In this paper, we study the phase space of cosmological models in the context of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory. More specifically, we consider a generalized dynamical system that encapsulates the main features of the theory and for the cases that this is rendered autonomous, we analyze its equilibrium points and stable and unstable manifolds corresponding to several distinct cosmological evolutions. As we demonstrate, the phase space is quite rich and contains invariant structures, which dictate the conditions under which the theory may be valid and viable in describing the evolution Universe during different phases. It is proved that a stable equilibrium point and two invariant manifolds leading to the fixed point, have both physical meaning and restrict the physical aspects of such a rich in structure modified theory of gravity. More important we prove the existence of a heteroclinic orbit which drives the evolution of the system to a stable fixed point. However, while on the fixed point the Friedman constraint corresponding to a flat Universe is satisfied, the points belonging to the heteroclinic orbit do not satisfy the Friedman constraint. We discuss the origin of this intriguing issue in some detail.
Non-local gravity cosmologies are considered under the standard of Noether Symmetry Approach. In particular, we focus on non-local theories whose gravitational actions depend on curvature and Gauss-Bonnet scalar invariants. Specific functional forms of the related point-like Lagrangians are selected by Noether symmetries and we solve the corresponding field equations finding out exact cosmological solutions.
We consider (thin) braneworlds with conical singularities in six-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with a bulk cosmological constant. The Gauss-Bonnet term is necessary in six dimensions for including non-trivial brane matter. We show that this model for axially symmetric bulks does not possess isotropic braneworld cosmological solutions.
We study cosmological solutions in the low-energy effective heterotic string theory, which is the Einstein gravity with Gauss-Bonnet term and the dilaton. We show that the field equations are cast into an autonomous system for flat internal and external spaces, and derive all the fixed points in the system. We also examine the time evolution of the solutions and whether the solutions can give (transient) accelerated expansion of our four-dimensional space in the Einstein frame.
Models with a scalar field coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet Lagrangian appear naturally from Kaluza-Klein compactifications of pure higher-dimensional gravity. We study linear, cosmological perturbations in the limits of weak coupling and slow-roll, and derive simple expressions for the main observable sub-horizon quantities: the anisotropic stress factor, the time-dependent gravitational constant, and the matter perturbation growth factor. Using present observational data, and assuming slow-roll for the dark energy field, we find that the fraction of energy density associated with the coupled Gaus…
Cyclic universes with bouncing solutions are candidates for solving the big bang initial singularity problem. Here we seek bouncing solutions in a modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity theory, of the type $R+f(G)$, where $R$ is the Ricci scalar, $G$ is the Gauss-Bonnet term, and $f$ some function of it. In finding such a bouncing solution we resort to a technique that reduces the order of the differential equations of the $R+f(G)$ theory to second order equations. As general relativity is a theory whose equations are of second order, this order reduction technique enables one to find solutions which a…
We develop a Gauss-Bonnet extension of Loop Quantum Cosmology, by introducing holonomy corrections in modified $F(\mathcal{G})$ theories of gravity. Within the context of our formalism, we provide a perturbative expansion in the critical density, a parameter characteristic of Loop Quantum Gravity theories, and we result in having leading order corrections to the classical $F(\mathcal{G})$ theories of gravity. After extensively discussing the formalism, we present a reconstruction method that makes possible to find the Loop Quantum Cosmology corrected $F(\mathcal{G})$ theory that can realize va…
The modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity can be motivated by a number of physical reasons, including: the uniqueness of a gravitational Lagrangian in four and higher dimensions and the leading order $α^\prime$ corrections in superstring theory. Such an effective theory of scalar-tensor gravity has been modeled in the recent past to explain both the initial cosmological singularity problem and the observationally supported cosmological perturbations. Here I present an overview of the recent developments in the use of modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity to explain current observations, touching on key cosmol…
We consider a physically viable cosmological model that has a field dependent Gauss-Bonnet coupling in its effective action, in addition to a standard scalar field potential. The presence of such terms in the four dimensional effective action gives rise to several novel effects, such as a four dimensional flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe undergoing a cosmic inflation at early epoch, as well as a cosmic acceleration at late times. The model predicts, during inflation, spectra of both density perturbations and gravitational waves that may fall well within the experimental bounds. Further…
We extend the covariant analysis of the brane cosmological evolution in order to take into account, apart from a general matter content and an induced-gravity term on the brane, a Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk. The gravitational effect of the bulk matter on the brane evolution can be described in terms of the total bulk mass as measured by a bulk observer at the location of the brane. This mass appears in the effective Friedmann equation through a term characterized as generalized dark radiation that induces mirage effects in the evolution. We discuss the normal and self-accelerating branches …
We investigate the stability against inhomogeneous perturbations and the appearance of ghost modes in Gauss-Bonnet gravitational theories with a non-minimally coupled scalar field, which can be regarded as either the dilaton or a compactification modulus in the context of string theory. Through cosmological linear perturbations we extract four no-ghost and two sub-luminal constraint equations, written in terms of background quantities, which must be satisfied for consistency. We also argue that, for a general action with quadratic Riemann invariants, homogeneous and inhomogeneous perturbations…
Dark energy cosmologies with an equation of state parameter $w$ less than -1 are often found to violate the null energy condition and show unstable behaviour. A solution to this problem may require the existence of a consistent effective theory that violates the null energy condition only momentarily and does not develop any instabilities or other pathological features for a late time cosmology. A model which incorporates a dynamical scalar field $ϕ$ coupled to the quadratic Riemann invariant of the Gauss-Bonnet form is a viable proposal. Such an effective theory is shown to admit nonsingular …
We first illustrate on a simple example how, in existing brane cosmological models, the connection of a 'bulk' region to its mirror image creates matter on the 'brane'. Next, we present a cosmological model with no $Z_2$ symmetry which is a spherical symmetric 'shell' separating two metrically different 5-dimensional anti-de Sitter regions. We find that our model becomes Friedmannian at late times, like present brane models, but that its early time behaviour is very different: the scale factor grows from a non-zero value at the big bang singularity. We then show how the Israel matching conditi…
The (n +1)-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) model is considered. For diagonal cosmological metrics, the equations of motion are written as a set of Lagrange equations with the effective Lagrangian containing two "minisuperspace" metrics on R^n: a 2-metric of pseudo-Euclidean signature and a Finslerian 4-metric proportional to the n-dimensional Berwald-Moor 4-metric. For the case of the "pure" Gauss-Bonnet model, two exact solutions are presented, those with power-law and exponential dependences of the scale factors (w.r.t. the synchronous time variable). (The power-law solution was cons…
We study accelerating cosmological solutions of a general class of non-linear gravities which depend on Gauss-Bonnet and other higher derivative invariants. To achieve this goal a local formulation with auxiliary scalars for arbitrary higher-derivative non-local gravity is developed. It is demonstrated that non-local Gauss-Bonnet gravity can be reduced, in the local formulation, to a model of string-inspired scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. A natural unification, in the theory here developed, of the early-time inflation epoch with a late-time acceleration stage can also be realized.
We study a model of scalar field with kinetic terms non-minimally coupled to to the curvature, and the scalar field coupled to the Gauss Bonnet 4-dimensional invariant. A variety of solutions are found, giving rise to different cosmological scenarios. A unified description of early time matter (radiation) dominance with transitions to late time quintessence and phantom phases have been made. Among others, we found solutions unifying asymptotically the early power law behavior and late time cosmological constant. Solutions of Chaplygin gas and generalized Chaplygin gas cosmologies have also bee…
We analytically derive the covariant form of the Riemann (curvature) tensor for homogeneous Metric-Affine Cosmologies. That is, we present, in a Cosmological setting, the most general covariant form of the full Riemann tensor including also its non-Riemannian pieces which are associated to spacetime torsion and non-metricity. Having done so we also compute a list of the curvature tensor by-products such as Ricci tensor, homothetic curvature, Ricci scalar, Einstein tensor etc. Finally we derive the generalized Metric-Affine version of the usual Gauss-Bonnet density in this background and demons…
A scalar-tensor model with Gauss-Bonnet and non-minimal kinetic couplings is considered, in which ghost modes are eliminated via a Lagrange multiplier constraint. A reconstruction procedure is deviced for the scalar potential and Lagrange multiplier, valid for any given cosmological scenario. In particular, inflationary and dark energy cosmologies of different types (power-law, Little-Rip, de Sitter, quasi de Sitter) are reconstructed in such models. It is shown that, for various choices of the kinetic coupling terms, it is possible to obtain a viable inflationary phenomenology compatible with…
We study holographic superconductors in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We consider two particular backgrounds: a $d$-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black hole and a Gauss-Bonnet-AdS soliton. We discuss in detail the effects that the mass of the scalar field, the Gauss-Bonnet coupling and the dimensionality of the AdS space have on the condensation formation and conductivity. We also study the ratio $ω_g/T_c $ for various masses of the scalar field and Gauss-Bonnet couplings.
We propose a boundary term to the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet action for gravity, which is constructed as the dimensional continuation of the Chern-Weil theorem, and such that the extremization of the full action yields the equations of motion when Dirichlet boundary conditions are imposed. When translated into tensorial language, this boundary term is the generalization to this theory of the Katz boundary term and vector for general relativity. The construction allows to deal with a general background and includes the Gibbons-Hawking-Myers boundary term as a special case, when the background is tak…
We derive the Lichnerowicz equation in the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet term. Using the modified Lichnerowicz equation we study the metric perturbations of Gauss-Bonnet black strings in Codimension-2 Braneworlds.
We investigate the Gauss-Bonnet dark energy model and its deformed version on Hořava-Lifshitz cosmology, which belongs to the class of cosmologies obtained from the so-called projectable version of Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. In particular, we investigate the bulk/boundary interaction in this scenario through the $Q$ function, which we interpret as a measure of the energy transference between the bulk and the spacetime boundary. Then we discuss whether the thermal equilibrium will be stable or not, once it is reached, and the validity of the generalized second law. We show that the $Q$ function c…
To ensure the existence of a well defined linearized gravitational wave equation, we show that the spacetimes in the so-called "Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in four dimension" have to be locally conformally flat.
We discuss a new extended gravity model in ordinary $D=4$ spacetime dimensions, where an additional term in the action involving Gauss-Bonnet topological density is included without the need to couple it to matter fields unlike the case of ordinary D=4 Gauss-Bonnet gravity models. Avoiding the Gauss-Bonnet density becoming a total derivative is achieved by employing the formalism of metric-independent non-Riemannian spacetime volume-forms. The non-Riemannian volume element triggers dynamically the Gauss-Bonnet scalar to become an arbitrary integration constant on-shell. We describe in some det…
Using Noether's identities, we define a superpotential with respect to a background for the Einstein Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity. As an example, we show that its associated conserved charge yields the mass-energy of a D-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet black hole in an anti-de Sitter spacetime.
We study the bending of light in the space-time of black holes in four-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity, recently proposed by Glavan and Lin \cite{Glavan}. Using Rindler-Ishak method, the effect of Gauss-Bonnet coupling on the bending angle is studied. We show that a positive Gauss-Bonnet coupling gives a negative contribution to the Schwarzschild-de Sitter deflection angle, as one would expect.
We study charged black hole solutions in 4-dimensional (4D) Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell theory to the linearized perturbation level. We first compute the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio. We then demonstrate how bulk causal structure analysis imposes a upper bound on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant in the AdS space. Causality constrains the value of Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α_{GB}$ to be bounded by $α_{GB}\leq 0$ as $D\rightarrow 4$.
In this paper we have analytically investigated holographic superconductors in four dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity background. Recently the novel four dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity has been formulated by rescaling the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α\rightarrow \fracα{d-4}$ and taking the limit $d\rightarrow 4$, and this predicts several interesting new features. To know the effect of the curvature correction on the $(2+1)$-dimensional superconductors, we have consider the $3+1$-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. Using the Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue approach, th…
Accelerating vacua with maximally symmetric, but not necessarily spherical, sections for Einstein and Gauss-Bonnet gravities in generic dimensions are obtained. The acceleration parameter has the effect of shifting the cosmological constants in Einstein gravity, whereas in Gauss-Bonnet gravity the effective cosmological constants remain the same in the presence of acceleration as in the case without acceleration.
The topological classification of critical points of black holes in 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity coupled to Born-Infeld theory is investigated. Considered independently, Born-infeld corrections to the Einstein action alter the topological charge of critical points of the charged AdS black hole system, whereas the Gauss-Bonnet corrections do not. For the combined system though, the total topological charge of the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory is unaltered in the presence of Born-Infeld coupling.
We discuss the formation of scalar hair on Gauss-Bonnet solitons and black holes in 5-dimensional Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space-time. We present new results on the static case and point out further details. We find that the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet term has an influence on the pattern of soliton solutions for small enough values of the electric charge. We also discuss rotating Gauss-Bonnet black holes with and without scalar hair.
We propose a new model of $D=4$ Gauss-Bonnet gravity. To avoid the usual property of the integral over the standard $D=4$ Gauss-Bonnet scalar becoming a total derivative term, we employ the formalism of metric-independent non-Riemannian spacetime volume elements which makes the D=4 Gauss-Bonnet action term non-trivial without the need to couple it to matter fields unlike the case of ordinary D=4 Gauss-Bonnet gravity models. The non-Riemannian volume element dynamically triggers the Gauss-Bonnet scalar to be an arbitrary integration constant M on-shell, which in turn has several interesting cos…
We construct generalizations of the D=5 Kerr black string by including higher curvature corrections to the gravity action in the form of the Gauss-Bonnet density. These uniform black strings satisfy a generalised Smarr relation and share the basic properties of the Einstein gravity solutions. However, they exist only up to a maximal value of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant, which depends on the solutions' mass and angular momentum.
We study the Wilson line response in the holographic superconducting phase transitions in Gauss-Bonnet gravity. In the black brane background case, the Little-Parks periodicity is independent of the Gauss-Bonnet parameter, while in the AdS soliton case, there is no evidence for the Little-Parks periodicity. We further study the impact of the Gauss-Bonnet term on the holographic phase transitions quantitatively. The results show that such quantum corrections can effectively affect the occurrence of the phase transitions and the response to the Wilson line.
The Kerr-type solutions of the five-dimensional Einstein and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet equations look pretty similar when written in Kerr-Schild form. However the Myers-Perry spacetime is circular whereas the rotating solution of the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory is not. We explore some consequences of this difference in particular regarding the (non) existence of Boyer-Lindquist-type coordinates and the extension of the manifold.
We compute the mass and angular momenta of rotating anti-de Sitter spacetimes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity using a superpotential derived from standard Noether identities. The calculation relies on the fact that the Einstein and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet vacuum equations are the same when linearized on maximally symmetric backgrounds and uses the recently discovered D-dimensional Kerr-anti-de Sitter solutions to Einstein's equations.
We treat spherically symmetric black holes in Gauss-Bonnet gravity by imposing boundary conditions on fluctuating metric on the horizon. Obtained effective two-dimensional theory admits Virasoro algebra near the horizon. This enables, with the help of Cardy formula, evaluation of the number of states. Obtained results coincide with the known macroscopic expression for the entropy of black holes in Gauss-Bonnet gravity.
We employ the variational method for the Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem to analytically study the phase transition between the holographic insulator and superconductor in the Gauss-Bonnet gravity. By investigating the s-wave and p-wave holographic insulator/superconductor models, we find that this analytic method is more effective to obtain the analytic results on the condensation and the critical phenomena in the AdS soliton background in Gauss-Bonnet gravity. Our analytic result can be used to back up the numerical computations in the AdS soliton with Gauss-Bonnet correction.
We investigate the presence of a black hole black string phase transition in Einstein Gauss Bonnet (EGB) gravity in the large dimension limit. The merger point is the static spacetime connecting the black string phase with the black hole phase. We consider several ranges of the Gauss-Bonnet parameter. We find that there is a range when the Gauss-Bonnet corrections are subordinate to the Einstein gravity terms in the large dimension limit, and yet the merger point geometry does not approach a black hole away from the neck. We cannot rule out a topology changing phase transition as argued by Kol…
In this paper, we investigate the photon sphere, shadow radius and quasinormal modes of a four-dimensional charged Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole. The perturbation of a massless scalar field in the black hole's background is adopted. The quasinormal modes are gotten by the $6th$ order WKB approximation approach and shadow radius, respectively. When the value of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant increase, the values of the real parts of the quasinormal modes increase and those of the imaginary parts decrease. The coincidence degrees of quasinormal modes derived by the two approaches increase…
We study the greybody factors of the scalar fields in spherically symmetric Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-de Sitter black holes in higher dimensions. We derive the greybody factors analytically for both minimally and non-minimally coupled scalar fields. Moreover, we discuss the dependence of the greybody factor on various parameters including the angular momentum number, the non-minimally coupling constant, the spacetime dimension, the cosmological constant and the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient in detail. We find that the non-minimal coupling may suppress the Hawking radiation, while the Gauss-Bonnet coupl…
It is known that Gauss-Bonnet terms in higher dimensional gravity can produce an effective cosmological constant. We add extra examples to this picture by presenting explicitly two branches of accelerating vacuum solutions to the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravities with a bare cosmological constant in 5 and 6 dimensions. Both branches of solutions are of constant curvature and the effective cosmological constants are independent of the acceleration parameter. One branch (the "-" branch) of the solutions is well defined in the limit when the Gauss-Bonnet parameter approaches zero, in which case the…
In this paper we consider the holographic DC and Hall conductivity in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton in Gauss-Bonnet gravity with momentum dissipation. We analytically derived the DC conductivity and Hall conductivity from the black horizon data, and found that the conductivities are independent on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling. We also used the entropy function formalism to get the conductivities in terms of the charge of the black hole, even without knowing the explicit black hole solutions.
We study general models for holographic superconductors in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We find that different values of Gauss-Bonnet correction term and model parameters can determine the order of phase transitions and critical exponents of second-order phase transitions. Moreover we find that the size and strength of the conductivity coherence peak can be controlled. The ratios $ω_g/Tc$ for various model parameters have also been examined.
We make an extensive study of evolution of gravitational perturbations of D-dimensional black holes in Gauss-Bonnet theory. There is an instability at higher multi-poles $\ell$ and large Gauss-Bonnet coupling $α$ for $D= 5, 6$, which is stabilized at higher $D$. Although small negative gap of the effective potential for scalar type of gravitational perturbations, exists for higher $D$ and whatever $α$, it does not lead to any instability.
We summarize our proof that the "Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity in Four-Dimensional Spacetime" introduced in Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 081301 (2020) does not have consistent field equations, as such the theory does not exist. The proof is given in both the metric and the first order formalisms.
We argue that the Weyl coordinates and the rod-structure employed to construct static axisymmetric solutions in higher dimensional Einstein gravity can be generalized to the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory. As a concrete application of the general formalism, we present numerical evidence for the existence of static black ring solutions in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory in five spacetime dimensions. They approach asymptotically the Minkowski background and are supported against collapse by a conical singularity in the form of a disk. An interesting feature of these solutions is that the Gauss-Bonnet…
We investigate the shadows and photon spheres of the four-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet black hole with the static and infalling spherical accretions. We show that for both cases, the shadow and photon sphere are always present. The radii of the shadow and photon sphere are independent of the profiles of accretion for a fixed Gauss-Bonnet constant, implying that the shadow is a signature of the spacetime geometry and it is hardly influenced by accretion in this case. Because of the Doppler effect, the shadow of the infalling accretion is found to be darker than that of the static one. We also inves…
We study the greybody factor and power spectra of Hawking radiation for the minimally or nonminimally coupled scalar field with exact numerical method in spherically symmetric Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-de Sitter black hole spacetime. The effects of scalar coupling constant, angular momentum number of scalar, spacetime dimension, cosmological constant and Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant on the Hawking radiation are studied in detail. Specifically, the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant always increases the greybody factor in the entire energy regime. Different from the case of Schwarzschild-de Sitter bl…
We present effective gravitational equations at low energies in a $Z_2$-symmetric braneworld with the Gauss-Bonnet term. Our derivation is based on the geometrical projection approach, and we solve iteratively the bulk geometry using the gradient expansion scheme. Although the original field equations are quite complicated due to the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet term, our final result clearly has the form of the Einstein equations plus correction terms, which is simple enough to handle. As an application, we consider homogeneous and isotropic cosmology on the brane. We also comment on the holo…
We set up an Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory in four dimensions, based on the recent formulation of pure gravity with extra dimensions of vanishing metrical length [1]. In absence of torsion, the effective field equations depend only on the four-metric, reflecting a quadratic curvature nonlinearity but no higher than second order derivatives. In contrast with recent proposals to obtain 4dEGB theories through a singular rescaling of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling, this formalism requires no (classical) regularization of divergences and is inequivalent to Horndeski gravity, while being generally covaria…
We obtain rotating black hole solutions to the novel 3D Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity recently proposed. These solutions generalize the BTZ metric and are not of constant curvature. They possess an ergoregion and outer horizon, but do not have an inner horizon. We present their basic properties and show that they break the universality of thermodynamics present for their static charged counterparts, whose properties we also discuss. Extending our considerations to higher dimensions, we also obtain novel 4D Gauss-Bonnet rotating black strings.
The stability under radial and vertical perturbations of circular orbits associated to particles orbiting a spherically symmetric center of attraction is study in the context of the n-dimensional: Newtonian theory of gravitation, Einstein's general relativity, and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravitation. The presence of a cosmological constant is also considered. We find that this constant as well as the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant are crucial to have stability for $n>4$.
We analytically study the holographic superconductors for Born-Infeld electrodynamics in Gauss-Bonnet gravity with backreactions. We note that the analytic method is still powerful for this complex system and the results obtained by the analytical and numerical computations are consistent. We find that the critical temperature decreases with the increase of the backreactions, Gauss-Bonnet, and Born-Infeld parameters, which means that increase of the strength of these effects will make the scalar hair harder to form. Furthermore, the Gauss-Bonnet factor modifies the critical temperature more si…
We construct sequences of rapidly rotating neutron stars in dilatonic Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory, employing two equations of state for the nuclear matter. We analyze the dependence of the physical properties of these neutron stars on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling strength. For a given equation of state we determine the physically relevant domain of rapidly rotating neutron stars, which is delimited by the set of neutron stars rotating at the Kepler limit, the set of neutron stars along the secular instability line, and the set of static neutron stars. As compared to Einstein gravity, the presenc…
We revisit the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory in view of the GW170817 event, which compels that the gravitational wave speed is equal to $c_T^2=1$ in natural units. We use an alternative approach compared to one previous work of ours, which enables us to express all the slow-roll indices and the observational indices as functions of the scalar field. Using our formalism we investigate if the Swampland criteria are satisfied for the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory and as we demonstrate, the Swampland criteria are satisfied for quite general forms of the potential and the Gauss-Bonnet coupling functi…
We obtain a general five dimensional (5D) quasispherical solutions of irrotational dust in Einstein gravity with the Gauss-Bonnet combination of quadratic curvature terms. These solutions are generalization, to Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, of the 5D quasispherical Szkeres like solutions in general relativity. It is found that the collapse proceed in the same way as in the analogous spherical collapse, i.e., there exists a regular initial data such that the collapse proceed to form naked singularities violating cosmic censorship conjecture. The effect of Gauss-Bonnet quadratic curvature terms…
In this paper we show that electrically charged black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity suffer from a superradiant instability. It is triggered by a charged scalar field that fulfills Dirichlet boundary conditions at a mirror located outside the horizon. As in General Relativity, the unstable modes exist provided the mirror is located beyond a critical radius, making the instability a long wavelength one. We explore the effects of the Gauss-Bonnet corrections on the critical radius and find evidence that the critical radius decreases as the Gauss-Bonnet coupling $α$ increases. Due to the,…
