We consider the linear growth of matter perturbations on low redshifts in some $f(R)$ dark energy (DE) models. We discuss the definition of dark energy (DE) in these models and show the differences with scalar-tensor DE models. For the $f(R)$ model recently proposed by Starobinsky we show that the growth parameter $γ_0\equiv γ(z=0)$ takes the value $γ_0\simeq 0.4$ for $Ω_{m,0}=0.32$ and $γ_0\simeq 0.43$ for $Ω_{m,0}=0.23$, allowing for a clear distinction from $Λ$CDM. Though a scale-dependence appears in the growth of perturbations on higher redshifts, we find no dispersion for $γ(z)$ on low redshifts up to $z\sim 0.3$, $γ(z)$ is also quasi-linear in this interval. At redshift $z=0.5$, the dispersion is still small with $Δγ\simeq 0.01$. As for some scalar-tensor models, we find here too a large value for $γ'_0\equiv \frac{dγ}{dz}(z=0)$, $γ'_0\simeq -0.25$ for $Ω_{m,0}=0.32$ and $γ'_0\simeq -0.18$ for $Ω_{m,0}=0.23$. These values are largely outside the range found for DE models in General Relativity (GR). This clear signature provides a powerful constraint on these models.
We consider asymptotically stable scalar-tensor dark energy (DE) models for which the equation of state parameter $w_{DE}$ tends to zero in the past. The viable models are of the phantom type today, however this phantomness is milder than in General Relativity if we take into account the varying gravitational constant when dealing with the SNIa data. We study further the growth of matter perturbations and we find a scaling behaviour on large redshifts which could provide an important constraint. In particular the growth of matter perturbations on large redshifts in our scalar-tensor models is …
We consider the linear growth of matter perturbations in various dark energy (DE) models. We show the existence of a constraint valid at $z=0$ between the background and dark energy parameters and the matter perturbations growth parameters. For $Λ$CDM $γ'_0\equiv \frac{dγ}{dz}_0$ lies in a very narrow interval $-0.0195 \le γ'_0 \le -0.0157$ for $0.2 \le Ω_{m,0}\le 0.35$. Models with a constant equation of state inside General Relativity (GR) are characterized by a quasi-constant $γ'_0$, for $Ω_{m,0}=0.3$ for example we have $γ'_0\approx -0.02$ while $γ_0$ can have a nonnegligible variation. A …
We investigate the connection between dark energy and fourth order gravity by analyzing the behavior of scalar perturbations around a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background. The evolution equations for scalar perturbation are derived using the covariant and gauge invariant approach and applied to two widely studied $f(R)$ gravity models. The structure of the general fourth order perturbation equations and the analysis of scalar perturbations lead to the discovery of a characteristic signature of fourth order gravity in the matter power spectrum, the details of which have not seen before in othe…
We study the growth of linear perturbations induced by a generic causal scaling source as a function of the cosmological parameters $h$, $Ω^m_0$ and $Ω^Λ_0$. We show that for wavenumbers $k \gsim 0.01 h/Mpc$ the spectrum of density and velocity perturbations scale in a similar way to that found in inflationary models with primordial perturbations. We show that this result is independent of the more or less incoherent nature of the source, the small scale power spectrum of the source and of deviations from scaling which naturally occur at late times if $Ω^m_0 \neq 1$.
All regular and singular cosmological perturbations in a radiation dominated Einstein-de Sitter Universe with collisionless particles can be found by a generalized power series ansatz. Talk given at "Birth of the Universe and Fundamental Physics", May 1994 (Rome).
We present an analytical fit to the growth function of the dark matter perturbations when dark energy perturbations are present. The growth index depends upon the dark energy equation of state w, the speed of sound of the dark energy fluctuations, the dark matter abundance and the observed comoving scale. The growth index changes by ~5% for small speed of sound and large deviations of w from -1 with respect to its value in the limit of no dark energy perturbations.
The strongest evidence for dark energy comes presently from geometric techniques such as the supernova distance-redshift relation. By combining the measured expansion history with the Friedmann equation one determines the energy density and its time evolution, hence the equation of state of dark energy. Because these methods rely on the Friedmann equation which has not been independently tested it is desirable to find alternative methods that work for both general relativity and other theories of gravity. Assuming that sufficiently large patches of a perturbed Robertson-Walker spacetime evolve…
We consider theories with an arbitrary coupling between matter and gravity and obtain the perturbation equation of matter on subhorizon scales. Also, we derive the effective gravitational constant $G_{eff}$ and two parameters $Σ$ and $η$, which along with the perturbation equation of the matter density are useful to constrain the theory from growth factor and weak lensing observations. Finally, we use a completely solvable toy model which exhibits nontrivial phenomenology to investigate specific features of the theory. We obtain the analytic solution of the modified Friedmann equation for the …
We verify numerically that in the context of general relativity (GR), flat models which have the same $Ω_{\rm m}$ and CMB shift parameter $R$ but different $H(a)$ and $w(a)$ also have very similar (within less than 8%) growth of perturbations even though the dark energy density evolution is quite different. This provides a direct connection between geometrical and dynamical tests of dark energy and may be used as a cosmological test of general relativity.
The purpose of this paper is to explore how accretion discs manifest the phenomenon of transient growth on a global scale. We investigate analytically the time response of a thin accretion disc to particular axisymmetric perturbations. To facilitate an analytical treatment we replace the energy equation with a general polytropic assumption. The asymptotic expansion of Kluźniak & Kita (2000), which extended the method of Regev (1983) to a full steady polytropic disc (with $n=3/2$), is further developed and implemented for both the steady (for any polytropic index) and time-dependent problems. T…
The evolution of baryon density perturbations on very small scales is investigated. In particular, the nonlinear growth induced by the radiation drag force from the shear velocity field on larger scales during the recombination epoch, which is originally proposed by Shaviv in 1998, is studied in detail. It is found that inclusion of the diffusion term which Shaviv neglected in his analysis results in rather mild growth whose growth rate is $\ll 100$ instead of enormous amplification $\sim 10^4$ of Shaviv's original claim since the diffusion suppresses the growth. The growth factor strongly dep…
When a self-gravitating spherical gas cloud collapses or accretes onto a central mass, the inner region of the cloud develops a density profile $ρ\propto r^{-3/2}$ and the velocity approaches free-fall. We show that in this region, nonspherical perturbations grow with decreasing radius. In the linear regime, the tangential velocity perturbation increases as $r^{-1}$, while the Lagrangian density perturbation, $Δρ/ρ$, grows as $r^{-1/2}$. Faster growth occurs if the central collapsed object maintains a finite multiple moment, in which case $Δρ/ρ$ increases as $r^{-l}$, where $l$ specifies the a…
We calculate the evolution of linear density and temperature perturbations in a universe with dark matter, baryons, and radiation, from cosmic recombination until the epoch of the first galaxies. In addition to gravity, the perturbations are effected by electron scattering with the radiation, by radiation pressure, and by gas pressure. We include the effect of spatial fluctuations in the baryonic sound speed and show that they induce a >10% change in the baryonic density power spectrum on small scales, and a larger change on all scales in the power spectrum of gas temperature fluctuations. A p…
We consider the evolution of linear perturbations in models with a nonminimal coupling between dark matter and scalar field dark energy. Growth of matter inhomogeneities in two examples of such models proposed in the literature are investigated in detail. Both of these models are based on a low-energy limit of effective string theory action, and have been previously shown to naturally lead to late acceleration of the universe. However, we find that these models can be ruled out by taking properly into account the impact of the scalar field coupling on the formation of structure in the dark mat…
In most models of dark energy the structure formation stops when the accelerated expansion begins. In contrast, we show that the coupling of dark energy to dark matter may induce the growth of perturbations even in the accelerated regime. In particular, we show that this occurs in the models proposed to solve the cosmic coincidence problem, in which the ratio of dark energy to dark matter is constant. Moreover, if the dark energy couples only to dark matter and not to baryons, as requested by the constraints imposed by local gravity measurements, the baryon fluctuations develop a constant, sca…
We investigate stability of a gravitationally collapsing iron core against non-spherical perturbation. The gravitationally collapsing iron core is approximated by a similarity solution for dynamically collapsing polytropic gas sphere. We find that the similarity solution is unstable against non-spherical perturbations. The perturbation grows in proportion to $ (t - t_0) ^{-σ} $ while the the central density increases in proportion to $ (t - t_0) ^{-2} $. The growth rate is $ σ= 1/3 + \ell (γ- 4/3) $, where $ γ$ and $ \ell $ denote the polytropic index and the parameter $ \ell $ of the spherica…
Flow nonnormality induced linear transient phenomena in thin self-gravitating astrophysical discs are studied in the shearing sheet approximation. The considered system includes two modes of perturbations: vortex and (spiral density) wave. It is shown that self-gravity considerably alters the vortex mode dynamics -- its transient (swing) growth may be several orders of magnitude stronger than in the non-self-gravitating case and 2-3 times larger than the transient growth of the wave mode. Based on this finding, we comment on the role of vortex mode perturbations in a gravitoturbulent state. Al…
Formulae are presented for the linear growth factor D/a and its logarithmic derivative dlnD/dlna in expanding Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Universes with arbitrary matter and vacuum densities. The formulae permit rapid and stable numerical evaluation. A fortran program is available at http://casa.colorado.edu/~ajsh/growl/ .
We calculate growth rates and corresponding gains for RX and LO mode radiation associated with the cyclotron maser instability for parameterized horseshoe electron velocity distributions. The velocity distribution function was modeled to closely fit the electron distribution functions observed in the auroral cavity. We systematically varied the model parameters as well as the propagation direction to study the dependence of growth rates on model parameters. The growth rate depends strongly on loss cone opening angle, which must be less than $90^{o}$ for significant CMI growth. The growth rate …
We investigate the damping of the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) signature in the matter power spectrum due to the quasi-nonlinear clustering of density perturbations. On the basis of the third order perturbation theory, we construct a fitting formula of the damping in an analytic way. This demonstrates that the damping is closely related with the growth factor and the amplitude of the matter power spectrum. Then, we investigate the feasibility of constraining the growth factor through a measurement of the damping of the BAO signature. An extension of our formula including higher order cor…
The dynamics of small global perturbations in the form of linear combination of a finite number of non-axisymmetric eigenmodes is studied in two-dimensional approximation. The background flow is assumed to be an axisymmetric perfect fluid with the adiabatic index $γ=5/3$ rotating with power law angular velocity distribution $Ω\propto r^{-q}$, $1.5<q<2.0$, confined by free boundaries in the radial direction. The substantial transient growth of acoustic energy of optimized perturbations is discovered. An optimal energy growth $G$ is calculated numerically for a variety of parameters. Its value d…
I demonstrate that instability in a system of homogeneous scalar fields leads to the growth of super-Hubble metric perturbations. This generalizes the result that parametric resonance can lead to the growth of cosmological perturbations. Since dynamical chaos is common in multi-field quartically coupled systems, I argue that the evolution of the fields after inflation must be examined to determine whether the amplitude of cosmological metric perturbations is underestimated in the standard inflationary calculations. I illustrate this effect with a simple hybrid inflation model.
This paper provides a review of the variants of dark matter (CDM, HDM) which are thought to be fundamental components of the universe and their role in origin and evolution of structures.
In this article we consider the growth of seed black holes immersed in dark matter halos. We first investigate the adiabatic growth in various initial distribution functions (isothermal, power law, and NFW) and find the resulting density, radial velocity, and anisotropy profiles. In addition we estimate the growth rate for a given black hole mass in the corresponding adiabatically modified dark matter distribution function. Only in the isothermal case is there a convincing black hole mass-age relation. By calculating the line of sight velocity dispersion for the various cases as a function of …
The connection between dark matter and giant black holes in the galactic nuclei is investigated. The joint evolution of dark and luminous matter in averaged self-consistent gravitational potential is considered. It is shown that the distribution of dark matter remains spherically symmetric even in presence of essential asymmetry of luminous matter in the galaxy. The kinetic equation describing evolution of dark matter particles distribution function which takes into account their dynamics in gravitational potential and scattering on stars is derived. It is shown that significant flux of dark m…
Cosmological scaling solutions are particularly important in solving the coincidence problem of dark energy. We derive the equations of sub-Hubble linear matter perturbations for a general scalar-field Lagrangian--including quintessence, tachyon, dilatonic ghost condensate and k-essence--and solve them analytically for scaling solutions. We find that matter perturbations are always damped if a phantom field is coupled to dark matter and identify the cases in which the gravitational potential is constant. This provides an interesting possibility to place stringent observational constraints on s…
We present a simple resonant Hamiltonian model for the vertical response of a stellar disk to the growth of a bar perturbation. As a bar perturbation grows stars become trapped in vertical Inner Lindblad resonances and are lifted into higher amplitude orbits. The vertical structure of a boxy and peanut shaped bulge as a function of radius and azimuthal angle in the galaxy plane can be predicted from the strength and speed of the bar perturbation and the derivatives of the gravitational potential. This model predicts that stars on the outer side of the resonance are lifted higher than stars on …
We study second-order cosmological perturbations in scalar-tensor models of dark energy that satisfy local gravity constraints, including f(R) gravity. We derive equations for matter fluctuations under a sub-horizon approximation and clarify conditions under which first-order perturbations in the scalar field can be neglected relative to second-order matter and velocity perturbations. We also compute the skewness of the matter density distribution and find that the difference from the LCDM model is only less than a few percent even if the growth rate of first-order perturbations is significant…
This paper deals with the problem of hydrodynamic shear turbulence in non-magnetized Keplerian disks. We wish to draw attention to a route to hydrodynamic turbulence which seems to be little known by the astrophysical community, but which has been intensively discussed among fluid dynamicists during the past decade. In this so-called `bypass' concept for the onset of turbulence, perturbations undergo a transient growth, and they may reach an amplitude that is sufficiently large to allow positive feedback through nonlinear interactions. This transient growth is linear in nature, and thus it dif…
It has been shown that hybrid inflation may end with the formation of non-topological solitons of inflaton field. As a first step towards a fully realistic picture of the post-inflation era and reheating in supersymmetric hybrid inflation models, we study the classical scalar field equations of a supersymmetric hybrid inflation model using a semi-analytical ansatz for the spatial dependence of the fields. Using the minimal D-term inflation model as an example, the inflaton field is evolved using the full 1-loop effective potential from the slow-rolling era to the U(1)_{FI} symmetry-breaking ph…
It is well known that the $Λ$-term is a very good candidate for the smooth component of the universe since it resolves the so-called ``$Ω$-problem'' giving, at the same time, sufficiently large age of the universe. However, the constant $Λ$-term is not the only possibility. Some people consider the $Λ$-term varying in time according to the law $Λ\approx R^{-2}$. Moreover the global texture in a closed universe and the network of cosmic strings obeying the same law of variation ($ρ\approx R^{-2}$) seem to be good candidates as well. We call the ``exotic'' form of matter scaling according to thi…
We consider the sensitivity of the circular-orbit adiabatic contraction approximation to the baryon condensation rate and the orbital structure of dark matter halos in the $Λ$CDM paradigm. Using one-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations including the dark matter halo mass accretion history and gas cooling, we demonstrate that the adiabatic approximation is approximately valid even though halos and disks may assemble simultaneously. We further demonstrate the validity of the simple approximation for $Λ$CDM halos with isotropic velocity distributions using three-dimensional N-body simulations. Th…
We have used merger trees realizations to study the formation of dark matter haloes. The construction of merger-trees is based on three different pictures about the formation of structures in the Universe. These pictures include: the spherical collapse (SC), the ellipsoidal collapse (EC) and the non-radial collapse (NR). The reliability of merger-trees has been examined comparing their predictions related to the distribution of the number of progenitors, as well as the distribution of formation times, with the predictions of analytical relations. The comparison yields a very satisfactory agree…
Local nonlinear approximations to the growth of cosmic perturbations are developed, resulting in relations, at a given epoch, between the peculiar velocity and gravity fields and their gradients. Only the equation of motion is approximated, while mass conservation and the computation of the gravitational field are treated exactly. The second-order relation is derived for arbitrary geometry and cosmological parameters. Solutions are developed to fourth order for laminar spherical perturbations in an Einstein-de Sitter universe, but the gain in accuracy for higher orders is modest. All orders be…
Some formulae for the perturbations of the matter fields are summarized within the framework of the second-order gauge-invariant cosmological perturbation theory in a four dimensional homogeneous isotropic universe, which is developed in the papers [K.Nakamura, Prog.Theor.Phys., 117 (2007), 17.]. We derive the formulae for the perturbations of the energy momentum tensors and equations of motion for a perfect fluid, an imperfect fluid, and a signle scalar field, and show that all equations are derived in terms of gauge-invariant variables without any gauge fixing.
We study the possible origin of hydrodynamic turbulence in cold accretion disks such as those in star-forming systems and quiescent cataclysmic variables. As these systems are expected to have neutral gas, the turbulent viscosity is likely to be hydrodynamic in origin, not magnetohydrodynamic. Therefore MRI will be sluggish or even absent in such disks. Although there are no exponentially growing eigenmodes in a hydrodynamic disk, because of the non-normal nature of the eigenmodes, a large transient growth in the energy is still possible, which may enable the system to switch to a turbulent st…
We study non-linear structure formation in the presence of dark energy. The influence of dark energy on the growth of large-scale cosmological structures is exerted both through its background effect on the expansion rate, and through its perturbations as well. In order to compute the rate of formation of massive objects we employ the Spherical Collapse formalism, which we generalize to include fluids with pressure. We show that the resulting non-linear evolution equations are identical to the ones obtained in the Pseudo-Newtonian approach to cosmological perturbations, in the regime where an …
