At one loop, quantum kinks are described by a sum of quantum harmonic oscillator Hamiltonians, and the ground state is just the product of the oscillator ground states. Two-loop kink masses are only known in integrable and supersymmetric cases and two-loop states have never been found. We find the two-loop kink mass and explicitly construct the two-loop kink ground state in a scalar field theory with an arbitrary nonderivative potential. We use a coherent state operator which maps the vacuum sector to the kink sector, allowing all states to be treated with a single Hamiltonian which needs to be renormalized only once, eliminating the need for regulator matching conditions. Our calculation is greatly simplified by a recently introduced alternative to collective coordinates, in which the kink momentum is fixed perturbatively.
At one loop, quantum kinks are described by a free theory. The nonlinearity and so the interesting phenomenology arrives at two loops, where, for example, internal excitations couple to continuum excitations. We calculate the two-loop mass of a scalar kink. Unlike previous calculations, we include a counterterm which cancels the vacuum energy density at this order, so that our result for the kink mass is finite even when the vacuum energy density is nonzero. This allows us to apply our result to the $ϕ^4$ kink, for which we obtain a two-loop mass contribution of $0.0126λ/m$ in terms of the cou…
We present a method to calculate the One-loop mass correction to Kinks mass in a (1+1)-dimensional field theoretical model in which the fluctuation potential $V^{\prime\prime}(ϕ_c)$ has shape invariance property. We use the generalized zeta function regularization method to implement our setup for describing quantum kink states.
Motivated by their effect on the gravitational wave signal emitted by cosmic strings, we study the dynamics of kinks on strings of different tensions meeting at junctions. The propagation of a kink through a Y-junction leads to the formation of three `daughter' kinks. Assuming a uniform distribution of the incoming wave vectors at the junction, we find there is a significant region of configuration space in which the sharpness of at least one of the daughter kinks is enhanced relative to the sharpness of the initial kink. For closed loops with junctions we show this leads to an exponential gro…
In this paper we examine the scattering processes among the members of a rich family of kinks which arise in a (1+1)-dimensional relativistic two scalar field theory. These kinks carry two different topological charges that determine the mutual interactions between the basic energy lumps (extended particles) described by these topological defects. Processes like topological charge exchange, kink-antikink bound state formation or kink repulsion emerge depending on the charges of the scattered particles. Two-bounce resonant windows have been found in the antikink-kink scattering processes, but n…
Oscillons are time-dependent, localized in space, extremely long-lived states in nonlinear scalar-field models, while kinks are topological solitons in one spatial dimension. In the present work, we show new classes of oscillons and oscillating kinks in a system of two nonlinearly coupled scalar fields in $1 + 1$ spatiotemporal dimensions. The solutions contain a control parameter, the variation of which produces oscillons and kinks with a flat-top shape. The model finds applications to condensed matter, cosmology, and high-energy physics.
One-loop corrections to kink masses in a family of (1+1)-dimensional field theoretical models with two real scalar fields are computed. A generalized DHN formula applicable to potentials with and without reflection is obtained. It is shown how half-bound states arising in the spectrum of the second order fluctuation operator for one-component topological kinks and the vacuum play a central r$\hat{\rm o}$le in the computation of the kink Casimir energy. The issue of whether or not the kink degeneracy exhibited by this family of models at the classical level survives one-loop quantum fluctuation…
In this paper we describe the moduli space of kinks in a class of systems of two coupled real scalar fields in (1+1) Minkowskian space-time. The main feature of the class is the spontaneous breaking of a discrete symmetry of (real) Ginzburg-Landau type that guarantees the existence of kink topological defects.
In this work we offer an approach to enlarge the number of exactly solvable models with two real scalar fields in (1+1)D. We build some new two-field models, and obtain their exact orbits and exact or numerical field configurations. It is noteworthy that a model presenting triple-kinks and double-flat-top lumps is among those new models.
We consider topological defects for the $λϕ^4$ theory in (1+1) dimensions with a Lorentz-violating background. It has been shown, by M. Barreto et al. (2006) \cite{barreto2006defect}, one cannot have original effects in (the leading order of) single scalar field model. Here, we introduce a new Lorentz-violating term, next to leading order which cannot be absorbed by any redefinition of the scalar field or coordinates. Our term is the lowest order term which leads to concrete effects on the kink properties. We calculate the corrections to the kink shape and the corresponding mass. Quantization …
At one loop, quantum kinks are described by a sum of quantum harmonic oscillator Hamiltonians, and so their spectra are known exactly. We find the first correction beyond one loop to the quantum states corresponding to kinks with an excited bound or unbound normal mode, and also the corresponding two-loop correction to the energy cost of exciting the normal mode. In the case of unbound normal modes, this correction is equal to sum of the corresponding nonrelativistic kinetic energy plus the usual one-loop correction to the mass of the corresponding plane wave in the absence of a kink. We also …
The two-loop correction to the mass of the $ϕ^4$ kink is $0.0126λ/m$ in terms of the coupling $λ$ and the meson mass $m$ evaluated at the minimum of the potential. This is calculated using a recently proposed alternative to collective coordinates. Both the kink energy and the vacuum energy are IR divergent at this order. To cancel the divergence, the two energy densities are subtracted before integrating over space, or equivalently a finite counterterm is added to the Hamiltonian density to cancel the vacuum energy density. All spatial integrals are performed analytically. However in the last …
We consider topological solitons in the CP^n sigma models in two space dimensions. In particular, we study "kinks", which are independent of one coordinate up to a rotation of the target space, and "chains", which are periodic in one coordinate up to a rotation of the target space. Kinks and chains both exhibit constituents, similar to monopoles and calorons in SU(n) Yang-Mills-Higgs and Yang-Mills theories. We examine the constituent structure using Lie algebras.
A formula is derived that allows us to compute one-loop mass shifts for kinks and self-dual Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen vortices. The procedure is based in canonical quantization and heat kernel/zeta function regularization methods.
In this work we study the presence of kinks in models described by two real scalar fields in bi-dimensional space-time. We generate new two-field models, constructed from distinct but important one-field models, and we solve them with techniques that we introduce in the current work. We illustrate the results with several examples of current interest to high energy physics.
We study static kink configurations in a type of two-dimensional higher derivative scalar field theory whose Lagrangian contains second-order derivative terms of the field. The linear fluctuation around arbitrary static kink solutions is analyzed. We find that, the linear spectrum can be described by a supersymmetric quantum mechanics problem, and the criteria for stable static solutions can be given analytically. We also construct a superpotential formalism for finding analytical static kink solutions. Using this formalism we first reproduce some existed solutions and then offer a new solutio…
A Rayleigh-Schrodinger type of perturbation scheme is employed to study weak self-interacting scalar potential perturbations occurring in scalar field models describing 1D domain kinks and 3D domain walls. The solutions for the unperturbed defects are modified by the perturbing potentials. An illustration is provided by adding a cubic potential to the familiar quartic kink potential and solving for the first order correction to the kink solution, using a "slab approximation". A result is the appearance of an asymmetric scalar potential with different, nondegenerate, vacuum values and the subse…
We study a scalar field model in a two dimensional space-time with a generalized $ϕ^4_G$ potential which has four minima, obtaining novel kink solutions with well defined properties although the potential is non-analytical at the origin. The model contains a control parameter $δ$ that breaks the degeneracy of the potential minima, giving rise to two different phases for the system. The $δ<0$ phases do not possess solitary wave solutions. At the transition point $δ=0$ all the potential minima are degenerate and three different kink solutions result. As the transition to the $δ>0$ phase takes pl…
In this paper kink scattering processes are investigated in the Montonen-Sarker-Trullinger-Bishop model. The MSTB model is in fact a one-parametric family of relativistic scalar field theories living in a one-time one-space Minkowski space-time which encompasses two coupled scalar fields. Between the static solutions of the model two kinds of topological kinks are distinguished in a precise range of the family parameter. In that regime there exists one unstable kink exhibiting only one non-null component of the scalar field. Another type of topological kink solutions, stable in this case, incl…
In this paper, we analyze kink-like analytical solutions in a real scalar theory with an arcsin dynamics inspired by the arcsin electrodynamics presented in Kruglov (2015). This analysis is done by means of the first-order formalism. This formalism provides a framework where the equations of motion can be simplified by preserving the linear stability of the theory. In this work, the deformation procedure is implemented with the aim of finding exact solutions in systems with generalized dynamics. Along with the paper, we explore how the first-order formalism is implemented in the arcsin kinetic…
In this paper we develop a procedure to compute the one-loop quantum correction to the kink masses in generic (1+1)-dimensional one-component scalar field theoretical models. The procedure uses the generalized zeta function regularization method helped by the Gilkey-de Witt asymptotic expansion of the heat function via Mellin's transform. We find a formula for the one-loop kink mass shift that depends only on the part of the energy density with no field derivatives, evaluated by means of a symbolic software algorithm that automates the computation. The improved algorithm with respect to earlie…
Scalar kinks propagating along the bulk in warped spacetimes provide a thick brane realisation of the braneworld. We consider here, a class of such exact solutions of the full Einstein-scalar system with a sine-Gordon potential and a negative cosmological constant. In the background of the kink and the corresponding warped geometry, we discuss the issue of localisation of spin half fermions (with emphasis on massive ones) on the brane in the presence of different types of kink-fermion Yukawa couplings. We analyse the possibility of quasi-bound states for large values of the Yukawa coupling par…
We study the deconstructed scalar theory having nonlinear interactions and being renormalizable. It is shown that the kink-like configurations exist in such models. The possible forms of Yukawa coupling are considered. We find the degeneracy in mass spectrum of fermions coupled to the nontrivial scalar configuration.
The fluctuations of 5D self-gravitating non-abelian kinks which arise from the breaking of the SU(5) X Z2 symmetric theory are analyzed within the context of brane-worlds. While tensor and vector sectors of these fluctuations behave like its counterparts in the standard abelian Z2 kinks, the mixing between the field excitations of the non-abelian kink and the scalar components of the metric makes the pure scalar sector of the theory very interesting. The spectrum of these scalar fluctuations, which includes gravitationally trapped massless modes on the core of the wall associated to the broken…
In this work, we study kink collisions in a scalar field model with scalar-kinetic coupling. This model supports kink/antikink solutions with inner structure in the energy density. The collision of two such kinks is simulated by using the Fourier spectral method. We numerically calculate how the critical velocity and the widths of the first three two bounce windows vary with the model parameters. After that, we report some interesting collision results including two-bion escape final states, kink-bion-antikink intermediate states and kink or antikink intertwined final states. These results sho…
Recently, Jarah has constructed the kink form factor relevant to the scattering of an ultrarelativistic meson with an arbitrary nonrelativistic scalar kink. However the formula was only applied to the Sine-Gordon model, where the form factor was long ago determined by Weisz using integrability. In this paper, using various known analytic results for the (1+1)-dimensional real scalar $Φ^4$ model and a kink wave packet construction, we analytically calculate the leading quantum correction to the form factor of the $Φ^4$ kink. We discuss its properties in general and also in the ultra-relativisti…
In this paper we study the possibility of constructing two-field models from one-field models. The idea is to start with a given one-field model and use the deformation procedure to generate another one-field model, and then couple the two one-field models nontrivially, to get to a two-field model, together with some explicit topological solutions. We show with several distinct examples that the procedure works nicely and can be used generically.
We investigate the effect of a large number of kinks on the gravitational power radiated by cosmic string loops. We show that the total power radiated by a loop with N left-moving and right-moving kinks is proportional to N and increases with the typical kink angle. We then apply these results to loops containing junctions which give rise to a proliferation of the number of sharp kinks. We show that the time of gravitational decay of these loops is smaller than previously assumed. In light of this we revisit the gravitational wave burst predictions from a network containing such loops. We find…
We investigate several models described by real scalar fields, searching for topological defects, and investigating their linear stability. We also find bosonic zero modes and examine the thermal corrections at the one-loop level. The classical investigations are of interest to high energy physics and applications in condensed matter, in particular to spatially extended systems where fronts and interfaces separating different phase states may appear. The thermal investigations show that the finite temperature corrections that appear in a specific model induce a second-order phase transition in…
Coleman tunneling in a general scalar potential with two non-degenerate minima is known to have an approximation in terms of a piecewise linear triangular-shaped potential with sharp 'kinks' at the place of the local minima. This approximate potential has a regime where the existence of the bounce solution needs the scalar field to 'wait' for some amount of Euclidean time at one of the 'kinks'. We discuss under which conditions a kink approximation of locally smooth 'cap' regions provides a good estimate for the bounce action.
In this paper the scattering between the non-topological kinks arising in a family of two-component scalar field theory models is analyzed. A winding charge is carried by these defects. As a consequence, two different classes of kink scattering processes emerge: (1) collisions between kinks that carry the same winding number and (2) scattering events between kinks with opposite winding number. The variety of scattering channels is very rich and it strongly depends on the collision velocity and the model parameter. For the first type of events, four distinct scattering channels are found: \text…
A non-abelian kink inducing asymptotically the breaking pattern $SU(5)\times Z_2\rightarrow SU(4)\times U(1)/Z_4$ is obtained. We consider a fourth order Higgs potential in a $1+1$ theory where the scalar field is in the adjoint representation of $SU(5)$. The perturbative stability of the kink is also evaluated. A Schrödinger-like equation for the excitations along each $SU(5)$ generator is determined, and in none of the cases negative eigenvalues compromising the stability of solution are found. In particular, several bounded scalar states are found, being one of them the translational zero m…
We consider domain walls obtained by embedding the 1+1-dimensional $ϕ^4$-kink in higher dimensions. We show that a suitably adapted dimensional regularization method avoids the intricacies found in other regularization schemes in both supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric theories. This method allows us to calculate the one-loop quantum mass of kinks and surface tensions of kink domain walls in a very simple manner, yielding a compact d-dimensional formula which reproduces many of the previous results in the literature. Among the new results is the nontrivial one-loop correction to the surface…
In a two-dimensional toy model, motivated from five-dimensional heterotic M-theory, we study the collision of scalar field kinks with boundaries. By numerical simulation of the full two-dimensional theory, we find that the kink is always inelastically reflected with a model-independent fraction of its kinetic energy converted into radiation. We show that the reflection can be analytically understood as a fluctuation around the scalar field vacuum. This picture suggests the possibility of spontaneous emission of kinks from the boundary due to small perturbations in the bulk. We verify this pict…
We quantize scalar fluctuations in 1+1 dimensions above a classical background kink. The properties of the effective action for the corresponding classical field are studied with an exact functional method, alternative to exact Wilsonian renormalization, where the running parameter is a bare mass, and the regulator of the quantum theory is fixed. We extend this approach, in an appendix, to a Yukawa interaction in higher dimension.
We consider the decay of "false kinks," that is, kinks formed in a scalar field theory with a pair of degenerate symmetry-breaking false vacua in 1+1 dimensions. The true vacuum is symmetric. A second scalar field and a peculiar potential are added in order for the kink to be classically stable. We find an expression for the decay rate of a false kink. As with any tunneling event, the rate is proportional to $\exp(-S_E)$ where $S_E$ is the Euclidean action of the bounce describing the tunneling event. This factor varies wildly depending on the parameters of the model. Of interest is the fact t…
We investigate new models for scalar fields in flat and curved spacetime. We note that the global reflection symmetry of the potential that identify the scalar field model does not exclude the presence of internal asymmetries that give rise to asymmetric structures. Despite the asymmetry, the new structures are linearly stable and in the braneworld scenario with an extra dimension of infinite extend, they may generate new families of asymmetric thick branes that are robust against small fluctuations in the warped geometry.
We scatter a meson off of a scalar kink in quantum field theory, at leading order in perturbation theory. We calculate the full quantum state, at leading order, at all times and also check that the reflection and transmission coefficients agree with those which would be obtained in relativistic quantum mechanics.
We consider the (1+1)-dimensional Lorentz-symmetric field-theoretic model with logarithmic potential having a Mexican-hat form with two local minima similar to that of the quartic Higgs potential in conventional electroweak theory with spontaneous symmetry breaking and mass generation. We demonstrate that this model allows topological solutions -- kinks. We analyze the kink excitation spectrum, and show that it does not contain any vibrational modes. We also study the scattering dynamics of kinks for a wide range of initial velocities. The critical value of the initial velocity occurs in kink-…
In this letter, a two-dimensional (2D) gravity-scalar model is studied. This model supports interesting double-kink solutions, and the corresponding metric solutions can be derived analytically. Depending on a tunable parameter $c$, the metric can be symmetric or asymmetric. The Schrödinger-like equation for normal modes of the physical linear perturbation is derived. As $c$ varies, the effective potential can have one or two singular barriers. If $c$ is larger than a critical value, the zero mode will be normalizable, despite of the appearance of a strong repulsive singularity. The double-kin…
In this thesis, we study interactions between topological defects in two-dimensional spacetimes. These defects are called kinks. They are solutions of scalar field theories with localized energy which propagate without losing its shape. In order to understand the resonance phenomenon exhibited by those models, we built a toy model where the kink's vibrational mode turns into a quasinormal mode. This causes the suppression of resonance windows and, consequently, its fractal structure is lost. Considering a higher order polynomial as the scalar field potential, we find kinks with long-range tail…
We study the structure of the manifold of solitary waves in a particular three-component scalar field theoretical model in two-dimensional Minkowski space. These solitary waves involve one, two, three, four, six or seven lumps of energy.
In a scalar field theory that has a symmetric octic potential with a quartic minimum and two quadratic minima, kink and mirror kink solutions have long-range tails. We calculate the force between these kinks when their long-range tails overlap. This is a nonlinear problem, solved using an adiabatic ansatz for the accelerating kinks that leads to a modified, first-order Bogomolny equation. We find the force is repulsive and decays with the fourth power of the kink separation.
The intrinsically relativistic problem of spinless particles subject to a general mixing of vector and scalar kink-like potentials ($\sim \mathrm{tanh} ,γx$) is investigated. The problem is mapped into the exactly solvable Surm-Liouville problem with the Rosen-Morse potential and exact bounded solutions for particles and antiparticles are found. The behaviour of the spectrum is discussed in some detail. An apparent paradox concerning the uncertainty principle is solved by recurring to the concept of effective Compton wavelength.
Many quantum field theoretical models possess non-trivial solutions which are stable for topological reasons. We construct a self-consistent example for a self-interacting scalar field--the quantum (or dressed) kink--using a two particle irreducible effective action in the Hartree approximation. This new solution includes quantum fluctuations determined self-consistently and nonperturbatively at the 1-loop resummed level and allowed to backreact on the classical mean-field profile. This dressed kink is static under the familiar Hartree equations for the time evolution of quantum fields. Becaus…
A method for describing the quantum kink states in the semi-classical limit of several (1+1)-dimensional field theoretical models is developed. We use the generalized zeta function regularization method to compute the one-loop quantum correction to the masses of the kink in the sine-Gordon and cubic sinh-Gordon models and another two ${\rm P}(ϕ)_2$ systems with polynomial self-interactions.
A formalism is presented for computing the higher-order corrections to the worldvolume action of co-dimension one solitons. By modifying its potential, an explicit "kink" solution of a real scalar field in AdS spacetime is found. The formalism is then applied to explicitly compute the kink worldvolume action to quadratic order in two expansion parameters--associated with the hypersurface fluctuation length and the radius of AdS spacetime respectively. Two alternative methods are given for doing this. The results are expressed in terms of the trace of the extrinsic curvature and the intrinsic s…
In this work we identify the manifold of solitary waves arising in a three-component scalar field model using the Bogomol'nyi arrangement of the energy functional. A rich structure of topological and non-topological kinks exists in the different sub-models contained in the theory.
We calculate the leading quantum corrections to the meson form factors of nonrelativistic kinks, at momentum transfer much higher than the meson mass. We consider general scalar theories which need not be integrable. Our approach is much simpler than previous approaches, avoiding any need for counterterms, ordering ambiguities and nonlinear canonical transformations at any order in perturbation theory.
