The growth of matter perturbations in the $f(R)$ model proposed by Starobinsky is studied in this paper. Three different parametric forms of the growth index are considered respectively and constraints on the model are obtained at both the $1σ$ and $2σ$ confidence levels, by using the current observational data for the growth factor. It is found, for all the three parametric forms of the growth index examined, that the Starobinsky model is consistent with the observations only at the $2σ$ confidence level.
In this paper, we study the growth index of matter density perturbations for the power law model in $f(T)$ gravity. Using the parametrization $γ(z)=γ_0+γ_1 {z\over 1+z}$ for the growth index, which approximates the real evolution of $γ(z)$ very well, and the observational data of the growth factor, we find that, at $1σ$ confidence level, the power law model in $f(T)$ gravity is consistent with the observations, since the obtained theoretical values of $γ_0$ and $γ_1$ are in the allowed region.
We describe the fully gauge invariant cosmological perturbation equations in braneworld teleparallel gravity. In this theory, perturbations are the result of small fluctuations in the pentad field. We derive the gauge invariant 'potentials' for both geometric and matter variables. Unlike the metric fluctuations in general relativity, pentad perturbations can only contain scalar and vector modes. As a result, in teleparallel gravity, tensor modes including gravitational waves, come from the contortion tensor.
Recently, a novel Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in four dimensions has been introduced [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124 (2020) 081301]. We will investigate cosmological consequences of this model in details. We will consider linear matter density perturbations and also estimate relevant modified gravity parameters. Specially we will concentrate on the growth rate of non-relativistic matter perturbations on top of FRW geometry and show that for a narrow range of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant, observational data will be satisfied. In this paper, it is shown that for enough large values of the coupling…
We introduce gravity theories featuring spontaneously growing gauge fields where the growth is due to the Higgs mechanism. The underlying physics is inspired by the spontaneous scalarization phenomena in scalar-tensor theories. The tachyonic instability that causes the growth in spontaneous scalarization and its analog for vector fields is introduced not as an explicit potential term, but through a scalar coupling using a Higgs field. The resulting theories are distinct from previous examples of spontaneous tensorization in that they respect the gauge symmetry at the level of the action. Our r…
In the present paper, we briefly review recent studies of second-order gravitational perturbations in braneworld models. After we consider the possibility of pathological behavior of gravity at higher orders of perturbation, second-order perturbations are discussed in Randall-Sundrum braneworld models. Because the mass spectra in these braneworld models are different, we analyze them using different approaches. In the respective models, it is discussed that 4D Einstein gravity is approximately recovered at level of second-order perturbation, although there are some exceptional cases in the two…
The density perturbation of the universe has been considered in the framework of a Finslerian cosmological model in which the background spacetime of the universe is taken as the spatially flat FLRW spacetime with a Finslerian perturbation. The inhomogeneity in the matter(energy) density arises naturally in this consideration of gravity in the $( α, β)$ - Finsler space for the background spacetime of the universe. The resulting inhomogeneous matter density indicates matter perturbation departing from the uniform density, and it is caused by the Finslerian perturbation in the Riemannian spaceti…
Scalar perturbation represented by the Klein-Gordon field equation of the system of black holes in 2+1 dimensional Static charged dilaton gravity proposed by Chan and Mann is investigated analytically. The radial equation is analyzed near horizon and at the asymptotic region to show the absence of superradiance instability.
We investigate the growth factor for sub-horizon modes during late times in $f(T,\mathcal{T})$ gravity, where $T$ is the torsion scalar and $\mathcal{T}$ is the trace of the stress-energy tensor. This is achieved by obtaining the modified Mészáros equation, which describes the evolution of the perturbations of the matter energy density, and obtaining numerical results. Such results are obtained by solving the modified continuity equation and analysing the behaviour of the solutions of the latter using various constraints on the integration constants. Furthermore, the role of the anisotropic te…
I review the state of the art of the investigation on the structure formation in $f(R)$-gravity based on the Covariant and Gauge Invariant approach to perturbations. A critical analysis of the results, in particular the presence of characteristic signature of these models, together with their meaning and their implication is given.
We disclose the effects of the entropic corrections to the Friedmann equations on the growth of perturbations in the early stages of the universe. We consider two types of corrections to the area law of entropy, known as Tsallis and Barrow entropies. Using these corrections to entropy, we derive the modified Friedmann equations and explore the growth of perturbations in a flat universe filled with dark matter (DM) and cosmological constant. We employ the spherically symmetric collapse formalism and work in the linear regime for the perturbations. Interestingly enough, we find out that the prof…
We consider a model for gravity that is invariant under global scale transformations. It includes one extra real scalar field coupled non-minimally to the gravity fields. In this model all the dimensionful parameters like the gravitational constant and the cosmological constant etc. are generated by a solution of the classical equations of motion which breaks scale invariance. In this paper we demonstrate the stability of such a solution against small perturbations in a flat FRW background by making a perturbative expansion around this solution and solving the resulting equations linear in the…
In this paper we study the perturbation theory of the recently proposed Regularized Lovelock Gravity, on the curved FLRW space-time. We provide the first order perturbation equations both in the scalar and tensor sector in the presence of an additional minimally coupled scalar field. A general expression for the velocity of gravitational waves at the generic order is inferred. Moreover, we apply the results on the study of slow-roll inflation on flat FLRW background, at second order in the Regularized Lovelock Gravity, i.e. in the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet correction only. We derive the pow…
In the framework of an arbitrary $D$-dimensional metric theory, perturbations are considered on arbitrary backgrounds that are however solutions of the theory. Conserved currents for perturbations are presented following two known prescriptions: canonical Nœther theorem and Belinfante symmetrization rule. Using generalized formulae, currents in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity for arbitrary types of perturbations on arbitrary curved backgrounds (not only vacuum) are constructed in an explicit covariant form. Special attention is paid to the energy-momentum tensors for perturbations whic…
We study the reflection and transmission coefficients and the absorption cross section for scalar fields in the background of a Lifshitz black hole in three-dimensional conformal gravity with $z=0$, and we show that the absorption cross section vanishes at the low and high frequency limit. Also, we determine the quasinormal modes of scalar perturbations and then we study the stability of these black holes under scalar field perturbations.
In this paper we study cosmological perturbations in teleparallel gravity. We discuss problems which appear in standard approach to $f(T)$ gravity, and find that these problems may be solved within covariant formulation of teleparallel gravity, which take into account spin connection. We calculate spin connection which symmetrize equation for perturbation and split diagonal and non-diagonal part of equation of motion. We demonstrate that there is minimal solution for spin connection, which lead to zero slip, however, in this case one additional equation appears, so the system may become over-d…
The discovery of apparent cosmological acceleration has spawned a huge number of dark energy and modified gravity theories. The f(R) models of gravity are obtained when one replaces the Ricci scalar in the Einstein-Hilbert action by an arbitrary function of the Ricci scalar. In this work we provide expressions for the equations of state (EoS) for perturbations which completely characterize the linearized perturbations in f(R) gravity, including the scalar, vector, and tensor modes. The EoS formalism is a powerful and elegant parametrization where the modification to General Relativity are trea…
General relativity in the form where gravitational perturbations together with other physical fields propagate on an auxiliary background is considered. With using the Katz-Bi{č}ák-Lynden-Bell technique new conserved currents, divergences of antisymmetric tensor densities(superpotentials), in an arbitrary curved spacetime are constructed.
We show that spinor fields nonminimally coupled to gravity can grow spontaneously in the presence of matter. We name this phenomenon spontaneous spinorization after the spontaneous scalarization scenario in scalar-tensor theories. Underlying reason for the growth of the spinor is an instability similar to the tachyon of spontaneous scalarization. We first present the structure of a tachyonic Dirac equation, and incorporate it into the matter coupling in gravity. This causes the zero-spinor solution to be unstable and leads to spontaneous growth. We investigate the behavior of the resulting the…
Scalar and tensor cosmological perturbations during an inflationary universe scenario in the context of the a generalized gravity theory are studied. This analyze is carried out considering an ansatz on the variables associated to scalar and tensor perturbation ($z_s$ and $z_t$) in the Jordan frame. In this context, we analyze two different Ansatze for the ratio $z_s/z_t$, and we study in great detail the analytical and exact solutions for the cosmological perturbations together with the corresponding reconstruction of the background variables. Recent observational data from the Planck 2018 re…
We investigate the metric perturbations of the restricted f(R) theory of gravity in the cosmological context and explore the phenomenological implications of this model. We show that it is possible to construct a restricted model of gravity, in which the background equations are the same as the equations of motion which are derived from the Einstein-Hilbert action with the cosmological constant term. We argue that the deviation from the Einstein-Hilbert model emerges in the perturbed equations, for which we have a non-vanishing anisotropic stress. Further, with the help of the results of Planc…
In this paper we calculate the field equations for Scalar-Tensor from a variational principle, in which we have taken into account the Gibbons-York-Hawking type boundary term. We do the same for the theories $f(R)$, following, Guarnizo et al. Then, we review the equivalences between both theories in the metric formalism. Thus, starting from the perturbations under conformal-Newtonian gauge for Scalar-Tensor theories, we find the perturbations for $f(R)$ gravity under the equivalences in the same gauge. Working with two specific models of $f(R)$, we explore the equivalences between the theories…
We study stealth black hole perturbations in shift symmetric kinetic gravity braiding and obtain its analogous Regge-Wheeler and Zerilli master equations for the odd and even parity sectors. We show that the nontrivial hair of static and spherically symmetric stealth black holes contributes only an additional source term to the even parity master equation. Furthermore, we derive exact solutions to the monopolar and dipolar perturbations and show that they are generally pathological non-gauge modes, or else reduce to the pure-gauge low-order multipoles of general relativity.
We study scalar and electromagnetic perturbations of a family of nonsingular nonrotating black hole spacetimes that are solutions in a large class of conformally invariant theories of gravity. The effective potential for scalar perturbations depends on the exact form of the scaling factor. Electromagnetic perturbations do not feel the scaling factor, and the corresponding quasinormal mode spectrum is the same as in the Schwarzschild metric. We find that these black hole metrics are stable under scalar and electromagnetic perturbations. Assuming that the quasinormal mode spectrum for scalar per…
Within a gauge formulation of 3+1 gravity relying on a nonlinear realization of the group of isometries of space-time, a natural expansion of the metric tensor arises and a simple choice of the gravity dynamical variables is possible. We show that the expansion parameter can be identified with the gravitational constant and that the first order depends only on a diagonal matrix in the ensuing perturbation approach. The explicit first order solution is calculated in the static isotropic case, and its general structure is worked out in the harmonic gauge.
We have studied quasinormal modes of scalar perturbations of a black hole in massive gravity. The parameters of the theory, such as the mass of the black hole, the scalar charge of the black hole and the spherical harmonic index is varied to see how the corresponding quasinormal frequencies change. We have also studied the massive scalar field perturbations. Most of the work is done using WKB approach while sections are devoted to compute quasinormal modes via the unstable null geodesics approach and the Poschl-Teller approximation. Comparisons are done with the Schwarzschild black hole.
Two different realistic $F(R)$ modified gravity models are considered in the framework of the Friedmann-Lemetre-Robertson-Walker universe. The parameters of these two models are adjusted to reach coherence with the most recent and accurate observations of the current universe. A study of the growth of matter density perturbations is done, and several parametrizations of the growth index are developed for both models. The ansatz for the growth index given by $γ= γ_0 + γ_1 z/(1+z)$ seems to be the best parametrization for the two models considered. Finally, the values obtained for $γ_0$ and $γ_1…
In this manuscript, we studied the accelerated expansion history of the universe and the formations of large-scale structures using $f(Q)$ gravity model. The expansion rate of the universe within distance modulus and redshift has been performed in $f(Q)$ gravity. This work is also devoted to investigating the linear cosmological perturbations in the $f(Q)$ gravity model using the $1 + 3$ covariant formalism. The scalar and harmonic decomposition techniques are applied to find the evolution equation. The growth of matter density contrasts is analyzed with redshift $z$. Using the nonmetricity mo…
The "complexity = action" duality states that the quantum complexity is equal to the action of the stationary AdS black holes within the Wheeler-DeWitt patch at late time approximation. We compute the action growth rates of the neutral and charged black holes in massive gravity and the neutral, charged and Kerr-Newman black holes in $f(R)$ gravity to test this conjecture. Besides, we investigate the effects of the massive graviton terms, higher derivative terms and the topology of the black hole horizon on the complexity growth rate.
We study the linear growth of matter perturbations in the DGP model with the growth index $γ$ as a function of redshift. At the linear approximation: $γ(z)\approxγ_0+γ_0^\prime z $, we find that, for $0.2\leqΩ_{m,0}\leq0.35$, $γ_0$ takes the value from 0.658 to 0.671, and $γ_0^\prime$ ranges from 0.035 to 0.042. With three low redshift observational data of the growth factor, we obtain the observational constraints on $γ_0$ and $γ_0'$ for the $ΛCDM$ and DGP models and find that the observations favor the $ΛCDM$ model but at the $1σ$ confidence level both the $ΛCDM$ and DGP models are consisten…
Recently it was shown that if the matter congruence of a general relativistic perfect fluid flow in an almost FLRW universe is shear-free, then it must be either expansion or rotation-free. Here we generalize this result for a general f(R) theory of gravity and show there exist scenarios where this result can be avoided. This suggests that there are situations where linearized forth-order gravity shares properties with Newtonian theory not valid in General Relativity.
One of the exact solutions of f(R) theories of gravity in the presence of different forms of matter exactly mimics the LCDM solution of general relativity at the background level. In this work we study the evolution of scalar cosmological perturbations in the covariant and gauge-invariant formalism and show that although the background in such a model is indistinguishable from the standard LCDM cosmology, this degeneracy is broken at the level of first-order perturbations. This is done by predicting different rates of structure formation in LCDM and the f(R) model both in the complete and quas…
We study the complexity growth by using complexity = action (CA) proposal in Minimal Massive 3D Gravity(MMG) model which is proposed for resolving the bulk-boundary clash problem of Topologically Massive Gravity(TMG). We observe that the rate of the complexity growth for BTZ black hole saturates the proposed bound by physical mass of the BTZ black hole in the MMG model, when the angular momentum parameter and the inner horizon of black hole goes to zero.
To study the effect of parity-violation on the rate of complexity growth, by using "Complexity=Action" conjecture, we find the complexity growth rates in different solutions of the chiral theory of Topologically Massive Gravity (TMG) and parity-preserving theory of New Massive Gravity (NMG). Using the results, one can see that decreasing the parameter $μ$, which increases the effect of Chern-Simons term and increases chirality, would increase the rate of growth of complexity. Also one can observe a stronger correlation between complexity growth and temperature rather than complexity growth and…
A single parameter, the gravitational growth index γ, succeeds in characterizing the growth of density perturbations in the linear regime separately from the effects of the cosmic expansion. The parameter is restricted to a very narrow range for models of dark energy obeying the laws of general relativity but takes on distinctly different values in models of beyond-Einstein gravity. In analogy to the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism for testing gravity, we extend and motivate the gravitational growth index, or Minimal Modified Gravity, approach to parameterizing beyond-Einstein cos…
We derive the evolution equation of growth factor for the matter over-dense perturbation in $f(T)$ gravity. For instance, we investigate its behavior in power law model at small redshift and compare it to the prediction of $Λ$CDM and dark energy with the same equation of state in the framework of Einstein general relativity. We find that the perturbation in $f(T)$ gravity grows slower than that in Einstein general relativity if $\p f/\p T>0$ due to the effectively weakened gravity.
In the present paper, we investigate the linear growth of matter fluctuations based on a concrete model of the projected massive gravity, which is free of the Boulware-Deser ghost and preserves the global Lorentz symmetry. We found that at subhorizon scales, the modification to the linear growth is strongly suppressed even without nonlinear screening of an additional force. In addition, we obtain observational constraints from distance and redshift space distortion measurements and find that there is a parameter region that is consistent both observationally and theoretically.
Among many modified gravity theories, the Chern-Simons modified gravity stands out as one of the few examples whose Dirichlet boundary problem has been well studied. Known solutions to this theory include the Schwarzschild black hole and a slowly rotating black hole. Making use of the Dirichlet boundary term of this theory, we calculate the late-time action growth rates of the Wheeler-DeWitt patch for the Schwarzschild and the slowly rotating solutions. In light of the conjecture of complexity/action duality, the result has implications on the quantum complexity of a state in the dual field th…
Using redshift space distortion data, we perform model-independent reconstructions of the growth history of matter inhomogeneity in the expanding Universe using two methods: crossing statistics and Gaussian processes. We then reconstruct the corresponding history of the Universe background expansion and fit it to type Ia supernovae data, putting constraints on $(Ω_\mathrm{m,0},σ_{8,0})$. The results obtained are consistent with the concordance flat-$Λ$CDM model and General Relativity as the gravity theory given the current quality of the inhomogeneity growth data.
We provide for the first time the growth index of linear matter fluctuations of the power law $f(T) \propto (-T)^{b}$ gravity model. We find that the asymptotic form of this particular $f(T)$ model is $γ\approx \frac{6}{11-6b}$ which obviously extends that of the $Λ$CDM model, $γ_Λ\approx 6/11$. Finally, we generalize the growth index analysis of $f(T)$ gravity in the case where $γ$ is allowed to vary with redshift.
We perform cosmological perturbation theory in Hassan-Rosen bimetric gravity for general homogeneous and isotropic backgrounds. In the de Sitter approximation, we obtain decoupled sets of massless and massive scalar gravitational fluctuations. Matter perturbations then evolve like in Einstein gravity. We perturb the future de Sitter regime by the ratio of matter to dark energy, producing quasi-de Sitter space. In this more general setting the massive and massless fluctuations mix. We argue that in the quasi-de Sitter regime, the growth of structure in bimetric gravity differs from that of Eins…
We construct a warm inflation model with inflaton field non-minimally coupled to induced gravity on a warped DGP brane. We incorporate possible modification of the induced gravity on the brane in the spirit of $f(R)$-gravity. We study cosmological perturbations in this setup. In the case of two field inflation such as warm inflation, usually entropy perturbations are generated. While it is expected that in the case of one field inflation these perturbations to be removed, we show that even in the absence of the radiation field, entropy perturbations are generated in our setup due to non-minima…
We present a general parallelized and easy-to-use code to perform numerical simulations of structure formation using the COLA (COmoving Lagrangian Acceleration) method for cosmological models that exhibit scale-dependent growth at the level of first and second order Lagrangian perturbation theory. For modified gravity theories we also include screening using a fast approximate method that covers all the main examples of screening mechanisms in the literature. We test the code by comparing it to full simulations of two popular modified gravity models, namely $f(R)$ gravity and nDGP, and find go…
We investigate the tensor perturbation in the inflation model driven by a massive-scalar field in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity. For short wave-length modes, the perturbation feature is very similar to that of the usual chaotic inflation. For long wave-length modes, the perturbation exhibits a peculiar rise in the power spectrum which may leave a signature in the cosmic microwave background radiation.
A low-energy perturbation theory is developed from the nonperturbative framework of covariant Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG) by employing the background field method. The resulting perturbation theory is a 2-parameter expansion in the semiclassical and low-energy regime. The two expansion parameters are the large spin and small curvature. The leading order effective action coincides with the Einstein-Hilbert action. The subleading corrections organized by the two expansion parameters give the modifications of Einstein gravity in quantum and high-energy regime from LQG. The perturbation theory deve…
On the holographic complexity dual to the bulk action, we investigate the action growth for a shock wave geometry in a massive gravity theory within the Wheeler-De Witt (WDW) patch at the late time limit. For a global shock wave, the graviton mass does not affect the action growth in the bulk, i.e. the complexity on the boundary, showing that the action growth (complexity) is the same for both the Einstein gravity and the massive gravity. Nevertheless, for a local shock wave that depends on transverse coordinates, the action growth (complexity) is proportional to the butterfly velocity for the…
We re-analyze the nonlocal gravity model of Deser and Woodard which was proposed to account for the current phase of cosmic acceleration. We show that the growth of perturbations predicted by this nonlocal gravity model when its background evolution is fixed by some particular non-$Λ$CDM models can be substantially lower than when its background is fixed by $Λ$CDM. This can be seen when we consider the background expansion by a dark energy model with a slightly less negative equation of state with respect to cosmological constant. Our results hints towards a fact that the choice of the backgro…
Recently, we presented a unified way of analysing classical cosmological perturbation in generalized gravity theories. In this paper, we derive the perturbation spectrums generated from quantum fluctuations again in unified forms. We consider a situation where an accelerated expansion phase of the early universe is realized in a particular generic phase of the generalized gravity. We take the perturbative semiclassical approximation which treats the perturbed parts of the metric and matter fields as quantum mechanical operators. Our generic results include the conventional power-law and expone…
We investigate the connection between dark energy and fourth order gravity by analyzing the behavior of scalar perturbations around a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background. The evolution equations for scalar perturbation are derived using the covariant and gauge invariant approach and applied to two widely studied $f(R)$ gravity models. The structure of the general fourth order perturbation equations and the analysis of scalar perturbations lead to the discovery of a characteristic signature of fourth order gravity in the matter power spectrum, the details of which have not seen before in othe…
Adding to our previous method for dealing with gravitational modifications at redshift $z\gtrsim3$ through a single parameter, we investigate treatment of lower redshift modifications to linear growth observables. We establish subpercent accurate fits to the redshift space distortion observable $fσ_8(a)$ using two parameters binned in redshift, testing the results for modifications with time dependence that rises, falls, is nonmonotonic, is multipeaked, and corresponds to $f(R)$ and braneworld gravity. The residuals are then propagated to cosmological parameter biases for DESI observations, an…
We place tight constraints on the growth index $γ$ by using the recent growth history results of 2dFGRS, SDSS-LRG, VIMOS-VLT deep Survey (VVDS) and {\em WiggleZ} datasets. In particular, we investigate several parametrizations of the growth index $γ(z)$, by comparing their cosmological evolution using observational growth rate data at different redshifts. Utilizing a standard likelihood analysis we find that the use of the combined growth data provided by the 2dFGRS, SDSS-LRG, VVDS and {\em WiggleZ} galaxy surveys, puts the most stringent constraints on the value of the growth index. As an exa…
A probability of distinguishing between $Λ$CDM model and modified gravity is studied by using the future observations for the growth rate of cosmic structure (Euclid redshift survey). Adopting extended DGP model, Kinetic Gravity Braiding model, and Galileon model as modified gravity, we compare predicted cosmic growth rate by models to the mock observational data. The growth rate $fσ_8$ in the original DGP model is suppressed compared with the $Λ$CDM case, for the same value of the current density parameter of matter $Ω_{m,0}$, because of the suppression of effective gravitational constant. In…
We show that the spontaneous scalarization scenario in scalar-tensor theories is a specific case of a more general phenomenon. The key fact is that the instability causing the spontaneous growth in scalars is due to the nonminimal coupling in the theory, and not related to the nature of the scalar. Another field with the same form of coupling undergoes spontaneous growth as well. We explicitly demonstrate this idea for vectors, naming it "spontaneous vectorization", and study spherically symmetric neutron stars in such a theory. We also comment on other tensor fields the idea can be applied, n…
Recent experimental determinations of the spectral index describing the scalar mode spectrum of density perturbations encourage comparison with predictions from models of the very early universe. Unlike extended inflation, Induced-gravity Inflation predicts a power spectrum with $0.98 \leq n_s \leq 1.00$, in close agreement with the experimental measurements.
