We renormalize a six dimensional cubic theory to four loops in the MSbar scheme where the scalar is in a bi-adjoint representation. The underlying model was originally derived in a problem relating to gravity being a double copy of Yang-Mills theory. As a field theory in its own right we find that it has a curious property in that while unexpectedly there is no one loop contribution to the $β$-function the two loop coefficient is negative. It therefore represents an example where asymptotic freedom is determined by the two loop term of the $β$-function. We also examine a multi-adjoint cubic theory in order to see whether this is a more universal property of these models.

We consider scattering of massless higher-spin particles in the eikonal regime in four dimensions. By demanding the absence of asymptotic superluminality, corresponding to positivity of the eikonal phase, we place constraints on the possible cubic couplings which can appear in the theory. The cubic couplings come in two types: lower-derivative non-abelian vertices, and higher-derivative abelian vertices made out of gauge-invariant curvature tensors. We find that the abelian couplings between massless higher spins lead to an asymptotic time advance for certain choices of polarizations, indicati…
This work deals with global vortices in the three-dimensional spacetime. We study the case of a simple model with $U(1)$ symmetry and find a way to describe stable, finite energy global vortices. The price we pay to stabilize the solution is the presence of scale invariance, but we have found a way to trade it with an electric charge in a medium with generalized permittivity, which is further used to capture the basic feature of asymptotic freedom.
We consider massive higher-spin multiplets coupled to quantum gravity and compute their contributions to the gravitational beta functions at one loop. Such theories, if quantized with the Feynman prescription, would contain ghosts. Instead, those degrees of freedom are turned into purely virtual particles by means of the fakeon prescription and the resulting theories are both renormalizable and unitary. We extract the necessary number of fields to obtain asymptotic freedom by solving the relevant renormalization-group equations in the ultraviolet limit. We show that in the case of irreducible …
The ultraviolet completion of gauge theories by higher derivative terms can dramatically change their behavior at high energies. The requirement of asymptotic freedom imposes very stringent constraints that are only satisfied by a small family of higher derivative theories. If the number of derivatives is large enough ($n > 4$) the theory is strongly interacting both at extreme infrared and ultraviolet regimes whereas it remains asymptotically free for a low number of extra derivatives ($n \leqslant 4$). In all cases the theory improves its ultraviolet behavior leading in some cases to ultravi…
${Z}_2$-Yukawa-QCD models are a minimalistic model class with a Yukawa and a QCD-like gauge sector that exhibits a regime with asymptotic freedom in all its marginal couplings in standard perturbation theory. We discover the existence of further asymptotically free trajectories for these models by exploiting generalized boundary conditions. We construct such trajectories as quasi-fixed points for the Higgs potential within different approximation schemes. We substantiate our findings first in an effective-field-theory approach, and obtain a comprehensive picture using the functional renormaliz…
We study the effect of Lorentz symmetry violation (LSV) on the behaviour at high energy of SU(N) gauge theory with quarks in the fundamental representation. The approach is similar to that for QED treated in a previous paper. In contrast to QED, standard Lorentz invariant QCD is asymptotically free. Our aim is to explore the structure of the renormalisation group at high energy and hence weak coupling without requiring the Lorentz symmetry breaking to be small. The simplest type of LSV leaves the theory invariant under a subgroup of the Lorentz group that preserves a (time-like) 4-vector. We e…
We constrain theories of a massive spin-2 particle coupled to a massless spin-2 particle by demanding the absence of a time advance in eikonal scattering. This is an $S$-matrix consideration that leads to model-independent constraints on the cubic vertices present in the theory. Of the possible cubic vertices for the two spin-2 particles, the requirement of subluminality leaves a particular linear combination of cubic vertices of the Einstein--Hilbert type. Either the cubic vertices must appear in this combination or new physics must enter at a scale parametrically the same as the mass of the …
Conventional lattice formulations of $θ$ vacua in the $1+1$-dimensional $\text{O}(3)$ nonlinear sigma model suffer from a sign problem. Here, we construct the first sign-problem-free regularization for arbitrary $θ$. Using efficient lattice Monte Carlo algorithms, we demonstrate how a Hamiltonian model of spin-$\tfrac12$ degrees of freedom on a 2-dimensional spatial lattice reproduces both the infrared sector for arbitrary $θ$, as well as the ultraviolet physics of asymptotic freedom. Furthermore, as a model of qubits on a two-dimensional square lattice with only nearest-neighbor interactions,…
New approach to Borel summation of divergent series and critical exponent estimates for an N-vector cubic model in three dimensions from five-loop εexpansions
We provide strong evidence that the asymptotically free (1+1)-dimensional non-linear O(3) sigma model can be regularized using a quantum lattice Hamiltonian, referred to as the "Heisenberg-comb", that acts on a Hilbert space with only two qubits per spatial lattice site. The Heisenberg-comb consists of a spin-half anti-ferromagnetic Heisenberg-chain coupled anti-ferromagnetically to a second local spin-half particle at every lattice site. Using a world-line Monte Carlo method we show that the model reproduces the universal step-scaling function of the traditional model up to correlation length…
