Non-local gravity cosmologies are considered under the standard of Noether Symmetry Approach. In particular, we focus on non-local theories whose gravitational actions depend on curvature and Gauss-Bonnet scalar invariants. Specific functional forms of the related point-like Lagrangians are selected by Noether symmetries and we solve the corresponding field equations finding out exact cosmological solutions.
Adopting Noether point symmetries, we classify and integrate dynamical systems coming from Horndeski cosmologies. The method is particularly effective both to select the form of Horndeski models and to derive exact cosmological solutions. Starting from the Lagrangians selected by the Noether symmetries, it is possible to derive several modified theories of gravity like $f(R)$ gravity, Brans-Dicke gravity, string inspired gravity and so on. In any case, exact solutions are found out.
We discuss the Noether Symmetry Approach in the framework of Gauss-Bonnet cosmology showing that the functional form of the $F(R, {\cal G})$ function, where $R$ is the Ricci scalar and ${\cal G}$ is the Gauss-Bonnet topological invariant, can be determined by the presence of symmetries. Besides, the method allows to find out exact solutions due to the reduction of cosmological dynamical system and the presence of conserved quantities. Some specific cosmological models are worked out
Cyclic universes with bouncing solutions are candidates for solving the big bang initial singularity problem. Here we seek bouncing solutions in a modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity theory, of the type $R+f(G)$, where $R$ is the Ricci scalar, $G$ is the Gauss-Bonnet term, and $f$ some function of it. In finding such a bouncing solution we resort to a technique that reduces the order of the differential equations of the $R+f(G)$ theory to second order equations. As general relativity is a theory whose equations are of second order, this order reduction technique enables one to find solutions which a…
A generalized teleparallel cosmological model, $f(T_\mathcal{G},T)$, containing the torsion scalar $T$ and the teleparallel counterpart of the Gauss-Bonnet topological invariant $T_{\mathcal{G}}$, is studied in the framework of the Noether Symmetry Approach. As $f(\mathcal{G}, R)$ gravity, where $\mathcal{G}$ is the Gauss-Bonnet topological invariant and $R$ is the Ricci curvature scalar, exhausts all the curvature information that one can construct from the Riemann tensor, in the same way, $f(T_\mathcal{G},T)$ contains all the possible information directly related to the torsion tensor. In th…
We discuss non-minimally coupled cosmologies involving different geometric invariants. Specifically, actions containing a non-minimally coupled scalar field to gravity described, in turn, by curvature, torsion and Gauss--Bonnet scalars are considered. We show that couplings, potentials and kinetic terms are determined by the existence of Noether symmetries which, moreover, allows to reduce and solve dynamics. The main finding of the paper is that different non-minimally coupled theories, presenting the same Noether symmetries, are dynamically equivalent. In other words, Noether symmetries are …
We study cosmological solutions in the low-energy effective heterotic string theory, which is the Einstein gravity with Gauss-Bonnet term and the dilaton. We show that the field equations are cast into an autonomous system for flat internal and external spaces, and derive all the fixed points in the system. We also examine the time evolution of the solutions and whether the solutions can give (transient) accelerated expansion of our four-dimensional space in the Einstein frame.
Models with a scalar field coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet Lagrangian appear naturally from Kaluza-Klein compactifications of pure higher-dimensional gravity. We study linear, cosmological perturbations in the limits of weak coupling and slow-roll, and derive simple expressions for the main observable sub-horizon quantities: the anisotropic stress factor, the time-dependent gravitational constant, and the matter perturbation growth factor. Using present observational data, and assuming slow-roll for the dark energy field, we find that the fraction of energy density associated with the coupled Gaus…
We consider (thin) braneworlds with conical singularities in six-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with a bulk cosmological constant. The Gauss-Bonnet term is necessary in six dimensions for including non-trivial brane matter. We show that this model for axially symmetric bulks does not possess isotropic braneworld cosmological solutions.
The modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity can be motivated by a number of physical reasons, including: the uniqueness of a gravitational Lagrangian in four and higher dimensions and the leading order $α^\prime$ corrections in superstring theory. Such an effective theory of scalar-tensor gravity has been modeled in the recent past to explain both the initial cosmological singularity problem and the observationally supported cosmological perturbations. Here I present an overview of the recent developments in the use of modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity to explain current observations, touching on key cosmol…
We consider a physically viable cosmological model that has a field dependent Gauss-Bonnet coupling in its effective action, in addition to a standard scalar field potential. The presence of such terms in the four dimensional effective action gives rise to several novel effects, such as a four dimensional flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe undergoing a cosmic inflation at early epoch, as well as a cosmic acceleration at late times. The model predicts, during inflation, spectra of both density perturbations and gravitational waves that may fall well within the experimental bounds. Further…
Dark energy cosmologies with an equation of state parameter $w$ less than -1 are often found to violate the null energy condition and show unstable behaviour. A solution to this problem may require the existence of a consistent effective theory that violates the null energy condition only momentarily and does not develop any instabilities or other pathological features for a late time cosmology. A model which incorporates a dynamical scalar field $ϕ$ coupled to the quadratic Riemann invariant of the Gauss-Bonnet form is a viable proposal. Such an effective theory is shown to admit nonsingular …
It is broadly known that Lie point symmetries and their subcase, Noether symmetries, can be used as a geometric criterion to select alternative theories of gravity. Here, we use Noether symmetries as a selection criterion to distinguish those models of $f(R,G)$ theory, with $R$ and $G$ being the Ricci and the Gauss-Bonnet scalars respectively, that are invariant under point transformations in a spherically symmetric background. In total, we find ten different forms of $f$ that present symmetries and calculate their invariant quantities, i.e Noether vector fields. Furthermore, we use these Noet…
We develop a Gauss-Bonnet extension of Loop Quantum Cosmology, by introducing holonomy corrections in modified $F(\mathcal{G})$ theories of gravity. Within the context of our formalism, we provide a perturbative expansion in the critical density, a parameter characteristic of Loop Quantum Gravity theories, and we result in having leading order corrections to the classical $F(\mathcal{G})$ theories of gravity. After extensively discussing the formalism, we present a reconstruction method that makes possible to find the Loop Quantum Cosmology corrected $F(\mathcal{G})$ theory that can realize va…
In this paper, we study the phase space of cosmological models in the context of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory. More specifically, we consider a generalized dynamical system that encapsulates the main features of the theory and for the cases that this is rendered autonomous, we analyze its equilibrium points and stable and unstable manifolds corresponding to several distinct cosmological evolutions. As we demonstrate, the phase space is quite rich and contains invariant structures, which dictate the conditions under which the theory may be valid and viable in describing the evolution Universe d…
We extend the covariant analysis of the brane cosmological evolution in order to take into account, apart from a general matter content and an induced-gravity term on the brane, a Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk. The gravitational effect of the bulk matter on the brane evolution can be described in terms of the total bulk mass as measured by a bulk observer at the location of the brane. This mass appears in the effective Friedmann equation through a term characterized as generalized dark radiation that induces mirage effects in the evolution. We discuss the normal and self-accelerating branches …
We investigate the stability against inhomogeneous perturbations and the appearance of ghost modes in Gauss-Bonnet gravitational theories with a non-minimally coupled scalar field, which can be regarded as either the dilaton or a compactification modulus in the context of string theory. Through cosmological linear perturbations we extract four no-ghost and two sub-luminal constraint equations, written in terms of background quantities, which must be satisfied for consistency. We also argue that, for a general action with quadratic Riemann invariants, homogeneous and inhomogeneous perturbations…
In this paper, we analyze static traversable wormholes via Noether symmetry technique in modified Gauss-Bonnet $f(\mathcal{G})$ theory of gravity (where $\mathcal{G}$ represents Gauss-Bonnet term). We assume isotropic matter configuration and spherically symmetric metric. We construct three $f(\mathcal{G})$ models, i.e, linear, quadratic and exponential forms and examine the consistency of these models. The traversable nature of wormhole solutions is discussed via null energy bound of the effective stress-energy tensor while physical behavior is studied through standard energy bounds of isotro…
We first illustrate on a simple example how, in existing brane cosmological models, the connection of a 'bulk' region to its mirror image creates matter on the 'brane'. Next, we present a cosmological model with no $Z_2$ symmetry which is a spherical symmetric 'shell' separating two metrically different 5-dimensional anti-de Sitter regions. We find that our model becomes Friedmannian at late times, like present brane models, but that its early time behaviour is very different: the scale factor grows from a non-zero value at the big bang singularity. We then show how the Israel matching conditi…
The (n +1)-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) model is considered. For diagonal cosmological metrics, the equations of motion are written as a set of Lagrange equations with the effective Lagrangian containing two "minisuperspace" metrics on R^n: a 2-metric of pseudo-Euclidean signature and a Finslerian 4-metric proportional to the n-dimensional Berwald-Moor 4-metric. For the case of the "pure" Gauss-Bonnet model, two exact solutions are presented, those with power-law and exponential dependences of the scale factors (w.r.t. the synchronous time variable). (The power-law solution was cons…
We study accelerating cosmological solutions of a general class of non-linear gravities which depend on Gauss-Bonnet and other higher derivative invariants. To achieve this goal a local formulation with auxiliary scalars for arbitrary higher-derivative non-local gravity is developed. It is demonstrated that non-local Gauss-Bonnet gravity can be reduced, in the local formulation, to a model of string-inspired scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. A natural unification, in the theory here developed, of the early-time inflation epoch with a late-time acceleration stage can also be realized.
All degrees of freedom related to the torsion scalar can be explored by analysing, the $f(T,T_G)$ gravity formalism where, $T$ is a torsion scalar and $T_G$ is the teleparallel counterpart of the Gauss-Bonnet topological invariant term. The well-known Noether symmetry approach is a useful tool for selecting models that are motivated at a fundamental level and determining the exact solution to a given Lagrangian, hence we explore Noether symmetry approach in $f(T,T_G)$ gravity formalism with three different forms of $f(T,T_G)$ and study how to establish nontrivial Noether vector form for each o…
Generalized Noether's theory is a useful method for researching the modified gravity theories about the conserved quantities and symmetries. A generally Gauss-Bonnet gravity $f(R,\mathcal{G})$ theory was proposed as an alternative gravity model. Through the generalized Noether symmetry, polynomial and product forms of the $f(R,\mathcal{G})$ theory with corresponding conserved quantities and symmetries are researched. Then suitable general forms of the polynomial form $f(R,\mathcal{G}) \!=\! k_1 R^n + (6)^{\frac{n}{2}}(-1)^{n+1} k_1 \mathcal{G}^{\frac{n}{2}}$ and the product form $f(R,\mathcal{…
This paper is devoted to investigate the recently proposed modified Gauss-Bonnet $f(\mathcal{G},T)$ gravity, with $\mathcal{G}$, the Gauss-Bonnet term, coupled with ${T}$, the trace of energy-momentum tensor. We have used the Noether symmetry methodology to discuss some cosmologically important $f(\mathcal{G},T)$ gravity models with anisotropic background. In particular, the Noether symmetry equations for modified $f(\mathcal{G},T)$ gravity are reported for locally rotationally symmetric Bianchi type $I$ universe. Explicitly, two models have been proposed to explore the exact solutions and the…
In the framework of an arbitrary $D$-dimensional metric theory, perturbations are considered on arbitrary backgrounds that are however solutions of the theory. Conserved currents for perturbations are presented following two known prescriptions: canonical Nœther theorem and Belinfante symmetrization rule. Using generalized formulae, currents in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity for arbitrary types of perturbations on arbitrary curved backgrounds (not only vacuum) are constructed in an explicit covariant form. Special attention is paid to the energy-momentum tensors for perturbations whic…
Using Noether's identities, we define a superpotential with respect to a background for the Einstein Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity. As an example, we show that its associated conserved charge yields the mass-energy of a D-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet black hole in an anti-de Sitter spacetime.
We compute the mass and angular momenta of rotating anti-de Sitter spacetimes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity using a superpotential derived from standard Noether identities. The calculation relies on the fact that the Einstein and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet vacuum equations are the same when linearized on maximally symmetric backgrounds and uses the recently discovered D-dimensional Kerr-anti-de Sitter solutions to Einstein's equations.
We study a model of scalar field with kinetic terms non-minimally coupled to to the curvature, and the scalar field coupled to the Gauss Bonnet 4-dimensional invariant. A variety of solutions are found, giving rise to different cosmological scenarios. A unified description of early time matter (radiation) dominance with transitions to late time quintessence and phantom phases have been made. Among others, we found solutions unifying asymptotically the early power law behavior and late time cosmological constant. Solutions of Chaplygin gas and generalized Chaplygin gas cosmologies have also bee…
In this work we investigate which Loop Quantum Cosmology corrected Gauss-Bonnet $F(\mathcal{G})$ gravity can realize two singular cosmological scenarios, the intermediate inflation and the singular bounce scenarios. The intermediate inflation scenario has a Type III sudden singularity at $t=0$, while the singular bounce has a soft Type IV singularity. By using perturbative techniques, we find the holonomy corrected $F(\mathcal{G})$ gravities that generate at leading order the aforementioned cosmologies and we also argue that the effect of the holonomy corrections is minor to the power spectrum…
We discuss the Hamiltonian dynamics for cosmologies coming from Extended Theories of Gravity. In particular, minisuperspace models are taken into account searching for Noether symmetries. The existence of conserved quantities gives selection rule to recover classical behaviors in cosmic evolution according to the so called Hartle criterion, that allows to select correlated regions in the configuration space of dynamical variables. We show that such a statement works for general classes of Extended Theories of Gravity and is conformally preserved. Furthermore, the presence of Noether symmetries…
We analytically derive the covariant form of the Riemann (curvature) tensor for homogeneous Metric-Affine Cosmologies. That is, we present, in a Cosmological setting, the most general covariant form of the full Riemann tensor including also its non-Riemannian pieces which are associated to spacetime torsion and non-metricity. Having done so we also compute a list of the curvature tensor by-products such as Ricci tensor, homothetic curvature, Ricci scalar, Einstein tensor etc. Finally we derive the generalized Metric-Affine version of the usual Gauss-Bonnet density in this background and demons…
An off-shell generalization of the Abbott-Deser-Tekin (ADT) conserved charge was recently proposed by Kim et al. They achieved this by introducing off-shell Noether currents and potentials. In this paper, we construct the crucial off-shell Noether current by the variation of the Bianchi identity for the expression of motion equation, with the help of the property of Killing vector. Our Noether current, which contains an additional term that is just one half of the Lie derivative of a surface term with respect to the Killing vector, takes a different form in comparison with the one in their wor…
A string-inspired effective theory of gravity, containing Gauss-Bonnet invariant interacting with a scalar field, is considered in view of obtaining cosmological dark energy solutions. A Lagrange multiplier is inserted into the action in order to achieve the cosmological reconstruction by selecting suitable forms of couplings and potentials. Several cosmological exact solutions (including dark energy of quintessence, phantom or Little Rip type) are derived in presence and in absence of the Lagrange multiplier showing the difference in the two dynamical approaches. In the models that we conside…
A scalar-tensor model with Gauss-Bonnet and non-minimal kinetic couplings is considered, in which ghost modes are eliminated via a Lagrange multiplier constraint. A reconstruction procedure is deviced for the scalar potential and Lagrange multiplier, valid for any given cosmological scenario. In particular, inflationary and dark energy cosmologies of different types (power-law, Little-Rip, de Sitter, quasi de Sitter) are reconstructed in such models. It is shown that, for various choices of the kinetic coupling terms, it is possible to obtain a viable inflationary phenomenology compatible with…
In considering alternative higher-order gravity theories, one is liable to be motivated in pursuing models consistent and inspired by several candidates of a fundamental theory of quantum gravity. Indeed, motivations from string/M-theory predict that scalar field couplings with the Gauss-Bonnet invariant, G, are important in the appearance of non-singular early time cosmologies. In this work, we discuss the viability of an interesting alternative gravitational theory, namely, modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity or f(G) gravity. We consider specific realistic forms of f(G) analyzed in the literature …
We investigate the Gauss-Bonnet dark energy model and its deformed version on Hořava-Lifshitz cosmology, which belongs to the class of cosmologies obtained from the so-called projectable version of Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. In particular, we investigate the bulk/boundary interaction in this scenario through the $Q$ function, which we interpret as a measure of the energy transference between the bulk and the spacetime boundary. Then we discuss whether the thermal equilibrium will be stable or not, once it is reached, and the validity of the generalized second law. We show that the $Q$ function c…
We investigate the entropy of black holes in Gauss-Bonnet and Lovelock gravity using the Noether charge approach, in which the entropy is given as the integral of a suitable (n-2) form charge over the event horizon. We compare the results to those obtained in other approaches. We also comment on the appearance of negative entropies in some cases, and show that there is an additive ambiguity in the definition of the entropy which can be appropriately chosen to avoid this problem.
The present thesis is focused on the study of FLRW cosmology in modified gravities and with scalar fields. The mystery of dark energy has made that the last decade, many efforts in theoretical physics have been focused on the explanation of the current acceleration of the Universe expansion. On the other hand, an early accelerated epoch, known as inflation, is also required in the standard cosmological model in order to fit the observational data. Here, we study the possibility to explain both effects under the same mechanism, by means of scalar fields or modified gravity. In this sense, F(R) …
We revisit nonsingular cosmologies in which the limiting curvature hypothesis is realized. We study the cosmological perturbations of the theory and determine the general criteria for stability. For the simplest model, we find generic Ostrogradski instabilities unless the action contains the Weyl tensor squared with the appropriate coefficient. When considering two specific nonsingular cosmological scenarios(one inflationary and one genesis model), we find ghost and gradient instabilities throughout most of the cosmic evolution. Furthermore, we show that the theory is equivalent to a theory of…
We develop the $n$-dimensional cosmology for $f(\mathcal{G})$ gravity, where $\mathcal{G}$ is the \emph{Gauss-Bonnet} topological invariant. Specifically, by the so-called Noether Symmetry Approach, we select $f(\mathcal{G})\simeq \mathcal{G}^k$ power-law models where $k$ is a real number. In particular, the case $k = 1/2$ for $n=4$ results equivalent to General Relativity showing that we do not need to impose the action $R+f(\mathcal{G})$ to reproduce the Einstein theory. As a further result, de Sitter solutions are recovered in the case where $f(\mathcal{G})$ is non-minimally coupled to a sc…
We discuss the cosmological reconstruction in modified Gauss-Bonnet and F(R) gravities. Two alternative representations of the action (with and without auxiliary scalar) are considered. The approximate description of deceleration-acceleration transition cosmologies is reconstructed. It is shown that cosmological solution containing Big Bang and Big Rip singularities may be reconstructed only using the representation with the auxiliary field. The analytical description of the deceleration-acceleration transition cosmology in modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity is demonstrated to be impossible at suff…
We set up an Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory in four dimensions, based on the recent formulation of pure gravity with extra dimensions of vanishing metrical length [1]. In absence of torsion, the effective field equations depend only on the four-metric, reflecting a quadratic curvature nonlinearity but no higher than second order derivatives. In contrast with recent proposals to obtain 4dEGB theories through a singular rescaling of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling, this formalism requires no (classical) regularization of divergences and is inequivalent to Horndeski gravity, while being generally covaria…
In this paper, we show that the physical information given by conserved charges for asymptotically AdS spacetimes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet AdS gravity is encoded in the electric part of the Weyl tensor. This result generalizes the conformal mass definition by Ashtekar-Magnon-Das (AMD) to a gravity theory with a Gauss-Bonnet term. This proof makes use of the Noether charges obtained from an action renormalized by the addition of counterterms which depend on the extrinsic curvature (Kounterterms). If the asymptotic fall-off behaviour of the Weyl tensor is same as the one considered in the AMD me…
We study all four types of finite-time future singularities emerging in late-time accelerating (effective quintessence/phantom) era from $\mathcal{F}(R,G)$-gravity, where $R$ and $G$ are the Ricci scalar and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant, respectively. As an explicit example of $\mathcal{F}(R,G)$-gravity, we also investigate modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity, so-called $F(G)$-gravity. In particular, we reconstruct the $F(G)$-gravity and $\mathcal{F}(R,G)$-gravity models where accelerating cosmologies realizing the finite-time future singularities emerge. Furthermore, we discuss a possible way to cure…
We study a theory of gravity of the form $f(\mathcal{G})$ where $\mathcal{G}$ is the Gauss-Bonnet topological invariant without considering the standard Einstein-Hilbert term as common in the literature, in arbitrary $(d+1)$ dimensions. The approach is motivated by the fact that, in particular conditions, the Ricci curvature scalar can be easily recovered and then a pure $f(\cal G)$ gravity can be considered a further generalization of General Relativity like $f(R)$ gravity. Searching for Noether symmetries, we specify the functional forms invariant under point transformations in a static and …
In this work we shall study Einstein Gauss-Bonnet theories and we investigate when these can have their gravitational wave speed equal to the speed of light, which is unity in natural units, thus becoming compatible with the striking event GW170817. We demonstrate how this is possible and we show that if the scalar coupling to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant is constrained to satisfy a differential equation, the gravitational wave speed becomes equal to one. Accordingly, we investigate the inflationary phenomenology of the resulting restricted Einstein Gauss-Bonnet model, by assuming that the slow-…
In this paper we propose and extensively study mimetic $f({\cal G})$ modified gravity models, with various scenarios of cosmological evolution, with or without extra matter fluids. The easiest formulation is based on the use of Lagrange multiplier constraint. In certain versions of this theory, it is possible to realize accelerated expansion of the Universe or even unified evolution which includes inflation with dark energy, and at the same time in the same theoretical framework, dark matter is described by the theory. This is achieved by the re-parametrization of the metric tensor, which intr…
A finite action principle for Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet AdS gravity is presented. The boundary term, which is different for even and odd dimensions, is a functional of the boundary metric, intrinsic curvature and extrinsic curvature. For even dimensions, the boundary term corresponds to the maximal Chern form of the spacetime, and the asymptotic AdS condition for the curvature suffices for the well-posedness of this action. For odd dimensions, the action is stationary under a boundary condition on the variation of the extrinsic curvature. The background-independent Noether charges associated to as…
We discuss an extended Teleparallel gravity models comprising functions of scalar invariants constructed by torsion, torsion Gauss-Bonnet and boundary terms. We adopt the Noether Symmetry Approach to select the functional forms, the first integrals and, eventually, the exact solutions of the dynamics in the context of flat Friedman-Robertson-Walker cosmology. Standard perfect fluid matter, minimally coupled to geometry, is considered. Several physically consistent models are derived with related exact solutions.
The string $α^\prime$-correction to the usual Einstein action comprises a Gauss-Bonnet integrand multiplied by non-trivial functions of the modulus field $χ$ and/or the dilaton field $ϕ$. We discuss how the presence of such terms in the four dimensional effective action can explain several novel phenomena, such as a four-dimensional flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe undergoing a cosmic inflation at the early epoch, as well as a cosmic acceleration at late times. The model predicts, during inflation, spectra of both density perturbations and gravitational waves that may fall well within …
We compare predictions for the spectral index and tensor-scalar ratio in models of patch inflation with the WMAP three year data. There are three cases of these models of inflation, which arise in the Gauss-Bonnet braneworld scenario: Gauss-Bonnet (GB), Randall-Sundrum (RS), and 4D general relativity (GR). We consider the large-field potential $V \propto ϕ^p$ in both commutative and noncommutative spacetimes, and find that in the cases of the GB and GR patch cosmologies, the quadratic potential is observationally favored, while the quartic potential is ruled out in most patches. Strong noncomm…
In this paper we address two important issues which could affect reaching the exponential and Kasner asymptotes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet cosmologies -- spatial curvature and anisotropy in both three- and extra-dimensional subspaces. In the first part of the paper we consider cosmological evolution of spaces being the product of two isotropic and spatially curved subspaces. It is demonstrated that the dynamics in $D=2$ (the number of extra dimensions) and $D \geqslant 3$ is different. It was already known that for the $Λ$-term case there is a regime with "stabilization" of extra dimensions, whe…
In bigravity, when taking into account the potential existence of matter fields minimally coupled to the second gravitation sector, the dynamics of our Universe depends on some matter that cannot be observed in a direct way. In this paper, we assume the existence of a Noether symmetry in bigravity cosmologies in order to constrain the dynamics of that matter. By imposing this assumption we obtain cosmological models with interesting phenomenology. In fact, considering that our universe is filled with standard matter and radiation, we show that the existence of a Noether symmetry implies that e…
We naturally extend the theory of gravity with a conformally coupled scalar field by only requiring conformal invariance of the scalar field equation of motion and not of the action. The classically extended theory incorporates a scalar-Gauss-Bonnet sector and has second-order equations of motion, belonging to the Horndeski class. Remarkably, the theory features a purely geometrical field equation that allows for closed-form black hole solutions and cosmologies to be easily found. These solutions permit investigations of in-vogue scalar-Gauss-Bonnet corrections to the gravitational action with…
For the description of the Universe expansion, compatible with observational data, a model of modified gravity - Lovelock gravity with dilaton - is investigated. D-dimensional space with 3- and (D-4)-dimensional maximally symmetric subspaces is considered. Space without matter and space with perfect fluid are under test. In various forms of the theory under way (third order without dilaton and second order - Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity - with dilaton and without it) stationary, power-law, exponential and exponent-of-exponent form cosmological solutions are obtained. Last two forms include so…
The scale factor duality is a symmetry of dilaton gravity which is known to lead to pre-big-bang cosmologies. A conformal time version of the scale factor duality (SFD) was recently implemented as a UV/IR symmetry between decelerated and accelerated phases of the post-big-bang evolution within Einstein gravity coupled to a scalar field. The problem investigated in the present paper concerns the employment of the conformal time SFD methods to the construction of pre-big-bang and cyclic extensions of these models. We demonstrate that each big-bang model gives rise to two qualitatively different …
Motivated by string/M-theory predictions that scalar field couplings with the Gauss-Bonnet invariant, G, are essential in the appearance of non-singular early time cosmologies, we discuss the viability of an interesting alternative gravitational theory, namely, modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity, and present the viability bounds arising from the energy conditions. In particular, we consider a specific realistic form of f(G) analyzed in the literature that accounts for the late-time cosmic acceleration and that has been found to cure the finite-time future singularities present in the dark energy mo…
We propose to use a model-independent criterion based on first integrals of motion, due to Noether symmetries of the equations of motion, in order to classify the dark energy models in the context of scalar field (quintessence or phantom) FLRW cosmologies. In general, the Noether symmetries play an important role in physics because they can be used to simplify a given system of differential equations as well as to determine the integrability of the system. The Noether symmetries are computed for nine distinct accelerating cosmological scenarios that contain a homogeneous scalar field associate…
