We report an experimental study of electron transport properties of MnSe/(Bi,Sb)2Te3 heterostructures, in which MnSe is an antiferromagnetic insulator, and (Bi,Sb)2Te3 is a three-dimensional topological insulator (TI). Strong magnetic proximity effect is manifested in the measurements of the Hall effect and longitudinal resistances. Our analysis shows that the gate voltage can substantially modify the anomalous Hall conductance, which exceeds 0.1 e2/h at temperature of 1.6 K and magnetic field of 5 T, even though only the top TI surface is in proximity to MnSe. This work suggests that heterostructures based on antiferromagnetic insulators provide a promising platform for investigating a wide range of topological spintronic phenomena.

We formulate a continuum model to study the low-energy electronic structure of heterostructures formed by graphene on a strong three-dimensional topological insulator (TI) for the case of both commensurate and incommensurate stacking. The incommensurability can be due to a twist angle between graphene and the TI surface or a lattice mismatch between the two systems. We find that the proximity of the TI induces in graphene a strong enhancement of the spin-orbit coupling that can be tuned via the twist angle.
Quantum light emitters (QEs) capable of generating single photons of well-defined circular polarization could enable non-reciprocal single photon devices and deterministic spin-photon interfaces critical for realizing complex quantum networks. To date, emission of such chiral quantum light has been achieved via the application of intense external magnetic field electrical/optical injection of spin polarized carriers/excitons, or coupling with complex photonic/meta-structures. Here we report free-space generation of highly chiral single photons from QEs created in monolayer WSe2 - NiPS3 heteros…
Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals heterostructures serve as a promising platform to exploit various physical phenomena in a diverse range of novel spintronic device applications. The efficient spin injection is the prerequisite for these devices. The recent discovery of magnetic 2D materials leads to the possibility of fully 2D van der Waals spintronics devices by implementing spin injection through magnetic proximity effect (MPE). Here, we report the investigation of magnetic proximity effect in 2D CrBr3/graphene van der Waals heterostructures, which is probed by Zeeman spin Hall effect thro…
Van der Waals heterostructures combining two-dimensional magnetic and semiconducting layers constitute a promising platform for interfacing magnetism, electronics, and optics. Here, we use resonant optical reflection spectroscopy to the observe magnetic proximity effect in a gate-tunable MoSe$_2$/CrBr$_3$ heterostructure. High quality of the interface leads to a giant zero-field splitting of the K and K' valley excitons in MoSe$_2$, equivalent to an external magnetic field of 12 T, with a weak but distinct electric field dependence that hints at potential for electrical control of magnetizatio…
The possible realization of dissipationless chiral edge current in a topological insulator / magnetic insulator heterostructure is based on the condition that the magnetic proximity exchange coupling at the interface is dominated by the Dirac surface states of the topological insulator. Here we report a polarized neutron reflectometry observation of Dirac electrons mediated magnetic proximity effect in a bulk-insulating topological insulator (Bi$_{0.2}$Sb$_{0.8}$)$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ / magnetic insulator EuS heterostructure. We are able to maximize the proximity induced magnetism by applying an elec…
Van der Waals heterostructures composed of multiple few layer crystals allow the engineering of novel materials with predefined properties. As an example, coupling graphene weakly to materials with large spin orbit coupling (SOC) allows to engineer a sizeable SOC in graphene via proximity effects. The strength of the proximity effect depends on the overlap of the atomic orbitals, therefore, changing the interlayer distance via hydrostatic pressure can be utilized to enhance the interlayer coupling between the layers. In this work, we report measurements on a graphene/WSe$_2$ heterostructure ex…
Magnetic proximity effects are crucial ingredients for engineering spintronic, superconducting, and topological phenomena in heterostructures. Such effects are highly sensitive to the interfacial electronic properties, such as electron wave function overlap and band alignment. The recent emergence of van der Waals (vdW) magnets enables the possibility of tuning proximity effects via designing heterostructures with atomically clean interfaces. In particular, atomically thin CrI3 exhibits layered antiferromagnetism, where adjacent ferromagnetic monolayers are antiferromagnetically coupled. Explo…
Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures formed by two-dimensional magnets and semiconductors have provided a fertile ground for fundamental science and for spintronics. We present first-principles calculations finding a proximity exchange splitting of 14 meV equivalent to an effective Zeeman field of 120 T in the vdW magnet-semiconductor heterostructure MoS$_2$/CrBr$_3$, leading to a 2D spin-polarized half-metal with carrier densities ranging up to $10^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$. We consequently explore the effect of large exchange coupling on the electronic bandstructure when the magnetic layer hosts chira…
We report on first-principle calculations on magnetic proximity effect in a van der Waals heterostructure formed by a graphene monolayer induced by its interaction with a two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnet (chromium tribromide, CrBr3). We observe that the magnetic proximity effect arising from the spin-dependent interlayer coupling depends sensitively on the interlayer electronic configuration. The proximity effect results in spin polarization of graphene orbital by up to 63.6 %, together with a miniband splitting band gap of about 73.4 meV and 8% enhancement in magnetic moment (3.47$μ$B/cell) i…
Proximity effects in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals heterostructures offer controllable ways to tailor the electronic band structure of adjacent materials. Exchange proximity in particular is important for making materials magnetic without hosting magnetic ions. Such synthetic magnets could be used for studying magnetotransport in high-mobility 2D materials, or magneto-optics in highly absorptive nominally nonmagnetic semiconductors. Using first-principles calculations, we show that the proximity exchange in monolayer MoSe$_2$ and WSe$_2$ due to ferromagnetic monolayer CrI$_3$ can be tuned…
Van-der-Waals heterostructures have become a paradigm for designing new materials and devices, in which specific functionalities can be tailored by combining the properties of the individual 2D layers. A single layer of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) is an excellent complement to graphene (Gr), since the high quality of charge and spin transport in Gr is enriched with the large spin-orbit coupling of the TMD via proximity effect. The controllable spin-valley coupling makes these heterostructures particularly attractive for spintronic and opto-valleytronic applications. In this work, we …
Enhancing the spin-orbit interaction in graphene, via proximity effects with topological insulators, could create a novel 2D system that combines nontrivial spin textures with high electron mobility. In order to engineer practical spintronics applications with such graphene/topological insulator (Gr/TI) heterostructures, an understanding of the hybrid spin-dependent properties is essential. {However to date, despite the large number of experimental studies on Gr/TI heterostructures reporting a great variety of remarkable (spin) transport phenomena, little is known about the true nature of the …
Motivated by the recent findings of unconventional superconductivity in $\mathrm{CoSi_2 / TiSi_2}$ heterostructures, we study the effect of interface induced Rashba spin orbit coupling on the conductance of a three terminal "T" shape superconducting device. We calculate the differential conductance for this device within the quasi-classical formalism that includes the mixing of triplet-singlet pairing due to the Rashba spin orbit coupling. We discuss our result in the light of the conductance spectra reported by Chiu {\it et al.} for $\mathrm{CoSi_2 / TiSi_2}$ heterostructures.
The weak intrinsic spin-orbit coupling in graphene can be greatly enhanced by proximity coupling. Here we report on the proximity-induced spin-orbit coupling in graphene transferred by hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) onto the topological insulator Bi$_{1.5}$Sb$_{0.5}$Te$_{1.7}$Se$_{1.3}$ (BSTS) which was grown on a hBN substrate by vapor solid synthesis. Phase coherent transport measurements, revealing weak localization, allow us to extract the carrier density-dependent phase coherence length $l_ϕ$. While $l_ϕ$ increases with increasing carrier density in the hBN/graphene/hBN reference sample, i…
Graphene/MoS2 heterostructures are formed by combining the nanosheets of graphene and monolayer MoS2. The electronic features of both constituent monolayers are rather well-preserved in the resultant heterostructure due to the weak van der Waals interaction between the layers. However, the proximity of MoS2 induces strong spin orbit coupling effect of strength ~1 meV in graphene, which is nearly three orders of magnitude larger than the intrinsic spin orbit coupling of pristine graphene. This opens a bandgap in graphene and further causes anticrossings of the spin-nondegenerate bands near the …
Coupling graphene's excellent electron and spin transport properties with higher spin-orbit coupling material allows tackling the hurdle of spin manipulation in graphene, due to the proximity to van-der-Waals layers. Here we use magneto transport measurements to study the electron spin resonance on a combined system of graphene and MoS2 at 1.5K. The electron spin resonance measurements are performed in the frequency range of 18-33GHz, which allows us to determine the g-factor in the system. We measure average g-factor of 1.91 for our hybrid system which is a considerable shift compared to what…

Electrical switching of antiferromagnets is an exciting recent development in spintronics, which promises active antiferromagnetic devices with high speed and low energy cost. In this emerging field, there is an active debate about the mechanisms of current-driven switching of antiferromagnets. Harmonic characterization is a powerful tool to quantify current-induced spin-orbit torques and spin Seebeck effect in heavy-metal/ferromagnet systems. However, the harmonic measurement technique has never been verified in antiferromagnetic heterostructures. Here, we report for the first time harmonic m…
Topological insulators (TIs) are bulk insulators that possess robust helical conducting states along their interfaces with conventional insulators. A tremendous research effort has recently been devoted to TI-based heterostructures, in which conventional proximity effects give rise to a series of exotic physical phenomena. This paper reviews our recent works on the potential existence of topological proximity effects at the interface between a topological insulator and a normal insulator or other topologically trivial systems. Using first-principles approaches, we have established the tunabili…
Current noise provides useful information on correlations important for transport properties of mesoscopic systems. Of particular interest, both experimentally and theoretically, are heterostructures of normal metals and superconductors. We use an extended Keldysh-Green's function approach to calculate the current correlations fully accounting for the superconducting proximity effect. The shot noise in diffusive wires shows a reentrant behaviour, similar to the reentrance effect of the conductance. At intermediate energies the effective charge (the ratio of the differential noise and different…
Topological insulators (TI) are bulk insulators that possess robust chiral conducting states along their interfaces with normal insulators. A tremendous research effort has recently been devoted to TI-based heterostructures, in which conventional proximity effects give rise to many exotic physical phenomena. Here we establish the potential existence of "topological proximity effects" at the interface of a topological graphene nanoribbon (GNR) and a normal GNR. Specifically, we show that the location of the topological edge states exhibits versatile tunability as a function of the interface ori…
We demonstrate the transfer of the superconducting properties of NbTi---a large-gap high-critical-field superconductor---into an InAs heterostructure via a thin intermediate layer of epitaxial Al. Two device geometries, a Josephson junction and a gate-defined quantum point contact, are used to characterize interface transparency and the two-step proximity effect. In the Josephson junction, multiple Andreev reflection reveal near-unity transparency, with an induced gap $Δ^*=0.50~\mathrm{meV}$ and a critical temperature of $7.8~\mathrm{K}$. Tunneling spectroscopy yields a hard induced gap in the…
We study the anomalous Hall-like effect (AHLE) and the effective anisotropic magnetoresistance (EAMR) in antiferromagnetic γ -IrMn3/Y3Fe5O12(YIG) and Pt/YIG heterostructures. For γ -IrMn3/YIG, the EAMR and the AHLE resistivity change sign with temperature due to the competition between the spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) and the magnetic proximity effect (MPE) induced by the interfacial antiferromagnetic uncompensated magnetic moment. In contrast, for Pt/YIG the AHLE resistivity changes sign with temperature whereas no sign change is observed in the EAMR. This is because the MPE and the SMR …
The quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) is an exotic quantum phenomenon originating from dissipation-less chiral channels at the sample edge. While the QAHE has been observed in magnetically doped topological insulators (TIs), exploiting magnetic proximity effect on the TI surface from adjacent ferromagnet layers may provide an alternative approach to the QAHE by opening an exchange gap with less disorder than that in the doped system. Nevertheless, the engineering of a favorable heterointerface that realizes the QAHE based on the magnetic proximity effect remains to be achieved. Here, we rep…
A van der Waals heterostructure combined with intrinsic magnetism and topological orders have recently paved attractive avenues to realize quantum anomalous Hall effects. In this work, using first-principles calculations and effective model analysis, we propose that the robust quantum anomalous Hall states with sizable band gaps emerge in the van der Waals heterostructure of germanene/Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$. This heterostructure possesses high thermodynamic stability, thus facilitating its experimental fabrication. Furthermore, we uncover that the proximity effect enhances the coupling between the…
We investigate the proximity spin-orbit and exchange couplings in ABA and ABC trilayer graphene encapsulated within monolayers of semiconducting transition-metal dichalcogenides and the ferromagnetic semiconductor Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$. Employing first-principles calculations we obtain the electronic structures of the multilayer stacks and extract the relevant proximity-induced orbital and spin interaction parameters by fitting the low-energy bands to model Hamiltonians. We also demonstrate the tunability of the proximity effects by a transverse electric field. Using the model Hamiltonians we als…
We analyse the possibility of the appearance of spontaneous currents in proximated superconducting/normal metal (S/N) heterostructure when Cooper pairs penetrate into the normal metal from the superconductor. In particular, we calculate the free energy of the S/N structure. We show that whereas the free energy of the N film $F_{N}$ in the presence of the proximity effect increases compared to the normal state, the total free energy, which includes the boundary term $F_{B}$, decreases. The condensate current decreases $F_{N}$, but increases the total free energy making the current-carrying stat…

We investigate the spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) at room temperature in thin film heterostructures of antiferromagnetic, insulating, (0001)-oriented alpha-Fe2O3 (hematite) and Pt. We measure their longitudinal and transverse resistivities while rotating an applied magnetic field of up to 17T in three orthogonal planes. For out-of-plane magnetotransport measurements, we find indications for a multidomain antiferromagnetic configuration whenever the field is aligned along the film normal. For in-plane field rotations, we clearly observe a sinusoidal resistivity oscillation characteristic for…
We investigate the proximity-induced exchange coupling in transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), originating from spin injector geometries composed of hexagonal boron-nitride (hBN) and ferromagnetic (FM) cobalt (Co) or nickel (Ni), from first-principles. We employ a minimal tight-binding Hamiltonian that captures the low energy bands of the TMDCs around K and K' valleys, to extract orbital, spin-orbit, and exchange parameters. The TMDC/hBN/FM heterostructure calculations show that due to the hBN buffer layer, the band structure of the TMDC is preserved, with an additional proximity-induced …
We propose realizing the quantum anomalous Hall effect by proximity coupling graphene to an antiferromagnetic insulator that provides both broken time-reversal symmetry and spin-orbit coupling. We illustrate our idea by performing ab initio calculations for graphene adsorbed on the (111) surface of BiFeO3. In this case, we find that the proximity-induced exchange field in graphene is about 70 meV, and that a topologically nontrivial band gap is opened by Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The size of the gap depends on the separation between the graphene and the thin film substrate, which can be tune…
Spin valves consisting of heterostructures of single-layer hexagonal crystal on an antiferromagnetic substrate or of bilayer hexagonal crystal intercalated between two (anti)ferromagnetic insulators, with the current-in-plane geometry, are proposed. The two-dimensional hexagonal crystals such as graphene, silicene, germanene, and stanene are modeled by the tight binding model of honeycomb lattice. The magnetization orientation of the antiferromagnetic substrate(s) controls the band gap and topological properties of bulk, which in turn control the transport of three types of spin valve geometri…
Among Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides, mono and few-layers thick VSe2 has gained much recent attention following claims of intrinsic room-temperature ferromagnetism in this system, which have nonetheless proved controversial. Here, we address the magnetic and chemical properties of Fe/VSe2 heterostructure by combining element sensitive absorption spectroscopy and photoemission spectroscopy. Our x-ray magnetic circular dichroism results confirm recent findings that both native mono/few-layer and bulk VSe2 do not show any signature of an intrinsic ferromagnetic ordering. Nonetheless, we find th…
We observe proximity-induced superconductivity in the \textit{in situ} prepared heterostructures constructed by topological insulator Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ thin films and high-temperature cuprate superconductors Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$. The superconducting gap maximum is about 7.6 meV on the surface of Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ thin films with a thickness of two quintuple layers, and the gap value decreases with an increase in the film thickness. Moreover, the quasiparticle interference data show a clear evidence of a twofold symmetric superconducting gap with gap minima along one pair of the pr…
Semiconducting ferromagnet-nonmagnet interfaces in van der Waals heterostructures present a unique opportunity to investigate magnetic proximity interactions dependent upon a multitude of phenomena including valley and layer pseudospins, moiré periodicity, or exceptionally strong Coulomb binding. Here, we report a charge-state dependency of the magnetic proximity effects between MoSe$_2$ and CrBr$_3$ in photoluminescence, whereby the valley polarization of the MoSe$_2$ trion state conforms closely to the local CrBr$_3$ magnetization, while the neutral exciton state remains insensitive to the f…
Unidirectional spin Hall magnetoresistance (USMR) has been widely reported in the heavy metal / ferromagnet (HM/FM) bilayer systems. We observe the USMR in the Pt/α-Fe2O3 bilayers where the α-Fe2O3 is an antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator. Systematic field and temperature dependent measurements confirm the magnonic origin of the USMR. The appearance of AFM-USMR is driven by the imbalance of creation and annihilation of AFM magnons by spin orbit torque due to thermal random field. However, unlike its ferromagnetic counterpart, theoretical modeling reveals that the USMR in Pt/α-Fe2O3 is determine…
Monolayer valley semiconductors, such as tungsten diselenide (WSe$_2$), possess valley pseudospin degrees of freedom that are optically addressable but degenerate in energy. Lifting the energy degeneracy by breaking time-reversal symmetry is vital for valley manipulation. This has been realized by directly applying magnetic fields or via pseudo-magnetic fields generated by intense circularly polarized optical pulses. However, sweeping large magnetic fields is impractical for devices, and the pseudo-magnetic fields are only effective in the presence of ultrafast laser pulses. The recent rise of…
We study the superconducting properties of the thin film BCS superconductor proximity coupled to a magnetically doped topological insulator(TI). Using the mean field theory, we show that Fulde-Ferrell(FF) pairing can be induced in the conventional superconductor by having inverse proximity effect(IPE). This occurs when the IPE of the TI to the superconductor is large enough that the normal band of the superconductor possesses a proximity induced spin-orbit coupling and magnetization. We find that the energetics of the different pairings are dependent on the coupling strength between the TI and…
Proximity-induced fine features and spin-textures of the electronic bands in graphene-based van der Waals heterostructures can be explored from the point of tailoring a twist angle. Here we study spin-orbit coupling and exchange coupling engineering of graphene states in the proximity of 1T-TaS$_2$ not triggering the twist, but a charge density wave in 1T-TaS$_2$-a realistic low-temperature phase. Using density functional theory and effective model we found that the emergence of the charge density wave in 1T-TaS$_2$ significantly enhances Rashba spin-orbit splitting in graphene and tilts the s…
Superconducting proximity effects in graphene have received a great deal of attention for over a decade now. This has unveiled a plethora of exotic effects linked to the specificities of graphene's electronic properties. The vast majority of the related studies are based on conventional, low-temperature superconducting metals with isotropic $s$-wave pairing. Here we review recent advances made on the less studied case of unconventional high-temperature superconducting cuprates. These are characterized by an anisotropic $d$-wave pairing, whose interplay with Dirac electrons yields very rich phy…
The introduction of superconductivity to the Dirac surface states of a topological insulator leads to a topological superconductor, which may support topological quantum computing through Majorana zero modes. The development of a scalable material platform is key to the realization of topological quantum computing. Here we report on the growth and properties of high-quality (Bi,Sb)2Te3/graphene/gallium heterostructures. Our synthetic approach enables atomically sharp layers at both hetero-interfaces, which in turn promotes proximity-induced superconductivity that originates in the gallium film…
Thermal activation tends to destroy the magnetic stability of small magnetic nanoparticles, with crucial implications in ultra-high density recording among other applications. Here we demonstrate that low blocking temperature ferromagnetic (FM) Co nanoparticles (TB<70 K) become magnetically stable above 400 K when embedded in a high Néel temperature antiferromagnetic (AFM) NiO matrix. The origin of this remarkable TB enhancement is due to a magnetic proximity effect between a thin CoO shell (with low Néel temperature, TN; and high anisotropy, KAFM) surrounding the Co nanoparticles and the NiO …
Interference of proximity induced superconducting correlations in mesoscopic metallic rings is sensitive to the magnetic flux $Φ$ inside these rings. This is the reason for magnetoconductance oscillations in such systems. We detected experimentally and explained theoretically a novel effect: the phase of these oscillations can switch between 0 and $π$ depending on the resistance of intermetallic interfaces and temperature. The effect is due to a nontrivial interplay between the proximity induced enhancement of the local conductivity and the proximity induced suppression of the density of state…

We then focus on graphene-based Josephson junctions, one of the most versatile superconducting quantum devices. The various theoretical methods that have been developed to describe graphene Josephson junctions are examined, together with their advantages and limitations, followed by a discus…
