We study stealth black hole perturbations in shift symmetric kinetic gravity braiding and obtain its analogous Regge-Wheeler and Zerilli master equations for the odd and even parity sectors. We show that the nontrivial hair of static and spherically symmetric stealth black holes contributes only an additional source term to the even parity master equation. Furthermore, we derive exact solutions to the monopolar and dipolar perturbations and show that they are generally pathological non-gauge modes, or else reduce to the pure-gauge low-order multipoles of general relativity.
We derive all hairy stealth black holes in the most general second-order, shift symmetric, scalar-tensor theory with luminally propagating gravitational waves, often called kinetic gravity braiding. Our approach exploits an overlooked loophole in a recently obtained no-go statement which claims shift symmetry breaking to be necessary for stealth solutions to exist in kinetic gravity braiding. We highlight the essential role played by a covariantly constant kinetic density in obtaining these solutions. Lastly, we propose a parametrization of the theories based on the asymptotics of its stealth …
We study the self-tuning subclass of kinetic gravity braiding and obtain robust predictions on self-tuning and dynamics in the tadpole-free shift symmetric sector of the theory. In particular, we show inevitability of cosmic acceleration, prove the dynamical stability of this late-time asymptotic state, and derive ghost and gradient stability constraints on the self-tuning vacuum. We discuss the results concretely in the context of generalized cubic covariant Galileon theory and an exponential kinetic gravity braiding.
We revise the future fate of a group of scalar-tensor theories known as kinetic gravity braiding models. As it is well-known, these theories can safely drive the expansion of the universe towards a future de Sitter state if the corresponding Lagrangian is invariant under constant shifts in the scalar field. However, this is not the only possible future state of these shift-symmetric models as we show in this letter. In fact, future cosmic singularities characterized by a divergence of the energy density can also appear in this framework. We present an explicit example where a big rip singulari…
We discuss junction conditions across null hypersurfaces in a class of scalar-tensor gravity theories with i) second order dynamics, ii) obeying the recent constraints imposed by gravitational wave propagation, and iii) allowing for a cosmologically viable evolution. These requirements select kinetic gravity braiding models with linear kinetic term dependence and scalar field-dependent coupling to curvature. We explore a pseudo-orthonormal tetrad and its allowed gauge fixing, with one null vector standing as the normal, the other being transversal to the hypersurface. We derive a generalizatio…
We present a reconstruction method for flat Friedman-Robertson-Walker (FRW) spacetime in a subclass of Horndeski theory -- specifically shiftsymmetric, the kinetic gravity braiding (KGB) theory with a non-vanishing conserved current. Choosing the form of the Hubble parameter and kinetic density $X$, we restore the functions $G_2$, $G_3$ of the KGB model. In order to determine whether the model is free of ghosts and Laplacian instabilities and thus cosmologically viable, two conditions related to scalar perturbations are checked. Initially, the Lagrangian does not include the term that describe…
We show that, in the context of the two-field measure theory, any k-essence model leads to the existence of a fluid made of non-relativistic matter and cosmological constant that would explain the dark matter and dark energy problem at the same time. On the other hand, kinetic gravity braiding models can lead to different behaviors, such as phantom dark energy, stiff matter, and a cosmological constant. For stiff matter, there even exists the case where the scalar field does not have any effect in the dynamics of the Universe.
Based on our previous work, we constructed a phenomenological model of inflation with the higher derivative axion field in the light of recent cosmological expertiments BICEP2 and PLANCK. In order to achieve observed values for the important cosmological parameters $(n_s,r)$ we employ higher derivative kinetic term called kinetic gravity braiding (KGB) for the axion in compatible with the constant shift symmetry. Phenomenologically we choose a particular form of the braiding function $M(ϕ)$ which correctly reproduces the observed value of $(n_s, r)$ based on the recent cosmological observation…
The cross-correlation between the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect and the large scale structure (LSS) is a powerful tool to constrain dark energy and alternative theories of gravity. In this paper, we obtain observational constraints on kinetic gravity braiding from the ISW-LSS cross-correlation. We find that the late-time ISW effect in the kinetic gravity braiding model anti-correlates with large scale structures in a wide range of parameters, which clearly demonstrates how one can distinguish modified gravity theories from the LCDM model using the ISW effect. In addition to the analysis …
We constructed a new class of inflationary model with the higher derivative axion field which obeys constant shift symmetry. In the usual axion (natural) inflation, the axion decay constant is predicted to be in the super-Planckian regime which is believed to be incompatible with an effective field theory framework. With a novel mechanism originating from a higher derivative kinetic gravity braiding (KGB) of an axion field we found that there exist a huge parameter regime in our model where axion decay constant could be naturally sub-Planckian. Thanks to the KGB which effectively reduces the P…
Modified theories of gravity yield an effective dark energy in the background dynamics that achieves an accelerated expansion of the universe. In addition, they present a fifth force that induces gravitational signatures in structure formation, and therefore in the matter power spectrum and related statistics. On the other hand, massive neutrinos suppress the power spectrum at scales that also modified gravity enhances it, so a degeneration of these effects has been recognized for some gravity models. In the present work, we study both effects using kinetic gravity braiding (nKGB) models to fi…
An interesting class of scalar-tensor models, denoted by kinetic gravity braiding (KGB), has recently been proposed. These models contain interactions of the second derivatives of the scalar field that do not lead to additional degrees of freedom and exhibit peculiar features, such as an essential mixing of the scalar $ϕ$ and tensor kinetic $X$ terms. In this work, we consider the possibility that wormhole geometries are sustained by the KGB theory. More specifically, we present the full gravitational field equations in a static and spherically symmetric traversable wormhole background, and ou…
We introduce a large class of scalar-tensor models with interactions containing the second derivatives of the scalar field but not leading to additional degrees of freedom. These models exhibit peculiar features, such as an essential mixing of scalar and tensor kinetic terms, which we have named kinetic braiding. This braiding causes the scalar stress tensor to deviate from the perfect-fluid form. Cosmology in these models possesses a rich phenomenology, even in the limit where the scalar is an exact Goldstone boson. Generically, there are attractor solutions where the scalar monitors the beha…
We explore General Relativity solutions with stealth scalar hair in general quadratic higher-order scalar-tensor theories. Adopting the assumption that the scalar field has a constant kinetic term, we derive in a fully covariant manner a set of conditions under which the Euler-Lagrange equations allow General Relativity solutions as exact solutions in the presence of a general matter component minimally coupled to gravity. The scalar field possesses a nontrivial profile, which can be obtained by integrating the condition of constant kinetic term for each metric solution. We demonstrate the con…
We present a standard hydrodynamical description for non-canonical scalar field theories with kinetic gravity braiding. In particular, this picture applies to the simplest galileons and k-essence. The fluid variables not only have a clear physical meaning but also drastically simplify the analysis of the system. The fluid carries charges corresponding to shifts in field space. This shift-charge current contains a spatial part responsible for diffusion of the charges. Moreover, in the incompressible limit, the equation of motion becomes the standard diffusion equation. The fluid is indeed imper…
Solutions-generating methods based on field redefinitions, such as conformal mapping, play an important role in investigating exact solutions in modified gravity. In this work, we explore the possibility to use disformal field redefinitions to investigate new regions of the solution space of DHOST theories. The crucial ingredient is to find suitable seed solutions to generate new exact ones for DHOST theories. We first consider a seed solution of the Einstein-Scalar system describing a naked singularity. Under suitable assumptions, we derive a no-go result showing that no black hole solution c…
In five dimensions we consider a general shift symmetric and parity preserving scalar tensor action that contains up to second order covariant derivatives of the scalar field. A rotating stealth black hole solution is constructed where the metric is given by the Myers-Perry spacetime with equal momenta and the scalar field is identified with the Hamilton-Jacobi potential. This nontrivial scalar field has an extra hair associated with the rest mass of the test particle, and the solution does not require any fine tuning of the coupling functions of the theory. Interestingly enough, we show that …
We derive the general conditions for a large family of shift symmetry breaking degenerate higher order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theories to admit stealth black hole solutions. Such black hole configurations correspond to vacuum solutions of General Relativity and admit a scalar hair which does not gravitate, revealing itself only at the perturbative level. We focus our investigation on hairy Schwarzschild-(A)dS or pure Schwarzschild solutions, dressed with a linear time-dependent scalar hair, and assuming a constant kinetic term. We also discuss subclasses of this family which satisfy the observa…
We study spherically symmetric solutions of the cubic covariant Galileon model in curved spacetime in presence of a matter source, in the test scalar field approximation. We show that a cosmological time evolution of the Galileon field gives rise to an induced matter-scalar coupling, due to the Galileon-graviton kinetic braiding, therefore the solution for the Galileon field is non trivial even if the bare matter-scalar coupling constant is set to zero. The local solution crucially depends on the asymptotic boundary conditions, and in particular, Minkowski and de Sitter asymptotics correspond …
Rather than obtaining cosmic acceleration with a scalar field potential (quintessence) or noncanonical kinetic term (k-essence), we can do it purely through a modified gravity braiding of the scalar and metric, i.e. the $G_3$ Horndeski action term. Such "Horndessence" allows an exact $Λ$CDM cosmological expansion without any cosmological constant, and by requiring shift symmetry we can derive the exact form of $G_3$. We find that this route of deriving $G_3(X)$ leads to a functional form far from the usual simple assumptions such as a power law. Horndessence without any kinetic term or potenti…
Using the disformal solution-generating method, we construct new axisymmetric solutions in Degenerate Higher Order Scalar Tensor (DHOST) theories. The method consists in first considering a "seed" known solution in DHOST theories and then performing a disformal transformation of the metric to obtain a new solution. In vacuum, the two solutions are equivalent but they become physically inequivalent when one considers coupling to matter. In that way, we "disform" the stealth Kerr black hole solution and we obtain a first analytic rotating non-stealth solution in DHOST theories, while the associa…

The evolution of perturbations is a crucial part of the phenomenology of the dark sector cosmology. We advocate parameterizing these perturbations using equations of state for the entropy perturbation and the anisotropic stress. For small perturbations, these equations of state will be linear in the density, velocity and metric perturbations, and in principle these can be related back to the field content of the underlying model allowing for confrontation with observations. We illustrate our point by constructing gauge invariant entropy perturbations for theories where the dark sector Lagrangi…
We show that the generalized McVittie spacetime, which represents a black hole with time-dependent mass in an expanding universe, is an exact solution of a subclass of the Horndeski family of actions. The heat-flow term responsible for the energy transfer between the black hole and the cosmological background is generated by the higher-order kinetic gravity braiding term, which generalizes the cuscuton action that yields McVittie with constant mass as a solution. Finally, we show that this generalization can be understood in terms of a duality realized by a disformal transformation, connecting…
In the Horndeski's most general scalar-tensor theories the equations of scalar density perturbations are derived in the presence of non-relativistic matter minimally coupled to gravity. Under a quasi-static approximation on sub-horizon scales we obtain the effective gravitational coupling $G_{eff}$ associated with the growth rate of matter perturbations as well as the effective gravitational potential $Φ_{eff}$ relevant to the deviation of light rays. We then apply our formulas to a number of modified gravitational models of dark energy--such as those based on f(R) theories, Brans-Dicke theori…
We present a new prescription for analysing cosmological perturbations in a more-general class of scalar-field dark-energy models where the energy-momentum tensor has an imperfect-fluid form. This class includes Brans-Dicke models, f(R) gravity, theories with kinetic gravity braiding and generalised galileons. We employ the intuitive language of fluids, allowing us to explicitly maintain a dependence on physical and potentially measurable properties. We demonstrate that hydrodynamics is not always a valid description for describing cosmological perturbations in general scalar-field theories an…
