Let $A \subset {\mathbb Z}$ be a finite subset. We denote by $\mathcal{B}(A)$ the set of all integers $n \ge 2$ such that $|nA| > (2n-1)(|A|-1)$, where $nA=A+\cdots+A$ denotes the $n$-fold sumset of $A$. The motivation to consider $\mathcal{B}(A)$ stems from Buchweitz's discovery in 1980 that if a numerical semigroup $S \subseteq {\mathbb N}$ is a Weierstrass semigroup, then $\mathcal{B}({\mathbb N} \setminus S) = \emptyset$. By constructing instances where this condition fails, Buchweitz disproved a longstanding conjecture by Hurwitz (1893). In this paper, we prove that for any numerical semigroup $S \subset {\mathbb N}$ of genus $g \ge 2$, the set $\mathcal{B}({\mathbb N} \setminus S) $ is finite, of unbounded cardinality as $S$ varies.
We solve a problem of Komeda concerning the proportion of numerical semigroups which do not satisfy Buchweitz' necessary criterion for a semigroup to occur as the Weierstrass semigroup of a point on an algebraic curve. We also show that the family of semigroups known to be Weierstrass semigroups using a result of Eisenbud and Harris, has zero density in the set of all semigroups. In the process, we prove several more general results about the structure of a typical numerical semigroup.
In this paper we introduce the notion of m-irreducibility that extends the standard concept of irreducibility of a numerical semigroup when the multiplicity is fixed. We analyze the structure of the set of m-irreducible numerical semigroups, we give some properties of these numerical semigroups and we present algorithms to compute the decomposition of a numerical semigroups with multiplicity m into m-irreducible numerical semigroups.
In this paper we analyze the irreducibility of numerical semigroups with multiplicity up to four. Our approach uses the notion of Kunz-coordinates vector of a numerical semigroup recently introduced in (Blanco-Puerto, 2011). With this tool we also completely describe the whole family of minimal decompositions into irreducible numerical semigroups with the same multiplicity for this set of numerical semigroups. We give detailed examples to show the applicability of the methodology and conditions for the irreducibility of well-known families of numerical semigroups as those that are generated by…
For numerical semigroups with a specified list of (not necessarily minimal) generators, we describe the asymptotic distribution of factorization lengths with respect to an arbitrary modulus. In particular, we prove that the factorization lengths are equidistributed across all congruence classes that are not trivially ruled out by modular considerations.
In this paper we present a new approach to construct the set of numerical semigroups with a fixed genus. Our methodology is based on the construction of the set of numerical semigroups with fixed Frobenius number and genus. An equivalence relation is given over this set and a tree structure is defined for each equivalence class. We also provide a more efficient algorithm based in the translation of a numerical semigroup to its so-called Kunz-coordinates vector.
We study the cyclotomic exponent sequence of a numerical semigroup $S,$ and we compute its values at the gaps of $S,$ the elements of $S$ with unique representations in terms of minimal generators, and the Betti elements $b\in S$ for which the set $\{a \in \operatorname{Betti}(S) : a \le_{S}b\}$ is totally ordered with respect to $\le_S$ (we write $a \le_S b$ whenever $a - b \in S,$ with $a,b\in S$). This allows us to characterize certain semigroup families, such as Betti-sorted or Betti-divisible numerical semigroups, as well as numerical semigroups with a unique Betti element, in terms of th…
For numerical semigroups with a specified list of (not necessarily minimal) generators, we obtain explicit asymptotic expressions, and in some cases quasipolynomial/quasirational representations, for all major factorization length statistics. This involves a variety of tools that are not standard in the subject, such as algebraic combinatorics (Schur polynomials), probability theory (weak convergence of measures, characteristic functions), and harmonic analysis (Fourier transforms of distributions). We provide instructive examples which demonstrate the power and generality of our techniques. W…
Given a numerical semigroup $S$, we let $\mathrm P_S(x)=(1-x)\sum_{s\in S}x^s$ be its semigroup polynomial. We study cyclotomic numerical semigroups; these are numerical semigroups $S$ such that $\mathrm P_S(x)$ has all its roots in the unit disc. We conjecture that $S$ is a cyclotomic numerical semigroup if and only if $S$ is a complete intersection numerical semigroup and present some evidence for it. Aside from the notion of cyclotomic numerical semigroup we introduce the notion of cyclotomic exponents and polynomially related numerical semigroups. We derive some properties and give some ap…
We introduce square diagrams that represent numerical semigroups and we obtain an injection from the set of numerical semigroups into the set of Dyck paths.
A numerical semigroup is a sub-semigroup of the natural numbers that has a finite complement. Some of the key properties of a numerical semigroup are its Frobenius number F, genus g and type t. It is known that for any numerical semigroup $\frac{g}{F+1-g}\leq t\leq 2g-F$. Numerical semigroups with $t=2g-F$ are called almost symmetric, we introduce a new property that characterises them. We give an explicit characterisation of numerical semigroups with $t=\frac{g}{F+1-g}$. We show that for a fixed $α$ the number of numerical semigroups with Frobenius number $F$ and type $F-α$ is eventually cons…
We examine properties of random numerical semigroups under a probabilistic model inspired by the Erdos-Renyi model for random graphs. We provide a threshold function for cofiniteness, and bound the expected embedding dimension, genus, and Frobenius number of random semigroups. Our results follow, surprisingly, from the construction of a very natural shellable simplicial complex whose facets are in bijection with irreducible numerical semigroups of a fixed Frobenius number and whose $h$-vector determines the probability that a particular element lies in the semigroup.
A natural operation on numerical semigroups is taking a quotient by a positive integer. If $\mathcal S$ is a quotient of a numerical semigroup with $k$ generators, we call $\mathcal S$ a $k$-quotient. We give a necessary condition for a given numerical semigroup $\mathcal S$ to be a $k$-quotient, and present, for each $k \ge 3$, the first known family of numerical semigroups that cannot be written as a $k$-quotient. We also examine the probability that a randomly selected numerical semigroup with $k$ generators is a $k$-quotient.
The pseudo-Frobenius numbers of a numerical semigroup are those gaps of the numerical semigroup that are maximal for the partial order induced by the semigroup. We present a procedure to detect if a given set of integers is the set of pseudo-Frobenius numbers of a numerical semigroup and, if so, to compute the set of all numerical semigroups having this set as set of pseudo-Frobenius numbers.
Delorme suggested that the set of all complete intersection numerical semigroups can be computed recursively. We have implemented this algorithm, and particularized it to several subfamilies of this class of numerical semigroups: free and telescopic numerical semigroups, and numerical semigroups associated to an irreducible plane curve singularity. The recursive nature of this procedure allows us to give bounds for the embedding dimension and for the minimal generators of a semigroup in any of these families.
Let n_g denote the number of numerical semigroups of genus g. Bras-Amoros conjectured that n_g possesses certain Fibonacci-like properties. Almost all previous attempts at proving this conjecture were based on analyzing the semigroup tree. We offer a new, simpler approach to counting numerical semigroups of a given genus. Our method gives direct constructions of families of numerical semigroups, without referring to the generators or the semigroup tree. In particular, we give an improved asymptotic lower bound for n_g.
In this work we introduce the notion of almost-symmetry for generalized numerical semigroups. In addition to the main properties occurring in this new class, we present several characterizations for its elements. In particular we show that this class yields a new family of Frobenius generalized numerical semigroups and extends the class of irreducible generalized numerical semigroups. This investigation allows us to provide a method of computing all almost symmetric generalized numerical semigroup having a fixed Frobenius element and organizing them in a rooted tree depending on a chosen monom…
This work extends the results known for the Delta sets of non-symmetric numerical semigroups with embedding dimension three to the symmetric case. Thus, we have a fast algorithm to compute the Delta set of any embedding dimension three numerical semigroup. Also, as a consequence of these resutls, the sets that can be realized as Delta sets of numerical semigroups of embedding dimension three are fully characterized.
This paper studies Young diagrams of symmetric and pseudo-symmetric numerical semigroups and describes new operations on Young diagrams as well as numerical semigroups. These provide new decompositions of symmetric and pseudo-symmetric semigroups into an over semigroup and its dual. It is also given exactly for what kind of numerical semigroup $S$, the semigroup ring $\Bbbk[\![S]\!]$ has at least one Gorenstein subring and has at least one Kunz subring.
A numerical semigroup $S$ is an additive subsemigroup of the non-negative integers with finite complement, and the squarefree divisor complex of an element $m \in S$ is a simplicial complex $Δ_m$ that arises in the study of multigraded Betti numbers. We compute squarefree divisor complexes for certain classes numerical semigroups, and exhibit a new family of simplicial complexes that are occur as the squarefree divisor complex of some numerical semigroup element.
This paper presents a new methodology to count the number of numerical semigroups of given genus or Frobenius number. We apply generating function tools to the bounded polyhedron that classifies the semigroups with given genus (or Frobenius number) and multiplicity. First, we give theoretical results about the polynomial-time complexity of counting the number of these semigroups. We also illustrate the methodology analyzing the cases of multiplicity 3 and 4 where some formulas for the number of numerical semigroups for any genus and Frobenius number are obtained.
We introduce an order on the set of non-divisorial ideals of a numerical semigroup $S$, and link antichains of this order with the star operations on $S$; subsequently, we use this order to find estimates on the number of star operations on $S$. We then use them to find an asymptotic estimate on the number of nonsymmetric numerical semigroups with $n$ or less star operations, and to determine these semigroups explicitly when $n=10$.
We present a procedure to enumerate the whole set of numerical semigroups with a given Frobenius number F, S(F). The methodology is based on the construction of a partition of S(F) by a congruence relation. We identify exactly one irreducible and one homogeneous numerical semigroup at each class in the relation, and from those two elements we reconstruct the whole class. An alternative more efficient method is proposed based on the use of the Kunz-coordinates vectors of the elements in S(F).
A simple way of computing the Apéry set of a numerical semigroup (or monoid) with respect to a generator, using Groebner bases, is presented, together with a generalization for affine semigroups. This computation allows us to calculate the type set and, henceforth, to check the Gorenstein condition which characterizes the symmetric numerical subgroups.
For a numerical semigroup, we encode the set of primitive elements that are larger than its Frobenius number and show how to produce in a fast way the corresponding sets for its children in the semigroup tree. This allows us to present an efficient algorithm for exploring the tree up to a given genus. The algorithm exploits the second nonzero element of a numerical semigroup and the particular pseudo-ordinary case in which this element is the conductor.
A numerical semigroup is a subset of the non-negative integers that is closed under addition. For a randomly generated numerical semigroup, the expected number of minimum generators can be expressed in terms of a doubly-indexed sequence of integers, denoted $h_{n, i}$, that count generating sets with certain properties. We prove a recurrence that implies the sequence $h_{n,i}$ is eventually quasipolynomial when the second parameter is fixed.
Most factorization invariants in the literature extract extremal factorization behavior, such as the maximum and minimum factorization lengths. Invariants of intermediate size, such as the mean, median, and mode factorization lengths are more subtle. We use techniques from analysis and probability to describe the asymptotic behavior of these invariants. Surprisingly, the asymptotic median factorization length is described by a number that is usually irrational.
The delta set of a numerical semigroup $S$, denoted $Δ(S)$, is a factorization invariant that measures the complexity of the sets of lengths of elements in $S$. We study the following problem: Which finite sets occur as the delta set of a numerical semigroup $S$? It is known that $\min Δ(S) = \gcd Δ(S)$ is a necessary condition. For any two-element set $\{d,td\}$ we produce a semigroup $S$ with this delta set. We then show that for $t\ge 2$, the set $\{d,td\}$ occurs as the delta set of some numerical semigroup of embedding dimension three if and only if $t=2$.
Numerical semigroups are cofinite additive submonoids of the natural numbers. In 2011, Keith and Nath illustrated an injection from numerical semigroups to integer partitions. We explore this connection between partitions and numerical semigroups with a focus on classifying the partitions that appear in the image of the injection from numerical semigroups. In particular, we count the number of partitions that correspond to numerical semigroups in terms of genus, Frobenius number, and multiplicity, with some restrictions.
We improve the previously best known lower and upper bounds on the number n_g of numerical semigroups of genus g. Starting from a known recursive description of the tree T of numerical semigroups, we analyze some of its properties and use them to construct approximations of T by generating trees whose nodes are labeled by certain parameters of the semigroups. We then translate the succession rules of these trees into functional equations for the generating functions that enumerate their nodes, and solve these equations to obtain the bounds. Some of our bounds involve the Fibonacci numbers, and…
A numerical semigroup is a submonoid of $\mathbb N$ with finite complement in $\mathbb N$. A generalized numerical semigroup is a submonoid of $\mathbb{N}^{d}$ with finite complement in $\mathbb{N}^{d}$. In the context of numerical semigroups, Wilf's conjecture is a long standing open problem whose study has led to new mathematics and new ways of thinking about monoids. A natural extension of Wilf's conjecture, to the class of $\mathcal C$-semigroups, was proposed by García-García, Marín-Aragón, and Vigneron-Tenorio. In this paper, we propose a different generalization of Wilf's conjecture, to…
We find a relation between the genus of a quotient of a numerical semigroup $S$ and the genus of $S$ itself. We use this identity to compute the genus of a quotient of $S$ when $S$ has embedding dimension $2$. We also exhibit identities relating the Frobenius numbers and the genus of quotients of numerical semigroups that are generated by certain types of arithmetic progressions.
This paper is a continuation of the paper "Numerical Semigroups: Apéry Sets and Hilbert Series". We consider the general numerical AA-semigroup, i.e., semigroups consisting of all non-negative integer linear combinations of relatively prime positive integers of the form $a,a+d,a+2d,\dots,a+kd,c$. We first prove that, in contrast to arbitrary numerical semigroups, there exists an upper bound for the type of AA-semigroups that only depends on the number of generators of the semigroup. We then present two characterizations of pseudo-symmetric AA-semigroups. The first one leads to a polynomial tim…
An affine semigroup is a finitely generated subsemigroup of $(\mathbb Z_{\ge 0}^d, +)$, and a numerical semigroup is an affine semigroup with $d = 1$. A growing body of recent work examines shifted families of numerical semigroups, that is, families of numerical semigroups of the form $M_n = \langle n + r_1, \ldots, n + r_k \rangle$ for fixed $r_1, \ldots, r_k$, with one semigroup for each value of the shift parameter $n$. It has been shown that within any shifted family of numerical semigroups, the size of any minimal presentation is bounded (in fact, this size is eventually periodic in $n$).…
We present procedures to calculate the set of Arf numerical semigroups with given genus, given conductor and given genus and conductor. We characterize the Kunz coordinates of an Arf numerical semigroup. We also describe Arf numerical semigroups with fixed Frobenius number and multiplicity up to six.
This article is partly a survey and partly a research paper. It tackles the use of Groebner bases for addressing problems of numerical semigroups, which is a topic that has been around for some years, but it does it in a systematic way which enables us to prove some results and a hopefully interesting characterization of the elements of a semigroup in terms of Groebner bases.
Let $\mathbb{N}^{d}$ be the $d$-dimensional monoid of non-negative integers. A generalized numerical semigroup is a submonoid $ S\subseteq \mathbb{N}^d$ such that $H(S)=\mathbb{N}^d \setminus S$ is a finite set. We introduce irreducible generalized numerical semigroups and characterize them in terms of the cardinality of a special subset of $H(S)$. In particular, we describe relaxed monomial orders on $\mathbb N^d$, define the Frobenius element of $S$ with respect to a given relaxed monomial order, and show that the Frobenius element of $S$ is independent of the order if the generalized numeri…
We show that the number of numerical semigroups with multiplicity three, four or five and fixed genus is increasing as a function in the genus. To this end we use the Kunz polytope for these multiplicities. Counting numerical semigroups with fixed multiplicity and genus is then an integer partition problem with some extra conditions (those of membership to the Kunz polytope). For the particular case of multiplicity four, we are able to prove that the number of numerical semigroups with multiplicity four and genus $g$ is the number of partitions $x+y+z=g+6$ with $0<x\le y\le z$, $x\neq 1$, $y\n…
Let 0 < a < b be two relatively prime integers and let <a,b> be the numerical semigroup generated by a and b with Frobenius number g(a,b)=ab-a-b. In this note, we prove that there exists a prime number p in <a,b> with p < g(a,b) when the product ab is sufficiently large. Two related conjectures are posed and discussed as well.
The aim of this paper is to propose an extension of the Wilf conjecture to semimodules over a numerical semigroup through a new approach toward the solution of the Wilf conjecture on numerical semigroups. The key point is the introduction of a new invariant that we call Wilf function of a semigroup that can be also defined for a semimodule over the semigroup. We also study the relation of the Wilf function of a semigroup and the Wilf function of certain semimodules associated to a gap of the semigroup. As a consequence, we obtain an alternative conjecture which also implies the Wilf conjecture…
We consider the two-player game chomp on posets associated to numerical semigroups and show that the analysis of strategies for chomp is strongly related to classical properties of semigroups. We characterize, which player has a winning-strategy for symmetric semigroups, semigroups of maximal embedding dimension and several families of numerical semigroups generated by arithmetic sequences. Furthermore, we show that which player wins on a given numerical semigroup is a decidable question. Finally, we extend several of our results to the more general setting of subsemigroups of $\mathbb{N} \tim…
For numerical semigroups with three generators, we study the asymptotic behavior of weighted factorization lengths, that is, linear functionals of the coefficients in the factorizations of semigroup elements. This work generalizes many previous results, provides more natural and intuitive proofs, and yields a completely explicit error bound.
