Recently, a novel equation of state (EoS) parameter for dark energy has been introduced which deals with a special mathematical function, known as the Lambert$W$ function. In this paper, we study the effect on the growth of perturbations for the Lambert$W$ dark energy model. We perform the analysis for two different approaches. In the first case we consider the universe to be filled with two different fluid components, namely, the baryonic matter component and the Lambert$W$ dark energy component, while in the second case we consider that there is a single fluid component in the universe whose equation of state parameter is described by the Lambert$W$ function. We then compare the growth rates of Lambert$W$ model with that for a standard $Λ$CDM model as well as the CPL model. Our results indicate that the presence of Lambert$W$ dynamical dark energy sector changes the growth rate and affects the matter fluctuations in the universe to a great extent.
The growth of matter perturbations in the $f(R)$ model proposed by Starobinsky is studied in this paper. Three different parametric forms of the growth index are considered respectively and constraints on the model are obtained at both the $1σ$ and $2σ$ confidence levels, by using the current observational data for the growth factor. It is found, for all the three parametric forms of the growth index examined, that the Starobinsky model is consistent with the observations only at the $2σ$ confidence level.
The density perturbation of the universe has been considered in the framework of a Finslerian cosmological model in which the background spacetime of the universe is taken as the spatially flat FLRW spacetime with a Finslerian perturbation. The inhomogeneity in the matter(energy) density arises naturally in this consideration of gravity in the $( α, β)$ - Finsler space for the background spacetime of the universe. The resulting inhomogeneous matter density indicates matter perturbation departing from the uniform density, and it is caused by the Finslerian perturbation in the Riemannian spaceti…
We disclose the effects of the entropic corrections to the Friedmann equations on the growth of perturbations in the early stages of the universe. We consider two types of corrections to the area law of entropy, known as Tsallis and Barrow entropies. Using these corrections to entropy, we derive the modified Friedmann equations and explore the growth of perturbations in a flat universe filled with dark matter (DM) and cosmological constant. We employ the spherically symmetric collapse formalism and work in the linear regime for the perturbations. Interestingly enough, we find out that the prof…
In this paper, we study the growth index of matter density perturbations for the power law model in $f(T)$ gravity. Using the parametrization $γ(z)=γ_0+γ_1 {z\over 1+z}$ for the growth index, which approximates the real evolution of $γ(z)$ very well, and the observational data of the growth factor, we find that, at $1σ$ confidence level, the power law model in $f(T)$ gravity is consistent with the observations, since the obtained theoretical values of $γ_0$ and $γ_1$ are in the allowed region.
Recently, a novel Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in four dimensions has been introduced [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124 (2020) 081301]. We will investigate cosmological consequences of this model in details. We will consider linear matter density perturbations and also estimate relevant modified gravity parameters. Specially we will concentrate on the growth rate of non-relativistic matter perturbations on top of FRW geometry and show that for a narrow range of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant, observational data will be satisfied. In this paper, it is shown that for enough large values of the coupling…
Two different realistic $F(R)$ modified gravity models are considered in the framework of the Friedmann-Lemetre-Robertson-Walker universe. The parameters of these two models are adjusted to reach coherence with the most recent and accurate observations of the current universe. A study of the growth of matter density perturbations is done, and several parametrizations of the growth index are developed for both models. The ansatz for the growth index given by $γ= γ_0 + γ_1 z/(1+z)$ seems to be the best parametrization for the two models considered. Finally, the values obtained for $γ_0$ and $γ_1…
We study the linear growth of matter perturbations in the DGP model with the growth index $γ$ as a function of redshift. At the linear approximation: $γ(z)\approxγ_0+γ_0^\prime z $, we find that, for $0.2\leqΩ_{m,0}\leq0.35$, $γ_0$ takes the value from 0.658 to 0.671, and $γ_0^\prime$ ranges from 0.035 to 0.042. With three low redshift observational data of the growth factor, we obtain the observational constraints on $γ_0$ and $γ_0'$ for the $ΛCDM$ and DGP models and find that the observations favor the $ΛCDM$ model but at the $1σ$ confidence level both the $ΛCDM$ and DGP models are consisten…
We propose a parametrization for the growth index of the linear matter perturbations, $γ(z)=γ_0+\frac{z}{1+z}γ_1$. The growth factor of the perturbations parameterized as $Ω_m^γ$ is analyzed for both the $w$CDM model and the DGP model with our proposed form for $γ$. We find that $γ_1$ is negative for the $w$CDM model but is positive for the DGP model. Thus it provides another signature to discriminate them. We demonstrate that $Ω_m^γ$ with $γ$ taking our proposed form approximates the growth factor very well both at low and high redshfits for both kinds of models. In fact, the error is below 0…
The covariant generalizations of the background dark sector coupling suggested in G. Mangano, G. Miele and V. Pettorino, Mod. Phys. Lett. A 18, 831 (2003) are considered. The evolution of perturbations is studied with detailed attention to interaction rate that is proportional to the product of dark matter and dark energy densities. It is shown that some classes of models with coupling of this type do not suffer from early time instabilities in strong coupling regime.
We study the amplification of the curvature perturbations due to a small sound speed and find that its origin is different completely from that due to the ultraslow-roll inflation. This is because when the sound speed is very small the enhancement of the power spectrum comes from the fact that the curvature perturbations at the scales smaller than the cosmic microwave background (CMB) scale becomes scale-variant, rather than growing that leads to the amplification of the curvature perturbations during the ultraslow-roll inflation. At large scales the power spectrum of the curvature perturbatio…
In this paper we examine the validity of the linear perturbation theory near a bounce in the covariant analysis. Some linearity parameters are defined to set up conditions for a linear theory. Linear evolution of density perturbation and gravitational waves have been computed previously. We have calculated the vector and scalar induced parts of the shear tensor. For radiationlike and dustlike single fluid dominated collapsing Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker background it is shown that the linearity conditions are not satisfied near a bounce.
We extensively study the evolution and distinct signatures of cosmological models, in which dark energy interacts directly with dark matter. We first focus on the imprints of these coupled models on the cosmic microwave background temperature power spectrum, in which we discuss the multipole peak separation together with the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect. We also address the growth of matter perturbations, and disentangle the interacting dark energy models using the expansion history together with the growth history. We find that a disformal coupling between dark matter and dark energy induces…
We study the cosmological perturbations in teleparallel dark energy models in which there is a dynamical scalar field with a non-minimal coupling to gravity. We find that the propagating degrees of freedom are the same as in quintessence cosmology despite that variables of the perturbed vierbein field are greater than those in metric theories. We numerically show some evident discrepancy from general relativity in the evolutions of the perturbations on all scales of the universe. We also demonstrate that the gravitational interactions are enhanced during the unique tracker evolutions in these …
We consider asymptotically stable scalar-tensor dark energy (DE) models for which the equation of state parameter $w_{DE}$ tends to zero in the past. The viable models are of the phantom type today, however this phantomness is milder than in General Relativity if we take into account the varying gravitational constant when dealing with the SNIa data. We study further the growth of matter perturbations and we find a scaling behaviour on large redshifts which could provide an important constraint. In particular the growth of matter perturbations on large redshifts in our scalar-tensor models is …
In this manuscript, we studied the accelerated expansion history of the universe and the formations of large-scale structures using $f(Q)$ gravity model. The expansion rate of the universe within distance modulus and redshift has been performed in $f(Q)$ gravity. This work is also devoted to investigating the linear cosmological perturbations in the $f(Q)$ gravity model using the $1 + 3$ covariant formalism. The scalar and harmonic decomposition techniques are applied to find the evolution equation. The growth of matter density contrasts is analyzed with redshift $z$. Using the nonmetricity mo…
We derive an analytical expression for the growth rate of matter density perturbations on the phantom brane (which is the normal branch of the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati model). This model is characterized by a phantomlike effective equation of state for dark energy at the present epoch. It agrees very well with observations. We demonstrate that the traditional parametrization $f=Ω_m^γ$ with a quasiconstant growth index $γ$ is not successful in this case. Based on a power series expansion at large redshifts, we propose a different parametrization for this model: $f=Ω_m^γ\left(1+\frac{b}{\ell H}\r…
Rastall gravity theory shows notable features consistent with physical observations in comparison to the standard Einstein theory. Recently, there has been a debate about the equivalence of Rastall gravity and general relativity. Motivated by this open issue, in the present work, we attempt to shed some light on this debate by analyzing the evolution of the Rastall based cosmological model at the background as well as perturbation level. Employing the dynamical system techniques, we found that at late times, the dynamics of the model resembles the $Λ$CDM model at the background level irrespect…
We have put forward a new unified framework which provides a consistent and rather complete account of the growth index of matter perturbations in the regime where the dark energy is allowed to have clustering. In particular, we find that the growth index is not only affected by the cosmological parameters but rather it depends on the choice of the considered dark energy (homogeneous or clustered). Using the {\em Planck} priors and performing a standard $χ^2$-minimization between theoretical expectations and growth data, we statistically quantify the ability of the growth index to represent th…
We study background dynamics and the growth of matter perturbations in the extended quasidilaton setup of massive gravity. For the analysis of perturbations, we first choose a scalar field matter component and obtain the conditions under which all scalar perturbations are stable. We work in unitary gauge for the matter field, which allows us to directly map to known results in the limit of general relativity. By performing a parameter search, we find that the perturbations are unstable in general, while a particular choice of potential, where the scalar field effectively behaves like pressurel…
We consider the linear growth of matter perturbations on low redshifts in modified gravity Dark Energy (DE) models where G_eff(z,k) is explicitly scale-dependent. Dispersion in the growth today will only appear for scales of the order the critical scale ~ λ_{c,0}, the range of the fifth-force today. We generalize the constraint equation satisfied by the parameters γ_0(k) and γ'_0(k) \equiv \frac{dγ(z,k)}{dz}(z=0) to models with G_{eff,0}(k) \ne G. Measurement of γ_0(k) and γ'_0(k) on several scales can provide information about λ_{c,0}. In the absence of dispersion when λ_{c,0} is large compar…
We apply the Statefinder hierarchy and the growth rate of matter perturbations to discriminate modified Chaplygin gas (MCG), generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG), superfluid Chaplygin gas (SCG), purely kinetic k-essence (PKK), and $Λ$CDM model. We plot the evolutional trajectories of these models in the statefinder plane and in the composite diagnostic plane. We find that GCG, MCG, SCG, PKK, and $Λ$CDM can be distinguished well from each other at the present epoch by using the composite diagnostic $\{ε(z), S^{(1)}_{5}\}$. Using other combinations, such as $\{S^{(1)}_{3}, S^{(1)}_4\}$, $\{S^{(1)}_{3…
The Lambda-Cold Dark Matter (LCDM) model agrees with most of the cosmological observations, but has some hindrances from observed data at smaller scales such as galaxies. Recently, Berezhiani and Khoury (2015) proposed a new theory involving interacting superfluid dark matter with three model parameters, which explains galactic dynamics with great accuracy. In the present work, we study the cosmological behaviour of this model in the linear regime of cosmological perturbations. In particular, we compute both analytically and numerically the matter linear growth factor and obtain new bounds for…
We consider the linear growth of matter perturbations in various dark energy (DE) models. We show the existence of a constraint valid at $z=0$ between the background and dark energy parameters and the matter perturbations growth parameters. For $Λ$CDM $γ'_0\equiv \frac{dγ}{dz}_0$ lies in a very narrow interval $-0.0195 \le γ'_0 \le -0.0157$ for $0.2 \le Ω_{m,0}\le 0.35$. Models with a constant equation of state inside General Relativity (GR) are characterized by a quasi-constant $γ'_0$, for $Ω_{m,0}=0.3$ for example we have $γ'_0\approx -0.02$ while $γ_0$ can have a nonnegligible variation. A …
We present a general formalism to study the growth of dark matter perturbations when dark energy perturbations and interactions between dark sectors are present. We show that dynamical stability of the growth of structure depends on the type of coupling between dark sectors. By taking the appropriate coupling to ensure the stable growth of structure, we observe that the effect of the dark sectors' interaction overwhelms that of dark energy perturbation on the growth function of dark matter perturbation. Due to the influence of the interaction, the growth index can differ from the value without…
We study the growth of superhorizon modes in the curvature perturbation during an ultra-slow-roll or a large-$η$ phase in single-field inflation. In a simple toy model, we derive the two-point correlation function of the curvature perturbation and show that the requirement for causality restricts the growth rate and hence puts a lower limit on the value of $η$. The toy model is then realized by considering an inflation potential with an inflection point. Our study is useful to assessing the growth of the curvature perturbation that seeds the formation of primordial black holes.
We study the growth of linear matter density perturbations in a modified gravity approach of scalar field couplings with metric and torsion. In the equivalent scalar-tensor formulation, the matter fields in the Einstein frame interact as usual with an effective dark energy component, whose dynamics is presumably governed by a scalar field that sources a torsion mode. As a consequence, the matter density ceases to be self-conserved, thereby making an impact not only on the background cosmological evolution but also on the perturbative spectrum of the local inhomogeneities. In order to estimate …
We re-analyze the nonlocal gravity model of Deser and Woodard which was proposed to account for the current phase of cosmic acceleration. We show that the growth of perturbations predicted by this nonlocal gravity model when its background evolution is fixed by some particular non-$Λ$CDM models can be substantially lower than when its background is fixed by $Λ$CDM. This can be seen when we consider the background expansion by a dark energy model with a slightly less negative equation of state with respect to cosmological constant. Our results hints towards a fact that the choice of the backgro…
We place tight constraints on the growth index $γ$ by using the recent growth history results of 2dFGRS, SDSS-LRG, VIMOS-VLT deep Survey (VVDS) and {\em WiggleZ} datasets. In particular, we investigate several parametrizations of the growth index $γ(z)$, by comparing their cosmological evolution using observational growth rate data at different redshifts. Utilizing a standard likelihood analysis we find that the use of the combined growth data provided by the 2dFGRS, SDSS-LRG, VVDS and {\em WiggleZ} galaxy surveys, puts the most stringent constraints on the value of the growth index. As an exa…
We derive for the first time the growth index of matter perturbations of the FLRW flat cosmological models in which the vacuum energy depends on redshift. A particularly well motivated model of this type is the so-called quantum field vacuum, in which apart from a leading constant term $Λ_0$ there is also a $H^{2}$-dependence in the functional form of vacuum, namely $Λ(H)=Λ_{0}+3ν(H^{2}-H^{2}_{0})$. Since $|ν|\ll1$ this form endows the vacuum energy of a mild dynamics which affects the evolution of the main cosmological observables at the background and perturbation levels. Specifically, at th…
We consider the linear growth of matter perturbations on low redshifts in some $f(R)$ dark energy (DE) models. We discuss the definition of dark energy (DE) in these models and show the differences with scalar-tensor DE models. For the $f(R)$ model recently proposed by Starobinsky we show that the growth parameter $γ_0\equiv γ(z=0)$ takes the value $γ_0\simeq 0.4$ for $Ω_{m,0}=0.32$ and $γ_0\simeq 0.43$ for $Ω_{m,0}=0.23$, allowing for a clear distinction from $Λ$CDM. Though a scale-dependence appears in the growth of perturbations on higher redshifts, we find no dispersion for $γ(z)$ on low r…
We study the growth rate of matter perturbations in the context of teleparallel dark energy in a flat universe. We investigate the dynamics of different theoretical scenarios based on specific forms of the scalar field potential. Allowing for non-minimal coupling between torsion scalar and scalar field, we perform a phase-space analysis of the autonomous systems of equations through the study of critical points. We thus analyze the stability of the critical points, and discuss the cosmological implications searching for possible attractor solutions at late times. Furthermore, combing the growt…
A non-canonical scalar tachyon field is a viable candidate for dark energy and has been found to be in good agreement with observational data. Background data alone cannot completely rule out degeneracy between this model and others. To further constrain the parameters, apart from the distance measurements, we study perturbations in the tachyon scalar field and how they affect matter clustering. We consider two tachyon potentials for this study, an inverse square potential and an exponential potential. We study the evolution of the gravitational potential, matter density contrast, and dark ene…
We investigate the connection between dark energy and fourth order gravity by analyzing the behavior of scalar perturbations around a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background. The evolution equations for scalar perturbation are derived using the covariant and gauge invariant approach and applied to two widely studied $f(R)$ gravity models. The structure of the general fourth order perturbation equations and the analysis of scalar perturbations lead to the discovery of a characteristic signature of fourth order gravity in the matter power spectrum, the details of which have not seen before in othe…
A recently proposed technique allows one to constrain both the background and perturbation cosmological parameters through the distribution function of supernova Ia apparent magnitudes. Here we extend this technique to alternative cosmological scenarios, in which the growth of structure does not follow the $Λ$CDM prescription. We apply the method first to the supernova data provided by the JLA catalog combined with all the current independent redshift distortion data and with low-redshift cluster data from Chandra and show that although the supernovae alone are not very constraining, they help…
Three decades ago Heath found the integral form of the exact analytic growing mode solution of the linear density perturbation $δ$ on sub-horizon scales including the cosmological constant or the curvature term. Recently, we obtained the exact analytic form of this solution in our previous work \cite{SK}. Interestingly, we are able to extend this solution for general dark energy models with the constant equation of state $ω_{de}$ in a flat universe. This analytic solution provides the accurate and efficient tools for probing the properties of dark energy models such as the behavior of the grow…
Perturbative quantities, such as the growth rate ($f$) and index ($γ$), are powerful tools to distinguish different dark energy models or modified gravity theories even if they produce the same cosmic expansion history. In this work, without any assumption about the dynamics of the Universe, we apply a non-parametric method to current measurements of the expansion rate $H(z)$ from cosmic chronometers and high-$z$ quasar data and reconstruct the growth factor and rate of linearised density perturbations in the non-relativistic matter component. Assuming realistic values for the matter density p…
The growth rate of matter perturbations is computed in a magnetized environment for the LambdaCDM and wCDM paradigms. It is argued that the baryons do not necessarily follow into the dark matter potential wells after they are released from the drag of the photons. The baryonic evolution equations inherit a forcing term whose explicit form depends on the plasma description and can be deduced, for instance, in the resistive magnetohydrodynamical approximation. After deriving an analytical expression for the growth rate applicable when dark energy does not cluster, the effects of relativistic cor…
The strongest evidence for dark energy comes presently from geometric techniques such as the supernova distance-redshift relation. By combining the measured expansion history with the Friedmann equation one determines the energy density and its time evolution, hence the equation of state of dark energy. Because these methods rely on the Friedmann equation which has not been independently tested it is desirable to find alternative methods that work for both general relativity and other theories of gravity. Assuming that sufficiently large patches of a perturbed Robertson-Walker spacetime evolve…
We study how the cosmological constraints from growth data are improved by including the measurements of bias from Dark Energy Survey (DES). In particular, we utilize the biasing properties of the DES Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) and the growth data provided by the various galaxy surveys in order to constrain the growth index ($γ$) of the linear matter perturbations. Considering a constant growth index we can put tight constraints, up to $\sim 10\%$ accuracy, on $γ$. Specifically, using the priors of the Dark Energy Survey and implementing a joint likelihood procedure between theoretical expec…
We study for the first time the dynamical properties and the growth index of linear matter perturbations of the Finsler-Randers (FR) cosmological model, for which we consider that the cosmic fluid contains matter, radiation and a scalar field. Initially, for various FR scenarios we implement a critical point analysis and we find solutions which provide cosmic acceleration and under certain circumstances we can have de-Sitter points as stable late-time attractors. Then we derive the growth index of matter fluctuations in various Finsler-Randers cosmologies. Considering cold dark matter and negl…
We consider a cosmological model of the late universe constituted by standard cold dark matter plus a dark energy component with constant equation of state w and constant effective speed of sound. Neglecting fluctuations in the dark energy component we obtain an equation describing the evolution of sub-horizon cold dark matter perturbations through the epoch of dark matter-dark energy equality. We explore its analytic solutions and calculate an exact w-dependent correction for the dark matter growth function, logarithmic growth function and growth index parameter through the epoch considered. …
On the basis of a previously established scalar-tensor extension of the $Λ$CDM model we develop an effective fluid approach for the matter growth function. This extended $Λ$CDM (henceforth $e_ΦΛ$CDM) cosmology takes into account deviations from the standard model both via a modified background expansion and by the inclusion of geometric anisotropic stresses as well as of perturbations of the geometric dark-energy equivalent. The background dynamics is governed by an explicit analytic expression for the Hubble rate in which modifications of the standard model are given in terms of a single cons…

We apply the formalism of dynamical system analysis to investigate the evolution of interacting dark energy scenarios at the background and perturbation levels in a unified way. Since the resulting dynamical system contains the extra perturbation variable related to the matter overdensity, the critical points of the background analysis split, corresponding to different behavior of matter perturbations, and hence to stability properties. From the combined analysis, we find critical points that describe the non-accelerating matter-dominated epoch with the correct growth of matter structure, and …
The present work studies one of Einstein's alternative formulations based on the non-metricity scalar $Q$ generalized as $f(Q)$ theory. More specifically, we consider the power-law form of $f(Q)$ gravity i.e. $f(Q)=Q+α\, Q^n$. Here, we analyze the behavior of the cosmological model at the background and perturbation level. At the background level, we find the effective evolution of the model is the same as that of the $Λ$CDM for $|n|<1$. Interestingly, the geometric component of the theory solely determined the late-time acceleration of the Universe. We also examine the integrability of the mo…
We derive the evolution equation of growth factor for the matter over-dense perturbation in $f(T)$ gravity. For instance, we investigate its behavior in power law model at small redshift and compare it to the prediction of $Λ$CDM and dark energy with the same equation of state in the framework of Einstein general relativity. We find that the perturbation in $f(T)$ gravity grows slower than that in Einstein general relativity if $\p f/\p T>0$ due to the effectively weakened gravity.
We show that scalar, electromagnetic, and gravitational perturbations of extremal Kerr black holes are asymptotically self-similar under the near-horizon, late-time scaling symmetry of the background metric. This accounts for the Aretakis instability (growth of transverse derivatives) as a critical phenomenon associated with the emergent symmetry. We compute the critical exponent of each mode, which is equivalent to its decay rate. It follows from symmetry arguments that, despite the growth of transverse derivatives, all generally covariant scalar quantities decay to zero.
We study the growth of matter density perturbations delta_m for a number of viable f(R) gravity models that satisfy both cosmological and local gravity constraints, where the Lagrangian density f is a function of the Ricci scalar R. If the parameter m=Rf_{,RR}/f_{,R} today is larger than the order of 10^{-6}, linear perturbations relevant to the matter power spectrum evolve with a growth rate s=d (ln delta_m)/d (ln a) (a is the scale factor) that is larger than in the LCDM model. We find the window in the free parameter space of our models for which spatial dispersion of the growth index gamma…
We study the effect of varying sound speed on clustering dark energy in the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) scenario. The DBI action is included in the class of $k$-essence models, and it has an important role in describing the effective degrees of freedom of D-branes in the string theory. In the DBI setup, we take the anti-de Sitter (AdS) warp factor $f(ϕ)=f_0\, ϕ^{-4}$, and investigate the self-interacting quartic potential $V(ϕ)=λϕ^{4}/4$. We calculate the full expression of the effective sound speed for our model, and show that it can evolve with time during the cosmological evolution. Besides, th…
The exact nature of dark energy is currently unknown and its cosmological perturbations, when dark energy is assumed not to be the cosmological constant, are usually modeled as adiabatic. Here we explore the possibility that dark energy might have a nonadiabatic component and we examine how it would affect several key cosmological observables. We present analytical solutions for the growth rate and growth index of matter density perturbations and compare them to both numerical solutions of the fluid equations and an implementation in the Boltzmann code CLASS, finding that they all agree to wel…
The growth index of matter fluctuations is computed for ten distinct accelerating cosmological models and confronted to the latest growth rate data via a two-step process. First, we implement a joint statistical analysis in order to place constraints on the free parameters of all models using solely background data. Second, using the observed growth rate of clustering from various galaxy surveys we test the performance of the current cosmological models at the perturbation level while either marginalizing over $σ_8$ or having it as a free parameter. As a result, we find that at a statistical l…
We perform cosmological perturbation theory in Hassan-Rosen bimetric gravity for general homogeneous and isotropic backgrounds. In the de Sitter approximation, we obtain decoupled sets of massless and massive scalar gravitational fluctuations. Matter perturbations then evolve like in Einstein gravity. We perturb the future de Sitter regime by the ratio of matter to dark energy, producing quasi-de Sitter space. In this more general setting the massive and massless fluctuations mix. We argue that in the quasi-de Sitter regime, the growth of structure in bimetric gravity differs from that of Eins…
Evolution of a background space-time metric and sub-horizon matter density perturbations in the Universe is numerically analyzed in viable $f(R)$ models of present dark energy and cosmic acceleration. It is found that viable models generically exhibit recent crossing of the phantom boundary $w_{\rm DE}=-1$. Furthermore, it is shown that, as a consequence of the anomalous growth of density perturbations during the end of the matter-dominated stage, their growth index evolves non-monotonically with time and may even become negative temporarily.
We study how the resonant decay of moduli fields arising in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) could affect large scale curvature perturbations in the early universe. It has been known for some time that the presence of entropy perturbations in a multi-component system can act as seeds for the curvature perturbations on all scales. These entropy perturbations could be amplified exponentially if one of the moduli decays via stochastic resonance, affecting the curvature power spectrum in the process. By imposing the COBE normalization on this power spectrum, one could put constrain…
Cosmological tests to distinguish between dark energy (DE) and modifications to gravity are a promising route to obtain clues on the origin of cosmic acceleration. We study here the robustness of these tests to the presence of DE density, velocity, and anisotropic stress perturbations. We find that the dispersion in the growth index parameter remains small enough to distinguish between extreme cases of DE models and some commonly used modified gravity models. The sign of the slope parameter for a redshift dependent growth index was found to be inconsistent as an additional test in extreme case…
For a large class of dark energy (DE) models, for which the effective gravitational constant is a constant and there is no direct exchange of energy between DE and dark matter (DM), knowledge of the expansion history suffices to reconstruct the growth factor of linearized density perturbations in the non-relativistic matter component on scales much smaller than the Hubble distance. In this paper we develop a non-parametric method for extracting information about the perturbative growth factor from data pertaining to the luminosity or angular size distances. A comparison of the reconstructed de…
