Let 0 < a < b be two relatively prime integers and let <a,b> be the numerical semigroup generated by a and b with Frobenius number g(a,b)=ab-a-b. In this note, we prove that there exists a prime number p in <a,b> with p < g(a,b) when the product ab is sufficiently large. Two related conjectures are posed and discussed as well.
Let $p_1=2, p_2=3, p_3=5, \ldots$ be the consecutive prime numbers, $S_n$ the numerical semigroup generated by the primes not less than $p_n$ and $u_n$ the largest irredundant generator of $S_n$. We will show, that $\bullet$ $u_n\sim3p_n$. Similarly, for the largest integer $f_n$ not contained in $S_n$, by computational evidence we suspect that $\bullet$ $f_n$ is an odd number for $n\geq5$ and $\bullet$ $f_n\sim3p_n$; further $\bullet$ $4p_n>f_{n+1}$ for $n\geq1$. If $f_n$ is odd for large $n$, then $f_n\sim3p_n$. In case $f_n\sim3p_n$ every large even integer $x$ is the sum of two primes. If …
Let $0<λ\leq1$, $λ\notin\left\{\frac24, \frac27, \frac2{10}, \frac2{13}, \ldots\right\}$, be a real and $p$ a prime number, with $[p,p+λp]$ containing at least two primes. Denote by $f_λ(p)$ the largest integer which cannot be written as a sum of primes from $[p,p+λp]$. Then \[f_λ(p)\sim\left\lfloor2+\frac2λ\right\rfloor\cdot p\text{, as }p\text{ goes to infinity.}\] Further a question of Wilf about the 'Money-Changing Problem' has a positive answer for all semigroups of multiplicity $p$ containing the primes from $[p,2p]$. In particular, this holds for the semigroup generated by all primes no…
Numerical semigroups are cofinite additive submonoids of the natural numbers. In 2011, Keith and Nath illustrated an injection from numerical semigroups to integer partitions. We explore this connection between partitions and numerical semigroups with a focus on classifying the partitions that appear in the image of the injection from numerical semigroups. In particular, we count the number of partitions that correspond to numerical semigroups in terms of genus, Frobenius number, and multiplicity, with some restrictions.
For numerical semigroups with a specified list of (not necessarily minimal) generators, we describe the asymptotic distribution of factorization lengths with respect to an arbitrary modulus. In particular, we prove that the factorization lengths are equidistributed across all congruence classes that are not trivially ruled out by modular considerations.
We define a reflective numerical semigroup of genus $g$ as a numerical semigroup that has a certain reflective symmetry when viewed within $\mathbb{Z}$ as an array with $g$ columns. Equivalently, a reflective numerical semigroup has one gap in each residue class modulo $g$. In this paper, we give an explicit description for all reflective numerical semigroups. With this, we can describe the reflective members of well-known families of numerical semigroups as well as obtain formulas for the number of reflective numerical semigroups of a given genus or given Frobenius number.
We study the cyclotomic exponent sequence of a numerical semigroup $S,$ and we compute its values at the gaps of $S,$ the elements of $S$ with unique representations in terms of minimal generators, and the Betti elements $b\in S$ for which the set $\{a \in \operatorname{Betti}(S) : a \le_{S}b\}$ is totally ordered with respect to $\le_S$ (we write $a \le_S b$ whenever $a - b \in S,$ with $a,b\in S$). This allows us to characterize certain semigroup families, such as Betti-sorted or Betti-divisible numerical semigroups, as well as numerical semigroups with a unique Betti element, in terms of th…
In this paper, we generalize the work of Tuenter to give an identity which completely characterizes the complement of a numerical semigroup in terms of its Apéry sets. Using this result, we compute the $m$th power Sylvester and alternating Sylvester sums for free numerical semigroups. Explicit formulas are given for small $m$.
In this paper, we introduce the concept of Arf special gaps of an Arf numerical semigroup, and an algorithm for computing all Arf special gaps of a given Arf numerical semigroup. We introduce the concept of Arf-irreducible numerical semigroups, and draw conclusions about all these concepts. We give a system of generators for the Frobenius variety and variety of families of Arf numerical semigroups. Moreover, we obtain the minimal Arf system of generators of a given Arf numerical semigroup.
Let $S$ and $Δ$ be numerical semigroups. A numerical semigroup $S$ is an $\mathbf{I}(Δ)$-{\it semigroup} if $S\backslash \{0\}$ is an ideal of $Δ$. We will denote by $\mathcal{J}(Δ)=\{S \mid S \text{ is an $\mathbf{I}(Δ)$-semigroup} \}.$ We will say that $Δ$ is {\it an ideal extension of } $S$ if $S\in \mathcal{J}(Δ).$ In this work, we present an algorithm that allows to build all the ideal extensions of a numerical semigroup. We can recursively denote by $\mathcal{J}^0(\mathbb{N})=\mathbb{N},$ $\mathcal{J}^1(\mathbb{N})=\mathcal{J}(\mathbb{N})$ and $\mathcal{J}^{k+1}(\mathbb{N})=\mathcal{J}(\…
Semigroup's series for negative degrees of the gaps values in numerical semigroups generated by two integers and identities for the Hurwitz zeta functions
A numerical semigroup $S$ is cyclotomic if its semigroup polynomial $P_S$ is a product of cyclotomic polynomials. The number of irreducible factors of $P_S$ (with multiplicity) is the polynomial length $\ell(S)$ of $S.$ We show that a cyclotomic numerical semigroup is complete intersection if $\ell(S)\le 2$. This establishes a particular case of a conjecture of Ciolan, García-Sánchez and Moree (2016) claiming that every cyclotomic numerical semigroup is complete intersection. In addition, we investigate the relation between $\ell(S)$ and the embedding dimension of $S.$
