In this work, we consider a boundary value problem for nonlinear triharmonic equation. Due to the reduction of nonlinear boundary value problems to operator equation for nonlinear terms we establish the existence, uniqueness and positivity of solution. More importantly, we design an iterative method at both continuous and discrete level for numerical solution of the problem. An analysis of actual total error of the obtained discrete solution is made. Some examples demonstrate the applicability of the theoretical results on qualitative aspects and the efficiency of the iterative method.
In this work, we consider the Dirichlet boundary value problem for nonlinear triharmonic equation. Due to the reduction of the nonlinear boundary value problem to operator equation for the nonlinear term and the unknown second normal derivative we design an iterative method at both continuous and discrete level for numerical solution of the problem. Some examples demonstrate that the numerical method is of fourth order convergence.

In this paper we consider a class of fourth order nonlinear integro-differential equations with Navier boundary conditions. By the reduction of the problem to operator equation we establish the existence and uniqueness of solution and construct a numerical method for solving it. We prove that the method is of second order accuracy and obtain an estimate for total error. Some examples demonstrate the validity of the obtained theoretical results and the efficiency of the numerical method.
We propose a fourth-order unfitted characteristic finite element method to solve the advection-diffusion equation on time-varying domains. Based on a characteristic-Galerkin formulation, our method combines the cubic MARS method for interface tracking, the fourth-order backward differentiation formula for temporal integration, and an unfitted finite element method for spatial discretization. Our convergence analysis includes errors of discretely representing the moving boundary, tracing boundary markers, and the spatial discretization and the temporal integration of the governing equation. This paper considers a two-step fourth-order modified explicit Euler/Crank-Nicolson numerical method for solving the time-variable fractional mobile-immobile advection-dispersion model subjects to suitable initial and boundary conditions. Both stability and error estimates of the new approach are deeply analyzed in the $L^{\infty}(0,T;L^{2})$-norm. The theoretical studies show that the proposed technique is unconditionally stable with convergence of order $O(k+h^{4})$, where $h$ and $k$ are space step and time step, respectively. This result indicate that the two-step fourth-order formulation …
A fourth-order exponential time differencing scheme with real and distinct poles rational approximation for solving non-linear reaction-diffusion systems
We propose two finite-difference algorithms of fourth order of accuracy for solving the initial problem of the Zakharov-Shabat system. Both schemes have the exponential form and conserve quadratic invariant of Zakharov-Shabat system. The second scheme contains the spectral parameter in exponent only and allows to apply the fast computational algorithm.
In this paper we consider a boundary value problem for fully fourth order nonlinear functional differential equation which contains all lower derivatives of proportional delay arguments. By the reduction of the problem to operator equation for the right hand side nonlinear function we establish the existence and uniqueness of solution and construct iterative methods on both continuous and discrete levels for solving it. We obtain the total error estimate for the discrete iterative solution. Many examples demonstrate the validity of the obtained theoretical results and the efficiency of the num…
Lower-order $P_2$ finite elements are popular for solving fourth-order elliptic PDEs when the solution has limited regularity. A priori and a posteriori error estimates for von Karman equations are considered in Carstensen et al. (2019, 2020) with respect to different mesh dependent norms which involve different jump and penalization terms. This paper addresses the question, whether they are comparable with respect to a common norm. This article establishes that the errors for the quadratic symmetric interior discontinuous Galerkin, $C^0$ interior penalty and nonconforming Morley finite elemen…

This paper develops a two-level fourth-order scheme for solving time-fractional convection-diffusion-reaction equation with variable coefficients subjected to suitable initial and boundary conditions. The basis properties of the new approach are investigated and both stability and error estimates of the proposed numerical scheme are deeply analyzed in the $L^{\infty}(0,T;L^{2})$-norm. The theory indicates that the method is unconditionally stable with convergence of order $O(k^{2-\fracλ{2}}+h^{4})$, where $k$ and $h$ are time step and mesh size, respectively, and $λ\in(0,1)$. This result sugge…
For a class of fourth order gradient flow problems, integration of the scalar auxiliary variable (SAV) time discretization with the penalty-free discontinuous Galerkin (DG) spatial discretization leads to SAV-DG schemes. These schemes are linear and shown unconditionally energy stable. But the reduced linear systems are rather expensive to solve due to the dense coefficient matrices. In this paper, we provide a procedure to pre-evaluate the auxiliary variable in the piecewise polynomial space. As a result, the computational complexity of $O(\mathcal{N}^2)$ reduces to $O(\mathcal{N})$ when expl…
We present unconditionally energy stable Runge-Kutta (RK) discontinuous Galerkin (DG) schemes for solving a class of fourth order gradient flows. Our algorithm is geared toward arbitrarily high order approximations in both space and time, while energy dissipation remains preserved without imposing any restriction on time steps and meshes. We achieve this in two steps. First, taking advantage of the penalty free DG method introduced by Liu and Yin [J Sci. Comput. 77:467--501, 2018] for spatial discretization, we reformulate an extended linearized ODE system by the energy quadratization (EQ) app…
A crucial part of successful wave propagation related inverse problems is an efficient and accurate numerical scheme for solving the seismic wave equations. In particular, the numerical solution to a multi-dimensional Helmholtz equation can be troublesome when the perfectly matched layer (PML) boundary condition is implemented. In this paper, we present a general approach for constructing fourth-order finite difference schemes for the Helmholtz equation with PML in the two-dimensional domain based on point-weighting strategy. Particularly, we develop two optimal fourth-order finite difference …

In this paper, we introduce a fourth-order accurate finite element method for incompressible variable density flow. The method is implicit in time and constructed with the Taylor series technique, and uses standard high-order Lagrange basis functions in space. Taylor series time-stepping relies on time derivative correction terms to achieve high-order accuracy. We provide detailed algorithms to approximate the time derivatives of the variable density Navier-Stokes equations. Numerical validations confirm a fourth-order accuracy for smooth problems. We also numerically illustrate that the Taylo…
To achieve efficient and accurate long-time integration, we propose a fast, accurate, and stable high-order numerical method for solving fractional-in-space reaction-diffusion equations. The proposed method is explicit in nature and utilizes the fourth-order compact finite difference scheme and matrix transfer technique (MTT) in space with FFT-based implementation. Time integration is done through the accurate fourth-order modified exponential time differencing Runge-Kutta scheme. The linear stability analysis and various numerical experiments including two-dimensional (2D) Fitzhugh-Nagumo, Gi…
