We investigate the Lagrangian formulation of the double-copy correspondence between gauge theories and gravity, up to the cubic order. Building on the definition of the double-copy field as a convolution of two vectors, we obtain free gravitational Lagrangians as products of two Yang-Mills Lagrangians, in a form amenable to be easily extended to the massive case. We discuss the origin of these results from tensionless strings and show the existence of gauge fixings that mix the two spin-one sectors and lead to an alternative, especially simple, version of the free Lagrangian. We then construct cubic vertices for the full double-copy multiplet, comprising a graviton, a two-form and a scalar particle, by means of the Noether procedure. Both at the free and at the cubic level the result gets uniquely fixed only upon imposing, on top of gauge invariance, a left-right Lorentz symmetry ruling contraction of indices among double-copy fields. Whereas the outcome nicely matches the cubic interactions of $\mathcal{N}=0$ supergravity, including the gauge-invariant coupling between the scalar particle and the two-form, such a twofold Lorentz symmetry seems to conflict with the perturbative reconstruction of space-time geometry.
We present a novel double-copy prescription for gauge fields at the Lagrangian level and apply it to the original double copy, couplings to matter and the soft theorem. The Yang-Mills Lagrangian in light-cone gauge is mapped directly to the $\mathcal{N}=0$ supergravity Lagrangian in light-cone gauge to trilinear order, and we show that the obtained result is manifestly equivalent to Einstein gravity at tree level up to this order. The application of the double-copy prescription to couplings to matter is exemplified by scalar and fermionic QCD and finally the soft-collinear effective QCD Lagran…
We construct the pure gravity Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian, to cubic order, using the BRST convolution product of two Yang-Mills theories, in conjunction with the Bern-Carrasco-Johansson (BCJ) double-copy.
We show that double field theory arises from the color-kinematic double copy of Yang-Mills theory. A precise double copy prescription for the Yang-Mills action at quadratic and cubic order is provided that yields the double field theory action in which the duality invariant dilaton has been integrated out. More precisely, at quadratic order this yields the gauge invariant double field theory, while at cubic order it yields the cubic double field theory action subject to a gauge condition that originates from Siegel gauge in string field theory.
We show that the double copy of gauge theory amplitudes to $\mathcal{N}=0$ supergravity amplitudes extends from tree level to loop level. We first explain that color-kinematic duality is a condition for the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin operator and the action of a field theory with cubic interaction terms to double copy to a consistent gauge theory. We then apply this argument to Yang-Mills theory, where color-kinematic duality is known to be satisfied onshell at tree level. Finally, we show that the latter restriction can only lead to terms that can be absorbed in a sequence of field redefinitio…
We explore extensions of the double copy to massive theories and find a new cubic theory with a local double copy. We consider the nonlinear sigma model and the special galileon theory, massless versions of which are known to be related through the double copy. We show that by performing a Kaluza-Klein reduction of these theories from five dimensions down to four, a double copy relation exists between the resulting massive four-dimensional scalar field theories. This requires the vanishing contribution of new galileon terms arising in high dimensions. We further explore if other interactions t…
Conformal supergravity amplitudes are obtained from the double-copy construction using gauge-theory amplitudes, and compared to direct calculations starting from conformal supergravity Lagrangians. We consider several different theories: minimal ${\cal N}=4$ conformal supergravity, non-minimal ${\cal N}=4$ Berkovits-Witten conformal supergravity, mass-deformed versions of these theories, as well as supersymmetry truncations thereof. Coupling the theories to a Yang-Mills sector is also considered. For all cases we give the gravity Lagrangians that the double copy implicitly generates. The two m…
We apply a recently presented BRST procedure to construct the Largangian cubic vertex of higher-spin gauge field triplets interacting with massive free scalars. In flat space, the spin-s triplet propagates the series of irreducible spin-s, s-2,..,0/1 modes which couple independently to corresponding conserved currents constructed from the scalars. The simple covariantization of the flat space result is not enough in AdS, as new interaction vertices appear. We present in detail the cases of spin-2 and spin-3 triplets coupled to scalars. Restricting to a single irreducible spin-s mode we uncover…
We construct the gravitational theory emerging from the double-copy of massive scalar quantum chromodynamics in general dimensions. The resulting two-form-dilaton-gravity theory couples to flavored massive scalars gravitationally and via the dilaton. It displays scalar self-interaction terms of arbitrary even order in the fields but quadratic in derivatives. We work out the emerging Lagrangian explicitly up to the sixth order in scalar fields and propose an all order form.
We find double copy relations between classical radiating solutions in Yang-Mills theory coupled to dynamical color charges and their counterparts in a cubic bi-adjoint scalar field theory which interacts linearly with particles carrying bi-adjoint charge. The particular color-to-kinematics replacements we employ are motivated by the BCJ double copy correspondence for on-shell amplitudes in gauge and gravity theories. They are identical to those recently used to establish relations between classical radiating solutions in gauge theory and in dilaton gravity. Our explicit bi-adjoint solutions a…
We show that the BRST Lagrangian double copy construction of $\mathcal{N}=0$ supergravity as the `square' of Yang-Mills theory finds a natural interpretation in terms of homotopy algebras. We significantly expand on our previous work arguing the validity of the double copy at the loop level, and we give a detailed derivation of the double copied Lagrangian and BRST operator. Our constructions are very general and can be applied to a vast set of examples.
We investigate the existence of double copy structure, or the lack thereof, in higher derivative operators for Nambu-Goldstone bosons. At the leading ${\cal O}(p^2)$, tree amplitudes of Nambu-Goldstone bosons in the adjoint representation can be (trivially) expressed as the double copy of itself and the cubic bi-adjoint scalar theory, through the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye bilinear kernel. At the next-to-leading ${\cal O}(p^4)$ there exist four operators in general, among which we identify one operator whose amplitudes exhibit the flavor-kinematics duality and can be written as the double copy of ${\c…
The effective Lagrangian of electromagnetic fields at the cubic order in field strength has been considered. This generalized Lagrangian is motivated by electrodynamics on non-commutative spaces. We find the canonical and symmetrical energy-momentum tensors and show that they possess non-zero traces. The propagation of a linearly polarized laser beam in the external transverse magnetic field is investigated. We evaluate the induced ellipticity which allows us to obtain a constraint on parameters introduced from the PVLAS experimental data.
We fulfill the detailed analysis of coupling the charged bosonic higher spin fields to external constant electromagnetic field in first order in external field strength. Cubic interaction vertex of arbitrary massive and massless bosonic higher spin fields with external field is found. Construction is based on deformation of free Lagrangian and free gauge transformations by terms linear in electromagnetic field strength. In massive case a formulation with Stueckelberg fields is used. We begin with most general form of deformations for Lagrangian and gauge transformations, admissible by Lorentz …
We renormalize a six dimensional cubic theory to four loops in the MSbar scheme where the scalar is in a bi-adjoint representation. The underlying model was originally derived in a problem relating to gravity being a double copy of Yang-Mills theory. As a field theory in its own right we find that it has a curious property in that while unexpectedly there is no one loop contribution to the $β$-function the two loop coefficient is negative. It therefore represents an example where asymptotic freedom is determined by the two loop term of the $β$-function. We also examine a multi-adjoint cubic th…
In this paper, we compute the higher derivative amplitudes arising from shift symmetric-invariant actions for both the non-linear sigma model and the special galileon symmetries, and provide explicit expressions for their Lagrangians. We find that, beyond leading order, the equivalence between shift symmetries, enhanced single soft limits, and compatibility with the double copy procedure breaks down. In particular, we have shown that the most general even-point amplitudes of a colored-scalar satisfying the Kleiss-Kuijf (KK) and Bern-Carrasco-Johansson (BCJ) relations are compatible with the no…
The duality between color and kinematics was originally observed for purely adjoint massless gauge theories, and later found to hold even after introducing massive fermionic and scalar matter in arbitrary gauge-group representations. Such a generalization was critical for obtaining both loop amplitudes in pure Einstein gravity and realistic gravitational matter from the double copy. In this paper we elaborate on the double copy that yields amplitudes in gravitational theories coupled to flavored massive matter with spin, which is relevant to the problems of black-hole scattering and gravitatio…
We show how to double-copy Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET) to Heavy Black Hole Effective Theory (HBET) for spin $s\leq 1$. In particular, the double copy of spin-$s$ HQET with scalar QCD produces spin-$s$ HBET, while the double copy of spin-1/2 HQET with itself gives spin-1 HBET. Finally, we present novel all-order-in-mass Lagrangians for spin-1 heavy particles.

This thesis includes several original results. All of them are already published or submitted for publication. I present here the short summary of main results: The ultraviolet singular structure of the bulk-to-bulk propagators for higher spin gauge fields in AdS4 space is analyzed in details. One loop mass renormalization is studied on a simple example. The conformal invariant Lagrangian with the k-th power of Laplacian for the hierarchy of conformally coupled scalars with increasing scaling dimensions connected with the k-th Euler density is rederived using the Fefferman-Graham ambient space…
Recently, a double-copy formalism was used to calculate gravitational radiation from classical Yang-Mills radiation solutions. This work shows that Yang-Mills theory coupled to a biadjoint scalar field admits a radiative double copy that agrees with solutions in Einstein-Yang-Mills theory at the lowest finite order. Within this context, the trace-reversed metric $\bar{h}^{μν}$ is a natural double copy of the gauge boson $A^{μa}$. This work provides additional evidence that solutions in gauge and gravity theories are related, even though their respective Lagrangians and nonlinear equations of m…
We consider the double copy of massive Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions, whose decoupling limit is a nonlinear sigma model. The latter may be regarded as the leading terms in the low energy effective theory of a heavy Higgs model, in which the Higgs has been integrated out. The obtained double copy effective field theory contains a massive spin-2, massive spin-1 and a massive spin-0 field, and we construct explicitly its interacting Lagrangian up to fourth order in fields. We find that up to this order, the spin-2 self interactions match those of the dRGT massive gravity theory, and that a…
In cubic-order Horndeski theories where a scalar field $ϕ$ is coupled to nonrelativistic matter with a field-dependent coupling $Q(ϕ)$, we derive the most general Lagrangian having scaling solutions on the isotropic and homogenous cosmological background. For constant $Q$ including the case of vanishing coupling, the corresponding Lagrangian reduces to the form $L=Xg_2(Y)-g_3(Y)\square ϕ$, where $X=-\partial_μϕ\partial^μϕ/2$ and $g_2, g_3$ are arbitrary functions of $Y=Xe^{λϕ}$ with constant $λ$. We obtain the fixed points of the scaling Lagrangian for constant $Q$ and show that the $ϕ$-matter…
In the framework of ordinary-derivative approach, conformal gravity in space-time of dimension six is studied. The field content, in addition to conformal graviton field, includes two auxiliary rank-2 symmetric tensor fields, two Stueckelberg vector fields and one Stueckelberg scalar field. Gauge invariant Lagrangian with conventional kinetic terms and the corresponding gauge transformations are obtained. One of the rank-2 tensor fields and the scalar field have canonical conformal dimension. With respect to these fields, the Lagrangian contains, in addition to other terms, a cubic potential. …
We derive a non-perturbative, Lagrangian-level formulation of the double copy in two spacetime dimensions. Our results elucidate the field theoretic underpinnings of the double copy in a broad class of scalar theories which can include masses and higher-dimension operators. An immediate corollary is the amplitudes-level double copy at all orders in perturbation theory. Applied to certain integrable models, the double copy defines an isomorphism between Lax connections, Wilson lines, and infinite towers of conserved currents. We also implement the double copy at the level of non-perturbative cl…
Perturbiner expansion provides a generating function for all Berends-Giele currents in a given quantum field theory. We apply this method to various effective field theories with and without color degrees of freedom. In the colored case, we study the U(N) non-linear sigma model of Goldstone bosons (NLSM) in a recent parametrization due to Cheung and Shen, as well as its extension involving a coupling to the bi-adjoint scalar. We propose a Lagrangian and a Cachazo-He-Yuan formula for the latter valid in multi-trace sectors and systematically calculate its amplitudes. Furthermore, we make a simi…
We classify all the six derivative Lagrangians of gravity, whose traced field equations are of second or third order, in arbitrary dimensions. In the former case, the Lagrangian in dimensions greater than six, reduces to an arbitrary linear combination of the six dimensional Euler density and the two linearly independent cubic Weyl invariants. In five dimensions, besides the independent cubic Weyl invariant, we obtain an interesting cubic combination, whose field equations for static spherically symmetric spacetimes are of second order. In the later case, in arbitrary dimensions we obtain two …
We derive a closed form expression for the light-cone Lagrangian describing pure gravity on a four-dimensional de Sitter background. We provide a perturbative expansion, of this Lagrangian, to cubic order in the fields.
We review the recently discovered duality between color and kinematics in gauge theories. This duality leads to a remarkably simple double-copy relation between diagrammatic numerators of gravity scattering amplitudes and gauge-theory ones. We summarize nontrivial evidence that the duality and double-copy property holds to all loop orders. We also comment on other developments, including a proof that the gauge-theory duality leads to the gravity double-copy property, and the identification of gauge-theory Lagrangians whose double copies yield gravity Lagrangians.
We consider a broad class of massive four dimensional effective theories describing an infinite tower of charged massive spin 1 states, interacting with massless spin 1 and spin 0. The spectrum is chosen to be the same as that appears in the Kaluza-Klein theory reduction of 5d Yang-Mills to ensure the absence of any spurious poles in a possible double copy formulation. The effective theories are characterized by multiple different couplings between different fields which are unconstrained by symmetries and low energy criteria. Remarkably, by demanding that the scattering amplitudes preserve co…
We study solutions in non-linear electrodynamics (NED) and establish several general results. We show, that the $SO(2)$ electric-magnetic duality symmetry is restrictive enough to allow for reconstruction of the NED Lagrangian from the spherically-symmetric electrostatic (Coulomb-like) solution -- although there are infinitely many different NED theories admitting a given solution, there exists a unique $SO(2)$ invariant one among them. We introduce a general algorithm for constructing new $SO(2)$ invariant NED theories in the conventional approach, where only a few examples are available. We …
We present all scalar-tensor Lagrangians that are cubic in second derivatives of a scalar field, and that are degenerate, hence avoiding Ostrogradsky instabilities. Thanks to the existence of constraints, they propagate no more than three degrees of freedom, despite having higher order equations of motion. We also determine the viable combinations of previously identified quadratic degenerate Lagrangians and the newly established cubic ones. Finally, we study whether the new theories are connected to known scalar-tensor theories such as Horndeski and beyond Horndeski, through conformal or disf…
We argue that the complex transformation relating the Schwarzschild to the Taub-NUT metric, introduced by Talbot, is in fact an electric-magnetic duality transformation. We show that at null infinity, the complex transformation is equivalent to a complexified BMS supertranslation, which rotates the supertranslation and the dual (magnetic) supertranslation charges. This can also be seen from the cubic coupling between the classical source and its background, which for Taub-NUT is given by a complex phase rotation acting on gravitational minimal couplings. The same phase rotation generates dyons…
We propose a method of construction of a cubic interaction in massless Higher Spin gauge theory both in flat and in AdS space-times of arbitrary dimensions. We consider a triplet formulation of the Higher Spin gauge theory and generalize the Higher Spin symmetry algebra of the free model to the corresponding algebra for the case of cubic interaction. The generators of this new algebra carry indexes which label the three Higher Spin fields involved into the cubic interaction. The method is based on the use of oscillator formalism and on the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) technique. We derive …
We explore various tree-level double copy constructions for amplitudes including massive particles with spin. By working in general dimensions, we use that particles with spins $s\leq 2$ are fundamental to argue that the corresponding double copy relations partially follow from compactification of their massless counterparts. This massless origin fixes the coupling of gluons, dilatons and axions to matter in a characteristic way (for instance fixing the gyromagnetic ratio), whereas the graviton couples universally reflecting the equivalence principle. For spin-1 matter we conjecture all-order …
We expose a double-copy structure in the scattering amplitudes of the generic Jordan family of N=2 Maxwell-Einstein and Yang-Mills/Einstein supergravity theories in four and five dimensions. The Maxwell-Einstein supergravity amplitudes are obtained through the color/kinematics duality as a product of two gauge-theory factors; one originating from pure N=2 super-Yang-Mills theory and the other from the dimensional reduction of a bosonic higher-dimensional pure Yang-Mills theory. We identify a specific symplectic frame in four dimensions for which the on-shell fields and amplitudes from the doub…
The recent study by Bowers and Rajagopal on the possible structures for the QCD crystalline color superconducting phase favors a cubic structure and allows for a first discussion of the QCD dynamics in the crystalline phase. The cubic structure leads to complete breaking of traslation invariance and to three phonon modes. We discuss the expected form of the effective Lagrangian and the phonon dispersion laws assuming the proposed crystal structure. Besides the interest for QCD and the related possible relevance to compact stars these considerations may become useful to atomic systems exhibitin…
It is well-known that General Relativity (GR) in three spacetime dimensions (3D) has no well-defined Newtonian limit. Recently, a static solution mimicking the behaviour of the expected Newtonian potential has been found in arXiv:1904.11001 by studying the classical double copy of a point charge in gauge theory. This is the first example where the vacuum solution in the gauge theory leads to a non-vacuum solution on the gravity side. The resulting energy-momentum tensor was attributed to a free scalar ghost field; however, alternatively, the source can be seen as one resulting from a spacelike…
We find the full interacting Lagrangian and Hamiltonian for quantum strings in a near plane wave limit of AdS_4 x CP^3. The leading curvature corrections give rise to cubic and quartic terms in the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian that we compute in full. The Lagrangian is found as the type IIA Green-Schwarz superstring in the light-cone gauge employing a superspace construction with 32 grassmann-odd coordinates. The light-cone gauge for the fermions is non-trivial since it should commute with the supersymmetry condition. We provide a prescription to properly fix the kappa-symmetry gauge condition t…
We consider systems of higher spin gauge fields that are described by a free field Lagrangian and one interaction of arbitrary order $N$ that is local and satisfies abelian gauge invariance. Such "solitary" interactions are derived from Noether potentials solving the Noether equations. They are constructed using a free conformal field theory carried by the same flat space as the higher spin fields. In this field theory we consider $N$-loop functions of conserved, conformally covariant currents, they are UV divergent. The residue of the first order pole in the dimensional regularisation approac…
We investigate $U(1)^{\,n}$ supersymmetric Born-Infeld Lagrangians with a second non-linearly realized supersymmetry. The resulting non-linear structure is more complex than the square root present in the standard Born-Infeld action, and nonetheless the quadratic constraints determining these models can be solved exactly in all cases containing three vector multiplets. The corresponding models are classified by cubic holomorphic prepotentials. Their symmetry structures are associated to projective cubic varieties.
The structure of a cubic Lagrangian vertex is clarified for irreducible fields of helicities $s_1, s_2, s_3$ in a $d$-dimensional Minkowski space. An explicit form of the operator $\mathcal{Z}_j$ entering the vertex in a non-multiplicative way (examined in arXiv:2105.12030[hep-th] for $j=1$) is obtained. The solution is found within the BRST approach with complete BRST operators, which contain all constraints corresponding to the conditions that extract the irreducible fields, including trace operators.
On the basis of recent results extending non-trivially the Poincaré symmetry, we investigate the properties of bosonic multiplets including $2-$form gauge fields. Invariant free Lagrangians are explicitly built which involve possibly $3-$ and $4-$form fields. We also study in detail the interplay between this symmetry and a U(1) gauge symmetry, and in particular the implications of the automatic gauge-fixing of the latter associated to a residual gauge invariance, as well as the absence of self-interaction terms.
Galileons are higher-derivative theories of a real scalar which nevertheless admit second order equations of motion. They have interesting applications as dark energy models and in early universe cosmology, and have been conjectured to arise as descriptions of brane dynamics in string theory. In the present paper, we study the bosonic sector of globally N=1 supersymmetric extensions of the cubic Galileon Lagrangian in detail. Supersymmetry requires that the Galileon scalar now becomes paired with a second real scalar field. We prove that the presence of this second scalar causes the equations …
Lorentz invariant derivative interactions for a single spin-2 field are investigated, up to the cubic order. We start from the most general Lorentz invariant terms involving two spacetime derivatives, which are polynomials in the spin-2 field as well as its first derivatives. Using a perturbative Arnowitt-Deser-Misner analysis, we determined the parameters such that the corresponding Hamiltonian possesses a Lagrange multiplier, which would signify there are at most 5 degrees of freedom that are propagating. The resulting derivative terms are linear combinations of terms coming from the expansi…
We drastically simplify the problem of linearizing a general higher-order theory of gravity. We reduce it to the evaluation of its Lagrangian on a particular Riemann tensor depending on two parameters, and the computation of two derivatives with respect to one of those parameters. We use our method to construct a D-dimensional cubic theory of gravity which satisfies the following properties: 1) it shares the spectrum of Einstein gravity, i.e., it only propagates a transverse and massless graviton on a maximally symmetric background; 2) the relative coefficients of the different curvature invar…
