We propose an approach which, by combining insights from Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG), Topos theory, Non-commutative Geometry à la Connes, and spacetime relationalism, provides fertile ground for the search of an adequate spacetime picture in Quantum Gravity. With this approach, we obtain a novel way of deducing the quantization of the possible values for the area of a surface. One gets the same area values than those from the area operator in standard LQG, but our approach makes a further prediction: some smaller values and sub-divisions are also allowed. In addition, the area arises as a noncommutative distance between two noncommutative points, and thus they should be interpreted as irreducible string-like objects at the physical level (where the area interpretation for the noncommutative distance holds).
As a continuation to [12], we introduce a new formalism for (part of) QG, which we call TQG, since it's based on the NC Tori. This allows us to obtain numerous insights about the nature of time, like its discretization, its regular pace at the macroscopic scale, a solution to the Problem of Time, and a connection with the Measurement Problem and wave function collapse.
I visually explore the features of geodesic orbits in arbitrary stationary axisymmetric vacuum (SAV) spacetimes that are constructed from a complex Ernst potential. Some of the geometric features of integrable and chaotic orbits are highlighted. The geodesic problem for these SAV spacetimes is rewritten as a two degree of freedom problem and the connection between current ideas in dynamical systems and the study of two manifolds sought. The relationship between the Hamilton-Jacobi equations, canonical transformations, constants of motion and Killing tensors are commented on. Wherever possible …
Recently a new time-evolution picture of the Dirac quantum mechanics was defined in charts with spatially flat Robertson-Walker metrics, under the name of Schrödinger picture [I. I. Cotăescu, arXiv:0708.0734] . In the present paper new Dirac quantum modes are found in moving charts of the de Sitter spacetime using the technical advantages offered by this picture. The principal result is a new set of energy eigenspinors which behave as polarized plane waves and form a complete system of orthonormalized solutions of the free Dirac equation.
We argue that the emergent spacetime picture admits a background-independent formulation of cosmic inflation. The inflation in this picture corresponds to the dynamical emergence of spacetime while the conventional inflation is simply an (exponential) expansion of a preexisting spacetime owing to the vacuum energy carried by an inflaton field. We show that the cosmic inflation arises as a time-dependent solution of the matrix quantum mechanics describing the dynamical process of Planck energy condensate in vacuum without introducing any inflaton field as well as an {\it ad hoc} inflation poten…
We prove that the Minkowski spacetime is stable at nonlinear level and to all perturbative orders in the gravitational perturbation in a general class of nonlocal gravitational theories that are unitary and finite at quantum level.
We shall here discuss a new spacetime gauge-covariant Lagrangian formulation of General Relativity by means of the Barbero-Immirzi SU(2)-connection on spacetime. To the best of our knowledge the Lagrangian based on SU(2) spacetime fields seems to appear here for the first time.
Cylindrically symmetric stationary spacetimes are examined in the framework of string-inpired generalized theory of gravity. In four dimensions this theory contains a dilatonic scalar field in addition to gravity. A charged perfect fluid representing fermionic matter is also considered. Explicit solution is given and a discussion of the geometrical properties of the solutions found is carried out.
We give the correct expressions for the spin network evaluations proposed in Class. Quant. Grav. 21 (2004) 3909 as the coefficients of the quantum gravity vacuum wavefunction in the spin network basis.
The choice of the area operator in loop quantum gravity is by no means unique. In addition to the area operator commonly used in loop quantum gravity there is also an area operator introduced by Krasnov in 1998, which gives uniformly spaced area spectra for the horizons of spacetime. Using Krasnov's area operator we consider the thermodynamics of spherically symmetric spacetimes equipped with horizons in loop quantum gravity. Among other things, our approach implies, in a pretty simple manner, that every horizon of spacetime emits thermal radiation and possesses emtropy which, in the natural u…
In this paper, we analyze Vaidya spacetime with an energy dependent metric in Galileon gravity's rainbow. This will be done using the rainbow functions which are motivated from the results obtained in loop quantum gravity approach and non-commutative geometry. We will investigate the Gravitational collapse in this Galileon gravity's rainbow. We will discuss the behavior of singularities formed from the gravitational collapse in this rainbow deformed Galileon gravity.
Motivated by the analogy between the spacetime and the solid with inhomogeneous elasticity modulus, we present an alternative method to obtain the field equation of any diffeomorphism-invariant gravity, by extremizing the constructed entropy function of the displacement vector field of spacetime solid. In general stationary spacetimes, we show that the Wald entropy of horizon arises from the on-shell entropy function of spacetime solid.
Modern ether-drift experiments in vacuum could in principle detect the tiny refractive index that, in a flat-space picture of gravity, is appropriate for an apparatus placed on the Earth's surface. In this picture, in fact, if there were a preferred reference frame, light on the Earth would exhibit a slight anisotropy with definite quantitative differences from General Relativity. By re-analyzing the data published by two modern experiments with rotating optical resonators, and concentrating on the part of the signal that should be free of spurious systematic effects, we have found evidences t…
A recent study by Bojowald and Paily provided a path toward the identification of an effective quantum-spacetime picture of Loop Quantum Gravity, applicable in the "Minkowski regime", the regime where the large-scale (coarse-grained) spacetime metric is flat. A pivotal role in the analysis is played by Loop-Quantum-Gravity-based modifications to the hypersurface deformation algebra, which leave a trace in the Minkowski regime. We here show that the symmetry-algebra results reported by Bojowald and Paily are consistent with a description of spacetime in the Minkowski regime given in terms of th…
In order to construct a quantum theory of gravity, we may have to abandon certain assumptions we were making. In particular, the concept of spacetime as a continuum substratum is questioned. Causal Sets is an attempt to construct a quantum theory of gravity starting with a fundamentally discrete spacetime. In this contribution we review the whole approach, focusing on some recent developments in the kinematics and dynamics of the approach.
For the quadratic theory of gravity with a scalar field, exact solutions are found for gravitational-wave models in Shapovalov~I~type spacetimes, which do not arise in models of the general theory of relativity. The theory of gravity under consideration can effectively describe the early stages of the dynamics of the universe. Type I Shapovalov spaces are the most general form of gravitational-wave Shapovalov spacetimes, whose metric in privileged coordinate systems depends on three variables, including the wave variable. For Einstein vacuum spacetimes, these wave models degenerate into simple…
The literature on quantum-gravity-inspired scenarios for the quantization of spacetime has so far focused on particle-physics-like studies. This is partly justified by the present limitations of our understanding of quantum-gravity theories, but we here argue that valuable insight can be gained through semi-heuristic analyses of the implications for gravitational phenomena of some results obtained in the quantum-spacetime literature. In particular, we show that the types of description of particle propagation that emerged in certain quantum-spacetime frameworks have striking implications for g…
We present a kind of generalized Vaidya solutions of a new cubic gravity in five dimensions whose field equations in spherically spacetime are always second order like the Lovelock gravity. We also study the thermodynamics of its apparent horizon and get its entropy expression and generalized Misner-Sharp energy. Finally we present the first law and second law hold in this gravity. Although all the results are analogue to those in Lovelock gravity, we in fact introduce the contribution of new cubic term in five dimensions where cubic Lovelock term is just zero.
Conformal gravity can elegantly solve the problem of spacetime singularities present in Einstein's gravity. For every physical spacetime, there is an infinite family of conformally-equivalent singularity-free metrics. In the unbroken phase, every non-singular metric is equivalent and can be used to infer the physical properties of the spacetime. In the broken phase, a Higgs-like mechanism should select a certain vacuum, which thus becomes the physical one. However, in the absence of the complete theoretical framework we do not know how to select the right vacuum. In this paper, we study the en…
The objective of the present paper is to study 4-dimensional almost pseudo Ricci symmetric perfect fluid spacetimes $(APRS)_4$. We show that a Robertson-Walker spacetime is $(APRS)_4$ and vice versa under certain condition imposed on its scale factor. Some popular toy models of $F(R)$-gravity are also studied under the current setting and various energy conditions are investigated.
In this paper, the exact vacuum solution of a general plane symmetric spacetime is investigated in metric f(R) gravity with the assumption of constant Ricci scalar. For this solution, we have studied the generalized Landau-Lifshitz energy-momentum complex in this theory to determine the energy distribution expressions for some specific f(R) models. Also, we show that these models satisfy the constant curvature condition.
A free-theory vacuum state of an interacting field theory, e.g. quantum gravity, is unstable at tree level in general due to spontaneous emission of Fock-space particles in any spacetime with no global timelike Killing vectors, such as de Sitter spacetime, in the interaction picture. As an example, the rate of spontaneous emission of Fock-space particles is calculated in phi^4 theory in de Sitter spacetime. It is possible that this apparent spontaneous emission does not correspond to any physical processes because the states are not evolved by the true Hamiltonian in the interaction picture. N…
This paper aims to analyze the generalization of Lema\^ıtre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) spacetime for dissipative dust under the influence of Palatini $f(R)$ gravity. We explore the modified field equations, kinematical variables, and mass function in this scenario. We construct Bianchi identities using conservation and differential equations for shear, expansion, and curvature scalar in the background of Palatini $f(R)$ gravity. We calculated the scalar functions coming from the orthogonal decomposition of the Riemann tensor in this framework. These scalar functions known as structure scalars have bee…
We write the equation of geodesic deviations in the spacetime of $pp$-waves in terms of the Newman-Penrose scalars and apply it to study gravitational waves in quadratic curvature gravity. We show that quadratic curvature gravity $pp$-waves can have a transverse helicity-0 polarization mode and two transverse helicity-2 general relativity-like wave polarizations. A concrete example is given in which we analyze the wave polarizations of an exact impulsive gravitational wave solution to quadratic curvature gravity.
The field equations of the recent nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation are presented in a form that is reminiscent of general relativity. The implications of the nonlocal field equations are studied in the case of conformally flat spacetimes. Even in this simple case, the field equations are intractable. Therefore, to gain insight into the nature of these equations, we investigate the structure of nonlocal gravity in two-dimensional spacetimes. While any smooth 2D spacetime is conformally flat and satisfies Einstein's field equations, only a subset containing either a Ki…
A generalization of two recently proposed general relativity Hamiltonians, to the case of a general (d+1)-dimensional dilaton gravity theory in a manifold with a timelike or spacelike outer boundary, is presented.
In this paper we consider a static, cylindrically symmetric spacetime with coincident f(Q) gravity. Since the field equation of this spacetime in symmetric teleparallel gravity is suitable for choosing the function of f(Q) in the form of power series and exponential forms, perfect fluid solutions of these forms are discussed. Energy densities, directional pressures and energy conditions are plotted and analysed for a few different metric potentials. Although cosmic strings violate all energy conditions in both f(Q) functions, the Levi-Civita solution violates all energy conditions in the power…
The Einstein field equation as an equation of state of a thermodynamical system of spacetime is reconsidered in the present Letter. We argue that a consistent interpretation leads us to identify scalar curvature and cosmological constant terms representing the bulk viscosity of the spacetime fluid. Since Einstein equation itself corresponds to a near-equilibrium state in this interpretation invoking $f(R)$ gravity for nonequilibrium thermodynamics is not required. A logically consistent generalization to include the effect of so called 'tidal forces' due to the Riemann curvature is presented. …
The Einstein equations, apart from being the classical field equations of General Relativity, are also the classical field equations of two other theories of gravity. As the experimental tests of General Relativity are done using the Einstein equations, we do not really know, if gravity is the curvature of a torsionless spacetime, or torsion of a curvatureless spacetime, or if it occurs due to the non-metricity of a curvatureless and torsionless spacetime. However, as the classical actions of all these theories differ from each other by boundary terms, and the Casimir effect is a boundary effe…
We review and discuss the original Kaluza-Klein theory in the framework of modern embedding theories of the spacetime, such as the recent induced matter approach. We show that in spite of their seeming similarity they constitute rather distinct proposals as far as their geometrical structure is concerned.
The incompatibility between GR and QM is generally seen as a sufficient motivation for the development of a theory of Quantum Gravity. If - so a typical argumentation - QM gives a universally valid basis for the description of all natural systems, then the gravitational field should have quantum properties. Together with the arguments against semi-classical theories of gravity, this leads to a strategy which takes a quantization of GR as the natural avenue to Quantum Gravity. And a quantization of the gravitational field would in some sense correspond to a quantization of geometry. Spacetime w…
We present a reconstruction technique for models of $f(R)$ gravity from the Chaplygin scalar field in flat de Sitter spacetimes. Exploiting the equivalence between $f(R)$ gravity and scalar-tensor theories, and treating the Chaplygin gas as a scalar field model in a universe without conventional matter forms, the Lagrangian densities for the $f(R)$ action are derived. Exact $f(R)$ models and corresponding scalar field potentials are obtained for asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes in early and late cosmological expansion histories. It is shown that the reconstructed $f(R)$ models all have Gene…
In the model of de Sitter gauge theory of gravity, the empty homogenous and isotropic spacetimes with constant curvature scalar and nonvanishing homogenous and isotropic torsion must have de Sitter metrics. The static de Sitter spacetime with static, O(3)-symmetric, vector torsion is the only spherically symmetric, vacuum solution with the metric of the form $g_{μν}={\rm diag}(A^2(r),-B^2(r),-r^2,-r^2\sin^2þ)$. The expressions of the torsion for different de Sitter spacetimes are presented. They are different from one to another. The properties of different de Sitter spacetimes with torsion ar…
We investigate the geometrical and physical structures of a pseudo-symmetric spacetime $(PS)_4$ with timelike vector under the condition of conformal flatness. We classify it into two possible types: constant Ricci scalar and closed velocity vector. We further study this spacetime as a solution of $F(R)$-gravity theory and show that the pressure and energy density of the effective cosmological perfect fluid separately possess certain typical relations with the geometry and the gravity sector of the theory. Based on this result, some observational and cosmological analyses are done for the $F(R…
In dilaton gravity theories, we consider a string-like topological defect formed during U(1) gauge symmetry-breaking phase transition in the early Universe, and far from the cosmic string we have vacuum solutions of the generalized Einstein equation. We discuss how they can be related to the flatness of galactic rotation curves.
Small violations of spacetime symmetries have recently been identified as promising Planck-scale signals. This talk reviews how such violations can arise in various approaches to quantum gravity, how the emergent low-energy effects can be described within the framework of relativistic effective field theories, how suitable tests can be identified, and what sensitivities can be expected in current and near-future experiments.
The multipole moments are defined as the multipole expansion coefficients of the gravitational field at infinity. In Newtonian gravity, the multipole moments are determined by the source distribution -- the multipole integrals of the source. In this paper, we show that the multipole moments in general relativity cannot be determined by the multipole integrals of the source. We provide the multipole integrals in static axial spacetimes, such as, the Curzon spacetime. The Curzon spacetime possesses the same multipole integrals of the source with the Schwarzschild spacetime, while they possess di…
We show how classical spacetime emerges from quantum gravity through the study of a quantum FRW cosmological model coupled to a free massive scalar field using a new asymptotic expansion method of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. It is shown that the coherent states of the nonadiabatic basis of a particular generalized invariant give rise to the quantum back reaction of matter field proportional to classical energy and the Einstein-Hamilton-Jacobi with matter becomes equivalent to the classical Einstein equation.
Using the instanton representation method, we re-construct graviton solutions about DeSitter spacetime. We have used this example as a testing arena to expose the internal structure of the method and to establish that it works for known solutions. This paper is a precursor for its application to the construction of new General Relativity solutions in future work.
We explore in stochastic gravity theory whether non-Gaussian noises from the higher order correlation functions of the stress tensor for quantum matter fields when back-reacting on the spacetime may reveal hints of multi-scale structures. Anomalous diffusion may depict how a test particle experiences in a fractal spacetime. The hierarchy of correlations in quantum matter field induces the hierarchy of correlations in geometric objects via the set of Einstein-Langevin equations for each correlation order. This correlation hierarchy kinetic theory conceptual framework, aided by the characteristi…
The instanton representation of Plebanski gravity admits a natural canonical structure where the (densitized) eigenvalues of the CDJ matrix are the basic momentum space variables. Canonically conjugate configuration variables exist for six distinct configurations in the full theory, referred to as quantizable configurations. The CDJ matrix relates to the Petrov classification and principal null directions of spacetime, which we directly correlate to these quantizable degrees of freedom. The implication of this result is the ability to perform a quantization procedure for spacetimes of Petrov T…
In this paper, we will analyze the energy dependent deformation of massive gravity using the formalism of massive gravity's rainbow. So, we will use the Vainshtein mechanism and the dRGT mechanism for the energy dependent massive gravity, and thus analyze a ghost free theory of massive gravity's rainbow. We study the energy dependence of a time-dependent geometry, by analyzing the radiating Vaidya solution in this theory of massive gravity's rainbow. The energy dependent deformation of this Vaidya metric will be performed using suitable rainbow functions.
The gravity action on the piecewise flat Riemannian manifold is formulated using the discrete set of the nondegenerate 4$\times$4 matrices on the 3-simplices as some connection type variables. These variables are the discrete counterpart of the affine (Christoffel) connection used as independent variables in the Palatini form of the Einstein gravity action. Excluding these with the help of the equations of motion we get the original discrete gravity action on the piecewise flat spacetime (Regge action). The discrete version of the diffeomorphisms and path integral are briefly discussed.
We survey some philosophical aspects of the search for a quantum theory of gravity, emphasising how quantum gravity throws into doubt the treatment of spacetime common to the two `ingredient theories' (quantum theory and general relativity), as a 4-dimensional manifold equipped with a Lorentzian metric. After an introduction, we briefly review the conceptual problems of the ingredient theories and introduce the enterprise of quantum gravity We then describe how three main research programmes in quantum gravity treat four topics of particular importance: the scope of standard quantum theory; th…
A spatially flat Robertson-Walker spacetime driven by a cosmological constant is non-conformally coupled to a massless scalar field. The equations of semiclassical gravity are explicitly solved for this case, and a self-consistent de Sitter solution associated with the Bunch-Davies vacuum state is found (the effect of the quantum field is to shift slightly the effective cosmological constant). Furthermore, it is shown that the corrected de Sitter spacetime is stable under spatially-isotropic perturbations of the metric and the quantum state. These results are independent of the free renormaliz…
A quantum-field model of the conformally flat space is formulated using a standard field-theoretical technique, a probability interpretation and a way to establish the classical limit. The starting point is the following: after conformal transformation of the Einstein -- Hilbert action, the conformal factor represents a scalar field with the negative kinetical term and the self-interaction inspired by the cosmological constant. (It has been found that quanta of such action have a negative value as a sequence of the negative energy.) The metric energy-momentum tensor of this scalar field is pro…
We extend the classical general relativistic theory of measurement to include the possibility of existence of higher dimensions. The intrusion of these dimensions in the spacetime interval implies that the inertial mass of a particle in general varies along its worldline if the observations are analyzed assuming the existence of only the four spacetime dimensions. The variations of mass and spin are explored in a simple 5D Kaluza-Klein model.
In this paper, we study the geodesic motion in the spacetime of a SU(2)-colored (A)dS black hole in conformal gravity, and also we investigate spacetime features, such as light spheres and horizons. Moreover, we derive the analytical solutions for the equation of motion of test particles and light rays using Weierstrass elliptic and Kleinian sigma functions. Depending on the particle energy levels and angular momentums, we classify the solutions of the geodesic equations. Furthermore, several examples of possible types of orbits illustrate the results
We develop a systematic study of the equations of motion in the first order gravity with matter fields for degenerate metrics. Like the Hilbert-Palatini action functional for pure gravity, the action functionals for matter fields used are first order. These are defined for both invertible and non- invertible metrics. Description for invertible metrics is equivalent to second order gravity theory with matter. For degenerate metrics the theory describes a different phase. The analysis for tetrads with one zero eigen value in theory with scalar, Abelian vector gauge and fermion matter fields is p…
In the present paper we examine a projectively flat spacetime solution of $F(R)$-gravity theory. It is seen that once we deploy projective flatness in the geometry of the spacetime, the matter field has constant energy density and isotropic pressure. We then make the condition weaker and discuss the effects of projectively harmonic spacetime geometry in $F(R)$-gravity theory and show that the spacetime in this case reduces to a generalised Robertson-Walker spacetime with a shear, vorticity, acceleration free perfect fluid with a specific form of expansion scalar presented in terms of the scale…
In this paper we will study non-anticommutative perturbative quantum gravity on spacetime with a complex metric. After analysing the BRST symmetry of this non-anticommutative perturbative quantum gravity, we will also analyse the effect of shifting all the fields. We will construct a Lagrangian density which is invariant under the original BRST transformations and the shift transformations in the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formalism. Finally, we will show that the sum of the gauge-fixing term and the ghost term for this shift symmetry invariant Lagrangian density can be elegantly written down in …
We consider the motion of test particles in the spacetime of a black hole in f(R) gravity. The complete set of analytic solutions of the geodesic equation in the spacetime of this black hole are presented. The geodesic equations are solved in terms of Weierstrass elliptic functions and derivatives of Kleinian sigma functions. The different types of the resulting orbits are characterized in terms of the conserved energy and angular momentum as well as the cosmological constant $Λ$ and the real constant $β$.
We present a systematic framework to obtain the most general solutions of the equations of motion in first order gravity theory with degenerate tetrads. There are many possible solutions. Generically, these exhibit non-vanishing torsion even in the absence of any matter coupling. These solutions are shown to contain a special set of eight configurations which are associated with the homogeneous model three-geometries of Thurston.
Classically the constraint algebra of general relativity, which generates gauge transformations, is equivalent to spacetime covariance. In LQG, inverse triad corrections lead to an effective Hamiltonian constraint which can lead to a modified constraint algebra. We show, using example of spherically symmetric spacetimes, that a modified constraint algebra does not correspond to spacetime coordinate transformation. In such a scenario the notion of black hole horizon, which is based on spacetime notions, also needs to be reconsidered. A possible modification to the classical trapping horizon con…
We present the reconstruction method of $f(R)$ gravity for the homogeneous and anisotropic Bianchi-I spacetime, which was previously formulated only for homogeneous and isotropic FLRW spacetime. We argue in this paper that for anisotropic spacetimes, the total anisotropy behaves as an independent metric degree of freedom on top of the average scale factor in $f(R)$ gravity. This is not like $GR$, where specifying the form of the average scale factor as a function of time also specify the total anisotropy as a function of time uniqely. We link this peculiar fact to an interesting intertwining b…
