This work is concerned with the existence and uniqueness of boundary value problems defined on semi-infinite intervals. These kinds of problems seldom admit exactly known solutions and, therefore, the theoretical information on their well-posedness is essential before attempting to derive an approximate solution by analytical or numerical means. Our utmost contribution in this context is the definition of a numerical test for investigating the existence and uniqueness of solutions of boundary problems defined on semi-infinite intervals. The main result is given by a theorem relating the existence and uniqueness question to the number of real zeros of a function implicitly defined within the formulation of the iterative transformation method. As a consequence, we can investigate the existence and uniqueness of solutions by studying the behaviour of that function. Within such a context the numerical test is illustrated by two examples where we find meaningful numerical results.
In this paper, we propose a review of the free boundary formulation for BVPs defined on semi-infinite intervals. The main idea and theorem are illustrated, for the reader convenience, by using a class of second-order BVPs. Moreover, we are able to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach using two examples where the exact solution both for the BVPs and their \FBF \ are available. Then, we describe the free boundary formulation for a general class of BVPs governed by an $n$-order differential equation. In this context, we report three problems solved using the free boundary formulation. …
In this paper we consider a class of fourth order nonlinear integro-differential equations with Navier boundary conditions. By the reduction of the problem to operator equation we establish the existence and uniqueness of solution and construct a numerical method for solving it. We prove that the method is of second order accuracy and obtain an estimate for total error. Some examples demonstrate the validity of the obtained theoretical results and the efficiency of the numerical method.
In this paper, we propose a multirate iterative scheme with multiphysics finite element method for a fluid-saturated poroelasticity model. Firstly, we reformulate the original model into a fluid coupled problem to apply the multiphysics finite element method for the discretization of the space variables, and we design a multirate iterative scheme on the time scale which solve a generalized Stokes problem in the coarse time size and solve the diffusion problem in the finer time size according to the characteristics of the poroelasticity problem. Secondly, we prove that the multirate iterative s…

In this paper we consider a boundary value problem for fully fourth order nonlinear functional differential equation which contains all lower derivatives of proportional delay arguments. By the reduction of the problem to operator equation for the right hand side nonlinear function we establish the existence and uniqueness of solution and construct iterative methods on both continuous and discrete levels for solving it. We obtain the total error estimate for the discrete iterative solution. Many examples demonstrate the validity of the obtained theoretical results and the efficiency of the num…
This article presents a new primal-dual weak Galerkin method for second order elliptic equations in non-divergence form. The new method is devised as a constrained $L^p$-optimization problem with constraints that mimic the second order elliptic equation by using the discrete weak Hessian locally on each element. An equivalent min-max characterization is derived to show the existence and uniqueness of the numerical solution. Optimal order error estimates are established for the numerical solution under the discrete $W^{2,p}$ norm, as well as the standard $W^{1,p}$ and $L^p$ norms. An equivalent…
The scaling of the exact solution of a hyperbolic balance law generates a family of scaled problems in which the source term does not depend on the current solution. These problems are used to construct a sequence of solutions whose limiting function solves the original hyperbolic problem. Thus this gives rise to an iterative procedure. Its convergence is demonstrated both theoretically and analytically. The analytical demonstration is in terms of a local in time convergence and existence theorem in the $L^2$ framework for the class of problems in which the source term $s(q)$ is bounded, with …
The problem of recovering coefficients in a diffusion equation is one of the basic inverse problems. Perhaps the most important term is the one that couples the length and time scales and is often referred to as {\it the\/} diffusion coefficient $a$ in $u_t - \nabla(a\nabla u) = f$. In this paper we seek the unknown $a$ assuming that $a=a(u)$ depends only on the value of the solution at a given point. Such diffusion models are the basic of a wide range of physical phenomena such as nonlinear heat conduction, chemical mixing and population dynamics. We shall look at two types of overposed data …
Existence and uniqueness as well as the iterative approximation of fixed points of enriched almost contractions in Banach spaces are studied. The obtained results are generalizations of the great majority of metric fixed point theorems, in the setting of a Banach space. The main tool used in the investigations is to work with the averaged operator $T_λ$ instead of the original operator $T$. The effectiveness of the new results thus derived is illustrated by appropriate examples. An application of the strong convergence theorems to solving a variational inequality is also presented.
