To each variety $X$ and a nonnegative integer $m$, there is a space $X_m$ over $X$, called the jet scheme of $X$ of order $m$, parametrizing $m$-th jets on $X$. Its fiber over a singular point of $X$ is called a singular fiber. For a surface with a rational double point, Mourtada gave a one-to-one correspondence between the irreducible components of the singular fiber of $X_m$ and the exceptional curves of the minimal resolution of $X$ for $m \gg 0$.
In this paper, for a surface $X$ over complex number with a singularity of $A_n$ or $D_4$-type, we study the intersections of irreducible components of the singular fiber and construct a graph using this information. The vertices of the graph correspond to irreducible components of the singular fiber and two vertices are connected when the intersection of the corresponding components is maximal for the inclusion relation. In the case of $A_n$ or $D_4$-type singularity, we show that this graph is isomorphic to the resolution graph for $m \gg 0$.
We describe a method to construct completions of affine spaces into total spaces of $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial terminal Mori fiber spaces over the projective line. As an application we provide families of examples with non-rational, birationally rigid and non-stably rational general fibers.
We identify a set of initial rational contractions of fiber type on $\overline{M}_{0,6}$. Our proof uses a new algorithm we develop for verifying descriptions of the cone of effective divisors on varieties without elementary rational contractions of fiber type. On Mori dream spaces, our algorithm identifies faces of the cone of nef curves associated to initial rational contractions of fiber type.
We show that a smooth projective complex manifold of dimension greater than two endowed with an elliptic fiber space structure and with finite fundamental group always contains a rational curve, provided its canonical bundle is relatively trivial. As an application of this result, we prove that any Calabi-Yau manifold that admits a fibration onto a curve whose general fibers are abelian varieties always contains a rational curve.
We consider threefold del Pezzo fibrations over a curve germ whose central fiber is non-rational. Under the additional assumption that the singularities of the total space are at worst ordinary double points, we apply a suitable base change and show that there is a 1-to-1 correpspondence between such fibrations and certain non-singular del Pezzo fibrations equipped with a cyclic group action.
This paper has been withdrawn. A completely rewritten new version will be soon submitted. In order to obtain the inequality $6(g-1) \le K_f^2$ some additional conditions must be imposed on the fibration, involving the number on certain exceptional curves.
In a family of curves, the Chern numbers of a singular fiber are the local contributions to the Chern numbers of the total space. We will give some inequalities between the Chern numbers of a singular fiber as well as their lower and upper bounds. We introduce the dual fiber of a singular fiber, and prove a duality theorem. As an application, we will classify singular fibers with large or small Chern numbers.
We describe two ways to construct finite rational morphisms between fiber products of rational elliptic surfaces with section and some Calabi--Yau manifolds. We use them to construct correspondences between such fiber products that admit at most five singular fibers and rigid Calabi--Yau threefolds.
In part I of this paper we constructed certain fibered Calabi-Yaus by a quotient construction in the context of weighted hypersurfaces. In this paper look at the case of K3 fibrations more closely and study the singular fibers which occur. This differs from previous work since the fibrations we discuss have constant modulus, and the singular fibers have torsion monodromy.
We prove that in a family of projective threefolds defined over an algebraically closed field, the locus of rational fibers is a countable union of closed subsets of the locus of separably rationally connected fibers. When the ground field has characteristic zero, this implies that the locus of rational fibers in a smooth family of projective threefolds is the union of at most countably many closed subfamilies.
We analyze and completely describe the four cases when the Hitchin fibration on a $2$-dimensional moduli space of irregular Higgs bundles over $\mathbb{C}P^{1}$ has a single singular fiber. The case when the fiber at infinity is of type $I_0^*$ is further analyzed, and we give constructions of all the possible configurations of singular curves inelliptic fibrations having this type of singular fiber at infinity.
We explain an algorithm to calculate Arthur's weighted orbital integral in terms of the number of rational points on the fundamental domain of the associated affine Springer fiber. The strategy is to count the number of rational points of the truncated affine Springer fibers in two ways: by the Arthur-Kottwitz reduction and by the Harder-Narasimhan reduction. A comparison of results obtained from these two approaches gives us recurrence relations between the number of rational points on the fundamental domains of the affine Springer fibers and Arthur's weighted orbital integrals. As an example…
This paper is to give some concrete examples of the general fibers of the evaluation map of some Kontsevich mapping spaces parametrize low degree rational curves on low degree complete intersection varieties. We prove these examples are Fano or Calabi-Yau vareities of low dimension, e.g, surface and threefold. In usual, the "moduli" fibers are constructed in an abstract way, but here we give a down-to-earth interpretation to some of these fibers from the perspective of projective geometry.
We prove the existence of a family $\mathcal{X}\rightarrow B$ of smooth projective fourfolds, such that the very general fiber $\mathcal{X}_t$ is not stably rational (a fortiori not rational), but some special fibers $\mathcal{X}_t$ are rational (a fortiori stably rational).
We contribute a new algebraic method for computing the orthogonal projections of a point onto a rational algebraic surface embedded in the three dimensional projective space. This problem is first turned into the computation of the finite fibers of a generically finite dominant rational map: a congruence of normal lines to the rational surface. Then, an in-depth study of certain syzygy modules associated to such a congruence is presented and applied to build elimination matrices that provide universal representations of its finite fibers, under some genericity assumptions. These matrices depen…
We constructed the analytic Milnor fiber is a non-archimedean model of the classical topological Milnor fibration. In the present paper, we describe the homotopy type of the analytic Milnor fiber in terms of a strictly semi-stable model, and we show that its singular cohomology coincides with the weight zero part of the mixed Hodge structure on the nearby cohomology. We give a similar expression for Denef and Loeser's motivic Milnor fiber in terms of a strictly semi-stable model.
Let $f:\,X \to \mathbb{P}^1$ be a non-isotrivial semi-stable family of varieties of dimension $m$ over $\mathbb{P}^1$ with $s$ singular fibers. Assume that the smooth fibers $F$ are minimal, i.e., their canonical line bundles are semiample. Then $κ(X)\leq κ(F)+1$. If $κ(X)=κ(F)+1$, then $s>\frac{4}m+2$. If $κ(X)\geq 0$, then $s\geq\frac{4}m+2$. In particular, if $m=1$, $s=6$ and $κ(X)=0$, then the family $f$ is Teichmüller.
Let $X$ be a rational elliptic surface with elliptic fibration $π:X\to\Bbb{P}^1$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of any characteristic. Given a conic bundle $φ:X\to\Bbb{P}^1$ we use numerical arguments to classify all possible fibers of $φ$ and study the interplay between singular fibers of $π$ and $φ$.
We construct a concrete example of a 1-parameter family of smooth projective geometrically integral varieties over an open subscheme of P^1_Q such that there is exactly one rational fiber with no rational points. This makes explicit a construction of Poonen.
We study the birational geometry of a Fano 4-fold X from the point of view of Mori dream spaces; more precisely, we study rational contractions of X. Here a rational contraction is a rational map f: X-->Y, where Y is normal and projective, which factors as a finite sequence of flips, followed by a surjective morphism with connected fibers. Such f is called elementary if the difference of the Picard numbers of X and Y is 1. We first give a characterization of non-movable prime divisors in X, when X has Picard number at least 6; this is related to the study of birational and divisorial elementar…
We consider a rational map $ϕ: \mathbb{P}_k^{m} \dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}_k^n$ that is a parameterization of an $m$-dimensional variety. Our main goal is to study the $(m-1)$-dimensional fibers of $ϕ$ in relation to the $m$-th local cohomology modules of the Rees algebra of its base ideal.
A rational map $ϕ: \mathbb{P}_k^m \dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}_k^n$ is defined by homogeneous polynomials of a common degree $d$. We establish a linear bound in terms of $d$ for the number of $(m-1)$-dimensional fibers of $ϕ$, by using ideals of minors of the Jacobian matrix. In particular, we answer affirmatively Question~11 in arXiv:1511.02933v2.
In this short paper, we show that the fiber cones of rational normal scrolls are Cohen-Macaulay. As an application, we compute their Castelnuovo-Mumford regularities and $\mathbf{a}$-invariants, as well as the reduction number of the defining ideals of the rational normal scrolls. We also characterize the Gorensteinness of the fiber cone.
This paper deals with a study of the rational elliptic surfaces whose $J$-invariant functions are of degree one. Almost all of these elliptic surfaces have four singular fibers, while the remaining surfaces have only three singular fibers. The moduli space of these elliptic surfaces is canonically isomorphic to the projective line by taking the $J$-values for a certain fixed type of singular fibers. Over the moduli space, we discuss our elliptic surfaces, and investigate how their sections are described by the parameter of the moduli space. By using a covering space of the moduli, we construct…
Let $f:X \to \mathbb{P}^1$ be a non-isotrivial family of semi-stable curves of genus $g\geq 1$ defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ with $s_{nc}$ singular fibers whose Jacobians are non-compact. We prove that $s_{nc}\geq 5$ if $k=\mathbb C$ and $g\geq 5$; we also prove that $s_{nc}\geq 4$ if ${\rm char}~k>0$ and the relative Jacobian of $f$ is non-smooth.
We propose a new sheaf-theoretical method for the calculation of the monodromy zeta functions of Milnor fibrations. As an application, classical formulas of Kushnirenko and Varchenko etc. concerning polynomials on $\CC^n$ will be generalized to polynomial functions on any toric variety.
We study invariant divisors on the total spaces of the homogeneous deformations of rational complexity-one T-varieties constructed by Ilten and Vollmert. In particular, we identify a natural subgroup of the Picard group for any general fiber of such a deformation, which is canonically isomorphic to the Picard group of the special fiber. This isomorphism preserves Euler characteristic, intersection numbers, and the canonical class.
In this new version, we add the proof of the main theorem when the central fiber is not necessarily simple normal crossing. We also correct some typos.
Let ${\mathcal B}_u$ be the Springer fiber over a nilpotent endomorphism $u\in End(\mathbb{C}^n)$. Let $J(u)$ be the Jordan form of $u$ regarded as a partition of $n$. The irreducible components of ${\mathcal B}_u$ are all of the same dimension. They are labelled by Young tableaux of shape $J(u)$. We study the question of singularity of the components of ${\mathcal B}_u$ and show that all the components of ${\mathcal B}_u$ are nonsingular if and only if $J(u)\in\{(λ,1,1,...), (λ_1,λ_2), (λ_1,λ_2,1), (2,2,2)\}$.
An integrable system is a dynamic system characterized by the existence of constants of motion and the existence of algebraic invariants, having an origin in algebraic geometry. In the 1970s, Mumford introduced a new completely integrable system defined on a smooth hyperelliptic curve. In the 2000s, Vanhaecke completed the description of the Munford integrable system by defining a Poisson structure on the phase space of the Mumford system. In this article we will study the singular Mumford system. The starting point is to determine when and why the Mumford system is singular. For this we will …
By the famous ADE classification rational double points are simple. Rational triple points are also simple. We conjecture that the simple normal surface singularities are exactly those rational singularities, whose resolution graph can be obtained from the graph of a rational double point or rational triple point by making (some) vertex weights more negative. For rational singularities we show one direction in general, and the other direction (simpleness) within the special classes of rational quadruple points and of sandwiched singularities.
A general strategy is given for the classification of graphs of rational surface singularities. For each maximal rational double point configuration we investigate the possible multiplicities in the fundamental cycle. We classify completely certain types of graphs. This allows to extend the classification of rational singularities to multiplicity 8. We also discuss the complexity of rational resolution graphs.
In this paper we describe the fundamental group-scheme of a proper variety fibered over an abelian variety with rationally connected fibers over an algebraically closed field. We use old and recent results for the Nori fundamental group-scheme, and of finite group-schemes in general to prove that the kernel of such a fibration is finite, and that the homotopy exact sequence holds in this case. As an application, we describe the fundamental group-schemes of certain proper varieties that are connected by curves or are related to them.
Polarized rational surfaces $(X, \mathcal L)$ of sectional genus two ruled in conics are studied. When they are not minimal, they are described as the blow-up of $\mathbb F_1$ at some points lying on distinct fibers. Ampleness and very ampleness of $\mathcal L$ are studied in terms of their location. When $\mathcal L$ is very ample and there is a line contained in $X$ and transverse to the fibers, the conic fibrations $(X, \mathcal L)$ are classified and a related property concerned with the inflectional locus is discussed.
We prove a conjecture of V. V. Shokurov which in particular implies that the fibers of a resolution of a variety with divisorial log terminal singularities are rationally chain connected.
Using the structure of the jet schemes of rational double point singularities, we construct "minimal embedded toric resolutions" of these singularities. We also establish, for these singularities, a correspondence between a natural class of irreducible components of the jet schemes centered at the singular locus and the set of divisors which appear on every "minimal embedded toric resolution". We prove that this correspondence is bijective except for the $E_8$ singulartiy. This can be thought as an embedded Nash correspondence for rational double point singularities.
Determining the number of singular fibers in a family of varieties over a curve is a generalization of Shafarevich's Conjecture and has implications for the types of subvarieties that can appear in the corresponding moduli stack. We consider families of log canonically polarized varieties over $¶^1$, i.e. families $g:(Y,D)\to ¶^1$ where $D$ is an effective snc divisor and the sheaf $ω_{Y/¶^1}(D)$ is $g$-ample. After first defining what it means for fibers of such a family to be singular, we show that with the addition of certain mild hypotheses (the fibers have finite automorphism group, $\sO_…
Let $f:X@>>>\Bbb P^1$ be a fibered surface with fibers of genus g>1. If f is semistable and non isotrivial we prove that X of non negative Kodaira dimension implies that the number s of singular fibers is at least 5. Information about the nature of X if s=6,5 and g<6 is given. If f is any relatively minimal fibration we bound by below K_f^2, the bound depending on g and the Kodaira dimension of X, a classification of rational surfaces with minimal K_f^2 is given. Moreover, we prove several properties of positivity for the linear system K_X+F (F a fibre of f). Examples of a K3 surfaces admittin…
We give a construction of singular curves with many rational points over finite fields. This construction enables us to prove some results on the maximum number of rational points on an absolutely irreducible projective algebraic curve defined over Fq of geometric genus g and arithmetic genus $π$.
We classify all complex surfaces with quotient singularities that do not contain any smooth rational curves, under the assumption that the canonical divisor of the surface is not pseudo-effective. As a corollary we show that if $X$ is a log del Pezzo surface such that for every closed point $p\in X$, there is a smooth curve (locally analytically) passing through $p$, then $X$ contains at least one smooth rational curve.
We prove that the set of singular configurations of a general Gough Stewart platform has a rational parametrization. We introduce a reciprocal twist mapping which, for a general orientation of the platform, realizes the cubic surface of singularities as the blowing up of a quadric surface in five points.
In this paper, we shall prove Beauville's conjecture: if $f:S \to P^1$ is a non-trivial semistable fibration of genus g>1, then $f$ admits at least 5 singular fibers. We have also constructed an example of genus 2 with 5 singular fibers. This paper will appear in the Journal of Algebraic Geometry.
The work is a detailed study of rational singularities of multiplicity 3 (RTP-singularities, for short). We give a list of nonisolated hypersurface singularities of which normalisations are the RTP-singularities, and construct their minimal resolution graphs by means of a subdivision of Newton polygons of those -- a method introduced by M. Oka for isolated complete intersection singularities. We show that nonisolated forms of RTP-singularities and their normalisations are both Newton non-degenerate.
We consider the question whether one can construct an embedded resolution of singularities of a singular variety $X\subset \textbf{A}^n$ from the data of the irreducible components of the spaces of jets (of $X$) centered at the singular locus of $X.$ We show that the answer is no in general and that it is yes for some birational models of rational triple surface singularities.
