In this paper, we compute the higher derivative amplitudes arising from shift symmetric-invariant actions for both the non-linear sigma model and the special galileon symmetries, and provide explicit expressions for their Lagrangians. We find that, beyond leading order, the equivalence between shift symmetries, enhanced single soft limits, and compatibility with the double copy procedure breaks down. In particular, we have shown that the most general even-point amplitudes of a colored-scalar satisfying the Kleiss-Kuijf (KK) and Bern-Carrasco-Johansson (BCJ) relations are compatible with the non-linear sigma model symmetries. Similarly, their double copy is compatible with the special galileon symmetries. We showed this by fixing the dimensionless coefficients of these effective field theories in such a way that the arising amplitudes are compatible with the double copy procedure. We find that this can be achieved for the even-point amplitudes, but not for the odd ones. These results imply that not all operators invariant under the shift symmetries under consideration are compatible with the double copy.
We give a double copy construction for the symmetries of the self-dual sectors of Yang-Mills (YM) and gravity, in the light-cone formulation. We find an infinite set of double copy constructible symmetries. We focus on two families which correspond to the residual diffeomorphisms on the gravitational side. For the first one, we find novel non-perturbative double copy rules in the bulk. The second family has a more striking structure, as a non-perturbative gravitational symmetry is obtained from a perturbatively defined symmetry on the YM side. At null infinity, we find the YM origin of the sub…
We present a novel double-copy prescription for gauge fields at the Lagrangian level and apply it to the original double copy, couplings to matter and the soft theorem. The Yang-Mills Lagrangian in light-cone gauge is mapped directly to the $\mathcal{N}=0$ supergravity Lagrangian in light-cone gauge to trilinear order, and we show that the obtained result is manifestly equivalent to Einstein gravity at tree level up to this order. The application of the double-copy prescription to couplings to matter is exemplified by scalar and fermionic QCD and finally the soft-collinear effective QCD Lagran…
The double copy formalism provides an intriguing connection between gauge theories and gravity. It was first demonstrated in the perturbative context of scattering amplitudes but recently the formalism has been applied to exact classical solutions in gauge theories such as the monopole and instanton. In this paper we will investigate how duality symmetries in the gauge theory double copy to gravity and relate these to solution generating transformations and the action of $Sl(2,R)$ in general relativity.
We examine the structure of infrared singularities in QCD and quantum General Relativity, from the point of view of the recently conjectured double copy property which relates scattering amplitudes in non-Abelian gauge theories with gravitational counterparts. We show that IR divergences in both theories are consistent with the double copy procedure, to all orders in perturbation theory, thus providing all loop-level evidence for the conjecture. We further comment on the relevance, or otherwise, to the so-called dipole formula, a conjecture for the complete structure of IR singularities in QCD…
We show that the double-copy structure of gravity forbids divergences in pure half-maximal (16 supercharge) supergravity at four and five points at one loop in D<8 and at two loops in D<6. We link the cancellations that render these supergravity amplitudes finite to corresponding ones that eliminate forbidden color factors from the divergences of pure nonsupersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The vanishing of the two-loop four-point divergence in D=5 half-maximal supergravity is an example where a valid counterterm satisfying the known symmetries exists, yet is not present. We also give explicit fo…
Soft theorems can be recast as Ward identities of asymptotic symmetries. We review such relation for the leading and subleading soft graviton theorems in arbitrary even dimensions. While soft theorems are trivially generalized to dimensions higher than four, the charges of asymptotic symmetries are plagued by divergences requiring a renormalization. We argue that the renormalized charges of these symmetries can be determined by rewriting soft theorems as Ward identities. In order to show that the charges of such identities generate asymptotic symmetries, we propose a suitable commutation relat…
We introduce a covariant Multipole Expansion for the scattering of a massive particle emitting photons or gravitons in $D$ dimensions. We find that these amplitudes exhibit very powerful features such as universality, soft exponentiation, orbit and spin multipoles, etc. Using ${\rm{SO}}(D)$ representation theory we show that the photon and graviton amplitudes are related via a new double copy procedure for massive spinning states. All these features are then promoted to properties of the observables arising in the classical version of such theories. Focusing on radiation, we provide two main a…
Classical double copy is an intriguing relationship between classical solutions to a gravity theory and solutions to classical Yang-Mills equations. Although formally inspired by the double copy relation between (quantum) scattering amplitudes in QCD and perturbative gravity, a direct proof of the former from the latter continues to be under investigation. In this paper, we attempt to prove classical double copy from the color-kinematics duality symmetry of QCD amplitudes in a restricted setting. That is we consider radiative solutions with classical scattering sources in Yang-Mills theory and…
A characteristic value formulation of the Weyl double copy leads to an asymptotic formulation. We find that the Weyl double copy holds asymptotically in cases where the full solution is algebraically general, using rotating STU supergravity black holes as an example. The asymptotic formulation provides clues regarding the relation between asymptotic symmetries that follows from the double copy. Using the C-metric as an example, we show that a previous interpretation of this gravity solution as a superrotation has a single copy analogue relating the appropriate Liénard-Wiechert potential to a l…
Recently, the leading soft gluon theorem with single soft emission was shown to be the Ward identity of a two dimensional $\cal G$-Kac-Moody symmetry. In this note, we show that the leading soft gluon theorem can be interpreted as the Ward identity for the asymptotic symmetries of non-Abelian gauge theory. We further argue that the sub-leading soft gluon theorem can follow from the same symmetry.
We investigate the large gauge transformations of a two-form gauge field in four-dimensional Minkowski space. Our goal is to establish a connection between these asymptotic symmetries and the scalar soft theorems described by Campiglia, Coito and Mizera whereas the soft scalar mode should be interpreted in terms of its two-form dual counterpart.
In [1,2] it was shown that the subleading soft photon theorem in tree level amplitudes in massless QED is equivalent to a new class of symmetries of the theory parameterized by a vector field on the celestial sphere. In this paper, we extend these results to the subleading soft photon theorem in any Effective Field Theory containing photons and an arbitrary spectrum of massless particles. We show that the charges associated to the above class of symmetries are sensitive to certain three point functions of the theory and are corrected by irrelevant operators of specific dimensions. Our analysis…
A deep connection has been recently established between soft theorems and symmetries at null infinity in gravity and gauge theories, recasting the former as Ward identities of the latter. In particular, different orders (in the frequency of the soft particle) in the soft theorems are believed to be controlled by different asymptotic symmetries. In this paper we argue that this needs not be the case by focusing on the soft photon theorem. We argue that the sub-leading soft factor follows from the same symmetry responsible for the leading one, namely certain residual (large) gauge transformation…

In an earlier paper we have constructed a basis of massless single particle quantum states which transform in the unitary principal series representation of the four dimensional Lorentz group. The S-matrix written in this basis gives rise to the Mellin transformed amplitude of Pasterski-Shao-Strominger and its generalization. In this basis the particle can be thought of as living on the null-infinity in the Minkowski space. In this paper we take some preliminary steps to see how the connection between soft theorems and symmetries work out in this picture. For simplicity we consider only the le…
The subleading corrections to factorization theorems for soft bremsstrahlung in nonabelian gauge theories and gravity are investigated in the case of a five point amplitude with four scalars. Building on recent results, we write the action of the angular momentum operators on scattering amplitudes as derivatives with respect to the Mandelstam invariants to uncover a double copy structure in the contribution of the soft graviton to the amplitude, both in the leading term and the first correction. Using our approach, we study Gribov's theorem as extended to nonabelian gauge theories and gravity …
We discuss constraints imposed by soft limits for effective field theories arising from symmetry breaking. In particular, we consider those associated with anomalous conformal symmetry as well as duality symmetries in supergravity. We verify these soft theorems for the dilaton effective action relevant for the a-theorem, as well as the one-loop effective action for N=4 supergravity. Using the universality of leading transcendental coefficients in the alpha' expansion of string theory amplitudes, we study the matrix elements of operator R^4 with half maximal supersymmetry. We construct the non-…
Various equivalences between so-called soft theorems which constrain scattering amplitudes and Ward identities related to asymptotic symmetries have recently been established in gauge theories and gravity. So far these equivalences have been restricted to the case of massless matter fields, the reason being that the asymptotic symmetries are defined at null infinity. The restriction is however unnatural from the perspective of soft theorems which are insensitive to the masses of the external particles. In this work we remove the aforementioned restriction in the context of scalar QED. Inspired…
There is an increasing interest in nonlinear supersymmetries in cosmological model building. Independently, elegant expressions for the all-tree amplitudes in models with nonlinear symmetries, like D3 brane Dirac-Born-Infeld-Volkov-Akulov theory, were recently discovered. Using the generalized background field method we show how, in general, nonlinear symmetries of the action, bosonic and fermionic, constrain amplitudes beyond soft limits. The same identities control, for example, bosonic E_{7(7)} scalar sector symmetries as well as the fermionic goldstino symmetries. We present a universal de…
The existing equivalence between (generalized) BMS Ward identities with leading and subleading soft graviton theorems is extended to the case where the scattering particles are massive scalars. By extending the action of generalized BMS group off null infinity at late times, we show that there is a natural action of such group not only on the radiative data at null infinity but also on the scattering data of the massive scalar field. This leads to a formulation of Ward identities associated to the generalized BMS group when the scattering states are massive scalars or massless gravitons and we…
We consider a broad class of massive four dimensional effective theories describing an infinite tower of charged massive spin 1 states, interacting with massless spin 1 and spin 0. The spectrum is chosen to be the same as that appears in the Kaluza-Klein theory reduction of 5d Yang-Mills to ensure the absence of any spurious poles in a possible double copy formulation. The effective theories are characterized by multiple different couplings between different fields which are unconstrained by symmetries and low energy criteria. Remarkably, by demanding that the scattering amplitudes preserve co…
We recast the soft $S$-matrices on the celestial sphere as correlation functions of certain $2$-dimensional models of topological defects. In pointing out the double copy structure between the soft photon and soft graviton cases, we arrive at a putative classical double copy between the corresponding topological models and a rederivation of gauge invariance and the equivalence principle as Ward identities of the $2$-dimensional theories.
S-matrix elements exhibit universal factorization when multiple infrared photons are emitted in scattering processes. We explicitly show that the leading soft factorization of tree-level amplitudes with the emission of any number of soft photons can be interpreted as the Ward identity of the asymptotic symmetry of gauge theory.
We show that time intervals of width $Δτ$ in 3-dimensional conformal field theories (CFT$_3$) on the Lorentzian cylinder admit an infinite dimensional symmetry enhancement in the limit $Δτ\rightarrow 0$. The associated vector fields are approximate solutions to the conformal Killing equations in the strip labelled by a function and a conformal Killing vector on the sphere. An Inonu-Wigner contraction yields a set of symmetry generators obeying the extended BMS$_4$ algebra. We analyze the shadow stress tensor Ward identities in CFT$_d$ on the Lorentzian cylinder with all operator insertions in …
We analyze the general structure of soft scalar masses emerging in superstring models involving anomalous U(1) symmetries, with the aim of characterizing more systematically the circumstances under which they can happen to be flavor universal. We consider both heterotic orbifold and intersecting brane models, possibly with several anomalous and non-anomalous spontaneously broken U(1) symmetries. The hidden sector is assumed to consist of the universal dilaton, Kahler class and complex structure moduli, which are supposed to break supersymmetry, and a minimal set of Higgs fields which compensat…
In flat space, the scattering amplitudes of certain scalar effective field theories exhibit enhanced soft limits due to the presence of hidden symmetries. In this paper, we show that this phenomenon extends to wavefunction coefficients in de Sitter space. Using a representation in terms of boundary conformal generators acting on contact diagrams, we find that imposing enhanced soft limits fixes the masses and four-point couplings (including curvature corrections) in agreement with Lagrangians recently derived from hidden symmetries. Higher-point couplings can then be fixed using a bootstrap pr…
We investigate the relation between the subleading soft graviton theorem and asymptotic symmetries in gravity in even dimensions $d=2+2m$ higher than four. After rewriting the subleading soft graviton theorem as a Ward identity, we argue that the charges of such identity generate Diff$(S^{2m})$. In order to show that, we propose suitable commutation relation among certain components of the metric fields. As a result, all Diff$(S^{2m})$ transformations are symmetries of gravitational scattering.
Motivated by the equivalence between soft graviton theorem and Ward identities for the supertranslation symmetries belonging to the BMS group, we propose a new extension (different from the so-called extended BMS) of the BMS group which is a semi-direct product of supertranslations and Diff(S^2). We propose a definition for the canonical generators associated to the smooth diffeomorphisms and show that the resulting Ward identities are equivalent to the subleading soft graviton theorem of Cachazo and Strominger.
We investigate asymptotic symmetries which preserve the Bondi gauge conditions but do not preserve the asymptotic falloff conditions for the metric near the null boundary, and their connection to soft graviton theorems for scattering amplitudes. These include generalized superrotation symmetries parameterized by a smooth vector field $Y^{A}$ obeying $D_{A}Y^{A} = 0$, for which we show that the associated conserved charge can be derived by applying the Noether procedure to the Einstein-Katz action. We also discuss the connection between asymptotic symmetries and the conserved charge associated …
Peering in from the outside, $\mathbb{A} := \mathbb{R}\otimes\mathbb{C}\otimes\mathbb{H}\otimes\mathbb{O}$ looks to be an ideal mathematical structure for particle physics. It is 32 $\mathbb{C}$-dimensional: exactly the size of one full generation of fermions. Furthermore, as alluded to earlier in arXiv:1806.00612, it supplies a richer algebraic structure, which can be used, for example, to replace SU(5) with the SU(3)$\times$SU(2)$\times$U(1) / $\mathbb{Z}_6$ symmetry of the standard model. However, this line of research has been weighted down by a difficulty known as the fermion doubling pro…
We apply the background field technique, recently developed for a general class of nonlinear symmetries, at tree level, to the Volkov-Akulov theory with spontaneously broken N=1 supersymmetry. We find that the background field expansion in terms of the free fields to the lowest order reproduces the nonlinear supersymmetry transformation rules. The double soft limit of the background field is, in agreement with the new general identities, defined by the algebra of the nonlinear symmetries.
Motivated by connections with observable phenomena, in particular with soft factorization theorems for scattering amplitudes and with memory effects, renewed interest has been recently shown in the subject of asymptotic symmetries at null infinity. The two main goals of this Ph.D. thesis are, first, to review the main aspects of the connection between such symmetries and observable effects in the context of gravity, electromagnetic and Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions and, second, to present results concerning the extension of this program to the case of spacetimes of arbitrary dimension, …
We demonstrate that the tree level amplitudes and the explicit formulas of soft factors can be uniquely determined by soft theorems and the universality of soft factors. By imposing the soft theorems and the universality, as well as the assumption of double copy, we reconstruct single trace Yang-Millsscalar amplitudes and pure Yang-Mills amplitudes, in the expanded formulas. The explicit formulas of soft factors for the bi-adjoint scalar and gluon are also determined. The expansions of Yang-Mills-scalar and Yang-Mills amplitudes can be extended to Einstein-Yang-Mills and gravitational amplitud…
Due to seminal works of Weinberg, Cachazo and Strominger we know that tree level quantum gravity amplitudes satisfy three factorization constraints. Building on previous works which relate two of these constraints to symmetries of quantum gravity at null infinity, we present rather strong evidence that the third constraint is also equivalent to a new set of symmetries of (perturbative) quantum gravity. Our analysis implies that the symmetry group of quantum gravity may be even richer than the BMS group (or infinite dimensional extension thereof) previously considered.
It is now well understood that Ward identities associated to the (extended) BMS algebra are equivalent to single soft graviton theorems. In this work, we show that if we consider nested Ward identities constructed out of two BMS charges, a class of double soft factorization theorems can be recovered. By making connections with earlier works in the literature, we argue that at the sub-leading order, these double soft graviton theorems are the so-called consecutive double soft graviton theorems. We also show how these nested Ward identities can be understood as Ward identities associated to BMS …
Recently it has been understood that certain soft factorization theorems for scattering amplitudes can be written as Ward identities of new asymptotic symmetries. This relationship has been established for soft particles with spins $s > 0$, most notably for soft gravitons and photons. Here we study the remaining case of soft scalars. We show that a class of Yukawa-type theories, where a massless scalar couples to massive particles, have an infinite number of conserved charges. This raises the question as to whether one can associate asymptotic symmetries to scalars.
In theories of phyiscs beyond the Standard Model (SM), visible sector fields often carry quantum numbers under additional gauge symmetries. One could then imagine a scenario in which these extra gauge symmetries play a role in transmitting supersymmetry breaking from a hidden sector to the Supersymmetric Standard Model (SSM). In this paper we present a general formalism for studying the resulting hidden sectors and calculating the corresponding gauge mediated soft parameters. We find that a large class of generic models features a leading universal contribution to the soft scalar masses that o…
We show that scattering amplitudes in magical, symmetric or homogeneous N=2 Maxwell-Einstein supergravities can be obtained as double copies of two gauge theories, using the framework of color/kinematics duality. The left-hand-copy is N=2 super-Yang-Mills theory coupled to a hypermultiplet, whereas the right-hand-copy is a non-supersymmetric theory that can be identified as the dimensional reduction of a D-dimensional Yang-Mills theory coupled to P fermions. For generic D and P, the double copy gives homogeneous supergravities. For P=1 and D=7,8,10,14, it gives the magical supergravities. We c…
We derive soft theorems for theories in which time symmetries -- symmetries that involve the transformation of time, an example of which are Lorentz boosts -- are spontaneously broken. The soft theorems involve unequal-time correlation functions with the insertion of a soft Goldstone in the far past. Explicit checks are provided for several examples, including the effective theory of a relativistic superfluid and the effective field theory of inflation. We discuss how in certain cases these unequal-time identities capture information at the level of observables that cannot be seen purely in te…
We consider and derive the gravitational soft theorem up to the sub-subleading power from the perspective of effective Lagrangians. The emergent soft gauge symmetries of the effective Lagrangian provide a transparent explanation of why soft graviton emission is universal to sub-subleading power, but gauge boson emission is not. They also suggest a physical interpretation of the form of the soft factors in terms of the charges related to the soft transformations and the kinematics of the multipole expansion. The derivation is done directly at Lagrangian level, resulting in an operatorial form o…
