The temperature-induced orthorhombic to cubic phase transition in Li2C2 is a prototypical example of a solid to solid phase transformation between an ordered phase, which is well described within the phonon theory, and a dynamically disordered phase with rotating molecules, for which the standard phonon theory is not applicable. The transformation in Li2C2 happens from a phase with directionally ordered C2 dimers to a structure, where they are dynamically disorderd. We provide a description of this transition by employing ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) based stress-strain thermodynamic integration on a deformation path that connects the ordered and dynamically disordered phases. The free energy difference between the two phases is obtained. The entropy that stabilizes the dynamically disordered cubic phase is captured by the behavior of the stress on the deformation path. We also show that a combination of the stress-strain thermodynamic integration and machine learning force field methodologies appears as a promising path in studies of dynamically disordered materials.
Density functional theory calculations have been used to identify stable layered Li-$M$-B crystal structure phases derived from a recently proposed binary metal-sandwich (MS) lithium monoboride superconductor. We show that the MS lithium monoboride gains in stability when alloyed with electron-rich metal diborides; the resulting ordered Li$_{2(1-x)}M_x$B$_2$ ternary phases may form under normal synthesis conditions in a wide concentration range of $x$ for a number of group-III-V metals $M$. In an effort to pre-select compounds with the strongest electron-phonon coupling we examine the softenin…
Following the finite-temperature ab initio calculation framework based on the relativistic disordered local moments, we computationally demonstrate the possibility of doping-enhanced coercivity at high-temperatures, taking YCo$_5$ as a working material in order to extract the $3d$-electron part of the electronic structure of the rare-earth permanent magnets. Alkaline-earth dopants are shown to be the candidates to realize the proposed phenomenon.
Temperature dependence of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy and magnetization of the prototypical rare-earth magnet YCo$_5$ is calculated from first principles, utilizing the relativistic disordered local moment approach. We discuss a strategy to enhance the finite-temperature anisotropy field by hole doping, paving the way for an improvement of the coercivity near room temperature or higher.
Predicting material properties of disordered systems remains a long-standing and formidable challenge in rational materials design. To address this issue, we introduce an automated software framework capable of modeling partial occupation within disordered materials using a high-throughput (HT) first principles approach. At the heart of the approach is the construction of supercells containing a virtually equivalent stoichiometry to the disordered material. All unique supercell permutations are enumerated and material properties of each are determined via HT electronic structure calculations. …
An atomistic study of the thermal properties of lithiated molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is presented and an explanation for the experimentally determined anisotropic behavior of the in- and through-plane thermal conductivity is proposed. Configurations with different levels of lithium concentration are simulated using Density Functional Theory (DFT) and their structural, electronic, and thermal transport properties are evaluated as a function of the degree of lithiation. Comparisons between regular and disordered lithium distributions as well as to the experimental data reveal that the measured …
The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), which is essential for the stabilization of topologically non-trivial chiral magnetic textures such as skyrmions, is particularly strong in heterostructures of ultra-thin magnetic materials and heavy elements. We explore by density-functional theory calculations the possibility to modify the magnetic properties at Co/Pt interfaces with chemical disorder. In these systems, we find a particular robustness of the DMI against intermixing. Upon dusting the interface with a third element (all $4d$ transition metals and B, Cu, Au and Bi), a strong reductio…
By means of density functional calculations the magnetic and electronic properties and phase stabilities of the Heusler compounds Co$_2$MSi (with M=Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) were investigated. Based on the calculated results we predict the ferromagnetic phases of the compounds Co$_2$TiSi, Co$_2$VSi and Co$_2$CrSi to be half-metals. Of particular interest is Co$_2$CrSi because of its high density of majority spin states at Fermi energy in combination with a reasonably high estimated Curie temperature of 747K. The compounds Co$_2$TiSi and Co$_2$VSi are thermodynamically stable, whereas Co$_2$Cr…
We present an ab initio theory of transport quantities of metallic ferromagnets developed in the framework of the fully relativistic tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital method. The approach is based on the Kubo-Streda formula for the conductivity tensor, on the coherent potential approximation for random alloys, and on the concept of interatomic electron transport. The developed formalism is applied to pure 3d transition metals (Fe, Co, Ni) and to random Ni-based ferromagnetic alloys (Ni-Fe, Ni-Co, Ni-Mn). High values of the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR), found for Ni-rich alloys, ar…
We have investigated the electronic structure of ordered and disordered Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$ using {\it ab-initio} band structure methods. The effect of disorder was simulated within super-cell calculations to realize several configurations with mis-site disorders. It is found that such disorder effects destroy the half-metallic ferro-magnetic state of the ordered compound. It also leads to a substantial reduction of the magnetic moments at the Fe sites in the disordered configurations. Most interestingly, it is found for the disordered configurations, that the magnetic coupling within the Fe sub-l…
We present results of systematic fully relativistic first-principles calculations of the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) of a disordered and partially ordered tetragonal Fe-Co alloy using the coherent potential approximation (CPA). This alloy has recently become a promising system for thin ferromagnetic films with a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We find that existing theoretical approaches to homogeneous random bulk Fe-Co alloys, based on a simple virtual crystal approximation (VCA), overestimate the maximum MAE values obtained in the CPA by a factor of four. This pronounced dif…
Although Boron nitride (BN) is a well-known compound widely used for engineering and scientific purposes, the phase stability of its polymorphs, one of its most fundamental properties, is still under debate. The ab initio determination of the ground state of the BN polymorphs, such as hexagonal and zinc-blende, is difficult because of the elusive Van der Waals interaction, which plays a decisive role in some of the polymorphs, making quantitative prediction highly challenging. Hence, despite multiple theoretical studies, there has been no consensus on the ground state yet, primarily due to con…
A reliable prediction of interatomic force constants in disordered alloys is an outstanding problem. This is due to the need for a proper treatment of multisite (atleast pair) correlation within a random environment. The situation becomes even more challenging for systems with large difference in atomic size and mass. We propose a systematic density functional theory (DFT) based study to predict the ab-initio force constants in random alloys. The method is based on a marriage between special quasirandom structures (SQS) and the augmented space recursion (ASR) to calculate phonon spectra, densi…
In the substitutionally disordered narrow-gap semiconductor Pb_{1-x}Ge_xTe, a finite-temperature cubic-rhombohedral transition appears above a critical concentration $x \approx 0.005$. As a first step towards a first-principles investigation of this transition in the disordered system, a (hypothetical) ordered cubic Pb_3GeTe_4 supercell is studied. First principles density-functional calculations of total energies and linear response functions are performed using the conjugate-gradients method with ab initio pseudopotentials and a plane-wave basis set. Unstable modes in Pb_3GeTe_4 are found, d…
By employing first-principles metadynamics simulations, we explore the 300 K structures of solid hydrogen over the pressure range 150-300 GPa. At 200 GPa, we find the ambient-pressure disordered hexagonal close-packed (hcp) phase transited into an insulating partially ordered hcp phase (po-hcp), a mixture of ordered graphene-like H2 layers and the other layers of weakly coupled, disordered H2 molecules. Within this phase, hydrogen remains in paired states with creation of shorter intra-molecular bonds, which are responsible for the very high experimental Raman peak above 4000 cm-1. At 275 GPa,…
A coherent description of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is presented that is applicable to pure as well as disordered alloy systems by treating all sources of the AHE on equal footing. This is achieved by an implementation of the Kubo-Středa equation using the fully relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) Green's function method in combination with the Coherent Potential Approximation (CPA) alloy theory. Applications to the pure elemental ferromagnets bcc-Fe and fcc-Ni led to results in full accordance with previous work. For the alloy systems fcc-Fe$_x$Pd$_{1-x}$ and fcc-Ni$_x$Pd$_{1-x}$ …
Neutron diffraction and ab initio studies were carried out on Mn2V1-xCoxGa (x=0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1) Heusler alloys which exhibits high TC fully compensated ferrimagnetic characteristic for x=0.5. A combined analysis of neutron diffraction and ab initio calculations revealed the crystal structure and magnetic configuration which could not be determined from the X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements. As reported earlier, Rietveld refinement of neutron diffraction data confirmed L21 structure for Mn2VGa and Xa structure for Mn2CoGa. The alloys with x=0.25 and 0.5 possess L21 structure with…
We present a theoretical scheme to calculate the elastic constants of magnetic materials in the high-temperature paramagnetic state. Our approach is based on a combination of disordered local moments picture and ab initio molecular dynamics (DLM-MD). Moreover, we investigate a possibility to enhance the efficiency of the simulations of elastic properties using recently introduced method: symmetry imposed force constant temperature dependent effective potential (SIFC-TDEP). We have chosen cubic paramagnetic CrN as a model system. This is done due to its technological importance and its demonstr…
We present a theoretical first-principles method to calculate the free energy of a magnetic system in its high-temperature paramagnetic phase, including vibrational, electronic, and magnetic contributions. The method for calculating free energies is based on ab-initio molecular dynamics and combines a treatment of disordered magnetism using disordered local moments molecular dynamics (DLM-MD) with the temperature dependent effective potential (TDEP) method to obtain the vibrational contribution to the free energy. We illustrate the applicability of the method by obtaining the anharmonic free e…
Using ab initio thermodynamics, the stability of a wide range of hydrocarbon adsorbates under various chemical vapor deposition (CVD) conditions (temperature, methane and hydrogen pressures) used in experimental graphene growth protocols at solid and liquid Cu surfaces has been explored. At the employed high growth temperatures around the melting point of Cu, we find that commonly used thermodynamic models such as the harmonic oscillator model may no longer be accurate. Instead, we account for the translational and rotational mobility of adsorbates using a recently developed hindered translato…
We present an ab initio calculation of the DC conductivity of amorphous silicon and hydrogenated amorphous silicon. The Kubo-Greenwood formula is used to obtain the DC conductivity, by thermal averaging over extended dynamical simulation. Its application to disordered solids is discussed. The conductivity is computed for a wide range of temperatures and doping is explored in a naive way by shifting the Fermi level. We observed the Meyer-Neldel rule for the electrical conductivity with E_MNR = 0.06 eV and a temperature coefficient of resistance, TCR ~ -2.0% K^-1 for a-Si:H. In general, experime…
We present an ab-initio study of boron nitride as well as carbon allotropes. Their relative thermodynamic stabilities and structural phase transitions from low- to high-density phases are investigated. Pressure-temperature phase diagrams are calculated and compared to experimental findings. The calculations are performed using quantum chemical wavefunction based as well as density functional theories. Our findings reveal that predicted energy differences often depend significantly on the choice of the employed method. Comparison between calculated and experimental results allows for benchmarki…
Equation of state for chromium nitride has been debated in the literature in connection with a proposed collapse of its bulk modulus following the pressure induced transition from the paramagnetic cubic phase to the antiferromagnetic orthorhombic phase [F. Rivadulla et al., Nat Mater 8, 974 (2009); B. Alling et al., Nat Mater 9, 283 (2010)]. Experimentally the measurements are complicated due to the low transition pressure, while theoretically the simulation of magnetic disorder represent a major challenge. Here a first-principles method is suggested for the calculation of thermodynamic proper…
We develop an empirical potential for silicon which represents a considerable improvement over existing models in describing local bonding for bulk defects and disordered phases. The model consists of two- and three-body interactions with theoretically motivated functional forms that capture chemical and physical trends as explained in a companion paper. The numerical parameters in the functional form are obtained by fitting to a set of ab initio results from quantum mechanical calculations based on density functional theory in the local density approximation, which include various bulk phases…
The dynamical and thermodynamic phase stabilities of the stoichiometric compound CrN including different structural and magnetic configurations are comprehensively investigated using a first-principles density-functional-theory (DFT) plus U approach in conjunction with experimental measurements of the thermal expansion. Comparing DFT and DFT+U results with experimental data reveals that the treatment of electron correlations using methods beyond standard DFT is crucial. The non-magnetic face-centered cubic B1-CrN phase is both, elastically and dynamically unstable, even under high pressure, wh…
The cubic lattice symmetry of ferromagnetic homogeneously disordered alloys is when a compositional modulation is imposed. This can have a profound influence on the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE). We describe our ab-initio theory of this effect and use the framework of concentration waves with the electronic structure described within the spin-polarised relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker coherent-potential approximation. We find that ordering produces a 2 order of magnitude increase in the MAE as well as altering the equilibrium direction of magnetisation. Using the same theoretic…
Structural evolution of a prospective hydrogen storage material, ammonia borane NH3BH3, has been studied at high pressures up to 12 GPa and at low temperatures by synchrotron powder diffraction. At 293 K and above 1.1 GPa a disordered I4mm structure reversibly transforms into a new ordered phase. Its Cmc21 structure was solved from the diffraction data, the positions of N and B atoms and the orientation of NH3 and BH3 groups were finally assigned with the help of density functional theory calculations. Group-theoretical analysis identifies a single two-component order parameter, combining orde…
Based on a previously proposed thermodynamic analysis, we study the relative stabilities of five Si phases under uniaxial compression using ab initio methods. The five phases are diamond, beta-tin, sh, sc, and hcp structures. The possible phase-transition patterns were investigated by considering the phase transitions between any two chosen phases of the five phases. By analyzing the different conributions to the relative pahse stability, we identified the most important factors in reducing the phase-transition pressures at uniaxial compression. We also show that it is possible to have phase t…
Transport properties of permalloy doped with V, Co, Pt, and Au are explored via ab-initio calculations. The Kubo-Bastin formula is evaluated within the fully relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker Green function formalism. Finite temperature effects are treated by means of the alloy analogy model. It is shown that the fact that the host is disordered and not crystalline has a profound effect on how the conductivities characterizing the anomalous Hall effect and the spin Hall effect depend on the dopant concentration. Several relationships between quantities characterizing charge and spin transpor…
The stabilities of $(BN)_x(C_2)_{1-x}$ alloys and related superlattices are investigated by ab initio pseudopotential calculations. We find that the $(BN)_1/(C_2)_1$ superlattices in (111) orientations have the lowest formation energy among many short-range ordered $BNC_2$ structures due to the smallest number of B-C and C-N bonds. Based on the calculated formation energies at several compositions and for various ordered structures and assuming thermodynamic equilibrium, the solid solution phase diagram of $(BN)_x(C_2)_{1-x}$ alloys is constructed. We find that the complete miscibility of $(BN…
While several studies confirmed that machine-learned potentials (MLPs) can provide accurate free energies for determining phase stabilities, the abilities of MLPs for efficiently constructing a full phase diagram of multi-component systems are yet to be established. In this work, by employing neural network interatomic potentials (NNPs), we demonstrate construction of the MgO-CaO eutectic phase diagram with temperatures up to 3400 K, which includes liquid phases. The NNP is trained over trajectories of various solid and liquid phases at several compositions that are calculated within the densi…
The local dynamics of the lead-free relaxor $0.964\mathrm{Na}_{1/2}\mathrm{Bi}_{1/2}\mathrm{TiO}_3-0.036\mathrm{BaTiO}_3$ (NBT-3.6BT) have been investigated by a combination of quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. In a previous paper, we were able to show that the tetragonal platelets in the microstructure are crucial for understanding the dielectric properties of NBT-3.6BT [F. Pforr et al., Phys. Rev. B 94, 014105 (2016)]. To investigate their dynamics, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations were carried out using $\mathrm{Na}_{1/2}\mathrm{Bi}…
Knowledge of the electronic stopping curve for swift ions, $S_e(v)$, particularly around the Bragg peak, is important for understanding radiation damage. Experimentally, however, the determination of such feature for light ions is very challenging, especially in disordered systems such as liquid water and biological tissue. Recent developments in real-time time-dependent density functional theory (rt-TDDFT) have enabled the calculation of $S_e(v)$ along nm-sized trajectories. However, it is still a challenge to obtain a meaningful statistically averaged $S_e(v)$ that can be compared to observa…
The electronic, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties of ordered and chemically disordered FeRh alloy is studied using ab-initio methods. The equiatomic Fe$_{50}$Rh$_{50}$ composition is reported for both ordered and disordered phases. Chemically disordered Fe$_x$Rh$_{100-x}$ is reported and the effect of disorder on electronic and magnetic properties is discussed. Further, We have reported the effects of stress and strain in both the order and disorder phases. The result is only for the cubic phase and no distortion has been taken into consideration. This study is motivated by the recent res…
Effective Hamiltonians, when used in tandem with statistical mechanics techniques, offer a rigorous connection between 0 Kelvin ab-initio predictions and finite temperature experimental observations. For alloys, cluster expansion Hamiltonians can coarse-grain out the complex, many-body electron problem of density functional theory, yielding a series of simple site-wise basis functions (e.g., products of site occupancy variables) on an atomic scale. The resulting energy polynomial is computationally inexpensive, and hence suitable for the (tens of) thousands of calculations of large systems req…
Within density functional theory, we study bulk band structure and surface states of BiTeBr. We consider both ordered and disordered phases which differ in atomic order in the Te-Br sublattice. On the basis of relativistic ab-initio calculations, we show that the ordered BiTeBr is energetically preferable as compared with the disordered one. We demonstrate that both Te- and Br-terminated surfaces of the ordered BiTeBr hold surface states with a giant spin-orbit splitting. The Te-terminated surface-state spin splitting has the Rashba-type behavior with the coupling parameter α_R ~ 2 eVÅ.
We describe an ab initio theory of finite temperature magnetism in strongly-correlated electron systems. The formalism is based on spin density functional theory, with a self-interaction corrected local spin density approximation (SIC-LSDA). The self-interaction correction is implemented locally, within the KKR multiple-scattering method. Thermally induced magnetic fluctuations are treated using a mean-field `disordered local moment' (DLM) approach and at no stage is there a fitting to an effective Heisenberg model. We apply the theory to the 3d transition metal oxides, where our calculations …
We describe magneto-, baro- and elastocaloric effects (MCEs, BCEs and eCEs) in materials which possess both discontinuous (first-order) and continuous (second-order) magnetic phase transitions. Our ab initio theory of the interacting electrons of materials in terms of disordered local moments (DLMs) has produced explicit mechanisms for the drivers of these transitions and here we study associated caloric effects in three case studies where both types of transition are evident. Our earlier work had described FeRh's magnetic phase diagram and large MCE. Here we present calculations of its substa…
In a self-consistent semi-empirical numerical approach based on ab-initio-calculations for small samples, we evaluate the GMR effect for disordered (001)-(3--Fe/3--V)$_\infty$ multilayers by means of a Kubo formalism. We consider four different types of disorder arrangements: In case (i) and (ii), the disorder consists in the random interchange of some Fe and V atoms, respectively, at interface layers; in case (iii) in the formation of small groups of three substitutional Fe atoms in a V interface layer and a similar V group in a Fe layer at a different interface; and for case (iv) in the subs…
The insulating state of matter can be probed by means of a ground state geometrical marker, which is closely related to the modern theory of polarization (based on a Berry phase). In the present work we show that this marker can be applied to determine the metal-insulator transition in disordered systems. In particular, for non-interacting systems the geometrical marker can be obtained from the configurational average of the norm-squared one-body density matrix, which can be calculated within open as well as periodic boundary conditions. This is in sharp contrast to a classification based on t…
We describe an ab-initio disordered local moment theory for long period magnetic phases and investigate the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the magnetic states in the heavy rare earth elements (HRE), namely paramagnetic, conical and helical anti-ferromagnetic(HAFM), fan and ferromagnetic (FM) states. We obtain a generic HRE magnetic phase diagram which is consequent on the response of the common HRE valence electronic structure to f-electron magnetic moment ordering. The theory directly links the first order HAFM-FM transition to the loss of Fermi surface nesting as well as provid…
Abstract: Using ab initio calculations supported by experimental transport measurements, we present the first credible candidate for the realization of a disorder-induced Topological Anderson Insulator in a real material system. High energy reactive ball-milling produces a polymorph of Cu2ZnSnS4 with high cation disorder, which shows an inverted ordering of bands at the Brillouin zone center, in contrast to its ordered phase. Adiabatic continuity arguments establish that this disordered Cu2ZnSnS4 can be connected to the closely related Cu2ZnSnSe4, previously predicted to be a 3D topological in…
Ab initio calculation results for the electronic structure of disordered bcc Fe(x)Al(1-x) (0.4<x<0.75), Co(x)Al(1-x) and Ni(x)Al(1-x) (x=0.4; 0.5; 0.6) alloys near the 1:1 stoichiometry, as well as of the ordered B2 (FeAl, CoAl, NiAl) phases with point defects are presented. The calculations were performed using the coherent potential approximation within the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method (KKR-CPA) for the disordered case and the tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital (TB-LMTO) method for the intermetallic compounds. We studied in particular the onset of magnetism in Fe-Al and Co-Al systems a…
Supercells are often used in ab initio calculations to model compound alloys, surfaces and defects. One of the main challenges of supercell electronic structure calculations is to recover the Bloch character of electronic eigenstates perturbed by disorder. Here we apply the spectral weight approach to unfolding the electronic structure of group III-V and II-VI semiconductor solid solutions. The illustrative examples include: formation of donor-like states in dilute Ga(PN) and associated enhancement of its optical activity, direct observation of the valence band anticrossing in dilute GaAs:Bi, …
We present an \textit{ab-initio} disordered local moment theory for the Gibbs free energy of a magnetic material. Two central objects are calculated: the lattice Fourier transform of the direct local moment - local moment correlation functions in the paramagnetic state and local internal magnetic fields as functions of magnetic order. We identify the potentially most stable magnetic phases from the first, which can include non-collinear and long-period states in complex multi-atom unit cells, and extract higher order correlations among the local moments from the second. We propose that these l…
The evolution of electronic wave packets (WPs) through grain boundaries (GBs) of various structures in graphene was investigated by the numerical solution of the time-dependent Schroedinger equation. WPs were injected from a simulated STM tip placed above one of the grains. Electronic structure of the GBs was calculated by ab-initio and tight-binding methods. Two main factors governing the energy dependence of the transport have been identified: the misorientation angle of the two adjacent graphene grains and the atomic structure of the GB. In case of an ordered GB made of a periodic repetitio…

An ideal atomistic model of a disordered material should contradict no experiments, and should also be consistent with accurate force fields (either {\it ab initio}or empirical). We make significant progress toward jointly satisfying {\it both} of these criteria using a hybrid reverse Monte Carlo approach in conjunction with approximate first principles molecular dynamics. We illustrate the method by studying the complex binary glassy material g-GeSe$_2$. By constraining the model to agree with partial structure factors and {\it ab initio} simulation, we obtain a 647-atom model in close agreeme…

The calculation of free energies from first principles in materials is a formidable task which enables the prediction of phase stability with high accuracy; these calculations are complicated in magnetic materials by the interplay of electronic, magnetic, and vibrational degrees of freedom. In this work, we show the feasibility and accuracy of the calculation of phase stability in magnetic systems with ab initio methods and thermodynamic integration by sampling the magnetic and vibrational phase space with coupled atomistic spin dynamics-ab initio molecular dynamics (ASD-AIMD) simulations [Sto…
We describe an ab-initio Disordered Local Moment Theory for materials with quenched static compositional disorder traversing first order magnetic phase transitions. It accounts quantitatively for metamagnetic changes and the magnetocaloric effect. For perfect stoichiometric B2-ordered FeRh, we calculate the transition temperature of the ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic transition to be $T_t =$ 495K and a maximum isothermal entropy change in 2 Tesla of $|ΔS|= 21.1$ J~K$^{-1}$~kg$^{-1}$. A large (40\%) component of $|ΔS|$ is electronic. The transition results from a fine balance of competing elec…
We have performed experimental and theoretical studies of the structural stability of YAsO4 and YCrO4 at high pressures. X-ray diffraction experiments together with ab initio total-energy and lattice-dynamics calculations have allowed us to completely characterize a pressure-induced structural phase transition from the zircon to the scheelite structure in both compounds. Furthermore, total-energy calculations have been performed to check the relative stabilities of different candidate structures at different pressures and allow us to propose for YAsO4 the zircon \rightarrow scheelite \rightarr…
