We study closed orientable manifolds whose topological complexity is at most 3 and determine their cohomology rings. For some of admissible cohomology rings we are also able to identify corresponding manifolds up to homeomorphism.
We show the non existence of manifold structure on certain topological constructions. The main results of this paper are: (1) The wedge of manifold with itself is not a manifold. (2) The cone of a manifold is not a manifold. The main tools for the main result is homological algebra and algebraic topology.
Quasitoric manifolds are manifolds that admit an action of the torus that is locally as the standard action of T^n on C^n. It is known that the quotients of such actions are nice manifolds with corners. We prove that such manifolds are equivariantly rigid i.e., that any other manifold that is T^n-homotopy equivalent to a quasitoric manifold, is T^n-homeomorphic to it.
Quoric manifolds are the quaternionic analogue of toric manifolds. They admit a locally nice action of $(S^3)^n$ and the quotient is a manifold with corners. We show that they satisfy equivariant rigidity. More precisely, any locally linear $(S^3)^n$-manifold that it is equivariantly homotopic equivalent to a quoric manifold is equivariantly homeomorphic to it. The proof is given by generalising the methods of used in Coxeter and toric manifolds.
A quasitoric manifold is a $2n$-dimensional compact smooth manifold with a locally standard action of an $n$-dimensional torus whose orbit space is a simple polytope. In this article, we classify quasitoric manifolds with the second Betti number $β_2=2$ topologically. Interestingly, they are distinguished by their cohomology rings up to homeomorphism.
A classical theorem of H. Hopf asserts that a closed connected smooth manifold admits a nowhere vanishing vector field if and only if its Euler characteristic is zero. R. Brown generalized Hopf's result to topological manifolds, replacing vector fields with path fields. In this note, we give an equivariant analog of Brown's theorem for locally smooth $G$-manifolds where $G$ is a finite group.

A toric manifold is a compact non-singular toric variety equipped with a natural half-dimensional compact torus action. A torus manifold is an oriented, closed, smooth manifold of dimension $2n$ with an effective action of a compact torus $T^{n}$ having a non-empty fixed point set. Hence, a torus manifold can be thought of as a generalization of a toric manifold. In the present paper, we focus on a certain class $\mM$ in the family of torus manifolds with codimension one extended actions, and we give a topological classification of $\mM$. As a result, their topological types are completely det…
The Topological Period-Index Conjecture is an hypothesis which relates the period and index of elements of the cohomological Brauer group of a space. It was identified by Antieau and Williams as a topological analogue of the Period-Index Conjecture for function fields. In this paper we show that the Topological Period-Index Conjecture holds and is in general sharp for spin$^c$ 6-manifolds. We also show that it fails in general for 6-manifolds.
In this paper, we examine the relations of two closely related concepts, the digital Lusternik-Schnirelmann category and the digital higher topological complexity, with each other in digital images. For some certain digital images, we introduce $κ-$topological groups in the digital topological manner for having stronger ideas about the digital higher topological complexity. Our aim is to improve the understanding of the digital higher topological complexity. We present examples and counterexamples for $κ-$topological groups.
We prove an upper bound of higher topological complexity $TC_n(X)$ using higher $\mathcal{D}$-topological complexity $TC_n^{\mathcal{D}}(X)$ of a space $X$. An intermediate invariant $\widetilde{TC}_n(X)$ is used in the proof. We interpret this invariant $\widetilde{TC}_n(X)$ as higher analogue of strongly equivariant topological complexity of the universal cover of $\widetilde{X}$ with the action of the fundamental group of $X$.
We compute the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category and the topological complexity of no $k$-equal manifolds $M^{(k)}_d(n)$ for certain values of $d$, $k$ and $n$. This includes instances where $M^{(k)}_d(n)$ is known to be rationally non-formal. The key ingredient in our computations is the knowledge of the cohomology ring $H^*(M^{(k)}_d(n))$ as described by Dobrinskaya and Turchin. A fine tuning comes from the use of obstruction theory techniques.
We compute the higher topological complexity of ordered configuration spaces of orientable surfaces, thus extending Cohen-Farber's description of the ordinary topological complexity of those spaces.
In this study, we improve the topological complexity computations on digital images with introducing the digital topological complexity computations of a surjective and digitally continuous map between digital images. We also reveal differences in topological complexity computations of maps between digital images and topological spaces. Moreover, we emphasize the importance of the adjacency relation on the domain and the range of a digital map in these computations.
We use an alternative definition of topological complexity to show that the topological complexity of the mapping telescope of a sequence $X_1\rightarrow X_2\rightarrow X_3\rightarrow...$ is bounded above by $2max{TC(X_i); i=1,2,...}$.
We first study the higher version of the relative topological complexity by using the homotopic distance. We also introduced the generalized version of the relative topological complexity of a topological pair on both the Schwarz genus and the homotopic distance. With these concepts, we give some inequalities including the topological complexity and the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category, the most important parts of the study of robot motion planning in topology. Finally, by defining the parametrised topological complexity via the homotopic distance, we present some estimates on the higher settin…
We give an upper bound on the topological complexity of varieties $\mathcal{V}$ obtained as complements in $\mathbb{C}^m$ of the zero locus of a polynomial. As an application, we determine the topological complexity of unordered configuration spaces of the plane.
This paper explores topological complexity in the finite equivariant setting. We first define and study an equivariant version of Tanaka's combinatorial complexity for finite topological spaces. We explore the relationships between this invariant and several others already discussed in the literature: Farber's topological complexity, Tanaka's combinatorial complexity, and Colman-Grant's equivariant Lusternik-Schnirelmann category. We find bounds for equivariant combinatorial complexity and for the necessary lengths of equivariant combinatorial motion plannings. We show that the equivariant top…
We prove that a space whose topological complexity equals 1 is homotopy equivalent to some odd-dimensional sphere. We prove a similar result, although not in complete generality, for spaces X whose higher topological complexity TC_n(X) is as low as possible, namely n-1.
We establish some upper and lower bounds of the rational topological complexity for certain classes of elliptic spaces. Our techniques permit us in particular to show that the rational topological complexity coincides with the dimension of the rational homotopy for some special families of coformal elliptic spaces.
We establish upper bounds of the indices of topological Brauer classes over a closed orientable 8-manifolds. In particular, we verify the Topological Period-Index Conjecture (TPIC) for topological Brauer classes over closed orientable 8-manifolds of order not congruent to 2 mod 4. In addition, we provide a counter-example which shows that the TPIC fails in general for closed orientable 8-manifolds.
This is a survey paper where we expose the Kirby--Siebenmann results on classification of PL structures on topological manifolds and, in particular, the homotopy equivalence TOP/PL=K(Z/2.3) and the Hauptvermutung for manifolds.
We introduce the notion of a topological toric manifold and a topological fan and show that there is a bijection between omnioriented topological toric manifolds and complete non-singular topological fans. A topological toric manifold is a topological analogue of a toric manifold and the family of topological toric manifolds is much larger than that of toric manifolds. A topological fan is a combinatorial object generalizing the notion of a simplicial fan in toric geometry. Prior to this paper, two topological analogues of a toric manifold have been introduced. One is a quasitoric manifold and…
The results of the paper concern the topological structure of complete riemannian manifolds with cyclic holonomy groups and low-dimensional orientable complete flat manifolds. We also discuss related results such as the affine classification of orientable complete flat 4-manifolds, an algebraic criterion of an affine equivalence, the relationship between holonomy homomorphisms and some algebraic and geometric invariants.
We prove that the topological complexity of every symplectically atoroidal manifold is equal to twice its dimension. This is the analogue for topological complexity of a result of Rudyak and Oprea, who showed that the Lusternik--Schnirelmann category of a symplectically aspherical manifold equals its dimension. Symplectically hyperbolic manifolds are symplectically atoroidal, as are symplectically aspherical manifolds whose fundamental group does not contain free abelian subgroups of rank two. Thus we obtain many new calculations of topological complexity, including iterated surface bundles an…
Manifolds admitting positive sectional curvature are conjectured to have rigid homotopical structure and, in particular, comparatively small Euler charateristics. In this article, we obtain upper bounds for the Euler characteristic of a positively curved Riemannian manifold that admits a large isometric torus action. We apply our results to prove obstructions to symmetric spaces, products of manifolds, and connected sums admitting positively curved metrics with symmetry.
We find conditions which ensure that the topological complexity of a closed manifold $M$ with abelian fundamental group is nonmaximal, and see through examples that our conditions are sharp. This generalizes results of Costa and Farber on the topological complexity of spaces with small fundamental group. Relaxing the commutativity condition on the fundamental group, we also generalize results of Dranishnikov on the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category of the cofibre of the diagonal map $Δ: M \to M \times M$ for nonorientable surfaces by establishing the nonmaximality of this invariant for a large c…
The Lusternik-Schnirelmann category and topological complexity are important invariants of manifolds (and more generally, topological spaces). We study the behavior of these invariants under the operation of taking the connected sum of manifolds. We give a complete answer for the LS-categoryof orientable manifolds, $\cat(M\# N)=\max\{\cat M,\cat N\}$. For topological complexity we prove the inequality $\TC (M\# N)\ge\max\{\TC M,\TC N\}$ for simply connected manifolds.
We show that any topological toric manifold can be covered by finitely many open charts so that all the transition functions between these charts are Laurent monomials of $z_j$'s and $\bar{z}_j$'s. In addition, we will describe toric manifolds and some special class of topological toric manifolds in terms of transition functions of charts up to (weakly) equivariant diffeomorphism.
We classify closed, topological spin$^+$ 4-manifolds with fundamental group $π$ of cohomological dimension $\leq 3$ (up to s-cobordism), after stabilization by connected sum with at most $b_3(π)$ copies of $S^2\times S^2$. In general we must also assume that $π$ also satisfies certain K-theory and assembly map conditions. Examples for which these conditions hold include the torsion-free fundamental groups of 3-manifolds and all right-angled Artin groups whose defining graphs have no 4-cliques.
We give a new proof of an index theorem for fiber bundles of compact topological manifolds due to Dwyer, Weiss, and Williams, which asserts that the parametrized $A$-theory characteristic of such a fiber bundle factors canonically through the assembly map of $A$-theory. Furthermore our main result shows a refinement of this statement by providing such a factorization for an extended $A$-theory characteristic, defined on the parametrized topological cobordism category. The proof uses a convenient framework for bivariant theories and recent results of Gomez-Lopez and Kupers on the homotopy type …
This paper presents a combinatorial analog of topological complexity for finite spaces. We demonstrate that this coincides with the genuine topological complexity of the original finite space, and constitutes an upper bound for the topological complexity of its order complex.
We show that the parametrised topological complexity of Cohen, Farber and Weinberger gives an invariant of group epimorphisms. We extend various bounds for the topological complexity of groups to obtain bounds for the parametrised topological complexity of epimorphisms. Several applications are given, including an alternative computation of the parametrised topological complexity of the planar Fadell--Neuwirth fibrations which avoids calculations involving cup products. We also prove a homotopy invariance result for parametrised topological complexity of fibrations over different bases.
We prove Farber's conjecture on the stable topological complexity of configuration spaces of graphs. The conjecture follows from a general lower bound derived from recent insights into the topological complexity of aspherical spaces. Our arguments apply equally to higher topological complexity.
Closed oriented 4-manifolds with the same geometrically 2-dimensional fundamental group (satisfying certain properties) are classified up to $s$-cobordism by their $w_2$-type, equivariant intersection form and the Kirby-Siebenmann invariant. As an application, we obtain a complete homeomorphism classification of closed oriented 4-manifolds with solvable Baumslag-Solitar fundamental groups, including a precise realization result.
Any manifold with boundary gives rise to a Poincare duality algebra in a natural way. Given a simplicial poset $S$ whose geometric realization is a closed orientable homology manifold, and a characteristic function, we construct a manifold with boundary such that graded components of its Poincare duality algebra have dimensions $h_k"(S)$. This gives a clear topological evidence for two well-known facts about simplicial manifolds: the nonnegativity of $h"$-numbers (Novik--Swartz theorem) and the symmetry $h"_k=h"_{n-k}$ (generalized Dehn--Sommerville relations).
We consider hyperbolic manifolds with boundary, which admit an ideal triangulation with n ideal triangles and one edge. We prove that the number of these manifolds is $\exp(n\ln(n)+O(n))$.
We provide an upper bound on the topological complexity of twisted products. We use it to give an estimate $$TC(X)\le TC(π_1(X))+\dim X$$ of the topological complexity of a space in terms of its dimension and the complexity of its fundamental group.
We build a connection between topology of smooth 4-manifolds and the theory of topological modular forms by considering topologically twisted compactification of 6d (1,0) theories on 4-manifolds with flavor symmetry backgrounds. The effective 2d theory has (0,1) supersymmetry and, possibly, a residual flavor symmetry. The equivariant topological Witten genus of this 2d theory then produces a new invariant of the 4-manifold equipped with a principle bundle, valued in the ring of equivariant weakly holomorphic (topological) modular forms. We describe basic properties of this map and present a fe…
The well-known Kähler identities naturally extend to the non-integrable setting. This paper deduces several geometric and topological consequences of these extended identities for compact almost Kähler manifolds. Among these are identities of various Laplacians, generalized Hodge and Serre dualities, a generalized hard Lefschetz duality, and a Lefschetz decomposition, all on the space of $d$-harmonic forms of pure bidegree. There is also a generalization of Hodge Index Theorem for compact almost Kähler $4$-manifolds. In particular, these provide topological bounds on the dimension of the space…
We determine topological complexity of a series of finite spaces which is weakly homotopy equivalent to a circle $S^1$, and give a finite space $X$ satisfying the inequality tc$(X) <$ cat$(X {\times} X)$. This answers two conjectures on topological complexity for finite spaces raised by K. Tanaka in 2018.
