We study accelerating cosmological solutions of a general class of non-linear gravities which depend on Gauss-Bonnet and other higher derivative invariants. To achieve this goal a local formulation with auxiliary scalars for arbitrary higher-derivative non-local gravity is developed. It is demonstrated that non-local Gauss-Bonnet gravity can be reduced, in the local formulation, to a model of string-inspired scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. A natural unification, in the theory here developed, of the early-time inflation epoch with a late-time acceleration stage can also be realized.
We construct a solution satisfying initial conditions for accelerating cosmologies from string/M-theory. Gowdy symmetric spacetimes with a positive potential are considered. Also, a global existence theorem for the spacetimes is shown.
We study aspects of the accelerating cosmologies obtained from the compactification of vacuum solution and S2-branes of superstring/M theories. Parameter dependence of the resulting expansion of our universe and internal space is examined for all cases. We find that accelerating expansions are obtained also from spherical internal spaces, albeit the solution enters into contracting phase eventually. The relation between the models of SM2- and SD2-branes are also discussed, and a potential problem with SD2-brane model is noted.
It is demonstrated by explicit solutions of the (4+n)-dimensional vacuum Einstein equations that accelerating cosmologies in the Einstein conformal frame can be obtained by a time-dependent compactification of string/M-theory, even in the case that internal dimensions are Ricci-flat, provided one includes one or more geometric twists. Such acceleration is transient. When both compact hyperbolic internal spaces and geometric twists are included, however, the period of accelerated expansion may be made arbitrarily large.
We point out that the recently proposed model of a flat 4-dimensional universe with accelerated expansion in string/M-theory is a special case of time-dependent solutions that the author found under the name of ``S-branes.'' We also show that similar accelerating models can be obtained from S-branes if the internal space is chosen to be hyperbolic or flat spaces.
We give a simple interpretation of the recent solutions for cosmologies with a transient accelerating phase obtained from compactification in hyperbolic manifolds, or from S-brane solutions of string/M-theory. In the four-dimensional picture, these solutions correspond to bouncing the radion field off its exponential potential. Acceleration occurs at the turning point, when the radion stops and the potential energy momentarily dominates. The virtues and limitations of these approaches become quite transparent in this interpretation.
Motivated by recent accelerating cosmological model, we derive the solutions to vacuum Einstein equation in $(d+1)$-dimensional Minkowski space with $n$-dimensional hyperbolic manifold. The conditions of accelerating expansion are given in such a set up.
We review the recent developments in obtaining accelerating cosmologies and/or inflation from higher-dimensional gravitational theories, in particular superstring theories in ten dimensions and M-theory in eleven dimensions. We first discuss why it is difficult to obtain inflationary behavior in the effective low-energy theories of superstring/M-theory, i. e. supergravity theories. We then summarize interesting solutions including S-branes that give rise to accelerating cosmologies and inflationary solutions in M-theory with higher order corrections. Other approaches to inflation in the string…
We study cosmological solutions in the low-energy effective heterotic string theory, which is the Einstein gravity with Gauss-Bonnet term and the dilaton. We show that the field equations are cast into an autonomous system for flat internal and external spaces, and derive all the fixed points in the system. We also examine the time evolution of the solutions and whether the solutions can give (transient) accelerated expansion of our four-dimensional space in the Einstein frame.
We construct an intersecting S-brane solution of 11-dimensional supergravity for which the contribution of the Chern-Simons term to the field equations is non-zero. After studying some of its properties, we consider three different compactifications (each with 3 separate subcases) of this system to 4-dimensions. Two of these give accelerating cosmologies, however their expansion factors are of order unity. We also find two static versions of this configuration and its dimensional reduction to type IIA theory.
The string $α^\prime$-correction to the usual Einstein action comprises a Gauss-Bonnet integrand multiplied by non-trivial functions of the modulus field $χ$ and/or the dilaton field $ϕ$. We discuss how the presence of such terms in the four dimensional effective action can explain several novel phenomena, such as a four-dimensional flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe undergoing a cosmic inflation at the early epoch, as well as a cosmic acceleration at late times. The model predicts, during inflation, spectra of both density perturbations and gravitational waves that may fall well within …
We study classical and quantum noncommutative cosmology with a Liouville-type scalar degree of freedom. The noncommutativity is imposed on the minisuperspace variables through a deformation of the Poisson algebra. In this paper, we investigate the effects of noncommutativity of minisuperspace variables on the accelerating behavior of the cosmic scale factor. The probability distribution in noncommutative quantum cosmology is also studied and we propose a novel candidate for interpretation of the probability distribution in terms of noncommutative arguments.
An exponential potential of the form $V\sim \exp(-2c ϕ/M_p)$ arising from the hyperbolic or flux compactification of higher-dimensional theories is of interest for getting short periods of accelerated cosmological expansions. Using a similar potential but derived for the combined case of hyperbolic-flux compactification, we study the four-dimensional flat (and open) FLRW cosmologies and give analytic (and numerical) solutions with exponential behavior of scale factors. We show that, for the M-theory motivated potentials, the cosmic acceleration of the universe can be eternal if the spatial cur…
A solution of the (4+n)-dimensional vacuum Einstein equations is found for which spacetime is compactified on a compact hyperbolic manifold of time-varying volume to a flat four-dimensional FLRW cosmology undergoing accelerated expansion in Einstein conformal frame. This shows that the `no-go' theorem forbidding acceleration in `standard' (time-independent) compactifications of string/M-theory does not apply to `cosmological' (time-dependent) hyperbolic compactifications.
It is known that there exist two different classes of time dependent solutions in the form of space-like (or S)-branes in the low energy M/string theory. Accelerating cosmologies are known to arise from S-branes in one class, but not in the other where the time-like holography in the dS/CFT type correspondence may be more transparent. We show how the accelerating cosmologies arise from S-branes in the other class. Although we do not get the de Sitter structure in the lowest order supergravity, the near `horizon' ($t\to 0$) limits of these S-branes are the generalized Kasner metric.
We show that any accelerating Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmology with equation of state w < -1/3 (and therefore not only a de Sitter stage with w =-1) exhibits three-dimensional conformal symmetry on future constant-time hypersurfaces. We also offer an alternative derivation of this result in terms of conformal Killing vectors and show that long wavelength comoving curvature perturbations of the perturbed FRW metric are just conformal Killing motions of the FRW background. We then extend theb boundary conformal symmetry to the bulk for accelerating cosmologies. Our findings indicate th…
We discuss the production and evolution of cosmological gravitons showing how the cosmological background affects their dynamics. Besides, the detection of cosmological gravitons could constitute an extremely important signature to discriminate among different cosmological models. Here we consider the cases of scalar-tensor gravity and $f(R)$ gravity where it is demonstrated the amplification of graviton amplitude changes if compared with General Relativity. Possible observational constraints are discussed.
We test if the latest Gold set of 182 SNIa or the combined "Platinum" set of 192 SNIa from the ESSENCE and Gold sets, in conjunction with the CMB shift parameter show a preference between the LambdaCDM model, three wCDM models, and the DGP model of modified gravity as an explanation for the current accelerating phase of the universe's expansion. We consider flat wCDM models with an equation of state w(a) that is (i) constant with scale factor $a$, (ii) varies as w(a)=w_0+w_a(1-a) for redshifts probed by supernovae but is fixed at -1 at earlier epochs and (iii) varies as w_0+w_a(1-a) since reco…
Within the theory of the ghost-free bigravity, we present the most general cosmological solution for which the physical metric is homogeneous and isotropic, while the second metric is inhomogeneous. The solution includes a matter source and exists for any values of the theory parameters. The physical metric describes a universe with the late time acceleration due to the effective cosmological term mimicked by the graviton mass. When perturbed, this universe should rest approximately homogeneous and isotropic in space regions small compared to the graviton Compton length. In the limit where the…
We present a systematic study of accelerating cosmologies obtained from M/string theory compactifications of hyperbolic spaces with time-varying volume. A set of vacuum solutions where the internal space is a product of hyperbolic manifolds is found to give qualitatively the same accelerating four-dimensional FLRW universe behavior as a single hyperbolic space. We also examine the possibility that our universe is a hyperbolic space and provide exact Milne type solutions, as well as intersecting S-brane solutions. When both the usual 4D spacetime and the m-dimensional internal space are hyperbo…
In the context of Horndeski cosmologies, we consider a dynamical adjustment mechanism able to screen any value of the vacuum energy of the matter fields leading to a fixed de Sitter geometry. Thus, we present the most general scalar-tensor cosmological models without higher than second order derivatives in the field equation that have a fixed spatially flat de Sitter critical point for any kind of material content or vacuum energy. These models allow us to understand the current accelerated expansion of the universe as the result of the evolution towards the critical point when it is an attrac…
We construct an eternally inflating spacelike brane world model. If the space dimension of the brane is three (SM2) or six (SM5) for M theory or four (SD3) for superstring theory, a time-dependent $n$-form field would supply a constant energy density and cause exponentially expansion of the spacelike brane. In these cases, the hyperbolic space perpendicular to the brane would not vary in size. In the other cases, however, the extra space would vary in size.
It is known that four-dimensional cosmologies exhibiting transient phases of acceleration can be obtained by compactifications of low-energy effective string or M-theory on time-varying manifolds. In the four-dimensional theory, the acceleration can be attributed to a quintessential scalar field with a positive effective potential. Recently, Townsend has conjectured that the potentials obtained by such compactifications cannot give rise to late-time accelerating universes which possess future event horizons. Such a `no-go' result would be desirable, since current string or M-theory seems unabl…
We investigate time dependent solutions (S-brane solutions) for product manifolds consisting of factor spaces where only one of them is non-Ricci-flat. Our model contains minimally coupled free scalar field as a matter source. We discuss a possibility of generating late time acceleration of the Universe. The analysis is performed in conformally related Brans-Dicke and Einstein frames. Dynamical behavior of our Universe is described by its scale factor. Since the scale factors of our Universe are described by different variables in both frames, they can have different dynamics. Indeed, we show …
We present the detailed derivation of the recently announced most general cosmological solution with homogeneous and isotropic metric in the ghost-free massive gravity theory. We use the standard parametrization of the theory in terms of the matrix square root, and then show how the same results are recovered within the tetrad formulation. The solution obtained includes the matter source, it exists for generic values of the theory parameters, and it describes a universe that can be spatially open, closed, or flat, and that shows the late time acceleration due to the effective cosmological term…
We point out that the solution of $(4+n)$-dimensional gravity coupled to the dilaton and an $n$-form field strength can give rise to a flat 4-dimensional universe (with a scale factor) of the type proposed recently under time dependent compactifications. The compact internal spaces could be hyperbolic, flat or spherical and the solution is identical to the space-like two brane or S2-brane. As has been shown previously for SM2 solution with a fixed field strength we show that for $n=7$ (where the dilaton is vanishing and with a general field strength), 6 the corresponding SM2 and SD2 solutions …
M-theory compactifies on a seven-dimensional time-dependent hyperbolic or flat space to a four-dimensional FLRW cosmology undergoing a period of accelerated expansion in Einstein conformal frame. The strong energy condition is violated by the scalar fields produced in the compactification, as is necessary to evade the no-go theorem for time-independent compactifications. The four-form field strength of eleven-dimensional supergravity smoothly switches on during the period of accelerated expansion in hyperbolic compactifications, whereas in flat compactifications, the three-form potential smoot…
We present a survey of the known cosmological and black hole solutions in ghost-free bigravity and massive gravity theories. These can be divided into three classes. First, there are solutions with proportional metrics, which are the same as in General Relativity with a cosmological term, which can be positive, negative or zero. Secondly, for spherically symmetric systems, there are solutions with non-bidiagonal metrics. The g-metric fulfills Einstein equations with a positive cosmological term and a matter source, while the f-metric is anti-de Sitter. The third class contains solutions with b…
We consider the space-like D$p$ brane solutions of type II string theories having isometries ISO$(p+1)$ $\times$ SO$(8-p,1)$. These are asymptotically flat solutions or in other words, the metrics become flat at the time scale $τ\gg τ_0$. On the other hand, when $τ\sim τ_0$, we get $(p+1)+1$ dimensional flat FLRWmetrics upon compactification on a $(8-p)$ dimensional hyperbolic space with time dependent radii. We show that the resultant $(p+1)+1$ dimensional metrics describe transient accelerating cosmologies for all $p$ from 1 to 6, i.e., from $(2+1)$ to $(7+1)$ space-time dimensions. We show …
We discuss the properties of homogeneous and isotropic flat cosmologies in which the present accelerating stage is powered only by the gravitationally induced creation of cold dark matter (CCDM) particles ($Ω_{m}=1$). For some matter creation rates proposed in the literature, we show that the main cosmological functions such as the scale factor of the universe, the Hubble expansion rate, the growth factor and the cluster formation rate are analytically defined. The best CCDM scenario has only one free parameter and our joint analysis involving BAO + CMB + SNe Ia data yields ${\tildeΩ}_{m}= 0.2…
We show how to derive several families of accelerating universe solutions to an Einstein-Aether gravity theory. These solutions provide possible descriptions of inflationary behaviour in the early universe and late-time cosmological acceleration.
In this paper we search for accelerating power-law solutions and ekpyrotic solutions within minimal and maximal four dimensional supergravity theories. We focus on the STU model for N=1 and on the new CSO(p,q,r) theories, which were recently obtained exploiting electromagnetic duality, for N=8. In the minimal case we find some new ekpyrotic solutions, while in the maximal case we find some new generic power-law solutions. We do not find any new accelerating solutions for these models.
We consider BTZ black holes and flat space cosmologies in generic higher derivative gravity theories in 2+1 dimensions. Our goal is to prove the match between the bulk Iyer-Wald entropy and the field theory entropy for various symmetry algebras (CFT$_2$, Warped CFT$_2$, BMS$_3$). We also discuss phase transitions in higher curvature theories, and argue that, in the flat case, there is strictly speaking no phase transition in the grand canonical ensemble.
We extend the covariant analysis of the brane cosmological evolution in order to take into account, apart from a general matter content and an induced-gravity term on the brane, a Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk. The gravitational effect of the bulk matter on the brane evolution can be described in terms of the total bulk mass as measured by a bulk observer at the location of the brane. This mass appears in the effective Friedmann equation through a term characterized as generalized dark radiation that induces mirage effects in the evolution. We discuss the normal and self-accelerating branches …
We review the accelerating (mainly, dark energy) cosmologies in modified gravity. Special attention is paid to cosmologies leading to finite-time future singularities in $F(R)$, $F(G)$ and $\mathcal{F}(R,G)$ modified gravities. The removal of the finite-time future singularities via addition of $R^2$-term which simultaneously unifies the early-time inflation with late-time acceleration is also briefly mentioned. Accelerating cosmology including the scenario unifying inflation with dark energy is considered in $F(R)$ gravity with Lagrange multipliers. In addition, we examine domain wall solutio…
A new class of accelerating cosmological models driven by a one-parameter version of the general Chaplygin-type equation of state is proposed. The simplified version is naturally obtained from causality considerations with basis on the adiabatic sound speed $v_S$ plus the observed accelerating stage of the universe. We show that very stringent constraints on the unique free parameter $α$ describing the simplified Chaplygin model can be obtained from a joint analysis involving the latest SNe type Ia data and the recent Sloan Digital Sky Survey measurement of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO). …
In our earlier paper [JHEP 0310 (2003) 058], we considered higher dimensional cosmological models with hyperbolic spaces. In particular the eternal accelerating expansion was obtained by studying small perturbation around the critical non-accelerated solution for $D > 10$. In this addendum, we show that there is also such a solution in the critical case $D = 10$.
We present a general slow-roll formalism within braneworld-motivated cosmologies with non-standard effective Friedmann equations. Full towers of parameters involving either the inflaton potential or the Hubble parameter are constructed and the dynamics of non-tachyonic and tachyonic fields are considered in detail; exact cosmological solutions and the inflationary attractor condition are provided. We compare scalar-driven and tachyon-driven accelerating eras through slow-roll correspondence and the observational imprint on early-universe structures.
We study the evolution of tensor metric fluctuations in a class of non-singular models based on the string effective action, by including in the perturbation equation the higher-derivative and loop corrections needed to regularise the background solutions. We discuss the effects of such higher-order corrections on the final graviton spectrum, and we compare the results of analytical and numerical computations.
We compute the cosmological reduction of general string theories, including bosonic, heterotic and type II string theory to order $α'^{3}$, i.e., with up to eight derivatives. To this end we refine recently introduced methods that allow one to bring the reduced theory in one dimension to a canonical form with only first-order time derivatives. The resulting theories are compatible with a continuous $O(d,d,\mathbb{R})$ invariance, which in turn fixes the B-field couplings.
A class of modified gravity, known as $f(R)$-gravity, has presently been applied to Cosmology as a realistic alternative to dark energy. In this paper we use the most recent Type-Ia Supernova (SNe Ia) data, the so-called \emph{Union} sample of 307 SNe Ia, to place bounds on a theory of the form $f(R)=R - β/R^n$ within the Palatini approach. Given the complementarity of SNe Ia data with other cosmological observables, a joint analysis with measurements of baryon acoustic oscillation peak and estimates of the {\rm CMB} shift parameter is also performed. We show that, for the allowed intervals of…
We study mimetic $F(R)$ gravity with potential and Lagrange multiplier constraint. In the context of these theories, we introduce a reconstruction technique which enables us to realize arbitrary cosmologies, given the Hubble rate and an arbitrarily chosen $F(R)$ gravity. We exemplify our method by realizing cosmologies that are in concordance with current observations (Planck data) and also well known bouncing cosmologies. The attribute of our method is that the $F(R)$ gravity can be arbitrarily chosen, so we can have the appealing features of the mimetic approach combined with the known featu…
Cosmologists today are confronted with the perplexing reality that the universe is currently accelerating in its expansion. Nevertheless, the nature of the fuel that drives today's cosmic acceleration is an open and tantalizing mystery. There exists the intriguing possibility that the acceleration is not the manifestation of yet another mysterious ingredient in the cosmic gas tank (dark energy), but rather our first real lack of understanding of gravity itself, and even possibly a signal that there might exist dimensions beyond that which we can currently observe. The braneworld model of Dvali…
We investigate the cosmology of a recently proposed deformation of Einstein gravity, emerging from quantum gravity heuristics. The theory is constructed to have de Sitter space as a vacuum solution, and thus to be relevant to the accelerating universe. However, this solution turns out to be unstable, and the true phase space of cosmological solutions is significantly more complex, displaying two late-time power-law attractors -- one accelerating and the other dramatically decelerating. It is also shown that non-accelerating cosmologies sit on a separatrix between the two basins of attraction o…
Modified $f(R)$ gravity in the Palatini approach has been presently applied to Cosmology as a realistic alternative to dark energy. In this concern, a number of authors have searched for observational constraints on several $f(R)$ gravity functional forms using mainly data of type Ia supenovae (SNe Ia), Cosmic Microwave Background ({\rm CMB}) radiation and Large Scale Structure ({\rm LSS}). In this paper, by considering a homogeneous and isotropic flat universe, we use determinations of the Hubble function $H(z)$, which are based on differential age method, to place bounds on the free paramete…
We study the background cosmology of two extensions of dRGT massive gravity. The first is variable mass massive gravity, where the fixed graviton mass of dRGT is replaced by the expectation value of a scalar field. We ask whether self-inflation can be driven by the self-accelerated branch of this theory, and we find that, while such solutions can exist for a short period, they cannot be sustained for a cosmologically useful time. Furthermore, we demonstrate that there generally exist future curvature singularities of the "big brake" form in cosmological solutions to these theories. The second …
In the framework of massive gravity with a de Sitter reference metric, we study homogeneous and isotropic solutions with positive spatial curvature. Remarkably, we find that bounces can occur when cosmological matter satisfies the strong energy condition, in contrast to what happens in classical general relativity. This is due to the presence in the Friedmann equations of additional terms, which depend on the scale factor and its derivatives and can be interpreted as an effective fluid. We present a detailed study of the system using a phase space analysis. After having identified the fixed po…
Recent progress seems to suggest that one must modify General Relativity (GR) to stably violate the null energy condition and avoid the cosmological singularity. However, with the higher-order derivative operators of scalar field (a subclass of the degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor theory), we show that at energies well below the Planck scale, fully stable nonsingular cosmologies can actually be implemented within GR.
As is known, in modified cosmological theories of gravity many of the cosmologies which could not be generated by standard Einstein gravity, can be consistently described by $F(R)$ theories. Using known reconstruction techniques, we investigate which $F(R)$ theories can lead to a Hubble parameter describing two types of cosmological bounces, the superbounce model, related to supergravity and non-supersymmetric models of contracting ekpyrosis and also the Loop Quantum Cosmology modified ekpyrotic model. Since our method is an approximate method, we investigate the problem at large and small cur…
We consider modified gravity which may describe the early-time inflation and/or late-time cosmic acceleration of the universe. In particular, we discuss the properties of $F(R)$, $F(G)$, string-inspired and scalar-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravities, including their FRW equations and fluid or scalar-tensor description. Simplest accelerating cosmologies are investigated and possibility of unified description of the inflation with dark energy is described. The cosmological reconstruction program which permits to get the requested universe evolution from modified gravity is developed. As some extensi…
Self-accelerating backgrounds in massive gravity provide an arena to explore the Cauchy problem for derivatively coupled fields that obey complex constraints which reduce the phase space degrees of freedom. We present here an algorithm based on the Kronecker form of a matrix pencil that finds all hidden constraints, for example those associated with derivatives of the equations of motion, and characteristic curves for any 1+1 dimensional system of linear partial differential equations. With the Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli decomposition of metric perturbations into angular momentum and parity states,…
We show that, in the presence of a string gas, simple higher-derivative modifications to the effective action for gravity can lead to bouncing and cyclic cosmological models. The modifications bound the expansion rate and avoid singularities at finite times. In these models the scale factors can have long loitering phases that solve the horizon problem. Adding a potential for the dilaton gives a simple realization of the pre-big bang scenario. Entropy production in the cyclic phase drives an eventual transition to a radiation-dominated universe. As a test of the Brandenberger-Vafa scenario, we…
Higher derivative terms are computed in the one-loop effective action governing the interactions of D3-branes, in two ways: (1) in a formalism with N=2 supersymmetry preserved off-shell, and (2) in the standard background field formalism, with only on-shell supersymmetry. It is shown that these calculations only agree using tree-level equations of motion. The off-shell supersymmetric calculation exhibits acceleration terms that appear in terms with four derivatives. These may imply disagreement at two-loop order between supergravity and Yang-Mills descriptions of D-brane dynamics.
Einstein's General theory of relativity permits spacetime singularities, where null geodesic congruences focus in the presence of matter, which satisfies an appropriate energy condition. In this paper, we provide a minimal defocusing condition for null congruences without assuming any Ansatz-dependent background solution. The two important criteria are: (1) an additional scalar degree of freedom, besides the massless graviton must be introduced into the spacetime; and (2) an infinite derivative theory of gravity is required in order to avoid tachyons or ghosts in the graviton propagator. In th…
