We propose a realization of chiral Majorana modes propagating on the hinges of a 3D antiferromagnetic topological insulator, which was recently theoretically predicted and experimentally confirmed in the tetradymite-type $\mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$-related ternary chalgogenides. These materials consist of ferromagnetically ordered 2D layers, whose magnetization direction alternates between neighboring layers, forming an antiferromagnetic order. Besides surfaces with a magnetic gap, there also exsist gapless surfaces with a single Dirac cone, which can be gapped out when proximity coupled to an $s$-wave superconductor. On the sharing edges between the two types of gapped surfaces, the chiral Majorana modes emerge. We further propose experimental signatures of these Majoana hinge modes in terms of two-terminal conductance measurements.
Motivated by recent experiments on FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$, we construct an explicit minimal model of an iron-based superconductor with band inversion at the $Z$ point and non-topological bulk $s_{\pm}$ pairing. While there has been considerable interest in Majorana zero modes localized at vortices in such systems, we find that our model - without any vortices - intrinsically supports 1D helical Majorana modes localized at the hinges between (001) and (100) or (010) surfaces, suggesting that this is a viable platform for observing "higher-order" topological superconductivity. We provide a general…
Second-order topological superconductors host Majorana corner and hingemodes in contrast to conventional edge and surface modes in two and three dimensions. However, the realization of such second-order corner modes usually demands unconventional superconducting pairing or complicated junctions or layered structures. Here we show that Majorana corner modes could be realized using a 2D quantum spin Hall insulator in proximity contact with an $s$-wave superconductor and subject to an in-plane Zeeman field. Beyond a critical value, the in-plane Zeeman field induces opposite effective Dirac masses…
As platforms of Majorana modes, topological insulator (quantum anomalous Hall insulator)/superconductor (SC) heterostructures have attracted tremendous attention over the past decade. Here we substitute the topological insulator by its higher-order counterparts. Concretely, we consider second-order topological insulators (SOTIs) without time-reversal symmetry and investigate SOTI/SC heterostructures in both two and three dimensions. Remarkably, we find that such novel heterostructures provide natural realizations of second-order topological superconductors (SOTSCs) which host Majorana corner m…
We identify three-dimensional higher-order superconductors characterized by the coexistence of one-dimensional Majorana hinge states and gapless surface sates. We show how such superconductors can be obtained starting from the model of a spinful quadrupolar semimetal with two orbitals and adding an s-wave superconducting pairing term. By considering all the possible s-wave pairings satisfying Fermi-Dirac statistics we obtain six different superconducting models. We find that for two of these models a flat-band of hinge Majorana states coexist with surface states, and that these models have a n…
Since the proposal of monopole Cooper pairing in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 067003 (2018)], considerable research efforts have been dedicated to the study of Cooper pairing order parameters constrained (or obstructed) by the nontrivial normal-state band topology at Fermi surfaces in 3D systems. In the current work, we generalize the topologically obstructed pairings between Chern states (like the monopole Cooper pairing) by proposing Euler obstructed Cooper pairing in 3D systems. The Euler obstructed Cooper pairing widely exists between two Fermi surfaces with nontrivial band topology characterize…
The surface of a higher order topological insulator (HOTI) comprises a two-dimensional topological insulator (TI) with broken inversion symmetry, whose mass is determined by the microscopic details of the surface such as surface potentials and termination. It hosts a helical mode pinned to selected hinges where the surface gap changes its sign. We study the effect of perturbations that break time-reversal and particle-conservation on this helical mode, such as a Zeeman field and a proximate superconductor. We find that in contrast to the helical modes of inversion symmetric TIs, which are gapp…
SnTe materials are one of the most flexible material platforms for exploring the interplay of topology and different types of symmetry breaking. We study symmetry-protected topological states in SnTe nanowires in the presence of various combinations of Zeeman field, s-wave superconductivity and inversion-symmetry-breaking field. We uncover the origin of robust corner states and hinge states in the normal state. In the presence of superconductivity, we find inversion-symmetry-protected gapless bulk Majorana modes, which give rise to quantized thermal conductance in ballistic wires. By introduci…
Exotic states of topological materials are challenging or impossible to create under ambient conditions.1-4 Moreover, it is unclear whether topological superconductivity, as a critical element for topological quantum computing, exists in any naturally occurring materials.5-7 Although these problems can be overcome through the combination of materials in heterostructures, there are still many requisites, such as low temperatures and specific magnetic fields.8,9 Herein, an intrinsic topological superconductor that does not depend on particular external conditions is demonstrated. It is accomplis…
The Majorana edge states of the Kitaev chain model have attracted extensive attention on their stability and experimental realization. One of the interesting aspects is finding the exotic proximity effect, which guarantees the presence of the Majorana modes, further enables efficient braidings between them. In this paper, we explore the superconducting proximity effect for quasi-periodic quantum wires and discuss how quasi-periodic patterns affect the stability of the Majorana modes. Considering the Kitaev chain model of the one-dimensional quasi-periodic system, we discuss the pattern-depende…
Combination of proximity-induced superconductivity and ferromagnetic exchange field in a two-dimensional square-lattice antiferromagnet with spin-orbit coupling and nonsymmorphic symmetry can induce a topological superconductor phase with chiral Majorana edge states. The lattice model of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian was applied to study the phase diagram of bulks and chiral Majorana edge states in nanoribbons. By numerically studying the phase diagram, we found that the non-uniformity of either the superconducting pairing parameters or the exchange field at the two sublattices is…
We study a realistic Floquet topological superconductor, a periodically driven nanowire proximitized to an equilibrium s-wave superconductor. Due to both strong energy and density fluctuations caused from the superconducting proximity effect, the Floquet Majorana wire becomes dissipative. We show that the Floquet band structure is still preserved in this dissipative system. In particular, we find that both the Floquet Majorana zero and pi modes can no longer be simply described by the Floquet topological band theory. We also propose an effective model to simplify the calculation of the lifetim…
We theoretically study transport properties of nanowires with the Dresselhaus [110] spin-orbit coupling under the in-plane Zeeman potential and the proximity-induced s-wave pair potential. In the topologically nontrivial phase, the nanowire hosts the Majorana fermions at its edges and the number of the Majorana bound states is equal to the number propagating channels (Nc). When we attach a normal metal to the superconductor, such Majorana bound states penetrate into the dirty normal segment and form the Nc resonant transmission channels there. We show that chiral symmetry of the electronic sta…
We study a semiconductor wire with strong spin-orbit coupling, which is proximity-coupled to a superconductor with chemical potential disorder. When tunneling at the semiconductor- superconductor interface is very weak, it is known that disorder in the superconductor does not affect the induced superconductivity nor, therefore, the effective topological superconductivity that emerges above a critical magnetic field. We demonstrate nonperturbatively how this result breaks down with stronger proximity coupling by obtaining the low-energy (i.e., subgap) excitation spectrum through direct numerica…
We study the low-energy bandstructure of armchair and small-bandgap semiconducting carbon nanotubes with proximity-induced superconducting pairing when a spiral magnetic field creates strong effective spin-orbit interactions from the Zeeman term and a periodic potential from the orbital part. We find that gapless Dirac fermions can be generated by variation of a single parameter. For a semiconducting tube with the field in the same plane, a non-degenerate zero mode at momentum k=0 can be induced, allowing for the generation of topologically protected Majorana fermion end states.
We propose a novel heterostructure to achieve chiral topological superconductivity in 2D. A substrate with a large Rashba spin-orbit coupling energy is brought in proximity to a twisted bilayer of thin films exfoliated from a high-temperature cuprate superconductor. The combined system is then exposed to an out-of-plane magnetic field. The rare $d + id$ pairing symmetry expected to occur in such a system allows for nontrivial topology; specifically, in contrast to the case of the twisted bilayer in isolation, the substrate induces an odd Chern number. The resulting phase is characterized by th…
A topological insulator nanowire, proximity-coupled to an ordinary bulk s-wave superconductor and subject to a longitudinal applied magnetic field, is shown to realize a one-dimensional topological superconductor with unpaired Majorana fermions localized at both ends. This situation occurs under a wide range of conditions and constitutes what is possibly the most easily accessible physical realization of the elusive Majorana particles in a solid-state system.

We present a detailed theoretical study of chiral topological superconductor phases in proximity-superconducting graphene systems based on an effective model inspired by DFT simulations. Inducing s-wave superconductivity to quantum anomalous Hall effect systems leads to chiral topological superconductors. For out-of-plane magnetization we find topological superconducting phases with even numbers of chiral Majorana fermions per edge which is correlated to the opening of a nontrivial gap in the bulk system in the $\mathrm{ K}$-points and their connection under particle-hole symmetry. We show tha…
We study the proximity effect between an s-wave superconductor (SC) and the surface states of a Weyl semimetal. An interesting two-dimensional SC forms in such an interface with properties resembling in certain aspects the Fu-Kane superconductor with some notable differences. In a Weyl semimetal with unbroken time reversal symmetry the interface SC supports completely flat Majorana bands in a linear Josephson junction with a π phase difference. We discuss stability of these bands against disorder and propose ways in which they can be observed experimentally.

We study the proximity effect between an s-wave superconductor and the surface states of a strong topological insulator. The resulting two dimensional state resembles a spinless p_x+ip_y superconductor, but does not break time reversal symmetry. This state supports Majorana bound states at vortices. We show that linear junctions between superconductors mediated by the topological insulator form a non chiral 1 dimensional wire for Majorana fermions, and that circuits formed from these junctions provide a method for creating, manipulating and fusing Majorana bound states.
High density superconductor-semiconductor-superconductor junctions have a small induced superconducting gap due to the quasiparticle trajectories with a large momentum parallel to the junction having a very long flight time. Because a large induced gap protects Majorana modes, these long trajectories constrain Majorana devices to a low electron density. We show that a zigzag-shaped geometry eliminates these trajectories, allowing the robust creation of Majorana states with both the induced gap $E_\textrm{gap}$ and the Majorana size $ξ_\textrm{M}$ improved by more than an order of magnitude for…
We propose a simple model consisting of a magnetic domain wall proximity-coupled to an $s$-wave superconductor for realization of Majorana zero-energy modes. A spin-dependent gauge transformation translates the rotating magnetic profile through the domain wall to effective spin-orbit and Zeeman terms. The Hamiltonian breaks time reversal and chiral symmetries, while preserving particle-hole symmetry, placing itself into topological D class characterized by the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ topological invariant for quasi one-dimensional system. The low-energy sector of the model maps to the one isomorphic …
A minimal model for the hybrid superconductor-semiconductor nanowire Majorana platform is developed that fully captures the effects of the low-energy renormalization of the nanowire modes arising from the presence of the parent superconductor. In this model, the parent superconductor is an active component that participates explicitly in the low-energy physics, not just a passive partner that only provides proximity-induced Cooper pairs for the nanowire. This treatment on an equal footing of the superconductor and the semiconductor has become necessary in view of recent experiments, which do n…
We theoretically study superconducting proximity effect between a topological insulator (TI) and a high-temperature d-wave superconductor (dSC). When the TI-dSC heterostructure violates 90 degree-rotation and certain reflection symmetries, we show that a sizable s-wave pairing, coexisting with a d-wave one, emerges in the proximity-induced superconductivity in the TI's top surface states. Weak disorder further suppresses d-wave pairing but not s-wave one in the TI's surface states. More importantly, the pairing gap in surface states is found to be nodeless and nearly-isotropic when the Fermi p…
Graphene nanoribbons with armchair edges are studied for externally enhanced, but realistic parameter values: enhanced Rashba spin-orbit coupling due to proximity to a transition metal dichalcogenide like WS$_{2}$, and enhanced Zeeman field due to exchange coupling with a magnetic insulator like EuS under applied magnetic field. The presence of s--wave superconductivity, induced either by proximity or by decoration with alkali metal atoms like Ca or Li, leads to a topological superconducting phase with Majorana end modes. The topological phase is highly sensitive to the application of uniaxial…
Interfacing a topological insulator (TI) with an $s$-wave superconductor (SC) is a promising material platform that offers the possibility to realize a topological superconductor through which Majorana-based topologically protected qubits can be engineered. In our computational study of the prototypical SC/TI interface between Nb and Bi$_2$Te$_3$, we identify the benefits and possible bottlenecks of this potential Majorana material platform. Bringing Nb in contact with the TI film induces charge doping from the SC to the TI, which shifts the Fermi level into the TI conduction band. For thick T…
High-order topological phases host robust boundary states at the boundary of the boundary, which can be interpreted from their boundary topology. In this work, considering the interplay between superconductors and magnetic fields to gap the surface states of three-dimensional weak topological insulators, we show that second-order topological superconductors (TSCs) featuring helical or chiral Majorana hinge modes and third-order TSC featuring Majorana corner modes can be realized. Remarkably, the higher-order TSCs in our models can be attributed to their certain boundaries, surfaces, or hinges,…
Time-reversal breaking topological superconductors are new states of matter which can support Majorana zero modes at the edge. In this paper, we propose a new realization of one-dimensional topological superconductivity and Majorana zero modes. The proposed system consists of a monolayer of transition metal dichalcogenides MX2 (M=Mo, W; X=S, Se) on top of a superconducting substrate. Based on first-principles calculations, we show that a zigzag edge of the monolayer MX2 terminated by metal atom M has edge states with strong spin-orbit coupling and spontaneous magnetization. By proximity coupli…
Doped strong topological insulators are one of the most promising candidates to realize a fully gapped three-dimensional topological superconductor (TSC). In this letter, we revisit this system and reveal a possibility for higher-order topology which was previously missed. We find that over a finite-range of doping, the Fu-Berg superconducting pairing can give rise to both Majorana surface states, and nodal hinge states. Interestingly, we observe the coexistence of surface and hinge modes in the superconducting state only when there are both bulk and surface Fermi-surfaces in the normal state.…
A recent experiment [Nadj-Perge et al., Science 346, 602 (2014)] provides evidence for Majorana zero modes in iron (Fe) chains on the superconducting Pb(110) surface. Here, we study this system by scanning tunneling microscopy using superconducting tips. This high-resolution technique resolves a rich subgap structure, including zero-energy excitations in some chains. We compare the symmetry properties of the data under voltage reversal against theoretical expectations and provide evidence that the putative Majorana signature overlaps with a previously unresolved low-energy resonance. Interpret…
Linear, suspended chains of magnetic atoms proximity coupled to an s-wave superconductor are predicted to host Majorana zero modes at the chain ends in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling. Specifically, iron (Fe) chains on Pb(110) have been explored as a possible system to exhibit topological superconductivity and host Majorana zero-modes [Nadj-Perge, et al., Science 346, 602 (2014)]. Here, we study chains of the transition metal cobalt (Co) on Pb(110) and check for topological signatures. Using spin-polarized scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we resolve ferromagnetic order in the $d$ ba…
Recent tunneling experiments on InSb hybrid superconductor-semiconductor devices have provided hope for a stabilization of Majorana edge modes in a spin-orbit quantum wire subject to a magnetic field and superconducting proximity effect. Connecting the experimental scenario with a microscopic description poses challenges of different kind, such as accounting for the effect of interactions on the tunneling properties of the wire. We develop a density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) analysis of the tunneling spectra of interacting Majorana chains, which we explicate for the Kitaev chain mode…
The anomalous proximity effect in dirty superconducting junctions is one of most striking phenomena highlighting the profound nature of Majorana bound states and odd-frequency Cooper pairs in topological superconductors. Motivated by the recent experimental realization of planar topological Josephson junctions, we describe the anomalous proximity effect in a superconductor/semiconductor hybrid, where an additional dirty normal-metal segment is extended from a topological Josephson junction. The topological phase transition in the topological Josephson junction is accompanied by a drastic chang…
The introduction of superconductivity to the Dirac surface states of a topological insulator leads to a topological superconductor, which may support topological quantum computing through Majorana zero modes. The development of a scalable material platform is key to the realization of topological quantum computing. Here we report on the growth and properties of high-quality (Bi,Sb)2Te3/graphene/gallium heterostructures. Our synthetic approach enables atomically sharp layers at both hetero-interfaces, which in turn promotes proximity-induced superconductivity that originates in the gallium film…
Recent experimental searches for signatures of Majorana-like excitations in proximitized semiconducting nanowires involve conductance spectroscopy, where the evidence sought after is a robust zero-bias peak (in longer wires) and its characteristic field-dependent splitting (in shorter wires). Although experimental results partially confirm the theoretical predictions, commonly observed discrepancies still include (i) a zero-bias peak that is significantly lower than the predicted value of $2e^2/h$ and (ii) the absence of the expected "Majorana oscillations" of the lowest-energy modes at higher…
Superconducting proximity pairing in helical edge modes, such as those of topological insulators (TI), is predicted to provide a unique platform for realizing Majorana zero modes (MZMs). We use scanning tunneling microscopy measurements to probe the influence of proximity induced superconductivity and magnetism on the helical hinge states of Bi(111) films, grown on a superconducting Nb substrate and decorated with magnetic Fe clusters. Consistent with model calculations, our measurements reveal the emergence of a localized MZM at the interface between the superconducting helical edge channel a…
We develop a theory for the proximity effect in superconductor-semiconductor-normal metal tunneling structures, which have recently been extensively studied experimentally, leading to the observation of transport signatures consistent with the predicted zero-energy Majorana bound states. We show that our model for the semiconductor nanowire having multiple occupied subbands with different transmission probabilities through the barrier reproduces the observed "soft-gap" behavior associated with substantial subgap tunneling conductance. We study the manifestations of the soft gap phenomenon both…
We consider theoretically an armchair Carbon nanotube (CNT) in the presence of an electric field and in contact with an s-wave superconductor. We show that the proximity effect opens up superconducting gaps in the CNT of different strengths for the exterior and interior branches of the two Dirac points. For strong proximity induced superconductivity the interior gap can be of the p-wave type, while the exterior gap can be tuned by the electric field to be of the s-wave type. Such a setup supports a single Majorana bound state at each end of the CNT. In the case of a weak proximity induced supe…
Majorana zero mode is an exotic quasi-particle excitation with non-Abelian statistics in topological superconductor systems, and can serve as the cornerstone for topological quantum computation, a new type of fault-tolerant quantum computation architecture. This review paper highlights recent progress in realizing Majorana modes in iron-based high-temperature superconductors. We begin with the discussion on topological aspect of electronic band structures in iron-based superconductor compounds. Then we focus on several concrete proposals for Majorana modes, including the Majorana zero modes in…
We introduce two-dimensional topological insulators in proximity to high-temperature cuprate or iron-based superconductors as high-temperature platforms of Majorana Kramers pairs of zero modes. The proximity-induced pairing at the helical edge state of the topological insulator serves as a Dirac mass, whose sign changes at the sample corner because of the pairing symmetry of high-$T_c$ superconductors. This sign changing naturally creates at each corner a pair of Majorana zero modes protected by time-reversal symmetry. Conceptually, this is a topologically trivial superconductor-based approach…
We study self-consistently a microscopic interface between a quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI) and a superconductor (SC), focusing on properties related to Majorana fermion creation. For an $s$-wave SC we show that odd-in-momentum, or $p$-wave, order parameters exist for all doping levels of the QSHI and that they can be related to different spinless Cooper pair amplitudes. Despite this, the induced superconducting gap in the QSHI always retains its $s$-wave character, validating the commonly used effective model for superconductivity in a topological insulator. For a $d_{xy}$-wave SC, we sho…
Second-order topological superconductors (SOTSs) host localized Majorana fermions and provide a new platform for topological quantum computation. We propose a remarkable and feasible way to realize networks based on SOTSs which allow to nucleate and braid Majorana bound states (MBSs) in an all-electrical manner without fine-tuning. The proposed setups are scalable in a straightforward way and can accommodate any even number of MBSs. Moreover, the MBSs in the networks allow defining qubits whose states can be initialized and read out by measuring Josephson currents flowing between SOTS islands.…
We develop a theory for strain control of Majorana zero energy modes and Josephson effect in black phosphorus (BP) devices proximity coupled to a superconductor. Employing realistic values for the band parameters subject to strain, we show that the strain closes the intrinsic band gap of BP, however the proximity effect from the superconductor reopens it and creates Dirac and Weyl nodes. Our results illustrate that Majorana zero energy flat bands connect the nodes within the band-inverted regime in which their associated density of states is localized at the edges of the device. In a ferromagn…
We propose a system of coupled quantum dots in proximity to a superconductor and driven by separate ac potentials to realize and detect Floquet Majorana fermions. We show that the appearance of Floquet Majorana fermions can be finely controlled in the expanded parameter space of the drive frequency, amplitude, and phase difference across the two dots. While these Majorana fermions are not topologically protected, the highly tunable setup provides a realistic system for observing the exotic physics associated with Majorana fermions as well as their dynamical generation and manipulation.
The external controllability of topological superconductors and Majorana fermions would be important both for fundamental and practical interests. Here we predict the electric-field control of Majorana fermions in two-dimensional topological superconductors utilizing a topological insulator thin film proximity coupled to a conventional $s$-wave superconductor. With ferromagnetic ordering, the tunable structure inversion asymmetry by vertical electric field could induce topological quantum phase transition and realize a chiral topological superconductor state. A zero-energy Majorana bound state…
We study numerically the formation of Majorana bound states in a finite-size quasi-one-dimensional square-lattice strip with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, in the presence of a proximity-induced superconducting pairing and a magnetic field perpendicular to the strip. We take into account both the Zeeman and orbital effects of the field. First, using the Majorana polarization, we demonstrate that such a system can host more than one pair of Majorana quasiparticles. We construct the corresponding topological phase diagram and we conclude that the topological regions are extended in the presence of …
One-dimensional systems proximity-coupled to a superconductor can be driven into a topological superconducting phase by an external magnetic field. Here, we investigate the effect of vortices created by the magnetic field in a type-II superconductor providing the proximity effect. We identify different ways in which the topological protection of Majorana modes can be compromised and discuss strategies to circumvent these detrimental effects. Our findings are also relevant to topological phases of proximitized quantum Hall edge states.
For strongly anisotropic time-reversal invariant (TRI) insulators in two and three dimensions, the band inversion can occur respectively at all TRI momenta of a high symmetry axis and plane. Although these classes of materials are topologically trivial as the strong and weak $Z_{2}$ indices are all trivial, they can host an even number of unprotected helical gapless edge states or surface Dirac cones on some boundaries. We show in this work that when the gapless boundary states are gapped by $s_{\pm}$-wave superconductivity, a boundary time-reversal invariant topological superconductor (BTRITS…
