We prove a Bernstein-type theorem for two-valued minimal graphs in the four-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbf{R}^4$. This states that two-valued functions defined on the entire $\mathbf{R}^3$, and whose graph is a minimal surface, must necessarily be linear. This is a two-valued analogue of the classical Bernstein theorem, which asserts that in dimensions up to $n+1 \leq 8$, an entire single-valued minimal graph is linear. The main contrast with the single-valued theory is the presence of a large set of singularities in the graphs of two-valued functions. Indeed two-valued minimal graphs are neither area-minimising, nor is the regularity theory of elliptic PDE directly available in this setting. We obtain structure results for the blowdown cones of two-valued minimal graphs, valid in dimension $n+1 \leq 7$, proving in particular that they are smoothly immersed away from an $(n-2)$-rectifiable set that includes its branch points. In dimension four we go further, and completely classify the possible blowdown cones using a combinatorial argument. We show that they must be a union of two three-dimensional planes: this is the key to the proof of the Bernstein theorem.
In this paper, we prove some Bernstein type results for $n$-dimensional minimal Lagrangian graphs in quaternion Euclidean space $H^n\cong R^{4n}$. In particular, we also get a new Bernstein Theorem for special Lagrangian graphs in $C^n$
Given any $n \geq 2$, we show that if $Ω\subsetneq \mathbb{R}^n$ is an open convex domain (e.g. a half-space), and $u : Ω\to \mathbb{R}$ is a solution to the minimal surface equation which agrees with a linear function on $\partial Ω$, then $u$ must itself be linear.
We derive a Bernstein type result for the special Lagrangian equation, namely, any global convex solution must be quadratic. In terms of minimal surfaces, the result says that any global minimal Lagrangian graph with convex potential must be a hyper-plane.
Let S be a C^2 H-minimal noncharacteristic hypersurface in the first Heisenberg group. We show that if S contains a graphical strip, then it is not a stable minimal surface. Moreover, we show that if S is a C^2 H-minimal noncharacteristic entire graph which is not itself a vertical plane, then S contains a graphical strip. Thus, as a corollary, we obtain an analogue of the Bernstein theorem: the only stable C^2 H-minimal noncharacteristic entire graphs are the vertical planes.
We show the regularity of, and derive a-priori estimates for (weakly) harmonic maps from a Riemannian manifold into a Euclidean sphere under the assumption that the image avoids some neighborhood of a half-equator. The proofs combine constructions of strictly convex functions and the regularity theory of quasi-linear elliptic systems. We apply these results to the spherical and Euclidean Bernstein problems for minimal hypersurfaces, obtaining new conditions under which compact minimal hypersurfaces in spheres or complete minimal hypersurfaces in Euclidean spaces are trivial.
In this paper, we consider a Generalized Bernstein Theorem for a type of generalized minimal surfaces, namely minimal Plateau surfaces. We show that if an orientable minimal Plateau surface is stable and has quadratic area growth in $\mathbb{R}^3 $, then it is flat.
Using Schauder's theory for linear elliptic partial differential equations in two independent variables and fundamental estimates for univalent mappings due to E. Heinz we establish an upper bound of the Gaussian curvature of two-dimensional minimal surface graphs in R^n. This leads us to a theorem of Bernstein-Liouville type.
Combining the tools of geometric analysis with properties of Jordan angles and angle space distributions, we derive a spherical and a Euclidean Bernstein theorem for minimal submanifolds of arbitrary dimension and codimension, under the condition that the Gauss image is contained in some geometrically defined closed region of a Grassmannian manifold. The proof depends on the subharmoncity of an auxiliary function, the Codazzi equations and geometric measure theory.
Let $M$ be an $n$-dimensional smooth oriented complete embedded minimal hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ with Euclidean volume growth. We show that if the image under the Gauss map of $M$ avoids some neighborhood of a half-equator, then $M$ must be an affine hyperplane.
We establish Bernstein Theorems for Lagrangian graphs which are Hamiltonian minimal or have conformal Maslov form. Some known results of minimal (Lagrangian) submanifolds are generalized.
Let Σbe a complete minimal Lagrangian submanifold of \C^n. We identify regions in the Grassmannian of Lagrangian subspaces so that whenever the image of the Gauss map of Σlies in one of these regions, then Σis an affine space.
A celebrated result of S. Bernstein states that every solution of the minimal surface equation over the entire plane has to be an affine linear function. Since the paper of Bernstein appeared in 1927, many different proofs and generalizations of this beautiful theorem were given, namely to higher dimensions and to more general equations, for a careful account we refer to the paper by Simo and to the monograph by Dierkes-Hildebrandt-Tromba. In his paper Simon posed the question whether the equation \begin{equation} (1+{u_x}^2)u_{xx}+2u_x u_y u_{xy}+ (1+{u_y}^2)u_{yy} = 0 \label{toll} \end{equat…
We consider minimal maps $f:M\to N$ between Riemannian manifolds $(M,\mathrm{g}_M)$ and $(N,\mathrm{g}_N)$, where $M$ is compact and where the sectional curvatures satisfy $\sec_N\le σ\le \sec_M$ for some $σ>0$. Under certain assumptions on the differential of the map and the second fundamental form of the graph $Γ(f)$ of $f$, we show that $f$ is either the constant map or a totally geodesic isometric immersion.
We classify the entire minimal vertical graphs in the 3 dimensional Heisenberg group Nil endowed with a Riemannian left-invariant metric. This classification, which provides a solution to the Bernstein problem in Nil, is given in terms of the Abresch-Rosenberg holomorphic differential for minimal surfaces in Nil.
We establish the following theorem of Bernstein type for the first Heisenberg group: Let S be a C^2 connected H-minimal surface which is a graph over some plane P, then S is either a non-characteristic vertical plane, or its generalized seed curve satisfies a type of constant curvature condition.
Let Σbe a minimal submanifold of \R^{n+m} that can be represented as the graph of a smooth map f:\R^n-->\R^m. We apply a formula we derived in the study of mean curvature flow to obtain conditions under which Σmust be an affine subspace. Our result covers all known ones in the general case. The conditions are stated in terms of the singular values of $df$.
A result of B.Solomon (On the Gauss map of an area-minimizing hypersurface. 1984. Journal of Differential Geometry, 19(1), 221-232.) says that a compact minimal hypersurface $M^k$ of the sphere $S^{k+1}$ with $H^1(M)=0$, whose Gauss map omits a neighborhood of an $S^{k-1}$ equator, is totally geodesic in $S^{k+1}$. We develop a new proof strategy which can also obtain an analogous result for codimension 2 compact minimal submanifolds of $S^{k+1}$.
For entire spacelike stationary 2-dimensional graphs in Minkowski spaces, we establish Bernstein type theorems under specific boundedness assumptions either on the W-function or on the total (Gaussian) curvature. These conclusions imply the classical Bernstein theorem for minimal surfaces in 3-dimensional Euclidean space and Calabi's theorem for spacelike maximal surfaces in 3-dimensional Minkowski space.
Moser's Bernstein theorem \cite{moser61} says that an entire minimal graph of codimension 1 with bounded slope must be a hyperplane. An analogous result for arbitrary codimension is not true, by an example of Lawson-Osserman. Here, we show that Moser's theorem nevertheless extends to codimension 2, i.e., a minimal $p$-submanifold in $R^{p+2}$, which is the graph of a smooth function defined on the entire $R^p$ with bounded slope, must be a $p$-plane. Our method depends on convexity properties of Grassmannians which come into play as the targets of the (harmonic) Gauss maps of our minimal subma…
In this short note we study Bernstein's type theorem of translating solitons whose images of their Gauss maps are contained in compact subsets in an open hemisphere of the standard $\mathbf{S}^n$ (see Theorem 1.1). As a special case we get a classical Bernstein's type theorem in minimal submanifolds in $\mathbf{R}^{n+1}$ (see Corollary 1.2).
We study the problem of finding a minimal graph with prescribed boundary data in arbitrary dimension and codimension. Existence, uniqueness, stability and regularity are treated. We first present the well-known results for codimension one: Jenkins-Serrin's existence theorem, convexity properties of the area which give uniqueness and stability and De Giorgi's theorem for regularity. In higher codimension we first discuss the counterexamples of Lawson and Osserman. Then we present the recent results of Mu-Tao Wang: we use the mean curvature flow to show existence for small boundary data and we p…
Under suitable conditions on the range of the Gauss map of a complete submanifold of Euclidean space with parallel mean curvature, we construct a strongly subharmonic function and derive a-priori estimates for the harmonic Gauss map. The required conditions here are more general than in previous work and they therefore enable us to improve substantially previous results for the Lawson-Osseman problem concerning the regularity of minimal submanifolds in higher codimension and to derive Bernstein type results.
Calabi's Bernstein-type theorem asserts that a zero mean curvature entire graph in Lorentz-Minkowski space $\boldsymbol L^3$ which admits only space-like points is a space-like plane. Using the fluid mechanical duality between minimal surfaces in Euclidean 3-space $\boldsymbol E^3$ and maximal surfaces in Lorentz-Minkowski space $\boldsymbol L^3$, we give an improvement of this Bernstein-type theorem. More precisely, we show that a zero mean curvature entire graph in $\boldsymbol L^3$ which does not admit time-like points (namely, a graph consists of only space-like and light-like points) is a…
This paper is the second in a series where we attempt to give a complete description of the space of all embedded minimal surfaces of fixed genus in a fixed (but arbitrary) closed 3-manifold. The key for understanding such surfaces is to understand the local structure in a ball and in particular the structure of an embedded minimal disk in a ball in $\RR^3$. We show here that if the curvature of such a disk becomes large at some point, then it contains an almost flat multi-valued graph nearby that continues almost all the way to the boundary.
In this paper we study an extension of the Bernstein Theorem for minimal spacelike surfaces of the four dimensional Minkowski vector space form and we obtain the class of those surfaces which are also graphics and have non-zero Gauss curvature. That is the class of entire solutions of a system of two elliptic non-linear equations that is an extension of the equation of minimal graphic of $\mathbb R^3$. Therefore, we prove that the so-called Bernstein property does not hold in general for the case of graphic spacelike surfaces in $\mathbb R^4_1$. In addition, we also obtain explicitly the conju…
We obtain a Bernstein type result for entire two dimensional minimal graphs in $\mathbb{R}^{4}$, which extends a previous one due to L. Ni. Moreover, we provide a characterization for complex analytic curves.
We explore a connection between the Finslerian area functional and well-investigated Cartan functionals to prove new Bernstein theorems, uniqueness and removability results for Finsler-minimal graphs, as well as enclosure theorems and isoperimetric inequalities for minimal immersions in Finsler spaces. In addition, we establish the existence of smooth Finsler-minimal immersions spanning given extreme or graphlike boundary contours.
We prove some epsilon regularity results for n-dimensional minimal two-valued Lipschitz graphs. The main theorems imply uniqueness of tangent cones and regularity of the singular set in a neighbourhood of any point at which at least one tangent cone is equal to a pair of transversely intersecting multiplicity one n-dimensional planes, and in a neighbourhood of any point at which at which at least one tangent cone is equal to a union of four distinct multiplicity one n-dimensional half-planes that meet along an (n-1) - dimensional axis. The key ingredient is a new Excess Improvement Lemma obtai…
We study the spectrum of the Laplace operator of a complete minimal properly immersed hypersurface $M$ in $\R^{n+1}$. (1) Under a volume growth condition on extrinsic balls and a condition on the unit normal at infinity, we prove that $M$ has only essential spectrum consisting of the half line $[0, +\infty)$. This is the case when $\lim_{\tilde{r}\to +\infty}\tilde{r}κ_i=0$, where $\tilde{r}$ is the extrinsic distance to a point of $M$ and $κ_i$ are the principal curvatures. (2) If the $κ_i$ satisfy the decay conditions $|κ_i|\leq 1/\tilde{r}$, and strict inequality is achieved at some point $…
We obtain new curvature estimates and Bernstein type results for minimal $n-$submanifolds in $\ir{n+m},\, m\ge 2$ under the condition that the rank of its Gauss map is at most 2. In particular, this applies to minimal surfaces in Euclidean spaces of arbitrary codimension.
We extend the well-known Denjoy-Ahlfors theorem on the number of different asymptotic tracts of holomorphic functions to subharmonic functions on arbitrary Riemannian manifolds. We obtain some new versions of the Liouville theorem for $\p$-harmonic functions without requiring the geodesic completeness requirement of a manifold. Moreover, an upper estimate of the topological index of the height function on a minimal surface in $\R{n}$ has been established and, as a consequence, a new proof of Bernstein's theorem on entire solutions has been derived. Other applications to minimal surfaces are al…
Based on works by Hopf, Weinberger, Hamilton and Evans, we state and prove the strong elliptic maximum principle for smooth sections in vector bundles over Riemannian manifolds and give some applications in Differential Geometry. Moreover, we use this maximum principle to obtain various rigidity theorems and Bernstein type theorems in higher codimension for minimal maps between Riemannian manifolds.
Using the stress energy tensor, we establish some monotonicity formulae for vector bundle-valued p-forms satisfying the conservation law, provided that the base Riemannian (resp. Kähler) manifolds poss some real (resp. complex) p-exhaustion functions. Vanishing theorems follow immediately from the monotonicity formulae under suitable growth conditions on the energy of the p-forms. As an application, we establish a monotonicity formula for the Ricci form of a Kähler manifold of constant scalar curvature and then get a growth condition to derive the Ricci flatness of the Kähler manifold. In part…
Inspired by the Finn-Osserman (1964), Chern (1969), do Carmo-Peng (1979) proofs of the Bernstein theorem, which characterizes flat planes as the only entire minimal graphs, we prove a new rigidity theorem for associate families connecting the doubly periodic Scherk graphs and the singly periodic Scherk towers. Our characterization of Scherk's surfaces discovers a new idea from the original Finn-Osserman curvature estimate. Combining two generically independent flat structures introduced by Chern and Ricci, we shall construct geometric harmonic functions on minimal surfaces, and establish that …
Compact minimal submanifolds of the Riemannian symmetric spaces $SU(n)/SO(n)$, $Sp(n)/U(n)$, $SO(2n)/U(n)$, $SU(2n)/Sp(n)$ via complex-valued eigenfunctions
It is well-known that a minimal graph of codimension one is stable, i.e. the second variation of the area functional is non-negative. This is no longer true for higher codimensional minimal graphs. In this note, we prove that a minimal graph of any codimension is stable if its normal bundle is flat. We also prove minimal graphs of dimension no greater than six and any codimension is flat if the the normal bundle is flat and the density at infinity is finite. Such a Bernstein type theorem holds in any dimension if we assume additionally growth conditions on the volume element.
We define holomorphic quadratic differentials for spacelike surfaces with constant mean curvature in the Lorentzian homogeneous spaces $\mathbb{L}(κ,τ)$ with isometry group of dimension 4, which are dual to the Abresch-Rosenberg differentials in the Riemannian counterparts $\mathbb{E}(κ,τ)$, and obtain some consequences. On the one hand, we give a very short proof of the Bernstein problem in Heisenberg space, and provide a geometric description of the family of entire graphs sharing the same differential in terms of a 2-parameter conformal deformation. On the other hand, we prove that entire m…
