate a continuum model to study the low-energy electronic structure of heterostructures formed by graphene on a strong three-dimensional topological insulator (TI) for the case of both commensurate and incommensurate stacking. The incommensurability can be due to a twist angle between graphene and the TI surface or a lattice mismatch between the two systems. We find that the proximity of the TI induces in graphene a strong enhancement of the spin-orbit coupling that can be tuned via the twist angle.
We theoretically study the magnetism induced by the proximity effect in the normal metal of ferromagnetic Josephson junction composed of two $s$-wave superconductors separated by ferromagnetic metal/normal metal/ferromagnetic metal junction (${S}/{F}/{N}/{F}/{S}$ junction). We calculate the magnetization in the $N$ by solving the Eilenberger equation. We show that the magnetization arises in the ${N}$ when the product of anomalous Green's functions of the spin-triplet even-frequency odd-parity Cooper pair and spin-singlet odd-frequency odd-parity Cooper pair in the ${N}$ has a finite value. Th…
We investigate Josephson and proximity effects on the surface of a topological insulator on which superconductors and a ferromagnet are deposited. The superconducting regions are described by the conventional BCS Hamiltonian, rather than the superconducting Dirac Hamiltonian. Junction interfaces are assumed to be dirty. We obtain analytical expressions of the Josephson current and the proximity-induced anomalous Green's function on the topological insulator. The dependence of the Josephson effect on the junction length, the temperature, the chemical potential and the magnetization is discussed…
We propose realizing the quantum anomalous Hall effect by proximity coupling graphene to an antiferromagnetic insulator that provides both broken time-reversal symmetry and spin-orbit coupling. We illustrate our idea by performing ab initio calculations for graphene adsorbed on the (111) surface of BiFeO3. In this case, we find that the proximity-induced exchange field in graphene is about 70 meV, and that a topologically nontrivial band gap is opened by Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The size of the gap depends on the separation between the graphene and the thin film substrate, which can be tune…
We show that hybrid structures of topological insulators and materials without topological protection can be employed to create perfectly conducting channels hosted in the non-topological part. These states inherit the topological protection from the proximity of the topological insulator but are more fragile to time-reversal symmetry breaking because of their extended character. We explore their formation in the band structure of model hybrid systems as well as realistic heterostructures involving HgTe/CdTe-based two-dimensional topological insulators. Using numerical quantum transport calcul…
We investigate the interactions between two identical magnetic impurities substituted into a graphene superlattice. Using a first-principles approach, we calculate the electronic and magnetic properties for transition-metal substituted graphene systems with varying spatial separation. These calculations are compared for three different magnetic impurities, manganese, chromium, and vanadium. We determine the electronic band structure, density of states, and Millikan populations (magnetic moment) for each atom, as well as calculate the exchange parameter between the two magnetic atoms as a funct…
We use magneto-conductivity to study the magnetic proximity effect on surface states of doped topological insulators. Our bilayers consist of a layer of Fe$_7$Se$_8$, which is a metallic ferrimagnet and a layer of Bi$_{0.8}$Sb$_{1.2}$Te$_{3}$ which is a highly hole-doped topological insulator. Using transport measurements and a modified Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka model, we show that the ferromagnet shortens significantly the effective coherence length of the surface states, suggesting that a gap is opened at the Dirac point. We show that the magnetically induced gap persists on surface states which…
We investigate the emergence and consequences of odd-frequency spin-triplet s-wave pairing in superconducting hybrid junctions at the edge of a two-dimensional topological insulator without any magnetism. More specifically, we consider several different normal-superconductor hybrid systems at the topological insulator edge, where spin-singlet s-wave superconducting pairing is proximity-induced from an external conventional superconductor. We perform fully analytical calculations and show that odd-frequency mixed spin-triplet s-wave pairing arises due to the unique spin-momentum locking in the …
We study Mott insulators of fermionic alkaline earth atoms, described by Heisenberg spin models with enhanced SU(N) symmetry. In dramatic contrast to SU(2) magnetism, more than two spins are required to form a singlet. On the square lattice, the classical ground state is highly degenerate and magnetic order is thus unlikely. In a large-N limit, we find a chiral spin liquid ground state with topological order and Abelian fractional statistics. We discuss its experimental detection. Chiral spin liquids with non-Abelian anyons may also be realizable with alkaline earth atoms.
We report the observation of the superconducting proximity effect in nanoribbons of a candidate topological insulator (Bi2Se3) which is interfaced with superconducting (tungsten) contacts. We observe a supercurrent and multiple Andreev reflections for channel lengths that are much longer than the inelastic and diffusive thermal lengths deduced from normal state transport. This suggests that the proximity effect couples preferentially to a ballistic surface transport channel, even in the presence of a coexisting diffusive bulk channel. When a magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the plane…
We study the proximity effect between an s-wave superconductor and the surface states of a strong topological insulator. The resulting two dimensional state resembles a spinless p_x+ip_y superconductor, but does not break time reversal symmetry. This state supports Majorana bound states at vortices. We show that linear junctions between superconductors mediated by the topological insulator form a non chiral 1 dimensional wire for Majorana fermions, and that circuits formed from these junctions provide a method for creating, manipulating and fusing Majorana bound states.
Superconducting topological crystalline insulators (TCI) are predicted to host new topological phases protected by crystalline symmetries, but available materials are insufficiently suitable for surface studies. To induce superconductivity at the surface of a prototypical TCI SnTe, we use molecular beam epitaxy to grow a heterostructure of SnTe and a high-Tc superconductor Fe(Te,Se), utilizing a 'buffer' layer to bridge the large lattice mismatch between SnTe and Fe(Te,Se). Using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we measure a prominent spectral gap on the surface …
The combination of superconductivity and spin-momentum locking at the interface between an s-wave superconductor and a three-dimensional topological insulator (3D-TI) is predicted to generate exotic p-wave topological superconducting phases that can host Majorana fermions. However, large bulk conductivities of previously investigated 3D-TI samples and Fermi level mismatches between 3D bulk superconductors and 2D topological surface states have thwarted significant progress. Here we employ bulk insulating topological insulators in proximity with two-dimensional superconductor NbSe$_2$ assembled…
The extreme versatility of two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) materials derives from their ability to exhibit new electronic properties when assembled in proximity with dissimilar crystals. For example, although graphene is inherently non-magnetic, recent work has reported a magnetic proximity effect in graphene interfaced with magnetic substrates, potentially enabling a pathway towards achieving a high-temperature quantum anomalous Hall effect. Here, we investigate heterostructures of graphene and chromium trihalide magnetic insulators (CrI$_3$, CrBr$_3$, and CrCl$_3$). Surprisingly, we are …
Enhancing the spin-orbit interaction in graphene, via proximity effects with topological insulators, could create a novel 2D system that combines nontrivial spin textures with high electron mobility. In order to engineer practical spintronics applications with such graphene/topological insulator (Gr/TI) heterostructures, an understanding of the hybrid spin-dependent properties is essential. {However to date, despite the large number of experimental studies on Gr/TI heterostructures reporting a great variety of remarkable (spin) transport phenomena, little is known about the true nature of the …
We report that thin films of a prototype topological insulator, Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$, can be epitaxially grown onto the (0001) surface of BaFe$_{12}$O$_{19}$(BaM), a magnetic insulator with high Curie temperature and large perpendicular anisotropy. In the Bi$_2$Se$_3$ thin films grown on non-magnetic substrates, classic weak antilocalization (WAL) is manifested as cusp-shaped positive magnetoresistance (MR) in perpendicular magnetic fields and parabola-shaped positive MR in parallel fields, whereas in Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$/BaM heterostructures the low field MR is parabola-shaped, which is positive in p…
The introduction of superconductivity to the Dirac surface states of a topological insulator leads to a topological superconductor, which may support topological quantum computing through Majorana zero modes. The development of a scalable material platform is key to the realization of topological quantum computing. Here we report on the growth and properties of high-quality (Bi,Sb)2Te3/graphene/gallium heterostructures. Our synthetic approach enables atomically sharp layers at both hetero-interfaces, which in turn promotes proximity-induced superconductivity that originates in the gallium film…
We study and classify the proximity-induced superconducting pairing in a topological insulator (TI)-superconductor (SC) hybrid structure for SCs with different symmetries. The Dirac surface state gives a coupling between spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairing amplitudes as well as pairing that is odd in frequency for p-wave SCs. We also find that all SCs induce pairing that is odd in both frequency and orbital (band) index, with oddness in frequency and orbital index being completely interchangeable. The different induced pairing amplitudes significantly modifies the density of states in the TI…
A topological insulator nanowire, proximity-coupled to an ordinary bulk s-wave superconductor and subject to a longitudinal applied magnetic field, is shown to realize a one-dimensional topological superconductor with unpaired Majorana fermions localized at both ends. This situation occurs under a wide range of conditions and constitutes what is possibly the most easily accessible physical realization of the elusive Majorana particles in a solid-state system.
We consider the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between magnetic impurities on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator with proximity induced superconductivity. A superconductor placed on the top of the topological insulator induces a gap in the surface electron states and gives rise to a long-ranged in-plane antiferromagnetic RKKY interaction. This interaction is frustrated due to strong spin-orbit coupling, decays as $1/r$ for $r<ξ$, where $r$ is the distance between two magnetic impurities and $ξ$ the superconducting coherence length, and dominates over the…
We report magnetotransport measurements in the NbN/ magnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 (MBT)/ NbN junction at low temperature. At 10 mK, the nonlinear current-voltage characteristic of the junction shows a tunneling behavior, indicating the existence of interfacial potential barriers within the heterostructure. Under an out of plane perpendicular magnetic field, a transition from negative to positive magnetoresistance (MR) is found when increasing the bias voltage. A proximity-induced superconducting gap is estimated to be 0.1meV by a pair of differential resistance dips. Moreover, the in…
Topological crystalline insulators represent a new state of matter, in which the electronic transport is governed by mirror-symmetry protected Dirac surface states. Due to the helical spin-polarization of these surface states, the proximity of topological crystalline matter to a nearby superconductor is predicted to induce unconventional superconductivity and thus to host Majorana physics. We report on the preparation and characterization of Nb-based superconducting quantum interference devices patterned on top of topological crystalline insulator SnTe thin films. The SnTe films show weak anti…
We study two microscopic models of topological insulators in contact with an $s$-wave superconductor. In the first model the superconductor and the topological insulator are tunnel coupled via a layer of scalar and of randomly oriented spin impurities. Here, we require that spin-flip tunneling dominates over spin-conserving one. In the second model the tunnel coupling is realized by an array of single-level quantum dots with randomly oriented spins. It is shown that the tunnel region forms a $π$-junction where the effective order parameter changes sign. Interestingly, due to the random spin or…
Controlling magnetic order in magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) is a key to developing spintronic applications with MTIs, and is commonly achieved by changing the magnetic doping concentration, which inevitably affects spin-orbit-coupling strength and the very topological properties. Here, we demonstrate tunable magnetic properties in topological heterostructures over a wide range, from a ferromagnetic phase with Curie temperature of around 100 K all the way to a paramagnetic phase, while keeping the overall chemical composition the same, by controlling the thickness of non-magnetic space…
