We present accurate many-body results of the electronic densities in several solid materials, including Si, NaCl, and Cu. These results are obtained using the ab initio auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) method working in a plane-wave basis with norm-conserving, multiple-projector pseudopotentials. AFQMC has been shown to be an excellent many-body total energy method. Computation of observables and correlation functions other than the ground-state energy requires back-propagation, whose adaption and implementation in the plane-wave basis AFQMC framework are discussed in the present paper. This development allows us to compute correlation functions, electronic densities and interatomic forces, paving the way for geometry optimizations and calculations of thermodynamic properties in solids. Finite supercell size effects are considerably more subtle in the many-body framework than in independent-electron calculations. We analyze the convergence of the electronic density, and obtain best estimates for the thermodynamic limit. The densities from several typical density functionals are benchmarked against our near-exact results. The electronic densities we have obtained can also be used to help construct improved density functionals.
We herein present a first-principles formulation of the Green-Kubo method that allows the accurate assessment of the non-radiative thermal conductivity of solid semiconductors and insulators in equilibrium ab initio molecular dynamics calculations. Using the virial for the nuclei, we propose a unique ab initio definition of the heat flux. Accurate size- and time convergence are achieved within moderate computational effort by a robust, asymptotically exact extrapolation scheme. We demonstrate the capabilities of the technique by investigating the thermal conductivity of extreme high and low he…
The auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) method provides a computational framework for solving the time-independent Schroedinger equation in atoms, molecules, solids, and a variety of model systems by stochastic sampling. We introduce the theory and formalism behind this framework, briefly discuss the key technical steps that turn it into an effective and practical computational method, present several illustrative results, and conclude with comments on the prospects of ab initio computation by this framework.
We present a theory for the ab-initio computation of NMR chemical shifts (sigma) in condensed matter systems, using periodic boundary conditions. Our approach can be applied to periodic systems such as crystals, surfaces, or polymers and, with a super-cell technique, to non-periodic systems such as amorphous materials, liquids, or solids with defects. We have computed the hydrogen sigma for a set of free molecules, for an ionic crystal, LiH, and for a H-bonded crystal, HF, using density functional theory in the local density approximation. The results are in excellent agreement with experiment…
An ab initio study of the electronic structures of solid metallotetrabenzoporphyrins (MTBPs) utilized in organic transistors and photovoltaics is presented. Bandstructures, densities of states, and orbitals are calculated for H2, Cu, Ni, and Zn core substitutions of the unit cell of solid TBP, as deposited via soluble precursors that are thermally annealed to produce polycrystalline, semiconducting thin-films. While the unit cells of the studied MTBPs are nearly isomorphous, substitution of the core atoms alters the structure of the bands around the energy bandgap and the composition of the de…
Predicting which crystalline modifications can be present in a chemical system requires the global exploration of its energy landscape. Due to the large computational effort involved, in the past this search for sufficiently stable minima has been performed employing a variety of empirical potentials and cost functions followed by a local optimization on the ab initio level. However, this entails the risk of overlooking important modifications that are not modeled accurately using empirical potentials. In order to overcome this critical limitation, we develop an approach to employ ab initio en…
A many-body expansion for mercury clusters of the form E = \sum_{i<j}Δε_{ij} + \sum_{i<j<k}Δε_{ijk} + ... \quad, does not converge smoothly with increasing cluster size towards the solid state. Even for smaller cluster sizes (up to n=6), where van der Waals forces still dominate, one observes bad convergence behaviour. For solid mercury the convergence of the many-body expansion can dramatically be improved by an incremental procedure within an embedded cluster approach. Here one adds the coupled cluster many-body electron correlation contributions of the embedded cluster to the bulk HF energy…
The melting curve of aluminium has been determined from 0 to ~150 GPa using first principles calculations of the free energies of both the solid and liquid. The calculations are based on density functional theory within the generalised gradient approximation using ultrasoft Vanderbilt pseudopotentials. The free energy of the harmonic solid has been calculated within the quasiharmonic approximation using the small-displacement method; the free energy of the liquid and the anharmonic correction to the free energy of the solid have been calculated via thermodynamic integration from suitable refer…
We develop a new first-principles approach to predict and understand rates of singlet fission with an ab initio Green's-function formalism based on many-body perturbation theory. Starting with singlet and triplet excitons computed from a GW plus Bethe-Salpeter equation approach, we calculate the exciton--bi-exciton coupling to lowest order in the Coulomb interaction, assuming a final state consisting of two non-interacting spin-correlated triplets with finite center-of-mass momentum. For crystalline pentacene, symmetries dictate that the only purely Coulombic fission decay from a bright single…
Knowledge of lattice anharmonicity is essential to elucidate distinctive thermal properties in crystalline solids. Yet, accurate \textit{ab initio} investigations of lattice anharmonicity encounter difficulties owing to the cumbersome computations. Here we introduce the phonon quasiparticle approach and review its application to various materials. This method efficiently and reliably addresses lattice anharmonicity by combining \textit{ab initio} molecular dynamics and lattice dynamics calculations. Thus, in principle, it accounts for full anharmonic effects and overcomes finite-size effects t…
We present in detail the formulation of the ab initio theory we have developed for the calculation of the macroscopic second-order susceptibility $χ^{(2)}$. We find a general expression for $χ^{(2)}$ valid for any fields, containing the ab initio relation between the \textit{microscopic} and \textit{macroscopic} formulation of the second-order responses. We consider the long wavelength limit and we develop our theory in the Time-Dependent Density-Functional Theory framework. This allows us to include straightforwardly many-body effects such as crystal local-field and excitonic effects. We comp…

While the ongoing search to discover new high-entropy systems is slowly expanding beyond metals, a rational and effective method for predicting "in silico" the solid solution forming ability of multi-component systems remains yet to be developed. In this article, we propose a novel high-throughput approach, called "LTVC", for estimating the transition temperature of a solid solution: ab-initio energies are incorporated into a mean field statistical mechanical model where an order parameter follows the evolution of disorder. The LTVC method is corroborated by Monte Carlo simulations and the res…
Thermal vibrations alter the external potential. Allen (Phys. Rev. B 18 (1978) 5217) proved that at finite temperatures the pseudopotential form factors are corrected by a Debye-Waller Factor (DWF). We generalize this result to the crystal potential. (The generalization to the all-electron case of the nuclear potential fails due to the breakdown of the rigid-atom approximation.) This finite temperature formalism only gives thermal-averaged properties and no dynamical information can be obtained. Hence, it is labeled the Quasi Ab Initio formalism. Analogous to the use of experimental lattice pa…
Using ab initio thermodynamics, the stability of a wide range of hydrocarbon adsorbates under various chemical vapor deposition (CVD) conditions (temperature, methane and hydrogen pressures) used in experimental graphene growth protocols at solid and liquid Cu surfaces has been explored. At the employed high growth temperatures around the melting point of Cu, we find that commonly used thermodynamic models such as the harmonic oscillator model may no longer be accurate. Instead, we account for the translational and rotational mobility of adsorbates using a recently developed hindered translato…
Point defects in solids may realize solid state quantum bits. The spin-orbit coupling in these point defects plays a key role in the magneto-optical properties that determine the conditions of quantum bit operation. However, experimental data and methods do not directly yield this highly important data, particularly, for such complex systems where dynamic Jahn-Teller (DJT) effect damps the spin-orbit interaction. Here, we show for an exemplary quantum bit, nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond, that \emph{ab initio} supercell density functional theory provide quantitative prediction for the …
Spin-phonon coupling is the main drive of spin relaxation and decoherence in solid-state semiconductors at finite temperature. Controlling this interaction is a central problem for many disciplines, ranging from magnetic resonance to quantum technologies. Spin relaxation theories have been developed for almost a century but often employ a phenomenological description of phonons and their coupling to spin, resulting in a non-predictive tool and hindering our detailed understanding of spin dynamics. Here we combine fourth-order time-local quantum master equations with advanced electronic structu…
Cu2Se and Cu2S are excellent model systems of superionic conductors with large diffusion coefficients that have been reported to exhibit different solid-liquid-like Cu-ion diffusion. In this paper, we clarify the atomic dynamics of these compounds with temperature-dependent ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments. Using the dynamical structure factor and Van-Hove correlation function, we interrogate the jump-time, hopping length distribution and associated diffusion coefficients. In cubic-Cu2Se at 500 K, we find solid-like diffusion wi…
We present quantum molecular dynamics calculations of thermophysical properties of solid and liquid zirconium in the vicinity of melting. An overview of available experimental data is also presented. We focus on the analysis of thermal expansion, molar enthalpy, resistivity and normal spectral emissivity of solid and liquid Zr. Possible reasons of discrepancies between the first-principle simulations and experiments are discussed. Our calculations reveal a significant volume change on melting in agreement with electrostatic levitation experiments. Meanwhile, we confirm a low value of enthalpy …
The structural, electronic, mechanical and thermodynamic properties of (Ti1-xMox)2AlC (0 < x < 0.20) were explored via density functional theory. The obtained lattice constants agree well with the experimental values. The electronic band structure confirms the metallic nature. Strengthening of covalent bonds due to Mo substitution is confirmed from the study of band structure, electronic density of states and charge density mapping. The elastic constants satisfy the mechanical stability criteria. Strengthening of covalent bonds leads to enhanced mechanical properties. (Ti1-xMox)2AlC compounds …
In 1965 Duwez \textit{et al.} reported having generated an amorphous, stable phase of palladium-silicon in the region 15 to 23 atomic percent (at. \%) silicon. These pioneering efforts have led to the development of solid materials that are now known as Bulk Metallic Glasses (BMG). In 2019 we discovered, computationally, that bulk amorphous Pd becomes magnetic, and so does porous/amorphous Pd. Puzzled by our results we undertook the study of several solid binary systems in the Pd-rich zone; in particular, the study of the glassy metallic alloy $a$-Pd$_{100-c}$Si$_{c}$, for $0 \leq c \leq 22$, …
Ab initio computations within the density functional theory are reported for the spin cross-over complex, [Fe(btz)$_{2}$(NCS)$_{2}$], where 3d$^6$ Fe$^{II}$ is characterized by High Spin (HS t$_{2g}^4$, e$_g^2$) and Low Spin (LS t$_{2g}^6$, e$_g^0$) states. Results of infra red and Raman spectra for the isolated molecule are complemented for the crystalline solid with a full account of the electronic band structure properties: the density of states assessing the crystal field effects and the chemical bonding assigning a specific role to the Fe-N interaction within the coordination sphere of Fe…
A general set of methods is presented for calculating chemical potentials in solid and liquid mixtures using {\em ab initio} techniques based on density functional theory (DFT). The methods are designed to give an {\em ab initio} approach to treating chemical equilibrium between coexisting solid and liquid solutions, and particularly the partitioning ratio of solutes between such solutions. For the liquid phase, the methods are based on the general technique of thermodynamic integration, applied to calculate the change of free energy associated with the continuous interconversion of solvent an…
A first-principles approach called the {\it{self-consistent quasiharmonic approximation}} (SC-QHA) method is formulated to calculate the thermal expansion, thermomechanics, and thermodynamic functions of solids at finite temperatures with both high efficiency and accuracy. The SC-QHA method requires fewer phonon calculations than the conventional QHA method, and also facilitates the convenient analysis of the microscopic origins of macroscopic thermal phenomena. The superior performance of the SC-QHA method is systematically examined by comparing it with the conventional QHA method and experim…
On the basis of a new ab initio, all-electron response scheme, formulated within time-dependent density-functional theory, we solve the puzzle posed by the anomalous dispersion of the plasmon linewidth in K. The key damping mechanism is shown to be decay into particle-hole pairs involving empty states of d-symmetry. While the effect of many-particle correlations is small, the correlations built into the "final-state" -d-bands play an important, and novel, role ---which is related to the phase-space complexity associated with these flat bands. Our case study of plasmon lifetime in K illustrates…
The decomposition of ethylene carbonate (EC) during the initial growth of solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) films at the solvent-graphitic anode interface is critical to lithium ion battery operations. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of explicit liquid EC/graphite interfaces are conducted to study these electrochemical reactions. We show that carbon edge terminations are crucial at this stage, and that achievable experimental conditions can lead to surprisingly fast EC breakdown mechanisms, yielding decomposition products seen in experiments but not previously predicted.
The use of solid-state electrolytes to provide safer, next-generation rechargeable batteries is becoming more feasible as new materials with greater stability and higher ionic diffusion coefficients are designed. However, accurate determination of diffusion coefficients in solids is problematic and reliable calculations are highly sought-after. In this paper we compare diffusion coefficients calculated using nonequilibrium and equilibrium ab initio molecular dynamics simulations for highly diffusive solid-state electrolytes for the first time, to demonstrate the accuracy that can be obtained. …
We report the structural, elastic and vibrational properties of five ionic-molecular solid oxidizers MNO$_3$ (M = Li, Na, K) and MClO$_3$ (M = Na, K). By treating long range electron-correlation effects, dispersion corrected method leads to more accurate predictions of structural properties and phase stability of KNO$_3$ polymorphs. The obtained elastic moduli show soft nature of these materials and are consistent with Ultrasonic Pulse Echo measurements. We made a complete assignment of vibrational modes which are in good accord with available experimental results. From calculated IR and Raman…
We perform density functional molecular dynamics simulations of liquid and solid MgSiO3 in the pressure range of 120-1600 GPa and for temperatures up to 20000 K in order to provide new insight into the nature of the liquid-liquid phase transition that was recently predicted on the basis of decaying laser shock wave experiments [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108 (2012) 065701]. However, our simulations did not show any signature of a phase transition in the liquid phase. We derive the equation of state for the liquid and solid phases and compute the shock Hugoniot curves. We discuss different thermodynamic …
We present an approach for ab initio many-body calculations of excited states in solids. Using auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo, we introduce an orthogonalization constraint to prevent collapse of the stochastic Slater determinants in the imaginary-time propagation. Trial wave functions from density-functional calculations are used for the constraints. Detailed band structures calculated for standard semiconductors are in good agreement with GW and experimental results. For the challenging ZnO wurtzite structure, we obtain a fundamental band gap of 3.26(16) eV, consistent with experiments.
We systematically derive low-energy effective Hamiltonians for molecular solids $β^\prime$-$X$[Pd(dmit)$_{2}$]$_{2}$ ($X$ represents a cation) using ab initio density functional theory calculations and clarify how the cation controls the inter-dimer transfer integrals and the interaction parameters. The effective models are solved using the exact diagonalization method and the antiferromagnetic ordered moment is shown to be significantly suppressed around the spin-liquid candidate of $X$=EtMe$_{3}$Sb, which is reported in experiments. We also show that both the geometrical frustration and the …
Metallic solids are a challenging target for wavefunction-based electronic structure theories and have not been studied in great detail by such methods. Here, we use coupled-cluster theory with single and double excitations (CCSD) to study the structure of solid lithium and aluminum using optimized Gaussian basis sets. We calculate the equilibrium lattice constant, bulk modulus, and cohesive energy and compare them to experimental values, finding accuracy comparable to common density functionals. Because the quantum chemical "gold standard" CCSD(T) (CCSD with perturbative triple excitations) i…
Atoms at liquid metal surfaces are known to form layers parallel to the surface. We analyze the two-dimensional arrangement of atoms within such layers at the surface of liquid sodium, using ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations based on density functional theory. Nearest neighbor distributions at the surface indicate mostly 5-fold coordination, though there are noticeable fractions of 4-fold and 6-fold coordinated atoms. Bond angle distributions suggest a movement toward the angles corresponding to a six-fold coordinated hexagonal arrangement of the atoms as the temperature is decreas…
GaN is a wide-bandgap semiconductor used in high-efficiency LEDs and solar cells. The solid is produced industrially at high chemical purities by deposition from a vapour phase, and oxygen may be included at this stage. Oxidation represents a potential path for tuning its properties without introducing more exotic elements or extreme processing conditions. In this work, ab initio computational methods are used to examine the energy potentials and electronic properties of different extents of oxidation in GaN. Solid-state vibrational properties of Ga, GaN, Ga2O3 and a single substitutional oxyg…

We use first principles molecular dynamics simulations coupled to the thermodynamic integration method to study the hcp-bcc transition and melting of beryllium up to a pressure of 1600~GPa. We derive the melting line by equating solid and liquid Gibbs free energies, and represent it by a Simon Glatzel fit $T_m= 1564~\text{K} (1 + P/(15.6032 ~\text{GPa}))^{0.383}$, which is in good agreement with previous two-phase simulations below 6000~K. We also derive the hcp-bcc solid-solid phase boundary and show the quasiharmonic approximation underestimates the stability of the hcp structure, predicting…
The accurate ab-initio simulation of periodic solids with strong correlations is one of the grand challenges of condensed matter. While mature methods exist for weakly correlated solids, the ab-initio description of strongly correlated systems is an active field of research. In this work, we show results for the single particle spectral function of the two correlated $d$-electron solids NiO and MnO from self-energy embedding theory. Unlike earlier work, the theory does not use any adjustable parameters and is fully ab-initio, while being able to treat both the strong correlation and the non-lo…
Ab initio wavefunction based methods are applied to the study of electron correlation effects on the band structure of oxide systems. We choose MgO as a prototype closed-shell ionic oxide. Our analysis is based on a local Hamiltonian approach and performed on finite fragments cut from the infinite solid. Localized Wannier functions and embedding potentials are obtained from prior periodic Hartree-Fock (HF) calculations. We investigate the role of various electron correlation effects in reducing the HF band gap and modifying the band widths. On-site and nearest-neighbor charge relaxation as wel…
Based on ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we determined the melting curve of magnesium (Mg) up to ~460 GPa using the solid-liquid coexistence method. Between ~30 and 100 GPa, our melting curve is noticeably lower than those from static experiments, but is in good agreement with recent shock experiments. Up to ~450 GPa, our melting curve is generally consistent with the melting points from first-principles calculations using the small-cell coexistence method. We found that, at high pressures of a few hundred GPa, due to the strong softening of interatomic interactions in the liquid pha…
A mixed quantum mechanical and Monte Carlo method for calculating Auger spectra from nanoclusters is presented. The approach, based on a cluster method, consists of two steps. Ab initio quantum mechanical calculations are first performed to obtain accurate energy and probability distributions of the generated Auger electrons. In a second step, using the calculated line shape as electron source, the Monte Carlo method is used to simulate the effect of inelastic losses on the original Auger line shape. The resulting spectrum can be directly compared to 'as-acquired' experimental spectra, thus av…
We present molecular dynamics simulations of solid NaNO$_2$ using pair potentials with the rigid-ion model. The crystal potential surface is calculated by using an \emph{a priori} method which integrates the \emph{ab initio} calculations with the Gordon-Kim electron gas theory. This approach is carefully examined by using different population analysis methods and comparing the intermolecular interactions resulting from this approach with those from the \emph{ab initio} Hartree-Fock calculations. Our numerics shows that the ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition in solid NaNO$_2$ is trigge…
Solid mercury in the rhombohedral structure is unbound within the self-consistent field (Hartree-Fock) approximation. The metallic binding is entirely due to electronic correlations. We determine the cohesive energy of solid mercury within an ab-initio many-body expansion for the correlation part. Electronic correlations in the $5d$ shell contribute about half to the cohesive energy. Relativistic effects are found to be very important. Very good agreement with the experimental value is obtained.
Lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON) is an amorphous solid-state lithium ion conductor displaying exemplary cyclability against lithium metal anodes. There is no definitive explanation for this stability due to the limited understanding of the structure of LiPON. We provide a structural model of RF-sputtered LiPON via experimental and computational spectroscopic methods. Information about the short-range structure results from 1D and 2D solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance experiments investigating chemical shift anisotropy and dipolar interactions. These results are compared with first pri…
We have performed orbital free ab initio molecular dynamics simulations in order to study the thermal behaviour of two open surfaces of solid metallic systems, namely the (110) face of fcc Al and the (10-10) face of hcp Mg. Our results reproduce qualitatively both the experimental measurements and previous ab initio calculations performed with the more costly Kohn-Sham approach of Density Functional Theory. These calculations can be viewed as a validation test of the orbital free method for semiinfinite surfaces, and the results underpin its reliability.
Raman spectra of thin solid electrolyte films obtained by sputtering a lithium sulfate target in nitrogen plasma are measured and compared to ab initio electronic structure calculations for clusters composed of 28 atoms. Agreement between measured and calculated spectra is obtained when oxygen atoms are replaced by nitrogen atoms and when the nitrogen atoms form bonds with each other. This suggests that the incorporation of nitrogen during the sputtering process leads to structures in the film, which prevent crystallization of these thin film salt glasses.
We present a new technique which allows the fully {\em ab initio} calculation of the chemical potential of a substitutional impurity in a high-temperature crystal, including harmonic and anharmonic lattice vibrations. The technique uses the combination of thermodynamic integration and reference models developed recently for the {\em ab initio} calculation of the free energy of liquids and anharmonic solids. We apply the technique to the case of the substitutional oxygen impurity in h.c.p. iron under Earth's core conditions, which earlier static {\em ab initio} calculations indicated to be ther…
