Diffusion wake accompanying a Mach cone is a unique feature of the medium response to projectiles traveling at a speed faster than the velocity of sound. This is also the case for jet-medium interaction inside the quark-gluon plasma in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. It leads to a depletion of soft hadrons in the opposite direction of the propagating jet and has been recently observed in $Z$-jet events of Pb+Pb collisions at LHC. In di-jet events, however, the diffusion wake of one jet usually overlaps with the medium-induced hadron enhancement of other jet without a clear signal except a reduction of the hadron enhancement, unless there is a large rapidity gap between the two jets. We propose to use the rapidity asymmetry of jet-hadron correlations in di-jets with a finite rapidity gap relative to that without, as a robust and background-free signal of the diffusion wake. The asymmetry emerges because the diffusion wake of one jet is shifted to a finite rapidity relative to the other jet. Consequently, a depletion of soft hadrons appears in the shifted rapidity region of the diffusion wake and an enhancement in the rapidity region of the other jet whose soft hadron enhancement is no longer or less reduced by the diffusion wake as in di-jets without a rapidity gap. We predict the rapidity asymmetry using both theoretical and mixed-event background subtraction for different values of the rapidity gap within the CoLBT-hydro model. Future measurements of this rapidity asymmetry with high statistics data on di-jets should provide more precise insights into the jet-induced diffusion wake and properties of the quark-gluon plasma.
The diffusion wake accompanying the jet-induced Mach cone provides a unique probe of the properties of quark-gluon plasma in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. It can be characterized by a depletion of soft hadrons in the opposite direction of the propagating jet. We explore the 3D structure of the diffusion wake induced by $γ$-triggered jets in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC energy within the coupled linear Boltzmann transport and hydro model. We identify a valley structure caused by the diffusion wake on top of a ridge from the initial multiple parton interaction (MPI) in jet-hadron correlation …
An excess of events with a rapidity gap between jets, over what would be expected from non-diffractive processes, has been observed at HERA. A process based on a perturbative QCD calculation of colour singlet exchange has been added to HERWIG. With this addition, HERWIG is able to describe the number of events with a gap between jets over the number without a gap. This gap fraction is predicted to rise at large rapidity intervals between jets which would only be visible if the detector coverage were increased.
We solve (3+1)-dimensional ideal hydrodynamical equations with source terms that describe punch-through and fully stopped jets in order to compare their final away-side angular correlations in a static medium. For fully stopped jets, the backreaction of the medium is described by a simple Bethe-Bloch-like model which leads to an explosive burst of energy and momentum (Bragg peak) close to the end of the jet's evolution through the medium. Surprisingly enough, we find that the medium's response and the corresponding away-side angular correlations are largely insensitive to whether the jet punch…
We have searched for high Pt (>40 GeV/c) jet events in ppbar collisions at the Fermilab TEVATRON (S**1/2 = 1800 GeV/c2) which have large pseudo-rapidity differences between the jets and are consistent with zero particle production from the underlying event. Preliminary analysis indicates that a significant fraction of these events with "voids" are present. (3 pages of plain text, 7 Figures available on request from the author)
We study the production of Mueller-Navelet jets at 13 TeV LHC, within collinear factorization and including the BFKL resummation of energy logarithms in the next-to-leading approximation. We calculate several azimuthal correlations for different values of the rapidity separation $Y$ between the two jets and evaluate the effect of excluding those events where, for a given $Y$, one of the two jets is produced in the central region.
We investigate different final state features in Mueller-Navelet jets events at hadron colliders. The focus lies on the average rapidity ratio between subsequent minijet emissions which has been investigated in previous works but now is modified to also incorporate the transverse momenta together with the rapidities of the emitted jets. We study the dependence of this observable on a lower transverse momentum veto which does affect the typical minijet multiplicity of the events under scrutiny. We find that this observable is stable when including higher order quantum corrections, also when col…
We discuss the rapidity distribution of produced jets in heavy-ion collisions at LHC. The process allows one to determine to a good accuracy the value of the impact parameter of the nuclear collision in each single inelastic event. The knowledge of the geometry is a powerful tool for a detailed analysis of the process, making it possible to test the various different elements which, in accordance with present theoretical ideas, take part to the production mechanism.
We present an estimation of the contribution of double parton scattering (DPS) for jets widely separated in rapidity and for four-jet sample. In the case of four-jet production we calculate cross section for both single-parton scattering (SPS) using the code ALPGEN as well as for DPS in LO collinear approach. The DPS contribution is calculated within the so-called factorized Ansatz and each step of DPS is calculated in the LO collinear approximation. We show that the relative (with respect to SPS dijets and to the BFKL Mueller-Navelet (MN) jets) contribution of DPS is growing at large rapidity…
We study the decorrelation in azimuthal angle of Mueller-Navelet jets at hadron colliders within the BFKL formalism. We introduce NLO terms in the evolution kernel and present a collinearly-improved version of it for all conformal spins. We show how this further resummation has good convergence properties and is closer to the Tevatron data than a simple LO treatment. However, we are still far from a good fit. We offer estimates of these decorrelations for larger rapidity differences which should favor the onset of BFKL effects and encourage experimental studies of this observable at the LHC.
Hadronic jets are extremely abundant at the LHC, and testing QCD in various corners of phase-space is important to understand backgrounds and some specific signatures of new physics. In this article, various measurements aiming at probing QCD in configurations where the theory modeling become challenging are presented. Azimuthal angle de-correlations are sensitive to hard as well as soft QCD emission, and in most of the events jets are produced in a back-to-back configuration. Events where jets have a large rapidity separation are also rare, and those without additional radiation between the j…
We derive the probability for rapidity gaps in a parton cascade and investigate the dual connection with hadronic final states. A good description of observations in e+e- annihilations is obtained by perturbative QCD calculations in MLLA using previously determined parameters (QCD scale Λand k_T-cut-off Q_0) and applying the parton hadron duality picture. Further predictions are derived; especially, for gaps between jets at variable resolution we predict a strong variation of gap probabilities for small parameters y_{cut} -> 0 in the transition from jets to hadrons. Large gaps between partons …
We propose a new framework, merging High Energy Factorization with final-state jet quenching effects due to interactions in a quark-gluon plasma, to compute di-jet rates at mid- and forward rapidity. It allows to consistently study the interplay of initial-state effects with medium interactions, opening the possibility for understanding the dynamics of hard probes in heavy-ion collisions and the QGP evolution in rapidity.
We study the probability for no jets with transverse momenta above a given cut to be found in the rapidity region between two high pT jets with a large rapidity separation. Our investigation uses the parton shower event generator DEDUCTOR with color beyond the leading-color-plus approximation included perturbatively.
We discuss production of four jets $pp \rightarrow j j j j X$ with at least two jets with large rapidity separation in proton-proton collisions at the LHC through the mechanism of double-parton scattering (DPS). The cross section is calculated in a factorizaed approximation. Each hard subprocess is calculated in LO collinear approximation. The LO pQCD calculations are shown to give a reasonably good descritption of CMS and ATLAS data on inclusive jet production. It is shown that relative contribution of DPS is growing with increasing rapidity distance between the most remote jets, center-of-ma…
We propose a model to describe diffractive events in hadron-hadron collisions where a rapidity gap is surrounded by two jets. The hard color-singlet object exchanged in the t-channel and responsible for the rapidity gap is described by the pQCD Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov Pomeron, including corrections due to next-to-leading logarithms. We allow the rapidity gap to be smaller than the inter-jet rapidity interval, and the corresponding soft radiation is modeled using the HERWIG Monte Carlo. Our model is able to reproduce all Tevatron data, and allows to estimate the jet-gap-jet cross section …

Diffusion wake is an unambiguous part of the jet-induced medium response in high-energy heavy-ion collisions that leads to a depletion of soft hadrons in the opposite direction of the jet propagation. New experimental data on $Z$-hadron correlation in Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider show, however, an enhancement of soft hadrons in the direction of both the $Z$ and the jet. Using a coupled linear Boltzmann transport and hydro model, we demonstrate that medium modification of partons from the initial multiple parton interaction (MPI) gives rise to a soft hadron enhancement that is …
In this talk we review the models describing the hard diffractive production of jets or more generally high-mass states in presence of rapidity gaps in hadron-hadron and lepton-hadron collisions. By rapidity gaps we mean regions on the lego plot in (pseudo)-rapidity and azimuthal angle where no hadrons are produced, between the jet(s) and an elastically scattered hadron (single hard diffraction) or between two jets (double hard diffraction).
We explore how to improve the hybrid model description of the particles originating from the wake that a jet produced in a heavy ion collision leaves in the droplet of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) through which it propagates, using linearized hydrodynamics on a background Bjorken flow. Jet energy and momentum loss described by the hybrid model become currents sourcing linearized hydrodynamics. By solving the linearized hydrodynamic equations numerically, we investigate the development of the wake in the dynamically evolving droplet of QGP, study the effect of viscosity, scrutinize energy-momentum …
The suppression of high transverse momentum (P_T) jets and hadrons in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions with respect to a p-p baseline in terms of the nuclear suppression factor R_AA is one of the key observables to gauge the density of a hot and dense QCD medium. However, the suppression measured by R_AA is not a straightforward measure of the medium properties, the value of the observable also depends on the ratio of quark to gluon jets and on the slope of the hard parton spectrum, which explains why R_AA is found to be fairly similar at RHIC and LHC despite the very different dynamics.…
We study ratios of azimuthal-angle distributions in Mueller-Navelet jets after imposing a rapidity veto constraint: the minijet radiation activity is restricted to only allow final-state partons separated at least a distance in rapidity $b$. It is well-known that the asymptotic growth with the rapidity separation of the two tagged jets of the NLLA BFKL Green's function requires a value of $b \simeq {\cal O} (2)$ in order to avoid unphysical cross sections. We further investigate this point from a phenomenological point of view and work out those values of $b$ which best fit angular distributio…
A study of the production of Mueller-Navelet jets at 13 TeV LHC is presented, including BFKL resummation effects and investigating three different variants of the BLM scale optimization method. It is shown how the cross section and the azimuthal observables are affected by the exclusion of the events where, for a given rapidity interval between the two jets, one of these is produced in the central region.
The theory of the perturbative pomeron, due to Lipatov and collaborators, is used to compute the probability of observing parton-parton elastic scattering and rapidity gaps between jets in hadron collisions at very high energies.
We discuss hadroproduction of 4-jet final state at the LHC within the double-parton scattering (DPS) mechanism in the context of large-rapidity-distance jets. For planned and/or being currently performed high energy experiments this is the kinematical region where searches for BFKL signal are of the main interest. The DPS contributions are calculated in the LO collinear approach within the so-called factorized Ansatz. We show that the relative contribution of DPS is growing with respect to standard single-parton scattering (SPS) production of dijets and to the BFKL Mueller-Navelet (MN) jet mec…
The azimuthal angular decorrelation that is relevant to small-x QCD physics is studied in this paper to show the BFKL effect with a recent event generator. Events are generated at \sqrt{s} = 100 TeV with proton-proton collisions and jets, that are reconstructed by the Anti-k_{T} algorithm (R=0.7), with p_{T}>35GeV and in the rapidity range of |y|<6 are selected for the study. The azimuthal-angle difference between Mueller-Navelet Jets (Δ\text{Φ} ) in the rapidity seperation (Δy) up to 12 is analysed. The distributions of <cosn(π-ΔΦ)> for n=1,2,3 and their ratio are also presented as a function…
We investigate diffractive events in hadron-hadron collisions, in which two jets are produced and separated by a large rapidity gap. In perturbative QCD, the hard color-singlet object exchanged in the t-channel, and responsible for the rapidity gap, is the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) Pomeron. We perform a phenomenological study including the corrections due to next-to-leading logarithms (NLL). Using a renormalisation-group improved NLL kernel, we show that the BFKL predictions are in good agreement with the Tevatron data, and present predictions which could be tested at the LHC.
We consider the single-inclusive minijet cross section in pA at forward rapidity within the Color Glass Condensate model of high energy collisions. We show that the nucleus appears black to the incident quarks except for very large impact parameters. A markedly flatter p_t distribution as compared to QCD in the dilute perturbative limit is predicted for transverse momenta about the saturation scale, which could be as large as Q_s^2 ~ 10 GeV^2 for a gold nucleus boosted to rapidity ~10 (as at the BNL-RHIC).
We discuss production of four-jet final state $pp \rightarrow j j j j X$ in proton-proton collisions at the LHC through the mechanism of double-parton scattering (DPS) in the context of jets with large rapidity separation. The DPS contributions are calculated within the so-called factorized Ansatz and each step of DPS is calculated in the LO collinear approximation. The LO pQCD calculations are shown to give a reasonably good descritption of recent CMS and ATLAS data on inclusive jet production and therefore this formalism can be used to reliably estimate the DPS effects. Relative contribution…
Multi-jet production at the LHC is an important process to study. In particular, events with final state kinematic configurations where we have two jets widely separated in rapidity with similar pT and lots of mini-jets or jets populating the space in between are relevant for the high energy limit of QCD. Keeping the jet multiplicity fixed, the study of these events is a good ground to test different models of multi-particle production in hadron-hadron collisions. We report on a comparison between the predictions of the old multiperipheral Chew-Pignotti model and those of BFKL for the single j…
We calculate the cross section for production of a soft photon and two hard jets in the forward rapidity region in proton-nucleus collisions at high energies. The calculation is performed within the hybrid formalism. The hardness of the final particles is defined with respect to the saturation scale of the nucleus. We consider both the correlation limit of small momentum imbalance and the dilute target limit where the momentum imbalance is of the order of the hardness of the jets. The results depend on the first two transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) gluon distributions of the nucleus.
We study the impact of selection biases on jet structure and substructure observables and separate these effects from effects caused by jet quenching. We use the angular separation $ΔR$ of the hardest splitting in a jet as the primary example observable. We first conduct a simplified Monte Carlo study in which it is possible to identify the same jet after quenching in a heavy ion collision and as it would have been if it had formed in vacuum. We select a sample of jets by placing a cut on their quenched $p_T$ and, as is possible only in a Monte Carlo study, compare to the same jets unquenched,…
We show that the hadroproduction of a pair of jets with large transverse energy in the central region bounded by rapidity gaps is an ideal process to see important double logarithmic QCD suppression effects. We compute the cross sections for both exclusive and inclusive double-diffractive dijet production at Tevatron and LHC energies for a range of rapidity configurations.
We study nuclear modification of the photon-tagged jets in $AA$ collisions within the jet quenching scheme based on the light-cone path integral approach to the induced gluon emission. The calculations are performed for running coupling. Collisional energy loss is treated as a perturbation to the radiative mechanism. We obtain a reasonable agreement with the recent data from the STAR Collaboration on the mid-rapidity nuclear modification factor $I_{AA}$ for Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV for parametrization of running $α_s$ consistent with that necessary for description of the data on …
We observe that at the Large Hadron Collider, using forward + central detectors, it becomes possible for the first time to carry out calorimetric measurements of the transverse energy flow due to "minijets" accompanying production of two jets separated by a large rapidity interval. We present parton-shower calculations of energy flow observables in a high-energy factorized Monte Carlo framework, designed to take into account QCD logarithmic corrections both in the large rapidity interval and in the hard transverse momentum. Considering events with a forward and a central jet, we examine the en…
The exchange of electroweak gauginos in the $t-$ or $u-$channel allows squark pair production at hadron colliders without color exchange between the squarks. This can give rise to events where little or no energy is deposited in the detector between the squark decay products. We discuss the potential for detection of such rapidity gap events at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We present an analysis with full event simulation using PYTHIA as well as Herwig++, but without detector simulation. We analyze the transverse energy deposited between the jets from squark decay, as well as the probabili…
We show that soft color rearrangement of final states can account for the appearance of rapidity gaps between jets. In the color evaporation model the probability to form a gap is simply determined by the color multiplicity of the final state. This model has no free parameters and reproduces all data obtained by the ZEUS, H1, D0, and CDF collaborations.
The perturbative QCD description of high-energy hadroproduction of two hard jets separated by a large rapidity gap void of emission (also called Mueller-Tang jets) is based on a factorization formula of BFKL type that represents exchanges of colour-singlet objects among the external particles. This formula resums to all perturbative orders a certain class of Feynman diagrams that are supposed to dominate the cross-section in the Regge limit. However, the explicit calculations at next-to-leading logarithmic order questions the validity of such factorization when an IR safe jet algorithm is used…
We calculate the probability of large rapidity gaps in high energy hadronic collisions using a model based on QCD mini-jets and soft gluon emission down into the infrared region. Comparing with other models we find a remarkable agreement among most predictions.
We show that Mach-like azimuthal correlations of associated hadrons in the wake of heavy quark jets modeled in the AdS/CFT string drag picture originate only from the near-quark ``Head'' region. The contributions from the far zones lead only to a yield peaked in the opposite direction with respect to the trigger jet.
We discuss how to search for a possibe signal of the recently observed 750 GeV enhancement in the diphoton channel in the four-jet production. In the present studies we assume that the produced state is pseudoscalar. This fact, when combined with specificity of the corresponding amplitude, allows to improve the signal-to-background (S/B) ratio. We discuss in detail how to impose cuts on jets in rapidity and transverse momenta in order to find optimal S/B ratio and not to loose too much statistics. Our study suggest a measurement of two soft (low cut on $p_t$) large-rapidity jets and two hard (…
We study the transverse momenta and (pseudo)rapidity spectrum of the top quark and their decay products, the tt-system, and the total number of jets in proton-proton (pp) collisions at 13 TeV by using the Tsallis-Pareto-type function and the three-source Landau hydrodynamic model, respectively. The related parameters, such as the effective temperature of the interacting system (T), the non-extensivity of the process (n) and the width ($σ$) of (pseudo)rapidity distribution are extracted.
In this talk we give a short review of forward jets and forward $W$-boson production at hadron colliders, in view of the extraction of footprints of BFKL physics. We argue that at Tevatron energies, dijet production at large rapidity intervals is still subasymptotic with respect to the BFKL regime, thus the cross section is strongly dependent on the various cuts applied in the experimental setup. In addition, the choice of equal transverse momentum cuts on the tagging jets makes the cross section dependent on large logarithms of non-BFKL origin, and thus may spoil the BFKL analysis. For vector…
We evaluate differential cross sections for production of four jets in multi-Regge kinematics at a hadron collider. The main focus lies on azimuthal angle dependences. As in previous studies, the ratios of correlation functions of products of cosines of azimuthal angle differences among the tagged jets offer us the cleanest quantities to compare with experimental data. The calculations are based on the jet production from a single BFKL ladder with a convolution of three BFKL Green functions where we always have two forward/backward jets tagged in the final state. We also demand the tagging of …
We analyze various perturbative mechanisms for the production of jet events containing rapidity gaps in $e^+e^-$ annihilation at LEP200 energies. We found that the processes $e^+e^- \to γ^* γ^*, γ^* Z, Z Z, WW \to 4~ jets$ generate gap events at an observable rate. We point out that LEP200 offers a unique opportunity for the study of gap events due to a smaller background of ``fake-gaps".
The inclusive production of several jets is studied in the framework of the hard pomeron model. The average jet momenta are found to be strongly ordered and growing towards the central c.m. rapidity, as expected. Strong positive correlations are found for pairs of jets neighbouring in rapidity, both in the forward-backward and forward-forward directions.
Our numerical analysis is divided into two parts. First, we evaluate in a simplified framework the rapidity gap signal at the parton level. The second part covers an analysis with full event simulation using PYTHIA as we…
We discuss the azimuthal angle decorrelation of Mueller-Navelet jets at hadron colliders and forward jets in Deep Inelastic Scattering within the BFKL framework with a NLO kernel. We stress the need of collinear improvements to obtain good perturbative convergence. We provide estimates of these decorrelations for large rapidity differences at the Tevatron, LHC and HERA.
Jet modification in heavy-ion collisions is an important probe of the nature and structure of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) produced in these collisions and also encodes information about how the wakes that jets excite in a droplet of QGP form and relax. However, in experiment, one cannot know what a particular jet in a heavy ion collision would have looked like without quenching, making it difficult to interpret measurements in terms of individual jet modification. The goal of this Monte Carlo study is to gain insight into the modification of jet observables using the hybrid strong/weak coupli…
We study the correlation in azimuthal angle between Mueller-Navelet jets produced in hadron-hadron collisions. We argue that this observable would test the BFKL approach at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. In order to motivate such a measurement, we give predictions for jets separated by large rapidity intervals within the Tevatron and LHC ranges.
Using the Landshoff-Nachtmann two-gluon exchange model of the pomeron, the double pomeron exchange contribution to production of gluon pairs in the central region of rapidity is calculated. The results are compared with those for production of quark-antiquark pairs.
We explore the perturbative QCD dynamics of hard parton-parton scattering through the exchange of a color singlet two-gluon ladder as described by the BFKL equation, resulting in a rapidity gap between two high transverse momentum jets. Implementing this in a complete Monte Carlo event simulation that also accounts for additional QCD processes at softer scales provides dynamical modeling of gap survival probabilities, which makes possible a detailed comparison with data on such jet-gap-jet events. New data from CMS at the LHC extend the dynamic range of the previous Tevatron data, and can be r…
