In the framework of an arbitrary $D$-dimensional metric theory, perturbations are considered on arbitrary backgrounds that are however solutions of the theory. Conserved currents for perturbations are presented following two known prescriptions: canonical Nœther theorem and Belinfante symmetrization rule. Using generalized formulae, currents in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity for arbitrary types of perturbations on arbitrary curved backgrounds (not only vacuum) are constructed in an explicit covariant form. Special attention is paid to the energy-momentum tensors for perturbations which are an important part in the structure of the currents. We use the derived expressions for two applied calculations: a) to present the energy density for weak flat gravitational waves in $D$-dimensional EGB gravity; b) to construct the mass flux for the Maeda-Dadhich-Molina 3D radiating black holes of a Kaluza-Klein type in 6D EGB gravity.
We investigate the connection between stress-energy tensor (SET) arising from Noether's theorem and Belinfante SET which can be obtained as a right-hand side of the Einstein's equation in the flat metric limit. This question is studied in the wide class of Poincarè-invariant field theories with actions which depend on the tensor fields of arbitrary rank and their derivatives of arbitrary order. For this class we derive the relation between these SET and present the exact expression for the difference between them. We also show that the difference between corresponding integrals of motion can b…
It is broadly known that Lie point symmetries and their subcase, Noether symmetries, can be used as a geometric criterion to select alternative theories of gravity. Here, we use Noether symmetries as a selection criterion to distinguish those models of $f(R,G)$ theory, with $R$ and $G$ being the Ricci and the Gauss-Bonnet scalars respectively, that are invariant under point transformations in a spherically symmetric background. In total, we find ten different forms of $f$ that present symmetries and calculate their invariant quantities, i.e Noether vector fields. Furthermore, we use these Noet…
In this paper, we analyze static traversable wormholes via Noether symmetry technique in modified Gauss-Bonnet $f(\mathcal{G})$ theory of gravity (where $\mathcal{G}$ represents Gauss-Bonnet term). We assume isotropic matter configuration and spherically symmetric metric. We construct three $f(\mathcal{G})$ models, i.e, linear, quadratic and exponential forms and examine the consistency of these models. The traversable nature of wormhole solutions is discussed via null energy bound of the effective stress-energy tensor while physical behavior is studied through standard energy bounds of isotro…
Generalized Noether's theory is a useful method for researching the modified gravity theories about the conserved quantities and symmetries. A generally Gauss-Bonnet gravity $f(R,\mathcal{G})$ theory was proposed as an alternative gravity model. Through the generalized Noether symmetry, polynomial and product forms of the $f(R,\mathcal{G})$ theory with corresponding conserved quantities and symmetries are researched. Then suitable general forms of the polynomial form $f(R,\mathcal{G}) \!=\! k_1 R^n + (6)^{\frac{n}{2}}(-1)^{n+1} k_1 \mathcal{G}^{\frac{n}{2}}$ and the product form $f(R,\mathcal{…
Non-local gravity cosmologies are considered under the standard of Noether Symmetry Approach. In particular, we focus on non-local theories whose gravitational actions depend on curvature and Gauss-Bonnet scalar invariants. Specific functional forms of the related point-like Lagrangians are selected by Noether symmetries and we solve the corresponding field equations finding out exact cosmological solutions.

We discuss an extended Teleparallel gravity models comprising functions of scalar invariants constructed by torsion, torsion Gauss-Bonnet and boundary terms. We adopt the Noether Symmetry Approach to select the functional forms, the first integrals and, eventually, the exact solutions of the dynamics in the context of flat Friedman-Robertson-Walker cosmology. Standard perfect fluid matter, minimally coupled to geometry, is considered. Several physically consistent models are derived with related exact solutions.
All degrees of freedom related to the torsion scalar can be explored by analysing, the $f(T,T_G)$ gravity formalism where, $T$ is a torsion scalar and $T_G$ is the teleparallel counterpart of the Gauss-Bonnet topological invariant term. The well-known Noether symmetry approach is a useful tool for selecting models that are motivated at a fundamental level and determining the exact solution to a given Lagrangian, hence we explore Noether symmetry approach in $f(T,T_G)$ gravity formalism with three different forms of $f(T,T_G)$ and study how to establish nontrivial Noether vector form for each o…
We discuss non-minimally coupled cosmologies involving different geometric invariants. Specifically, actions containing a non-minimally coupled scalar field to gravity described, in turn, by curvature, torsion and Gauss--Bonnet scalars are considered. We show that couplings, potentials and kinetic terms are determined by the existence of Noether symmetries which, moreover, allows to reduce and solve dynamics. The main finding of the paper is that different non-minimally coupled theories, presenting the same Noether symmetries, are dynamically equivalent. In other words, Noether symmetries are …
We study a theory of gravity of the form $f(\mathcal{G})$ where $\mathcal{G}$ is the Gauss-Bonnet topological invariant without considering the standard Einstein-Hilbert term as common in the literature, in arbitrary $(d+1)$ dimensions. The approach is motivated by the fact that, in particular conditions, the Ricci curvature scalar can be easily recovered and then a pure $f(\cal G)$ gravity can be considered a further generalization of General Relativity like $f(R)$ gravity. Searching for Noether symmetries, we specify the functional forms invariant under point transformations in a static and …
In a recent publication a procedure was developed which can be used to derive completely gauge invariant models from general Lagrangian densities with $N$ order of derivatives and $M$ rank of tensor potential. This procedure was then used to show that unique models follow for each order, namely classical electrodynamics for $N = M = 1$ and linearized Gauss-Bonnet gravity for $N = M = 2$. In this article, the nature of the connection between these two well explored physical models is further investigated by means of an additional common property; a complete dual formulation. First we give a rev…
Recent research has highlighted the non-uniqueness problem of energy-momentum tensors in linearized gravity; many different tensors are published in the literature, yet for particular calculations a unique expression is required. It has been shown that (A) none of these spin-2 energy-momentum tensors are gauge invariant and (B) the Noether and Hilbert energy-momentum tensors are not, in general, equivalent; therefore uniqueness criteria is difficult to specify. Conventional wisdom states that the various published energy-momentum tensors for linearized gravity can be derived from the canonical…
We develop the $n$-dimensional cosmology for $f(\mathcal{G})$ gravity, where $\mathcal{G}$ is the \emph{Gauss-Bonnet} topological invariant. Specifically, by the so-called Noether Symmetry Approach, we select $f(\mathcal{G})\simeq \mathcal{G}^k$ power-law models where $k$ is a real number. In particular, the case $k = 1/2$ for $n=4$ results equivalent to General Relativity showing that we do not need to impose the action $R+f(\mathcal{G})$ to reproduce the Einstein theory. As a further result, de Sitter solutions are recovered in the case where $f(\mathcal{G})$ is non-minimally coupled to a sc…
