We study the response function which describes the evolution of energy density induced by an initial disturbance for a Bjorken-expanding quark-gluon plasma (QGP). We compare the results from solving linearized Boltzmann equation under the relaxation time approximation with those from viscous hydrodynamics. While in long time limit the response becomes hydrodynamics, the non-hydrodynamic response is important at intermediate times when excitations of wavelength larger than the inverse of the relaxation time $1/τ_{R}$ are not fully damped. Therefore observables sensitive to the jet-induced medium excitations might be employed to explore the properties of QGP at the "mesoscopic scale".
Wakes created by a parton moving through a static and infinitely extended quark-gluon plasma are considered. In contrast to former investigations collisions within the quark-gluon plasma are taken into account using a transport theoretical approach (Boltzmann equation) with a Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook collision term. Within this model it is shown that the wake structure changes significantly compared to the collisionless case.
We calculate the wake induced in a hot QCD plasma by a fast parton in the framework of linear response theory. We discuss two scenarios: ($i$) a weakly coupled quark-gluon plasma described by hard-thermal loop perturbation theory and ($ii$) a strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma which resembles a quantum liquid. We show that a Mach cone can appear in the second scenario, but not in the first one
Within the framework of Boltzmann transport equation with a Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) collisional kernel, we study the wake potential induced by fast partons traveling through the high-temperature QCD plasma which is anisotropic in momentum-space. We calculate the dielectric response function of a collisional anisotropic quark-gluon plasma (AQGP) for small $ξ$ (anisotropic parameter) limit. Using this, the wake potential for various combinations of the anisotropy parameter ($ξ$) and the collision rate ($ν$) is evaluated both for parallel and perpendicular directions of motion of the fast par…
The diffusion wake accompanying the jet-induced Mach cone provides a unique probe of the properties of quark-gluon plasma in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. It can be characterized by a depletion of soft hadrons in the opposite direction of the propagating jet. We explore the 3D structure of the diffusion wake induced by $γ$-triggered jets in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC energy within the coupled linear Boltzmann transport and hydro model. We identify a valley structure caused by the diffusion wake on top of a ridge from the initial multiple parton interaction (MPI) in jet-hadron correlation …
We follow Quark-gluon transport theory and analyse singularities of the ultra-relativistic and spherical expanding quark-gluon plasma. Within the linearized QCD oscillations and instabilities of the ultra-relativistic and spherical symmetric expanding quark-gluon plasma near global thermodynamical equilibrium are investigated in dependence on a chemical potential mu(T) of non-strange light quarks and antiquarks, a strange quark mass m_s, a temperature T and a hydrodynamical velocity $u$. We calculate the chromoelectric permeability tensor for the quark-gluon plasma at rest and ultra-relativist…
We calculate the wake in charge density and the wake potential due to the passage of a fast parton in an anisotropic quark gluon plasma(AQGP). For the sake of simplicity small $ξ$(anisotropic parameter) limit has been considered. When the velocity($v$) of the jet is parallel to the anisotropy direction(${\hat n}$) and remains below the phase velocity($v_p$), the wake in induced charge density shows a little oscillatory behavior in AQGP, contrary to the isotropic case. With the jet velocity greater than the phase velocity, the oscillatory behavior increases with $ξ$. Also for $v>v_p$ one observ…
Using the high temperature approximation we study, within the linear response theory, the wake in the quark-gluon plasma by a fast parton owing to dynamical screening in the space like region. When the parton moves with a speed less than the average speed of the plasmon, we find that the wake structure corresponds to a screening charge cloud traveling with the parton with one sign flip in the induced charge density resulting in a Lennard-Jones type potential in the outward flow with a short range repulsive and a long range attractive part. On the other hand if the parton moves with a speed hig…
We evaluate the strangeness production from equilibrating and transversely expanding quark gluon plasma which may be created in the wake of relativistic heavy ion collisions. We consider boost invariant longitudinal and cylindrically symmetric transverse expansion of a gluon dominated partonic plasma, which is in local thermal equilibrium. Initial conditions obtained from the self screened parton cascade model are used. We empirically find that the final extent of the partonic equilibration rises almost linearly with the square of the initial energy density. This along with the corresponding v…
The validity of conventional Ohm's law is tested in the context of a rapidly evolving quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions. Here we discuss the electromagnetic response using an analytical solution in kinetic theory. As conjectured previously, after switching on an electric field in a nonexpanding plasma, the time-dependent current is given by $\mathbf{J}(t)=(1-e^{-t/τ_0}) σ_{0} \mathbf{E}$, where $τ_0$ is the transport relaxation time and $σ_{0}$ is the steady-state electrical conductivity. Such an incomplete electromagnetic response reduces the efficiency of the magnetic flux …
The density of states and energy spectrum of the gluon radiation are calculated for the color current of an expanding hydrodynamic skyrmion in the quark gluon plasma with a semiclassical method. Results are compared with those in literatures.
We study contribution of radiative processes to $p_{\perp}$-broadening of fast partons in an expanding quark-gluon plasma. It is shown that the radiative correction to $\langle p_{\perp}^2\rangle$ for the QGP produced in $AA$-collisions at RHIC and LHC may be negative, and comparable in absolute value with the non-radiative contribution. We have found that the QGP expansion enhances the radiative suppression of $p_\perp$-broadening as compared to the static medium.
We derive an expression for the anomalous viscosity in an anisotropically expanding quark-gluon-plasma, which arises from interactions of thermal partons with dynamically generated color fields. The anomalous viscosity dominates over the collisional viscosity for large velocity gradients or weak coupling. This effect may provide an explanation for the apparent ``nearly perfect'' liquidity of the matter produced in nuclear collisions at RHIC without the assumption that it is a strongly coupled state.
We argue that an expanding quark-gluon plasma has an anomalous viscosity, which arises from interactions with dynamically generated color fields. We derive an expression for the anomalous viscosity in the turbulent plasma domain and apply it to the hydrodynamic expansion phase, when the quark-gluon plasma is near equilibrium. The anomalous viscosity dominates over the collisional viscosity for weak coupling and not too late times. This effect may provide an explanation for the apparent ``nearly perfect'' liquidity of the matter produced in nuclear collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Colli…
Particle production from an expanding classical color electromagnetic field is extensively studied, motivated by the early stage dynamics of ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. We develop a formalism at one-loop order to compute the particle spectra by canonically quantizing quark, gluon and ghost fluctuations under the presence of such an expanding classical color background field; the canonical quantization is done in the $τ$-$η$ coordinates in order to take into account manifestly the expanding geometry. As a demonstration, we model the expanding classical color background field by a b…
We investigate the chemical equilibration of the parton distributions in collisions of two heavy nuclei. We use initial conditions obtained from a self-screened parton cascade calculation and, for comparison, from the HIJING model. We consider a one-dimensional, as well as a three-dimensional expansion of the parton plasma and find that the onset of the transverse expansion impedes the chemical equilibration. At energies of 100 GeV/nucleon, the results for one-dimensional and three-dimensional expansion are quite similar except at large values of the transverse radius. At energies of several T…
It is argued that PHENIX collaboration observed for the first time the radiation of the longitudinal wake oscillations formed behind the parton penetrating the quark-gluon medium. It shifts the maximum of a hump in two-particle correlations and changes its width in the case of some special orientation of the trigger particle.
The evolution and production of strangeness from chemically equilibrating and transversely expanding quark gluon plasma which may be formed in the wake of relativistic heavy ion collisions is studied with initial conditions obtained from the Self Screened Parton Cascade (SSPC) model. The extent of partonic equilibration increases almost linearly with the square of the initial energy density, which can then be scaled with number of participants.
We study the mechanism responsible for the onset of instabilities in a chiral phase transition at nonzero temperature and baryon chemical potential. As a low-energy effective model, we consider an expanding relativistic plasma of quarks coupled to a chiral field, and obtain a phenomenological chiral hydrodynamics from a variational principle. Studying the dispersion relation for small fluctuations around equilibrium, we identify the role played by chiral waves and pressure waves in the generation of instabilities. We show that pressure modes become unstable earlier than chiral modes.
We discuss the role of elastic and inelastic collisions and their interplay in the thermalization of the quark-gluon plasma. We consider a simplified situation of a static plasma, spatially uniform and isotropic in momentum space. We focus on the small momentum region, which equilibrates first, and on a short time scale. We obtain a simple kinetic equation that allows for an analytic description of the most important regimes. The present analysis suggests that the formation of a Bose condensate, expected when only elastic collisions are present, is strongly hindered by the inelastic, radiative…
We derive expressions for various correlators of the gauge field and find the propagators in Hamiltonian dynamics which employs a new gauge $A^τ=0$. This gauge is a part of the wedge form of relativistic dynamics suggested earlier as a tool for the study of quantum dynamics in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. We prove that the gauge is completely fixed. The gauge field is quantized and the field of radiation and the longitudinal fields are unambiguously separated. The new gauge puts the quark and gluon fields of the colliding hadrons in one Hilbert space and thus allows one to avoid fa…
We argue that an expanding quark-gluon plasma has an anomalous viscosity, which arises from interactions with dynamically generated colour fields. The anomalous viscosity dominates over the collisional viscosity for large velocity gradients or weak coupling. This effect may provide an explanation for the apparent near perfect liquidity of the matter produced in nuclear collisions at RHIC without the assumption that it is a strongly coupled state.
We calculate the production of large mass dileptons from the jet-dilepton conversion in the expanding quark-gluon plasma at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies. The jet-dilepton conversion exceeds the thermal dilepton production and Drell-Yan process in the large mass region of 3.9 GeV$<M<$5.8 GeV and 6.3 GeV$<M<$8.7 GeV in central Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=2.76 TeV and 5.5 TeV, respectively. We present the numerical solution of ideal fluid hydrodynamics. We find that the transverse flow leads to a rapid cooling of the fire ball. The suppre…
We report on a numerical study of the Boltzmann equation including $2\leftrightarrow 2$ scatterings of gluons and quarks in an overoccupied Glasma undergoing longitudinal expansion. We find that when a cascade of gluon number to the infrared occurs, corresponding to an infrared enhancement analogous to a transient Bose-Einstein condensate, gluon distributions qualitatively reproduce the results of classical-statistical simulations for the expanding Glasma. These include key features of the distributions that are not anticipated in the "bottom-up" thermalization scenario. We also find that quar…
The bulk and shear viscosities ($η$ and $ζ$) have been studied for quark-gluon-plasma produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions within semi-classical transport theory, in a recently proposed quasi-particle model of (2+1)-flavor lattice QCD equation of state. These transport parameters have been found to be highly sensitive to the interactions present in hot QCD. Contributions to the transport coefficients from both the gluonic sector and the matter sector have been investigated. The matter sector is found to be significantly dominating over the gluonic sector, in both the cases of $η$ and …
Previous authors have considered the problem of the medium effects on single gluon bremsstrahlung associated with producing a high-energy particle in a finite, time-dependent QCD plasma. Working to leading logarithmic order, I show that the result for the bremsstrahlung gluon spectrum can be cast into a remarkably simple form in the general case. I similarly analyze the process of pair production. Also, I comment on the radius of convergence of the opacity expansion in cases where the leading-log approximation holds, showing that the opacity expansion does not converge when the thickness of th…
Collective properties of the quark-gluon medium induced by its polarization are described by macroscopic QCD equations. The parton currents traversing it lead to emission of Cherenkov gluons, the wake effect and the transition radiation. Comparison with experimental data of RHIC reveals large value of the chromopermittivity of the medium while cosmic ray data at higher energies (close to LHC) favor much smaller values. The dispersion equations show that the proper modes of the medium are unstable.
We study the propagation of charm quarks, produced from the initial fusion of partons, in an equilibrating quark-gluon plasma which may be formed in the wake of relativistic collisions of gold nuclei. Initial conditions are taken from a self screened parton cascade model and the chemical equilibration is assumed to proceed via gluon multiplication and quark production. The energy loss suffered by the charm quarks is obtained by evaluating the drag force generated by the scattering with quarks and gluons in the medium. We find that the charm quarks may loose only about 10% of their initial ener…
Intense electromagnetic fields are created in the quark-gluon plasma by the external ultra-relativistic valence charges. The time-evolution and the strength of this field are strongly affected by the electrical conductivity of the plasma. Yet, it has recently been observed that the effect of the magnetic field on the plasma flow is small. We compute the effect of plasma flow on magnetic field and demonstrate that it is less than 10\%. These observations indicate that the plasma hydrodynamics and the dynamics of electromagnetic field decouple. Thus, it is a very good approximation, on the one h…
We evaluate the bremsstrahlung production of low mass dileptons and soft photons from equilibrating and transversely expanding quark gluon plasma which may be created in the wake of relativistic heavy ion collisions. We use initial conditions obtained from the self screened parton cascade model. We consider a boost invariant longitudinal and cylindrically symmetric transverse expansion of the parton plasma and find that for low mass dileptons ($M \leq 0.3$ GeV) and soft photons ($p_{T} \leq 0.5$ GeV), the bremsstrahlung contribution is rather large compared to annihilation process at both RHIC…
We estimate the radiative energy-loss of heavy quarks, produced from the initial fusion of partons, while propagating in a quark-gluon plasma which may be formed in the wake of relativistic heavy ion collisions. We find that the radiative energy-loss for heavy quarks is larger than the collisional energy-loss for all energies. We point out the consequences on possible signals of the quark-gluon plasma.
The fast simultaneous hadronization and chemical freeze out of supercooled quark-gluon plasma, created in relativistic heavy ion collisions, leads to the re-heating of the expanding matter and to the change in a collective flow profile. We use the assumption of statistical nature of the hadronization process, and study quantitatively the freeze out in the framework of hydrodynamical Bjorken model with different quark-gluon plasma equations of state.
We perform real-time lattice simulations of nonequilibrium quark production in the longitudinally expanding QCD plasma. Starting from a highly occupied gluonic state with vacuum quark sector, we extract the time evolution of quark and gluon number densities per unit transverse area and rapidity. The total quark number shows after an initial rapid increase an almost linear growth with time. Remarkably, this growth rate appears to be consistent with a simple kinetic theory estimate involving only two-to-two scattering processes in small-angle approximation. This extends previous findings about t…
We propose a new scenario characterizing the transition of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) produced in heavy-ion collisions from a highly non-equilibrium state at early times toward a fluid described by hydrodynamics at late times. We develop an analogy to the evolution of a quantum mechanical system that is governed by the instantaneous ground states. In the simplest case, these slow modes are "pre-hydrodynamic" in the sense that they are initially distinct from, but evolve continuously into, hydrodynamic modes. For a class of collision integrals, the pre-hydrodynamic mode represents the angular…
The growing consensus that a strongly-coupled quark-gluon plasma (sQGP) has been observed at the SPS and RHIC experiments suggests a different framework for examining heavy quark dynamics. We present both semi-analytical treatment of Fokker-Planck (FP) evolution in pedagogical examples and numerical Langevin simulations of evolving charm quark-antiquark pairs on top of a hydrodynamically expanding fireball. In this way, we may conclude that the survival probability of bound charmonia states is greater than previously estimated, as the spatial equilibration of pairs proceeds through a ``slowly …
Direct photon production from a longitudinally expanding quark-gluon plasma (QGP) at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies is studied with a real-time kinetic description that is consistently incorporated with hydrodynamics. Within Bjorken's hydrodynamical model, energy nonconserving (anti)quark bremsstrahlung q(\bar{q})\to q(\bar{q})γand quark-antiquark annihilation q\bar{q}\to γare shown to be the dominant nonequilibrium effects during the transient lifetime of the QGP. For central collisions we find a significant excess of direct photons in the rang…
We use a set of simple angular moments to solve the Boltzmann equation in the relaxation time approximation for a boost invariant longitudinally expanding gluonic plasma. The transition from the free streaming regime at early time to the hydrodynamic regime at late time is well captured by the first two-moments, corresponding to the monopole and quadrupole components of the momentum distribution, or equivalently to the energy density and the difference between the longitudinal and the transverse pressures. We relate this property to the existence of fixed points in the infinite hierarchy of eq…
We discuss how the dynamics of an exploding hot fireball of quark--gluon matter impacts the actual phase transition conditions between the deconfined and confined state of matter. We survey the chemical conditions prevailing at hadronization.
We use linear viscous hydrodynamics to describe the energy and momentum deposited by a fast moving parton in a quark gluon plasma. This energy-momentum is in turn used to compute the probability density for the production of soft partons by means of the Cooper-Frye formula. We use this probability density to render manifest a relation between the average transverse momentum given to the fast moving parton from the medium $\hat{q}$, the entropy density to shear viscosity ratio $η/s$ and the energy lost by the fast moving parton $ΔE$ in an expanding medium under similar conditions to those gener…
Heavy quark drag coefficients in the quark-gluon plasma are evaluated in the perturbative QCD. It is found that for charm quarks the contribution from three-body elastic scattering is comparable to those from two-body elastic and radiative scatterings while for bottom quarks it becomes dominant. Using a schematic expanding fireball model, effects of both two-body and three-body scatterings on the transverse momentum spectra of heavy quarks produced in Au+Au collisions at center of mass energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV are studied. Results on electrons from resulting heavy meson decays are compar…
We have developed a hydrodynamic model to study sequential melting of charmonium states in an expanding QGP medium. According to the initial fluid temperature profile, $J/ψ$'s are randomly distributed in the transverse plane. As the fluid evolve in time, the free streaming $J/ψ$'s are suppressed if the local fluid temperature exceed a critical temperature. PHENIX data on the centrality dependence of $J/ψ$ suppression in Au+Au collisions at mid-rapidity are explained by sequential melting of the charmonium states, $χ_c$, $ψ\prime$ and $J/ψ$, in the expanding medium. The critical temperatures $T…
We show the existence of unstable color skyrmions in a class of nonabelian fluid models. Oscillating and expanding solutions are found in the time-dependent case.
A fluid-dynamic approach to the diffusion of heavy quarks in the quark--gluon plasma (QGP) is presented. Specifically, we analyze the Fokker-Planck equation for the momentum transport of heavy quarks from a fluid perspective and use a mapping to second-order fluid-dynamics to determine conductivities and relaxation times governing their spatial diffusion. By investigating the relation between the two approaches, we provide new insights concerning the level of local thermalization of charm and bottom quarks inside the expanding QGP. Our results indicate that a fluid-dynamic description of diffu…
Evolution of spatially anisotropic perturbation created in the system formed after Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions has been studied. The microscopic evolution of the fluctuations has been examined within the ambit of Boltzmann Transport Equation (BTE) in a hydrodynamically expanding background. The expansion of the background composed of Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) is treated within the framework of relativistic hydrodynamics. Spatial anisotropic fluctuations with different geometry have been evolved through Boltzmann equation. It is observed that the trace of such fluctuation survive the evolu…
Quark and gluon jets traversing through a quark-gluon plasma not only lose their energies but also can undergo flavor conversions. The conversion rates via the elastic $q(\bar q)g\to gq(\bar q)$ and the inelastic $q\bar q\leftrightarrow gg$ scatterings are evaluated in the lowest order in QCD. Including both jet energy loss and conversions in the expanding quark-gluon plasma produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions, we have found a net conversion of quark to gluon jets. This reduces the difference between the nuclear modification factors for quark and gluon jets in central heavy ion colli…
The plasma of quarks and gluons created in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions turns out to be paramagnetic. In the presence of a background magnetic field, this paramagnetism thus leads to a pressure anisotropy, similar to anisotropies appearing in a viscous fluid. In the present paper, we use this analogy, and develop a framework similar to anisotropic hydrodynamics, to take the pressure anisotropy caused, in particular, by the nonvanishing magnetization of a plasma of quarks and gluons into account. We consider the first two moments of the classical Boltzmann equation in the presence of …
We calculate the far-field stress-energy tensor of a quark gluon plasma due to a heavy-quark meson moving through it, using a semi-classical description in string theory of the meson as a string hanging into anti-de Sitter space. We find that these mesons create a shock wave but no diffusion wake, in contrast to single heavy quarks described via a trailing string, where the diffusion wake is strong. If thermal QCD responds similarly to heavy quarks and heavy quarkonia, the presence or suppression of the diffusion wake constitutes a prediction which can in principle be checked in heavy-ion coll…
The stability of an expanding parton plasma is analyzed within quasi-particle models. The effective mass of the parton is calculated self-consistently from a gap equation which is either obtained from the Nambu Jona-Lasinio Lagrangian or from a fit to observables calculated on the lattice. The latter shows an effective confinement. At thermal equilibrium the stability is studied within thermodynamics (mechanical stability) and via a linear response analysis of the Vlasov equation. The instabilities related to a first-order phase transition are found. For a plasma expanding in three and one dim…
In this work we aim to gain qualitative insight on the far-from-equilibrium behavior of the gluon plasma produced in the early stages of a heavy-ion collision. It was recently discovered arXiv:1810.10554 that the distribution functions of quarks and gluons in QCD effective kinetic theory (EKT) exhibit self-similar "scaling" evolution with time-dependent scaling exponents long before those exponents reach their pre-hydrodynamic fixed-point values. In this work we shed light on the origin of this time-dependent scaling phenomenon in the small-angle approximation to the Boltzmann equation. We fir…
We employ a time-dependent Schrödinger equation to study the evolution of a $c\bar c$ dipole in a quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Medium effects on the heavy-quark potential in the QGP are found to significantly affect the timescales of the internal evolution of the dipole. Color-screening can enhance the overlap of the expanding wavepackage with excited states at high temperature, while it is reduced at lower temperatures where the dipole favors the formation of the charmonium ground state. We investigate the consequences of this mechanism on the double ratio of charmonium nuclear modification fact…
We present real-time lattice simulation results for nonequilibrium quark production from an over-occupied gluon plasma in longitudinally expanding geometry. The quark number density per unit transverse area and rapidity shows almost linear growth in time, and its growth rate appears to be consistent with a simple kinetic theory estimate involving only two-to-two scattering processes in small-angle approximation. We also find that quarks produced at early times satisfy a nonequilibrium scaling law.
We investigate the response of non-expanding deconfined hot matter to energy and momentum deposition from a pair of partons moving with high energies. Several situations are examined with partons moving so that the generated wakes in the medium interact. The resulting energy and flow profiles are studied. Such cases are relevant for nuclear collisions at the LHC where several hard partons are produced in a single collision and their contribution to collective expansion of the fireball may be important.
We investigate effects of causal hydrodynamic fluctuations in the longitudinally expanding quark gluon plasma on final entropy distributions in high-energy nuclear collisions.
