We study contribution of radiative processes to $p_{\perp}$-broadening of fast partons in an expanding quark-gluon plasma. It is shown that the radiative correction to $\langle p_{\perp}^2\rangle$ for the QGP produced in $AA$-collisions at RHIC and LHC may be negative, and comparable in absolute value with the non-radiative contribution. We have found that the QGP expansion enhances the radiative suppression of $p_\perp$-broadening as compared to the static medium.
The quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions is anisotropic throughout its evolution. This anisotropy changes the physics of jet-medium interaction, making it dependent on the momentum direction of the jet. In this paper we analyze transverse momentum broadening of a jet parton interacting with soft gluons in an anisotropic plasma. Our analysis equally applies to momentum broadening of quasiparticles in kinetic theory. We subtract contribution from instability modes in the deep infrared and discuss how our calculation should be complemented in that regime. The resulting anisotropic …
We study the radiative correction to $p_\perp$-broadening of a fast quark in a quark-gluon plasma beyond the soft gluon approximation. We find that the radiative contribution to quark $\langle p_\perp^2\rangle$ for RHIC and LHC conditions is negative.
The contribution of radiative processes to $p_\perp$-broadening of fast partons in a quark-gluon plasma is investigated. Calculations are performed beyond the soft gluon approximation. It is shown that the radiative correction to $\langle p_{\perp}^2\rangle$ for conditions of heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC is negative and can be comparable in absolute value with the nonradiative contribution. This prediction differs radically from the essentially positive contribution of radiative processes to $p_{\perp}$-broadening, which was predicted earlier in the literature.
In deeply inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering (DIS), the average jet transverse momentum is broadened because of the multiple scattering in the nuclear medium. The size of jet broadening is proportional to the multi-parton correlation functions inside nuclei. We show that at leading order, jet broadening in DIS and nulcear enhancement in di-jet momentum imbalance and Drell-Yan $< q_T^2 > $ share the same four-parton correlation functions. We argue that jet broadening in DIS provide an indenpendent measurement of the four-parton correlation functions and a test of QCD treatment of multiple scat…
We revisit the transverse momentum broadening of a fast parton pair crossing a nuclear medium, putting emphasis on the pair global color state, for any number of colors $N$ and within the eikonal limit for parton propagation and the Gaussian approximation for the gluon field of the target. This study should provide the necessary tools to address nuclear broadening of $n$-parton systems in phenomenology while highlighting the color structure of the process.
The impact parameter and rapidity dependence of the Cronin effect for massless pions in $d+Au$ reactions at $\sqrt{s}_{NN}=200$ GeV at RHIC is computed in the framework of pQCD multiple elastic scattering on a nuclear target. We introduce a formalism to incorporate initial state energy loss in perturbative calculations and take into account the elastic energy loss in addition to the transverse momentum broadening of partons. We argue that the centrality dependence of the Cronin effect can distinguish between different hadron production scenarios at RHIC. Its magnitude and rapidity dependence ar…
Longitudinal broadening along $Δη$ direction on near side in two-dimensional ($Δϕ\times Δη$) di-hadron correlation distribution has been studied for central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV, within a dynamical multi-phase transport model. It was found that the longitudinal broadening is generated by a longitudinal flow induced by strong parton cascade in central Au+Au collisions, in comparison with p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV. The longitudinal broadening may shed light on the information about strongly interacting partonic matter at RHIC.
The modifications of the angular and transverse momentum distributions of quarks and gluons inside a parton shower due to the presence of a medium are studied within an analytical description that reduces to the modified leading logarithmic approximation (MLLA) of QCD in the absence of medium.
The average transverse momentum transfer per unit path length to a fast parton scattering elastically in a perturbative quark-gluon plasma is related to the radiative energy loss of the parton. We first calculate the momentum transfer coefficient $\hat q$ in terms of a classical Langevin problem and then define it quantum-mechanically through scattering matrix element. After treating the well known case of a quark-gluon plasma in equilibrium we consider an off-equilibrium unstable plasma. As a specific example, we treat the two-stream plasma with unstable modes of longitudinal chromoelectric f…
We present an overview of a perturbative-kinetic approach to jet propagation, energy loss, and momentum broadening in a high temperature quark-gluon plasma. The leading-order kinetic equations describe the interactions between energetic jet-particles and a non-abelian plasma, consisting of on-shell thermal excitations and soft gluonic fields. These interactions include 2<->2 scatterings, collinear bremsstrahlung, and drag and momentum diffusion. We show how the contribution from the soft gluonic fields can be factorized into a set of Wilson line correlators on the light cone. We review recent …
Broadening of the transverse momentum of a parton propagating through a medium is treated using the color dipole formalism, which has the advantage of being a well developed phenomenology in deep-inelastic scattering and soft processes. Within this approach, nuclear broadening should be treated as color filtering, i.e. absorption of large-size dipoles leading to diminishing (enlarged) transverse separation (momentum). We also present a more intuitive derivation based on the classic scattering theory of Molière. This derivation helps to understand the origin of the dipole cross section, part of…
We study the contributions from radiation to $p_{\perp}$-broadening of a high energy parton traversing a QCD medium with a finite length $L$. The interaction between the parton and the medium is described by decorrelated static multiple scattering. Amplitudes of medium-induced gluon emission and parton self-energy diagrams are evaluated in the soft gluon limit in the BDMPS formalism. We find both the double-logarithmic correction from incoherent scattering, which is parametrically the same as that in single scattering, and the logarithmic correction from the LPM effect. Therefore, we expect a …
I give a self-contained review on radiative p_T-broadening and radiative energy loss of high-energy partons in QCD matter. The typical p_T^2 of high-energy partons receives a double logarithmic correction due to the recoiling effect of medium-induced gluon radiation. Such a double logarithmic term, averaged over the path length of the partons, can be taken as the radiative correction to the jet quenching parameter qhat and hence contributes to radiative energy loss. This has also been confirmed by detailed calculations of energy loss by radiating two gluons.
We compare medium induced energy loss and $p_{\perp}$-broadening in perturbative QCD with that of the trailing string picture of SYM theory. We consider finite and infinite extent matter as well as relativistic heavy quarks which correspond to those being produced in the medium or external to it. When expressed in terms of the appropriate saturation momentum, we find identical parametric forms for energy loss in perturbative QCD and SYM theory. We find simple correspondences between $p_{\perp}$-broadening in QCD and in SYM theory although $p_{\perp}$-broadening is radiation dominated in SYM th…
The jet quenching parameter describes the momentum broadening of a high-energy parton moving through the quark-gluon plasma. Following an approach originally proposed by Caron-Huot, we discuss how one can extract information on the collision kernel associated with the parton momentum broadening, from the analysis of certain gauge-invariant operators in dimensionally reduced effective theories, and present numerical results from a lattice study.
We studied the evolution of jets within a medium that contains both, transverse kicks as well as medium induced coherent radiation. In this framework parton branching occurs simultaneously to scatterings within the medium, leading to the interference effects that reproduce the well known BDMPS-Z emission rates and sizeable transverse momentum broadening. We examined the relative importances of transverse momentum broadening from the coherent splittings and different types of in-medium scatterings and found a clear hierarchy of the influences from different scattering effects and deflections du…
The medium-induced $p_{\perp}$-broadening and induced gluon radiation spectrum of a high energy quark or gluon traversing a large nucleus is studied. Multiple scattering of the high energy parton in the nucleus is treated in the Glauber approximation. We show that -dE/dz, the radiative energy loss of the parton per unit length, grows as L, the length of the nuclear matter, as does the characteristic transverse momentum squared of the parton $p_{\perp W}^2$. We find dE/dz = (1/8)α_s N_c $p_{\perp W}^2$ holds independent of the details of the parton-nucleon scatterings so long as L is large. Num…
It has been known for many years that soft radiation can give potentially large double-logarithm corrections to $p_\perp$ broadening of a high-energy particle traveling through QCD matter, but that this soft radiation correction can be absorbed into an effective value $\hat q_{\rm eff}$ for the medium $p_\perp$-broadening parameter $\hat q$. Here "soft" means high energy compared to medium scales but soft compared to the original high-energy particle traveling through the medium. A similar situation arises in the case of soft corrections to hard splitting of a high-energy particle, such as har…
The study of jets in heavy-ion collisions provides important information about the interaction of partons with the medium that they traverse. The seeds of jets are highly energetic partons, which are produced from hard scatterings during the collision event. As such, they are affected by all different stages of the medium's time evolution, including the glasma, which is the pre-equilibrium precursor state of the quark-gluon plasma. Here we report on our numerical lattice simulations of partons traversing the boost-invariant, non-perturbative glasma as created at the early stages of collisions …
We present the nuclear transverse momentum broadening for Drell-Yan lepton pair production in p+A collisions at next-to-leading order (NLO) in powers of strong coupling constant $α_s$. We verify that the transverse momentum weighted differential cross section in NLO perturbative QCD (pQCD) at twist-4 can be factorized into the convolution of parton distribution function of an active parton in the projectile proton, a twist-4 multiparton correlation function of the target nucleus, and perturbatively calculable hard coefficient function. We identify a QCD evolution equation for such a twist-4 nu…
In these proceedings, we report on our numerical lattice simulations of partons traversing the boost-invariant, non-perturbative glasma as created at the early stages of collisions at RHIC and LHC. Since these highly energetic partons are produced from hard scatterings during heavy-ion collisions, they are already affected by the first stage of the medium's time evolution, the glasma, which is the pre-equilibrium precursor state of the quark-gluon plasma. We find that partons quickly accumulate transverse momentum up to the saturation momentum during the glasma stage. Moreover, we observe an i…
We calculate the probability distribution P(k_\perp) for the momentum perpendicular to its original direction of motion that an energetic quark or gluon picks up as it propagates through weakly coupled quark-gluon plasma in thermal equilibrium.
Highly energetic particles in the medium of a quark gluon plasma undergo processes of coherent medium induced radiation and scatterings off medium particles. We solved the evolution equations for particle fragmentation functions that describe in-medium evolution via these two in-medium processes numerically via Monte-Carlo algorithms. We study the in-medium broadening of the distribution over momentum components transverse to the jet-axis for different cases of jet-medium interactions and different values of average transverse momentum transfer.
We extend the Gyulassy-Levai-Vitev reaction operator approach to multiple elastic scattering of fast partons traversing dense nuclear matter to take into account the leading power corrections due to the medium recoil and to derive the change in the partons' longitudinal momentum. We employ a boost-invariant formalism to generalize previous treatments of the problem, which were specific to the target rest frame. We apply the transverse momentum diffusion results in a simple analytic model to evaluate the broadening of the back-to-back di-hadron correlation function in $d+Au$ reactions.
Jets are important probes of heavy ion collisions as they can provide information on the interaction of a highly energetic parton with the medium it traverses. In the hydrodynamic stage of dense, strongly interacting matter, these interactions can be explained in terms of scattering processes, soft gluon emission and collinear parton splittings. However, jets originate even before the hydrodynamic stage. Here we report on the first numerical simulation of transverse momentum broadening of jets stemming from the interaction of partons with boost-invariantly expanding Glasma flux tubes. The Glas…
The JEWEL 1.0 Monte Carlo simulates jet evolution in a medium with a microscopic description of splitting and scattering processes. In the framework of this model we investigate the transverse momentum broadening due to medium effects in different scenarios. Depending on assumptions about hadronisation, we observe either a small increase or even a slight decrease of the mean transverse momentum, but no sizeable broadening. This appears to be a natural consequence of a model formulation which conserves energy and momentum microscopically at each splitting and at each scattering.
We study the process dependent nuclear $k_\perp$ broadening effect by employing the transverse momentum dependent(TMD) factorization approach in combination with the Mclerran-Venugopalan(MV) model. More specifically, we investigate how the parton transverse momentum distributions are affected by the process dependent gauge links in cold nuclear matter. In particular, our analysis also applies to the polarized cases including the nuclear quark Boer-Mulders function and the linearly polarized gluon distribution. Our main focus is on the nuclear TMDs at intermediate or large x.
Using the Drell-Yan process in hadron-nucleus collisions and deeply inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering (DIS) as examples, I show that the transverse momentum broadening can be expressed in terms of four-parton correlation functions. I argue that jet broadening in DIS provide an excellent measurement of the four-parton correlation functions and a test of QCD treatment of the multiple scattering.
We study the connection between radiative energy loss and radiative p_T-broadening of a high-energy quark or gluon passing through QCD matter. The generalized Baier-Dokshitzer-Mueller-Peigne-Schiff-Zakharov (BDMPS-Z) formalism is used to calculate energy loss due to multiple gluon emission. With L the length of the matter and l_0 the size of constituents of the matter we find a double logarithmic correction proportional to ln^2(L/l_0) to parton energy loss due to two-gluon emission. We also show that the radiative energy loss per unit length -dE/dz = alpha_s N_c < p_T^2 >/12 by carrying out a …
We study radiative $p_{\perp}$-broadening of high energy quarks passing through hot and cold QCD matter. With $L$ the length of the matter and $l_{0}$ the size of constituents of the matter we find $\avg{p_{\perp}^{2}}$ has both double logarithmic terms, $\ln^{2}(L/l_{0})$, and single logarithmic terms, $\ln(L/l_{0})$, coming from gluon radiation induced by the matter. We use a (slight) extension of a formalism developed by B. Zakharov for studying energy loss, a formalism which, for much of our calculation, reduces to a simple dipole scattering analysis. We estimate the radiative contribution…
We study pion production in proton-proton collisions within a pQCD-improved parton model in next-to-leading order augmented by intrinsic transverse momentum ($k_\perp$) of the partons. We find the introduction of $k_\perp$ necessary to reproduce the experimental data in the CERN SPS to RHIC energy range. We study the influence of intrinsic $k_\perp$ on the so-called $K$ factor, the ratio of the NLO cross section to the Born term. A strong $p_T$ dependence is seen, especially in the 3-6 GeV transverse momentum region of the outgoing pion, where nuclear effects (e.g. the Cronin effect) play an i…
Quark-gluon plasma produced at the early stage of ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions is unstable, if weakly coupled, due to the anisotropy of its momentum distribution. Chromomagnetic fields are spontaneously generated and can reach magnitudes much exceeding typical values of the fields in equilibrated plasma. We consider a high energy test parton traversing an unstable plasma that is populated with strong fields. We study the momentum broadening parameter $\hat q$ which determines the radiative energy loss of the test parton. We develop a formalism which gives $\hat q$ as the solution of …
We use Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) to analyze the transverse momentum broadening, or diffusion in transverse momentum space, of an energetic parton propagating through quark-gluon plasma. Since we neglect the radiation of gluons from the energetic parton, we can only discuss momentum broadening, not parton energy loss. The interaction responsible for momentum broadening in the absence of radiation is that between the energetic (collinear) parton and the Glauber modes of the gluon fields in the medium. We derive the effective Lagrangian for this interaction, and we show that the prob…
The effects of parton energy loss and pT-broadening in cold nuclear matter on the pT and centrality dependence, at various rapidities, of J/psi suppression in p-A collisions are investigated. Calculations are systematically compared to E866 and PHENIX measurements. The very good agreement between the data and the theoretical expectations further supports pT-broadening and the associated medium-induced parton energy loss as dominant effects in J/psi suppression in high-energy p-A collisions. Predictions for J/psi (and Upsilon) suppression in p-Pb collisions at the LHC are given.
In this paper we discuss the systematics of quarkonium production at the LHC. In particular, we focus on the necessity to sum logs of the form log(Q/p_perp) and log(p_perp/m_Q). We show that the former contributions are power suppressed, while the latter, whose contribution in fragmentation is well known, also arise in the short distance (i.e., non-fragmentation) production mechanisms. Though these contributions are suppressed by powers of m_Q/p_perp, they can be enhanced by inverse powers of v, the relative velocity between heavy quarks in the quarkonium. In the limit p_perp >> m_Q short dist…
We calculate P(k_\perp), the probability distribution for an energetic parton that propagates for a distance L through a medium without radiating to pick up transverse momentum k_\perp, for a medium consisting of weakly coupled quark-gluon plasma. We use full or HTL self-energies in appropriate regimes, resumming each in order to find the leading large-L behavior. The jet quenching parameter \hat q is the second moment of P(k_\perp), and we compare our results to other determinations of this quantity in the literature, although we emphasize the importance of looking at P(k_\perp) in its entire…
We supply recently obtained results from lattice EQCD with the correct UV limit to construct the collisional broadening kernel $C(b_\perp)$ in a QCD plasma. We discuss the limiting behavior of $C(b_\perp)$ at small and large impact parameters $b_\perp$, and illustrate how the results can be used to compute medium-induced radiation rates.
Jet energy loss and single inclusive jet suppression in high-energy heavy-ion collisions are studied within a pQCD parton model that includes both elastic and radiative interactions between jet shower and medium partons as they propagate through the quark-gluon plasma. The collisional energy loss of jets with a given cone-size is found to be relatively small comparing with the radiative energy loss. However the effect of transverse momentum broadening due to elastic scattering is significant in the calculation of radiative energy loss within the higher-twist formalism. The nuclear modification…
We note that the phenomenon of perturbative saturation leads to transverse momentum broadening in the spectrum of partons produced in hadronic collisions. This broadening has a simple interpretation as parton level Cronin effect for systems in which saturation is generated by the "tree level" Glauber-Mueller mechanism. For systems where the broadening results form the nonlinear QCD evolution to high energy, the presence or absence of Cronin effect depends crucially on the quantitative behavior of the gluon distribution functions at transverse momenta kt outside the so called scaling window. We…
We calculate $g_{1T}$ and $h_{1L}^\perp$, two of the eight leading twist transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs), in the light-cone quark-diquark model. The new TMDs can be measured through semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS). We present predictions of the single and double spin asymmetries related to $g_{1T}$ and $h_{1L}^\perp$ in SIDIS at HERMES, COMPASS, and JLab kinematics respectively.
The nuclear $p_\perp$-broadening of Drell-Yan and quarkonium ($J/ψ$, $Υ$) production in $π$A and pA collisions is investigated. The world data follow a simple scaling from SPS to LHC energies, once the process-dependent color factors are properly taken into account, which allows for the extraction of the transport coefficient in cold nuclear matter. We find that $\hat{q}(x)\propto x^{-α}$ with $α=0.25$-$0.30$. The magnitude of the transport coefficient at $x=10^{-2}$ is $\hat{q}_0=0.051$ GeV$^2$/fm and $\hat{q}_0=0.075$ GeV$^2$/fm, whether $Q\bar{Q}$ pairs are assumed to be produced as color o…
We present predictions of the unweighted and weighted double spin asymmetries related to the transversal helicity distribution $g_{1T}$ and the longitudinal transversity distribution $h_{1L}^\perp$, two of eight leading-twist transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) or three-dimensional parton distribution functions (3dPDFs), in the polarized proton-antiproton Drell-Yan process at typical kinematics on the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR). We conclude that FAIR is ideal to access the new 3dPDFs towards a detailed picture of the nucleon structure.
Using deep inelastic scattering on a large nucleus as an example, we consider the transverse momentum broadening of partons in hard processes in the presence of medium. We find that one can factorize the vacuum radiation contribution and medium related $P_T$ broadening effects into the Sudakov factor and medium dependent distributions, respectively. Our derivations can be generalized to other hard processes, such as dijet productions, which can be used as a probe to measure the medium $P_T$ broadening effects in heavy ion collisions when Sudakov effects are not overwhelming.
Processes such as double Drell-Yan and same-sign WW production have contributions from double parton scattering, which are not well-defined because of a delta(z_\perp=0) singularity that is generated by QCD evolution. We study the single and double parton contributions to these processes, and show how to handle the singularity using factorization and operator renormalization. We compute the QCD evolution of double parton distribution functions (PDFs) due to mixing with single PDFs. The modified evolution of dPDFs at z_\perp=0, including generalized dPDFs for the non-forward case, is given in t…
Recently claimed \cite{dj1,dj2,FC} anomalous nuclear effects in di-jet production are analyzed in view of multiple interaction of projectile/ejectile partons in nuclear matter. We derive model--independent relations between A-dependence of the cross section and nuclear broadening of transverse momentum. Comparison with the data show that initial/final state interaction of partons participating in hard process is hard as well. This is a solid argument in favor of smallness of a color neutralization radius of a hadronizing highly virtual quark.
Multiple scattering leads to transverse momentum broadening of the struck quark in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scatterings (SIDIS). Nuclear broadening of the transverse momentum squared at the leading twist is determined by the twist-four collinear quark-gluon correlation function of the target nucleus that is in turn related to the jet transport parameter inside the nuclear medium. The twist-six contributions to the transverse momentum broadening are calculated as power corrections $\sim 1/Q^2$. Such power corrections are found to have no extra nuclear enhancement beyond the twist-four ma…
We review applicability of QCD factorization theorem to multiple scattering in deeply inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering. We show why A^{1/3}-type nuclear enhancement can be calculated consistently in perturbative QCD. We derive the transverse momentum broadening of the leading pions in deeply inelastic lepton-nucleus collisions. We argue that the measurement of such transverse momentum broadening can provide direct information on the multiple-parton correlation functions inside a nucleus. We also estimate the numerical values of the broadening at different values of x_B and Q^2.
We show that the gauge-invariant transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) quark distribution function can be expressed as a sum of all higher-twist collinear parton matrix elements in terms of a transport operator. From such a general expression, we derive the nuclear broadening of the transverse momentum distribution. Under the maximal two-gluon correlation approximation, in which all higher-twist nuclear multiple-parton correlations with the leading nuclear enhancement are given by products of twist-two nucleon parton distributions, we find the nuclear transverse momentum distribution as a convol…
We demonstrate that in the region of Bjorken x ~m_π^2/(4πF_π)^2 and/or x ~|t|/(4πF_π)^2 the standard ChPT for the pion GPDs fails and one must perform all order resummation of ChPT. We perform such resummation in the large-N limit of the O(N+1) extension of the chiral theory. Explicit resummation allows us to reveal novel phenomena -- the form of the leading chiral correction to pion PDFs and GPDs depends on the small-x asymptotic of the pion PDFs. In particular, if the pion PDF in the chiral limit has the Regge-like small x behaviour q(x)~1/x^ω, the leading large impact parameter ($b_\perp\to…
I review the parton picture at strong coupling emerging from the gauge/gravity duality together with its consequences for the energy loss and momentum broadening of a heavy quark moving through a strongly coupled plasma.
The color dipole approach has been applied in the target rest frame to address the issues of transverse momentum broadening and energy loss of a fast quark propagating in the nuclear medium. A recent application of the theory to the FermiLab E772/E866 experimental data, determining the rate of energy loss of a quark propagating in the medium to be 2 to 3 GeV/fm, will be reviewed. Calculations for the transverse momentum distribution will be presented, and the results will be compared to the E866 data. The theory will be shown to compare favorably to the data, and these results will be shown to…
We perform numerical simulations of the QCD Boltzmann-Vlasov equation including both hard elastic particle collisions and soft interactions mediated by classical Yang-Mills fields. We provide an estimate of the coupling of jets to a hot plasma which is independent of infrared cutoffs. For weakly-coupled anisotropic plasmas the local rotational symmetry in momentum space is broken. The fields develop unstable modes, forming configurations where B_t>E_t and E_z>B_z. This provides a possible explanation for the experimental observation that high-energy jets traversing the plasma perpendicular to …
We review the recent finding of the two-plateau momentum distribution of sea quarks in deep inelastic scattering off nuclei in the saturation regime. The diffractive plateau which dominates for small $\bp$ measures precisely the momentum distribution of quarks in the beam photon, the rôle of the nucleus is simply to provide an opacity. The plateau for truly inelastic DIS exhibits a substantial nuclear broadening of the momentum distribution. Despite this nuclear broadening, the observed final state and initial state sea quark densities do coincide exactly. We emphasize how the saturated sea is…
In a recent Letter, Geiger presents calculations of the dilepton emission from the early stage of ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions using the parton cascade model (PCM). He shows that the $M_\perp$ scaling is not observed. In this Comment, we point out that this is largely due to a defect in the PCM.
