Second-order topological superconductors (SOTSs) host localized Majorana fermions and provide a new platform for topological quantum computation. We propose a remarkable and feasible way to realize networks based on SOTSs which allow to nucleate and braid Majorana bound states (MBSs) in an all-electrical manner without fine-tuning. The proposed setups are scalable in a straightforward way and can accommodate any even number of MBSs. Moreover, the MBSs in the networks allow defining qubits whose states can be initialized and read out by measuring Josephson currents flowing between SOTS islands. Our proposal can be implemented in monolayers of $\text{FeTe}{}_{1-x}\text{Se}_{x}$, monolayers of 1T'-WTe$_2$, and inverted Hg(Cd)Te quantum wells in proximity to conventional superconductors.
The external controllability of topological superconductors and Majorana fermions would be important both for fundamental and practical interests. Here we predict the electric-field control of Majorana fermions in two-dimensional topological superconductors utilizing a topological insulator thin film proximity coupled to a conventional $s$-wave superconductor. With ferromagnetic ordering, the tunable structure inversion asymmetry by vertical electric field could induce topological quantum phase transition and realize a chiral topological superconductor state. A zero-energy Majorana bound state…
We show how a chiral Dirac fermion (a massless electron or hole) can be converted into a pair of neutral chiral Majorana fermions (a particle equal to its own antiparticle). These two types of fermions exist on the metallic surface of a topological insulator, respectively, at a magnetic domain wall and at a magnet-superconductor interface. Interferometry of Majorana fermions is a key operation in topological quantum computation, but the detection is problematic since these particles have no charge. The Dirac-Majorana converter enables electrical detection of the interferometric signal.
We investigate the realization of a topological superconductor in a generic bucked honeycomb system equipped with four types of mass-generating terms, where the superconductor gap is introduced by attaching the honeycomb system to an $s$-wave superconductor. Constructing the topological phase diagram, we show that Majorana modes are formed in the phase boundary. In particular, we analyze the honeycomb system with antiferromagnetic order in the presence of perpendicular electric field $E_{z}$. It becomes topological for $|E_{z}|>E_{z}^{\text{cr}}$ and trivial for $|E_{z}|<E_{z}^{\text{cr}}$, wi…
To realize the braiding operations of Majorana zero mode in the vortex cores of a topological superconductor (TSC), a novel approach is proposed in this letter to replace the common tip (or tip-like) method. Instead of on top of the TSC thin film, arrays of electrically controllable pining centers are built beneath the film, hence detecting can proceed along with braiding. It does not only increase the braiding rate, but also enables the braiding to be performed in an electrically controllable way and to be integrated into large scale. Our work paves the way towards large-scale topological qua…
Stochastic switching-current distribution in a graphene-based Josephson junction exhibits a crossover from the classical to quantum regime, revealing the macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) of a Josephson phase particle at low temperatures. Microwave spectroscopy measurements indicate a multi-photon absorption process occurring via discrete energy levels in washboard potential well. The crossover temperature for MQT and the quantized level spacing are controlled with the gate voltage, implying its potential application to gate-tunable superconducting quantum bits.
We propose a system of coupled quantum dots in proximity to a superconductor and driven by separate ac potentials to realize and detect Floquet Majorana fermions. We show that the appearance of Floquet Majorana fermions can be finely controlled in the expanded parameter space of the drive frequency, amplitude, and phase difference across the two dots. While these Majorana fermions are not topologically protected, the highly tunable setup provides a realistic system for observing the exotic physics associated with Majorana fermions as well as their dynamical generation and manipulation.
A monolayer of the high-$T_c$ superconductor FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ has been predicted to realize a topologically non-trivial state with helical edge modes at its boundary, providing a novel intrinsic system to search for topological superconductivity and Majorana zero modes. Evidence in favor of a topological phase transition and helical edge modes has been identified in recent experiments \cite{Peng2019}. We propose to create Majorana zero modes by applying an in-plane magnetic field to the FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ monolayer and by tuning the local chemical potential via electric gating. Owing to the …
The iron-based superconductors (FeSCs) have recently emerged as a promising single-material Majorana platform by hosting isolated Majorana zero modes (MZMs) at relatively high temperatures. To further verify its Majorana nature and move forward to build topological quantum qubit, it is highly desirable to achieve tunability for MZMs on homogeneous FeSCs. Here, with an in-situ strain device, we can controllably create MZMs on the homogeneous surface of stoichiometric superconductor LiFeAs by inducing a topological phase transition. The evolution of discrete energy modes inside a strained vortex…
We investigate the physical mechanisms for achieving an electrical control of conventional spin-singlet superconductivity in thin films by focusing on the role of surface orbital polarization. Assuming a multi-orbital description of the metallic state, due to screening effects the electric field acts by modifying the strength of the surface potential and, in turn, yields non-trivial orbital-Rashba couplings. The resulting orbital polarization at the surface and in its close proximity is shown to have a dramatic impact on superconductivity. We demonstrate that, by varying the strength of the el…
The capability to switch electrically between superconducting and insulating states of matter represents a novel paradigm in the state-of-the-art engineering of correlated electronic systems. An exciting possibility is to turn on superconductivity in a topologically non-trivial insulator, which provides a route to search for non-Abelian topological states. However, existing demonstrations of superconductor-insulator switches have involved only topologically trivial systems, and even those are rare due to the stringent requirement to tune the carrier density over a wide range. Here we report re…
We analyze the reading and initialization of a topological qubit encoded by Majorana fermions in one-dimensional semiconducting nanowires, weakly coupled to a single level quantum dot (QD). It is shown that when the Majorana fermions are fused by tuning gate voltage, the topological qubit can be read out directly through the occupation of the QD in an energy window. The initialization of the qubit can also be realized via adjusting the gate voltage on the QD, with the total fermion parity conserved. As a result, both reading and initialization processes can be achieved in an all-electrical way…
We present a new nanoscale superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) whose interference pattern can be shifted electrically in-situ. The device consists of a nanoscale four-terminal/four-junction SQUID fabricated at the apex of a sharp pipette using a self-aligned three-step deposition of Pb. In contrast to conventional two-terminal/two-junction SQUIDs that display optimal sensitivity when flux biased to about a quarter of the flux quantum, the additional terminals and junctions allow optimal sensitivity at arbitrary applied flux, thus eliminating the magnetic field "blind spots". We…
We theoretically study the effect of orbital-dependent exchange field in the formation of second order topological superconductors. We demonstrate that changing the orbital difference can induce topological transition and the Majorana corner modes therein can be manipulated. We further propose to detect the corner modes via a normal probe terminal. The conductance quantization is found to be robust to changes of the relevant system parameters.
The recent realization of pristine Majorana zero modes (MZMs) in vortices of iron-based superconductors (FeSCs) provides a promising platform for long-sought-after fault-tolerant quantum computation. A large topological gap between the MZMs and the lowest excitations enabled detailed characterization of vortex MZMs in those materials. Despite those achievements, a practical implementation of topological quantum computation based on MZM braiding remains elusive in this new Majorana platform. Among the most pressing issues are the lack of controllable tuning methods for vortex MZMs and inhomogen…
We investigate hybrid structures based on a bilayer quantum spin Hall system in proximity to an s-wave superconductor as a platform to mimic time-reversal symmetric topological superconductors. In this bilayer setup, the induced pairing can be of intra- or inter-layer type, and domain walls of those different types of pairing potentials host Kramers partners (time-reversal conjugate pairs) of Majorana bound states. Interestingly, we discover that such topological interfaces providing Majorana bound states can also be achieved in an otherwise homogeneous system by a spatially dependent inter-la…
Confinement at the helical edge of a topological insulator is possible in the presence of proximity-induced magnetic (F) or superconducting (S) order. The interplay of both phenomena leads to the formation of localized Majorana bound states (MBS) or likewise (under certain resonance conditions) the formation of ordinary Andreev bound states (ABS). We investigate the properties of bound states in junctions composed of alternating regions of F or S barriers. Interestingly, the direction of magnetization in F regions and the relative superconducting phase between S regions can be exploited to hyb…
Majorana corner modes appearing in two-dimensional second-order topological superconductors have great potential applications for fault-tolerant topological quantum computations. We demonstrate that in the presence of an in-plane magentic field two-dimensional ($s+p$)-wave superconductors host Majorana corner modes, whose location can be manipulated by the direction of the magnetic field. In addition, we discuss the effects of edge imperfections on the Majorana corner modes. We describe how different edge shapes and edge disorder affect the number and controllability of the Majorana corner mod…
We report the observation for the p$_{z}$ electron band and the band inversion in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{x}$Se$_{1-x}$ with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Furthermore, we found that excess Fe (y>0) inhibits the topological band inversion in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{x}$Se$_{1-x}$, which explains the absence of Majorana zero modes in previous reports for Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{x}$Se$_{1-x}$ with excess Fe. Based on our analysis of different amounts of Te doping and excess Fe, we propose a delicate topological phase in this material. Thanks to this delicate phase, one may be able to tune the topological transi…
Majorana zero modes (MZMs) obey non-Abelian statistics and are considered building blocks for constructing topological qubits. Iron-based superconductors with topological band structures have emerged as promising hosting materials, since isolated candidate MZMs in the quantum limit have been observed inside the topological vortex cores. However, these materials suffer from issues related to alloying-induced disorder, uncontrolled vortex lattices and a low yield of topological vortices. Here, we report the formation of an ordered and tunable MZM lattice in naturally-strained stoichiometric LiFe…
Spin-valve structures in which a change of magnetic configuration is responsible for magnetoresistance have enabled impressive advances in spintronics, focusing on magnetically storing and sensing information. However, this mature technology also offers versatile control of the underlying fringing fields and entirely different applications by realizing topologically-nontrivial states. Together with proximity-induced superconductivity in a two-dimensional electron gas, these fringing fields realized in commercially-available spin valves could control Majorana bound states (MBS). Detailed suppor…
The list of quantum mechanical systems with non-Abelian statistics has recently been expanded by including generic spin-orbit-coupled semiconductors e.g., InAs) in proximity to a s-wave superconductor. Demonstration of the anyonic statistics using Majorana fermion interferometry in this system is a necessary first step towards topological quantum computation (TQC). However, since all isolated chiral edges that can be created in the semiconductor are charge neutral, it is not clear if electrically controlled interferometry is possible in this system. Here we show that when two isolated chiral M…
